Panjabi MC — Beware Of The Boys (Mundian To Bach Ke) (radio edit, Mundian breaks, switch mix) ... 12-inch
Sequence, 2003. Near Mint- .... $0.99
The UK hit "Beware Of The Boys" is a pretty irresistible club track that fuses a Punjabi born bhangra groove with hip hop beats and clever pop culture samples, most notably the theme of the cheesy Night Rider show from 80s television. Here, power remixer Switch "garridges" the crap out of the song for the remix. There's a fine line between generally strong tracks like this and bad short-lived novelty singles – here's hoping P MC can follow this up with something equally great!

SwitchAm I Still Your Boyfriend? (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Total Experience/Big Break (UK), 1984. New Copy .... $14.99
A sweet sweet groover from Switch – post-Motown, but still sounding great – and if anything, maybe finding a whole new groove in the process! The quintet have all the warm modes of their best previous tunes – a touch of funk at times, but a vibe that's even stronger on tunes that have an open, mellow flow – that smooth-stepping groove that seems to really work perfectly with their vocals, and which gives this album a motherlode of old school jams! Forget the dated cover image, because this one's pretty classic all the way – with cuts that include "Switch It Baby", "It's All Up To You", "I'm So Satisfied", "Treason", "Keeping Secrets", and "Forever My Love". CD features bonus tracks – "Switch It Baby (12" version)", "Switch It Baby (inst)", "I'm So Satisfied (12" version)", and "I'm So Satisfied (inst)".

SwitchSwitch ... CD
Gordy/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy .... $18.99
A seminal bit of seventies soul from Switch, and a record that really helped set the tone for countless others to come in the 80s – no surprise, given that the group's got members from both the DeBarge and Ingram families! There's a warmth here that few others can match – an earnest, honest quality that never gets lost, even amidst the well-crafted instrumentation and tight production of the record – almost an updated legacy of the early 70s east coast scene, but never polished up too much at all! There's some wonderful harmonies that work perfectly on both the upbeat and mellower numbers – warming things up beautifully on titles that include "It's So Real", "I Wanna Be With You", "I Wanna Be Closer", "You Pulled A Switch", and "There'll Never Be".

SwitchSwitch II ... CD
Motown/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy .... $18.99
Quite possibly the best album ever from Ohio funky soul combo Switch – and certainly proof that the hope of Motown in the 80s was in ensemble group funk! This second album holds up really well, and thanks to some sweet production by Bobby DeBarge and Jermaine Jackson, the record's got a warm soulful groove that hooks on the popular styles at the end of the 70s, but which keeps the group fresh and point to possibilies for the new decade. We really wish more singers and groups followed suit in the early part of the 80s! Titles include "Calling On All Girls", "I Call Your Name", "You're The One For Me", and "Go On Doin What You Feel".

SwitchThis Is My Dream ... CD
Gordy/FTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy .... $18.99
One of the last records Switch recorded before Philip Ingram went solo, and the rest of the guys broke off into DeBarge – and an album with some surprisingly sweet soul moments! The funky side of Switch is still stringly in place, but this record has some great little ballads ballads too – with the band singing in a solid harmony style that's right upfront in the mix, unencumbered by the harder instrumentation of the funkier numbers, showcasing a soulful side that almost reminds us of the mid 70s east coast indie scene! Titles include "Love Over & Over Again", "All I Need Is You", "You & I", "Without You In My Life", and "Just Imagine".

new Reverend Louis Overstreet — Rather Fight Than Switch/There Is No Future In Gaining The World & Losing Your Soul ... 7-inch
Mississippi/Little Axe, Early 60s. New Copy (pic cover).... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bit blues, and a bit gospel – really unique work from Rev Louis Overstreet! "Rather Fight Than Switch" is a really upbeat track – fast tempo with stomping rhythms and soaring chorus vocals behind the Rev's raspy lead – overflowing with spiritual energy in a mighty nice way! "There Is No Future" feels almost like a bluesy sermon – with Louis playing guitar and testifying while he sings – as the chorus backs him up for emphasis!

new SwitchBest Of Switch ... CD
Motown, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
One of Motown's leading hopes in the early 80s soul scene, and for good reason too! These guys have a wonderfully well-rounded approach – great on ballads and even more compelling on groovers – a balance here that puts them proudly in the company of contemporaries like Maze or Slave, with a sound that's sometimes right in the middle of both. Titles include "Don't Take My Love Away", "There'll Never Be", "I Wanna Be Closer", "Best Beat In Town", "I Call Your Name", "You & I", and "My Friend In the Sky".

