Elmer Bernstein — Movie & TV Themes Composed & Conducted By Elmer Bernstein ... LP
Choreo, 1962. Very Good+ .... $7.99
Elmer Bernstein serves up some of his most famous soundtrack themes – but in a style that's even more jazz-based than the original! The group here is a large one, filled with great west coast players – and Bernstein's tunes sparkle even more in this rich setting than they did in their initial use on film – partly because the presentation allows some musicians the chance to really open up and solo! The lineup features Bud Shank and Bob Cooper on saxes, Pete Candoli and Don Fagerquist on trumpets, Milt Bernhart and Dick Nash on trombones, Bob Bain on guitar, Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, and Francisco Aquabella on percussion – and titles include "Rat Race", "Three Time Blueser", "Hop Skip But Jump", "Jubilation", "Man With The Golden Arm", "Saints & Sinners", and "Sweet Smell Of Success".
(Cover has some wear and splitting on the top seam.)

Chrome Canyon — Elemental Themes ... CD
Stones Throw, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 13.98
A pretty sweet set of retro futurist synth from Chrome Canyon – which is essentially the solo project of Morgan Z and guests – and a mix of late 70s Krautrock-era synthy bombast and early 80s electro soundtracky styles! Overall, it's got sort of a Euro disco-tinged soundtrack vibe – think Giorgio Moroder, Wendy Carlos and 80s soundtrack-era Tangerine Dream – along with more starkly minimal tones and key, though used to maximum effect! There's also some twists and turns – like the cosmic post-fusion sax on the title track, bits of guitar, drums and other instrumentation. It's a very well structured batch of instrumentals – with a focused, song-based approach – as opposed to looser synthy experimentation. A leftfied win for Stones Throw! Includes "Beginnings", "Pluze", "Legends", "Branches", "Elemental Themes", "Cave Of Light", "Generations", "Chasing The Dead", "Sacred Mountain", "Signs From An Old World", "Carfire On The Highway" and more.

Charles Earland — Earland's Street Themes (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1983. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99
A great little groover from keyboardist Charles Earland – and an album that definitely lives up to its title! There's plenty of street sounds going on here – lots of modern R&B modes that echo the changing styles of early 80s soul music, especially on the east coast! And as part of that, there's a good deal of vocals on the record, alongside Charles' keyboards – work by singers who include Larry Hancock, Bruce Gray, and Sheryl Kendrick – each of whom adds plenty to the record, working over jazzy grooves nicely scored by Earland. Titles include "Be My Lady", "Take Me Away", "Feels So Good To Me", "Burning Devotion", "Tell Me What It Is", and "Go All The Way". CD features a bonus track – "Be My Lady (7" mix)".

Calvin Jackson — Jazz Variations On Movie Themes ... LP
Reprise, Early 60s. Very Good+ .... $0.99
The title tells the whole tale of the album – as pianist Jackson plays jazzy versions of themes from films that include "Never On A Sunday", "A Summer Place", "From Here To Eternity", "The High & The Mighty", "Exodus", "Return To Peyton Place", and "High Noon". A number of tracks are piano solos, and others feature backings by bassist Al McKibbon and drummer Frank Capp.

Elliot Lawrence/John Neel/Elmer Bernstein — Lord Of The Flies – Plus Great Themes ... LP
AVA, Early 60s. Very Good+ .... $0.49
A strange little record – one that features a few tracks by Lawrence from Lord Of The Flies, The Great Chase, and David & Lisa – mixed with others from films that include To Kill A Mockingbird, Rat Race, Mutiny On The Bounty, and other films. Most of the material is pretty orchestral – and titles include "Lord Of The Flies", "Way Down East", and "Theme From David & Lisa" by Elliot Lawrence; "Rat Race", "A Girl Named Tamiko", "Two Weeks In Another Town", and "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Bernstein; "Cleopatra's Barge" by John Neel; and "Love Theme From Period Of Adjustment", "Our Language Of Love", and "Love Song From Mutiny On the Bounty" by Harry Betts.
(Cover has some tape residue and peeling on the spine and a promo ink stamp on back.)

Geoff Love — Star Wars & Other Space Themes/Close Encounters & Other Disco Galactic Themes ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1978. New Copy 2 CDs .... $16.99
Sweet soundtrack grooves from Brit maestro Geoff Love – two late 70s albums back to back in a single package! First up is Star Wars & Other Space Themes – a set that has Love really cashing in on the sci-fi cinema boom of the mid 70s – leaping off with the lead theme to Star Wars, but then sounding even groovier on a host of other cuts from previous years – a sweet range of numbers that's often heavy on Brit influences – arranged with some nice funky touches by Nick Ingman, with almost a KPM vibe at times! Titles include "UFO", "Barbarella", "Space 1999", "March", "Thunderbirds", "Dr Who", "Mars The Bringer Of War", and "Star Trek". Nick Ingman's the arranger on Close Encounters – and helps give the record a disco vibe that's quite different than the usual sci fi set – a groove that clearly stems from Ingman's great sound library work of the 70s – touched here with plenty of clubby rhythms and some especially great keyboards at times. The whole thing's funkier than you might expect – and titles include "Close Encounters", "Flight Fantastic", "Space Patrol", "Solar Sailor", "The Omega Man", "Star Wars", "Time Machine", and "Blake's 7".

new Geoff Love — Themes For Super Heroes/Big Terror Movie Themes ... CD
Vocalion (UK), 1976/1979. New Copy .... $15.99
Two soundtrack-themed albums – back to back on one CD! Themes For Super Heroes is a 1979 effort from Geoff Love – one timed to match up with the successful Superman film, but which also features bits from a range of TV heroes as well! Love's arrangements are lush, but often quite lean – done with some warm 70s glow at points, but never that sleepy, and with an ear for the right sort of dynamic bigger band arrangements to keep things interesting, when needed! Titles include "Blakes 7", "Spiderman", "The Bionic Woman", "The Six Million Dollar Man", "The Incredible Hulk", "Can You Read My Mind", and "Dick Barton Special Agent". Big Terror has a striking picture of Jaws on the cover – and follows up with its main theme, as well as key themes from a host of other 70s horror and disaster movies! Geoff Love changes things up in just the right way – almost making the album feel like a fresh batch of easy instrumentals instead of recaps of the exact soundtracks – on titles that include "Three Days Of The Condor", "The Exorcist", "The Eiger Sanction", "Jaws", "The Executioner", and "Death Wish".

Roland Shaw — James Bond In Action/Themes For Secret Agents ... CD
London/Poker, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $13.99
Spy themes galore – a full CD of famous James Bond tunes, paired with a whole bonus CD of additional work from Brit maestro Roland Shaw! Back in the 60s, Shaw recorded a host of great spy-styled sets for Decca – two albums of work with Bond on the cover and in the title, and two more with additional spy and secret agent themes! The best of that work's packaged together here, in an ultra-cool 2CD set that features 37 tracks in all – a good number of which were penned by John Barry for original Bond films, then redone by Roland in ways that are swinging 60s, with lots of mod instrumental moments – including some great guitar amidst all the horns. Titles include "Twisting With James", "You Only Live Twice", "Chateau Fight", "Pussy Galore's Flying Circus", "Thunderball", "Dawn Raid On Fort Knox", "Dr No's Fantasy", "James Bond Theme", "Diamonds Are Forever", "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Bond Below Disco Volante", "The Saint", "I Spy", "The Avengers", "Theme From The Man From Uncle", "Casino Royale", and "Mission Impossible".

