JJ Fad — Anotha Ho/Anotha Tramp/Supersonic ... 12-inch
Dream Team, 1987. Near Mint- (pic cover).... $8.99
Their first single, "Anotha Ho" is a kinda funny novelty track where JJ Fad dis most of the other female MCs from around that time (Roxanne Shante, Real Roxanne, Sparky D, Salt & Peppa), with a chorus "Anotha ho bites the dust" based on the Queen sample. Of course, "Supersonic" later went on to be the huge commercial radio hit.

Otis & Carla Band/Louise McCord — Tramp/Better Get A Move On (Live) ... 7-inch
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A sweet funky 45 debut for these 2 great cuts! "Tramp" is the original instrumental backing for the Otis & Carla hit – vocals stripped off and funky drums up large in the mix – making for all the funking vamping madness that first made us love the cut. Love that ripping guitar too! "Better Get A Move On" is a great lost bit of funk from the Wattstax concerts – showing up here for the first time on vinyl, and stepping out with some incredibly righteous vocals from Louise!

new Benny Westmore & His Private Numbers — (I'm Gonna Live 'Til I'm) One Hundred Years Old/Do The Monkey Tramp ... 7-inch
Papa Bill, 2013. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gritty throwback to the raw 60s R&B from Montreal's Benny Westmore & His Private Numbers. "(I'm Gonna Live 'Til I'm) One Hundred Years Old" is a lively number, backed by some heavy drums, punchy brass and a nice bit of electric guitar. "Do The Monkey Tramp" also has an old school rhythm & blues backdrop, but Benny goes wilder here on the vocal time – with some of wooliest, grittiest lead vocals we've heard on funk or soul single in quite a while – sweetened a bit by some nice female backing vocals.

Okko Bekker — East Indian Traffic/Ganges Delta ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy .... $8.99
Eastern tinged jazzy funk rock from Dutch born Okko Bekker! "East Indian Traffic" has a totally wicked funky backbone and a spindly, dexterous sitar way out front. Some jazz funk horns kick in as it goes along, too. "Ganges Delta" as another gem, less sorta soundtrack pulpy styled as the A-side, still a great and genre straddling number. Groovy stuff that appeared on Okko's cool Sitar & Electronics LP.

Deep Jazz — Spirits Up Above/No Doubt ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $7.99
Two spiritual jazz gems – back to back, and both from the excellent Deep Jazz combo! "Spirits Up Above" is that great Roland Kirk classic – taken here at a tightly swinging pace, and with a female lead vocal duo that really gives it a great flavor – putting the lyrics upfront even more than before, almost like the Bey Sisters – yet still leaving some room for a nice solo in the middle! "No Doubt" is an original by the group – resplendent with acoustic basslines right from the start, which set the tune off in a modal waltz mode that's mighty nice!
(Limited to 500 copies.)

Diazpora — Non Sports/Kate ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $7.99
Raw funk from Diazpora – a contemporary cut, but one with the same sort of gritty edge you'd expect from the Tramp label's usual rare funky 45s! "Non Sports" has an odd title, but an incredible groove – a right-on-the-money blend of fast drums, blasting horns, and riffing guitars – backed by the even greater "Kate", which has this romping groove, and a nice dose of organ – almost like a Meters' cut, but lots weirder with these strange horn passages!

Dokkerman & The Turkeying Fellaz — Broken/Plan B ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $8.99
Ragged rhythms and gritty guitar – a wicked little groover from Dokkerman, with a slightly exotic vibe too! The set begins like a sweet slow funk number – then offbeat reed lines come in over the top, and almost shade the tune with a snakey Ethiopian music sort of vibe! "Plan B" is more upbeat, with Hammond bubbling along with the fast bassline and drums – and some wah wah guitar that slides in to give a 70s funk feel to the sweet groove!

