Afrika Bambaataa & James Brown — Unity (Parts 1 - 6) ... 12-inch
Tommy Boy, 1984. Near Mint- (pic cover).... $4.99
Six different mixes of this meeting of two greats. Admittedly not as entirely dope as it could have been, but still as nice as a Soul Sonic Force records with backing by Doug Wimbish and Keith LeBlanc. Also, there's a few interludes with James Brown saying a few words about the record. Nice cover with a photo of Afrika and the Godfather holding hands in unity!

Alan Bown — Outward Bown ... CD
Decca/Grapefruit (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99
Possibly the rarest album by UK outfit pf Alan Bown! The group is named for founder, trumpet and flugelhorn player, and they got around bit earlier in an R&B-styled mode, then billed as The Alan Bown Set. Starting with this cool record, they committed to more of a psychedelic pop mode. That serves them well! The tunes are infectious, skewing the the accessible side of the psych sound. The drums hit hard and there's both punchy electric and chiming acoustic elements – usually with groovy organ and huge melodies. Outward Bown has never had much luck in the market place, and this 2CD UK edition aims to remedy that – with the full stereo version plus the bonus track "Little Lesley" on disc one, plus the full mono version with a few additional bonus tracks on disc two. Includes "Toyland", "Mutiny", "Sally Green", "Love Is A Beautiful Thing", "Violin Shop", "You're Not In My Class", "Technicolor Dream", one of the most unique covers of "All Along The Watchtower", "My Girl Of The Month May" and more.

Georges Arvanitas — Soul Jazz ... LP
Columbia/Vadim (France), 1960. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99
One of the most hard-hitting albums ever cut by pianist Georges Arvanitas – an early effort that's all soul jazz all the way through! Although Arvanitas is best known as a committed modernist, especially in later years, this sweet early 60s session is a stone cooker in the best mode of Blue Note dates of the time – tight, swinging, and perfectly poised with just the right space for some excellent solos from Francois Jeanneau on tenor, Bernard Vitet on trumpet, and Arvanitas himself on piano – all grooving in a style that would make the Jazz Messengers proud, but also one that's got some key touches of postwar Parisian jazz too. Bass is by Michel Gaudry and drums are by Daniel Humair – and titles include "Oblivion", "This Here", "Poco Loco", "Bouncin With Bud", "Bohemia After Dark", and "Mister X".

Masaki Batoh — Brain Pulse Music ... LP
Drag City, 2012. New Copy .... $19.99
Minimalist drone from Masaki Batoh of Ghost – sparely beautiful and somewhat ominous soundscapes from ever-creative experimenter – and the way he created these sounds is kinda mindblowing! Brain Pulse Music is literally what Masaki Batoh has here. Essentially, he dreamed up a machine that could convert radio-transmitted brainwave/EKG data into a more audible frequency. He then found some people to make that happen! Also in the mix here are both peaceful sounding and kind of clattering bits of more traditional Japanese instrumentation – drums, gongs and bells. Dreamy, haunting stuff from a master experimentalist! Includes "Kunamo Codex 1", "Eye Tracking Test", "Kumano Codex 2", "Kumano Codex 3", "Kumano Codex 4", "Kumano Codex 5" and "Aiki No Okami".

Teddy Charles — Three For Duke ... LP
Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good .... $19.99
Nice moody set of tracks written by Duke Ellington, and played by a trio that features vibist Teddy Charles, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and pianist Hall Overton. All three men are committed modernists, and they play here without drums, and with a lot of space to lay down some dark edgey arrangements of tracks like "The Mooch", "Sherman Shuffle", and "Main Stem". Moody stuff, with a very spooky sound at times, and some excellent interplay between the vibes and piano.

Clark Sisters — Sing Sing Sing! ... LP
Dot, 1958. Very Good- .... $1.99
A quartet of lovely ladies, serving up their renditions of classics from the swing era – all done in sweetly scatted versions! Most numbers begin with these great wordless vocal passages that establish the tunes before the main lyrics come in – setting the scene like the horns in a larger group, but sounding even more wonderful through the sweet harmonies of the group. The format's a great one – quite unusual for the time, and very different than the approach used by other female vocal combos of the 50s. And thanks to some hip arrangements from Bob Bain and Bud Dant, even the older tunes on the record crackle with a new sense of life. Titles include "Opus One", "Music Makers", "Little Brown Jug", "Don't Be That Way", "You're Driving Me Crazy", "String Of Pearls", and "Marie".
(Vinyl has a few clicks and pops. Cover has a small split on the top seam, yellowed tape on the spine and bottom seam, and light wear.)

