Wobbly sounds from Casino Vs Japan – loads of great low fi electronics that really take us back to that key 90s moment when so many folks were rediscovering the sound of the analogue generation! The music here comes from a few years after that moment, but still shares the same love of shapes and textures that made the rediscovery so great – and if anything, the lack of immediacy allows these guys to just lay back and find their own space – often letting the tunes just take form slowly, without any overdone qualities – giving the whole thing a really personal feel that's still quite vibrant all these many years later! Almost like a post-rock version of the Sky Records sounds from the German scene of the late 70s/early 80s – with tracks that include "It's Very Sunny", "Metrobolt", "Dielectric Saints", "The Larp", "Medery", "Warm Windows", and "Theme".

A wonderful soundtrack from Georges Delerue – and proof that, no matter what the setting, his musical work is always top-shelf! The film's a less-remembered Catherine Deneuve vehicle from the early 80s, but Delerue handles the music with a really timeless feel – a beautifully balanced set of orchestrations that move slowly, and with great feeling – unfolding gently as the set moves on – with that almost flower-like style he brought to some of his best arrangements of this nature. Some tracks are short, and together the music works wonderfully as an evocative sound piece, even away from the film. Titles include "Face To Face", sung by Vivian Reed – plus instrumentals "Nostalgie De Victor", "Marche Militaire", "Le Bar De L'Hotel", "Voltige Aerienne", "A Bientot Charlotte", and "L'Espoir". A trio of amazing albums – all of which really live up to the legend of Kim Fowley! First up is the well-titled Outrageous – one of the wildest albums ever from LA scenester Fowley – done in a very weird, very messed-up style that sort of sounds like The Stooges meet The Modern Lovers meet Alice Cooper! Fowley's fantastic on vocals – which are sort of of screeched and screamed, with revolutionary Riot On Sunset Strip-type lyrics, fused with a bit of Jim Morrison stoner spiritualism – a lot more compelling than you'd expect, and really mindblowing all the way through! The album's a perfect illustration of the genius that made Kim legendary, even when he wasn't having much of an impact on the mainstream – and titles include the incredible "Animal Man", plus "Hide & Seek", "Chinese Water Torture", "Bubble Gum", "Inner Space Discovery", and "Caught In The Middle". Next is Born To Be Wild – mindblowing organ work from the mighty Kim Fowley – a rare instrumental set that has Kim carving out amazing sounds on the organ that really match is vocal force on other records of the time! The set's a bit more soulful than usual for Fowley – a record that almost pushes a soul instrumental sound more strongly than Kim's usual Sunset Strip sleaze – although there is a nice fuzzy undercurrent to the record at times too! The set burns like some lost Tower Records soundtrack – and titles include "Born To Be Wild", "Soul Limbo", "Space Odyssey", "I Can't Stop Dancing", "Savage In The Sun", "Fresno1963", and "Pictures of Matchstick Men". Good Clean Fun is filled with awesome work from madman Kim Fowley – an album that offers hard rockers, some nice groovers, and even some trippier tracks that feature spoken or performed bits! Pivotal singles from the amazing Wanda Jackson – one of the greatest female rock and country voices from the 50s onward – who mixes a cutesy coo and a feral growl for a sound that was pretty much unprecedented at the time! The material bridges proto rock and country music in a way that confused the heck outta radio programmers and the label's hope to break her into superstardom back in the day – and Wanda had a voice that could've (and should've) made her a star on par with the Sun Studios boys club. She's tough and tender at the same time – and Capitol producer Ken Nelson is near the top of his game here, too. Smoking hot rod grooves – put together by studio maestro Bruce Johnston in the years before he became a bigger Beach Boy! The set's one of many groovy surf/car sets that Johnston cut during this mid 60s stretch – although it's more obscure than most, given its release on Smash Records – instead of the usual Capitol or Columbia outlets for his work. But the lineup features some key familiar faces from those other projects – guitar from Glenn Campbell and Tommy Tedesco, and some mighty drums from the great Hal Blaine! Hot Rod enthusiast George Barris adds his name to the project – and also gives up some nice car knowledge on the back cover – and titles include "Stick Six", "Fireball", "Jive Driver", "Super Fine", "Firecracker 400", "Hotty 32", and "Speed Shifters".