Jimmy Preacher Ellis — Story Of Jimmy Preacher Ellis 1963 to 1972 ... CD
Tramp (Germany), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99
Heavy funk from the great Jimmy Ellis – billed here with a "preacher" in his name, which is a great indication of the spiritual soul going on in the music! Jimmy's grooves here are definitely secular, but there's a depth that definitely echoes some gospel roots too – mixed nicely with some sharp jazzy changes in the instrumentation, and given a sweet funky 45 twist throughout! Some of the best cuts here are in that great space between late R&B and early soul – but often still have the funkier bite of later years too – a perfect blend that makes the music here really stand out, and which makes the set essential for fans of all things funky. Titles include "Cry No More", "Go Head On", "Kiddio", "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love", "Tough Competition", "Puttin It On Your Mind", "Work With What You Got", "Baby I Love You", "Happy To Be", and "Don't Tax Me In".

Four Wheel Drive — Fussin & Cussin (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), 1971. New Copy (reissue).... $8.99
Romping drums and some heavy horns – a killer bit of southern funk with a really hard edge – almost a cross between New Orleans grooves and some of the deeper sounds of the Carolina scene, wrapped up with an undeniably groovy feel! The vocal number has some great shouted lyrics that really set the pace for the tune – and the instrumental flipside features some wicked guitar taking a long, laidback solo!

Carl Sherlock Holmes — Investigation No 1 (with bonus track) ... CD
CRS/Tramp (Germany), 1974. New Copy .... $12.99
A funky holy grail – one of the rarest of the rare, and the only album ever cut by funky guitarist Carl "Sherlock" Holmes! Carl's work on the guitar is incredible – fast riffing and jazzy, with a style that's dirtier and messier than some of his 70s jazz funk contemporaries, but which also lays back on a few tracks so that Carl can deliver a sweetly soulful vocal. The album's a real blend of styles, all handled pretty darn well – from the hard funk of "Black Bag" and "Investigation", to the Latin jamming of "Modesa", the fast grooving of "Get Down Philly Town", and the mellow soul of "Think It Over" and "Your Game". Great stuff! This excellent 2012 CD version on Tramp includes one bonus track – "The Pot's Hot".

James & The Incredible Showman — James Brown's Boo-Ga-Loo (2 versions) ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $8.99
Fast, frenetic funk – a romping 60s take on "James Brown's Boogaloo" – done at a level that's even rawer than the original from The Godfather himself! The guitar moves super-fast – cutting the tune with a razor-sharp rhythm that's then peppered with burning organ lines – plus a bit of heavy tenor on one of the versions here!

Roy Porter — Story Of The Roy Porter Sound Machine – 1971 to 1975 ... LP
Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy 2 LPs .... $16.99
One of the coolest, grooviest cats who ever cut a record – an an artist with a really unique conception at the time of these recordings! Roy Porter got his start as a drummer during the bebop years, and worked hard on the LA scene of the R&B and soul scenes of the 50s and 60s – but to us, his crowning achievement is these amazing funk sides of the early 70s – amazingly complex, but right on the money too – and a whole new kind of music that's impossible to describe in words! Roy mixes funky drums with lots of cool jazzy changes – keyboard lines, horn parts, and bass bits that have the frenzy you might find in fusion, yet come across with the down-to-earth vibe of a funky 45 – a killer blend that goes way past jazz, and even most straight funk too – as you'll hear in this sweet little set. The package brings together all the best tracks from these key Porter years – and titles include "Jessica" and "Panama" in both vocal and instrumental versions, plus "Wow", "Funny Feelin", "Funky Twitch", "Love You", "Hense Forth", "Out On The Town Tonight", "Givin Me The Blues", "Waver-ing", "Party Time", and "Hip City".

Soul Brothers Inc — Pyramid/Girl In The Hot Pants ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy .... $8.99
Two wonderful gems from Soul Brothers Inc – both wicked funky numbers with a very unusual twist! "Pyramid" has these sweet strings next to a Latin-esque groove that moves with a nice bassy bottom – then slides into this warm vocal that's completely heartwarming, in ways that are very different for a groove like this! "Girl In The Hot Pants" is something else entirely – a heavy heavy funk number that begins with a great shouted vocal, then rolls into a fast-chugging groove that's completely outta sight! A stone burner that never lets up – and with a good sense of humor too!