Vikter Duplaix — Bold & Beautiful ... CD
BBE (UK), 2006. Used .... $14.99
A great title for an equally great little record – one that marks a whole new stage of genius for Philly soul maestro Vikter Duplaix! Vikter's been making our world plenty brighter with his music for a number of years, but with this record he earns our respect even more – by smoothing out some of the rougher edges of earlier sides, and going for a focused, positive sound that's really tremendous! There's a sense of presence here that's undeniable – not just the role of a hip singer who showed up on many singles at the start of the century, but a focused artist committed to changing the world through the power of his music. Duplaix is working here with a number of different producers – most notably James Poyer, but also Michael Angelo Saulsberry, Ron Trent, Sebastian Arocha Morton, and Omar Edwards – but throughout the set, the sound is very unified and very personal, not the sort of scattershot, studio-hopping work that you'll get in most of the R&B mainstream these days. A few tracks here appeared on the earlier Stimulation EP – but the album's the full presentation of the message that started with that one – featuring 12 tracks that include "Make A Baby", "Pure", "Another Great Love Gone By", "A Life Worth Living", "For Life", "Stimulation", "The Way That I Feel", "In The Middle Of You", "I See The Sun", "Nothing Like Your Touch", "Fade It", and "Temple Of Thoughts".

Dusty Groove T-Shirt! — 70s Lady – Yellow Shirt, Navy Blue Ink (WOMENS MEDIUM) ... T-Shirt
Dusty Groove Gear, 2003. New Copy .... $12.99
One of the slinkiest shirts we've ever offered – featuring a wistful-looking lass with her hair in the breeze and a sultry twinkle in her eye! The image is rendered with a few simple lines – falling together, almost accidentally, to reveal this lovely lady caught in a moment of private contemplation. Thinking about her latest purchase from Dusty Groove? Perhaps. Or perhaps a lost love from days done, never to be returned. This is a ladies' fit with a fitted body, shorter length and tapered sleeves.

Dyson's Faces — Dyson's Faces (1977 – blue cover) ... LP
DRR, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $2.99
The second incredible album from Dyson's Faces – one of those underground 70s groups that should have been huge! The set's got a soaring sound that's even more righteous than the group's debut – a quality that glows wonderfully with the quartet's mix of male and female voices – a sound that almost reminds us a bit of Voices Of East Harlem at times. Backing is by the Hard Times Band – a tight combo who groove hard on the more uptempo numbers, and lay back nicely on the mellower ones – just throwing in some licks here and there on guitar or keyboards next to the warmer harmony vocals. The voices are an especially great part of the record, and really sparkle with a sound that's even fresher than most other groups from the time – a sound that shows that Dyson's Faces wasn't just one of those funk groups who happened to also be able to sing – but a strongly committed soul outfit who really put a lot of energy into their music! Titles include "This Time It's Gotta Be Love" in both vocal and instrumental versions – plus "Till I've Got This Feelin Of Love", "Try Me Baby", "You & Me", "Working My Way To Something Better", and "Cry Sugar" – as well as "Welcome To All This Love Again" and "Don't Worry About The Jones", which both appeared on the group's first album.

Heaven & Earth — Refuge ... LP
Ovation/Lion, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $13.99
A beautiful early 70s psych folk set from the angelic vocal and songwriting duo of Pat Gefell and Jo D Andrews – their Refuge album for Ovation in 1973 – highlighted by their gorgeous vocals, but committed with lovely, lightly soaring arrangements! Save for a solid cover of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin penned "Sixty Years On", Gefell and Andrews wrote the songs here, and it's remarkably strong stuff! The duo vocals and harmonies are especially sweet. The Chicago-based production wisely leaves ample space in the arrangements for them to sort of loosely, emotively embellish with their voices – with string arrangements by co-producer George Andrews and an impressive roster of session players including bassist Phil Upchurch, drummer Don Simmons and percussionist Bobby Christian. Includes "Jenny", "Voice In The Wind", "To A Flame", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", "Refuge", "Song For Craig", "A Light Is Shining", "Feel The Spirit" and more. Heavy vinyl and cover – and features a great insert with notes!

J Dilla (Jay Dee) — Donuts – (8 X 7" box set – with bonus tracks) ... 7-inch
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy 8 x 7 Inch .... $42.99
The 8 X 7" box set version of this classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. Extra Bites bonus 45 includes "Signs", plus "Sniper Elite" and "Murder Goons" with Ghostface & MF Doom.
(8 X 7" box set edition – with bonus tracks not on the original release. Please note: demand was far greater than the number released to retailers – so all shipments were allotted – and we were lucky to get just a few. Quantities extremely limited!)