One of the greatest early albums by Julie London – a record that features sublime jazz backings from the Jimmy Rowles Orchestra, in a mode that gets way past the "breathy girl with subtle guitar" sound of her first few for Liberty! Rowles' backings bring in some really nice horn work – inflecting the tunes with subtle solos and shadings of color that deepen them past London's spare and sexy presentation of the tunes – but which also don't go too far, or force Julie to do things she's not ready to do. Bobby Troup produced, and the record's got all the subtle wit of his own best efforts – and titles include two Troup numbers, "Daddy" and "Free & Easy", plus "Somebody Loves Me", "For You", "Midnight Sun", "All My Life", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "Dream Of You".

Our favorite side of the genius of Ennio Morricone – and a really wonderful collection that completely illustrates why we love Morricone so much! In the mainstream world, Morricone's best known for his famous scores for spaghetti westerns and horror films – both of which have a trademark sound that's pretty well known to audiences at large. But during the same period he was penning soundtracks for those genres, Morricone was also working in a style that was even more completely his own – a gentle, mellow, easy-grooving mode that was inspired by jazz, bossa nova, and easy instrumentation – yet which emerged with qualities that were completely unique, and which still stand today as some of the most inventive work of its generation! There's a simple, economical approach here that's really mindblowing – rhythms that flow slowly like fog escaping from a riverbank, notes that fall in slight spare patterns like drops of rain from a leaf after a storm, and gently cascading waves of sound that float and shimmer in the mix – rising as carefully as the sun to give the music a wonderfully redemptive spirit. The tracks on the set are carefully chosen from films that include Scusi Faciamo L'Amore, Verushka, La Donna Invisible, Le Foto Proibite, and Il Gatto A Nove Code – and we can honestly say that the set is a perfect introduction to the Morricone that we love more than anyone else!

Easy instrumentals and jazzy genius from the early 70s Brit scene – groovy, moddish jazz takes on pop and soundtrack hits of the time from the Harry Roche Constellation – with a vibe that betters the grooviest of sound library discoveries! There's a loungey charm to many of the tunes, but trombonist Roche and his Constellation get down and dirty in spots, too – such as on the priceless, tripped out fuzzy funk version of "Pinball Wizard" – and that's just one highlight of this should-be classic! Blasting horns, easy keys, chiming strings, jazz funk bass and grooves galore! Players include the cream of the crop of period British session players. Sammy sings soul – not Sammy Davis Jr, but this ultra-hip Japanese singer from the early 70s – a female vocalist who works here with great backings from the Freedom Unity ensemble! The tunes are all numbers from American and British sources of the 50s and 60s – tunes you'd know from versions on labels like Stax or Atlantic, but redone here with some really groovy new inflections – including cool arrangements from Freedom Unity, with a nice blend of strings and soulful jazz elements – including some especially great keyboards and reeds on some numbers! Sammy sings in English, but with this unusual accent that really transforms the tunes – and titles include versions of "Hey Jude", "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Summertime", "What Am I Living For", "House Of The Rising Sun", and "Nobody's Fault But Mine".

An interesting project from Elliott Sharp – a set that mixes his older downtown sounds with some surprising rootsy elements – all in a blend that really helps his music stretch out strongly! Sharp's guitar work is still incredible – whether arch and arty, or acoustic and bluesy – and the album features a mix of instrumental workouts and vocal numbers – with lyrics sung by Tracie Morris, Eric Mingus, and Joe Mardin. Hubert Sumlin plays some guest guitar, and Curtis Fowlkes adds a bit of trombone – and titles include "Fade To Noir", "This House Is For Sale", "Endless Path", "Banking Blues", "I Blame You", and "Off The Hook".

