Our favorite album by this overlooked 70s soul group! The album's a real club stormer from the old days – a soaring blend of upbeat tunes with a sound that's righteous and smooth, and never cloying. These guys are kind of riding on the high of an Earth Wind & Fire kind of groove – missing the cliches of most other bigger funk acts, and really hitting a wonderful stride with the classic cut "We're On Our Way Home" – a joyous anthem that never gets old! The whole thing's pretty great overall, and other tracks include "Brand New Day", "Journey To The Light", and "Positive Thinking".

A Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis classic – and key proof that their pairing with singer Cherrelle was a mighty good thing! Cherrelle's got a voice that's perfect for the beat-heavy approach of the pair – light enough to dance around the rhythms, but bold enough with a presence all its own, too – a quality that helps keep most of these tunes pretty darn catchy, while still staying in front of some of the blander mainstream soul of the time. An incredible batch of Brazilian fusion – cut by keyboardist Manfredo Fest, and one of the few records he ever waxed in the US during the 70s! The record mixes Fest's soaring Brazilian groove with a tight soulful set of arrangements by Jerry Peters – a bit club-oriented, with a similar sound to some of the other records on the Tabu label at the time, but always sensitive to Fest's playing and writing – especially his Brazilian roots! The record features wonderful vocals by Roberta Davis – a very soulful singer who had a hip wordless style that was similar to Tania Maria's at the time – breezy, scatting, and very nice. Her work really makes the record sparkle, working perfectly with Fest's jazzy electric keyboards in a perfect way! Titles include "Jungle Kitten", "Koko & Leeroe", "Arigo", and "Who Needs It".

A dozen classics from Alexander O'Neal's legendary run on the Tabu label – nearly all of them produced by the team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, in that catchy yet soulful mode that made them the kings of chart soul at the time! The album's wonderfully tight, and wonderfully right on the money – held together like a pile of money dipped in honey – keyboards, bass, percussion, and vocals all sweetly grooving with that post-70s funky feel that the group virtually invented at the time! A great set of modern soul Rhonda Clark – one that really should have catapulted to super-stardom in the late 80s! Rhonda has the goods here – crisp, modern productions that are as strong as any R&B circa '89 – a diverse, attractive voice and a bunch of great songs. We can't fathom why it didn't top the charts at the time, but it's really strong stuff! Between Friends has production on Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the masterful single "State Of Attraction"– and their on board as musicians on some other tracks, too – with production by Randy Ran, Chuck Howard and Jellybean Johnson. Titles include "Does That Make A Man", "I Love Your Body", "Sugar", "Stay Here, Stay Near", "Now Matter How", "Sugar" and "Between Friends". This top notch CD version comes with deluxe packaging and booklet – it includes 6 alternate mixes of the classic "State Of Attraction" – 12" club mix, dub version, jazz version and more.

A beautiful lost bit of Exotica from the early 60's! Michel Magne recorded this "adventure in exotic sounds and percussion" in the Barclay Studios in Paris – as one of the excellent albums he cut in France before moving onto more famous soundtracks – and the set's got a wonderful mix of percussion, woodwinds, vibes, and piano – but also features tiny bit of tape manipulation, which gives the whole thing an even groovier sound! The feel is way cooler than the usual exotica groove – key proof of Magne's early musical vision – and titles include "Congo", "Tabu", "Sahara", "Two Silhouettes", and "Tropical".

Cosmic grooves and spacey post disco compiled by Dompteur Mooner – a great third volume of the Elaste series from Compost Records! The soul if disco splintered in the cosmos in the early 80s, soaring strings giving way to funky synths, proto-techno programming and all around galactic feel in the clubs of Europe and pretty much all around the world – and this set pulls together the widest range yet! Definitely not disco in a conventional set, but spacey synth funk and influential club grooves from the early 80s underground that sounds great today! Includes "Take A Chance (Dompteur Mooner Edit)" by Queen Samantha, "Urth" by Mobius, "Beats of Love" by Nacht Und Nebel, "Allein (Original Version)" by Tabu, "Beuys Boys" by Pollyester, "Jamacia Running" by The Pool, "Powerslide" by Mythos, "Africa (Dub Mix)" by Key Of Dreams and more. 14 tracks on the CD version.