Beastie Boys — Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 ... CD
Grand Royal/Capitol, 2011. New Copy .... $11.99 18.98
Hip hop lifers and genre-defiant pop art blenders The Beastie Boys deliver the Hot Sauce – either their 8th or 9th album in 25 years, depending on how you count the Mix Up instrumentals set – and it sounds to us like a return to the good times hip hop funk style-hopping that the Boys flaunted so brilliantly in the period from Check Your Head to Hello Nasty! Hot Sauce was initially solicited as Part 1 to be followed by a Part 2, but the album was put on hold while Yauch battled cancer, which gave the Beasties plenty of time to finess the material and release it as the definitive project we have here. It's solid stuff and a Beastie Boys album through-and-through – and they're as immune to trends as ever. Guests include Nas, Santigold and Switch. Tracks include "Make Some Noise", "Nonstop Disco Powerpack", "Too Many Rappers (New Reactionaries Version)" with Nas, "Lee Majors Comes Again", "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win" feat Santigold, "Tadlock's Glasses", "The Lisa Lisa/Full Force Routine", "Here's A Little Something For Ya" and more.

James Brown & Others — Jump Around ... LP
King, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A slammin' set of heavy R&B numbers from James Brown – combined in here with some other nice tracks from King Records artists of the time! The set almost has the same feeling as some of the James Brown Show albums – in that James is presented with other hard-hitting artists of his time – yet the difference here is that the others are King Records giants in their own right. The album features about 50% material by James – all hard hitters that include "Suds", "Hold It", "Scratch", "Night Train", "Cross Firing", and "Night Flying" – nearly all of which are instrumentals, in the best early King tradition! These are followed up by other tunes, mostly instrumental, from other artists – including "Doin Everything" and "Switch A Roo" by Henry Moore, "Tonk Game" by Hank Marr, "Bushy Tail" by Clifford Scott, "The Wobble" by The Wobblers, and "Just A Little Bit Of Everything" by Herb Hardesty'.

DJ Krush — Stepping Stones – The Self-Remixed Best – Lyricism (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Sony (Japan), 2006. Used .... $6.99
The lyrically focused set in the 2 Stepping Stones compilations from DJ Krush – part remix album, part retrospective – featuring Company Flow, Black Thought & Malik B of the Roots, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, Zap Mama and others! Lyricism kind of finds Krush in his most hip hop reverent game, naturally – but he runs the gamut of possibilities within the genre. Krush never battles the MCs for track supremacy as many of the superstar producers of the day do. He's laying proper groundwork for the mic styles, yet still laying down his experimental funk signature – and the wide variety of vocalists gives him ample opportunity to show his unrivaled breadth! Tracks include "Only The Strong Survive (Bon mix)" feat CL Smooth, "Vision Of Art (Vib mix)" feat Company Flow, "Zen Approach (Cradle mix)" feat Black Thought, "Kill Switch (Beep mix)" feat Aesop Rock, "Song For John Walker (Sticky mix)" feat Anticon, "Danger Of Love (Gray-Sky mix)" feat Zap Mama, "Shinjiro (Harsh mix)" feat Mos Def and more.

Jonas Gwangwa & The African Explosion — Who (Ngubani)? ... LP
Jamal, Late 60s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
A rocketing bit of South African funky soul – and of the few great records released on Ahmad Jamal's short-lived Jamal label! The session's a lot hipper than some of the South African work that was issued in the US around the same time – and the feel here is almost more in a London post-colonial mode, with a strong criss-crossing of elements, but also a good sense of roots. There's an undercurrent of funk, too – tightly vamping rhythms, killer percussion, and it's peppered with sharp jazz solos from Gwangwa on trombone and Du Du Pukwana on sax – an overall groove that's almost like some of the Perception/Today label jazz funk of the early 70s! Some cuts feature vocals from Mamsie, and titles include "Dark City", "Switch #2", "Switch #1", "Szaba Szaba", "Kwatula", "Chant", "Who", and "African Sausage".