Various — Ancestors Of Rap – A Collection Of Highly Underrated Prototype Rap Songs ... CD
Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99
The funky foundations of rap – and one of the best, most focused compilations of its kind we've ever stocked! You can truthfully call the treasure trove of funk singles here "pre-rap". Every track is a direct precursor. We mean that on the vocal tip – and also for the heavy funk bass and drums on the bottom end. We've seen some similar sets that go back to the 50s and even earlier – with jump jivin' R&B that originally planted the seeds – but this one focuses squarely on the late 60s and 70s material that most directly fertilized all rap to come! It also largely eschews the righteous and political precursors of the Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron school, for party funk proto rappers such as Pigmeat Markam, Bill "Butter Ball" Crane, Blowfly and others – but there's some socially aware cuts here, too. Great stuff with a just a couple of well-known numbers and many more funky rarities! 16 in all: "We Got The Number" by Pigmeat Markham, "Butterballs" by Butterball, "Get On The Good Foot" by James Brown, "Sesame Street" by Blowfly, "Smoke My Pipe" by AJ Rowe, "Snake Hips" by Timmy Rogers, "Everybody Says" by Billy Dee & Sugar Bear, "Do You Have A Good Woman" by Rufus Beacham and more.

Various — Feeling Nice – A Collection Of Super Rare & Super Heavy Funk 45s From The Late 60s & Early 70s ... LP
Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99
Rare raw funk from the late 60s & early 70s – singles dug from the regional US scenes for the most part (plus a stellar number from funky funky Trinidad) – incredible numbers from Guitar Ray, Don Ray & Hobbit, James Polk & The Brothers, The Herculoids, TD & Jimmy James 3, Soul Dukes and more! Feeling Nice was compiled by deep digging collectors and DJs Tobias Kirmayer and Daniel Wanders – and it's outstanding stuff that we're being introduced to for the first time in many cases. Classic level funky soul from acts that didn't get over nearly as big as they should have. Includes "Funky Pete Pts 1 & 2" by Guitar Ray, "James Brown Boo-Ga-Loo" by James In The Incredible Showmen, "Feeling Nice" by Clarence Curvan (the title honor goes to our man from Trinidad), "Back Door Jeannye" by James Polk & The Brothers, "Get Back" by The Herculoids, "Jalapeno Pep" by TD & Jimmy James 3, "Wine For The Party" by Sonrize, "Dance Party Pts 1 & 2" by JC & The Soul Angels and more 12 in all.

Various — Movements Vol 3 – Compiled By Tobias Kirmayer ... CD
Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99
The Movements series is back for a third volume and it's moving much deeper – the raw, smoldering funk of the previous sets is accompanied this time with groovy rare soul and jazz – and it's probably the best of the three Movements to date! Compiler Tobias Kirmayer has long showed a tremendous ear for funk & jazz rarities and this compilation is totally top notch – focus for the most part on 60s & 70s nuggets, many privately released and never really introduced to a large audience – featuring combos from around the US, a couple cuts born of the German jazz scene, a rare Italian soundtrack number and more! Titles include "Something Else" by The Iris Bell Trio featuring Butch Miles, "Backlash" by The Fats Gains Orchestra, "Let's Get Together" by The Echomen, "Angel Food" by The Port Angels (the lone recent recording and a tune that fits perfectly with the old school funky soul), "Grito Pidiendo" by Ernesto Cardenal, "Hello, Quincey" by Orchestra Luis Enriquez, "Song For My Father" by The Joe Viera Sextett, "The Serpent Speaks" by Solar Plexus and more. 11 tracks in all.

Various — Movements Vol 5 – Compiled By Tobias Kirmayer ... CD
Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99
Rare gems from the funky 45 underground of the late 60s and early 70s – and maybe the most smoking volume in this all-great series so far! The sound is hard and heavy right from the start – very much in the best mode of the funky 45 reissues we've been hearing from Tramp in recent years – right up there with the deepest funk you'd get from labels like Ace/Kent or Jazzman on their best compilations! And although other volumes have all been great, there's a special sort of magic this time around – an edge that really shows the evolution of Tramp's ear for picking a groove – and deep notes that also show their growing knowledge of the most obscure cuts from back in the day. We can guarantee there's plenty here you don't already have in your record collection – and titles include "Funky Screw" by Lee Fields, "Soul Chicken" by Bobby Allen & The Exceptions, "Ease It On In" by Sunrize, "Deepest Sympathy" by Theodis Ealey, "Tend To Your Business (parts 1 & 2)" by Wildfire, "Pat's Rubber Band" by Alley Pat, "Puttin It On Your Mind" by Jimmy Ellis, "Nobody Loves Me Like My Baby" by Jimmy Gilford, "99/44 100 Pure Love" by Al Reed, and "Monkey In A Sack" by Lil Buck & The Top Cats.

