One of James Brown's earliest full albums for King Records – and a set that kicks off with his monstrous reworkin of the tune "Think" – originally recorded by the Five Royales, but recast here by James as the blueprint for all the funky goodness in years to come! That track really sets the scene for the record – and James follows up with some other harder, sharp-edged tunes – offset by a few more deep-burning mellower soul tracks. Other titles include "You've Got The Power", "If You Want Me", "So Long", "Baby, You're Right", "I'll Go Crazy", "Good Good Lovin", and "I Know It's True". Reissued with the great original cover, too!

The funkiest album ever recorded by Lyn Collins – one of the few sock-soul divas working with James Brown who got a chance to cut a full LP! The album's got Lyn shifting between heavy funk numbers and mellower soul cuts – really pushing things to the max with an incredibly deep take on a few older favorites, plus some killer new numbers – all produced to funky perfection by James Brown, with dead-on backing by the JBs! Includes her great version of "Think", a funky sample cut that never gets old – plus the cuts "Things Got To Get Better", "Women's Lib", and the funkiest version ever of "Fly Me To The Moon".

A rare bit of Cali soul – and a lot groovier than you'd guess from the cover! The music is rich in jazzy inflections – funky fusion used behind the lead vocals of Errol Knowles, in a blend that's quite similar to the best Bay Area funk of the time – particularly some of the grooves coming from the Fantasy Records scene! Guitars are great – played by Bill Courtial with lots of snakey, angular lines that really emphasize the groove – and other instrumentation includes keyboards and some mighty sweet percussion. Titles include "Losing You", "Love Nevermore", "Corn On The Cob/Time", "Don't You Think It's Time", "Time To Explain", and "Poem For Helen".

A fantastic single! "Don't Think That I'm A Violent Guy" is an amazing song that starts out with Garland knocking loudly at his girlfriend's door, and telling her to open it up and not be mad just because he "smacked her pretty little face". He then proceeds to argue that he's not a violent guy, and the whole thing grooves on from there. The arrangements are spectacular, and Garland's voice is beautiful throughout.

The complete early 70s sessions of Hotlegs – the group that hit the charts for brief moment thanks to the unforgettable, sparely drum-heavy, kinda Kinks-ian "Neanderthal Man" single – and later went on to shuffle the line-up a bit and reintroduce themselves as 10CC! We've heard and loved "Neanderthal Man", but it's with thanks to this stellar compilation that we're being hipped to the hook-laden, pop rock excellence their other '70-'71 recordings! Hotlegs is at its core the trio of Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme – all soon-to-be 10CC (Graham Gouldman actually plays bass on one song, too) – and the eclectic soft rock genius of that group is indeed on display here, albeit at a formative level! Witty and catchy, yet restlessly creative songs from players who were really just getting started! Titles include "Neanderthal Man", "How Many Times", "Desperate Dan", "Um Wah, Um Woh", "Fly Way", "Run Baby Run", "The Loser", "Today", "Lady Sadie", "YOu Didn't Like It Because You Didn't Think Of It", "Neanderthal Man (Alternative US Mix)" and more.

A really compelling little set from Satisfaction Unlimited – a group we only know from this one corker of a record on the Hot Wax label! The style's a bit in some of the harmony modes of the east coast scene of the time – yet like most Hot Wax/Invictus work, there's also a bit of an odd twist too – a quality that's hard to peg in words, but which is sometimes slightly trippy, other times warmly soulful – almost a Cali indie sort of vibe – with a bit of sunshine that breaks through amidst some of the darker, heavier themes of the record. There's plenty of great numbers with a catchy vibe that could have almost gotten these guys the radio play of some of the RCA groups of the time – and titles include "Time For Us", "Think of The Children", "Bright City Lights", "Let's Change The Subject", "Come On Back", and "Why".

A funky funky version of "Hurts So Bad" – one that still carries all the familiar lyric of the tune, but which begins with this totally great intro that sets up a mad groove peppered with hard piano lines and guitar! The mix of the harmony vocals and the sharp groove is mighty darn nice – especially when the production starts to make things sound trippy, too! "I Think Of You" has a trippy feel too – lots of echo on the group's vocals, and guitar tuned more like a sitar – complete with the twang!

Modern funky Latin Soul from Spanglish Fly! "Think" is a cover of the old school R&B staple best remembered for the killer James Brown version from the early 60s – masterfully remodeled here as a fresh live Latin Soul with vocals by Erica Ramos and a great mix of Latin percussion and horns. "Let My People Bugalu" on the flip is just as great, a lively boogaloo from the NYC combo.

A wonderful tribute to Dizzy Gillespie – put together by trumpeter Arturo Sandoval – who can not only claim a big influence from Diz, but a number of past musical partnerships as well! The setting is great – not the simple bop mode that you'd usually get from other Diz tributes – and instead, a rich, vivid painting in jazz – full of thoughtful tones and colors that echo the Gillespie tradition, yet flesh things out into a much more vivid portrait of his spirit and soul! There's definitely a few Latin touches in the rhythms at times, mixed with some great larger horn passages that recall some of Dizzy's work with larger orchestras – yet handled here with a complexity that's more in a 21st Century mode. Gary Burton adds some nice vibes to the record – and other players include Bob Mintzer on tenor, Joe DeFrancesco on Hammond, and Shelly Berg on piano. Titles include "And Then She Stopped", "Birk's Works Ala Mancini", "Things To Come", "Con Alma With Soul", "Fiesta Mojo", and "Algu Bueno".

The first couple of Fred Neil records for Capitol from 1966 to 1967 – the classic self-titled and the lesser remembered, but still quite strong Sessions – back-to-back and as great as ever! Fred is one of the 60s most underrated singer/songwriters – and his early Capital work is among the best places to start with his work – as it's got a rough folksy quality that's really wonderful, and very much in the spirit of Tim Hardin, with whom we'd draw the closest comparison to Neil at the time. This set kicks off with the sublime "The Dolphins" – one of those tracks that's lived far longer than his own music, and which has had the benefit of a number of more famous recordings, but which sounds no better than in Neil's own hands. Other tracks from the the self-titled album include the original version of "Everybody's Talkin" – again far superior to the later one – plus the cuts "Sweet Cocaine", "Green Rocky Road", "Everything Happens", and "Badi-Da". The Sessions album is also a treat, and has the singer/songwriter playing in a very relaxed studio vibe – with some spare backing, and edgy playing that opens up a side of him that we've rarely heard elsewhere. Supposedly, the session was largely improvised, and designed to recreate the feel of his legendary live shows. The tracks are fairly long, and include titles like "Felicity", "Please Send Me Somebody To Love", "Looks Like Rain", and "Fools Are A Long Time Coming". 17 tracks and 80 minutes of music in all on this CD from Rev-Ola!