Kwick — Kwick/To The Point ... CD
Capitol/Expansion (UK), 1980/1981. New Copy .... $16.99
A pair of killers from Kwick – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Kwick – sweet 80s groove from a quartet who were once known as The Newcomers, and recorded some Memphis singles for Stax – but who here reemerge more than fully-formed – leaping into the new decade with an amazingly rich sound! Given the group's previous work, the vocals here are really wonderful – trained on old school harmony modes, and refitted to some more contemporary rhythms – yet all in a way that never loses the depth that made them so great in the first place. Although never super-huge, the group have a quality level that rivals the best of their contemporaries in this mode from the time – making this debut a stone gem to rival the best from acts like Switch or Tavares. Titles include "I Want To Dance With You", "Can't Help Myself", "Serious Business", "Let This Moment Be Forever", and "Tonight Is The Night". To The Point is a wonderful second set from Kwick – a bit more grooving than their first, with added emphasis on funky bass bits and keyboards – yet a set that's still filled with all the great vocals from before! It's not easy to harmonize tightly while stepping along with a lively rhythm, but Kwick make it all sound perfect here – super-tight, yet never uptight – in a rare blend that few other groups could ever reach in such a setting! The whole album's a charmer – and titles include "Split Decision", "Nightlife", "You're The Star Of My Show", "You're The Kind Of Girl I Like", "No Winner No Loser", and "I Choose You".

George Lewis — Complete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint & Soul Note (Shadowgraph/Imaginary Suite/Homage To/Change Of Season/Dutch) (5CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1977/1979/1985/1987. New Copy 5CDs .... $29.99
Amazing music from trombonist George Lewis – five different albums that each show a different side of his talents! First up is Shadowgraph 5 – a great early Black Saint, and a key example of the way the AACM spirit thrived overseas, thanks to the efforts of labels like this! The work is quite serious and experimental – almost compositional in nature, and definitely heading towards the AACM promise of "Great Black Music" – and other players include Roscoe Mitchell on saxes, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, Douglas Ewart on bass clarinet and other reeds, and Abdul Wadud on cello. One track even has Lewis playing the Moog in addition to trombone and tuba! Imaginary Suite is a duet with Douglas Ewart – and features Lewis both on trombone and electronics – and even his trombone at times is "electronically modified", making it a really cool-sounding instrument. Ewart plays a bit of percussion – plus bass clarinet and flute – and often hits some electronically-sensitive sounds with his reeds, making the album a really compelling interplay between acoustic and electric elements. Homage to Charlie Parker is hardly the bebop outing you might expect from the title, and instead a set of complicated work that's heavily in the AACM tradition! Side one features "Blues" – an investigation of older blues harmonics, but done in a very freeform, experimental way – with tenor trombone from Lewis, piano from Anthony Davis, bass clarinet from Doug Ewart, and moog from Richard Teitelbaum. Change Of Season is a killer tribute to the music of Herbie Nichols – played by a committed batch of modernists who are clearly inspired by his genius – including Misha Mengelberg on piano, Steve Lacy on soprano sax, and Han Bennink on drums. The set's completed by Dutch Masters – Lewis' last album for the label, done with a compelling lineup that includes Misha Mengelberg on piano, Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Ernst Reyseger on bass, and Han Bennink on drums – but in a style that's very different than the previous Change Of Season album.

Les McCann & Eddie Harris — Swiss Movement ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ .... $4.99
The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some breakout solos that show that all players are still deeply committed to a strong jazz sound. Titles include "Cold Duck Time", "The Generation Gap", "Kathleen's Theme", and their great version of "Compared To What", with the famous vocal by Les that made the track a soul jazz vocal hit!

Motorhead — Iron Fist ... LP
Mercury, 1982. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Motorhead tearing it up in the early 80s and arguably hitting their absolute peak – the final album with the classic trio lineup of Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor – capping off one of the most trailblazing periods for any band in rock & roll history! Iron Fist is as unrelenting and stubbornly gruff as the preceding Overkill and Ace Of Spades LPs, a loud and clear statement that this band was committed in full to the sound they created. Includes "Iron Fist", "Hert Of Stone", "I'm The Doctor", "Loser", "Shut It Down", "Speedfreak", "(Don't Need) Religion", "Bang To Rights" and more.

Nutty Squirrels — Bird Watching ... LP
Columbia, 1959. New Copy (reissue).... $6.99
Wild! The Nutty Squirrels were an obvious attempt to cash in on the success of Alvin & The Chipmunks during the late 50s – a studio-trickery session handled with the voices of Don Elliott and Sascha Burland – but to our ears, honestly, the album's a lot better! You see, both Elliott and Burland had their jazz chops down pretty tight – and the record is less an album of novelty pop numbers, than it is a set of jazz vocal tunes, scatted along over small combo backing, with the voices sped up on tape so that they sound like a pair of jazzy squirrels! The album's got none of the cloying aspects of The Chimpunks' work – and if you can get past the squeakiness of the vocals, you'll actually find the record pretty appealing from a jazz perspective. Titles include "Bob White", "That's Owl, Brother", "Yardbird Suite", "Flamingo", "Bird Watching", "Sparrow In The Treetop", and "Didee Bird". Imagine Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert locked in a studio with a tank of helium – and you'll get the idea!