Various — Movements Vol 4 – Compiled By Tobias Kirmayer ... CD
Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99 Just Sold Out!
A massive fourth volume to this totally great series – and quite honestly, maybe the funkiest so far! Compiler Tobias Kirmayer really knows his stuff – after years of recording and reissuing great music on his own Tramp label – and if anything, his time in the funky underground has only given him a sharper ear for rare singles and lost soulful nuggets – as you'll hear in this wonderful compilation! The set's overflowing with killers from the late 60s and early 70s – and most of them are numbers we've never seen reissued before – quite a feat, given how many funk collections have shown up over the years. Snowboy bills the set as a "high-quality collection of obscenely rare" funk and soul 45s – and he's totally right about all of that – although we'll also add that musically, it's pretty darn great too! Titles include "Sticks & Stones" by Dino & The Dell-Tones, "Shakers & Movers (parts 1 & 2)" by Carl Westmoreland, "Talk About Soul" by Rudy Tee & The Reno-Bops, "Discotheque Soul (edit)" by Ricky Williams, "Hey Rugh Nut" by Zodiacs, "Hipster" by C Forture & J Brinson, "I Don't Think We Are Going Back Again" by Soul Brothers Inc, "Machine Gun" by Odyssey Group, "Night Club" by The Dave Harris Trio, "Honky Games" by Iris Bell with the Jive-Ettes, and "Booty Whip (unreleased acetate version)" by Bro Byron.

new Harmonica Paul — Motherless Child (double A side) ... 7-inch
Jude/Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The rare early 70s funky treasure by Harmonica Paul! You might think from his name that Harmonica Paul would be more of a blues figure, but this here gem is a nicely simmering funky soul tune. The groove is raw, but absolutely killer – with Harmonica Paul singing and playing guitar – and never picking up a harmonica. His guitar grooves along nicely with the funky drums for most of the track, and switches to more of a wah wah sound later on into it , for an invigorating little twist. An amazing tune!

Bad-rapping funk from Johnnie Morisette – laying down rhymes over great funky backings from the Jenell Hawkins Sextette – all in an ultra-hip style that's somewhere between the James Brown recordings of Hank Ballard in the early 70s (think "Blackenized"), and the style of Lighting Rod on the Hustlers Convention album!

new Clarence Reid — Miss Hot Stuff/Mr Hot Stuff ... 7-inch
Alston/Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Clarence Reid at his funky best – heard here on a wicked wicked groove – one with a vibe that's right up there with the sharp-edged best of Joe Quarterman! Reid's always great at this point in his career – but there's something about this single that's even a cut above – the way the bass comes down on its own, between the horns and the drums – creating this extra layer that's almost its own groove on the cut! "Mr Hot Stuff" is similar, but a bit different too – with drums that break nicely, and some mighty mean piano too!

new Various — This Is My Thing! – Deep Funk/Jazz Breaks/Hip Hop/Afrosoul – Selected By Tobias Kirmayer ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 2007. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Contemporary grooves, but all pretty darn funky – thanks to an excellent track selection by Tobias Kirmayer – the same guy who brought us the excellents Movements collections! A few of the titles here are of older vintage, but most are pulled from the same deep funk underground that Kirmayer services with his Tramp Records label – groups steeped in the styles of the 60s and 70s underground, but who serve up new work that's filled with plenty of funky roots! Despite the wide range of styles promised in the title, most of the titles here are on the grittier side of the spectrum – which is a good thing for us – and even the few tracks that are a bit more programmed still work with plenty of soulful and jazzy elements to keep things real throughout. Titles include "Nothin But A Party" by The Blenders, "Get Clean" by The Nitesounds, "Skins Funk" by Skin Williams & His Dominoes, "Bubbles" by The Boogoos, "Violet" by Hi-Fly Orchestra, "Rhythmo" by Dusty, "Get High" by Dr Sonnenschein, "Barbados Stew" by Caldonia, "First Time Around" by Sagaflex & Rudy Tee, and "Trip To Afrika" by Baccarola.

