new Teca & Ricardo — Cade O Povo ... LP
Pulp Flavor/Dare Dare (France), 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Sweetly jazzy Brazilian grooves from the team of Teca & Ricardo – a lovely album recorded in France in the mid 70s, and unheard for years! The feel here is not that dissimilar from some of the recent work by Tom & Joyce, or classic work by the team of Jaime & Nair – Teca's lovely vocals upfront in the mix, often joined in harmony by Ricardo, with backings that are spare and which include lots of acoustic guitar. Post-bossa jazzy vocals with a slight electric twist – warm and intimate, but with lots of groove-oriented touches! Titles include "Saranda", "Estrela Da Cancao", "Cafune", "Trovaoda", "Pra Que Tanta Explicao", and "Le Son Hante".

AztecaPyramid Of The Moon (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $29.99
A really special record from a really special group – one of two sublime 70s gems from Azteca – a wicked blend of jazz, funk, Latin, and soul – all put together by a young Coke Escovedo! Coke's ostensibly the leader of the group, but there's also a richly collaborative feel going on – a style that brings together jazz players like Tom Harrell on trumpet, Mel Martin on saxes, George Muribus on Fender Rhodes, and Flip Nunez on organ – and Latin players like Victor Pantoja on congas, Coke Escovedo on timbales, and Pete Escovedo on added percussion. In fact, the set's a key early example of the strength of the Escovedo family – and like their best later efforts, the set really stretches out and pushes the boundaries of conventional genres. There's also some great guest work from Lenny White on drums, Mike Nock on keyboards, and Neal Schon on guitars – and vocals are by a range of singers who really keep things fresh. Titles include "Red Onions", "Mazatlan", "Whatcha Gonna Do", "Mexicana, Mexicana", and "Love Is A Stranger".

new Counts — Funk Pump ... LP
Aware, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 12.98
A funky funky classic from The Counts – and an album that has the group tightening up their sound from the Westbound years, but still keeping the groove plenty nice! There's a tight, bad-walking feel to most of the cuts on the set – one that almost comes across with a blacksploitation groove – especially as the album's basslines are all laid out in a hard-stepping groove, and topped off by plenty of wicked guitar work. Most cuts have vocals, and the lyrics have a Fatback-like love of the catchy chorus and funk-heavy theme. The album's worth it alone for the excellent cut "Tecalli" – a stretched out mellow instrumental with some great Kool & The Gang-esque floating trumpet over the top – but the whole thing's great, and other tracks include "At The Fair", "Dedicated Man", "Jazzman", "Magic Ride", "Short Cut", and "Flies Over Watermelon".

Counts — It's What's In The Groove (Love Sign/Funk Pump/bonus tracks) ... CD
Aware/Ace (UK), 1973/1974. New Copy .... $15.99
What's in the groove is plenty of funk – served up in an overstuffed package that includes all the tracks from The Counts' 2 albums on Aware, plus a few more bonus numbers! The best work here is from the mighty Love Sign album – quite possibly the most righteous work ever from The Counts, a move away from the heavier funk of their Westbound years, and a shift into some great jazz-based material! The vibe here draws heavily on the electric keyboard scene of the early 70s – with echoes of Lonnie Liston Smith's spaciness that trip through some of the album's best longer numbers – mixed with the harder grooves that The Counts first cut on their legendary singles in Detroit! Next up is work from the Funk Pump album – a record that's similar to Love Sign, but a bit more reigned-in, both in style and length of the tunes. There's a tight, bad-walking feel to most of the cuts on the set – one that almost comes across with a blacksploitation groove – especially as the album's basslines are all laid out in a hard-stepping groove, and topped off by plenty of wicked guitar work. Most cuts have vocals, and the lyrics have a Fatback-like love of the catchy chorus and funk-heavy theme! CD features 20 tracks that include the previously unissued "Chicken Pox" and "Counts Say Goodbye" – plus "The Munchies", "Count's Blues", "Jazzman", "Tecalli", "Flies Over Watermelon", "At The Fair", "I'm The Music", "Short Cut", "Sacrifice", "Love Sign", "Just You Just Me", "Funk", "Funk Pump", "Since We Said Goodbye", and "Dedicated Man".

