Lou Donaldson — Sassy Soul Strut ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $15.99
Plenty of sass, and plenty of soul – a great mix of modes from the mighty Lou Donaldson! The set has Lou expanding his sound a bit from the harder funk of Blue Note dates from a few years before – working with arranger George Butler, who gives the record a cool electric vibe – almost like some hip early 70s soundtrack! Great proof of that is Donaldson's classic take on the "Sanford & Son Theme" – done here in a way that stretches out a lot more than the original – and other nice funky tracks include "Inner Space" and "Sassy Soul Strut".

new Young-Holt Unlimited — Soulful Strut ... CD
Brunswick/Solid (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A funky soul instrumental classic – all the way through! The team of Eldee Young and Redd Holt first came to prominence with Ramsey Lewis' first Chicago trio, then branched out on their own as a jazz act – but by the time of this set, they'd picked up a hipper, funkier late 60s sort of soul groove – and were working with larger backings and a nice deal of extra bass! The pianist in the group is the super-dope Ken Chaney – a player who uses space as much as he uses notes – providing a cool counterpoint to the funky and jazzy riffing of the Young/Holt bass/drum combo. The album includes the landmark track "Soulful Strut" – with tinkling piano over funky backings mixed with sweetened strings – and other tracks include "Funky Is As Funky Does", "Baby Your Light Is Out", "Who's Making Love", "Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy?", "Be By My Side", and "Please Sunrise". A high point in the Chicago soul scene – with backings by Willie Henderson!

new Various — Strut 'N' Get Up – Funky Fat Slices Of Groove Cut From Blue Note ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Heavy funk from the deeper EMI catalog – packaged with a Blue Note label, but featuring gems from a wealth of related labels too! The assortment of styles here is really wonderful – and runs from gritty deep funk, to warmer soul jazz, to some sweet 70s groovers with a really slinky feel – all laid out in a way that really makes sense, and hardly lets you feel like you're jumping around from genre to genre! Titles include "Momma" by Ronnie Foster, "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow (Baretta's Theme)" by Earl Klugh, "Bring Down The Birds" by Herbie Hancock, "Shack Up (parts 1 & 2)" by Banbara, "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Daisy Mae" by Raul De Souza, "You Are The World" by Donald Byrd, "Movin" by Brass Construction, "Punch Bowl" by Alan Parker, "Ain't It Funky Now" by Jimmy McGriff, "Color Blind" by Maze, "Communication" by Bobby Womack, "Funky Sneakers" by Willie Bobo, "Funky In Here" by Willard Burton, and "Street Lady" by Donald Byrd. 18 cuts in all!

new Various — New Orleans Funk – The Original Sound Of Funk Vol 2 – Second Line Strut ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
An incredible follow up to the first New Orleans Funk compilation on Soul Jazz – even harder-hitting than the first, and filled with funky rare gems! This set took nearly a decade to follow the first, but it's been well worth the wait – and the crew at Soul Jazz have clearly used all that time to dig way past the obvious on the New Orleans scene, and come up with a really incredible batch of all-funky cuts all the way through! Even if you've got a dozen other New Orleans funk collections in your collection, you'll find plenty here to win you over – as the package goes out of its way to pull cuts from rare singles and under-reissued material – then wraps the whole thing up with the usual extra-thorough Soul Jazz approach to liner notes and details. And while some of the names are familiar here, they're nicely interspersed with lesser-known folks who keep things fresh – making for a winning lineup that really sets a new standard for this sort of set. Titles include "The Twitch" by Danny White, "Street Parade" by Earl King, "Four Corners" by Lee Dorsey, "Hot Tamales" by The Prime Mates, "Tequila" by Allen Toussaint, "Right Place Wrong Time" by Ray J, "Gossip" by Cyril Neville, "Hold On Help Is On The Way" by G Davis & R Tyler, "Funky Belly" by Warren Lee, "I'm Mr Big Stuff" by Jimmy Hicks, "The Rubber Band" by Eddie Bo, "12 Red Roses" by Betty Harris, "What Do You See In Her" by Inell Young, "You Keep Me Hanging On" by Bonnie & Sheila, "Yeah You're Right You Know You're Right" by The Gaturs, "The Tap" by Porgy Jones, and "Bo Diddley" by Art Neville.