new Qualitons — Panoramic Tymes ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 2010. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Hammond beat grooves from The Qualitons – representing funky Budapest! The Qualitons are a unique group in the funky organ underground, regardless of region – drawing from a well of influences that range from rave up funk to wild-eyed vintage R&B & garage rock. It's really exciting stuff, and feels no more or less authentic than the influences – generally with a hard driving undercurrent of heavy drums and thick washes of organ. The strains of beat group and garage rock give it them an incendiary edge that we just love, but they slow it down in spots that show quite a range, and these guys can seriously play! The group is armed with a couple vocal tunes and a bunch of great instrumentals. Titles include "C'mon Baby", "Get Heavy With Me", "Overdose", "Ejjel A Sotetben", "Wandering Will", "AC Blues", "Soul Bowl/Kekfeny", "Aua", "More Plutonium" and more.

The flip is entirely different style of funk – a cut with more of an organ and horns-heavy Afro Funk approach – and it's a strong one. 2 sides of one stellar combo!

new Al Reed — 99 44/100 Pure Love/Shake 'Em Up ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Rare late 60s funky R&B from singer Al Reed! Both sides are written by Reed, recorded for his own Axe label and arranged by New Orleans legend Wardell Quezerque. "99 44/100 Pure Love" has an unruly title, alright – but the funky dancefloor groove, well, it just plain rules! Charismatic, laidback vocals and steady, slow-building rhythms, backed by classic-level Wardell horn arrangements! "Shake 'Em Up" is just as great, if not better – with some piano and guitar in the mix more prominently –and a groove that indeed shakes pretty feverishly!

new James Reese — Let's Go (It's Summertime) (long, short) ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), 1975. Used (reissue).... $7.99 Out Of Stock
A different version of "Let's Go" than then one issued by Jazzman a few years back – a whole new recording of the tune done by James Reese in the mid 70s, with a really righteous vibe overall! The style's got a soaring Fantasy Records sort of sound – a bit rougher in production, but really pushing to the skies with well-crafted horn parts, romping rhythms, and these great chorus vocals that elevate the mood of the whole track beautifully!

new Fred Berlipp Band — Beating Steel/Law Breakers ... 7-inch
Selected Sound/Tramp (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
Not really "beating steel", but a tune that's definitely got a beat right from the start – a mod mix of romping drums and crime-styled guitar, but recorded with a slightly warmer sound library groove too! Horns blast in strongly once the tune gets rolling – and there's an urgent vibe that feels like "Peter Gunn" taken at triple-speed! "Law Breakers" is another nice crime-jazz number – more twangy guitar over these rolling mod piano lines – almost a variation on the theme from the a-side!

new Blue Rhythm Combo — Black Water Gold/Take The Funky Feeling ... 7-inch
Merry Disc/Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
The Blue Rhythm Combo take on "Black Water Gold" – a cut that's already a 70s funk classic, thanks to the original reading by African Music Machine – but even funkier here, with lots of bass that really bumps it up from the bottom! There's a cool kind of wheet/whistle that lurks somewhere in the background – and the bass and drum bits are really amazing, with a breakdown in the middle that's worth the price of the record alone! The flipside has lots of funky feeling too – and some massive massive drums that don't exactly break in the usual way, but really set the tune on fire!

new Hi Fly Orchestra — Mambo Atomico ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 2008. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
The grooviest work so far from the Hi-Fly Orchestra – a set that moves even farther past the sublime territory of their debut, into a really classic blend of soul jazz and Latin rhythms – produced to perfection with a wonderfully solid feel! Instrumentation here is all live – a blend of sax, flute, trombone, Fender Rhodes, piano, and plenty of percussion – all handled with a feel that takes us back to some of our favorite territory on Verve Records from the 60s, those wonderful records that blended elements from the Latin underground with some of the harder jazz leanings of the period – a legacy these guys are happy to add to with their wonderful grooves. Miriam Aida guests on vocals on two cuts, but most titles are instrumental – and tunes include "Afro Boo", "Carioquinha", "Polonesa", "Mrs Shing A Ling", "Hi Fly Stomp", "Mambo Atomico", and a surprisingly groovy cover of "Crosstown Traffic".