Cravo E Canela — Preco De Cada Um ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $28.99
A great little Brazilian group from the 70s – one who continues the harmony styles of Sergio Mendes in the 60s, but takes the music into some groovy new directions! The sounds here are more samba than bossa – with guitar and percussion dancing nicely together in the rhythms as group members sing sweetly over the top – and both piano and keyboards adding in some nicely jazzy inflections to the groove, often with the more sophisticated phrasings you might expect in some of the EMI/Odeon work from earlier in the decade. Sivuca joins the group on both accordion and moog (!) – and the whole thing's got a sweetly-grooving style that's totally great! Titles include "Estatutos De Gafiera", "Loteca", "Amor Em Jacuma", " Iboru Iboya", "Beijo Baiano", "O Trem Atrazou", "Asa Branca", and "Fogo Pago".

Dandy's Dandy (Johnny Rodriguez Jr) — Dandy's Dandy – A Latin Affair ... CD
Latin Percussion Ventures, 1979. New Copy .... $6.99 11.99
An obscure but excellent session – recorded at the end of the 70s with some of the best players in the New York salsa underground! The music is extremely vibrant – and the styles of the tracks range from hard Afro-Cuban percussion grooving to tight Latin jazz in a classic mode – with instrumentation that ranges from pachanga-styled flute and violin, to some harder-jamming grooves with a lot more piano in the lead. Production has that raw, but clear sound that we love so much in the Latin Percussion albums of the time – a groove that's very different than that of Fania or Tico – and Sonny Bravo plays piano, Rene Lopez is on trumpet, Nicky Marrera is on timbales, Dick Meza plays flute, Eddie Montalvo plays conga, and Mario Rivera is on saxes. Includes great Latin Jazz versions of "Tune Up", "Manteca", and "April In Paris" – plus "Jo Ca Nic", "Son De La Loma", and "Konkoina".

Fabulous Rhinestones — Freewheelin (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Just Sunshine/River Man (Korea), 1972. New Copy .... $14.99
A hip little rock group from the upstate NY scene – and heck, they had to be hip, to record on the Just Sunshine label! The sound here has a bit of a funky rock approach, colored by a Band-like hominess – but thanks to some strong famous guests on the session, the instrumentation steps out way past the vocals on the best numbers – with help from a crack lineup that includes Toots Thielemans, Tito Puente, David Sanborn, and the Brecker Brothers! The core group are great, too – with the same sort of tight rhythms and soulful vocals we loved from their previous release – and titles include "Vicious Circle", "Freewheelin", "Down To The City", "What Becomes Of Your Life", "Do It Like Ya Mean It", and "Whitecaps".

new Dizzy Gillespie — Newport Years Volume V (aka Dizzy Gillespie At Newport) ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good+ .... $4.99
One of the best albums ever in Verve's classic set of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that captures the Dizzy Gillespie group of the decade in top live formation! The ensemble here is plenty hip – with a young Lee Morgan joining Dizzy on trumpet, and a host of other great players who include Melba Liston and Al Grey on trombones, Benny Golson and Billy Mitchell on saxes, and rhythm from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! Although big, the band often had the sharper groove of a small combo – and even when hitting some older moments from Gillespie's earlier years, they still kept a modern edge in their approach – thanks to arrangements by AK Salim, Tadd Dameron, Benny Golson, Quincy Jones, and Dizzy himself. Titles include "School Days", "I Remember Clifford", "Manteca", "Dizzy's Blues", "Cool Breeze", and "Doodlin".

MantecaRitmo Y Sabor – Rare Afro Cuban Percussion Sessions (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Essential, Mid 70s. New Copy .... $14.99
An insanely wonderful album of Latin percussion – the only album we've ever seen from Cuban percussionist Lazaro Pla, aka Manteca – a date recorded in Miami in the 70s, and filled with lots of raw percussion jams! There's a massive amount of bongo work here, mostly in a very spare setting – but some of the most compelling cuts also have a bit of funk too – added drums and basslines that kick things wonderfully, and make the record even more worth seeking out. Despite the 70s date, the whole thing has a raw descarga approach all the way through – just tight jamming in a real old school mode, without any vocals or polished production. Titles include the killer break tracks "Afro Funky" and "Cosas De Manteca" – plus "Abacua", "Son Montuno", "Rumbon En Casa De Cando", and "Gozando El Timbal". CD features 3 bonus tracks too, done with Nelson Padron – "Flaco Loco", "Algo Sabroso", and "Latino Loco".

