new Jim Hall with Tom Harrell — These Rooms (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1988. Used .... $21.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jim Hall's working here beautifully with trumpeter Tom Harrell – a player whose spacious tones are a perfect match for Jim's open, airy phrasing on the guitar – all supported beautifully by rhythms from Steve LaSpina on bass and Joey Baron on drums! Harrell plays mostly flugelhorn on the date, using the instrument with a sense of space that reminds us of that point when Art Farmer first started really opening up – but taken to even greater extremes, with very careful placement of notes that says a hell of a lot with a hell of a little! Titles include "Bimini", "All Too Soon", "These Rooms", "Darn That Dream", and "Cross Court". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Where Or When", "My Funny Valentine", and "From Now On".

Jimmy Lewis — Give The Poor Man A Break ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $15.99
Wonderful southern soul from the great Jimmy Lewis – one of the best unsung talents of the southern 70s scene, and a figure who's barely been represented properly on records! This excellent set is Kent's follow-up to their earlier Still Wanna Be Black CD on Jimmy – and like that one, it's compiled from a bounty of rare recordings that have rarely or never been issued before, all done by Jimmy in a setting that's sophisticated yet intimate, taking the southern soul mode of expression into an adult soul world of the 70s, and featuring some of the best songwriting you'll ever hear from the era. Jimmy is A-#1 in our book – and the quality of work on this CD is impeccable – at a level that you'd never find, even if you tracked down all of Jimmy's rare singles from the 70s. There's a total of 23 tracks, many never heard before, all excellent, with great notes and wonderful sound. Titles include "Who's The Weaker Sex", "She's Gone", "Ain't No Need", "Hot Southern Love", "Leave Him", "I'm Gonna Get You Girl", "Pool Hall Willie", "Tom Boy", "Give The Poor Man A Break", and "When You Get A Little, Give A Little".

Wilson Pickett — Wicked Pickett ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A breakout record that forever put Wilson Pickett at the top of the heap for mainstream 60s soul – thanks to the oft-covered, endlessly played "Mustang Sally" single that leads off the set! And although the groove established by that track helped Pickett establish an audience on both sides of the fence, the full album itself is much deeper stuff – a searing album of southern-styled soul recorded with some great Muscle Shoals production – Rick Hall and Tom Dowd at the helm – and key session players who include Charlie Chalmers, Chips Moman, Tommy Cogbill, Spooner Oldham, and Roger Hawkins – all of whom help give the record the intimate, earthy feeling that helped Pickett step out with a stronger sound than earlier recordings. (And in fact, this album's perhaps a key pre-Aretha Franklin example of the way that Atlantic's vision could majestically change the sound of an already-known soul artist – bringing them far deeper than ever before.) Titles include "Mustang Sally", "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", "Nothing You Can Do", "Three Time Loser", "Sunny", "She Ain't Gonna Do Right", "Knock On Wood", "Time Is On My Side", and "You Left The Water Running".

new Bobby Bare — Real Thing/I Hate Goodbyes/Ride Me Down Easy ... CD
RCA/Omni (Australia), 1970/1973. New Copy .... $16.99 19.99 Out Of Stock
Classic level greatness from Bobby Bare – with the complete The Real Thing and I Hate Goodbyes/Ride Me Down Easy records from 1970 and 1973 – plus a smattering of some his best ever recordings as bonus tracks! At his peak – and we consider this to be peak material – Bobby Bare had and easygoing, laconic storyteller vocal style that's as great as any of his more celebrated peers – plus the songs of friend and collaborator Shel Silverstein as well as songs by Tom T Hall, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver, Mickey Newbury and other legends to work with. Add to that a perfect mix Nashville Sound lushness and stripped-down country laid down by the best session musicians in the business and the recipe is pretty close to perfection! 24 tracks in all: "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", "The Chicago Story", "Ride Me Down Easy", "I'll Love The Hurt Out Of You", "(Margie's At) The Licoln Park Inn", "A Restless Wind", "Send Tomorrow To The Moon", "Poison Red Berries", "California Dreams", "Tulsa County", "I Hate Goodbyes", "Barbara Joy", "What's Your Mama's Name, Child", "A Train That Never Runs" and more.

Louis Armstrong — Satchmo At Symphony Hall – The Complete Performances ... CD
Decca/Verve, 1947. New Copy 2 CDs .... $31.99 35.99
A classic live date from Satchmo – and expanded to include the complete performances on that legendary night at Boston's Symphony Hall – for the first time ever! Recorded in November of 1947 and originally released in '51, it's never before been issued with both the first and second sets that night. There's also a number of great tunes here that were released before in edited versions, but fully presented here. It's such wonderful stuff – both as a top-shelf document of this period of American jazz – and as a brilliant example of Satcho's charming stage presence. His trumpet and solo vocals are well captured, and you can here up humming along on the instrumentals, too. The players at this point who are All Stars, indeed, include Jack Teagarden on vocals and trombone, Barney Bigard on clarinet, Dick Cary on piano, Arvell Shaw on bass, and Sid Catlett on drums – plus some great vocals by Velma Middleton. 29 songs on 2CDs – in a hardback package with a great booklet – and featuring "When It's Sleepy Time Down South", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Body And Soul", "Steak Face", "Back O'Town Blues", "St James Infirmary", "Mop Mop", "Jack Armstrong Blues", "That's My Desire", "C Jam Blues", "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", "Mahogany Hall Stomp" and more – many previously unreleased!

Nat BirchallSacred Dimension ... CD
Sound Soul & Spirit (UK), 2011. New Copy .... $13.99
The most fully-formed album from Nat Birchall so far – and one that has him definitely going into another dimension in jazz, thanks to a slightly expanded lineup! The shift here is almost that betweeen the 60s spiritual sounds on Impulse Records, and the label's groundbreaking material in the post-Coltrane years of the early 70s – a time when folks like Pharoah Sanders, Marion Brown, Alice Coltrane, and others were really helping to redefine a sense of spiritualism in jazz – yet always at the best moments still hanging onto the core sense of individualism that first got the movement started in the 60s! Nat Birchall is at the head of the group – blowing fantastic lines on tenor and soprano sax – searching and righteous, but always with a sense of gentleness too – a really special blend that makes the album sparkle. Other players include Adam Fairhall on piano, Corcy Mwamba on vibes, and Rachael Gladwin on harp – and there's lots of nice percussion touches that are nestled in on the bottom. Birchall wrote all tracks – and titles include "Ancient World", "Dance Of The Mystic", "Radiant Will", "Peace In Ninevah", and "Sacred Dimension".