Mighty Sparrow — Sparromania! – Wit, Wisdom & Soul From The King Of Calypso 1960 to 1974 ... CD
Strut (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $15.99 16.99
This is definitely not your father's calypso – no living room limbo or Harry Belafonte cliches – and instead, a smoking batch of Caribbean grooves from The Mighty Sparrow! Sparrow was very much on the edge of the best styles in the 60s and early 70s – and although his basic groove might be termed calypso, he also brought in plenty of Cuban, Haitian, and Jamaican rhythms to his music too – as well as an occasional does of American soul! Like some of the best early sounds from Kingston, the grooves here often echo a deeper R&B sensibility, turned towards island rhythms – and really hit home strongly by Sparrow's wonderful vocals – as catchy, compelling, and charming as some of the best US singers of the time – with touches of the wit of Oscar Brown Jr, the warmth of Lou Rawls, the swing of a young Marvin Gaye, and the spookiness of Screamin Jay Hawkins! This massive collection is the first to really dig through his older records to pull out the best tunes – just the kind of special focus we'd expect from the Strut label, with a wicked track selection and great notes too! Titles include "Bongo", "Calypso Boogaloo", "Zinah", "Fool Fool Fool", "Ah Diggin Horrors", "Jook For Jook", "Sparrow Come Back Home", "Slave", "She's Been Gone Too Long", "Congo Man", "Ten To One Is Murder", and "Kennedy & Kruschev".

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou — Cotonou Club ... CD
Strut (UK), 2011. New Copy .... $11.99 14.98
The first record in years from these Afro Funk giants – but don't hold it against them, as the whole thing's pretty darn wonderful! There's a rich, vibrant sound here that really lives up to the group's legacy from years back – and production is right on the money to keep things right – recorded in Paris with a relatively stripped-down quality – just right for bringing all the tight rhythms of the set right to the foreground, without any overdone mass market cliches to hold things back! Even the appearances of a few famous guest stars can't get in the way of the energy of the Orchestre – and this new album should be more than proof that the originators are still alive and well. Titles include "Pardon", "Von Vo Nono", "Oce", "Koumi Dede", "Tegbe", "Lion Is Burning", "Ne Te Fache Pas", and "Gbeti Madjro".

Souljazz Orchestra — Solidarity ... CD
Strut (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
We've always loved these guys – but they really blow us away with this smoking album – a set that has them funkier than ever, yet also reaching out to embrace some great new styles too! The Afro Funk of their core is still firmly in place – yet there's also wider echoes of global sounds really being embraced by a younger generation – bits of Colombian rhythms, psychedelic inflections, and really vibrant instrumentation that helps make this record sparkle even more than their already-great previous efforts! Production is totally smoking, too – and makes the set feel more like a Soundway compilation of rare tracks from the 70s than a contemporary set – definitely another plus in our book. Titles include "Cartao Postal", "Kelen Ati Leen", "Bibinay", "Kingpin", "Conquering Lion", "Tanbou Lou", and "Nijaay".

Various — Afro Rock Vol 1 (with bonus track) ... CD
Kona/Strut, 1970s. New Copy .... $11.99 16.99
One of the best compilations of Afro Funk titles we've ever stocked – one that goes way past the obvious titles and minor hits of the 70s! Every tune on here is a gem – and the package even includes a few tunes that were either previously unreleased, or which were only ever issued on cassette, a popular form in 70s Africa. The "rock" in the title should be taken lightly – because the groove here is more funky, with drums, guitar, and horns coming together in glorious rhythmic cacophony! The whole set's got a great raw sound – and titles include "Heavy Heavy Heavy" by Geraldo Pino & The Heartbeats, "Mabala" by Yahoos, "Onukpa Shawarpo" by Bokoor Band, "Sweeper Soul" by Super Mambo 69, "Yuda" by Dackin Dackino, "Envy No Good" by Mercury Dance Band, and "Fever" by Jingo. New version also features the previously unreleased bonus track "Keep On Holding On (Part 1)" by Jingo.
(The out of print classic Afro Rock compilation from Kona – reissued in partnership with Strut with a previously unreleased bonus track!)

