Tony Allen & Africa 70 — No Accommodation For Lagos/No Discrimination (2CD Strut version) ... CD
Strut (UK), 1979. Used 2CD .... $16.99 Just Sold Out!
Stunning Afro Funk grooves! Fela's legendary drummer, Tony Allen, leads the set on both of these rare albums – nicely packaged onto 2 individual CDs that are like tiny record sleeves, complete with all the original cover art and everything! The groove on the record is pure Fela – and Mr. Kuti helps out with production and playing on one of the 2 records in the set. The first album – No Accomodation – features Allen leading the Africa 70 group on 2 very long tracks – "African Message" and "No Accomodation For Lagos". The other album – No Discrimination – has shorter tracks (about 9 minutes long), with some very nice guitar work, and an even tighter groove than the other cuts. Titles include "Road Safety", "Love Is A Natural Thing", and "Ariya".

new Tony Allen & Africa 70 — Jealousy/Progress (2CD Strut version) ... CD
Strut (UK), 1979. Used 2CD .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Fantastic Afro funky! This set lovingly repackages 2 early albums by Tony Allen, best known to the world as the drummer in Fela's legendary Africa 70 group! Both records have a distinctly Fela-sounding groove – which isn't surprising, as they were produced by Fela, feature Fela, and have Allen playing with Fela's Africa 70 group. These tracks are even rarer than original Fela material, though – so it's super-great to have them on CD. Four long tracks – "Jealousy", "The Hustler", "Progress", and "Afro Disco Beat". As if your Fela collection wasn't big enough yet – it just got bigger, with 2 totally essential albums!

Blo — Phases 1972 to 1982 ... CD
Strut (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used .... $18.99
Collected work by Blo – a hip Nigerian funk ensemble from the mid 70s! The group have a more complicated sound than some of their contemporaries – adding in dubbier stylings and bits of psychedelic guitar to the more common Afro-Funk percussion – in a mode that almost sounds like it's got traces of Can or other proggish groups, as you might hear on some of Tony Allen's more recent work, or on some of the early 70s Brit post-colonial crossover bands, like Assagai or Cymande. It all makes for a very interesting sound – marking the group as one of the most unique of their generation! Titles include "Blo", "It's Gonna Be A Good Day", "Number One", "Trace of Suicide", "Atide", "Don't Take Her Away From Me", and "Miss Sagit".

new Various — Wild Bunch – Story Of A Sound System ... CD
Strut (UK), 1980s. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A crunchy batch of grooves from one of the hippest British soundsystems ever! The Wild Bunch were a Bristol-based collective dedicated to spinning the best in underground hip hop and club tracks – a group whose members included Roni Size, Tricky, Krust, and future members of Massive Attack, represented here by DJ Milo, who's come up with a fantastic batch of tracks that perfectly sums up their genius blend of styles and rough-edged groove! The CD version of the set features a continuous mix of tracks by Milo – 26 tunes laid out back to back, bumping and jumping through a set list that includes "It's Yours" by T La Rock, "Just Rhymin With Biz" by Big Daddy Kane & Biz Markie, "We Rap More Mellow" by Younger Generation, "It's Your Rock" by Fantasy, "Rock Shock" by BBCS &A, "Who Needs Enemies With Friends Like You" by Montana Sextet, "The Music Got Me" by Visual, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "DJ's Delight" by Ingram, "Love Rap" by Spoonie G, "Double Fresh" by The Wild Bunch, "Inside Out" by Odyssey, "I'm In Love" by Evelyn Champagne King, "Smurph Across The Surf" by Micronawts, "Dyin To Be Dancin" by Empress, "Can You Feel It" by Mr Fingers, and "It's Serious" by Cameo.

new Various — Horse Meat Disco ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
Marvelously mixed-up work from the Horse Meat Disco team – a great way for all of us to sample the revolutionary grooves they've been laying down at their famous club night in London! The work here is hardly the conventional disco you'd find on other compilations (although maybe you already guessed that from the "horse meat" in the title) – and instead, the grooves are an odd range of funky club styles from the late 70s and early 80s – including many tracks that have a jagged, percussive edge that's a far cry from smoother disco. Don't get us wrong, though – as there's definitely some great disco touches here too – yet these are still far from the mainstream, and just slide on in to warm things up before the beats take over on the next tune. 2CD set features one disc mixed by the team, one unmixed – with titles that include "In The Evening" by Sheryl Lee Ralph, "Danger" by Gregg Diamond, "Dancing Shoes" by Plaza, "Freakman" by Empire Projecting Penny, "And I Don't Love You (Larry Levan inst)" by Smokey Robinson, "Detour (party mix)" by Karen Young, "Disco Jam" by Eddie Drennon, "Love Bite" by Richard Hewson Orchestra, "I Don't Depend On You" by Two Tons, and "It's Alright" by Gino Soccio.