The horn-heavy comedy rock classic from Cheech & Chong. Seriously, who doesn't have fond memories of Cheech rockin' that tutu? Featuring Alice Bowie (Cheech in drag.)

Funky stuff! The track is Lyn's famous version of "Think", sampled by Rob Base to big fame. The flipside's nice, too – and features a very dope laidback version of "Ain't No Sunshine", with Lyn's voice in fine fine form!

Late 60s issue of a fantastic Coleman Hawkins session from the late 50s – recorded with a septet that included Idrees Sulieman, Hank Jones, JJ Johnson, and Oscar Pettiford – and with an open-ended tone that veers towards the Prestige blowing session mode, but which is also tighter, and touched with traces of the modernism that Hawk had on his late solos at the time. Titles include the long tracks "Juicy Fruit" and "Sanctity" – plus "Chant", "Think Deep", and "Blue Lights".

One of Madonna's first singles – featuring some sweet Reggie Lucas production on "Think Of Me", and some clubby Jellybean touches on "Holiday"!

It's past the disco years, and Crown Heights Affair have emerged nicely – with a sweet modern soul style that's got a bit of 80s groove, and which shows a lot more soul than some of their earlier work! The band's singing in a sweet harmony style that works very well with the music – and we might be tempted to compare this one to some of the great early 80s Philly International work by The Stylistics and The Futures! Titles include "Heart Upside Down", "Somebody Tell Me What To Do", "Let Me Ride On The Wave Of Your Love", and "I Got Somethin For Ya".

It's a bit far from the early P-Funk days on the club groover "Not Yet", but "I Think I Got My Thang Together" has an excellent Bootsy-esque groove – with midtempo drums, fuzzy guitar, and some super-slick lyrics with a good hook!

Pat Williams is one of the greatest overlooked arrangers of the 60s, and this great Verve album features some beautifully nutty tracks, with a sweet mix of jazz and easy stylings! Zoot Sims solos on a few tracks here, and Dick Hyman plays Calliope. Great cuts include "Chicken Feathers" and "Mexican Breakfast". Cool, breathy, and breezy, with a great Verve sound, and the weird kind of subtly messed up 60's pop easy sound that we love around here!

The start of a beautiful relationship between the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the DIW label – a Japanese imprint who brought the group back to full prominence in the years after they stopped recording for ECM! DIW also let the group really do their own thing, too – almost moving back to some of their best 70s modes in a recording like this – nicely mixing up many different strands of musical influences, all in a very open space that leaves plenty of room for more sensitive moments. The only change might be the increasing presence of some of Lester Bowie's brassier modes – which bring a straighter groove at a few points – but the offbeat reed work of Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell more than offset those moments. Titles include "Charm #10", "Dancer", "We Bop", "Galactic Landscape", "RMR", and "Way Way Down Yonder".

A really dreamy little set from this hip Brazilian combo – a set that's got a bossa feel overall, but which also seems to draw a bit from folkloric roots too! The instrumentation is nice and warm – a great 60s blend of light percussion, acoustic guitar, and nice bits of jazzy flute and vibes – all really sparkling nicely with the group's blend of male and female vocals – sometimes singing solo, but often coming together in these harmonies that are mighty nice! There's echoes here of some of the other bossa harmony groups – like Tamba Trio or Os Cariocas – but the approach is pretty fresh, too – given all the nice little touches the group uses to make the music here their own. Titles include "Pouca Duracao", "Amor E Ilusao", "Onibus Colegial", "E Assim Foi O Nosso Amor", and "Mandrake".

A great guitar session from late 60s Brazil – bossa at its core, but with some other groovy touches too! Guitarist Heraldo Do Monte plays light acoustic, in a style that's right up there with Luiz Bonfa or Baden Powell – but the overall setting of the album also gives a nod towards some of the more advanced changes going on in Brazilian instrumental music at the time – the first inkling of some of the Blue Brazil touches from EMI/Odeon, with a deeper sophistication in some of the arrangements than just straight bossa. A few moments are straight ahead, mixed with others that have a nice degree of darkness – and titles include "Teletema", "My Cherie Amour", "Recit De Cassard", "Que Maravilha", "Casa Forte", and "Moanin".

A great bit of fusion from the start of the 70s – kind of a bridge between the late 60s "groovy" Japanese jazz, and some of the freer-thinking work to come! The group features excellent tenor from Takeru Muraoka, who plays with kind of a sharp edge that almost echoes more of the alto and soprano work of the generation – mixed with keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – who's plenty great on electric piano! Hiroshi Suzuki plays trombone, and the set's got some nice funky drums from Akira Ishikawa – who's always a treat. Overall, the set often has some of the same funky characteristics as some of the best late 60s electric jazz sets on Liberty Records in the US – on titles that include "Capricorn", "Something", "On A Sunny Day", "Some Other Night", and "Peaceful Planet".

Deep deep sounds from this hip Japanese drummer – a set that features a fusion-styled mix of keyboards and sax, but one that comes across with a gentle feel that's light years from conventional fusion! The balance is perfect throughout – kind of a spacey, soulful vibe – stretching out beautifully, yet never getting overindulgent – no jamming modes at all, and really a great ear for the space between the notes that keeps the whole thing on a open-handed level. One track goes slightly out, but in a way that balances the others nicely – and players include Tomoki Takahasi on tenor and soprano sax and Toshiyuki Daitoku on keyboards. Titles include "June Rain", "Burning Cloud", "Moki", "Racco", and "Cum Cum".

An amazing moment from the Brazilian music scene of the 70s – an album that's both extremely personal for each of the artists involved, yet also a wonderful collaboration between a host of up-and-coming talents! There's a relaxed, intimate feel to the whole thing that's mighty nice – almost an echo of the album's back cover photo, which shows the four key players posed inside a tiny water closet – and the overall approach is quite similar to the best Milton Nascimento/Minas Geraes work of the time – no surprise, as there's a fair bit of ties here to that scene too! Each of the four artists gets to sing lead at some point – stepping out on songs that are their own, yet which are also unified in sound, given shared musicians and spirit, too. Guests include Lo Borges, Nelson Angelo, Wagner Tiso, Tenorio Jr, and Nana Caymmi – who each leave their musical mark – and title sinclude "Caso Voce Queira Saber", "Belo Horror", "Manuel O Audaz", "Viva Eu", "Ponta Negra", and "Luiza".

