✨✧ Johnny GriffinJohnny Griffin Sextet ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used ... $11.99
Few people could make a session cook like Johnny Griffin in his early years – and this late 50s sextet date is great proof of that fact! The album's a relaxed, open, almost unstructured set that might be dubbed a "blowing session", were it not for the tightness of the players and the relatively unified feel of the date. Griffin's tenor is very firmly in the lead, and he's very clearly the leader here – helping shape the sound of the group that includes Donald Byrd on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Kenny Drew on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's some really hard-wailing extended numbers that come across as full-on hardbop workouts – really driving things along as you might guess with a rhythm section like that in action – but other tunes show some more fully-fleshed sounds from the group – that slight undercurrent of modern expression that was always present in Griff's music. Titles include "Johnny GG", "Catharsis", "Stix Trix", and "What's New" – plus a take on "Woody N You" that just has Griffin wailing along with the rhythm section! CD

DoorsLive At The Matrix 1967 – The Original Masters (3CD set) ... CD
Elektra, 1967. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Really important early live work from The Doors – a performance at the legendary Matrix club in San Francisco – and one of the first concert recordings ever done of the group! The set wasn't originally part of their legacy with Elektra Records, but has become rehoused as a key part of their catalog at the label – a really burning performance that effortlessly mixes blues inspirations, psych inclinations, and that very special quality that the band was forging right from the start! As with other unearthed Matrix recordings – which seem to show up more and more as the years go on – the whole thing is a key window into not just a moment in the group, but a moment in the scene as well – even though, reportedly, the concerts were very under-attended at the time. This triple-length package brings together the entire five nights of recording, with lots of unissued material – including surprising versions of jazz tunes "Bag's Groove" and "All Blues" – plus never-heard versions of "Summer's Almost Gone", "When The Music's Over", "My Eyes Have Seen You", "Alabama Song", "Break On Through", and "Moonlight Drive". ✨✧ Harvey MandelSnake Box (Cristo Redentor/Righteous/Games Guitars Play/Baby Batter/The Snake/Live At The Matrix) (6CD set) ... CD
Philips/Purple Pyramid, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 6CDs ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful run of music from the mighty Harvey Mandel – a musician whose biggest fame was his bluesy work with Canned Heat, but a guitarist who also had plenty of jazz and funk to offer as well! The set brings together Mandel's killer solo albums – Cristo Redentor, Righteous, Games Guitars Play, Baby Batter, and The Snake – each of them a wonderful blend of psychedelic styles, jazzy currents, and some nice funk touches – music that's as unique now as it was when it was recorded – which sometimes meant that Harvey's genius was lost between the cracks, because the stores and radios never knew where to put him! The set also features a rare live performance – Live At The Matrix – with tracks that are even longer and grittier than some of Mandel's studio work of the time! CD

Kai Winding & JJ JohnsonBrand New Swinging Together Again – The Great Kai & JJ ... CD
Impulse, Early 60s. Used ... $1.99
The famous 50s team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding are reunited strongly here – after working alone for several years on their own projects! The groove here is a bit more open and less arranged than some of the pair's earlier projects – mostly just two trombones in the lead, soloing separately, with backing from a rhythm trio – split into two for each half of the album, with Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes handling side one; and Evans, Tommy Williams, and Art Taylor on side two. Tunes are short, but include deft demonstrations of the solo talents of each player – and titles include "Judy", "Alone Together", "Going, Going, Gong", "Trixie", "This Could Be The Start Of Something", "Georgia On My Mind", "I Concentrate On You", and "Just For A Thrill". ✨✧ Chick CoreaNow He Sings – Now He Sobs (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solid State (Japan), 1968. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Amazing modern work from the young Chick Corea – a set that captures the pianist in much more avant territory than his famous 70s sets – at a time when he was just coming off some years working in a variety of modes on the New York scene! The group here is as revolutionary as Chick's own work on piano – a trio with Miroslav Vitous on bass and Roy Haynes on drums – generations coming together to really unlock the possibilities of a piano trio, with the same sort of freshness that you'd hear in the earliest work by Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett from the same time. By that, we mean that there's still elements here that tie the approach to older modes – but with a quality that's also instantly Chick's own – especially on the very compelling original material on the set. Titles include "Now He Sings – Now He Sobs", "Steps – What Was", "Matrix", and "The Law Of Falling & Catching Up". Features 8 bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ VariousNine O'Clock Drop – Compiled By Andy Weatherall ... CD
