new Swiss All StarsSwiss All Stars ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), 1964. New Copy .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
A nicely grooving mid 60s collective of Swiss All Stars – led by George Gruntz – in a great set from '64! The set was captured at Studio Bern in September of that year, it's it's captivating stuff. Gruntz leads and plays piano in the set, and it really is tailored to let the individual players shine brightly – no one's work is overshadowed here, but they groove together brilliantly, too. The 11-piece group is incredible – featuring Bruno Spoerri on tenor and baritone (getting plenty of time for impeccable solos), Heinz Bigler on alto, a trumpet trio of Ray Court, Franco Abrosetti and Hans Kennel, Ueli Staub on vibes (also with some great solos here), drummer Rolf Banninger, Raymond Droz on trombone and Heinz Christen on bass. Includes" Perdido", "Dig The Scene-Sax Battle", "There'll Never Be Another You", "Boy Shooting", "Ballad Medley: Moonlight In Vermont/Everthing Happens To Me/I Can't Get Started" and "El Sino-Trumpet Battle".

George Gruntz with Kenny Clarke & Barney Wilen — Mental Cruelty – The 1960 Jazz Soundtrack ... LP
Sonorama (Germany), 1960. New Copy .... $16.99
An amazing soundtrack from 60s Europe – one that features incredible work from saxophonist Barney Wilen, right up there with his best Parisian recordings of the time! The score was written by George Gruntz for a little-known Swiss film – but it stars an all-great cast of players that includes Wilen on tenor and soprano, Marcel Peeters on alto and flute, Raymond Court on trumpet, and the great Kenny Clarke on drums. Gruntz himself plays piano, and scored the music with some excellent noir-ish touches that give the album a similar feeling to some of the best Nouvelle Vague soundtracks by Wilen, Miles Davis, and Art Blakey. Titles include "Student Hang Out", "Jazz Appreciation", "Latin Stroll On Theme", "Spanish Castles", "The Proposal", and "Good Time Joe". 18 tracks on this beautiful vinyl pressing from Sonorama – which is expanded from the original 10-inch release of the material in 1960.