Samuel Purdey — Musically Adrift ... LP
Tummy Touch, 1999. New Copy .... $19.99
A massive bit of blue-eyed soul – recorded on the London scene of the late 90s, but put together with a vibe that takes us back to early 70s LA! The sticker on the front promises links to Steely Dan and Jamiroquai – and the sound of the record definitely lives up to that sound – all the best warm production you'd hear from the best mainstream acts of the 70s, but fitted with a 90s style that's a bit leaner overall – smart enough to appreciate all the best aspects of the older music, yet distanced enough not to get trapped in its cliches! The whole thing's the grooviest set of soft rock we've heard in years – a killer little record that's filled with great hooks, soulful instrumentation, and loads of warm harmonies from the lead duo – on titles that include "Late For The Day", "Lucky Radio", "Valerie", "Whatever I Do", "I Can't Move No Mountains", "Only When I'm With You", and "Soon Comes Another".

Ike Quebec — Heavy Soul ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used .... $7.99
Heavy soul from Ike Quebec – one of Blue Note's greatest players of the 78 era in the 40s, stepping out here on one of his brilliant comeback sets from the early 60s! The set features Ike blowing in an all soul jazz mode – working with a quartet that includes some great work from organist Freddie Roach – swinging here in a great straight ahead mode, and really pushing Ike to lay out some of the best solos of his later Blue Note years. There's a few tracks on the set that step out in a tight modal jazz groove – organ vamping as Ike blows away – and titles include "Heavy Soul", "Que's Dilemma", "Acquitted", and a very spooky version of "Nature Boy".

Sun Ra — Cosmos ... CD
Inner City, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.95
One of the best-remembered Sun Ra albums from the 70s – a really cool little session that features Ra playing the unusual "rocksichord" all the way through! The instrument's a very weird one – kind of like a messed-up electric piano, with lots of cool broken notes and a weird fuzzed-out tone – one that almost feels like a guitar's being fitted into a keyboard, with almost psychedelic results! Ra's use of the rocksichord gives the album a really eerie, outer spacey sound – one that mixes strongly with more familiar jazz lines from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Danny Thompson on baritone, and Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet. Titles include "The Mystery Of Two", "Interstellar Low Ways", "Cosmos", "Moonship Journey", "Neo-Project #2", and "Jazz From An Unknown Planet".

St Germain — Tourist (remastered edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 2000. New Copy .... $12.99
Killer jazzy grooves from the French jazz house scene – and hands down one of our favorite albums of the 00s! St Germain take a Blue Note 70s sound as their base – with lots of sweet Hammond riffs, mellow Fender Rhodes licks, funky flute lines, and spacey percussion – then they add in some tight soulful house rhythms, with a very deep deep deep groove! The result is some of the best jazzy house of their time – and the record is the kind of album designed to put Blue Note back on the map as one of the most groove-committed jazz majors in the world. Killer stuff all around – and with the tracks "So Flute", "Montego Bay Spleen", "Latin Note", "Rose Rouge", "La Goutte D'Or", "Pont Des Arts", "Sure Thing", and "What Do You Think About . . ."

Wayne Shorter — Soothsayer ... LP
Blue Note, 1965/1979. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A great Wayne Shorter session from the mid 60s – recorded then, but not issued until 1979, for some incredibly unexplained reason – especially given the strength of the set! The group is distinctly modern, and features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto, and McCoy Tyner on piano – all of who were committed to heavily pushing the boundaries of their playing at the time. Added to the mix is the youthful Tony Williams on drums, fresh from work with Miles Davis, and playing with an incredibly free hand on the kit – plus the great Ron Carter on bass. The resulting mix of tracks is a beautiful example of how these mid-60s Blue Note sessions could keep firmly in touch with modern developments in jazz, yet never lapse into the kind of sloppiness that could sometimes ruin sets like these on other labels – always with a keen sense of timing and rhythm, and a sharpness that made Blue Note's "new" newer-sounding than most. Titles include "Lost", "Angola", "The Big Push", and an amazing jazz take on Sibelius' "Valse Triste"!