High Inergy — Lovin' Fever – The Best Of High Inergy ... CD
Motown/Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $16.99
Finally, a sweet compilation of some of the best numbers from latter day Motown girl group High Inergy – sunny soul that shines especially brightly with the benefit of hindsight! They managed to hit the charts early on, but it's pretty easy to see how these ladies could be unjustly overlooked in the grand scheme. They signed the Motown in the later 70s, after the Supremes and other formative girl groups had long ago finished blazing the trails, plus Motown was at a real crossroads in terms of it's honoring its iconic history, while still navigating contemporary trends. Meanwhile, High Inergy recorded some wonderful stuff – with some late disco era string-laden production as well as tender ballads – both focusing on the sweet vocals and songcraft, rather than trying too hard to be trendy. The original albums may have been hit & miss, but Expansion does a terrific job of treasure hunting – every track here is lovely! 20 tracks in all: Includes "Lovin' Fever", "First Impressions", "I'm A Believer", "Goin' Thru The Motions", "Cold This Be Love", "Devotion", "Just A Touch Away" feat Smokey Robinson, "Somebody, Somewhere", "Hold On To My Love" feat Switch, "All Of You", "Journey To Love". "He's A Pretender" and more.

James Hunter — Minute By Minute ... CD
Fantasy, 2013. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99 15.98
James Hunter at the Daptone Studios – working here with Bosco Mann production, and a sound that's much rawer than before! James has always had one hell of a voice, but this time around he also gets a bit more bite in his music too – a funky undercurrent that's more late 60s soul than some of the earlier sounds of the decade on previous albums – almost representing the same righteous evolution in Hunter's music that so many artists themselves experienced back in the day! The new punch is wonderfully placed – and may well finally get Hunter the kind of exposure he needs – appreciation from the soul underground for his wonderful vocals, and a groove that's got plenty of deep funk and New Orleans soul elements. Titles include "Gold Mine", "Drop On Me", "Minute By Minute", "Chicken Switch", "So They Say", "If I Only Knew", "Look Out", and "Let The Monkey Ride".

Mourning Reign — Satisfaction Guaranteed (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Sundazed, 1967. New Copy .... $14.99 19.98
Fuzzy sounds from the South Bay scene of the 60s – a really cool little combo that's equal parts psych and garage – with a tightness that's more Sunset Strip than most of the San Francisco groups of the time! The guitars have a nice sort of fuzz, but the rhythms are super-tight too – almost borrowing a soul influence at times, although there's no doubt that these guys are rockers through and through! The vocals have a quality that gets nicely trippy with the guitars, but never too far out – a bit like early Byrds – and titles include a nice remake of "Get Out Of My Life Woman", plus the cuts "Signed DC", "Light Switch", "Our Fate", "Satisfaction Guaranteed", "Run Run Run", and "Evil Hearted You".

100 Proof Aged In Soul — 100 Proof Aged In Soul (Japanese pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hot Wax/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy .... $26.99
A stone burner from 100 Proof Aged In Soul – a group who really take off with this tight second record! The album's a classic from the days when soul music ruled AM radio on both sides of the tracks – and the rest of the album is equally great – packing that tight post-Motown punch that made the Hot Wax label one of the best proponents of Detroit soul in the 70s! Arrangements are by a huge amount of early 70s heavyweights – McKinley Jackson, Paul Riser, and HB Barnum – and the set was produced by General Johnson and Greg Perry, in a style that soars along with the Chairmen Of The Board albums of the time. Titles include "Words", "I Don't Care If I Never Get Over You", "Everything Good Is Bad", "Ghetto Girl", "Nothing Sweeter Than Love", and "Don't You Wake Me". CD features lots of bonus tracks – "I'd Rather Fight Than Switch", "If I Could See The Light In The Window (version 2)", "My Piece Of The Rock (vocal)", "My Piece Of The Rock (inst)", and "I'm Mad As Hell (parts 1 & 2)".