Nat BirchallSixth Sense ... CD
Sound Soul & Spirit (UK), 1999. New Copy .... $11.99
The earliest work we've ever heard from tenorist Nat Birchall – a player who's really blown our minds with his recent albums from the UK! This set's from the late 90s, and already has Birchall really finding his voice – a freewheeling approach to tenor that's unlike most of his contemporaries, and definitely steeped in strong influences from the spiritual jazz generation! Yet while recent records have Nat in a more meditative mode, the sound here is almost more explosive – with echoes of 60s avant in the mix, amidst some bold rhythmic impulses from the group – almost with a quality that reminds us of some of those brilliant moments when an American soloist would combine with a European combo in the heady 60s scene. In addition to Birchall's tenor, the group also features John Hulme on trumpet and flugelhorn, Richard Wetherall on piano, Dave Tompkins on bass, and Danny Ward on drums – and titles include "Redemption", "Helix Nebula", "Unity Blues", "Passion Dance", and "Ism Schism".

Booker T & The MGs — Universal Language ... LP
Elektra, 1977. Very Good .... $9.99
A sweet sweet set of electric 70s funk – recorded by Booker T during a brief, but well-needed reunion with the MGs! The sound here is quite different than Stax-era MGs – as Booker plays a range of keyboards, not just organ – and the grooves have these great jazz funk touches at the bottom – almost a CTI vibe at times, but packed with the tighter energy you'd expect from the group! Steve Cropper's guitar is great – super-fine, and razor-sharp – really helping cut a nice edge on the cuts – over bass from Donald Duck Dunn and drums from Willie Hall, who's the only new member of the group. In a way, the album feels like mid 70s efforts from Johnny Hammond or Jimmy Smith – sweetly soaring on a let-loose 70s vibe. Titles include the funky break track "Grab Bag", plus "Sticky Stuff", "Moto Cross", "Tie Stick", and "Space Nuts".
(Cover has a bit of light wear.)

Tim Buckley — Goodbye & Hello ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $29.99
Easily one of our favorite albums by Tim Buckley – and a record that really opens up with some key jazzy touches! Buckley's still got his roots in folk here, and his vocals are yet to hit the extremes of Starsailor or Lorca – but there's also a new sense of inflection to the way he puts over the lyrics, shaded in by use of vibes, kalimba, harmonium, and harpsichord – the latter two of which are played on the session by Don Randi! Tracks are relatively short, but high in concept – and include the protest song "No Man Can Find The War", plus "Hallucinations", "Phantasmagoria In Two", "Carnival Song", "Pleasant Street", "Morning Glory", and "Goodbye & Hello".
(Butterfly label pressing. Cover has mark from sticker removal, an unglued bottom seam, some wear, and a spot of residue on the front.)

new Donald Byrd & Gigi Gryce — Jazz Lab (Columbia) ... LP
Columbia, Late 50s. Good .... $3.99
Wonderful work from the team of Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce! Byrd is at his youthful best here – blowing with a soulful imagination that's surprising, given his young age, and honed to a modern edge by the arrangements of Gryce. Conversely, Gryce's tone on the alto is fantastic – less measured than on other albums, and perhaps given a bit more of a gutsy push by his work here with Byrd. Of course, the rest of the group helps, too – and with Art Taylor on drums, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Wendell Marshall on bass, the whole set grooves nicely! Titles include "Little Niles", "Sans Souci", "Nica's Tempo", and "Speculation".
(6 eye logo pressing, with deep groove.)

John Carpenter — Fog (2CD expanded edition) ... CD
Silva Screen (UK), 1980. New Copy 2 CDs .... $17.99 19.98
Wonderful sounds from the great John Carpenter – one of those records that reminds us that his music is often just as important as the images he puts on the screen! Carpenter's music for The Fog follows nicely in his work for other films – particularly Halloween – in that it's got this slow-building style that often makes great use of keyboards – often used sparely, with a really spooky sort of energy – and even more space, and at slower speed than his other horror soundtracks! The style really fits the "fog" theme of the film – and this 2CD version features the 2000 remix of the soundtrack album, plus 1980 score cues – and a bonus interview with Jamie Lee Curtis too. Titles include "Matthew Ghost Story", "Tommy Tells Of Ghost Ships", "Reel 9", "Blake In The Sanctuary", "Number 6", "Walk To Lighthouse", "Dane", "Andy's In Trouble", and "The Fog Enters Town".

Paul Desmond — Desmond Blue ... LP
RCA, 1962. Very Good .... $4.99
A cool jazz classic from altoist Paul Desmond and guitarist Jim Hall! The album was recorded under Desmond's name, but Hall's the guitarist throughout, and his playing lends an indescribably wonderful edge to the set, making the album a real team effort! Unlike other RCA sides by Hall and Desmond, this one features the pair with larger string backings by Bob Prince, which create a dreamy pillow for alto and guitar to solo across. Titles include the Desmond originals "Late Lament" and "Desmond Blue" – plus "Ill Wind", "My Funny Valentine", and "Like Someone In Love".
(Black label Living Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear, splitting on the top and bottom seams, some stickers, and several pieces of tape.)

new Dub Club — Signs & Wonders In Dub ... LP
Stones Throw/Dub Club, 2013. New Copy .... $18.99
Classic-style dubwise recordings – spearheaded by Dub Club DJ Tom Chasteen and Jamaica's Tippa Lee – each dub featuring dancehall icons who have taken the stage over the years at Dub Club events in LA! Dub Club has been championing classic and contemporary dub, dancehall and reggae for years on the west coast club scene – and this record doesn't set out to replicate a Dub Club live show or DJ nights as much as it serves as a fresh tribute, that's also a creative and original piece of work. Jointly produced by Chasteen and Lee and recorded over a few years period in both LA and Jamaica. A hand-picked group of LA reggae musicians laid down the instrumentation, including Ras Benjy, Eddie Ruscha, Freddie Flint, Mark Lightcap, Kofi, Roger Rivas and Bongo Herman. Stan Getz — Stan Getz At Tanglewood ... LP
RCA, 1967. Very Good .... $1.99
A beautiful bit of lost Getz from the 60s – a record of incredible depth that's somehow gotten lost in the shuffle of time! The album has Stan playing at Tanglewood with a core group that includes Gary Burton, Jim Hall, Steve Swallow, and Roy Haynes, plus musical backings by the Boston Pops – conducted by Arthur Fiedler in a style that's somehow without any of the hoke of his other recordings of the time, and which manages to give Stan some of the best "with orchestra" backings he's ever gotten! There's none of the overwrought modernism of some of the other Getz/orchestra collaborations that we never seem to like as much – and Stan's in incredible Spring Rain-like tone on the whole thing – blowing magically through both the lush and grooving numbers alike! Titles include "Tanglewood Concerto", "Where Do You Go", "Three Ballads For Stan", "A Song After Sundown", and a great orchestral take on "Girl From Ipanema".
(Red label mono pressing, with deep groove. Cover has masking tape on the top and bottom seams, a spot of tape on the spine, and WGN Library letters on the back.)

Coleman Hawkins — Real Thing (Soul/Red Garland Trio/At Ease With) ... LP
Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold .... $4.99
A great collection – one that features a side of material from the album Soul, with piano by Ray Bryant; and another side of a set recorded with the Red Garland Trio. Also features the full album At Ease – wonderful late work by Coleman Hawkins – a player who was very much "at ease" with himself at the time, and opened up tremendously on albums like this. The format is beautiful – simple small group backings by Tommy Flanagan, Wendell Marshall, and Osie Johnson – with Coleman out front, blowing these deep and mellow tenor lines that could stop a locomotive in its tracks! Titles include "At Dawning", "I'll Get By", "For You For Me For Evermore", and "Mighty Lak A Rose".