Michal Urbaniak — Ecstasy (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Marlin/Clinck (Japan), 1978. New Copy .... $28.99
One of the most soul-based albums in Michal Urbaniak's catalog – a session originally done with TK records during the height of their dancefloor years, fitted up with some really great clubby grooves! The sound here is a mix of fusion and soul – done in a way that still gives Urbaniak plenty of room to solo on violin, sax, and keys – but which also sets up a warmer groove overall and really lets the vocals come center stage. Urszula Dudziak sings on about half the tracks – and other vocals are by Kenyatta and Calvin Brown – and the jazzy inflections of the tune really set this apart from lots of the other Miami disco on Marlin, giving the record a much deeper feel overall, and a quality that's held up very nicely through the years! Dark edges mix with warmer moments nicely, almost in a Roy Ayers way – and titles include "A Day In The Park", "Just A Funky Feeling", "Body Rub", "Ecstasy", "Creation", and "Want's Ta Make You Feel Good".

Pharez WhittedFor The People ... CD
Origin, 2012. Used .... $4.99
A smoker from this hip Chicago trumpeter – quite possibly his best album to date, and a record that sparkles with original compositions from Whitted! All tracks are by Pharez, and they're warmly presented by a great group that also included Eddie Bayard on tenor and soprano sax, Bobby Broom on guitar, Ron Perrillo on piano and Fender Rhodes, Dennis Carroll on bass, and the kicking Greg Artry on drums – a player whose energy here really snaps into a great groove. The set's a great example of the soulful straighter jazz going on in Chicago – a whole world of music that's often not as exposed to the world as the city's avant scene, but which is equally impressive. Titles include "Sad Eyes", "Freedom Song", "Another Kinda Blues", "Watusi Boogaloo", "If They Could Only See", and "Venture".

Recent recordings from Roland Young – the reedman who made some amazing indie records a few decades back – still committed to richly organic sounds all these many years later! And although recorded over the past few years, the record has the same quirky appeal as Young's older material – only "modern" in maybe an early 80s sort of sensibility. Perfect Toy (Germany), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $1.99
Don't let the title or the bunny on the cover put you off, because there's nothing toy-like about these tunes – and the package is an excellent batch of rare German grooves put together with the same high level as other collections on the Perfect Toy label! Ex-Spinning Wheel mainman Marcus Hacker put together this one – and the grooves remind us a lot of some of the older SW sound library compilations – all awash in flavors borrowed from Brazilian bossa, American funk, Brit easy, and other genres – remodeled into a German economic miracle mode by a variety of jazz and studio players! The sound here is really really fresh – funky, but with lots of odd little touches and unusual instrumentation – a bit in the In Kraut mode, but more direct overall, and slightly less kitschy (although the set does have a few charming moments in that respect.) A number of tracks have vocals – some sung, some scatted – and titles include "Photographs" by Swegas, "Cameleon" by Kaate Frits Quartet, "Drift" by Orchester Heinz Kiessling, "Soul Samba" by The Earthquakers, "Guarana Guaranar" by Grupo Veneno, "Sara" by The Voices, "I Mimi" by Idili Tsaliki, and "Memories Of Yesterday" by Othella Dallas.

Various — Modern Sounds From Italy 2 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy .... $10.99
A low price, but a really great package – one that's overflowing with some of the best recent work from the mighty Schema Records! If you read these pages at all, you'll know we think that Schema's one of the greatest things going these days – a modern label, but one that's committed to the real jazz grooves of earlier years – the bossa, modal, and soul jazz styles of the 60s and 70s – played in a mixture of real instrumentation and just a bit of dancefloor production, with a sound that's instant classic on nearly every release! This package is a great introduction to the Schema label's genius, and even if you've got some of the tracks here on other releases, the set is a really great way to hear all this music in one place – kind of a "best of the best" that's totally great! Titles include "Bluesanova" by Gerardo Frisina, "Moon Vision" by Soulstance, "I knew The Way" by Invisible Session, "On A Clear Day" by Was A Bee, "Emotional Dancing" by S-Tone, "Stay (In Mood)" by Paolo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi, "Afrolicious" by Dining Rooms, "Esquema Da Bossa" by Quintetto X, "Today's Sound" by Intensive Jazz Sextet, and "Dreaming Of The Past" by Rosario Giuliani Quartetto.