People Band — People Band 1968 ... CD
Transatlantic/Emanem (UK), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99
An important and overlooked British ensemble of the late 60s – a group who were contemporaries of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and AMM, but who never fully received the same sort of attention! The People Band have a relatively loose approach to improvisation – one that's sometimes a bit warmer and more personal than some of their UK contemporaries – definitely driven by freedom, but also still hanging onto an inherent sense of soul that almost recalls the AACM a bit more than anything else. As with a group like the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, the players switch up instruments a fair bit – really trading sounds and notes in a spontaneously creative way – with Mel Davis on piano, trombone, and cello; Terry Day on drums and alto sax; Lyn Dobson on tenor; Mike Figgis on flugelhorn and acoustic guitar; Frank Flowers on bass; Russell Hardy on piano and keyboards; Eddie Edem on congas and trumpet; Terry Holman on bass and one string thingaphone; and George Khan on tenor and flute. Titles include "Home Trio", "Conduction", "Skip To Part 3", and "Conduction 3". CD features the full album originally issued on the Transatlantic label, plus a few bonus tracks.

Maurice White — Maurice White ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Very Good+ .... $1.99
The only solo album ever recorded by Maurice White – an upbeat and soulful set that's right up there with his best 80s work in Earth Wind & Fire! Like that group at the time, White's hitting a rhythmic side that's more electronic at points – letting beats and keyboard bits stand in for the previously-acoustic drums and percussion – yet all in a way that still retains that great EWF style of soul! Things are tight, but never too slick or commercial – and although the songs are catchy, they're never nearly as cloying as some of the other mainstream soul from the time. There's some surprisingly sweet moments that really show a new side of Maurice's talents, and titles include "Switch On Your Radio", "Stand By Me", "Sea Of Glass", "I Need You", "Invitation", "Lady Is Love", "The Sleeping Flame", and "Children Of Afrika".

Various — Twistin Rumble Vol 2 – 29 Cuts Of Soulstomp, Twist-Party Lunacy, Garage R&B, & Craziness 1960 to 1968 ... CD
Twistin Rumble, 1960s. New Copy .... $13.99
Rough and raw grooves – way more than you might guess from the "twist" reference in the title! The sound here is more R&B than anything else – lots of heavy drums, honking sax, burning organ, and riffing guitar – but there's also some echoes of Latin rhythms, rockabilly raunch, and some 60s soul elements too – all percolating together wonderfully in a way that sounds like somebody blew the dust off a gritty pile of 45s, then filled them up to blast away in a decades-old jukebox in a tavern on the other side of the tracks! The CD version of Twistin Rumble Vol 2 collects many of the tracks from Twistin Rumble Volumes 3 & 4 vinyl – with plenty of rare gems – including "Switch Me" by Hector & The Frogmen, "The Frog" by Lonnie Brooks, "Georgia Slop" by Big Al Downing, "Who's Number One" by Ambrose Donald, "Beyond The Shadow Of A Doubt" by Sonny Day, "I'm Gonna Spend My Money" by Poor Boys, "Aunt Molly" by Billy Emerson, "Make Love To Me" by The Royal Premiers, "Do The Whip" by Skip Cole, "Can Your Monkey To The Dog" by The Golden Catalinas, "Stronger Than Dirt" by The Ardels, "Wah Wabble" by The Debelaires, "Madame Bootie Green" by Sonny Forrest, "Black Crack" by The Shardells, "The Ostrich" by The Primitives, "Shake Your Body Girl" by Larry Williams, "Slauson Shuffletime" by Round Robin and "Soul Finger" by Oscar & The Majestics. 29 tracks in all.

new Kwick — Kwick/To The Point ... CD
Capitol/Expansion (UK), 1980/1981. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of killers from Kwick – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Kwick – sweet 80s groove from a quartet who were once known as The Newcomers, and recorded some Memphis singles for Stax – but who here reemerge more than fully-formed – leaping into the new decade with an amazingly rich sound! Given the group's previous work, the vocals here are really wonderful – trained on old school harmony modes, and refitted to some more contemporary rhythms – yet all in a way that never loses the depth that made them so great in the first place. Although never super-huge, the group have a quality level that rivals the best of their contemporaries in this mode from the time – making this debut a stone gem to rival the best from acts like Switch or Tavares. Titles include "I Want To Dance With You", "Can't Help Myself", "Serious Business", "Let This Moment Be Forever", and "Tonight Is The Night". To The Point is a wonderful second set from Kwick – a bit more grooving than their first, with added emphasis on funky bass bits and keyboards – yet a set that's still filled with all the great vocals from before! It's not easy to harmonize tightly while stepping along with a lively rhythm, but Kwick make it all sound perfect here – super-tight, yet never uptight – in a rare blend that few other groups could ever reach in such a setting! The whole album's a charmer – and titles include "Split Decision", "Nightlife", "You're The Star Of My Show", "You're The Kind Of Girl I Like", "No Winner No Loser", and "I Choose You".