new Jim McCarthy with Ron Sansoe — Voices Of Latin Rock – The People & Events That Created This Sound (paperback) ... Book
Hal Leonard, 2004. New Copy Book .... $4.99 24.95
A thick, photo heavy book dedicated to the greats of Latin rock – from the creative firestorm that burst from the 60s San Franisco Haight scene, up to Santana's surprise commercial juggernaut Supernatural in the late 90s. The book goes far deeper Santana, though, with reminiscences from a number of pivotal figures, and reintroduction to greats such as Malo, Azteca and many more, plus the funkier side of things with Mandrill and others. Definitely not an academic tome, either, this is a visual feast for both fans and neophytes. Large, kind of coffee table style paperback, beautifully illustrated with tons of amazing photographs (black & white). Forward by Carlos Santana.

Nu Band (Roy Campbell) — Relentlessness – Live at the Sunset ... CD
Marge (France), 2011. New Copy .... $14.99 16.99
Richly creative work from Nu Band – a hip ensemble that features Roy Campbell on trumpets and flute, Mark Whitecage on alto and clarinet, Joe Fonda on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums and percussion! There's a flowing, open feel here that's very much like some of Campbell's best albums recorded under his own name – a strong continuation of the 70s loft jazz spirit – sometimes handled with a loose, open, improvisatory quality – but one that still hangs together with a really coherent sense of soul. Other numbers have a rhythmic intensity that really fits the title – and the live setting makes for some great extended performances, too. Titles include "Camel Caravan", "Seventh Heaven", "Parallel Realities", and "Little Piece".

Salsoteca 70 — Salsoteca 70 ... CD
Salsa International, 1970s. New Copy .... $9.99
Not just 70s New York salsa, but a range of different styles – all packaged together with a focus that's mostly aimed at the Latin dancefloor ! Most of the work here is still relatively rootsy – pulled from the Salsa International/Mary Lou Records catalog – with a sound that's got a bit more grit than contemporaneous work from labels like Fania or Vaya. But that doesn't stop the music from being great – and the racks here really roll out with a very vibrant feel throughout! Titles include "I Regret" by Orchestra Capri, "Aprendelo Como Yo" by Bobby Quesada, "Puerto Rico Guaguanco" by Orchestra Tentacion, "Descarga 72" by Willie Rodriguez, "Salsa Tropical" by Orchestra Capri, "A La Memoria Del Muerto" by Dominica, "Sono Mi Guaguanco" by Raphie Martiniez, "Los Que Lloran Son Los Ninos" by Willie Rodriguez, and "Something Right" by Cucaracha Brass.

new Various — Elaste Vol 1 – Slow Motion Disco – Originals From The Cosmic Era ... CD
Compost (Germany), Early 80s. Used .... $7.99
A incredible little set of grooves that lit up early 80s Italian club scene – bubbling electro pop, pulsing post disco, and cosmic soul tunes compiled by DJ Mooner – a batch of nuggets originally spun in the famous Discoteca Cosmic! The tunes were all on the playlists during the heyday of that famous Italian club – a great mix of spacey, uncommonly warm synth grooves and cosmic funk featuring the Rah Band, Chocolate Star, Heaven 17 and more! Some of the most atmospheric club friendly grooves of the time! 11 tracks on the CD: "Electric Fling" by the Rah Band, "Mystery Man Remix" by Clive Stevens & Brainchild, "Dance On The Groove (And Do The Funk)" by Love International, "Crash (Monner's edit)" by Doctor S Cat, "I'm Your Money" by Heaven 17, "Basic" by Memory Control 1, "Oriental" by Peru, "This Is Me" by Chris & Cosey, "The Pop" by Chocolate Star and more.

Clare Fischer — Manteca! ... CD
Early 60s. New Copy .... Around June 26, 2013
Perhaps the best album ever by the fantastic arranger and keyboard player who did a lot of Latin work with Cal Tjader. This album's extra great because it's got him playing organ, which he does with totally cool effects on his own composition "Morning". Also has great versions of "Manteca" and "Favela", and a good Latin feel that was never matched on Clare's other LPs from the time. A very unique record, by an extremely unique talent!