Heavy funk from Japan's Soul Media combo – and one of the group's great 70s outings with the engimatic Sammy on vocals! Sammy's got this raw, raspy style that might owe a bit to Janis Joplin at times – but also nods strongly to the work of the American underground at others – more than able to stretch out with the fierce sounds of the group on the record, especially when they take on some trippy or more freaked-out styles! The drums are often nice and bold, and the electric instrumentation is very well integrated with a tight horn section that gives the tunes plenty of punch – and title sinclude "After Noon", "On The Grass", "Wandering Birds", "Parajika", and "Hyakunen Tattara".

Funky, fuzzy, and outta site – a really wonderful set of extended psychedelic jazz numbers from twin tenorists Takeru Muraoka and Takao Uematsu! The set's billed as a live tenor "battle" on the cover – but it's hardly the sort of record that you'd hear from American players in this mode – no bebop jams, and instead some great soul and funk-influenced lines on the horns, served up over rhythm from a trio that features electric piano, electric bass, and drums from the mighty Motohiko Hino! There's a nice degree of fuzz on the saxes at times (are they using some effects pedals?) – and the long tunes really open up with a wicked groove that feels like some lost US jazz funk album from the early 70s. Titles include "Happy Birth", "Listen Here", "Hot Sunday", and "CC Rider".

An overlooked gem from the killer soul years at Capitol Records – the only record we've ever seen from Pyrymyd, a group with grooves as angular as their name! The tunes have a mix of bassy funk and clubby rhythms – that sweet 80s groove style that nobody seemed to do better than Capitol at the time – as heard to best effect from artists like BB&Q Band or TS Monk, both labelmates who'd make a good comparison to the Pyrymyd sound! There's some tight horns on the top of the arrangements, which warms things up nicely – and lead vocals are by Van Ross "Sonny" Redding – who often gets harmony support in the background, with a bit of an Earth Wind & Fire vibe. Titles include "All I'll Ever Need", "Shake It Down", "Fly To Paradise", "I'm Yours Forever", "We've Got Love Together", and "Mr Music Man".

Exciting flute from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a wicked little set that's filled with funky numbers throughout! The backings are large, but often nice and tight – kind of a groove-ified version of the 60s approach to bigger band jazz albums based around a single soloist – a great choice here for flute man Yokota Toshiaki, whose lead lines are filled with soul, and mighty nice – almost a bit like Hubert Laws at the same time in the US! Most titles are covers – and the set includes versions of "Spinning Wheel", "Vehicle", "Travelin Band", "Little Green Bag", "Born To Be Wild", and "The Maltese Melody".

A gem of a bossa nova guitar session – light and lively, and filled with great acoustic lines from guitarist Geraldo Vespar! The tunes are all instrumental, and they feature some great larger backings too – arrangements that either bring up the rhythms nicely with a lot of percussion, or which inflect in a few jazzy horns to keep things swinging nicely! Vespar's got a great dark-tinged style – a bit like the mature sound of Baden Powell at the start of the 70s, but still with all the groove of his earlier years too – and the production is sublime, really bringing out all the best albums of this unique musical session. Titles include "Deus Brasileiro", "Negro", "Dindi", "Gente", and "Sambou Sambou".

A really unique little record – and a wonderful cross-section of the Japanese scene at the start of the 70s! The album features work by three trios – hence the title – some avant, some straight, and all if it pretty great! First up are the Yosuke Yamashita trio – who really step outside on the tracks "Dore" and "Morkurin Gugan" – material that really demonstrates the sharp, free-thinking sound of the group. Next is work from a trio led by Itaru Oki, with some really bold trumpet lines – stretching out and carving great space over relatively open, free territory – on titles "Flying Into Space" and "Conversation With Water". The trio of Yuji Ono follows, grooving soulfully on some tracks instrumentally, joined by vocals from Kimiko Kasai on a few others – titles that include "Kenny's Mood", "Get Out Of Town", and "Autumn Leaves". Then, the best work of all – two long vocal tracks that feature Kasai singing hip and wordlessly, with combined backing from the groups of Oki and Ono – titles that include "Black Shadow Woman" and "Theme Of The Unknown People".

An amazing dip into the best years of Japanese jazz – that special time when the nation was really finding its own musical voice – and turning out some sounds that are still pretty darn incredible all these many years later! Despite the dates in the title, most of these tracks hail from the cusp of the 70s – the late 60s/early 70s stretch when things really took off in Japanese music, and players began to really experiment with new sounds and styles! All tracks here are groovers – and some have exotic elements that echo their Japanese origin, while others take on complex rhythmic modes, or use trippy electric touches – almost always with pretty darn soulful results. Titles include "Babylonia Wind" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Blue Soul" by Modern Jazz Sannin No Kai, "Tabaruzaka" by Nobuo Hara & Hozan Yamamoto, "Like Miles" by Teramasu Hino, "Favela" by Kazuo Yashiro, and "My Favorite Things" by Sadao Watanabe.

A rare soundtrack from Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino – and a set that's quite different than most of his albums of the time! There's still a strong jazz approach to the music – often with Teru's trumpet out in the lead – but the tunes are relatively sort, and often pretty darn groovy – almost an extension of the mode he hit briefly in the late 60s, but with more funk in the mix as well – thanks to some great electric piano, played with a rough-edged vibe that's almost noisy at times – and some basslines that really help set the groove for each tune. Titles and players are all in Japanese – but the music sparkles strongly, even without translation of the details – a killer batch of jazzy and funky numbers from the start of the 70s!

A highly percussive little album – and the first-ever appearance of the M'Boom ensemble on record! You might know the group from their later fame under the guidance of Max Roach, but here the combo is a much more equally-assembled cast of players – featuring not just Roach, but percussionists Roy Brooks, Joe Chambers, Omar Clay, Freddie Waits, Richard Pablo Landrum, and Warren Smith! Given that lineup, you've got a group that represents the forefront of jazz and creative percussion work at the start of the 70s – and added to the mix is the ultimate freedom allowed by the Strata East label – which has the group really stretching out in these amazing ways! Things are never too free or outside, and there's always a nicely spiritual core to the record – but there is an incredible shift between percussive rhythms and melody – on instrumentation that includes vibes, tympani, xylophone, marimba, drums, and plenty of percussion – plus even and Indian flute too. And maybe coolest of all, there's even some saw, played by Omar Clay and Roy Brooks – used n a weird way that almost sounds electronic! Titles include "Heaven Sent", "Inner Passion", "Elements Of A Storm/Thunder & Wind", "Jihad Est Mort", and "Morning Noon Midday".