Ettore Stratta & His Orchestra — Themes 75 ... LP
RCA, 1975. Very Good .... $34.99
Great work from this famous Italian maestro – sweeping, soaring instrumentals – but also a bit funky at times too! Ettore brings a real soundtrack approach to most numbers – fitting, given that most tunes here are film themes – and he uses full strings, plus some nicely isolated instrumentation at points, especially a bit of tinkling piano. Things are mostly straight, but there's a great funky break on his version of "The Godfather (part 2)" – and some sweetly gentle funk on "Once Is Not Enough" – another great warm number. Other titles include "The Big Hunt", "The Saddest Thing Of All", "Sheila Levine", "Incontro", and Stratta's own great "The Beginning Of Our Life".
(Cover has a promo stamp, edge wear, a spot of tape on the spine, a small sticker, and some pen on the back. Label has a small sticker.)

new Alan Tew — Hanged Man/Drama Suite Parts 1 & 2/Themes International Compilation ... CD
Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $16.99
A legendary TV soundtrack – music for a show that only ran for 8 episodes, but which has lived on for decades past the original program! The Hanged Man features some of the funkiest grooves to ever come from the Themes International sound library label – cuts scored by Alan Tew, and played by the label's hip group of session musicians – including Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards and Alan Parker on guitar! Although originally billed to a group named Bullet, the recordings are actually straight sound library sessions – but funky enough to match the best cop/crime work of the time – similar to DeWolfe music used in The Sweeney! There's an armful of samples on here, and even more great funky instrumentals – and the set not only features the cuts issued as The Hanged Man soundtrack, but also the albums Drama Suite Vol 1 & 2 – the original sound library records that created the music. The CD features a whopping 47 tracks in all – including lots of short cuts never on any other Hanged Man releases – with titles that include "The Rub Contract Man", "Helicop", "Money Runner", "The Detectives", "Night Watch", "The Fence", "Total Silence", "Eyes", "Master Plan", "Big One Prelude", "Snout", "Car Patrol", and "The Heister".

Various — Cosmic Future Groove Vol 1 – Spaced Out Disco & Funkified Electronic Themes 1975 to 1987 ... CD
Show Up (Germany), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy .... $16.99
Spacey funk and electronic sound library grooves from the mid 70s to early 80s – great stuff with a focus on the neon lighted, pulsating synth enhanced sounds of a perceived future – and previously unreleased! It's earliest material in the set is a Bernard Estardy track from 1975 that feels like a real precursor to the later grooves to come – Moog heavy spaciness that's more akin to early 80s grooves – which this set is heavily steeped in – with material by Marc Monsen, John Fiddy & Sammy Burdson, Gunter Greffenius, James Saunders and many more. Electro disco theme music, dramatic synth sequences, space funk and synth sounds galore! Includes "Robotory" by John Fiddy & Sammy Burdson, "Evasion" by Claude Perraudin, "Jupiter" by Gaston Borreani, "A Chance To Win 1 & 2 (Edit)" by Milan Pilar, "Video Funk" by VDB Joel, "Hercules" by Chris Evans-Ironside, "Tic Tac Ring" by Bernard Estardy, "Space Race" by Sammy Burdson, "Point Of Impact" by Gunter Greffenius and more. 16 tracks in all.

Roland Shaw — Themes For Secret Agents ... LP
London/Phase 4, Mid 60s. Very Good- Gatefold .... $4.99 Just Sold Out!
Easily one of the best of the Bond-alike albums of "spy" grooves from the 60s – handled by Brit easy maestro Roland Shaw, with a sound that's in keeping with the best soundtrack work of the time! Shaw's got a jazzy mode here that really opens up some of these tunes – letting the horns and piano come into play a bit more on a few numbers, and differing the songs a lot from their more famous versions used in the films. The package has a great kitschy cover, plus a cool montage of film scenes on the back – and titles include "The Saint", "The Ipcress File", "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold", "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Man From Uncle", "Our Man Flint", and "I Spy".

new Various — Easy Tempo Vol 4 – A Kaleidoscopic Collection Of Exciting & Diverse Cinematic Themes ... CD
Easy Tempo (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soundtrack funk doesn't get any better than this – thanks to a head-expanding of tracks from the Italian scene of the 60s and 70s – served up with the usual ear for a great cut by the folks at Easy Tempo! The groove here is far from the "easy" you might expect – and most numbers have tight drums, funky basslines, and other heavy elements – all put together with an approach to the music that's far different than anything happening in the US at the time, especially in the way the instruments sound in the end – and in the way that the production techniques make them do really crazy things! Titles include "Parangua" by Luiz Bacalov, "Flirt a Rio" by Piero Umiliani, "Side Sleep" by Berto Pisano, "Little Shakie Girl" by Armando Trovajoli, "Tremendous Stars" by Piero Piccioni, "Under Drama" by Giancarlo Gazzani, "Realta No 5" by Stelvio Cipriani, "So" by Lara Saint Paul, "Israelites" by Capuano, and "Citta Viva" by Ennio Morricone.

Plastic (Italy), 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The folks at Plastic dig a little deeper than usual for this one, and they turn up a nice batch of cuts – some obscure, some better-known – to define the genre of 60's Noir. The 16 tracks on the compilation are a mix of crime/spy type tracks, moody jazz vocal tracks, and dark moody orchestral themes. Although some of the stuff is a bit funky, the mood is much different than the usual funk compilation, and has more of an overall spooky feel. Tracks include "Out Of This World" by Mark Murphy, "Crossfire" by The Hurricanes, "Ennloro" by Percy Faith, "Jesus Christ Superstar" by Armando Sciascia, "Goldfinger" by Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers, "Love For Sale" by Eartha Kitt, "Harlem Love Theme" by JJ Johnson, and more by Lalo Schifrin, Cal Tjader, Oscar Brown, and others!

new Henry Mancini — Cop Show Themes ... LP
RCA, 1976. Used .... $29.99 Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest albums ever from Henry Mancini – a brilliant reworking of hit 70s cop show themes, put together with a really jazzy groove! The group's a big one – filled with hip players who include Clare Fischer on organ, Artie Kane on electric piano and harpsichord, Don Menza on tenor, Lee Ritenour on guitar – all instruments that are used strongly to help kick things nicely on the set, with a vibe that's right up there with the best funky 70s soundtracks. Harvey Mason is on drums, bringing up the bottom a bit more than usual for Mancini – and the choice of material really makes the record cook – with tracks that include "Kojak", "SWAT", "Police Woman", "Rockford Files", "Hawaii Five O", "Streets Of San Francisco", "Bumper's Theme", and "Baretta's Theme".