new Kaleta & Zozo Afrobeat — Country Of Guns ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 2008. New Copy .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
Hypnotic grooves from Kaleta – a searing set of Afrobeat titles that really burns with a lot of energy! There's a complexity here that goes beyond most other contemporary Afro Funk ensembles – one that takes especial joy in the solo parts, which are really well-crafted, and have an almost jazz-like sophistication at times – especially on the reed parts. But the complexity never gets in the way of the rhythms, either – as these are right on the money, and a great balance between African roots and funkier elements – every bit what we'd expect from a release on the mighty Tramp Records label! LP features 4 long tracks – "Get Up", "Baba Nla Iya", "Shake Your Nyansh", and "Fimile".

new Les Baxter — Fruit Of Dreams (Ports Of Pleasure/The Sacred Idol) ... CD
Capitol/El (UK), 1957/1960. New Copy .... $13.99
2 rare slices of exotica by Les Baxter – back to back on one CD! The first half of the set features material from the album Ports Of Pleasure – a dreamy exploration of south sea ideals that's got a more lightly drifting quality than some of Baxter's more percussive exotica albums, and which is awash in dreamy soundscapes penned by Les himself! The orchestrations are large and bold throughout – mixing strings and woodwinds almost in a soundtrack-y mode – but always with the light sense of interplay that makes Baxter's work so great. Titles include "Monkey Dance Of Bali", "Pearls Of Ceylon", "Tahiti A Summer Night At Sea", "Hong Kong Cable Car", "Tramp Steamer To Singapore", "Harem Silks From Bombay", and "Sidewalk Cafes Of Saigon". The Sacred Idol is a real standout set from the end of Les Baxter's run at Capitol Records – originally scored for a film that was never released, but a great set of tracks that more than stands strongly on its own! The theme here is a Mexican/Latin American one – explored by Baxter with his trademark blend of larger orchestrations and lighter exotica touches – often swirling around in an extremely evocative mode that makes us wish the film had been issued to the public, and at a few key moments even hinting at the funkier modes that would follow on some of Les' later work for other labels. Titles include "Aqueducts", "Gardens Of The Moon", "Pyramid Of The Sun", "Temple Of Gold", and "Procession Of The Princes".

Betty Davis — They Say I'm Different ... LP
Just Sunshine/Light In The Attic, 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $18.99
Killer work from Betty Davis – one of the most impressive female funk talents ever! If you ever needed a definition of funk, this record may well be it – snapping drums, sharp-edged guitars, and sex-filled basslines that slink and slide all over the bottom of the grooves – a perfect setting for Betty's incredible vocals – which themselves have a smokey, raspy quality that's completely unique! At times, Davis is almost speaking, but at others she's practically screaming – belting out the lyrics in a way that makes you feel like you're sharing some space with her at the end of the bar as she gets more and more wound up about issues and people who are on her mind. And as if the vocals weren't enough, the backings are incredible too – filled with drum breaks and basslines that few other albums can match – all wrapped around badass tunes that include "Shoo-B-Doop & Cop Him", "He Was A Big Freak", "70's Blues", "Git In There", "Special People", "Don't Call Her No Tramp", and "Your Mama Wants Ya Back".

Sammy Davis, Jr. — That's All! ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Very Good 2LP Gatefold .... $1.99
The greatest entertainer ever? We think so – and this 2LP set offers Sammy D in the best possible way to get him: live, and in the very familiar turf of the Sands Hotel. This live album, and it's counterpart (At The Cocoanut Grove, also on Reprise) are, in our opinion, Sammy's best recordings – because they feature him ripping through a bunch of material, doing lots of great impressions and medleys, and really swinging with a tight little combo led by Michael Silva, the drummer. The groove is really jazzy – way jazzier than on some of Sammy's studio LPs from the time – and he runs through a range of material from pop tunes to standards, done in a style that's far different than you'd expect for the titles. The vocals are tight, heartfelt, but also given a professional little finesse that really makes them sparkle. Titles include "Ain't I", "Another Spring", "On A Clear Day", "As Long As She Needs Me", "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and 2 fantastic medleys with lots of jazzy songs. Heck, Dean Martin never got a chance to cut a double live album – and Frank really ever did one – so given that Sammy got a chance to do two of them, you've gotta figure the format really worked for him! This is the real Mr. Entertainment, and you owe it to yourself to hear him as he really was.