Jimi Hendrix Experience — Electric Ladyland ... LP
Reprise, 1968. Very Good 2LP Gatefold .... $19.99
A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to comeout in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all fell just right, and the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. A massive 2LP effort that include s"Voodoo Chile", "Crosstown Traffic", "Electric Ladyland", "Little Miss Strange", "Moon Turn The Tides", "Still Raining Still Dreaming" and "All Along The Watchtower".
(Brown label, red R pressing. Cover has ring & edge wear, with some staining, wrinkling, and a bit of peeling along the bottom and opening.)

Jackie & Roy — Jackie & Roy (Storyville) ... LP
Storyville, 1955. Very Good .... $11.99
One of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover".
(Red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear, with split seams held together by clear tape.)

John Lewis — John Lewis Piano ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Good .... $5.99
One of the strongest sessions recorded by pianist John Lewis in the 50s – a date that shows depths of his talents that run even greater than his work with the Modern Jazz Quartet, quite possibly because is work on piano is at the forefront of the record throughout! There's a sense of darkness here that really fits the image on the cover – a style that's stated clearly on piano lines that are often as spacious as they are gentle, but which also have a moodier undercurrent below, thanks to Lewis' careful choice of keys and notes. The backing is often quite spare – Lewis sometimes plays just with Connie Kay's drums, or the guitar of either Jim Hall or Barry Galbraith – and at its fullest, the record features 2 trio numbers with the bass of Percy Heath and drums of Connie Kay. Tracks are lyrically and thoughtfully composed – and titles include "Two Lyric Pieces", "Harlequin", "D&E", "Little Girl Blue", and "Warmeland".
(Heavy Spanish pressing on Belter. Cover has some wear, a split bottom seam with some tape, staining along the bottom, a partially unglued top seam with a rip, and a bit of pen on the back.)

Oscar Lindsay — Sophisticated Sounds Of Oscar Lindsay ... LP
AMR, Early 60s. Very Good- .... $2.99
A beautiful groover from Chicago singer Oscar Lindsay – a deep-voiced vocalist who's clearly inspired by Billy Eckstine, but who also opens up here in a hipper small combo mode! Oscar's vocals are great – rich, but never sleepy – and with enough range to rate the "sophisticated" in the title, but enough soul to swing out when needed. The album's especially noteworthy because it boasts some great arrangements from Floyd Morris – who plays organ on the record in a combo that also includes Joe Diorio on guitar and John Young on piano. Titles include "My Shining Hour", "Lonely One", "You", "But Not For Me", "In The Wee Small Hours", and "Sing Hallelujah".

Mighty Hannibal — Hannibalism ... CD
Norton, 1960s. New Copy .... $12.99
An excellent collection of work by Mighty Hannibal – aka King Hannibal, aka Hannibal – a great soul singer from the sock-boogaloo late 60s years! At his prime, Hannibal recorded some excellent singles that have a finger-popping funky feel – very tight combo instrumentation mixed with raspy vocals that have more than a bit of a southern touch at the bottom. This set brings together much of his best work, complete with excellent self-penned liner notes on his rocky career, with great details that get at the heart of the life of an indie soul singer back in the day. Titles include "Get Back", "Fishin Pole", "Hymn No 5", "Jerkin The Dog", "Good Time", "Get In The Groove", "Get Back", "Shame Shame", "Trying To Make It Through", and "The Truth Shall Make You Free".

Jack Montrose — Blues & Vanilla ... LP
RCA, 1956. Very Good- .... $11.99
A standout session from Jack Montrose – one of the most overlooked players on the west coast scene of the 50s! Montrose's tenor work is always a treat, but here, he's playing in an unusual setting that includes Red Norvo on vibes, Joe Maini on alto sax, and Jim Hall on guitar – all working with Jack on a set of tunes that have the tight arrangements of his work on Atlantic and Pacific Jazz – yet which also open up with some interesting instrumental twists that break the mold a bit! Side one of the set features the 18 minute tune "Concertino Do Camera" – a nicely extended track that offers plenty of room for solo work – and the other shorter tracks still offer up strong solos too – on titles that include "Bernie's Tune", "A Dandy Line", "Bockhanal", and "For The Fairest".
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a mostly split bottom seam, some aging, and staining along part of the bottom.)

new Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces — Searching For My Love ... LP
Checker, Mid 60s. Very Good- .... $19.99
A wonderful album of southern soul – and the only full-length LP cut by Bobby Moore and his long-lived Rhythm Aces combo! The group's the sort that slaved away endlessly in live shows all over the south – playing on their own, or providing extra backup for countless big stars touring through the area. Bobby's on tenor, and the group has some incredibly rich vocal talents – unnamed, but with a group harmony style that's equally at home with sweet ballads or hard stompin party numbers. The latter style is the band's strongest suit, though – with an approach that's somewhere between the hard soul of Sam & Dave and the party grooves of Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts – and like that group, Moore's style was probably forged out of years of playing at beach dances, frat parties, and bar gigs, the real proving ground for a tight combo like this! A great little LP, with a fresh sound throughout – and tracks include "The Hamburger Song", "Follow Me", "Searching For My Love", "Hey, Mr. DJ", "Searching For My Love", "Jenny, Jenny", "Come Back Baby", and "We've Got That". Recorded at Fame in 1966 with Rick Hall, too!

new Sun Ra — Angels & Demons At Play ... LP
Saturn, Mid 50s/1967. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A killer early session from Sun Ra! Ra plays organ and electric piano, and the band includes Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Marshall Allen, Ronnie Boykins, Art Hoyle, Phil Cohran, and Julian Priester. The group's also got an electric bass, which gives the tracks a nice bottom, and a good spooky feel. Sun Ra — Art Forms Of Dimensions Tomorrow (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Saturn, 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A fantastic Sun Ra album – with otherworldly sounds that perfectly sum up his unique jazz vision! The album features material recorded in New York in 1961, and released on Saturn in 1965 – but whatever the date, it's still light years ahead of its time! Ra plays piano, as usual, but he also works with some beautiful instruments of his own creation – including the strangely wonderful Sun Harp, the Dragon Drum, and the Spiral Percussion Gong. The percussion instruments are heard to great effect on the track "Solar Drums" – which has an echoey percussive sound that's really wonderful! The rest of the group includes John Gilmore, Ronnie Boykins, Pat Patrick, Clifford Thornton, Marshall Allen, and Clifford Jarvis – classic Ra players all of them – and other titles include "Lights On A Satellite", "Kosmos In Blue", and "Cluster Of Galaxies".

Sun Ra — Continuation ... LP
Saturn, 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival".