Show Up (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Wicked grooves from the German scene of the 70s – that stretch of the sound library generation when things were getting even more electronic than before – and picking up some great funky dancefloor modes in the process! Most of these numbers are heavy on keyboards – especially the more electronic types that warrant the "cosmic" in the title of the collection – usually delivered over clean, clear, upbeat rhythms that bring plenty of club, disco, and boogie modes to play in the process! Think of this one as the blueprint for the best Euro club sounds of the late 70s and early 80s – but since the tunes are even shorter and more focused, they pack a hell of a lot more punch too! Features work from sound libraries that include Media Music, DeWolfe, Sonimage, Jollymay, Golden Ring, Intersound, and more – with cuts that include "Greenwich Street" by Klaus Weiss, "Bacchanales Estardiennes" by Bernard Estardy, "Poursuite Dans La Nuit" by Roger Davy, "Spectator" by Tom Elliot, "Coordinates Meeting" by Peter Thomas, "Bio Rhythm No 3" by Thomas Clausen, "Flying Objects" by Roger Webb, and "Ele Toldoth" by Helmuth Brandenburg.

Show Up (Germany), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Stunning funk from the UK sound library scene of the 70s – a second great entry in this series that really ups the ante for the genre! The tunes here are pulled from a host of leading production companies at the time – and they offer up a sweet array of instrumental modes from the period – from jazzy riffing grooves to more ambitious soundtrack numbers with a really complicated vibe – yet one that never strays from the core funk promised in the title! In addition to offering cover scans of the original record, the package also tells a brief history of each imprint involved – Peer, Rouge, Programme, Bruton, and others – kind of a mini-lesson in sound library stalwarts – set here to some very groovy tunes. Titles include "City Police" by Dave Gold, "Nevada Junction" by Steve Gray, "Hot Property" by Keith Mansfield, "Fuel Injection" by Alan Hawksworth, "Flash Barrier" by John Hawksworth, "Beatin It" by T Elerth, "Thrust" by Nick Ingman, "Fast Drive" by Frank McDonald & Gerry Shury, "Gun Man" by John Saunders, "Product Efficiency" by Johnny Pearson, "Punch Drunk" by Duncan Lamont, "Riff Raff" by Martin Kershaw, and "Hit Man" by Sound Prospect.

20th Century, 1979. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
An album of theirs that you don't see that often – with Barry White's takes on popular movie hits. Some of this veers a little to close to the cheesy side of things, but it's worth it for the "Theme From King Kong" alone, an uptempo funk number that has a great almost afro-funk guitar, way up front in the mix. There's also a great take on the theme from Shaft, and "People of Tomorrow Are the Children of Today" from the Together Brothers soundtrack.

The soundtrack that put John Barry over the top – and to many, THE James Bond soundtrack! The album chills from the first notes of the haunting title theme – the majestic "Goldfinger", sung by Shirley Bassey with a tone that's as dangerous as a razor-sharp hat spinning through the air! Barry then takes over with some wonderful instrumentals – a blend of crime jazz, mood pieces, chase themes, and more – all peppered with that dark dark Bond theme that we love so much! Titles include "Into Miami", "Teasing The Korean", "Alpine Drive", "Bond Back In Action", "Gassing The Gangsters", and "Death Of Goldfinger".

Beach Boys — Little Deuce Coupe (mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Capitol, 1963. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 18.98
"Little Deuce Coupe" makes a second appearance on a Beach Boys album – this time around as a leadoff track to show the group's versatility on the hot rod market! Despite the change from surf themes, though, the music here is magically the same – sublime Wilson family harmonies, produced with a clean, clear simplicity that really makes the voices sparkle. And even when singing about cars, the Boys manage to break our hearts with their ballads and more gentle numbers – as you'll hear on a set of tunes that includes "Ballad Of Ole Betsy", "409", "Shut Down", "Our Car Club", "Be True To Your School", "No Go Showboat", "A Young Man Is Gone", and "Car Crazy Cutie". Includes the complete album in both the mono and stereo mixes.

Beach Boys — Pet Sounds (mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Capitol, 1966. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 18.98
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". Includes mono and stereo mixes of the whole album!

Beach Boys — Shut Down Vol 2 (mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Capitol, 1964. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 18.98
The Beach Boys' installment in Capitol's hot rod-themed Shut Down series – the first edition of which was devoted to a host of different artists! It's clear that even in this setting, The Beach Boys have way more to offer than just a few gimmicky car songs – as the record offers some of the early group's most tender, personal moments – real early gems like "The Warmth Of The Sun" and "Don't Worry Baby" - mixed in with more playful numbers like "Fun Fun Fun", "This Car Of Mine", "In The Parkin Lot", "Shut Down Part 2", and "Keep An Eye On Summer". It's this mix that really gets at the group's genius at the time – maturity creeping out amidst the youthful themes, in ways that few other 60s acts could ever hope to match. Includes the complete album in both the mono and stereo mixes!

Beach Boys — Today (mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Capitol, 1965. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 18.98
A pre-Pet Sounds moment of genius from The Beach Boys – a record with some surprisingly wonderful songs tucked in amongst more familiar rockers! There's a growing brilliance here that's clearly evident in Brian Wilson's production, the tunes tender themes, and the complicated harmonics used to carry the whole thing off – a mixture of sadness, lust, and frustration that shows up beautifully on tunes like "Please Let Me Wonder", "She Knows Me Too Well", "In The Back Of My Mind", "Good To My Baby", and "Don't Hurt My Sister". And sure, the album does include the clunky "Bull Session With Big Daddy" – but that's offset by hits like "Dance Dance Dance", "Help Me, Ronda", and "Do You Wanna Dance". Includes the complete album in both the mono and stereo mixes.

new Elmer Bernstein — Gold – Original Soundtrack ... LP
ABC, 1974. Very Good .... $1.99
Nicer work than usual for Elmer – at least for this period – a sweet 70s score that mixes some groovy vocal numbers, upbeat action themes, and more standard orchestral tunes. There's a sense of space to the work that's quite nice – almost as if Bernstein had been taking tips from some of the Italians of the time – and overall, the album's got more than a few really nice and interesting tracks! Vocal tunes include "Where Have You been All My Life" by Trevor Chance, "Gold" by Jimmy Helms, and "Wherever Love Takes Me" by Maureen McGovern – and instrumental tunes include "Diggin", "Flight", "Flood", "Sunday At The Mine", and "The Lovers".

Bixio/Frizzi/Tempera — Fantozzi/Il Secondo Tragico Fantozzi (2CDs/DVD) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs & DVD .... $32.99
A pair of Italian comedy soundtracks – both put together with a very unique feel! The scores on both sets is by the trio of Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – well known from edgier work on other soundtracks – but coming across here with some really unusual elements – including some plunky rhythms on main themes, mixed with melancholy melodies – plus isolated instrumental passages that really run the gamut – clearly changing to fit the whimsy of different scenes. There's a huge amount of material in the set – 62 tracks between both soundtracks, most of them relatively short and playful – and the set also comes with a DVD that features interviews with the composers.

new Blowfly — Rappin' Dancin' & Laughin' ... LP
Weird World, 1980. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Blowfly changes up his groove nicely for the 80s – taking on a tightly-stepping approach to funk that's clearly inspired by some of the changes on the west coast scene – using Zapp-ish rhythms in a mode that ends up working pretty darn well for his off-color spoken lyrics! There's almost a P-Funk quality to the record – especially as the themes get a bit more political and current events-ish than usual – trading the easy sex jokes for some other comic fare on tunes that include "Convoy", "Blowfly Vs. Darth Vadar", "The Incredible Fulk", and "The Insects Theme".

new Brighter Side Of Darkness — Love Jones ... LP
20th Century, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A tremendous bit of harmony soul from Chicago – one of the few cases where the Windy City really gave the east coast a run for its money – and the landmark album from teen soul quartet Brighter Side Of Darkness! Although young, Brighter Side managed to bring a depth to their work that was way more than kiddie soul – a heartfelt, heartbreaking quality that was all adult, no matter how youthful the themes – and their vocals are a perfect contrast to the fuller arrangements from producers Clarence Johnson and Johnny Cameron. The set contains the group's classic "Love Jones", still one of the best fragile harmony tracks of the early 70s – plus loads of other great numbers like "I Owe You Love", "I'm A Loser", "Just A Little Bit", and a superb remake of "Summer Ride".