An early gem from Ghana legend Ebo Taylor – a smoking little set with a really hypnotic feel overall! The tracks here are all nice and long – and build energy with kind of a minimal layering of sound – an approach that's different than some of the longer Nigerian jams you might know from the time, but with a style that's equally compelling – especially give the great use of guitar and keyboards! These instruments are heard to best effect on the sublime "Peace On Earth" – a tune that features this wonderful other-worldly electric piano – ringing out with tones that are almost vibes-like at times, and which almost have a Sun Ra-ish sort of quality. Also great is "Atwer Abroba" – a tune with some funky horns riffing along with the tight percussion, and captivating vocal refrains over the top. The title cut, "Twer Nyame", has wonderfully chromatic guitars – really let loose, and allowed to build slowly – creating this warm electric energy on the tune!

A repackaging of tracks put together in the late 70s, collecting some of War's "jazzier" moments. Although it was War's more succinct, funkier numbers and singles that we dug most about the band at first, it's these numbers where the group opens up a bit more that they really shine, if you ask us. There's still a great groove, with more than a little Latin influence creeping in here and there underneath, and all of the members of the group are more than respectable soloists, with solid playing throughout this collection. Titles include "LA Sunshine", "Platinum Jazz", "Slowly We Walk Together", "River Niger", "H2Overture", "City Country City", and "Deliver The Word".

A pair of London Records albums from Margaret Whiting – back to back on a single CD, with bonus tracks too! Maggie Isn't Margaret Anymore is cool crossover pop from Whiting – a late 60s album that still draws strongly on her roots in jazz, but which also has Maggie trying on some younger styles too! The set isn't all 60s pop overall, but there's definitely a nice choice of tracks that goes way past the usual Margaret Whiting bag – although often arranged in ways that still hold more strongly to the sentimental echoes of Whiting's past. Titles include "This Is My Song", "Somethin Stupid", "If This Is Goodbye", "Because","Only Love Can Break A Heart", and "Just Like A Man". Pop Country is exactly what's promised in the album's title – a set of popular country numbers, sung by Margaret Whiting in a style that carries plenty of echoes of Nashville! The style is often soft and dreamy – with Whiting's blue-tinged vocals moving gently over backings that are usually given a slight bit of electric bass, just to step things along slowly. The approach works surprisingly well – a real winner for Margaret – and titles include "I Love You So Much It Hurts", "Release Me", "I Hate To See Me Go", "Am I Losing You", "You Don't Know Me", and "Gentle On My Mind". CD also features four totally groovy cuts – unreleased tracks that include "I'm Losin My Mind", "The Heart Of A Sailor", "Boys Fall In Love", and "Believe In Me".

A wonderfully expanded version of this classic of funky funky female soul! Marva Whitney was one of the greatest singers in the James Brown stable of stars during the late 60s – and she sang with a hard raw style worth of The Godfather himself! Brother James produced and wrote a good part of this classic album – and the record is one of the greatest JB albums of all time! Nearly every cut's a winner – like the sample classic "Unwind Yourself", which has a crazy corkscrew sax line, or the massive two-part remake of the Isley's "It's Your Thing" (titled "It's My Thing"), or the slowly funky "Get Out Of My Life", or the massive duet with Bobby Byrd "You Got To Have A Job", or the classic instrumental "In The Middle". This reissue is an expanded version, and it features a very excellent batch of tracks that were previously only issued as funky 45s! Tracks include "Sunny", "I Made A Mistake Because It's Only You (parts 1 & 2)", "You Got To Have A Job", "Shades Of (inst)", "I'm Tired I'm Tired I'm Tired", "This Girl's In Love With You", "He's The One", "Unwind Yourself", "What Kind Of Man", "Things Got To Get Better", "It's My Thing (parts 1 & 2)", and "Get Out Of My Life". 18 cuts in all.