Saturn, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
Sun Ra's really moving forward with this classic set – refining the sound of his Chicago-based Arkestra, and reaching for new territory that moves him way past familiar jazz modes! The rare Space Probe sent out to the cosmos by Sun Ra in the mid 70s – with material recorded from the early 60s onward – the heart of it being Sun Ra's first ever recordings on a moog synthesizer in 1969, and it's one heck of a trip! This excellent edition on Art Yard includes the material from the original Saturn release – the epic, nearly 18 minute interstellar trip that is the title track – with Sun Ra crafting hallucinatory moog magic throughout it. He shifts gears on "Earth Primitive Earth" (the complete version), an earlier recording, as much influenced by ancient sounds as futuristic ones, with hand drums for the beat and bass clarinet by John Gilmore. The closing "Conversion Of JP" is the other holdover from the earlier Space Probe LP and it's another gem steeped in primitivism, believed to feature Marshall Allen on flute (sure sounds like him to us). Art Yard includes some really incredible unissued material here from sessions that produced the Secrets Of The Sun and When Sun Comes Out sets – titles including "Solar Symbols II", "Dance Of The Wind", "Recollections Of There" and "Destiny". Other players include James Jacson on log drums, Nimrod Hunt on hand drums and vocalist Thea Barbara.

new Sun Ra — Sun Ra Featuring Pharoah Sanders & Black Harold ... CD
ESP, 1964. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99
Landmark work from Sun Ra – a rare 1964 performance that features some very early work from Pharoah Sanders, a good deal of which is appearing here for the first time ever! The material was recorded at Judson Hall, and only half the tracks came out on a rare Saturn LP – making this CD collection that first time that all 11 titles appear in their entirety. Ra and the group recorded the set on New Year's Eve, 1964 – at a time when John Gilmore had left the Arkestra to work with Art Blakey – leaving Pharoah Sanders to come and take his place on tenor. Also noteworthy is the presence of Black Harold (Harold Murray) on flute – blowing with a dark edge alongside other group members who include Al Evans on trumpet, Teddy Nance on trombone, Marshal Allen on alto sax, Pat Patrick on baritone sax, and both Alan Silva and Ronnie Boykins on bass. The performance starts with a relatively fierce sound, but then moves into some beautifully lyrical moments – and titles include "Gods On A Safari", "The New Tomorrow", "The Second Stop Is Jupiter", "Cosmic Interpretation", "The Other World", "Dawn Over Israel", and "Space Mates".

Wendy Rene — After Laughter Comes Tears – The Complete Stax & Volt Singles & Rarities 1964 to 1965 ... CD
Stax/Light In The Attic, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $12.99
Massive soul from Wendy Rene – one of the lesser-known talents from the Stax Records scene of the 60s, and an artist who's finally getting her due! We're not sure why Wendy never hit bigger at the time – because her singles here are wonderful – excellent female soul that not only ranks with the best of the Stax sound of the time, but which also challenges the bite of some of the best Motown music too – thanks to a particularly northern groove on some of the best cuts here! In fact, it may well be this style – often closer to Detroit soul than the usual Memphis bag at Stax – that might have held Wendy back. But that's hardly an issue all these many years later – and our hat's off to the folks at Light In The Attic for not only bringing together her rare singles, but also collecting unreleased songs, other rarities, and even material performed with the group The Drapels – all recorded in the years 1964 and 1965, and supported by some great notes too. Titles include "Bar B Q", "I Wish I Were That Girl", "What Will Tomorrow Bring", "Last Love", "Crowded Park", "Give You What I Got", "Deep In My Heart", "Wondering", "First Kiss", "Reap What You Sow", "After Laughter Comes Tears", and "He Hasn't Failed Me Yet".

Howard Roberts — Something's Cookin' ... LP
Capitol, 1964. Very Good .... $5.99
Very groovy! The record's a hip batch of jazzy tracks played by the great Howard Roberts, caught here at the height of his 60s groovy bossa style, and playing with his regular combo plus backing by a larger group of horns. Jack Marshall and Shorty Rogers helped Howard with the arrangements, and the record has that groovy LA jazz sound that graced the best of the Capitol sides of the time. Charles Kynard gets in some nice organ, Howard plays a nicely-toned Epiphone, and titles include "Bluesette", "The Lonesome Cowboy", "Charade", "Maniac", and "Recado Bossa Nova".

Roctober, 2005. New Copy .... $2.99
Roctober strikes again with another fantastic issue of music wisdom and knowledge from the far side of the spectrum! This time around, the spotlight's on Zory Zenith & Zolar X – who are covered in unusual detail – but our Dusty Groove ears are most tuned to the articles on Archie Bell, Kraftwerk, and Bernie Worrell. Yet as usual, we find our eyes straying all over the issue – captivated by features on oddball artists we'd never heard before, and drawn in by the always-great reviews, comics, and smaller bits in the magazine! Other features include It's The Law, Hall Of Dynamic Greatness, Gaybot, Nardwuar Vs Tommy Chong, and Willie Restum.

Satintones — Satintones Sing! – The Complete Tamla & Motown Singles (limited edition) ... CD
Tamla/Motown/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy .... $19.99
The complete Tamla and Motown singles of The Satintones – the soul, R&B & popular music juggernaut's first male vocal group – and a treasure trove of rare post doo wop from the end of the 50s/beginning of the 60s! It's fascinating for the history herein – the group is hugely under-anthologized in a world of myriad Motown compilations – which is a real shame, as you'll hear in this sweet set – with numbers that rely on the doo wop influences as well as tunes more devoted to lead vocals – with a slew of early Berry Gordy productions and compositions. The set includes the then legally challenged Shirelles knockoff/answer song "Tomorrow and Always" plus "Motor City", "Going To The Hop", "Sugar Daddy", "A Love That Can Never Be", "Foot Stomping Time", My Kind Of Love", "Boogie Woogie Heart", "Because I Love You", "You Can't Beat My Lovin" and many more. 26 tracks in all.

new Candi Staton — Best Of Candi Staton ... CD
Warner, 1970s. Used .... $9.99
An interesting set of tracks that traces the roots of Candi Staton from a rough southern soul singer into a sophisticated diva whose transformation marked a similar path that was taken by many other artists from her generation. The 14 track compilation pulls together titles from Candi's albums on Warner during the years 1974 to 1980 – and it really runs through a number of different styles. Before her Warner recordings, Candi worked with Rick Hall at Muscle Shoals in a classic 60 southern mode. Rick handled her first few recordings for Warner in pretty much the style of earlier years, but Candi's real fame came with the track "Young Hearts Run Free", a perennial dancefloor and AM standard that was produced with a much slicker sound by Dave Crawford. The move proved to be a good one for Candi, and as you'll hear on this CD, she actually ended up doing some great work with more uptempo and modern soul tunes than on the stock southern tunes of earlier days. Titles include "Halfway To Heaven", "Here I Am Again", "He's Making Love To You", "When You Wake Up Tomorrow", "I Ain't Got Nowhere To Go", "Six Nights & A Day", and of course, "Young Hearts Run Free".

Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators — Feeling Free (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Timmion (Finland), 2005. New Copy .... $4.99
A really righteous little number from Nicole Willis – one that comes across with the funky sophistication of the best work on early 70s Curtom Records! Funky grooves from The Soul Investigators mix with a nice bit of strings on the track – elevating the tune from straight deep funk mode into something far hipper – and showing us that Nicole's got all the vocal chops to meet the challenge! A really wonderful number that would have been one of our favorite tracks of the 70s, had it been issued so many years ago!

Adventure Music, 2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3CD .... $16.99 19.99
A loving look at the Adventure Music label – served up in a 3CD set that offers a heck of a lot of great music for a very low price, all hand-picked by the lovely Monday Michiru! Adventure's been one of the best sources for Brazilian music and acoustic sounds for the past decade – a label with a really strong dedication to a few sorts of styles – like some of the best mixes of jazz, bossa, and choro modes recorded in Brazil – or the wonderful post-folk acoustic underground that's risen up in the US. The package really spans the full scope of the label's music – and offers up a whopping 44 tracks in all – all to introduce you to their efforts. Our hat's off to Monday for the track selection – and the package features work by Hamilton De Holanda, Ricardo Silveira, Daniel Santiago, Muiza Adnet, Mike Marshall, Jovino Santos Neto, Moacir Santos, Antonio Arnedo, Maria Marquez, Clarice Assad, Tom Lellis, Eva Scow, Gui Mallon, Toninho Horta, Florencia Ruiz, Alex Hargreaves, Philippe Baden Powell, and others!

Various — Fat & Funky – 45 Kings Part 3 ... LP
Fat City (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP .... $16.99
The deepest set so far in this excellent series – a package that goes way beyond the gritty sound of most funky 45 collections, and brings in a wealth of obscure soundtrack, folk funk, and European grooves! The style here is almost more soul-based than funk-based at times – going for tunes that have strong hooks, good structure, and a really coherent sound that's not just the result of an accidental strong drum break or short burst of skittish guitar. Most numbers are vocal ones too – coming from surprising sources that aren't the usual 70s soul territory for crate diggers – but alongside the vocals are always great instrumental passages as well, with more than enough funk at the bottom to warrant inclusion in the 45 Kings series! Titles include "If I Could" by Enrica, "Romantic Attitude" by John Fitch, "Wanderin Soul" by Gary Atkinson, "Lay It On Me Baby" by Mike Harper, "Crescent Boogie" by Soul On Delivery, "Some Kind Of Fever" by Maxine Sellers, "Be That Way" by Jimmy Gray Hall, "All I Dream" by Estelle Levitt, "Starin At The Wall" by Lilly, "Lookin Back" by Rainbow Crunch, and "Frantique" by Nino Nardini.

Various — Fire In My Bones – Raw & Rare & Other-Worldly African-American Gospel 1944-2007 (3CD set) ... CD
Tompkins Square, Mid 40s/1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 3CD .... $23.99 25.98
Gloriously soulful and passionate postwar gospel – one of the best ever compilations on the Tompkins Square label – shining a powerful light on rare African American church recordings, street corner sermon style numbers, choir backed testifying soul & blues, and straight up wonderful spiritual soul music all the way! The tunes range from the mid-to-late 1940s through the 1970s for the most part, with a few later recordings – and part of what's so inspiring about it is the disregard of formality to the program. It has crackly field recordings of congregations, reverends and choirs, back porch gospel blues, and more polished, but no less passionate recordings – the common thread being the raw, honest devotion and deeply felt soulfulness of it. Hats off to producer, compiler Mike McGonigal for putting together such an excellent set, and for his concise, but well done notes on each track, and to Tompkins Square for continuing to raise the bar! 80 tracks on 3 discs: "Peace In The Valley" by Rev Lonnie Farris, "Rock And Roll Sermon" by Elder Beck, "So Glad" by Rev Robert Ballinger, "Wasn't That A Mystery" by Madison County Senior Center Singers, "The Wicked Shall Cease From Troubling" by Nathaniel Rivers, "Jesus' Blood" by Golden Stars Of Greenwood, SC, "God's Mighty Hand" by Rev Utah Smith, "Fire Shed In My Bones" by Boyd Rivers, "Power Is In The Heart OF Man" by Brother & Sister W B Grate, "You Ought To Been There" by The BC Harmonizers, "Go Devil Go" by Madam Ira May Littlejohn and more.

Various — Real Sound Of Chicago – Underground Disco From The Windy City ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99 17.99
The kind of record that makes us mighty proud to live in the Windy City – and a long-overdue look at the wealth of rare club, disco, and soul cuts bubbling in the Chicago underground at the end of the 70s! During the early part of the decade, the city was widely known for some super-huge soul acts – and in the 80s, house would raise Chicago to international fame – but in the space between, the city kept on putting out some really wonderful music – wicked little cuts issued on small indie labels, most of which never got any circulation outside the midwest! The Mr Peabody crate-digging team's collected together the best of the best from these overlooked years – and also threw in a few of their own edits too – furthering the dancefloor potential of some of the best rare nuggets. Titles include "Your Love Is In The Pocket" by Premonition, "Love So New" by Loveship, "A Challenge" by Billy Hinton, "BT" by Yohon, "Attitude Believe & Determination" by Martin L Dumas, "School Days (Mr Peabody's edit)" by Ghalib Ghallab, "Look Let's Make Love" by Sidney Thomas, "Don't Touch It" by Maxx Traxx, "Hooked On Your Love" by On Stage, "Promise (inst)" by Larry Houston, "Runnin To A Disco (Mr Peabody's edit)" by Lonnie Givens, "Funky Preacher (Mr Peabody's edit)" by Cold T, "We Fall In Love" by Cheryl Berdell, "The Composer (Mr Peabody's edit)" by Fantasie, "Disco Ball" by Brighter Side Of Darkness, "Can You Feel It" by Synergy, "What Good Is Music" by The Esquires, "Open Soul" by Tomorrow's People, "Road To Sunshine" by Expo, and "Happy Baby" by Gregory James.

Various — Top Deck Presents Ska Vocalists – 40 Crucial Vocal Classics ... CD
Universal (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $12.99
The birth of ska – served up in a host of hard-edged classics from the early years – great Jamaican tracks that sound a lot more like soul music than most later incarnations of the genre – no surprise, given that many of these cuts were crafted from the strong influence of American radio on the Kingston airwaves! The rhythms are definitely what you'd call ska, but the vocals often have a deeper approach than we're used to in later work of the genre – heavily tilted towards the soul and R&B side of the spectrum, especially when more than one singer is featured on a track – and often mixed with razor-sharp instrumentation that packs the punch of a vintage funky 45! Titles include "Valley Of Green" and "Take Your Time" by Jackie Opel, "Men Alone" by The Deacons, "Lonely & Blue Boy" by Ferdie Nelson, "Sweet Dreams" by Bibby & The Astronauts, "Snake In The Grass" by Larry Marshall, "Ten Virgins" by The Angelic Brothers, "Everyday" by The Avalons, "My Darling Josephine" by Joe G Henry, "Dream For Tomorrow" by Al & The Vibrators, "Fresh Out Of Love" and "Someone" by The Jetts, and "Never Too Young To Learn" by Andy & The Avalons. 40 tracks in all!