King Britt — King Britt Presents Sister Gertrude Morgan ... CD
Ropeadope (UK), 2005. Used .... $9.99
A brilliant reworking of older gospel themes – beautifully recast here through the cosmic talents of King Britt, in an album that's quite possibly his most interesting work to date! For the session, Britt's taking older acapella vocals and tambourine rhythms from New Orleans evangelist Sister Gertrude Morgan – originally recorded in 1969, but expanded tremendously here through use of additional keyboards, percussion, and a surprising amount of acoustic instrumentation! Britt's got his usual drum patterns and electronics in the mix, but there's also a fair bit of slide guitar, harmonica, acoustic guitar, and even a bit of lap steel on the set – all of which makes for a sound that's as folksy as it is modern – really opening up a whole new chapter in Britt's career! Titles include "Let's Make A Record", "Living Bread", "Devil's Music", "Power", "New World In My View", "Unceremonious", and "I Was Healed By The Wounds".

Richard Wess scored some larger arrangements for the record – providing a sweeping backdrop that's a nice foil for Ray's piano – and titles include "Exodus", "Laura", "Affair To Remember", "True Love", "Three Coins In A Fountain", "The High & The Mighty" and "On Green Dolphin Street".

Heist films always provided some of the best soundtracks of the 70's, and this one (starring Robert Shaw and Richard Roundtree, and issued in the US as Diamond Shaft) is no exception! Roy Budd rises to the groovy occasion and scores some excellent moments that match a light orchestral sound with a throbbing electric bass and percussion underground – in a style that's like Lalo Schifrin's best work from the time. The LP's overflowing with tracks, including a few bonus mixes, and there's even 2 vocal numbers that feature The Three Degrees. Titles include "The Thief", "Beauty & The Bass", "Diamonds", "Party Piece", "Thief On the Prowl", and more! Nice notes, and some nicely funky crime themes, too! Nice gatefold cover, too!

Chad & Jeremy — Of Cabbages & Kings ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+ .... $19.99
A dream of a record from Chad & Jeremy – a fantastic bit of psychedelic pop produced by Gary Usher! The album's got quite a different feel than the rest of the duo's work – as their standard Brit pop style is augmented by lots of extra strings and woodwinds, super-baroque in a beautiful post-Pet Sounds sort of way. The songs are wonderful, too – with themes on the rise and fall of modern life, very much in a Kinks sort of style – with titles like "Busman's Holiday", "Rest In Peace", "Family Way", "Can I See You", and the extended "Progress Suite". Plus, the CD features 6 bonus tracks, a few previously unissued – including "Manners Maketh Man", "Cautionary Tale", "Sister Marie", and "Painted Dayglow Smile".

Don Cherry — Mu First Part/Mu Second Part/Orient ... CD
BYG/Charly (UK), 1970. New Copy 2 CDs .... $17.99 19.98
A trio of classic albums from Don Cherry – packaged in a heavy book-like cover, with lots of new notes too! On the first part of the set, Cherry really breaks out on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles include "Total Vibration", "Sun Of The East", "Brilliant Action", "Terrestrial Beings", "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". Orient is a beauty from Don Cherry – and one of his rarest records! This set was originally only ever issued by the Japanese branch of BYG Records in the early 70s, and it features 2 live performances from France, both of them great! Don's in a spare trance-like mode here – working with one trio comprised of bassist Johnny Dyani and percussionist Okay Temiz; and another trio with Han Bennink on percussion and Moqui on tambura. Tracks from both sets are very long and stretched-out – a mixture percussion, trumpet, flute, piano, and occasional vocals, often done in a globally expansive style. Titles include "Si Ta Ra Ma", "Orient", "Eagle Eye", and "Togetherness".

Stelvio Cipriani — La Polizia Chiede Aiuto/Sta A Guardare/Ha Le Mani Legate ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1973/1974/1975. New Copy .... $19.99
A trio of cool cop soundtracks from Stelvio Cipriani – all brought together in a beautiful package with a really unified feel! Cipriani's easily one of our favorite Italian composers for the cop/crime genre – as he's got a way of bringing sensitive sounds into play with driving action – in ways that are different from Morricone, Piccioni, or any of his other contemporaries! These tunes have a great balance between careful strings, warm themes, and more pointed action – often hanging their sound on a key element, such as a keyboard line, or off-tuned piano – and moving carefully forward with a really great ear for space and timing. Things are never sleepy, even when spacious – and the tunes ring out with a heavenly quality that could almost sanctify the acts of crime for which they were initially scored. CD features 3 tracks from La Polizia Sta A Guardare, 3 from La Polizia Chiede Auto, 9 from La Polizia Ha Le Mani Legate, and 9 more bonus tracks from the films – including some previously unreleased numbers. A really wonderful package too – with great graphics, notes in English, and a really beautiful look overall!

Stelvio Cipriani — Pierino Il Fichissimo ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1981. New Copy .... $16.99
That's a pretty darn goofy cover for this early 80s Italian soundtrack – a record that's done with some pretty goofy music to match! The great Stelvio Cipriani serves up plenty of his trademark keyboards – but this time around, they're used in a way that's more playful than some of his previous sensual scores for 70s romantic films – never too offbeat, but with a mix of whimsical themes and a few more mellow moments that recall the older sound of Cipriani. CD features 14 tracks in all!

Circuit Rider — Circuit Rider ... LP
Circuit Rider, 1980. New Copy (reissue).... $13.99
Dark and moody folk-psych from the American underground – a record once included on a list of "Top Ten Records Most Likely To Be Owned By A Serial Killer"! We're not sure if the set's as nasty as that might imply – as there's actually a heartfelt, almost earnest quality to the vocals – a slightly bluesy undercurrent, mixed with acoustic and electric guitar riffs – and almost spoken at times – or maybe not spoken, kind of "exclaimed" – as if the lyrics were coming to singer Thorn Oehrig right at the time he was recording them! All this makes for a great sense of reflection on the record – quite different than the posturing you might normally get on such a record – especially given that some of the tunes get really tripped out, with some really weird guitar parts. The set was recorded in 1980, but really feels like some lost biker psyche outsider set from the late 60s or early 70s – with heavy themes of drugs, death, and loneliness – all recorded with a rough-edged quality that further underscores the feelings in the music. Titles include "Limousine Ride", "Billy Bad Billy", "Red Dog", "Old Charlie Polecat", "Old Time Feeling", "How Long", and "Just For Today".

new James Clarke & Steve Gray — Hardcore/Expose/Let's Get Laid ... CD
Vocalion (UK), 1975/1977. New Copy .... $15.99
A trio of sex film soundtracks from 70s England – but done in a way that's a lot classier than you might expect! The sounds here aren't the usual bump-n-grind you might expect from US porno – and instead, the tunes are really great soundtrack numbers, penned with a distinct undercurrent of sound library work of the period – sweet jazzy moments, soft erotic themes, electric touches, and some subtle funky bits too – mostly used in very short cues for the film, but occasionally stretched out to more song-long levels as well. The package is a great discovery – given that we haven't seen the films or heard the music at all – and it features a whopping 34 tracks that include "Heavy Keyboard", "Tight For Time", "Tricky Hand", "On Stage", "Bicycle Girl", "Home Again", "Fiona's Theme", "You Turn My Legs To Water", "The Tension Mounts", and "House Of Straw".