A tremendous burner from Japanese drummer Takeo Moriyama – a really freewheeling set that rolls out with the kind of post-Coltrane energy that may well make Moriyama the Japanese equivalent of Elvin Jones! The drums are fantastic throughout – but the real star of the set may well be reedman Tomoki Takahashi, who blows tenor on these long, inventive solos that really stretch out – but also has an ability to step back inside and groove rhythmically when needed – a balance that's definitely aided by the album's work on piano from Fumio Itabashi. The album features a very long, burning take on "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – plus the cuts "Flush Up" and "Yellow Bear".

Modal, magical, and mighty soulful too – a killer 70s set from drummer Takeo Moriyama, and one that wonderfully mixes lyrical moments with some more freewheeling energy! Moriyama's got a perfect balance with the group – and the album has some especially nice work on piano from the great Fumio Itabashi – a player who can be bold one minute, personal the next, yet never lose his sense of presence or punch. Katsumi Odagiri serves up some excellent tenor and soprano sax, really shading in the grooves with a lot of soul – and in addition to work from Hideaki Mochizuki on bass, the record also features wonderful guest work on trombone from Shigeharu Mukai, a player whose sensitivity always brings another level to any session he joins. Titles include "Sunrise", "Hush A Bye", "North Wind", "Lover Man, and "Snow Tiger".

One of the greatest albums ever on the legendary Strata East label – and that's saying a hell of a lot! Drummer Billy Parker is a player that we don't know much, but he'll always be well-remembered for this album's sublime blend of spiritual jazz styles! The lineup is wonderful – a hip quintet with Ron Bridgewater on tenor and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet – plus sister Dee Dee on additional vocals at a few points too! Donald Smith also plays piano, and sings a bit – with his warmly soulful style that makes the album's leadoff track a killer classic – and the rest of the group is rounded out by Cecil McBee on bass and Parker on drums. Tracks have those perfect blends of searching, soaring elements that virtually define the Strata East vision in the 70s – and titles include the sublime "Dance of The Little Children", plus "Gemini's Lullaby", "Home", "Get With It", and "Freedom Of Speech".

Wonderfully tripped-out sounds from the Japanese scene at the start of the 70s – a mix of older folkloric elements and more electric fusion modes – coming together in a really unique sound! There's lots of flute at the front of the tracks – played with an airy, spacious quality that has it drifting nicely over the fuller rhythms at the back – a heady brew of electric bass and guitar, tight drums, and more – all swelling together to make the whole set groove! Yet it's the airiness of the flute that really makes things unique – quite different than some of the funky flute modes from the US or UK scene of the late 60s – with an ethereal charm that's almost timeless. Titles include the side-long "Concerto For Shino Flute & Rock Band" – plus "Across The Universe", "Teach Your Children", and "Celtic Rock".

Samba and guitar – served up in a really warm and wonderful blend from Neco – a player who never made it big on our shores, but who can play the acoustic guitar in the same best 60s modes as Baden Powell! The session is nice and spare – mostly just light percussion, plus an occasional flute – all dancing in a sweet little groove, and setting up a perfect sort of pattern for Neco's inventive solos on guitar – more than rhythmic enough on their own to swing even without any backings! There's a nice sort of understatement here, but a good deal of complexity too – especially when Neco surprises us by bringing in some jazz-based changes at just the right moments. Titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Samba Do Aviao", "Ole Ola", "Nao Tenho Lagrimas", "Apelo", and "Agora E Onza".

The first album recorded by Kazumi Watanabe, the Japanese guitarist whose firey style would go onto play a big part in the growth of that country's jazz scene during the 70s! This album's quite different from the later smoother work from Kaz – a pretty intense set, and it features Watanabe grooving hard in a mixture of freebop and fusion styles – in a sextet with drummer Motohiko Hino, plus tenor, bass, and piano! The best cuts are the covers – Joe Henderson's "Isotope" and Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa" – both of which are straighter than the rest of the tracks on the album, with a bit more focus – although other titles are still pretty nice, and include "Infinite" and "Cortly".

A massive tribute to the overlooked John Danser – a force on the New York scene for decades – but an artist whose genius is only finally getting its due! Danser's 70s groovers have been causing ripples with crate diggers for years – but this set stretches back to show the full picture of the mighty man – and includes some brilliant numbers that blend hardbop and Latin jazz, others which have a groovy sort of soundtrack feel, and some of the more classic Danser modes – which come across in a funky big band style that's mighty nice! Notes are all in Japanese, so we can't tell you much about the dates or players – but the grooves alone are more than worth the price of admission, and have a soulful brilliance that speaks volumes on their own. Titles include "Burnito", "The Wanderer", "Bossana", "The Alcove", "Moods", "Mucho Loco", "Istanbul Express", and "Have Axe Will Swing".

Some of our favorite albums ever from pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – an amazing run of eight records for the Black Saint/Soul Note label – rich in fresh colors, tones, and new musical ideas! Some of the funkiest female soul ever recorded – the near-complete work of James Brown diva Vicki Anderson, compiled here officially for the first time ever! Vicki was one of the first female singers to work with James – replacing the sweeter style of vocalist Anna King in the James Brown Revue of the late 60s, and setting the stage for better-known hard soul singers Marva Whitney and Lyn Collins in years to come! Vicki recorded some excellent singles with James and the band backing her up – but never actually cut a full LP, which is why this overdue set is so essential. Vicki's got a socking-hard sound that worked equally well with the early funk sound of the James Brown Band of the late 60s, as it did during her later recordings with the JBs and Bobby Byrd. The collection brings together 17 of Vicki's recordings under the James Brown umbrella – including a number that we'd never heard before, some duets with James and Bobby Byrd, and a few of her singles recorded under the name of Myra Barnes. And you can take our word for it that you won't find a better collection of funky female soul – because this one's hard-stepping and massively grooving all the way through! Some consider this the worst point in Louis' career – when he was singing odd pop material for Decca, and had really left his jazz roots behind. We don't think it's that bad, though – and the album's got a wonderfully playful style that shows what a great entertainer Louis could be when he was up for the challenge. Gordon Jenkins did the arrangements, and the record features Louis' version of "Blueberry Hill" – plus the tracks "Chlo-e", "Jeannine", "Spooks!", "Trees", and "It's All In The Game".

Why these guys never got over bigger is beyond us! Between A Rock And A Hard Place is filled with dope rhymes, timeless beats, and a mellow, tuneful vibe that's as strong as just about anything we can think of from that fertile early-to-mid 80s scene. Titles include "Lower Da Boom", "Cummin' Thru Ya F**kin Block" feat Redman, "Drama", "Dynamite Soul", "C'Mon Wit Da Git Down" (plus the remix feat Busta Rhymes), "What Goes On?", and "Wrong Side Of Da Tracks". A couple of bonus tracks on this 2013 CD version: "Dynamic Soul II (Lip Service Remix)" feat Mad Skillz and "It's Gettin Hot (Remix)".