new Larry Williams & Johnny Watson — Two For The Price Of One ... LP
Okeh, 1967. Used .... $29.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sock-soul set of material from Larry Williams and Johnny Watson – and one that really updates their older groove for the Northern Soul generation! The album's pretty amazing – hardly anything you might expect from any of Williams' earlier work, and drenched in the charms that Johnny Watson discovered in the 60s, and expanded in the 70s – but set to rhythms that are as hard-grooving from a soul perspective as any of the best work on the Okeh label at the time! Arrangements are by Arthur Wright and Melvin Jernigan, who hit a very natural vibe that lets Larry and Johnny trade lines back and forth wonderfully – in a very personal, almost spontaneous way that's very different than better-known male soul duos of the 60s – and the record is a key lost link in Watson's career, one that really lets you hear him tightening things up before his superstar years of the 70s. Titles include the killer classic "Two For The Price Of One" – plus "Too Late", "Aint' Gonna Move", "Keep On Lovin' You", "Takin No Chances", "A Quitter Never Wins", and "I'd Rather Fight Than Switch".
(Vinyl has some marks that click. Cover has some wear, a cutout hole, some staple holes in one corner, and a few bits of stuck-on paper in another corner)

CD also features 4 bonus tracks – including "Life", "Life (Freedom mix)", "Adventures Of The Heart (demo)", and "Sam The Jam".

new Beastie Boys — Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Grand Royal/Capitol, 2011. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $21.99 23.98 Out Of Stock
(Includes a digital download, a bonus 7 inch with "B Boys In The Cut " & "Pop Your Balloon" & an iron on!)

Anthony Braxton — Anthony Braxton (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Fuel (Italy), 1969. New Copy Gatefold .... $9.99
One of Braxton's great records for BYG, and like the other one, a very cool session that has Braxton playing in a vibe that shows his AACM roots much more clearly than a lot of other sessions. He's playing here with a number of other Chicago expatriates, including Leroy Jenkins, Steve McCall, and Leo Smith – and between them, the four players handle a huge amount of string, reed, percussion, and keyboard instruments, switching off and on in a warmly experimental sound that characterizes the best work of the Chicago avant garde from the time. Tracks include "The Light On the Dalta", "Simple Like", and one of Braxton's weird symbol compositions. Ironically, this French session from the late 60's still stands as one of the best ways to witness the budding Chicago avant garde!

Fatback — Phoenix ... LP
Cotillion, 1984. Very Good .... $3.99
Fatback flying like the Phoenix – but hardly rising from the ashes, given that the group's always on top! The sound here is a bit different – slightly leaner than before, but in a good way – with lots of core keyboards from Bill Curtis, who also handles most of the lead vocals – although as with most Fatback sets, there's plenty of sharing on that front with the rest of the group members – a bit of harmony here, a switched lead there – all keeping things nice and fresh! And this time around, there almost seems to be more of a focus on the mellower cuts, which we like a lot – because we've always enjoyed the more laidback numbers tucked in amidst the group's funkier sets – so this album's a real treat, with plenty of mellow and midtempo groovers. Titles include "The Drum Song", "Lover Man", "Call Out My Name", "You've Got That Magic", "Big Brother", "Jump Up Baby Jump Up", and "I Love You So".
(Cover has some old price stickers, some marker, and a tracklist sticker. Label has some marker.)