Various — Turn Me Loose – Outsiders Of Old Time Music ... LP
Tompkins Square, Late 20s. New Copy .... $15.99 17.99
A great little set that really lives up to the promise of its title – and it's claim to offer up "commercial recordings of Anglo-European American vernacular music that challenges the stereotypes"! The set's a wealth of obscure 78rpm recordings that really defy genre convention – and which show that the 20s was easily one of the most experimental times in American music – a point when later common styles were really quite new, and still very fluid – bits of later blues, folk, or country intermingling equally – often from sources that you wouldn't expect a decade or two later. These tracks are all acoustic, but feature really inventive instrumentation – especially when modes of a generation or two before are pushed into new phrasings with decidedly (then) modern flavors. As usual with these Tompkins Square reissues, the sound quality is great – and the package offers up some good notes to help situate the music too. Titles include "Caliope" by Lewis Brothers, "Bacon & Cabbage" by Blind Joe Mangrum & Fred Shriver, "Don't Get One Woman On Your Mind" by Willard Hodgin, "The Whale Did I Know He Did" by Mustard & Gravy, "Ladies Quadrille" by The Happy Hayseeds, "Dill Pickles Rag" by McLaughlin's Old Time Melody Makers, and "Down In Tennessee Blues" by Homer Davenport.

new Various — Under The Influence – A Collection Of Rare Soul & Disco ... CD
Z Records (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 19.99
Massive – and more rare club singles than we might have hoped for in a single package! The set's proof that there's still plenty to dig for in the 12" scene of the late 70s and early 80s – as it features a huge amount of rare grooves we've never heard before – most of them perfectly balanced between boogie, disco, and funky soul modes – and often produced with the sort of raw touches that we'd usually find on the P&P family of labels! There's definitely an east coast vibe running strong in the set – but the collection also features nice contributions from points west, too – including a few especially nice club tracks from the Detroit scene that have been lost to the shifting sands of time for years. The notes feature some surprising details on each number – proving that compiler DJ Red Greg really knows his stuff – and about half of the cuts are presented in sensitive edits that do great things to expand the groove, while still respecting the structure of the original tune. Titles include "Love Explosion" by Donnell Pitman, "Music Madness" by Beckie Bell, "Get On Up" by Free Spirit, "Search For Tomorrow" by Chain Reaction, "Love Me For Real" by Rim & Kasa, "You Don't Want My Love" by KIC, "Fear" by Arthur King, "Right Size" by Miss Misty, "So Much To Talk About" by New Love Ltd & Interstate 95, "Crazy" by Carl Marshall & The SDs, "Booty Shaker" by Star Quad, "Rainbows" by Del Richardson, "Can You Dig It" by Lafayette Street, "Why Do I Love You" by Andy Crown, and "Feeling Freeky" by The Vandales.

Milt Jackson — Invitation/Big Bags ... CD
1962. New Copy .... Around October 1, 2012 (delayed)
A very nice little Milt Jackson album – cut in the mode of some of his excellent soul jazz group sides from the mid 60s. This set pushes Milt past the format of much of his other work – especially that of the MJQ – as it features him in a very soulful sextet, working with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Jimmy Heath on tenor, Ron Carter on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. The presence of Dorham and Heath give the album a light lyrical swing that really opens things up – and there's a fair bit of modally-oriented tunes on the set that hint at the more soulful playing of most of the players in the 70s. Tracks include a great version of "Invitation", plus "The Sealer", "Poom A Loom", "Ruby", and "None Shall Wander".

This really does not seem like the work of a man who's as wedded to celebrity as he was during its making! Columbia, Late 50s. New Copy (reissue).... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock

Blacksmith, 2003. Used .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 De La Soul tracks, produced by Jay Dee! "Shoomp" has a blunt synth blip feel, with Jay Dee making nice use of a Tom Tom Club beat. It all plays along very well with guest Sean Paul's dancehall calling. "Much More" has a soft and soulful guest spot by Yummie, and the track recalls the "Baby Phat" single quite a bit. Two nice ones from De La – showing that they still have some skills to share, and that they're still going strong despite some highs and lows since the Stakes Is High days.

Wonderful early work by Stan – originally recorded for the Roost label, then compiled here for the Jazztone LP series. The sides are by Getz's quartet or quintet, the groundbreaking assemblage that featured Jimmy Raney on guitar, whose icy clear tone was a perfect counterpart for Getz's sweet breathy work on the tenor. The quality of the material is really great – and other sidemen are also first rate, including Horace Silver, Al Haig, Tommy Potter, Roy Haynes and Walt Bolden. 12 tracks in all, including "Yvette", "Wildwood", "Melody Express", "Penny", "Potter's Luck", "Split Kick", "Rubberneck", "Mosuito Knees", "Sweetie Pie", "Hershey Bar", "Tootsie Roll", and "For Stompers Only"

new Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto — Getz/Gilberto #2 ... LP
Verve, 1964. Used Gatefold .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato".

Beautiful late Blue Note work from Bobby Hutcherson – laidback, warm, electric, and with a mixture of CTI funk and some of the more lyrical soul jazz work of his years with Harold Land! Part of the credit for the set should go to George Cables – who plays both acoustic and electric keys on the record, and who gives the album a sweetly dancing feel that really warms things up wonderfully – and all other players are wonderful too, including drummer Eddie Marshall, bassist James Leary, and horn players Freddie Hubbard, Hadley Caliman, and Manny Boyd. Includes a great remake of "Little B's Poem", the mellow groover "Why Not", and the cuts "Til Then", "Knucklebean", and "So Far So Good".

An amazing double-header – and a set that really adds a lot more music than we might have expected! First up is a richly expanded version of Cleopatra Jones – one of the best of the blacksploitation scores of the early 70s – a masterpiece of music that we rate every bit as high as Shaft or Superfly – maybe even higher! The music here is incredible – a surprising funky turn for JJ Johnson, who most folks know for his straighter jazz work – and like Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and others who were surprising the world with their ability to score music for a full film during the early 70s, JJ really knocks it out of the park with this one – coming up with a batch of tunes that are a wonderful mix of sophisticated scoring, creative instrumentation, and some damn funky grooves! The title cut features Joe Simon on vocals, and Millie Jackson sings on the cuts "Love Doctor" and "It Hurts So Good". The rest of the set is instrumental, and other cuts include an instrumental take on "Cleopatra Jones", plus "Go Chase Cleo", "Goin To The Chase", "Wrap Up", and "Airport Fight". This new version features 17 bonus tracks from the original film score, not the record – amazing extra music by Carl Brandt, with titles that include "Emdee", "Elevator/Cleo & Captain", "Pot Burn/Mommy/Police Raid", "Ambush", "Doodle Apartment", "Before Crash", and "Snake Crib". CD 2 features some long-lost music from the film Cleopatra Jones & The Casino Of Gold – a well-known follow-up to the original movie, but one that was never properly represented on record – making this CD set a long-awaited premiere of the original music for the film! The set features music by Dominic Frontiere – penned in a mix of funky action modes, with some slight exotic touches too, due to the location of the story. Frontiere's in his best soul/funk mode – a side that few folks realize he can do this well – and the music has a slightly different feel than JJ Johnson's Cleo Jones work, but is equally nice. Titles include "Casino Source", "Chopped Meat", "Oymia", "Les Orgie", "Fatman Stomp", "Dead Dragon Lady", and "Pool Hall Rock" – plus the vocal number "Playing With Fire". CD also features 4 more bonus tracks from Cleopatra Jones – including extended versions of the theme, and Pattie Brooks singing "Swing Down Chariot" and "Am I Blue". Great notes too – very full, with lots of photos, in the best Film Score tradition!