Various — Pop A La Catalana – Jazz, Bossa & Groovy Sounds From Catalunya 1963 to 1971 ... LP
Vadim (France), 1960s. New Copy 2LP .... $14.99
A wonderfully offbeat strain of European pop from the 60s – rare recordings from the Catalonian area, that weird space in Spain that's also linked to southern France and the Mediterranean islands as well! There's a really playful feel to most of these numbers – and although many cuts are remakes of big Anglo hits, they've been re-fitted with new language, and some plenty cool arrangements that often make the music sound even groovier than in the original versions! In terms of spirit, we'd definitely compare a lot of this work to the best mid 60s pop coming from Paris – the groovy goodies of the "yeh yeh" generation – although in the end, the music's also very much it's own thing as well. Titles include "Cap A Futbol" by Guillermina Motta, "Yeh Yeh" by Tony, "Es Una Dona" by Nuri, "Febre" by Guillem D'Efak, "El Meu Trastet" by Santi Sans, "Soc Molt Poca Cosa" by Jacinta, "Amor" by Jordi Teijon, "Desafinat" by Grau Carol, and "El Cinemascop" by Llorenc Torres.

new Booker Ervin — Structurally Sound (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
1966. New Copy .... $14.99 Around June 25, 2013
One of Booker Ervin's last sessions – quite different than some of his earlier work, and a great indication of the way that he was stretching his style in the years before he left us forever! The group's a committed band of modernists, and includes a young Charles Tolliver on trumpet, plus John Hicks on piano and Lennie McBrownie on drums. The tracks are short, but they're a compelling mix of Booker's searching tenor lines with warm lyrical accompaniment. Titles include "Boo's Blues", "Franess", "Stolen Moments", "Berkshire Blues", and a great reading of "Dancing In The Dark". It includes 4 bonus tracks carried over earlier, out of print CD versions – alternate takes of "Franess" and "Deep Night", plus versions of "White Christmas" and "Shiny Stockings".

new Booker Little — Booker Little 4 & Max Roach ... CD
1958. New Copy .... $15.99 Around June 25, 2013
The late 50s work of Max Roach is some of the most crucially overlooked material in the history of modern jazz. His various groups at the time were filled with some of the brightest young players of the time – like George Coleman, Julian Priester, and Booker Little – all of whom were firmly rooted in a bop tradition, yet also committed to pushing the envelope of the music whenever they could. This 1958 United Artists album by Little is virtually a Roach session, and features group members Coleman and Little, plus Art Davis and Tommy Flanagan – all of whom fall perfectly into line behind Roach's masterful drumming on tracks like "Rounder's Mood", "Dungeon Waltz", and "Jewel's Tempo".

new Mellow Madness — Mellow Madness (red vinyl) ... LP
Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... Early July, 2013
Tight funky group soul from Fayetteville, NC's Mellow Madness – formed by youth educators Frank McNeil & Malachi Sharpe in the late 70s or early 80s – amazing stuff culled from unreleased master tapes and mixed by Kenny Dope! We must say right off that while there's a few fairly measured soul jams here, for the most part, it's way too energetic and funky to be described as "mellow". We ain't gonna complain about that, and we doubt you'll want to either! It's got some heavy hitting, yet still pretty easygoing post disco funk with hard drums – and lots of good-natured dancefloor soul –recorded apparantly in the early 80s, but with more of a mid 70s feel. Amazing stuff – the couple of singles we'd heard previously whetted the appetite for a more comprehensive compilation of material and Kay Dee has delivered really a great one here! The Includes "Save The Youth", "Mellow Madness", "Memories Of You", "Gone", "Struggles Of Life", "Gone (Kenny Dope Vibes Mix)", "Love On My Mind" and "Mellow Madness (Instrumental)".

Samuel Purdey — Musically Adrift ... CD
1999. New Copy .... Early May, 2013 (delayed)

Warne Marsh — Ne Plus Ultra ... CD
Hatology/Revelation (Switzerland), 1969. New Copy Gatefold .... $9.99 19.99 Just Sold Out!
A masterpiece by Warne Marsh – and proof that there was always a committed modernist lurking behind some of his more straightforward playing! The session has sort of a post-Tristano underground west coast feel (if we can make up such a heavy handed term!), and it features a piano-less quartet with Marsh on tenor, Gary Foster on alto, Dave Parlato on bass, and Terry Tirabasso on drums. Foster's playing at this point in his career is wonderful, with lots of crisy icy tones that remind us of the best Konitz recordings of the mid 50s. Tracks are long and introspective, and titles include Tristano's "Lennies Pennies" and "317 E 32nd", Konitz's "Subconscious-Lee", and the original improvisation "Touch & Go".

Capitol, 1972. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent album that features loads of material from Benny Hills' early days – when he was tighter and fresher, and before he worked too many years for ITV! You may recognize a number of these titles from later recordings, but these early ones are just great, and feature a much more lively reading of the material than other ones – full of sharp-witted lines, and a good sense of timing – all of the sort that have made Hill one of our favorites for wordplay over the years. Songs include "Ernie", "Broken-Hearted Lover's Stew", "Fad Eyed Fal", "The Beach At San Tropez", "Ting A Ling A Loo", "The Dustbins Of Your Mind", and "Rachel" – and spoken comedy includes "Ted", "Tour Guide", "Interview", and "The Birds & The Bees".