Oliver Lake & Julius Hemphill — Buster Bee ... LP
Sackville, 1978. Very Good+ .... $18.99
A sharp late 70s duo session from Oliver Lake & Julius Hemphill – captured at Toronto's Eastern Sound in March of '78 – great material joint composed by the two and performed with muscular, tension and delicate melody. Hempill and Lake both play alto saxes on the great opening and closing tracks, with Lake on flute on some numbers and Hemphill switching to soprano in spots. Titles include "Buster Bee", "Vator", "Flesh Turns Chi", "A Stand", "S", and "Fertility".

new Ramsey Lewis — Barefoot Sunday Blues ... LP
Argo, 1963. Very Good+ .... $8.99
One of the strongest early albums by the Ramsey Lewis Trio – especially because it features some great original material! The group – with the usual Redd Holt and Eldee Young lineup – is augmented by Chris White on a few tracks, who plays bass while Young switches to cello, an instrument that he played better in jazz than just about anyone. Apart from the group's great title reading of Cannonball Adderley's "Barefoot Sunday Blues", the record also features original tracks "The Train Won't Wait", "Come On Baby", "I Spend My Life", "Act Like You Mean It", "Salute To Ray Charles", and "Don't Even Kick It Around". Also includes Charles Lloyd's evocative composition "Island Blues".

Charles Lloyd — Journey Within ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $15.99
A great 60s moment not just for reedman Charles Lloyd, but also for pianist Keith Jarrett – who was a key part of Charles' group for a few years at the time – and who really opens up on this classic set! Tracks are long and very open – reaching in a spiritual sort of way with definite Coltrane overtones, yet also showing that more complexly rhythmic mode that made Lloyd a standout in previous groups before he was a leader – a quality that's really augmented by the presence of Jack DeJohnette on drums! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – and Jarrett switches to soprano sax on one number! Titles include"Journey Within", "Love No 3", "Memphis Green" and "Lonesome Child".

Steve Marshall — Maintain/Creative Happiness ... 7-inch
Reynolds/Dope Brother, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $4.99
A killer clubby groove from Steve Marshall – the kind that reminds us of the best indie singles from the late 70s disco years! Steve plays alto sax here over a strutting, high-stepping rhythm that's got plenty of warm touches – really glowing with a sense of soul that's great, and touched by some female chorus vocals that are very much in a Philly mode! "Creative Happiness" has Steve switching to flute, but still sounding plenty soulful – gliding warmly over a great groove that has bass and vibes dancing together in a sweet midtempo rhythm!

Mr Chop — Switched On (LP style sleeve) ... CD
Traffic, 2011. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99 15.98
Switched On funk from Mr Chop! Here's an homage to the innovative Moog-based LPs of the late 60s and early 70s – though the the great UK analog studio wiz Mr Chop is also doing it hard and heavy – it's not a light, airy and bubbly keyboard groove experience – this is spacey, fuzzy avant funk at its modern finest! Produced and engineered by Mr Chop and the players are like-minded geniuses – Malcolm Catto on drums, Coz Litter on bass, guitar, vocoder and more, Glyn Williams on clavinet, Moog, Hammond and Rhodes, Johnny Pop on Hammond organ and Mark Brunley on modular synth. The set includes some covers of funk and avant rock like you've never heard them before, and it's great all the way. Titles include "Hung-Up", "Root Down (And Get It)", "Breakthrough", "Givin Up Food For Funk", "Blow Your Head", "Deep Gully", "Greedy G", "Happy Birthday", "Vitamin C" and "Cortex".

Sun Ra — My Brother The Wind Vol 2 ... LP
Saturn, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A pretty darn incredible record from Sun Ra – with a soulful, spiritual approach that's missing from most of his other albums of the time! The album features Ra playing a good deal of organ (dubbed "intergalactic organ" in this case!) – grooving soulfully on some short tracks that almost hit a soul jazz mode, and which recall the late 60s experiments of organist Freddie Roach. One track, "Pleasant Twilight", is actually a pretty catchy groover with some great ensemble vocals – and other nice ones in this mode include "Somewhere Else", "Otherness Blue", and "Somebody Else's World". After those tunes, the album actually gets a bit "out" – with Ra switching to moog, which he uses in a very tripped-out sci-fi sort of way! The moog tracks are spare and spooky – with a real outer space approach, and lots of chunky analogue bits that still manage to be quite tuneful. Titles include "Sun Thoughts", "The Wind Speaks", "World Of The Myth I", and "The Design – Cosmos II".