A great 12-inch from BADBADNOTGOOD – with a far-reaching jazzy/cosmic funk take on Kanye West's "Flashing Lights" – plus the equally impressive "UWM". "Flashing Lights" kicks off sparely with thick keys and heavy, heavy drum sound – in a way that initially made us think it was going to settle in with sort of a space rock take on Kanye's track – but it blasts off from there with a far more varied, continually evolving sound. The beats roll from stable to frenetic, and the tune eventually brings in some pretty incredible soul jazz keyboards – and finally comes full circle. "UWM" is a creative mix of spacey hip hop and jazzy keyboard grooves.

A folk funk classic from the early 70s – and a weird little record that has a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The arrangements are quite soulful, almost funky at times – with a righteous undercurrent that reminds us of Richard Evans or Charles Stepney at Cadet Records. But the vocals – by singer Barbara Massey – have a flanged-out quality that's clearly overdubbed, creating a double-voiced sound that's almost a bit like Brasil 66! This mix of modes is really great – completely unique, and sublime throughout – with a vibe that was years ahead of its time, and which is finally beginning to get some recognition these many years later. Arrangements are by the pair, but Deodato also had a hand in the record too – and the core combo of musicians includes Grady Tate on drums, Ralph McDonald on percussion, and Sam Brown on guitar – alongside more guitars from Ernie and keyboards and piano from Barbara. Tracks include "Searching the Circle", "Do You Know", "For You", "Play With Fire", "My Love & I", "Satisfied", and "Prelude" – plus a wild remake of "Somebody to Love"!

In case you've been thinking "they don't make 'em like that anymore", think again – because Jill Barber delivers a sweet set of vocal numbers that take us back to the best crossover years of the late 50s and early 60s! The style is jazz overall, but Barber works in a tightly syncopated style of singing that also has a keen ear for pop as well – a blend that's a bit like styles used by 60s singers like Connie Francis or Brenda Lee – particularly the latter, as there's sometimes a slight, very slight, twang in the vocals. But even better – something those 60s singers never gave us – all tunes here are originals by Jill, many co-written with Les Cooper, who does a beautiful job handling production and overall orchestrations with just the right vibe for the tunes. US release features more tracks than the original Canadian release – and titles include "Be My Man", "Never Quit Loving You", "Chances", "Tell Me", "Old Flame", "A Wish Under My Pillow", "If It Weren't For Loving You", and "All My Dreams".

A treasure trove of 50s romance comics – brought together in a great-looking package, with helpful framing from author Michael Barson! The core material is great – way more than the soppy romance stories you might think – and instead some really compelling work that really gets at the worries and anxieties of America in the post-war years. Sure, there's certainly tales of gals looking for love in all the wrong places – but you'd also be amazed at how much of this stuff offers up a larger comment on society as well – penned with surprisingly thoughtful prose, and illustrated with relatively mature images too. If we had one complaint, it would be that Barson doesn't give us enough detail about the artists and writers of the material – but that's only because the whole thing's so beautiful, we want to know more! 208 pages, softcover, in full color.

Count Basie goes pop, and the results are mighty nice – a hard-swinging take on familiar tunes from the 60s, but all re-tooled the jazzy Basie way! The vibe here is right up there with the best Neal Hefti moments with the group – and although the arrangements are by Billy Byers, they've got that sense of tightness that Hefti first help bring to the band – a great setting for the inventive solos, and all the cool little twists and turns that make a record like this so great. And while you might think of the setting, or the title, as some sort of sell-out on the Count's part – the album's instead a perfect way to hear what made the Basie band so great – how they could completely transform tunes like "Pretty Woman", "Bye Bye Love", "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy", "At Long Last Love", and "Go Away Little Girl".

An incredible record – and quite possibly our favorite Beach Boys album ever! Sunflower is the kind of record that's easy to pass by when you're first getting into the group, but later on – after digging for gems on records like Wild Honey or Friends, you'll come back to it as a totally solid record, filled with loads of excellent little songs like "Slip On Through", "This Whole World", "Cool, Cool Water", "Tears In The Morning", and "Add Some Music To Your Day". The whole thing holds together better than any other post-Smile album we can think of – and it's an endless treat that we're always coming back to!

A massive collection of work from Beggars Opera – Vertigo Records giants who work here with a heck of a lot of great work on organ! The set features a fair bit of music from each of the group's four albums – Act One, Waters Of Change, Pathfinder, and Get Your Dog Off Me – plus some single tracks too – all wrapped together as a 2CD set that really shows a great progression in the group's style – from tripped-out and jamming, to tighter and more song-based – yet always with a soaring sort of energy in the end. The keyboards alone have a strength to rival Rick Wakeman's best work for Yes – and titles include "Passacaglia", "Memory", "Raymond's Road", "Festival", "Impromptu", "Fox", "The Witch", "Pathfinder", "Sarabande", "Think", "Time Machine", "Lament", and "Working Man".

An amazing achievement for Ruben Blades – a full suite of tracks conceived and composed by Ruben as a "disco drama" on wax! The work isn't the disco-styled album you might think from this description – and is more of a mini-opera or concept album by Blades, one that features ambitious arrangements from Louie Cruz, Marty Sheller, and Carlos Franzetti – using strings and more standard Latin backings to expand the tunes tremendously, and make the whole album work with the full drama it requires. There's a few spoken bits on the set, which give way to some great songs – and the album also has a few instrumental passages. Willie Colon produced and supervised the whole effort – and tracks on this second part include "Epilogo", "El Velorio", "Manuela Despues", "El Entierro", "Hay Que Viver", and "Maestra Vida".

A great new album from this 70s Afro Funk legend – work that shows that Gydeu Blay Ambolley hasn't lost a bit of his groove over the years! There's a really great approach to the album that keeps things fresh – a sound that's lean and stripped-down, and not overproduced at all – creating a vibe that almost makes you think the record came from some Ghanian studio in the 70s! Gyedu Blay handles lead vocals and tenor, and the set features loads of tight percussion that bubbles along beautifully in an Afro Funk groove – plus tight horns on the top, and a bit of fuzzy guitar to give things a nice edge. Lyrics are nice and sharp, and titles include "Afrika Yie", "Game", "Bad Bad Boy", "Blakk Man Dey Suffer", "E Dey Walk For Ground", "Viktims", and "O Maame O Papa".

