Benny Morton & Jimmy Hamilton — Benny Morton & Jimmy Hamilton Blue Note Swingtets ... LP
Mosaic/Blue Note, 1940s. Near Mint- Gatefold .... $43.99
Early, early Blue Note sides, from the dawn of the label, a transitional period in jazz. These sessions, led by Benny Morton and Jimmy Hamilton are truly hard-to-get in their original format, not to mention in any pressing, and these recordings reflect a side of the Blue Note catalog that's rarely considered any more. These swingtet sides feature the cream of the crop of the big band era, performing in smaller tighter groups that let them move around New York's urban jazz scene more easily. Some of the finest soloists of the era are caught here in a unique setting, including Barney Bigard, Ben Webster, Ray Nance and Harry Carney. As you'd expect from the performance standards of the day, the performance are short, tight and sweet, and include "MY Old Flame, "Conversing In Blue", two takes of "The Sheik Of Araby" and "Limehouse Blues" by Benny Morton's All Stars, "Cherry", "Rosetta", "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" and "Wiliphant Winnie" by the Sammy Benskin Trio and "Old Uncle Bud", "Blues For Clarinets", "Slapstick" and "Blues In My Music Room" by Jimmy Hamilton & The Duke's Men.

Tito Puente — Quatro – The Definitive Collection (Cuban Carnival/Night Beat/Dance Mania/Revolving Bandstand/Bonus Edition) (5LP set) (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
RCA/Sony, Late 50s. New Copy 5 LPs .... $79.99 109.98
A smoking set of work from Tito Puente – four classic albums, wrapped together in a single package – with a bonus album of rare material too! First up is Cuban Carnival – one of Tito Puente's finest albums for RCA, with a tight hard bunch of cuts that have a Cuban big band sound, and a lot more drive to them than some of Tito's other work for the label. Ray Bryant wrote the great track "Cuban Fantasy", and Tito contributed most of the other tunes on the set – a really unique batch of material that includes "Yambeque", "Elegua Chango", "Que Sera", and "Cha Cha De Pollos". The percussion is nice and hard, and the band grooves in tight ensemble playing throughout! Night Beat is a really jazzy effort that was cut with a top-shelf list of players! The groove's a bit different than some of Tito's other work – but in a good way, and one that has him stretching past straight Latin to mix in a heavy dose of jazz – really getting the most of players who include Eddie Bert on trombone, Gene Quill on saxes, Bernie Glow on trumpet, and Barry Galbraith on guitar. The rhythms are key – and in addition to drums from Jimmy Cobb, the album also features Mongo Santamaria on congas and Willy Correa on bongos – not to mention more percussion from Tito himself! Dance Mania is a burner of a set from Tito Puente – very well titled to suit the energy of the session! The tracks are all highly rhythmic numbers – short, but filled with jazzy horn flourishes and the kind of snapping rhythms that made the Puente group one of the biggest crossover favorites of the 50s. Tunes nicely mix up vocals with some more pronounced jazz soloing – getting a heck of a lot into a relatively small space, and really keeping up the energy of the record overall. Revolving Bandstand is a joint project from Tito Puente and Buddy Morrow – both leaders who recorded some great work for the label in the 50s, sounding great here in a unique variation on their classic sounds! The album has both Morrow and Puente playing back to back – creating a "revolving bandstand" that has both groups playing the same tunes at the same time – a very odd approach, but one that comes off well here – mixing Tito's Latin and Buddy's swing nicely, without too much confusion in the instrumentation. There's some great vibes on a few tracks! Last up is Tito Puente Quatro Bonus Edition – a set that features 13 rare tracks, with singles, outtakes, and more – including "La Virgen De La Macarena", "Moonlight In Vermont", "The Continental (alt take)", "Blue Moon (alt)", "Ran Kan Kan", "Timbal Y Bongo", and many outtakes of "Pa Los Rumberos"! All LPs on 180 gram vinyl – with liner notes too!

new Kool & The Gang — Who's Gonna Take The Weight (parts 1 & 2) ... 7-inch
De-Lite, Early 70s. Very Good+ .... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
One of the group's first really monster cuts! The track shows the band moving past a straight funk mode, hitting a more message-oriented approach that bears some resemblance to some of the more righteous funk/jazz ensembles at the time. The cut starts out with a spare, spiritual intro – then launches into some kicked-up, full-on funk that's pure Kool & The Gang! A great number with a monster hook – and a riff that's been sampled and covered for years!
(Label has some pen.)

new James Brown — Gettin' Down To It ... LP
King, 1969. Used Gatefold .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little album by James Brown – and very different than his other work! He cut this one with the groovy Dee Felice Trio – a jazz-based combo that he recorded on their own for King, on another very rare, very excellent record. The band's in similar form here, although not necessarily as funky – and they do a great job of giving James' vocals a jazzy twist that they don't have on other albums – proving yet again that The Godfather can handle just about any sort of groove that he wants! Features a wonderfully groover version of "Sunny", which moves along very nicely – plus remakes of "There Was A Time" and "Cold Sweat", along with the tracks "Uncle" and "That's Life".
(Blue label pressing. Cover has light wear and a partially unglued seam.)
Also available: Gettin' Down To It ... LP $9.99

new Sheree Brown — Straight Ahead ... LP
Capitol, 1981. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album of breezy jazzy soul from the sweet voiced Sheree Brown! The record is one of two that Brown cut for Capitol, and it was produced by Richard Rudolph – husband and collaborator of the late Minnie Riperton – in the immediate years after Minnie's death, leading us to wonder if Rudolph was trying for another hit with a different female vocalist. This LP's got a bit of a Minnie Riperton-ish feel, but Sheree also brings a lot more to the session – including some nice guitar work, and a sophisticated soul style that's kind of in a Jean Carn mode. Features the wonderful jazzy stepper "It's A Pleasure", which has a compressed jazz funk groove, and bouncy vocals over the top. Other trakcs include "I Wanna Be By Your Side", "Happiness Flows", and "Everything You Do". Very nice stuff, and a lot harder to find than it should be!
(Cover has a cutout hole.)