An early 60s Columbia classic from Johnny Williams – a rare album of stereo-heavy instrumentals done in a style that's quite similar to the RCA Stereo Action series of the time – with lots of unusual instrumentation, and a wide-ranging sound that leaps back and forth from speaker to speaker! There's plenty of jazzy interplay in the music – similar to Williams' 60s soundtrack work – and the large array of woodwind, brass, and rhythm players includes west coast jazzmen like Pete Candoli, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Rowles, Larry Bunker, and others. Titles include "The Varsity Drag", "Fascinatin Rhythm", "Johnny One Note", "An Occasional Man", "Sunny Disposish", "Buckle Down Winsocki", and "My Heart Belongs To Daddy".

Deep deep soul – from an almost unlikely source! In the early 60s, the Old Town label was mostly known as the home to some top-shelf R&B, pop-oriented doo wop, and classier vocals – but as the decade rolled on, Old Town started to move into styles that included a fair bit of harder deep soul, and which included a fair number of tunes the label purchased from other sources in the south! This side of Old Town has often been under-acknowledged next to the company's more famous doo wop output – but it's wonderfully brought back to light here, through a wonderful set of notes and fantastic track selection that easily makes the set one of the best deep soul CDs we've heard in a while! Some of the work here is by artists who sung more famously for other labels, but who come off especially nicely here – and other tracks are by virtual unknowns who were lost to the shifting fates of the record business, given Old Town's decline at the time. But whatever the case, the collection's an excellent one – filled with 24 deep soul tracks that include "I Won't Give Up My Man" and "Never Leave Me" by Thelma Jones, "I Got The Right" and "Stop" by Lester Young, "Nobody Knows" by The Flambeaus, "Sugar" by Bobby & Betty Lou, "She's A Woman" by Jesse Gee, "It Ain't Right" by Roscoe & Barbara, "Heartbreak Avenue" by Bobby Long & The Dealers, "Crazy Little Girl" and "I'll Never Forget You" by Donald Height, "I'm Sorry For You" by Frank Howard & The Commanders, and "Just Loving You" by Irene Reid.

Raw & rambling folk sounds from Michael Hurly – recorded in early '72 – some of his better material of the era, living up to if not surpassing his Armchair Boogie of a couple years earlier! Michael's in seemingly amiable spirit here on some tunes, and a standing on shakier ground and in scarier waters at other points, with some country rock tinged jams and weirdo troubadour numbers. A howling classic by The Sonics! "Psycho" will always be one of our favorite Sonics' tunes – a scorcher with an R&B influence – done with a maniacal proto-punk urgency. That sax honking behind those bugged-out vocals – it's absolutely essential! "Maintaining My Cool" is, well, comparably quite cool – but still with a menacing edge – particularly via the sneering, swaggery lyrics.

A bit of ballads, but probably a bit more blues too – given that Joe Locke's approach here is mighty darn soulful, and really keeps things moving nicely – even during mellow moments! Locke bills the album as dedicated to folks who've worked a hard day, and need to slow down in the evening – yet the style here is as fresh and complex as most of his other work, and hardly the kind of soporific outing you'd expect. Locke's work on the vibes is as deft as ever – and his trio here has a nice punch, even when moving a bit slowly – thanks to work from Ryan Cohan on piano, Jaimeo Brown on drums, and David Finck on bass. The set features a great version of "Ain't No Sunshine", taken at a funky clip – plus "This New October", "Simone", "I Can't Make You Love Me", "Bittersweet", and "Broken Toy".

A great date from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – a record that's a bit mellower and more electric than some of his previous 70s efforts, but which is still plenty darn great! Gato's tenor has a tone that's undeniably great – a slightly raspy sort of edge that sounds warmly human and deeply personal, even when cast in fuller backings – as it is here, with arrangements and production from Herb Albert. There's still a few Latin undercurrents in the mix, but most of the backings feature guitar, keyboards, and percussion stretching out slowly and with a slightly slinky edge – still quite soulful, but a bit mellow at moments – in ways that allow Barbieri to slide out slowly with some great lines that wrap around the rhythms beautifully. Titles include "Ruby", "Nostalgia", "Adios", "Sunride", "Midnight Tango", and "Latin Reaction".