Jerry Jerome — On The Wild Side ... LP
ABC, Mid 50s. Very Good .... $9.99
A wild and weird one! Jerry Jerome looks stately on the front cover – but he plays a strange shaped "straight alto" sax – one that basically looks like a regular horn, with the kink pushed out of it! The instrument has a raspy blown-out tone that's more tenor than anything else – and Jerry's playing here in small group setting with R&B touches that include vibes by Tyree Glenn, organ by Samson Horton, guitar by Al Caiola, and some occasional vocals by The Honeydreamers. The feel is a lot like Willis Jackson's "gator horn" – and the record's a lively batch of groovers that feels more like jukebox tonk than the usual staid ABC jazz side from the 50s. Titles include "Thou Swell", "The Lady is A Tramp", "Slaughter On Tenth Ave", "Nevertheless", and "This Can't Be Love" – all done at a nice romping clip!
(Back cover has some wear and staining.)

Jerry O — Funky Four Corners/Soul Lover ... 7-inch
Boo Ga Loo, Late 60s. Good .... $14.99
One of the best versions of "Funky Four Corners" we've ever heard! The bass is rattling along at a level so loud and heavy that it's bound to pop the top off your speaker – while Jerry screams and shouts his way through the lyrics in a way that would make James Brown proud, a fact that he even acknowledges when he shouts "Sorry JB!" at one point in the cut! "Soul Lover" is fantastic too – a funky answer song to "Tramp", with a similar hard sock beat, and a hard break at the intro, which is augmented here by conga work! Both cuts are great – and one of the best singles ever by Jerry O!

new Michel Legrand — Michel Legrand Big Band Plays Richard Rodgers ... LP
Philips, Mid 60s. Very Good+ .... $4.99
A pretty wonderful album by Michel Legrand – way better than you'd guess from the title! Sure, the tunes are mostly numbers by Richard Rodgers, but Legrand handles them here with the best of his soundtrack skills – really opening them up with some amazingly deft arrangements, and working with a stellar set of American jazz players to give the tunes a sound that's as jazzy as possible – and swinging them with the inherent lyricism that always makes us love his music! Players are a great lineup – with Clark Terry and Ernie Royal on trumpets, Urbie Green and Bob Brookmeyer on trombones, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Jerry Dodgion and Phil Woods on alto, Julious Watkins on French horn, Gary Burton on vibes, and Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones on piano. Titles include "This Can't Be Love", "Falling In Love With Love", "Bali Hai", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "There's A Small Hotel", and "The Lady Is A Tramp".

Joe Tex — Live & Lively ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+ .... $15.99
A tasty live set, with a smoking raw groove that you don't always get on Joe's studio albums! The crowd really goes wild for Joe – and with only some small group backing behind him, he's got nothing left to do but go over the top with his vocals! As proof of that, the record includes the great breakbeat track "Papa Was, Too", with a hard funky beat and sample riff that you'll recognize from way back. (Not only that, but the cut's a great answer to Otis & Carla's famous "Tramp".) Other tracks include the hit "Skinny Legs & All" (an answer to "Big Leg Woman"?), plus "Wooden Spoon", "Don't Give Up", and "Show Me".

An incredible album from Mel Torme – easily his best set ever, and a record that helped raise the bar for all other singers back in the 50s! The lineup features some great vibes from Manfred Burzlaff, whose ringing tones make for a slightly different vocal set than usual – a bit looser, and not as much the straight piano date you'd expect – although there is some nice piano on the record too, courtesy of Bob Degen. The tunes are mostly standards, but Gloria swings them with a sweet soulful undercurrent – in ways that make the record come across with the same charms you'd get from an early 60s record by Teri Thornton or Pat Bowie. Titles include "Get Out Of Town", "Day In Day Out", "By Myself", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "One Note Samba", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me".