Clarke Boland Big Band — At Her Majesty's Pleasure ... CD
Black Lion/Rearward (Italy), 1969. New Copy .... $19.99
One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight".

Impulse, 1965. Used 2CDs .... $9.99
A long overdue testament to the live genius of the mighty John Coltrane Quartet – captured at the legendary Half Note club in NYC – disc 1 recorded on a date in March 1965 and disc 2 on a date in early May of the same year! The set finds Coltrane plus McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on the kit working in a far more adventurous guise than many of the 60s studio sessions – stretching out incredibly on the half hour epic workout "One Up, One Down" and a beautifully loose run of "Afro Blue". The stylistic themes are carried through similarly on the second disc's long grooving "Song Of Praise" and an amazing "My Favorite Things", but stretching near or past the 20 minute mark. These long bootlegged recordings are now available on CD officially for the first time ever – complete with the original radio introductions and announcements!

Francesco De Masi — Big Game ... CD
Beat/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1972. New Copy .... $19.99
An excellent 70s Italian film score – penned for a political thriller, but handled with a fair bit of sweet and lovely themes! The album's one of the best we've ever heard from Francesco De Masi, and it nicely mixes his usual strong talents for action with a bit more warmth that befits the sexier side of the Italian cinematic spectrum. Sweet strings glide in alongside tighter electric basslines on some tracks – and others feature evocative woodwind bits, haunting piano, and a few more dramatic orchestrations – all wrapped up with really lovely sound throughout, and reissued here in a wonderful new package that really fits the music! There's a few vocal tracks – "Tomorrow Is A Foreign Land" and "Time On My Hands" – sung in English by Melody – and other titles include "The Story Of A Dream", "Running Against The Time", "Cape Town Harbour", "Soldiers Aboard", "Red Clouds", "Ending A Dream", "Suspect & Love", and "You'll Kill Her". Georges Delerue — L'Homme De Rio/Les Tribulations D'un Chinois En Chine ... CD
Universal (France), 1963/1965. New Copy .... $12.99
Two great soundtracks by Georges Delerue – both penned for Jean-Paul Belmondo films of the mid 60s! Les Tribulations D'Un Chinois En Chine has a really great style that mixes fake "Chinese" themes with more playful orchestrations – all in a mood that really fits that lightly comedic action of the movie, and which has an extremely evocative feel, even away from the screen! Strings are often arranged in playful ways, and mixed with odd woodwinds – not really authentically Chinese, but that's the appeal! L'Homme De Rio has a stronger Brazilian feel, as you might expect – one that's got bits of batucada, elements of bossa orchestrations, and some of the bolder, more dramatic moments we've come to expect from Delerue! Martin Denny — Exotic Love/Exotica Today ... CD
Liberty/Vocalion (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy .... $16.99
A pair of late 60s albums from Martin Denny – back to back on a single CD! Exotic Love is an overlooked gem from Martin Denny – cut during a range of later sides for Liberty Records, but somehow a standout, thanks to some soulful undercurrents in the music! The arranger is billed as Harold Johnson – who may well be the same cat leading the groovy sextet over on Revue Records at the same time – and the record has this subtle groove that's mighty nice – definitely an ear for some of the more soul-based instrumental styles of the 60s, with a nice bounce on the bottom that might almost make some of these cuts just right for older-style steppers. Instrumentation has a few exotic touches, but more piano than anything else – and titles include "A Beautiful Morning", "Love Exotic Style", "I Say A Little Prayer", "This Guy's In Love With You", "Love Is All Around", and "Voodoo Love". Exotica Today is an album that signifies its style right from the first track – which echoes Martin Denny's classic "Quiet Village", but which then rolls into a set of sprightly arrangements from Julius Wechter – who almost brings an A&M Records vibe to the album! Tunes are mostly Denny remakes of 60s instrumental themes, plus a few originals co-penned with Wechter – and there's some nice percussion bits that lurk in the background next to Denny's piano – which mostly rings out in the lead. Titles include "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Lara's Theme", "Strangers In The Night", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Patch Of Blue", "Promises", and "Snowflakes In Summer".

DJ Food — Kaleidoscope ... CD
Ninja Tune, 1999. Used .... $3.99
These guys have come a long way since their early series of jazz break tracks issued nearly a decade ago – to a style in which they blend together strands of soundtrack themes, older jazz, downtempo beats, and a heck of a lot more that's bubbling under the mix! This set features snippets of Lightning Rod, Ken Nordine, Quincy Jones, and Dudley Moore for starters – and tracks include "The Crow", "The Aging Young Rebel", "Cookin", "Break", "The Riff", "The Sky At Night", and "Full Bleed", done in collaboration with Bundy K Brown.

Ebonys — Sing About Life ... CD
Buddah/P&C, 1976. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
The Ebonys sing about life, and a host of other groovy topics too – in this lost soul treasure from the 70s! The set is one of only two albums ever cut by The Ebonys – a consistently great group from the 70s, as is testified by their constant popularity in our racks! The quartet has a 3 man/1 woman harmony sound that's very hip – often applied to righteous themes worked out in a heavy soul mode, and which sounds just as great on the ballads as it does dancefloor numbers. This second album's got an even sharper edge than their debut – thanks to production and arrangements from Tony Camillo – who gives the album some great undercurrents of funk, and a slightly righteous style that reminds us of some of Norman Whitfield's best studio work of the time. Vocals are wonderful – with really great harmonies that balance out beautifully – in ways that are much more unified than other girl/guy soul groups. Titles include "Neighborhood Gossip", "Mr Me, Mrs You", "One Thing On My Mind", "Sing About Life", and "A Love of Your Own".

Duke Ellington — Afro-Eurasian Eclipse ... LP
Fantasy, 1971. Very Good+ .... $14.99
One of Duke's last albums – and a great one! The session is right up there with some of Ellington's best late "suites" – an extended work that features writing around exotic themes, played by stalwarts like Paul Gonsalves, Harold Ashby, Rufus Jones, Cootie Williams, and Harry Carney – all coming together with more energy and imagination than you'd expect after all these years! The writing is fantastic, and the moods change strongly with each tune – running through numbers like "Afrique", "Chinoiserie", "Didjeridoo", "Gong", "Tang", and "Hard Way" – all of which sound as great as their titles might imply!

Exuma — Exuma II ... CD
Mercury/Repertoire (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $14.99
A perfect follow-up to Exuma's first album on Mercury – and like that one, a really rootsy blend of soul, funk, and other global sounds! Percussion and acoustic guitar dominate most of the instrumentation – just right for the rough-edged vocals on the set – in ways that help underscore some of the more righteous themes in the lyrics! The whole sound is a great summation of the musical journey that Exuma's taken from his Bahamian roots – and titles include "Damn Fool","Paul Simon Nontooth", "Fire In The Hole", and "A Place Called Earth".