Charlie Mariano — Charlie Mariano Plays ... CD
1953. New Copy .... Around June 12, 2013
Brilliant early work from Charlie Mariano – key proof of his genius, and one of the main albums we'd recommend by him! The album has Charlie coming of his years in the Boston scene – boppish at some level, but blowing with a raspy soulfulness that really opens up his horn into new territory – not Charlie Parker, not Lee Konitz, but a whole new space and sound of expression for the alto sax! The group features Stu Williamson on trumpet and Frank Rosolino on trombone – both players who bring a slight west coast feel to the record, but never in too-cool ways that dampen Mariano's sound! Titles include "Green Walls", "Chloe", "Manteca", "S'Nice", "You Go To My Head", and "Give A Little Whistle".

new Cesar Ascarrunz — Cesar 830 ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lost Latin funk from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and an album that may well blow away better-known work by groups like Malo, Azteca, or El Chicano! The album's near-perfect right from the start – and brings in plenty of New York elements to the groove, thanks to the inclusion of a heady amount of jazz alongside the soul, Latin, and funk elements in the grooves! The legendary Teo Macero produced and arranged – and really takes a lot of care in the studio to focus the overall energy of the tremendous talents on the record – players who include Hadley Caliman on flute and tenor, Steve Marcus on soprano sax, Benny Velarde on timbales, and Francisco Aguabella on congas – plus the trio of Cesar, Mark Levine, and Merl Sanders on keyboards. Most numbers have this really full, flowing groove – jazzy, but with a strong emphasis on the rhythms – and often touched with some great work on guitar that echoes the Santana-inspired sound of the generation, yet never in a rock way at all. Linda Tillery sings vocals on a few numbers, but the main focus is definitely instrumental – and the whole album's great – with cuts that include "See Saw Affair", "Azucar", "Descarga", "The Devil & Montezuma", "Gotta Get Away", and "Bridges".

Columbia/Big Break (UK), 1972. New Copy .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A crowning moment for the west coast Latin scene in the 70s – a wonderful Bay Area set that brings together some of the best talents working on that scene at the time! The set's got a great blend of modes – Latin soul, touches of funk, and plenty of the jazzy inflections you'd expect from a lineup that includes Coke Escovedo on timbales, Paul Jackson on bass, Lenny White on drums, George Muribus on Fender Rhodes, Tom Harrell on trumpet, and Victor Pantoja on congas! Vocals are by Pete Escovedo – who brings in a heady soulful sound to the set – and the vibe is a bit like work by Malo or El Chicano, but even more jazz-based overall! Titles include "Peace Everybody", "Empty Prophet", "Can't Take The Funk Out Of Me", "Azteca", "Ah! Ah!", and "Mamita Linda". CD features two bonus tracks – single versions of "Mamita Linda" and "Ain't Got No Special Woman".

new Dizzy Gillespie — Afro ... LP
Verve, 1954. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Dizzy Gillespie's finest Afro-Cuban moments! The material on this album has been issued under a few different titles over the years, but this is the early Afro package – the one that features a beautiful David Stone Martin cover, and a title that really gets at the Latin influences in the material. The centerpiece of the record is a side-long workout on the "Manteca" theme, played by Diz and a group that includes Lucky Thompson, Wade Legge, Charlie Persip, and Jose Mangual – all grooving hard in a sound that virtually defines the term of cubop! The other tracks on the album are great too – versions of "Caravan", "Con Alma", and "Night In Tunisia" – all done in a Latin jazz mode, with some nice flute solos by Gilberto Valdes.
(Yellow label Norgran pressing with a trumpeter logo & deep groove. Vinyl has numerous marks and plays crackles throughout. Cover has some seam splitting, wear, and some clear tape.)