Nuphonic (UK), 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
The downtown days of post-disco live again in this stunning set of tracks from the 80s – not house, not club, but the kind of postpunk and electro cuts that had us popping on the dancefloor back in the Danceteria years! Andy Weatherall's really dug back this time, uncovering a sound that's been kind of lost in the washes of time – but which was crucial to the development of house and techno in the US. Most of these cuts have a surprisingly fresh electronic groove to them, with the kind of sinister twists that most of today's electronica kiddies could only dream of cooking up. The set includes a number of familiar classics, but even more great little tunes we'd totally forgotten about! Titles include "Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight" by Dominatrix, "Coup" by 23 Skidoo, "Water Line" by A Certain Ratio, "Warm Leatherette" by The Normal, "October Love Song (86 Version)" by Chris & Cosey, "My Spine Is The Bassline" by Shriekback, "Genius" by Quando Quango, "Black & White Mix Up" by 400 Blows, and "Nice Mover" by Gina X Performance. 13 cuts in all – and very fresh! ✨✧ VariousPulp Fusion 4 – Fully Loaded ... CD
Harmless (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The latest in this massive series of classic funky jazz – and quite possibly the best! This time round, the selection's a sparkling batch of super-hard grooves, with a lot of excellent cuts that we hardly ever see on vinyl at a nice price. The set kicks off with the amazing breakbeat track "Broasted Or Fried" by Willie Bobo, then leaps into "Gangster Boogie" by Chicago Gansters, "Afro Strut" by The Nite-Liters, "Hunk O Funk" by Jack McDuff, "Matrix" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Miss Funky Fox" by Exit 9, "I'm Not So Sure" by Milt Jackson, and "Easin In" by Edwin Starr. 12 cuts in all – and super funky! ✨✧ VariousSharon Signs To Cherry Red – Independent Women 1979 to 1985 ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The title's taken from a song that parodies the role of female artists on the Cherry Red label at the start of the 80s – but the set's a wonderful answer to that tune, and a huge illustration of the big wave of female talent to arise during the UK post-punk years! UK girl singers never found much of a place during the early years of punk – but as the sounds changed after the first few years, and opened up to a much wider range of indie expression, the role of female singers and bands did too – and became a very important part of the post-punk explosion. This collection brings together some of the best of those years – with an especially strong focus on the overlooked acts from the deeper side of the indies – less commercial talents who for Cherry Red and a number of other indies – some of whom are finally making an overdue appearance on the reissue market! 2CD set features 45 tracks in all, with detailed notes that provide a strong historical context – and titles include "Hate The Girl" by The Marine Girls, "The Jam Jar Song" by Ingrid, "Teenage Kicks" by Dawn Chorus & The Blue Tits, "Launderette" by Vivien Goldman, "Normal" by The Petticoats, "Hearbeat" by The Twinsets, "Little Miss Rainbow" by The Candees, "194 Radio City" by Jaqui & Jeanette, "Jimmy's Grin" by Margox, "I Hate Being In Love" by Amy & The Angels, "A Splash Of Red" by Trixie's Big Red Motorbike, "I Want To Be With You" by Jane & Barton, and the aforementioned "Sharon Signs To Cherry Red" by The Kamikaze Pilots. ✨✧ Bugge WesseltoftIM ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of great keyboard work from Bugge Wessltoft – a beautiful little record with a tremendous amount of sensitivity – hardly what we might have expected from his work of a few years before! The album shows Bugge's full evolution from a dancefloor-oriented artist to a more serious one – and it's got a richly compositional feel throughout – sounds that flow with a real sense of grace and presence, almost organic at points. Bugge plays a fair bit of Steinway, but also Fender Rhodes, Prophet, Electrix, and added percussion as well. Mari Boine sings on "Yoyk" – one of the most tuneful tracks in the set – and other titles include "Hit", "Min", "Fot", "Im", "Black Pearl Makes Dream", and "Wy". CD