Musicians and listeners arrived in London with plenty of cultural baggage on hand – influences from the Caribbean, West Africa, and India too – plus other smaller scenes that once fell under the British banner, all now the fuel for the cultural fire that was happening in England! The title here tells plenty about the music being made in this newly-formed scene – bits of African highlife, Jamaican calypso, American jazz, Cuban Latin, and more – all filtered into the modernism of the 50s, and given a new twist that was decidedly urban as well. The package may well be the most impressive so far in this legendary series – and is certainly the one that moves the farthest past any sort of easy expectations or cultural conventions. The album's filled with tunes pulled from obscure albums of instrumental music from Southeast Asia, circa late 60s/early 70s – mod and swinging instrumentals that are going for a serious western pop kind of sound. There's lots of different styles running through the mix – from guitar or organ-based instrumentals, to soundtrack-type numbers with a John Barry or Morricone feel, to other tracks that mix together Latin rhythms and other groovy 60s touches. There's not a lot known about most of the artists on the set – but that also is one of the things that makes it pretty darn compelling! The instrumentation's mostly from keyboards and bass pedals – and the vocals are a bit buried in the mix, but there's some mellower tunes that have some honest leads with an indie sound. A beautiful lost bit of Exotica from the early 60's! Michel Magne recorded this "adventure in exotic sounds and percussion" in the Barclay Studios in Paris – as one of the excellent albums he cut in France before moving onto more famous soundtracks – and the set's got a wonderful mix of percussion, woodwinds, vibes, and piano – but also features tiny bit of tape manipulation, which gives the whole thing an even groovier sound! The feel is way cooler than the usual exotica groove – key proof of Magne's early musical vision – and titles include "Congo", "Tabu", "Sahara", "Two Silhouettes", and "Tropical".

An all-instrumental set from Mose Allison – one that drops out his familiar jazz vocals, and really brings a nice focus to his energy on the keys of the piano! Given that Mose really got his start as a sideman in other combos during the 50s, the selection's no surprise – and if you've only heard Allison's better-known numbers with singing, you'll really be floored here at his skills as an instrumentalist – particularly in the way he manages to play the piano with deep-down roots, yet also hit some stunningly modern tones as well! Accompaniment is by Addison Farmer on bass, plus either Ronnie Free or Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Dinner On The Ground", "Crepuscular Air", "Mule", "Creek Bank", "Town", "Devil In The Cane Field", "The Minstrels", "Moon & Cypress", "Carnival", and "Mojo Woman".

Great stuff – and possibly the best album ever by this classic harmony soul group! The style is wonderful – with Brenda's sweet voice in the lead, and backing by the all-male Tabulations. The overall approach was used by Gladys Knight & The Pips for years, but we've always liked Brenda's stuff better – because it's got a deeper soul approach, and much richer harmonies. This CD features all the tracks from the group's rare 1971 album, plus a number of singles that weren't on the record. The record's got a way of focusing energy, yet letting each player state themselves clearly and cleanly – almost a perfect small group variation of the larger jazz modes of a generation before – carried out here by Cohn and Sims with a great balance of tone and timing, modernism and swing! There's an excellent rhythm group on the date – Mose Allison on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulus on drums – who almost bring in a slightly soulful undercurrent, which works especially well on Sims' solo moments. A spare and sweet little set from the team of Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke – one of the best of the east coast chamber jazz groups of the mid 50s! Forget the "rock" in the title, and just focus on the "funk" – because this set of tracks is a massively heavy batch of Nigerian numbers from the 70s – all with the same solidly soulful feel as more familiar Afro Funk work of the time! There's a definite emphasis on guitars – which are often used in freaky and fuzzy ways, to offer up a more tripped-out take on the music than you might expect – but they never go too far into mainstream rock territory, certainly not in an Anglo sort of way. Most of the rhythms are still very much in an Afro Funk mode – but again a bit more tripped-out than usual – sometimes with a nice sense of space and laidback timing, which is often augmented by production techniques that pull out some of the cooler aspects of the music. There's a fair bit of keyboards too, often used in ways that are similar to the guitars – and in a way, the vibe here is often in the mode of British cross-cultural groups of the post-colonial years – like Cymande or Demon Fuzz, both of whom would sound right at home here.