Gianni Ferrio — Quei Disperati Che Puzzano Di Sudore E Di Morte ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1969. New Copy .... $18.99
A western soundtrack with a different twist – one that definitely shares some of the darker aspects of the crime score work by Gianni Ferrio! There's a few hard-driving themes, but most of the tracks are pretty spare, short, and moody – almost melancholy at points, with great spare instrumental lines on guitar or flute, occasionally augmented with a bit of strings – but in ways that differ from more familiar western modes. Surprisingly rich stuff – and this special edition from Digitmovies is loaded up – including the complete film score in mono as the first half, and the the stereo soundtrack as it was originally released as the second half of the disc – a really nice approach to give a more complete presentation! The score half of the CD includes 18 sequences off the Quei Disperati, and titles on the stereo soundtrack titles include "Uno Dopo L'Altro", "Notturno A Toiuca", "Oltre Il Confine", "Que Disperati", and "Alba Senza Speranza". 40 tracks in all!

Festival/Boris Midney — Evita/Empire Strikes Back – Disco Recharge ... CD
Harmless (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99
A pair of disco gems back to back in a 2CD set – with great bonus tracks too! First up is Evita, a loving take on the hit 70s musical – one that serves up all the best tracks in a sweet disco mode – and moves the sound from Broadway to the main floor of Studio 54! Festival present the material, but the key force here is disco maestro Boris Midney – who really helps craft some compelling keyboard-heavy grooves for the set – wicked dancefloor rhythms that have lots of sweet funky touches, topped with vocals that still retain some of the drama of the original! The approach worked surprisingly well with audiences at the time – and titles include "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Buenos Aires", "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You", "Rainbow High", "She Is A Diamond", and "High Flying Adored". CD features four more long bonus tracks – including two "Special Dance Music Version" mixes from promo 12" singles – plus "Don't Cry For Me Argentina (7" version)" and "Don't Cry For Me (Mexican 12" mix)". Next up is another great Boris Midney project – one of the few issued under his own name, and a cool disco-fication of the themes from The Empire Strikes Back! The set only features four tracks, but all of them are relatively long – and filled with cool instrumental touches on keyboards, guitar, and percussion – more than enough to blow similar Star Wars disco projects out of the water! Titles include "Yoda's Theme", "The Imperial March", "Han Solo & The Princess", and "Star Wars".

Nico Fidenco — El Che Guevara ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1969. New Copy .... $16.99
Che Guevara never sounded so groovy – thanks to some sublime soundtrack scoring from the great Nico Fidenco! The music is a bit more exotic than usual for Nico – some touches of pan pipes and acoustic guitar to signify the South American scene, but mixed with other elements that are pure Fidenco all the way – including little swells of sound that slink along slowly, rootsy percussion that gives a few moments a nice earthy touch, and other elements that are sometimes more sensual than dramatic – and we mean that in a good way! Most tracks are short, and trade a few themes back and forth throughout – and titles include "La Boliviana", "Los Federales", "I Regolari", "I Compagni Morti", "Los Federales", "La Ballata Del Che", and "La Leggenda Del Che". CD also features 5 bonus tracks too!

Serge Gainsbourg/Jean-Claude Vannier — Cannabis/Ce Sacre Grand Pere ... CD
Universal (France), 1970. New Copy .... $12.99
2 incredible soundtracks from Serge Gainsbourg – both of them from his best period of work! Cannabis is a tremendously funky set of tunes – and some real standout soundtrack material from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Serge is working here with some great help from Jean-Claude Vannier – the guiding force behind Melody Nelson – and Vannier brings some great grooves to the record, really going for those sexy riffs and breaks that make us love Gainsbourg's music so much! There's a bit of vocals, but the main focus is on the instrumentation – which shifts nicely from track to track, taking the themes in some very nice directions – all of them definitely up to the sexy standard of Serge. The score to Ce Sacre Grand Pere is included here as bonus work – and features tracks written by both Serge and Michel Colombier. The overall feel is more orchestral and traditionally soundtrack-styled, but there are a few really sly funky tracks that offer up Serge at his sexy best! The set's got 21 tracks in all, and titles include "Cannabis", "Jane Dans La Nuit", "Danger", "Avant De Mourir", "Cannabis-bis", "Piege", "I Want To Feel Crazy", "Le Deuxieme Homme", "Champetre Et Pop 1", "Nous Les Jericho", and "L'Herbe Tendre".

new Marvin Gaye — I Want You ... LP
Tamla, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An incredible record – quite possibly our favorite ever by Marvin Gaye! The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very much on the mind of Marvin during his troubled years of the mid 70s. The whole thing's beautifully put together – superbly orchestrated with just the right funky touches, and even a sweet bit of electronics to give the set a nice edge. An amazing album – one of those soul records that goes deeper and deeper than you ever thought pop music could go – filled with great tracks that include "I Want You", "After the Dance", "Come Live With Me", and "Since I Had You". Genius – pure genius!

Dizzy Gillespie — Portrait Of Duke Ellington ... LP
Verve, 1960. Very Good .... $7.99
A portrait of Duke, done by Dizzy – and one that's got a whole different feel than you might think! Gillespie's working here with arrangements by a young Clare Fischer – who takes Ellington's themes and recasts them with an even deeper sense of color and tone – one that pushes the already-modern themes of the numbers into a whole new realm of sound, and uses the horn passages to carve things out a lot differently than Duke might have done! The result is a wonderfully striking session – one with familiar melodies that unfold in a whole new way – and which showcases some great phrasing from Dizzy, over rhythms by a combo that features Hank Jones, George Duvivier, and Charlie Persip – playing alongside a group of larger horns. Titles include "Perdido", "Caravan", "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", and "Chelsea Bridge".

Marty Gold — Something Special For Movie Lovers/Suddenly It's Springtime ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy .... $16.99
A pair of 60s albums from one of the more dynamic bandleaders at RCA! Something Special For Movie Lovers has Marty Gold taking on a host of movie themes from the early 60s – numbers by Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mandel, and others – all given a twist that's somewhere in the territory of some of Marty's earlier hi-fi material, but which also respects the sensitivity of the original soundtracks as well. There's some inventive arrangements on the set – just what we'd expect from Gold – and titles include "Sylvia", "Goldfinger", "Funny World", "Polly's Song", "A Heart Must Learn To Cry", and "Emily". Suddenly It's Springtime features lush strings mixed with occasionally dynamic touches – definitely one of the mellower albums that Marty Gold ever cut, but a set that's still got a wonderful sonic range overall! Titles include "The Story Of My Love", "Portrait Of Jennie", "I Wish You Love", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Smile", and "Suddenly It's Springtime".

Jerry Goldsmith — Last Run – Original Soundtrack ... LP
MGM, 1971. Near Mint- .... $11.99
An excellent soundtrack to this early 70s thriller that starred George C Scott! Jerry Goldsmith has come up with some strong action themes that are very much in a Lalo Schifrin mode – mixing guitar, electric harpsichord, and strings with a harder-edged groove so that there's a lot of space in the overall blend of elements – allowing each one to step out nicely, identified on its own! Even the mellower tracks are great – with an airy feel that recalls some of Michel Legrand's best action scores at the end of the 60s – with colors that flow out and really give the record a sense of soul! Steve Lawrence sings "The Last Run" in a mode that recalls Matt Munro's performances on other thriller soundtracks – and other titles include "Claudie's Stockings", "The Trap", "Border Crossing", "Rickard Escapes", and "Double Cross".