Various — Change The Beat – The Celluloid Records Story 1979 to 1987 ... CD
Celluloid/Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 15.99
Hip hop, street soul, and lots lots more – a really revolutionary selection of music from the legendary Celluloid Records – a label that was virtually a genre unto itself! Celluloid was a key force tying together the New York downtown scene at the start of the 80s, and the postcolonial music world of Paris – and as a result, they always operated with a culture-crossing style that few other companies of the time managed to hit – merging together sounds in really unlikely ways, and often coming up with fresh new styles in the process! The label's known for crate-diggers for its hip hop releases – and to world music fans for its electric Africa work – but they also were on the forefront of New York No Wave, avant jazz, and post-punk – and somehow found a way to integrate both young new talents, and older experimentalists who still had plenty to offer. This package finally does Celluloid justice – and goes way past the few simplistic comps of the label's work over the years – training the skilled Strut ear to the whole thing, and also serving up the full story of the label in the process. Titles include "I'm The One" by Material, "Day Tripper" by Shockabilly, "Tele Apres La Meteo" by Fredinand, "Disco Rough (long version)" by Mathematiques Modernes, "Electrique Sylvie (full length version)" by Modern Guy, "Mean Machine Chant/Mean Machine" by Last Poets, "Abele Dance ('85 rmx)" by Manu Dibango, "Change The Beat (French & English)" by Fab 5 Freddy, "The Escapades Of Futura 2000" by Futura 2000 with The Clash, and "Downing Street Rock" by Winston Edwards & Blackbeard. 26 tracks in all!

Various — Disco Not Disco – Post Punk, Electro, & Leftfield Disco Classics 1974 to 1986 (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $11.99
A killer assortment of funky leftfield grooves from the late 70s and early 80s – groundbreaking work that goes way beyond conventional club, funk, and disco! The music here was light years ahead of its time, and still sounds pretty darn fresh today – a weird mix of arty, punky, and experimental modes – but all filtered down into a groove that's still catchy and compelling enough to cross over to fans of mainstream club. Many cuts here had a huge influence on house and techno modes of the mid 80s, and continue to have impact today on some of the younger, more influential groovemakers around the globe – and this single CD set is sort of a re-casting of the previous Disco Not Disco collections on Strut Records, which themselves were influential enough at the start of the current decade. CD features the tracks "Mind Your Own Business" by Delta 5, "Crunch Cake" by Isotope, "Your Life (party mix)" by Konk, "Launderette" by Vivien Goldman, "My Spine Is The Bassline (12" edit)" by Shriekback, "Contort Yourself (August Darnell rmx)" by James White & The Blacks, "Love Tempo (rmx)" by Quando Quango, "Sharevari (inst)" by A Number Of Names, "Silent Street/Silent Dub" by Maximum Joy, "Shake It Right" by Six Sed Red, and "Los Ninos Del Parque (12" mix)" by Liaisons Dangereuses.