One of Bley's best records from the 60's, and a great session recorded in Rome with Barry Altschul on drums and Mark Levinson on bass. We think of this era in Bley's career as sort of his middle period, after some important time spent with Ornette, one of the few pianists Coleman ever used, and Jimmy Giuffre, as we as Sonny Rollins, all of whose influence had made an impact on Bley, as a performer, writer and leader. The playing is wide open, but with a keen sense of group interplay and a wonderful dynamic between the three, a post free sensibility that was very progressive but never too noisy or oblique. The tracks include Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin", Annette Peacock's "Both", Carla Bley's "Ida Lupino" and "Albert's Love Theme", and Bley's own "Mazatalon".

Brilliant garage psyche from Blues Magoos – a group that's raw and punchy enough to pummel, but pulled off some sweeter numbers and lighter harmonies incredibly well! Walloping drums, excitable vocals and wailing organ grooves – the cracked the charts, but still bring a fully charged proto punk vibe. Totally excellent, the kind of thing we wish were staples of oldies radio, but for whatever reason are left to deeper rock diggers to discover all these years later. Includes "Sometimes I Think About", "Love Seems Doomed", "Worried Life Blues", "Tobacco Road", "One By One" and "I'll Go Crazy".

One of the more guitar-driven groups on the West End label at the end of the 70s – an outfit with a really great approach to cutting longer dancefloor grooves! Tracks on the album have a nice tight feel that's echoed strongly by the guitar and keyboard work on the tracks – not as spacey as you might think from the sci-fi cover of the record, but still with a strong cosmic groove nonetheless! The album includes the legendary break cut "The Mexican", served up here in a full version that's nearly 12 minutes long, and which has lots of nice congas and guitars! Other titles include "Main Man", "Don't Stop The Music", and "Super Max".

Sublime sounds from Booker T & The MGs – the group's first five albums, laid out in one totally package! The progression in Memphis soul here is wonderful – as the package starts with the initial Green Onions set – a record that grew out of a famous jam from Book and the group in the studio – then moves through Soul Dressing, And Now, Hip Hug Her, and Doin Our Thing – records that get funkier and funkier at each new spin – showing how the group really tightened up their style, and helped transform the sound of instrumental soul in the process! Loads of great Hammond from Booker T, mixed with killer guitar from Steve Cropper – and a motherlode of great cuts that include "Green Onions", "Comin Home Baby", "Can't Be Still", "Home Grown", "Think", "Soul Jam", "Taboo", "One Mint Julep", "Plum Nellie", "Outrage", "Night Owl Walk", "Double Or Nothing", "Sunny", "Pigmy", "Slim Jenkins Place", "Hip Hug Her", "Soul Sanction", "The Beat Goes On", "Blue Or Green", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Never My Love", and "I Can Dig It". A great little album from Booker T & The MGs – recorded in the post Green Onions years, at a time when the group was really coming together – with a tightness that perfectly illustrates their sublime Memphis instrumental groove! The album's heavy on guitar and organ, as you'd expect – that great Booker/Steve Cropper sound that can't be denied – and there's a rawness here that you don't get as much in later years – more of a funky 45 vibe that really keeps things fresh! Titles include a few nice originals – like "Soul Jam" and "My Sweet Potato" – but ever the covers sound pretty darn great, with a lot more imagination than the usual instrumental filler. As proof, there's a killer version of "Summertime", with a nice modal groove, plus nice takes on "Think" and "Working In A Coal Mine".

One of the hippest records ever to come out of Chicago – the sole recording by Boscoe, a group who was even more obscure and experimental than contemporaries like The Pharoahs or Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Like those groups, Boscoe has a very unique, very visionary approach – one that's not content just to echo the standard post-Coltrane modes that other spiritual jazz groups around the country were hitting – but which instead moves into territory that touches on the darker sides of funk, soul, and spoken word of the time – all with a message that's incredibly powerful, and conception that's wonderfully fresh throughout! The group's lineup features tenor, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, and drums – but they way they're put together is often far different than other funky combos – and it's clear that the group had as much of a sensibility about the overall sound of their record as they did their freer grooves. At times, there's a righteousness here that recalls the best of the early Westbound Records scene from Detroit – but there's an even higher agenda too, which is more in keeping with the spiritual aspriations of their Chicago contemporaries, and which really show up in the lyrics. The whole album's a masterpiece from start to finish – unlike anything that we can think of, still ripe for rediscovery today, and just the kind of set that makes us prouder than ever of our Chicago heritage! Titles include "We Ain't Free", "Money Won't Save You", "Now and Den", "He Keeps You", "I'm What You Need", and "Writin' On The Wall".

Deep southern soul from vocalists Chuck Brooks, Joe Wilson and George Soule – a both gritty and and some sweeter material cut at Malaco Studios, mostly in the early-to-mid 70s – with some rare 45 numbers, and others that were never issued at all! The Chuck Brooks tracks are wonderful and show a real range, from funky, stripped down numbers to bigger productions that still have plenty soulful grit to them! The Joe Wilson tunes are just as strong – with a heavy bottom end to the rhythms, organ and vamping soul guitar in the mix, and uniquely emotive vocals from Chuck. The set's closed out by a trio of tunes by George Soule, solid, moody, a mix of soul, a bit of southern rock & pop, and Motown ballad influences. Really incredible stuff! Great reissue of James' second set of tracks recorded live at the famous Apollo Theatre! We like this one way better than volume one, and find it to be a much heftier set of tracks – with a stunning array of sheer raw showmanship. This one's in a 2 LP format, with lots more room for The Godfather and his band to stretch out and groove in the great way that they do when they play live. Tracks include "Bring It Up", "Let Yourself Go", "Think" (in duet form), a great version of "There Was a Time", "It May Be The Last Time", "I Feel Good (I Got You)", "Prisoner Of Love", "Out Of Sight", "Try Me", "It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World", "Lost Someone","Thanks", "Let Yourself Go", "Cold Sweat", "I Feel Alright", and "Please, Please, Please". Very nice stuff!

Not necessarily a record of interviews – as the title might make you think – but one of Bruce's best records for Fantasy! The album's got some very edgey bits that approximate his live material, and which take the best part of his cleaner act, and transfer them well to record. Titles include "Dijinni In The Candy Store", "Enchanting Transylvania", "Interview With Dr Sholem Stein", "The Interview", "All Broadway Musicals Sound The Same, Especially The Baritones", and "The March Of High Fidelity".

An excellent biker soundtrack – very different than the usual bag! For this one, Tony Bruno has come up with some great instrumentals – many of them jazzier than you'd think, and a few with some nice funky Capitol instrumental touches – not so much studio fuzz guitar, as they are groovy numbers that are a lot less hairy than the guys on screen in the movie! The change is a nice one – not as rockish as the regular biker soundtrack – although there are some vocal numbers too, done in the Tower/Sidewalk sort of style. Yet it's the instrumentals that really send us – and which make this album well worth seeking out! Titles include "Chase Of Death", "Goofin", "Bass Lake Run", "Hang On Tight", and "Al and Alice".