new Quincy Jones — Quincy Jones Plays Hip Hits/Golden Boy ... CD
Mercury, 1963/1964. New Copy .... $13.99 18.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic Quincy Jones from the 60s – a pair of records that really show why his jazz skills were unlike anyone else! Quincy Jones Plays Hip Hits is a very groovy record that was done with a feel that's somewhere in between his Big Band Bossa album and his best 60s soundtrack work! The format is simple – Quincy picks a sweet batch of jazz semi-hits from the early 60s, plays them with a nice mix of soul jazz arrangements, and works with a great ensemble filled with wonderful players – including Roland Kirk, Budd Johnson, Seldon Powell, James Moody, and Jerome Richardson on reeds; Lalo Schifrin and Patti Brown on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Clark Terry on trumpet, and Melba Liston on trombone – plus lots of great percussion at the bottom, helping bring some Latin energy to the grooves at points. Tunes are familiar, but all given a great Quincy Jones twist – and titles include "Gravy Waltz", "Jive Samba", "Walk On The Wild Side", "Bossa Nova USA", and "Watermelon Man". Golden Boy is a sweet bridge between Quincy's big band recordings and his groovier soundtrack work of the mid 60s – as the record combines straight jazzy grooving with some of the cooler elements of Quincy's soundtrack scores, like stepping strings, wordless voices, and a breathy mellow groove that floats across the disc in a wonderful way! Aiding Quincy in the album are a host of top-line jazz players – including Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Jerome Richardson, and Phil Woods on saxes – plus Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, and Jim Hall on guitar! Although titled after the show Golden Boy, only a few cuts here are from that musical – and the rest include Quincy Jones originals and some cool covers, given the Q twist. Titles include "Seaweed", "The Witching Hour", "Hard Day's Night", "The Sidewinder", and "Theme From Golden Boy", done in 2 versions, both great!

new Mighty Clouds Of Joy — Truth Is The Power ... LP
ABC, 1977. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Truth is the power, but the power is also in the groove – and on this tight little classic, The Mighty Clouds Of Joy soar brilliantly into a space between gospel and soul! The record's easily one of the best efforts to bridge the two genres in the 70s – a record that probably even tops Rance Allen's best work, and which sparkles with a similar crackling "real soul" vocal amidst the tighter grooves of the backing. Frank Wilson produced, and the album bears all the hallmarks of his best 70s work, especially that for ABC. Titles include "There's Love In The World", "That's What Friends Are Made Of", "I'll Keep A Light In My Window", "Like A Child", "Listen People", and "The Truth Will Set You Free".
(Cover has some light staining along the bottom seam and a cut corner.)

new Parish HallParish Hall ... CD
Fantasy/Pilot (UK), 1970. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pastoral name, but a really hard-hitting band – a power rock trio who come on with a sound that's incredibly full for such a small group! Most numbers here have some really heady bass work – rumbling at the bottom and giving a fuzzier, nastier edge to some of the tunes – and other instrumentation includes heavy drums, piano, and guitar – all used tightly, and with the sort of energy that was much more common for mainstream groups of the time, particularly in a post-Cream generation. Vocals by Gary Wagner are slightly soulful at times – a nice Bay Area sort of earnestness that really adds another layer to the record. Titles include "Dynaflow", "My Eyes Are Getting Heavy", "Silver Ghost", "Lucanna", "Skid Row Runner", "How Can You Win", "Take Me With You When You Go", and "Ain't Feelin Too Bad".

new Oscar Peterson — Soul Espanol ... LP
Limelight, 1966. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
About as close as you'll get to soul jazz with Oscar Peterson – and a very groovy set recorded with some good Latiny influences in the playing, and kind of a pop soul style in the arrangements! The core trio of Peterson on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums (a very soulful group already) is augmented by added timbales by Marshall Thompson and conga by Master Henry Gibson – great extra percussion that really makes the whole thing groove nicely! The album was recorded in Chicago, and has a sound that's very much in the best Cadet Records style of the time – filled with soulful groovers that include "Mas Que Nada", "Samba Sensitive", "Amanha", "Soulville Samba", "Samba De Orfeu", and "Call Me".
(Cover has edge wear, with staining and waviness along the bottom.)

new Sun Ra — Nidhamu/Dark Myth Equation Visitation ... CD
Saturn/Art Yard (UK), 1971. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sun Ra returns to the motherland – to serve up a host of classic recordings done in Egypt in the early 70s! There's a cool exotic feel to some of the best tracks here – a vibe that's quite similar to the groove Salah Ragab was hitting at the time in Cairo, although probably a bit more outside overall – thanks to the Arkestra's strongly modern tones. Recordings were done at a few locations – and the set mixes live concert material with even more intimate sides done at the home of Hartmut Geerken, who was a key force in getting the Arkestra to play in Egypt at the time. Ra plays a host of great keyboards – including rocksichord, tiger organ, and moog – and other players include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on flute and alto, Danny Thompson on baritone and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Hakim Rahim on alto and flute, and the trio of Tommy Hunter, Clifford Jarvis, and Lex Humphries on drums. Occasional vocals are sung by June Tyson, Verta Grosvenor, Gloristeena Knight, and Richard Wilkinson – and the set features a whopping 11 tracks, orignally issued on two different Saturn albums, with bonus material too. Titles include "Space Loneliness #2", "Discipline #11", "Nidhamu", "Solar Ship Voyage", "Discipline #27", "Cosmo Darkness", "The Light Thereof", "Friendly Galaxy #2", "To Nature's God", and "Why Go To The Moon?"

new Mavis Staples/Curtis Mayfield — Piece Of The Action ... LP
Curtom, 1977. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the last great 70s soundtracks on Curtom Records – a smoking little set that pairs the music of Curtis Mayfield with the vocals of Mavis Staples! Curtis is very much in charge of the record from the start, and works in a hard-stepping and righteous mode that recalls his earlier work on the Staples' soundtrack for Let's Do It Again – no surprise, given that Piece Of The Action was the next installment in the successful series of films that starred Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier! The sound here is nicely full, hitting that rich mid 70s Curtom mode that sounded so great on Leroy Hutson and Natural Four albums of the time – a slightly more sophisticated approach that mixed in a bit of strings with the heavier funk at the bottom. Titles include "Chocolate City", written by Curtis with Keni Burke and Henry Gibson, plus "Getting Deeper", "A Piece Of The Action", "Orientation", and "Of Whom Shall I Be Afraid".