Joe Turner — Big Joe Rides Again ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1960. New Copy .... $15.99
Joe Turner rides again – but in a style that's a bit more like his Kansas City roots than some of the R&B he was cutting for Atlantic Records in the 50s! There's a nice jazz vibe to the record – thanks to sharp arrangements from Ernie Wilkins, who's really coming into his own here – and knows how to serve up just the right blend of modern jazz and swinging soul to make the tunes work! The ensemble is filled with jazz heavyweights too – including Seldon Powell, Coleman Hawkins, Pete Brown, and Jerome Richardson on reeds – plus Ernie Royal on trumpet. But Joe's vocals definitely take center stage – infused with all the heavy power he'd assumed during this seminal comeback decade – still bluesy, but with a lot more punch than before. Titles include "Switchin In The Kitchen", "I Get The Blues When It Rains", "Nobody In Mind", "Don't You Make Me High", and "Here Comes Your Iceman".

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $22.99
Country cats, southern rockers, and even some soul-singers too – all wrapped up in a heady brew of grooves that definitely lives up to the swamp rock in the title! The package is a rich discovery of tracks from the southern scene at the start of the 70s – an amazing place where sounds were really criss-crossing at the time – not just mixing up country and redneck rock styles, but also drawing a surprising amount of influence from soul and funk too – especially the latter, given some of the massive rhythms in the set! Like the first volume, the collection is a great illustration of the way that, in the right parts of the south, boundaries were constantly being broken – as you'll hear on great tracks that include "Ruby" by Area Code 615, "Houston" by Cowboy, "For What It's Worth" by Cher, "Touch Em With Love" by Bobbie Gentry, "Sufficiently Breathless" by Captain Beyond, "Deep In Kentucky" by The Box Tops, "Lonesome & A Long Way From Home" by Earl Scruggs, "Let The South Wind Blow" by Grinderswitch, "Midnight Rider" by Gregg Allman, "The Minstrel Is Free At Last" by Barefood Jerry, "Somewhere In Between" by Bobby Lance, "No Fence Around Me" by Joe South, and "Who's Making Love" by Tony Joe White.

United Artists, 1965. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest of Barry's scores for the James Bond films – early enough to be raw, but confident enough to change up the mood nicely! The theme song features vocals by Tom Jones – and the rest of the tunes almost reads as a who's who of hipster influences, as so many of them have been taken up by other artists as band or album names. Titles include "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Thunderball", "The Bomb", "Chateau Flight", "Bond Below Disco Volante", "Death Of Fiona", and "Switching The Body".

new John Carter & The Ministry Of Sound — Men From The Ministry/Midsummer Nights Dreaming (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Rev-Ola (UK), 1966/1968. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fab early work from unsung British studio genius John Carter – 2 albums from his Ministry Of Sound group in the 60s! Carter's best known for his later, more baroque productions – but here he's working in a great blend of jangle pop and trippier influences – almost the British equivalent of some of the hipper LA groups of the time, but with bits of Hollies and Kinks-era pop in the mix as well! Tracks are relatively short and straightforward – based around catchy choruses, but often hitting on deeper themes, especially on the later work represented on the set. The 2CD package features the full tracks from the albums Men From The Ministry (1966) and Midsummer Nights Dreaming (1968), plus 11 more bonus singles from the group's Sunny Records sessions of the time. Titles include "I'm Coming Home", "Something Very Good", "Goodbye To Rosalie", "White Collar Worker", "In The Sky", "Sequin Sally", "Rain Raiin Rain", "Roberto Billow", "Love Equals Love", "Memory", "Turn Around", "Time & Motion Man", "Sunday In The Park", and "Magic People".

The rare early 70s funky treasure by Harmonica Paul! You might think from his name that Harmonica Paul would be more of a blues figure, but this here gem is a nicely simmering funky soul tune. The groove is raw, but absolutely killer – with Harmonica Paul singing and playing guitar – and never picking up a harmonica. His guitar grooves along nicely with the funky drums for most of the track, and switches to more of a wah wah sound later on into it , for an invigorating little twist. An amazing tune!