The record's surprisingly tight – especially for a major label effort of the time – really committed to the deepest sides of Irakere's style, particularly their great way with a jazzy solo – and actually put together with a lot more focus and drive than some of their earlier Havana recordings! The album packs plenty of punch, right from the start – and has a sense of power and majesty that's still very strong, all these many years later. Titles include "Baila Mi Ritmo", "Gira Gira", "Anung Anunga", and "Por Romper El Coco".

new Omni — All For The One ... LP
Fountain, 1982. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second LP by this obscure group from Chicago who never really managed to crack the big time, but who managed to be one of the bigger independent soul acts of the early 80's. Like their first, this one was recorded in Chicago with a sound that's similar to some of the other modern soul stuff that was coming out of the city's crumbling soul scene – good harmonies at the core, with all of the best songwriting elements of the glory days, but a bit more of a modern finish over the top. Still, Omni were always committed to a strong soul groove – as you can tell from their back cover thanks and endorsements to Leroy Hutson, Frankie Knuckles, and other Chicago soul giants! Cuts include "Body Groove", "Just How Bad", "Leave It Up To Me", "Out Of My Hand", and "All For The One".

2 lesser known albums by The Spinners – the first arranged by Thom Bell, the group's big supportive talent from the early days, the later arranged by Michael Zager, who's reaching a bit to try to give the group a more modern soul sound. Neither record is one of the group's finest – but overall, the CD's 14 tracks (3 are omitted from Labor Of Love, due to space restrictions) have enough good moments to show that The Spinners could still be going strong. The group's vocals are always a treat – even though there's not as many totally excellent tracks on the set – and titles include "I'm Riding Your Shadow", "You're Throwing A Good Love Away", "Honey I'm In Love With You", "Almost All The Way To Love", "Long Live Soul Music", "Give Your Lady What She Wants", "You're The Love Of My Life", and "I Found Love".

Philips/El (Brazil), 1962/1963/1964/1966. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nearly 3 albums' worth of music from the legendary Tamba Trio – one of the grooviest groups in the 60s bossa years in Brazil! The trio are quite unique – in that they not only play upbeat bossa rhythms, but also harmonize along with their grooves – in a soaringly sublime quality that really electrifies the tunes! Most of their lyrics are jazzy and somewhat scatted – kind of an added layer of music on top of the core jamming of piano, bass, and drums – and the production on these key 60s sides really helps their sound hit just the right level – a heavenly sound that's occasionally augmented by added percussion, flute, or guitar. The CD is one of the best introductions to their work we've ever seen – as it features material from the 60s albums Tempo, Tamba Trio, and Avanco, plus the rare Brasil Saluda A Mexico single – a whopping 26 tracks in all, with titles that include "Reza", "Tamba", "Batida Diferente", "Influencia Do Jazz", "Nos E O Mar", "O Amor Que Acabou", "Tristeza De Nos Dois", "Negro", "Rio", "Yansa", "Moto Continuo", "Barumba", "Danielle", "Pregao", "Boranda", "Consolacion", and "Morte De Um Deus De Sal".

new Various — Hot As Hel – Contemporary Jazz & Soul From Helsinki ... CD
Nine2five (Finland), 2006. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cool grooves from the icy north – a tremendous illustration of the hip sounds that have been coming from Finland in recent years! Helsinki may not immediately sprint to mind as a source of jazz or soul – at least not in classic terms – but in the 21st century, the city's fast become home to some of the most organic, most authentic jazz and soul acts we can think of – all really committed traditionalists who've been making some wonderful music that really resonates strongly with our favorites from the 60s and 70s! The sticker on the package bills the set as "club jazz", and while that music is featured strongly here, there's also a fair bit of great underground soul as well – all sung in English, and done with a quality level that resonates strongly with the best of the American Neo Soul scene! Titles include "Blueprint" by Five Corners Quintet, "Say It" by Nicole Willis, "Delirious" by Quintessence, "Spared Your Kiss" by Katrina, "Poseidon" by Dalindeo, "All You Give" by J-City, "Belong" by Dhaarmaone, "Left Hand Jazz (Cuica rmx)" by Infeckto, "Que Domingo Inquieto (Jori Huikkonen rmx)" by Freestyle Man, "Nature Girl" by Present Sence, "Heart Of Gold" by Spyritual, and "Feel" by Teddy Rok Seven.