The first album that the Sweet Inspirations cut for Atlantic – and a gospel album that's billed under the name of Cissy Drinkard & The Sweet Inspirations, before Cissy had come to more widely use the name "Houston" as her last name. The style of the material is similar to the group's secular albums on Atlantic – and to the vocal backings they provided for Aretha Franklin – with a sweet, pure, southern soul style that's just great, produced by Tom Down with the same style he was using with Aretha. Titles include "What A Friend", "I Shall Know Him", "He'll Fight", "Without A Doubt", and "Looking On The Bright Side".

new Various — Turn Me Loose – Outsiders Of Old Time Music ... CD
Tompkins Square, Late 20s. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "Caliope" by Lewis Brothers, "Bacon & Cabbage" by Blind Joe Mangrum & Fred Shriver, "Don't Get One Woman On Your Mind" by Willard Hodgin, "The Whale Did I Know He Did" by Mustard & Gravy, "Ladies Quadrille" by The Happy Hayseeds, "Dill Pickles Rag" by McLaughlin's Old Time Melody Makers, and "Down In Tennessee Blues" by Homer Davenport.

new Nat BirchallSacred Dimension ... LP
Sound Soul & Spirit (UK), 2011. New Copy Gatefold .... $29.99 Out Of Stock
Birchall wrote all tracks – and titles include "Ancient World", "Dance Of The Mystic", "Radiant Will", "Peace In Ninevah", and "Sacred Dimension".

new Peter Brown — Back To The Front (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/FTG, 1982. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99 Out Of Stock
Surprisingly nice work from Peter Brown – a groover who still managed to hit on all burners after his early years at TK Records! Brown's definitely got a crossover feel here – clubby rhythms, but topped with vocals that belie his look on the front – and which, along with the catchy grooves, should have done more than enough to get Peter some wider play with early 80s audiences. Yet there's also some key dancefloor craft here – no-nonsense approach to the bottom of the tunes, and never too much cloying production up top – which serves to keep things nice and lean, and plenty clean too. Titles include "Give Me Up", "Heaven In Your Eyes", "Shall We Dance", "Danger", "The Love Game", "Satisfaction Guaranteed", and "Baby Gets High". CD features bonus tracks – "Baby Gets High (7" mix)", "Baby Gets High (12" mix)", "Overnight Sensation (12" mix)", and "Overnight Sensation (inst)".

new Eddie Higgins Trio — Soulero ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
Groovy session of piano trio material, recorded in Chicago by the city's "great white hope" of the 60s: pianist Eddie Higgins. The set was recorded for the Dunwich production group (who gave the world The Shadows of Knight), but was licensed to Atlantic for final release. The group's a very tight trio, with Higgins backed by Richard Evans on bass and Marshall Thompson on drums – and the resulting sound is nice and soulful, in the same tradition of Chicago piano recordings by Ramsey Lewis and Ray Bryant. Titles include "Soulero", "Tango Africaine", "Mr. Evans", and "Shelly's World".

Inner City, 1976. New Copy 2CD .... $10.99 16.95 Out Of Stock
One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved. The set's a double-length one, and features players who include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, and James Jackson on Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum – which is always a treat. Ra plays solar organ and moog, as well as piano – and titles include "Of The Other Tomorrow", "On Sound Infinity Spheres", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "Gods Of The Thunder Realm", "Gods Of A Thunder Realm", "The House Of Eternal Being", and "Lights On a Satellite".

Diverse beatcraft from a pioneer of beathead culture – the never predictable, still vital DJ Vadim! new Santucci Scoppa — Toward The Peace ... CD
Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A killer set from Italian jazz gurus Cicci Santucci & Enzo Scoppa – an early 70s quartet effort that has a more fiery and overall freer sound than other Santucci Scoppa efforts of the era! This is one of those records that challenges our expectations of a combo, or in this case a pair, of artists that we've loved over the years, and their work is never predictable, but this one moves them in a more exciting and improvisational realm that works masterfully. Trumpet player Santucci and tenor sax player Scoppa work with an intuitive harmony together as always, but the vibe is far reaching a frenetic here in away that moves them away from their more hard bop rooted sounds. Many tense moments, but never far out, or compromising the fluid interplay. The quartet on this record includes a pair of Brunos – Tommaso on bass and Biriaco on drums. There's a Titles include "Colpi Di Flash", "Inumanity", "Tensione", "Toward The Peace", "Dalle Nostre Isole", "Routine", "Integration", "Liveri" and "A Free Way Of Life".

Luaka Bop, 1970s/1980s/1990. New Copy .... $18.99 19.98 Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking collection of work from the legendary Tom Ze – and a record that really helped introduce his genius to the world outside of Brazil! Although it's hard to understand from the perspective of over a decade – especially one that's seen Tom Ze rise to fame again – when this compilation was first put together, the music of Tom Ze had all but fallen off the musical map of Brazil. Ze was one of the founding fathers of Tropicalia – and unlike other members of that group, who rose to great fame during the 70s, and straightened up their act a bit – Ze always remained a committed modernist, continually inventive well into the 70s and 80s – really coming up with amazing sounds that are always compelling, challenging, and often have a nicely quirky feel as well. The style's incredibly hard to pin down – and in fact, we might describe the recordings as being "anti-style" – but if you've heard any of Ze's work, you know you're in for a treat. The collection brings together material from a number of different labels – and titles include "Ma", "Doi", "Hein?", "Cademar", "Um Oh E Um Ah", "Augusta Angelica E Consolacao", "O Riso E A Faca", "Ui", and "A Felicidade".

One of Chico's earliest albums for Pacific Jazz – a set of tightly arranged tracks with a cool chamber feel to them – featuring a lineup that includes Buddy Collette on reeds, Fred Katz on cello, Jim Hall on guitar, and Carson Smith on bass. Collette, Katz, and Hall are at the height of their powers here – a bit restricted, perhaps, but in the way that Hamilton was using to craft some of the more creative sounds of the 50s LA jazz scene – perfectly shaped and formed throughout! Just about every band member contributed a song and an arrangement to the album – and titles include "The Ghost", "Chrissie", "Jonalah", "Sleepy Slept Here", "Drums West", "The Squimp", and "Sleep".

Very groovy work from Peggy – a set of tunes tone with a nice little Latin flair! The tunes themselves are all Broadway hits of the late 50s and early 60s, but they're redone wonderfully here – so that they often bear little resemblance to the originals. Jack Marshall handled the arrangements with a swinging and jazzy sound – really throwing in some tight syncopated rhythms to make the album crackle more than most of Peggy's other work from the time.