Segun Bucknor — Poor Man No Get Brother – Assembly & Revolution 1969-1975 ... CD
Afrostrut (UK), 1970s. Used .... $19.99
Pretty amazing work from Nigeria! Segun Bucknor was an excellent vocalist with a style that was raspy and spiritual – much more other-worldly than a lot of his Afro Funk contemporaries, especially on the album's longer tracks, which have a spaced out groove that's really incredible. The groove here has bits of Fela-like jamming – but also more of a spacious jazzy groove, mixed with 70s rhythmic influences, and just the right touch of funk from time to time. Most of Segun's work has never been properly reissued before – and, as with all the Strut releases, this package is an over-stuffed batch of gems that will finally give him his due! The set includes notes on the music and Segun's story – and a wealth of great tracks that include "Sorrow Sorrow Sorrow", "Dye Dye", "Adanri Sogbasogba", "Son Of January 15th", "La La La (hard version)", "Smoke", "Who Say I Tire", and "You Killing Me".

David Murray — Shakill's Warrior ... CD
DIW/Columbia, 1991. Used .... $11.99
A surprisingly nice album of straight ahead tenor tracks from David Murray – playing here in a quartet with guitarist Stanley Franks, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and the great Don Pullen, who plays organ on the session! The album's not exactly in the classic soul jazz organ/tenor mode – but it is one of the few that Murray ever recorded, and it's quite interesting to hear him in this sort of a format. Plus, it was also one of the few recorded during that magic year of 1991 – when DIW really seemed to be getting things right, turning out some of the few truly genius albums in the history of the label. Titles include "Milano Strut", "Black February", "At The Cafe Central", "In The Spirit", and "High Priest".

new Various — On The Corner – Fantastic Fusion Grooves From The Jazz Funk Masters ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1970s. Used 2CD .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
The sweet sound of 70s Blue Note – a really wonderful stretch for the label, and a time when the company was stretching out in a range of sublimely soulful directions! This period's probably best known for the influence of Larry Mizell on some of the label's key players, but it's also got plenty more to offer too – Brazilian influences in the rhythms, electric undercurrents in the instrumentation, and some especially soulful vocals on some of the best-remembered tracks. Old players are born anew, new players rise to lofty heights, and the whole thing's an amazing discovery in jazz – filled with key tracks that do a better job of summing up 70s Blue Note than our few worlds ever could! 20 tracks in all – including "Chicago Damn" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Koko & Lee Roe" by Gene Harris, "Love So Far Away" by Donald Byrd, "Fun House" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Cheshire Cat" by Ronnie Foster, "Kumquat Kid" by Eddie Henderson, "People Make The World Go Round" by Bobby Hutcherson, "In Pursuit Of the 27th Man" by Horace Silver, "You're Everything" by Carmen McRae, "Route" by Moacir Santos, "Sassy Soul Strut" by Lou Donaldson, "Always There" by Ronnie Laws, "Essence Of Mystery" by Alphonse Mouzon, and "Motherland" by The Waters.

new Patti LaBelle — Be Yourself ... CD
MCA, 1989. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hit set from the end of the 80s – one that showed Patti still going strong in her third decade in soul music! The set's got a style that's decidedly more modern than some of the classic work we know from Patti – but her vocals are still very strongly in place, and if anything, the overall presentation of the album has her strutting her stuff as a diva even more strongly than before. Titles include "Yo Mister", "I Can't Complain", "If You Asked Me To", "I'm Scared Of You", "Can't Bring Me Down", "Need A Little Faith", and "I Can Fly".

new Sonny Clark — Sonny's Crib ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
Hard-slamming genius from pianist Sonny Clark – one of his greatest albums for Blue Note, and a real cooker that's served up with an all-star group! Clark's vision has never been tighter or fuller than on this album – save, perhaps, for the magnificent Cool Struttin – and his command as a leader is impeccable, effortlessly shaping the horns of Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, and John Coltrane to realize his unique vision in music. Rhythm is by Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and titles include classics like "News for Lulu" and "Sonny's Crib", plus smoking renditions of "Speak Low" and "With a Song in My Heart".
Also available: Sonny's Crib ... LP $9.99