An absorbing biography of one legendary French singer Edith Piaf – one of the most alluring voices of the past century – and superbly written by Carolyn Burke! Edith Piaf lived as fascinating of a life as any international icon we can think of – musical or otherwise – and Burke does a terrific job of of telling her story in a way that chronicles her artisty on a deeper level. There's no way to tell the Piaf story without covering the more sensational aspects of it – but we're just as enthusiastic to read about her vocal and lyrical craft. Burke manages to make the story of Piaf the artist and it's a very, very engrossing one at that!

Beautiful bass work from 50s LA player Red Callender – heard here on this classic side recorded for the Modern imprint. Swingin Suite is easily one of Red's tightest sessions – a date that has Callender's basslines strongly leading a nonet of players that includes Harry Jones on trumpet, John Ewing on trombone, Willie Green on alto sax, and Buddy Collette on flute and tenor. Collette's lines have a nice sharp edge throughout, and soar out beautifully amidst the bigger backings – and although a "suite", the whole session's got a much more relaxed feel than that compositional title might make you think. Tracks include "On Again", "Greenery", "Pastel", "Dancers", "October Blue", "Bihari", "Skyline", and "Outlines".

Sweet British harmony soul from this overlooked 70s group – a really wonderful record that continues some of the best mellow group styles of the earlier part of the decade! Dave Collins – of Dave & Ansel Collins fame – is a member of the trio – but the sound here is more in keeping with the best New Jersey group modes than any of his earlier hits – a wonderfully fragile mode that has the voices hanging in air, coming together in sublime late night harmony sounds! A few numbers get slightly more uptempo, but the record's a pretty ballad-heavy one overall – and tracks include "Indebted To You", "Never Lose Never Win", "Why Can't We Be Lovers?", "Think I'll Leave This Song Just Like It Is", "Hogtied", "Chase A Miracle", and "Cold Steel". 2 bonus tracks on this CD version: "This Eternal Flame" from a 1976 single, and the previously unreleased "Make It".

An obscure later album from west coast soul group Chapter 8 – recorded after Anita Baker had left the group to move out on her own, but done for the mid 80s Beverly Glen indie, where Baker had also gotten her start as a solo act! The set's got a feel that's smooth and sophisticated – tighter even than the group's 70s album on Mercury – and most of the tracks focus on mellow modern and more adult-styled soul numbers that showcase the vocals of singers Valerie Pinkston and Gerald Lyles. Titles include "How Can I Get Next To You", "Don't Stop Loving Me", "How Is It Possible", "Love Loving You", "It's My Turn", and "Don't You Think It's Time".

A pretty sweet set of retro futurist synth from Chrome Canyon – which is essentially the solo project of Morgan Z and guests – and a mix of late 70s Krautrock-era synthy bombast and early 80s electro soundtracky styles! Overall, it's got sort of a Euro disco-tinged soundtrack vibe – think Giorgio Moroder, Wendy Carlos and 80s soundtrack-era Tangerine Dream – along with more starkly minimal tones and key, though used to maximum effect! There's also some twists and turns – like the cosmic post-fusion sax on the title track, bits of guitar, drums and other instrumentation. It's a very well structured batch of instrumentals – with a focused, song-based approach – as opposed to looser synthy experimentation. A leftfied win for Stones Throw! Includes "Beginnings", "Pluze", "Legends", "Branches", "Elemental Themes", "Cave Of Light", "Generations", "Chasing The Dead", "Sacred Mountain", "Signs From An Old World", "Carfire On The Highway" and more.

"Nubian Nut" is more of the Atomic Dog formula – kind of a popping bass groove that was the inherited legacy of P-funk that every other band was ripping off at the time, and rap-like vocals that George would probably never claim were rap! "Free Alterations" is the real charmer here – a sweet mellow soul track with a midtempo stepping groove, great harmony vocals, and a sound that's very different than any other Clinton tune we can think of!

A rare session as a leader from trumpeter Johnny Coles – a player who cut some great work in the groups of James Moody and Gil Evans, but who shines even more brightly on this classic Blue Note album! Coles really has an ear for finding the hippest side of his instrument – and he blows with a style that's unlike anyone else we can think of – and certainly far from the mellower tones of his previous leader set for Columbia. This album's got a great mix of hardbop and modern ideas – right up there with the best Blue Note had to offer at the time – and the group's filled with equally hip players who include Joe Henderson on tenor, Leo Wright on alto and flute, Duke Pearson on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and either Pete LaRoca or Walter Perkins on drums. Titles include "Heavy Legs", "Hobo Joe", "Jano", and "Little Johnny C". Very hip, very hard, and very swingin!

Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – a pair of late 70s albums – together in a single set! Loveshine finds the group working under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". Con Funk Shun really hit a tight groove Candy – late 70s dancefloor funk at its finest – and a turning point for the group that set the scene for 80s grooves to come! The killer group vocals, thumping funk bass and punctuating horn blasts are in full effect, and the group is also starting to work more with synthesizers and electronic sound washes – the spacey touches blending perfectly with their tried-and-true funk. A great batch of tunes, well-produced by the group and Skip Scarborough, and ear-pleasing tunes all the way – sparkling with a great blend of bassy funk and smooth ballads! Tracks include "Fire When Ready", "Chase Me", "Not Ready", "Da Lady", "Candy" and "(Let Me Put) Love On Your Mind", "Main Slice" and "Images".

A nice 6 song mini LP/EP scorcher from Portsmouth, NH garage rockers The Connection! Seven Nights To Rock is a hook-filled blast – with a tight, no frills and no-nonsense style inspired by the greatests 60s garage sounds – and a tuneful delivery that's above and beyond so many of their contemporary peers. The group not only has a great ear for hooks, but the ability to pull them off with a mix of raucous rock and sweeter harmonies. Fun stuff! Includes "Seven Nights To Rock", "I Think She Digs Me", "Comes 'N Goes", "Bad To Worse", a cover of The Ramones rarity "Yeah Yeah" and in another cool nod to The Ramones – the Connection original "Gonna Leave You" features production by Ed Stasium – producer/engineer of some the Ramones most treasured material!

A wonderful album of mellow soul tracks! The record is Lou Courtney's masterpiece – and it's a jam-packed set filled with great tracks that rank right up there with classic 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye, Leroy Hutson, or Leon Ware! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. A real dream of an album – and filled with great tracks like "I Will If You Will", "I'm In Need Of Love", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", "Somebody New Is Loving On You", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", and "The Common Broken Heart".