Chico Hamilton — Sweet Smell Of Success ... LP
Decca, 1957. Very Good .... $29.99
A wonderful bit of cinematic jazz from the 50s – played by the Chico Hamilton group as part of the soundtrack! The combo was a key part of the LA scene at the time, but are oddly featured as a regular club act in the movie's New York setting – but we'll gladly forgive that geographic error, given that the music on the set is so great. The quality's a bit like some of the Hamilton Quintet work on World Pacific – but there's a slightly freer, more urgent feel here too – work that's sometimes somewhat driving, and beautifully blended from the guitar of John Pisano, clarinet of Paul Horn, cello of Fred Katz, piano of Carson Smith, and drums from Chico. Side one features a lot of short incidental cuts – like "Susan", "Cheek To Chico", "Jam", and "Night Beat" – and side 2 is an extended "Concerto Of Jazz Themes From The Soundtrack Of Sweet Smell Of Success".

Chico Hamilton/Elmer Bernstein — Sweet Smell Of Success ... CD
Decca/El (UK), 1957. New Copy .... $12.99
A jazz soundtrack double-header – one that features both the small combo and larger band version of the soundtrack to The Sweet Smell Of Success! The first half of the CD features the Chico Hamilton Quintet's album of music – a wonderful bit of cinematic jazz from the 50s. The second half of the CD features the full orchestral version of the Sweet Smell Of Success soundtrack – but done in a style that's almost as jazzy and swinging as the small combo one! Elmer Bernstein's at the helm here – and the music's a wonderful pastiche of modes that's right up there with his sublime score for The Man With The Golden Arm – done in a similar blend of driving jazz, somber moments, and some slightly more raucous touches! As with that album, the players are all great – and soloists on the album include Pete Candoli, Ted Nash, and Shelly Manne – west coast players despite the New York setting of the film, and playing here with a fair bit of grit in their groove. Titles include "The Street", "Hot Dogs & Juice", "Toots Shor's Blues", "Nite Spot Rock", "Love Scene", and "Out Of Darkness".

Harpers Bizarre — As Time Goes By ... LP
Forest Bay, 1976. Very Good+ .... $18.99
A rare post-Warner Brothers album from Harpers Bizarre – but done in a style that's still quite similar to their late 60s classics! Although the album's from the mid 70s, it's got a sweetly conveyed style that's focused strongly on the group's warm harmony style – and which mostly features, as before, songs and themes from years past – recast into a fresher, hipper LA-kind of style. The approach still has all the innocent charm of the group's key Warner albums – and the record's surprisingly free of AOR slickness or overdone production touches – and instead just relies on strong vocal harmonies and warmly jazzy arrangements to carry the sound. Titles include "Speak Low", "Banana King Louie", "That's The Way It Was", "Lullaby Of Broadway", "Society Strut", "Every Night", "Beechwood 4 5789", "Cowboy", and "As Time Goes By".

Eddie Harris — Mighty Like A Rose ... LP
Vee Jay, 1961. Very Good+ .... $4.99
Although Exodus to Jazz was probably the biggest album of Eddie's career, we've always been a bit more partial to this excellent LP, a terrific document of Eddie's work from his early days on the Chicago jazz scene. Featuring Eddie's good early group with Willie Pickens on piano, Jo Dorio on guitar, and Harold Jones on drums, the sound is a nice mix of soul jazz, hard bop, and slightly more exotic themes, with the kind of tinges that Yusef Lateef was putting into his work at the time. Cuts include "There Is No Time", "Mighty Like A Rose", and six others.

Eddie Hazel — Game, Dames, & Guitar Thangs ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy Gatefold .... $11.99 12.98
A massively tripped-out set of guitar-based funk – played to perfection by the legendary Eddie Hazel, best known for his work in the George Clinton P-Funk empire! The album offers a different side of Eddie's talents – one that's produced with a smoothly compressed California groove, in a mode that's almost an extension of some of the themes explored by Shuggie Otis on his own 70s albums – taken with a bit more of a P-Funk style. George Clinton produced the set with Eddie – and the tunes have a nice slow-stepping groove that really opens up the guitar solos wonderfully. The record kicks off with a massive cover of "California Dreamin" – but the whole thing's great, with a wonderfully unified feel throughout! Other titles include "Frantic Moment", "What About It?", "So Goes The Story", "Physical Love", and a great cover of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)".

Kenyon Hopkins/Duke Ellington/Alex North — Hustler/Paris Blues/Long Hot Summer ... CD
El (UK), 1961. New Copy .... $13.99
Back to back jazz soundtracks – the cream of the crop of the early 60s! First up is The Hustler – a killer jazz score from Kenyon Hopkins – a composer we can almost always trust to turn around a killer jass score! The work is mostly in a jazz ensemble mode – and moves between swinging segments, and sadder ones – those beautifully blue passages that Hopkins did so well in the early 60s – full of emotion, but in a really subtle, mature sort of way that also marked a shift in American cinema too – quite a change from the overblown emotion of a decade before, both in the music and on screen. Players include Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Phil Bodner on reeds; Joe Wilder on trumpet, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Hank Jones on piano, and Barry Galbraith on guitar – and titles include "Derby Time", "Dining Out", "Fast Buck", "Small Time Charlie", "The Loser", and "Minnesota Fats". Paris Blues is a moody introspective score, written for a 1961 film that starred Paul Newman as a frustrated jazz musician living in Paris. The "Paris Blues" theme is a dark, somber composition that is supposedly Newman's masterpiece as a jazz writer – and it works beautifully with the film's themes of frustration and unfulfilled desire. Ellington's at his best here, and apart from the main theme, the score also has great versions of classics like "Mood Indigo" and "Take The A Train", plus originals like "Nite", "Wild Man Moore", "Guitar Amour", and "Paris Stairs". Also features Louis Armstrong on one track! CD also features 7 more tracks from The Long Hot Summer – a more traditional score penned by Alex North, and featuring a title song by Jimmie Rodgers.

Sparkling modern soul from the lovely Phyllis Hyman – and an album that has the singer picking up the wonderfully smooth groove that had become the Philly International sound of the mid 80s. This format works surprisingly well for Phyllis – quite possibly more so than it did even for longer-running artists on the label – as it gives her a great showcase for the more sophisticated and adult sort of themes that were really emerging in her music, the kind of classy soul that Hyman helped forge strongly at the time. Titles include the great numbers "Old Friend", "Ain't You Had Enough Love", "If You Want Me", "Living All Alone", and a nice version of "What You Won't Do For Love".