Players include trumpeter Roger Guerin, pianists Marial Solal and Rene Utreger, and saxophonists Armand Migani and Hubert Rostaing. new Michel Legrand — La Piscine/Un Homme Est Mort/Un Peu De Soleil Dans L'Eau Froide ... CD
Universal (France), 1968/1971/1972. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
An incredibly groovy late 60s soundtrack from Michel Legrand – presented here with 2 other lesser-known gems as well! La Piscine may well be one of the last under-reissued scores from Legrand's genius period – that time when he was hitting heavily on soundtracks for The Thomas Crown Affair, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and other classics. This one's got a feel that's right up there with those – a mix of jazzy styles, mod themes, and cool vocal touches – sometimes scatted a bit, with that raspy style we love in Legrand's singing. A few other tunes are a bit mellow, but in a great way that really fits the watery title of the set – cool and shimmering, and with a great sense of sound that really shows Legrand's talents. Titles include "La Piscine", "Chasse Croise", "Blues Pour Romy", "Suspicion", "Une Enquete", "Dans La Soiree", and "De Souvenirs En Regrets" – plus "Run Brother Rabbit" sung by Delaney Bramlett and "Ask Yourself Why" sung by Sally Stevens. CD also features 3 great tracks from the film Un Homme Est Mort – "Une Homme Est Morte", "Onyx Bar", and "American Funeral" – all organ-heavy numbers, two of them jazzy, one ethereal! The remaining 7 tracks on the set are from the film Un Peu De Soleil Dans L'Eau Froide – some of which are a bit softer and mellower, although a few are upbeat and plenty groovy! These titles include "Dis-Moi", which is sung by Legrand – plus "Vivons L'Aventure", "Nathalie A Paris", "Seule Dans Paris", "Gilles Et Nathalie", and "Main Dans La Main".

A killer tribute to the music of Herbie Nichols – played by a committed batch of modernists who are clearly inspired by his genius! Misha Mengelberg's in the group on piano – and his angular lines on the keys have plenty of Nichols and then some – lots of Misha's own inventive inflections, but given a bit more focus than usual, in ways that really make the session a standout in his career at the time. Other group members are wonderful too – Steve Lacy, playing soprano sax in ways that almost recall his Monkish moments of the late 50s – George Lewis, blowing inside one moment, open and free the next – and rhythm players Arjen Gorter on bass and Han Bennink on drums. Mengelberg arranged – and titles include the Nichols tunes "Terpsichore", "Step Tempest", "Hangover Triangle", "Spinning Song", and "House Party Starting" – plus "Change Of Season" and "The Happenings".

There's a resonance here with other spiritual jazz experiments going on in the US at the time – and Ra and the 25 members strong group seem firmly committed to exploring new freedoms in jazz, yet still work with messages that can reach out to a larger group – themes explored vocally on versions of "Astro Black", "Enlightenment", and "Space Is The Place", juxtaposed by longer instrumental passages that have a cohesiveness that's sometimes missing from other live sets. Other titles the 2LP version include "What Planet Is This? Opening Improvisation", "Love In Outer Space", "The Shadow World", "Watusa/Egyptian March", and "Discipline 27" and "What Planet Is This? Closing Improvisation".
(180 gram vinyl. Please note: the 2LP version features alternate artwork and differently titled improvisational pieces than the 2CD version from Golden Years UK, and a bit less running time overall.)

new Wayne Shorter — Soothsayer (Japanese pressing – with bonus track) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1965/1979. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Also features a bonus alternate of "Angola".
(Packaged here with the original 70s cover art too!)

new Pharez WhittedFor The People ... CD
Origin, 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 16.98 Out Of Stock
Titles include "Sad Eyes", "Freedom Song", "Another Kinda Blues", "Watusi Boogaloo", "If They Could Only See", and "Venture".

new Tom Ze — Best Of Tom Ze – Brazil Classics 4 (limited edition Record Store Day Black Friday release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1970s/1980s/1990. New Copy .... $18.99 19.98 Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking collection of work from the legendary Tom Ze – and a record that really helped introduce his genius to the world outside of Brazil! Although it's hard to understand from the perspective of over a decade – especially one that's seen Tom Ze rise to fame again – when this compilation was first put together, the music of Tom Ze had all but fallen off the musical map of Brazil. Ze was one of the founding fathers of Tropicalia – and unlike other members of that group, who rose to great fame during the 70s, and straightened up their act a bit – Ze always remained a committed modernist, continually inventive well into the 70s and 80s – really coming up with amazing sounds that are always compelling, challenging, and often have a nicely quirky feel as well. The style's incredibly hard to pin down – and in fact, we might describe the recordings as being "anti-style" – but if you've heard any of Ze's work, you know you're in for a treat. The collection brings together material from a number of different labels – and titles include "Ma", "Doi", "Hein?", "Cademar", "Um Oh E Um Ah", "Augusta Angelica E Consolacao", "O Riso E A Faca", "Ui", and "A Felicidade".
(Released for Black Friday, 2011. Limited to 500 copies.)