An unimpeachable hip hop classic that stands as one of our favorite records of the era. Disc one features the original album, which includes "Doin Our Own Dang", "J Beez Comin Through", "What U Waitin' 4", "Beyond This World", "Acknowledge Your Own History", "Sunshine", "Beeds On A String", "Done By The Forces Of Nature", "Kool Accordin 2 A Jungle Brother" and "Tribe Vibes". Disc two features an assortment of remixes, 12" edits and more classic and rare titles, one-time vinyl exclusives – most on CD for the first time! Also includes some unreleased Janatte Beckman photos from back in the day.

The cover on this one's so goofy, it's easy to miss what a great session it is – but the album's a west coast gem from the late 50s, with a really unique sound that makes it a must-have for any fan of the LA scene of the time! Jimmy Rowles leads the group on piano, and the album features 2 different lineups – one with Harold Land on tenor and Larry Bunker on vibes, the other with Pete Candoli on trumpet – both of which are augmented by Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. And while Candoli's trumpet is wonderfully sparkling on the set, we really really love the pairing of Land and Bunker – as the vibes and tenor sound is arranged here with a counterpoint that's just great, and which features some especially biting tones from Land! Titles include "The Cobra", "El Tigre", "Cheetas For Two", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "All For You", "East Of The Sun", and "The Blues". CD features 2 bonus alternate takes!

Wobbly sounds from Casino Vs Japan – loads of great low fi electronics that really take us back to that key 90s moment when so many folks were rediscovering the sound of the analogue generation! The music here comes from a few years after that moment, but still shares the same love of shapes and textures that made the rediscovery so great – and if anything, the lack of immediacy allows these guys to just lay back and find their own space – often letting the tunes just take form slowly, without any overdone qualities – giving the whole thing a really personal feel that's still quite vibrant all these many years later! Almost like a post-rock version of the Sky Records sounds from the German scene of the late 70s/early 80s – with tracks that include "It's Very Sunny", "Metrobolt", "Dielectric Saints", "The Larp", "Medery", "Warm Windows", and "Theme".

An early gem from Ghana legend Ebo Taylor – a smoking little set with a really hypnotic feel overall! The tracks here are all nice and long – and build energy with kind of a minimal layering of sound – an approach that's different than some of the longer Nigerian jams you might know from the time, but with a style that's equally compelling – especially give the great use of guitar and keyboards! These instruments are heard to best effect on the sublime "Peace On Earth" – a tune that features this wonderful other-worldly electric piano – ringing out with tones that are almost vibes-like at times, and which almost have a Sun Ra-ish sort of quality. Also great is "Atwer Abroba" – a tune with some funky horns riffing along with the tight percussion, and captivating vocal refrains over the top. The title cut, "Twer Nyame", has wonderfully chromatic guitars – really let loose, and allowed to build slowly – creating this warm electric energy on the tune!

Scattered Melodies spun from traditional Korean Kayagum Sanjo recordings – and the deepest vinyl excavation to date by Sublime Frequencies – the label's first compilation material culled from rare 78s! The music is mostly from the 20s & 30s, but it has at least one piece from the 50s - all spare, hypnotic string melodies and raw drum accompaniment! The titles refer to tempo and rhythmic patterns, as opposed to standing as subjective song titles, with the slowly plucked "Chinyangjo", the faster "Chungmori" and the even faster "Chungchungmori" alternately played by Kim Hae Sun, Jung Nam Hee, An Ki-Ok, Kim Chongi-Ki and Shim Sang-Gun, plus some additional/alternately-titled movements. It's a riveting look at a Korean folk tradition that we'd never had the pleasure of hearing before this – and another great reason to cherish the deep diggers at Sublime Frequencies – with a concise, yet informative set of notes. 13 performances in all – each as captivating as the one before!