One of the greatest grooves from the legendary Desco Records years – a brilliant album of modern Afro Funk done by The Daktaris – in a groove that's just as hard-hitting as any of Fela's work from the 70s! The album was one of the first to bring back an older African style to current funk – and even years later, it's still one of the best examples of the sound – a razor-sharp session that helped set the stage for better-known Antibalas work to come! Percussion and guitar is super-heavy throughout – produced with that bare-bones Desco style, and handled in a way that makes you think the record might be some treasure from mid 70s Nigeria – a trick the label tried to pull when it was released! Cuts include a cover of Fela's "Upside Down", James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", and the originals "Super Afro-Beat", "Daktari Walk", "Voodoo Soul Stew", and "Quiet Man Is A Dead Man".

An amazing step sideways for London's Zoot Money – a move from mod to psych, with a trippy quality that's quite different from his jazzy sound a few years before! The group's got legendary fame – not just for the shift in styles by Zoot, but also for the fact that it features key work from a young Andy Summers – later of The Police – who works here with some great tones on guitar, and plenty of fresh ideas in all the songs he penned on the record! Money's vocals are wonderful – almost as if Georgie Fame were singing on a psych album – which is as unusual and compelling as you might think. These sessions were recorded in the late 60s, but mostly unissued at the time – but really rank with the best of the early Syd Barrett or Kevin Ayers generation – with titles that include "Coffee Song", "Madman Running Through The Fields", "This Island", "High Flying Bird", "Four Firemen", "Soma (parts 1 & 2)".

Legendary Bay Area soul numbers by Darondo – as re-edited/remixed/liberally-adapted by Tall Black Guy and Dandy Teru! First up is Tall Black Guy's take on "I Don't Want To Leave" – which uses Darando's "Sure Know How To Love Me" as it's source material. The breezy, easygoing vibe of the original carries over pretty well onto it – with a think bass sound and a tripper, spacey club soul vibe. On the flip, Dandy Teru's "Untrue" is just as free of an interpetation – using strains of Darondo's "True" a soulful springboard into the cosmos.

The greatest entertainer ever? We think so – and this 2LP set offers Sammy D in the best possible way to get him: live, and in the very familiar turf of the Sands Hotel. This live album, and it's counterpart (At The Cocoanut Grove, also on Reprise) are, in our opinion, Sammy's best recordings – because they feature him ripping through a bunch of material, doing lots of great impressions and medleys, and really swinging with a tight little combo led by Michael Silva, the drummer. The groove is really jazzy – way jazzier than on some of Sammy's studio LPs from the time – and he runs through a range of material from pop tunes to standards, done in a style that's far different than you'd expect for the titles. The vocals are tight, heartfelt, but also given a professional little finesse that really makes them sparkle. Titles include "Ain't I", "Another Spring", "On A Clear Day", "As Long As She Needs Me", "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and 2 fantastic medleys with lots of jazzy songs. Heck, Dean Martin never got a chance to cut a double live album – and Frank really ever did one – so given that Sammy got a chance to do two of them, you've gotta figure the format really worked for him! This is the real Mr. Entertainment, and you owe it to yourself to hear him as he really was.

Our favorite album ever from Tyrone Davis – even if it's completely different than most of his other work too! The set's got a wonderfully smooth feel right from the start – a mellow-grooving, slow-stepping approach that works perfectly for Tyrone's wonderful vocals – pushing them out of their bluesy roots, into a more sophisticated modern soul style that's mighty nice! The change is a key illustration of the way that Chicago soul was really growing in the 70s – moving into some of the richer territories that you'd find in work from Philly, too – and Davis' growth on a record like this is a real testament to his maturity as a singer. James Mack handled the arrangements – and titles include the sublime "In The Mood" – plus "You Know What To Do", "Keep On Dancin", "All The Love I Need", "I Don't Think You Heard Me", "Ain't Nothing I Can Do", and "I Can't Wait". CD features 2 bonus tracks – single mixes of "In The Mood" and "Ain't Nothing I Can Do".

Sublime soul through and through – 2 classics from The Delfonics, back to back on a single CD! First up is self-titled record The Delfonics – the third album in an amazing early run from The Delfonics – the kind of work that set a whole new standard for group soul in the 70s! A number of the tracks here had already risen to fame before the album's release as singles – and these are mixed with some additional tracks that are woven together in a near-perfect symphony of sound! The mighty Thom Bell arranged most of the numbers here – save for 2 by Anthony Dorsey – and the group's heavenly harmonies are in amazing form on both mellow ballads and a few more righteous numbers. Titles include "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", "Funny Feeling", "Over & Over", "Baby I Love You", "When You Get Right Down To It", "Delfonics Theme", "Trying To Make A Fool Of Me", "I Gave To You", "Down Is Up Up Is Down", and "Think About Me". Tell Me This Is A Dream has The Delfonics just getting better and better! The longer the group recorded, the more they picked up this strange spacey quality that pushed them past some of their contemporaries of the early 70s. And on an album like this, they prove that they're way more than just Thom Bell puppets by showing that they have a rich talent for a wide variety of complicated arrangements that really push the vocal group sound of the 70s. They take many stylistic risks, coming up with really sinister new harmonies, and always managing to stay clear of the cliches that buried some of their mates on the charts. Bell still arranges some of the material, but the record also features work by Norman Harris and Caldwell MacMillan, who did the real genius work on the record. This masterpiece includes the sublime "Hey, Love", plus "Walk Right Up to the Sun", "I'm A Man", "Too Late", "Love You Till I Die", "Looking for a Girl", and "Round & Round".

A really wild little album – and exactly what it says in the title: hard rock from the Middle East! The album takes eastern instrumentation on oud, bouzoki, tamboura, and accordion – and fuses it with some hard grooving bass, guitar, and drums – all hitting heavy late 60s acid-tinged modes, and making for a perfect blend with the exotic instrumentation! The album's arranged and directed by Felix Pappalardi, and has some of the nice funky rock touches of his own work – not to mention a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! Titles include "Wala Dai", "Kley", "Besaha", "Treea Pethya", "Hala Laya", "Selim Alai", and "Isme".

Great early work from Joao Donato – the US issue of some recordings that (we think) made up the Polygram album Muito A Vontade. The tracks were recorded in Brazil, with Donato on piano, and rhythm by Milton Banana drums, Sebastian Neto bass, and Amaury Rodrigues on bongos and pandiero. The tracks are simple and beautiful, with that well-pronounced sense of grace and space that Donato has always brought to his best work – especially that in the bossa mode. Titles include "Tim Dom Dom", "Vamos Nessa", "Sambou Sambou", "Jodel", "So Se For Agora", "Tema Teimosa", and "Muito A Vontade".