A great statement from vibist Milt Jackson – one of his key solo sessions in a great 60s run of recordings away from the Modern Jazz Quartet! Like the classics that followed this one, the vibe is much more soulful than any of Milt's records with the MJQ – kind of an extension of the groove he hit on 50s dates for Savoy and Prestige, swung with an even tighter feel here in the Impulse Records setting! The backing's from a trio that includes Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and the tracks are short, but have some nice haunting themes that work well with the sensitive vibes of Jackson and piano of Jones. new Walter Jackson — Okeh Recordings Vol 2 – Welcome Home (with previously unreleased tracks) ... CD
Okeh/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
A tremendous second step for Chicago soul legend Walter Jackson – packaged here with a huge amount of bonus tracks as well! The core album is a sublime mix of new tunes and re-imagined standards – and a set that takes Walter Jackson into even more sophisticated soul territory than before! The record is proof that the up and coming soul artists of the 60s had a key place alongside the more established mainstream acts on the other side of the fence – as Walter's working here with arranger Riley Hampton to re-cast a number of familiar tunes in his cool Iceman soul mode – changing the themes, rhythms, and inflections of the tracks for a more contemporary soul market – and also interspersing them with a few great new songs of his own! The approach is amazing – far better than even Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson's work in a similar idiom – and the album features the sublime hit "Welcome Home", plus the Van McCoy tunes "Suddenly I'm All Alone", "Still At The Mercy Of Your Love", and "The Magic's Gone" – alongside versions of "Moon River", "Let It Be Me", "Imagination", and "My Funny Valentine". Added to the original album are 7 more rare tracks pulled from singles – some of the true gems in Jackson's 60s career for Okeh – with titles that include "Deep In The Heart Of Harlem", "Cold Cold Winter", "That's When I Come To You", "Special Love", "One Heart Lonely", "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", and "The Folks Who Live On The Hill".

Waylon Jennings — Dark Side Of Fame ... CD
RCA/Omni (Australia), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
Dark genius from Waylon Jennings' late 60s/early 70s years at RCA – a surprisingly wonderful batch of tunes that have the deep-voiced singer working through an array of contemporary themes! True, a number of the cuts here are country covers of mainstream hits – but Waylon's deeply personal readings really transform the songs magically – almost pointing the way towards years-later country variants from folks like Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson, delivered here with a subtlety that's kept them hidden for all these many years. And as with other great sets on the Omni label, there's a rich batch of unusual tunes in the mix, too – the kind of offbeat country gems that we've come to love Omni for, and really praise them highly for brilliant collections like this! 28 tracks in all – including "Rock Salt & Nails", a duet with Lee Hazlewood – plus "Just To Satisfy You", "For The Kids", "Yes Virginia", "Singer Of Sad Songs", "Beautiful Annabel Lee", "Delia's Gone", "Don't Play The Game", "Where Love Has Died", "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "The Road", "The Days Of Sand & Shovels", and "Destiny's Child".

Quincy Jones — Smackwater Jack ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1971. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A great bit of 70s electric work from Quincy – and probably his funkiest album ever! Quincy's really stepping out here from the straighter and spacier styles of earlier records – going for more of the dirty grooves he was cutting up for soundtrack albums, and hitting notes that were a lot more fitting for the blacksploitation era. The record includes the massive funky track cut "Hikky-Burr", which was the theme to the first Bill Cosby Show, and which has a sinister groove, and some wild shouted lyrics! Also features two more great themes – "Ironside" and "The Anderson Tapes" – both of which have a cool electric sound to them, and the nice title cut, which actually features Quincy on vocals! Other tracks include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "What's Going On", "Brown Ballad" and more.

new Ty Karim — Complete Ty Karim – Los Angeles' Soul Goddess ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $15.99
Wonderful work from Ty Karim – a singer who definitely lives up to the "soul goddess" promised in the title! Ty might not be the biggest name in California soul, but she's a hell of a great talent here – starting out in the 60s with upbeat Northern Soul groovers – then moving into the 70s with material that's even deeper, and a bit more sophisticated – laidback numbers that really show a maturation in style, and which are filled with wonderful twists and turns! Ty's vocals have a burning quality that's quite surprising, given her kittenish look on the cover – and as the themes get hotter, her singing gets even more righteous – making the whole package a really wonderful journey in soul. And although most of these numbers were issued (or recorded, but unissued) by tiny indie labels, they often have a very full, spacious approach to production – one that's really trying to hit the heights of Detroit or New York at the time. A good number of these cuts weren't issued at the time, and together with the rare singles, they really go a long way towards filling in the gaps in Ty's too-short career on record – further illuminated in the detailed notes from Ady Croasdell. Titles include "Lighten Up Baby", "Help Me Get That Feeling Back Again", "Only A Fool", "All At Once", "Lightin Up", "I Ain't Lying", "You Just Don't Know", "Natural Do", "I'm Leavin You", "All In Vain", "After Your Love Has Gone", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight", and "Don't Make Me Do Wrong".

Ty Karim — Wear Your Natural Baby (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $19.99
Wonderful work from Ty Karim – an LA singer from the 60s, just waiting to be rediscovered! A good number of these cuts weren't issued at the time, and together with the rare singles, they really go a long way towards filling in the gaps in Ty's too-short career on record. Titles include "Lighten Up Baby", "Help Me Get That Feeling Back Again", "Only A Fool", "All At Once", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight", "Wear Your Natural Baby", and "Don't Make Me Do Wrong".
(Pressed on heavy red vinyl, too!)

La Band Del Brasiliano — La Band Del Brasiliano Vol 1 ... CD
Cinedelic (Italy), 2013. New Copy .... $14.99
A sweet set of grooves from this cool Italian combo – served up with just the sort of retro style you'd guess from the cover! There's a strong influence here from older soundtrack modes – particularly Italian ones – no surprise, given that the album's on the film score reissue Cinedelic label, and really fits in with some of their classic work! The group take on a few older Italian soundtrack themes, and add in their own songs too – and they definitely have some of the Brazilian elements promised by their name, but in addition to bossa and samba, this also means some fuzzy psych as well – some of the heavier modes of the 70s generation, touched with a bit of cop/crime funk from the Italian scene of that era too. Vocals are in English and Italian – and titles include great remakes of "Metti Una Sera A Cena", "Femina Ridens", and "Goodby My Friend" – plus "Doping 2000", "La Donna Dei Miei Guai", "Gira Gira", "Clavinet Et Chase", "Drugs & Violence", and "Deep Throat".

Michel Legrand leads an american ensemble through a host of famous film themes from the 60s – like his own "Watch What Happens", plus "Manha De Carnaval", "Norma Jean's Theme", "Two For The Road", "Hombre", and "The Girl I've Never Met". The overall feel is mostly orchestral, but Legrand always adds in some nice touches, like occasional jazzy flourishes.

Michel Legrand — Les Trois Mousquetaires (Three Musketeers)/La Rose Et La Fleche ... CD
Universal (France), 1973/1976. New Copy .... $12.99
70s soundtrack work from the mighty Michel Legrand – his score for the famous Three Musketeers film directed by Richard Lester, and unissued music for the film Robin & Marian! The Musketeers music is quite dramatic – often filled with action, but with a few tender spots as well – and although somewhat more conventional in terms of scoring, there's still some of those sweeter Legrand touches we love so much – especially in some of the orchestral moments that echo his energy from Peau D'Ane. As you might guess from the story, there's a few period themes at points – although not as many as you might expect – and this balance continues in the Robin & Marian soundtrack from 1976, in music that would mostly be right at home in any other 70s film as well. CD features 24 tracks in all, with notes in French and English – and titles that include "Bustling Buckingham", "He Ain't Heavy He's The Cardinal", "Four Abreast", "Sword For Your Supper", "To Love A Queen", "Back From The Crusades", "Reunion", "The Attack", "The Chase Fugue", and "An Unforgotten Love".