A killer bit of Latin Soul – one of the few albums ever recorded by conga player George Guzman, working here with a very cool, very hip, late 60s ensemble! The group sport 3 trumpets, piano, bass, and some very strong percussion – plus vocals in both English and Spanish, which makes for a perfect back and forth mood to the set, handling both straight Latin and Latin Soul numbers with ease! Loads of great tracks – including "Diggin' Rice & Beans", "Manteca", "Really Bad Scene", La Banda Ya Llego", and "Winter Love". Nice, tight, and very very groovy.

new Various — Eccentric Soul – The Tragar & Note Labels ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/1970s. Used 2CD .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A double-length collection of work from two obscure Atlanta soul labels – the Tragar and Note imprints, both run by local producer Jesse Jones! Back in the day, Atlanta wasn't nearly as big of an outlet for soul records as it's become in recent years – so Jones' labels were key in showcasing under-exposed local talent in the city, a range of soul groups, solo singers, and funk combos – all produced here with a really fresh sound! Nearly every track here is super-obscure – and there's few southern soul cliches to get in the way of the music – no overdone blues, no Hotlanta disco, no Muscle Shoals copies – just honest-to-goodness indie soul at its best – full of life, vitality, and personality – all presented with the usual deep-digging Numero look at the artists in the notes. The package features a whopping 50 tracks in all – one of the biggest Numero collections so far – and together, they really tell the tale of this crucially overlooked scene – a key link between more familiar southern styles and rising Northern modes, all with a personality of its own. Titles include "All Because of You" and "Down In The Country" by Tee Fletcher, "The Hump" and "Tipping Strings" by The Knights, "Somebody Got A Help Me" and "Love is So Mean" by Richard Cook, "I'll Show You With Love" by Young Divines, "Watch The Dog That Bring The Bone" by Sandy Gaye, "Messing Around" by Bobby Owens & The Diplomats, "I Think It's Time" by Alice Swoboda, "Black Midnight" by JJ Jones, "That's How Much I Love You" by Eula Cooper, "Let's Get Funky" by Langston & French, "You Got A Spell On Me" by Bill Wright, "Strange Feeling" by Nathan Wilkes, "Shake Daddy Shake" by Eula Cooper, and "Nitecap" by L Daniels.

new Phineas Newborn — World Of Piano ... LP
Contemporary, 1961. Used .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Maybe not a "world" of piano, but a real classic from Phineas Newborn – a record that marks a harder, more soulful sound than some of his 50s work – shaking free from some of his flowery touches on the keys, and digging much deeper into the groove of his Memphis roots! The sound here is really tremendous – boldly leaping forth from the keys with a strength that's really surprising – but still sensitive enough to slide in a few more contemplative notes when the moment calls – sometimes while Newborn is still racing down the keys at breakneck speed! Rhythm on both sides is great – with Paul Chambers & Philly Joe Jones on side one, and Sam Jones and Louis Hayes on side two – and titles include "Cheryl", "Manteca", "Oleo", "Dahoud", "Cabu", and "For Carl".

Follow Me (France), Early 70s. Used .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
Wonderful warm Latin grooves from the west coast scene of the 70s! After the burst of New York Latin soul in the late 60s, the west coast groups answered with their own sound in the next decade – a blend of Latin, funk, jazz, and soul – played mostly by Chicano groups in LA, San Francisco, and other points west – a sublime blend of bass, keyboards, congas, and right-on vocals! The set is a fantastic collection of work in this tradition – featuring some of the best tunes by some of the movement's more famous acts, plus a few rarer numbers from left field that complement the set nicely. Titles include "Mazatlan" by Azteca, "Sabroso" by Malon, "Fried Neck Bones & Home Fries" by Coke Escovedo, "Rompe Con Todo" by Caceres, "Ritmo Del Corazon" by Sapo, "Maz Zacate" by El Chicano, "Caminando" by Chango, "Sibu Sibu" by Massada, and "Latin Boogaloo" by Malo.

A great idea for a compilation – a really cool set that focuses on the best days when jazz and rock were really combined together – that stretch in the late 60s and early 70s when horns were equally blended with guitars, in a groove that was plenty powerful overall! Some of the numbers here are familiar giants of the genres, and others are a bit surprising – and together, the music really does a great job tracing this evolving trend through its growth in the 70s! Titles include "Killing Floor" by Electric Flag, "Get It On" by Chase, "What Is Hip" by Tower Of Power, "Hold On" by Memphis Horns, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" by The Buckinghams, "Gonna Fly Now" by Maynard Ferguson, "Some Skunk Funk" by Brecker Brothers, "Vehicle" by Ides Of March, "In The Stone" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Non Pacem" by Azteca, "Goldmine" by Sons Of Champlin, and "New York" by Dreams.