MCA, 1987. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Giorge may have switched the "e" in his name, but that's not the only thing that makes him stand out – because the album's something of an underground classic from the 80s, even though it's issued on a major label! Pettus is a great singer with a really mature feel – a quiet storm vocalist who really sparkles on the mellow cuts, and manages to sing with a deeply expressive feel that offsets any of the stiffer rhythms in the background. The album features some production by Kashif, who's probably a good comparison to Pettus – and titles include "My Night For Love", "Can You Wait", "I'm Good For You", "One Track Mind", "Trouble In Paradise", and "Make It Right".

new Idrees & Jamila Sulieman — Camel (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1964. Used .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A true jazz treasure from the 60s – as if you couldn't guess that already from the cover! The album's a really rare one from trumpeter and reedman Idrees Sulieman – a player who shone strongly on Prestige Records in the late 50s – then made the trip overseas, where he became a key member of the Clarke Boland Big Band! The set sparkles with some of the best energy of some of Idrees' contemporaries in that ensemble, especially some of the smaller combo offshoots of the CBBB – and, no surprise, it features some great work from saxophonist Sahib Shihab – another ex-pat who followed similar lines as Sulieman! Even more unusual, though, are the album's two vocal tracks from Jamila Sulieman – a great singer we'd never heard from before – and who brings in these deep blue tones on her pair of performances – almost in the way female vocals might be used on a Charles Mingus album from the time. Other numbers are soaringly instrumental – and half the album features a large group with Shihab on baritone sax, Bernt Rosengren on tenor, and alto sax from Sulieman – who then switches to trumpet for the album's remaining small group tracks. Titles include "Blues For Emanon", "The Camel", "Dawud's Bossa Nova", "I'll Remember April", "Sad & Strange", and "Long For The Blues".

Grant Green's last session as a leader – and although the tracks are a bit slicker than earlier work, the album's still pretty darn nice. The tracks are long in a CTI-type funky jazz mode, with arrangements by Mario Sprouse, and a nice little Latin feel to some of the best numbers. Green's solo ability is still quite good – and on the more uptempo tunes, he solos with that versatility and amazing dexterity that you'd find on his best earlier sessions. Other tracks have him in a mellower, more chromatic and Wes Montgomery-inspired mode – and titles include "Empanada", "Three Times A Day", "Nighttime In The Switching Yard", "Easy", and "Wave".

Mocambo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1966. New Copy .... $14.99 19.99 Out Of Stock
Classic trio material from one of Brazil's greatest pianists ever! Dom Salvador was a heck of a player back in the 60s – working in a tight trio format that was certainly part of the bossa combo sound of his day, yet also heavily influenced by American soul jazz artists of the same era. Here, he's working in an early trio with Edison Machado on drums – switching effortlessly between piano and organ as the rhythm section spins out lush, lyrical lines with more than a bit of soul in the mix. Many of the tracks on the album are quite obscure, making for a fresh little set that goes way past the usual piano trio side from 60s Brazil! Titles include "Indio Perdido", "Samborio", "Um Sonho Azul", "Balanco Do Mar Onda Quebrando", "Fred's Ahead", "Sonho De Carnaval", "Iluminando O Vazio", "A Cancao Do Amor Que Nasceu", and "Eu Compro Essa Mulher".

new Various — Best Of Kayden & Merben Records ... CD
Philly Archives, 1966/1967. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A tiny label, but one with some really great sounds – a great slice of the late 60s Philly scene, and a pretty darn soulful one at that! The label started as Kayden in Philly, then moved across the river to New Jersey and switched to Merben – but had a really unified sound throughout their short run, so much so that even the few pop recordings here come across with a pretty soulful feel! Most numbers are upbeat, and move in a Northern-ish soul mode – and the male singers here are especially great, almost a bit more deep soul than usual for the Philly scene, especially some of the groups. CD features 24 cuts from both labels, including some unreleased material – and titles include "You're Gonna Miss A Good Thing Baby", "Help Me Pretty Baby", and "At The End Of The Day" by John Bowie, who's pictured on the front cover – plus "Stop Think It Over" and "A Place For Me" by Leverett Sisters, "I Wanna Know" by Bill Horton, "Seven Days Fifty Two Weeks" by Cody Michaels, "Ask Any Girl" and "What Am I Gonna Do" by Matt Sound, "Where Did You Leave Your Heart" by Sharon Marshall, "Shake Me Wake Me" by Natural Facts, "I Can Only Give You Everything" by Bram Rigg Set, "Why Did God Make Girls" by JD Rogues, "Tell Me" by Shags, "How Could You Have Known" by Bats, and "Paint It Black" by Jimmy Roma.