new Jean Carne — Collaborations ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Smooth modern duets from one of our favorite ladies in soul music! Jean Carne's a heck of a singer – with a career that stretches back to early soul jazz recordings with (then) husband Doug Carn, to solo recordings on Philly International in the late 70s, to appearances on records by other artists – sessions from the 70s, 80s, and 90s in which Jean lent her vocals to a wealth of great recordings! This great collection focuses on work in that category – uncollected sides from a three decade period, brought together in one album that shows just how great Jean can sound when she's singing with other artists. Many of these titles are quite hard to find otherwise, and haven't even shown up on other collections of Jean's work – and tracks include "Good Thng Goin On" with Billy Paul, "Holdin On" and "Dreams Of Tomorrow" with Dexter Wansel, "Keep In Touch" and "The Look Of Love" with Grover Washington Jr, "Lean On Me" with Nathan Heathman, "If You Don't Know Me By Now" with The Temptations, "Love Is Beautiful" with Universe, "Star Flower" with Lonnie Liston Smith, "Let's Stay Together" with Bobby M, "I'm Back For More" with Al Johnson, "You Might Be Surprised" with Roy Ayers, "Mother Of The Future" with Norman Connors, and "Valentine Love" with Michael Henderson. Also features the bonus solo track "Trust Me" – never on CD before!

new Dayton — Dayton/Cutie Pie ... CD
Liberty/Expansion (UK), 1980/1981. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of killers from Dayton – two albums back to back on a single CD! First up is Dayton – the first album by this excellent 80s groove ensemble – and a key part of the Ohio funk scene of the end of the 70s! Forget the more famous funk acts you may know from Ohio, because Dayton's Dayton (can we say that?) were one of the sweetest, smoothest, tightest funk acts to come out of the entire midwest at the time – and the group had a hard-riffing, catchy-hooking sound that should have made them legends instantly. This album's got a great sound that mixes harmony vocals with modern soul use of bass and keyboards – blending the two aspects perfectly, without any of the painfully overwrought vamping and popping that could ruin other funk bands at the time – and from the very first note of the set, you can tell that Dayton's a class act, ready to go all the way! Titles include "Living For Today", "Dank", "Eyes On You", "Let Go", "So Glad", and "Tonight". Cutie Pie is one of the greatest albums ever from Dayton – the kind of bouncy, funky combo who really put Ohio soul on the map at the start of the 80s! The group's got a wonderfully tight ensemble style that mixes both male and female vocals with bumping bass and sweet jazzy keyboards – all very much in a mode that's similar to some of their Capitol label contemporaries – like BB&Q Band or Mystic Merlin – with perhaps just an undercurrent of the Roger/Zapp sound too. Titles include the groover "Cutie Pie", plus the tracks "Let Me Know", "Wanna Be Your Man", "You Lift Me Up", and "Fool Was He".

new 52nd Street — Children Of The Night ... LP
MCA, 1985. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Catchy soul from the mid 80s scene – one of the more mainstream efforts from a group who could also be a bit jazzy at times! The album's still got a quality that's better than most of the chart work of the period – a bit more of that British bounce at the bottom, even though the overall sound and production are quite professional. Titles include "Children Of The Night", "Abandon Love", "You're My Last Chance", "Smiling Eyes", "I'm Available", and "Let's Celebrate".

new Slide Hampton — Sister Salvation ... LP
Atlantic, 1960. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Slide Hampton's first albums – and a massively hard-wailing set that will make any doubters sit up and take notice! The set really packs a punch – as Slide leads a hip group that features Freddie Hubbard, Richard Williams, Bernard McKinney, and George Coleman through some tightly woven arrangements that manage to swing with the grace of small combo work, yet wail with the intensity of a big band. Great solos pop out all over the set – and there's a soul jazz groove that makes the album sound like a classic Prestige session. Titles include "Asseveration", "Hi Fly", "Sister Salvation", and "A Little Night Music".
(Red & purple label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a bit of sticker residue on the front and a some pencil on the back.)

new Southern University Jazz Ensemble/Alvin Batiste — Live At The 1971 American College Jazz Festival ... LP
Jazzstronauts/Family Groove, 1971. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A set that's gotta be one of the most righteous school band records ever – way more than just a bunch of students doing big band numbers, and instead a killer batch of spiritual jazz numbers, directed by the legendary Alvin Batiste! The record's one of a rare few 70s sets of this nature – one that shows a group of younger musicians really reaching out for bold new sounds – every bit as complex and soulful as work on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz, with a firey power that signals a new generation of the jazz underground! And while Batiste is at the head of the group, there's plenty of other great younger players too – including Henry Butler on piano, Henry Scott on flute, Kirk Ford on tenor, Reginald Houston on baritone, Raymond Deggs on trumpet, Julius Farmer on bass, and Herman Jackson on drums! Side one features burning ensemble numbers that include "Music Came", "Tunjii", "Straight Life", and "North American Idiosyncrasy" – and side two features early material by the Henry Butler Trio, on titles that include "So What", "In My Solitude", and "Milestones".
(Limtied to 500 copies.)