"Cherry Juice" is a monster right at the start – a cut with this badass bassline that dips deep and seems to pull down the whole combo – then pops up shimmering with a feel that's like some lost groove from a 70s blacksploitation score! And by that, we don't mean any sort of "fake" attempt to sound funky – but a stone gem right from the start, from all the tight instrumentation on down to the right sort of production needed to get the whole thing on tape the right way! "Hoodoo Man" begins with a massive drum break – almost in the "Tramp" mode, opening up into this wicked laidback guitar groove that's mighty nice!

new Juarez E Seu Conjunto — Masterplay Goes To New York ... CD
Masterplay/Discobertas (Brazil), 1963. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
Killer bossa jazz from tenor saxophonist Juarez – billed as a New York record on the cover, but a real Brazilian cooker all the way through! The only "New York" aspect of the set seems to be the American tunes chosen for the date – which are then recast with some sweet bossa rhythms by the combo – usually really driving and lively, with plenty of room for tenor work by the leader! Other key players include Neco on guitar, Fats Elpidio on piano, and Nelson Dos Santos on trombone – and also most of the arrangements on the date too. Titles include "The Tender Trap", "Mack The Knife", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Lullaby Of Broadway", and "How High The Moon".

new Various — We All Love Ella – Celebrating the First Lady Of Song ... CD
Verve, 2007. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
An all-star tribute to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald – one that features a number of contemporary singers trying to recapture the magic of Ella's best work from the 50s and 60s! We'll be honest in saying that we were a bit suspicious of this one at first, but the quality is surprisingly strong – mostly in an acoustic, swinging, jazzy mode – with arrangements predominantly by Rob Mounsey, and most singers really doing their best to hit a Fitgerald sort of groove. It's interesting to hear some of these vocalists doing their best to match Ella's phrasing, on titles that include "Blues In The Night" by Ledisi, "The Lady Is A Tramp" by Queen Latifah, "A Tisket A Tasket" by Natalie Cole, "Lullaby Of Birdland" by Chaka Khan, "Angel Eyes" by KD Lang, "Reaching For The Moon" by Lizz Wright, "Someone To Watch Over Me" by Gladys Knight, "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me" by Etta James, and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Ella Fitzgerald & Stevie Wonder.

new Lowell Fulsom — Lowell Fulsom In A Heavy Bag ... CD
Jewel/Fuel 2000, 1969. New Copy .... $6.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
The heavy bag here is a bluesy one – as Lowell Fullsom's working in territory that's got a lot of rootsy, almost southern blues in the mix – but which still cracks out at times with his hipper, more funk-tuned groove! There's a few tracks on here that hearken towards the "Tramp" groove from his Kent years – like "Lady In The Rain" and "Sleeper" – both of which have a nicely funky undercurrent and vamping guitar that really snaps along with the rhythm. Other numbers have a straighter blues feel, but one that still has a sinister approach that goes way past cliches for the college crowd – showing Lowell to be firmly in charge, no matter what the setting. Tracks include "Sleeper", "Lady In The Rain", "Man Of Motion", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", "Look At You Baby", "Trouble Everywhere", and "This Feeling". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Stoned To The Bone", "Every Second A Fool Is Born", and "Lonesome Christmas".

new Patti Page — In The Land Of Hi Fi (second cover) ... LP
EmArcy/Mercury, 1956. Used .... $0.49 Out Of Stock
Patti Page is definitely in the land of hi-fi here – sounding a lot groovier than on some of her other 50s albums, thanks to some really wonderful arrangements by Pete Rugolo! Pete swings things hard here – with the same dramatic flair and playful turns of his own instrumental albums on Mercury – creating a setting that brings a lot more life into Patti Page than you might expect! There's lots of dynamic horn work on most numbers – bursting out and blasting forth with a quality that really helps direct the sound of the vocals – and titles include "Nevertheless", "A Foggy Day", "My Sin", "Love For Sale", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and "I Didn't Know About You".

new SupertrampCrime Of The Century ... LP
A&M, 1974. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pure mainstream 70s pop genius – and the most fully formed of all early Supertramp albums! The set's a masterpiece from start to finish – filled with themes of loss and loneliness, but served up by the group with an incredibly redemptive sense of majesty and power. The keyboards on the set work perfectly with the oddly-timed rhythms of the tunes – and there's a great blend here between high concept and straight ahead pop. Titles include "School", "Bloody Well Right", "Asylum", "Dreamer", "Rudy", and "Crime Of The Century".