Various — Music For Dancefloors – KPM Music Library ... CD
KPM/Strut (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $13.99 15.99
A sound library and a dancefloor? Sounds like an unlikely combination – but it results in a killer collection that's still one of the greatest sets of sound library funk we've ever heard! This massive batch of music is a great illustration of the special sound of the KPM library – a really unique outlet for British musicians in the 60s and 70s to craft records that were even more amazing than their studio sides – vintage jazz, soul, and electronic grooves – served up by a lineup that represents the cream of the crop of the UK scene of the time – plus a few surprising outside contributions as well! Titles include "That's What Friends Are For" by Alan Parker & Madeline Bell, "Second Cut" by James Clarke, "Swamp Fever" by John Cameron, "Incidental Backcloth No 3" by Keith Mansfield, "Cross Talk" by Francis Coppieters, "Jungle Baby" by Juan Erlando & His Latin Band, "Freeway To Rio" by Les Baxter, "In Advance" by Pierre Lavin, "Senior Thump" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Expo In Tokyo" by Alan Moorehouse, "Funky Express" by Duncan Lamont, "Morning 1/Morning 2" by Klaus Weiss, "Assault Course" by Johnny Pearson, and "Samba Street" by Barry Morgan. The package is a great reworking of the original KPM collection from Strut – and not only features the original funky set, but also features a bonus CD that includes a rare live performance by the KPM All-Stars in 2000 – a wicked reunion with work by James Clarke, Duncan Lamont, Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Mansfield, and other giants from the heyday of KPM.

Various — Sofrito – International Soundclash ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
No soundclash here – as the grooves are all right on the money, and fit perfectly together throughout – a blinding blend of tropical-styled sounds that really lives up to the promise of the package! Sofrito have outdone themselves here – and come up with the kinds of tracks we'd never have found in a million years of digging – mostly vintage numbers from the late 70s and early 80s tropical scene – mixed with a few contemporary numbers that seem to have an equally classic sort of vibe! The package is an instant global grooves party right from the start – and titles include "O Ti Yo" by Midnight Groovers, "Cumbia Y Tambo" by La Pesada, "Ebolo" by Bell'A Njoh, "Vibrations Groove" by Lord Shorty & Vibrations International, ""Mwekuru Muthao" by Melodica Teens Band, "La Zorra Y El Perol" by Grupo Canalon De Tinbiqui, and "The Path (Sofrito edit)" by Concept Neuf.

Various — This Ain't Chicago – The Underground Sound Of UK House & Acid 1987 to 1991 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD .... $15.99 16.99
This ain't Chicago, but the sound here owes plenty to the Windy City as well – as the collection documents an amazing criss-crossing of cultural modes that occurred when early UK house musicians took the sound of the underground into the bigger British club scene! In a way, this music's a third chapter in a journey that began when the post-disco American underground were digging the styles of the British electronic generation – then began to craft their own music with early house productions from Chicago and Detroit. These rose in such popularity with UK listeners, that by the end of the 80s, the grooves reversed themselves, and flowed back over the Atlantic – inspiring musicians like these to take the best elements of American house music, particularly Chicago acid, and push it even further into something new! And while the generation yielded plenty of lame tracks and crossover pop, this set shows the real deal – those excellent initial singles that made digging UK singles almost as great as US ones, at least for a brief while. 2CD package features 24 titles that include "Take Me High (mansion mix)" by Colm III, "Show Me What You Got (acid mix part 1)" by SLF, "Jealousy & Lies" by Julian Jonah, "Where's The Love Gone (rmx)" by Julie Stapleton, "Safety Zone" by Exocet, "Pressure Dub" by Ability II, "1666 (pyro-maniac mix)" by MD Emm, "Free To Be" by Window Smashers, "Twin Tub" by Return Of The Living Acid, and "Crashing" by Baby Ford.

new Fanga & Maalem Abdullah Guinea — Fangnawa Experience ... CD
Strut (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99 Out Of Stock
A bold step forward for Fanga – and a set that's easily the group's greatest record ever! This time around, Fanga are teamed with guembri player Maalem Abdalla Guinea – a musician who seems to have unlocked some rich new energy in the group – and a sound that takes them past their already-great groove! Familiar Afro Funk modes are still in place, but the tracks are longer and a lot more open too – leaving great room for Guinea's rootsy instrumentation – and creating this spontaneous feeling to the record that really hints at the genius of Fanga in a live setting. The whole thing's proof that the right Afro Funk groups are really finding new ways of expression these days – and the set features the tracks "Noble Tree", "Gnawi", "Kelen", and "Kononi". CD features additional tracks "Wouarri" and "Dounya".

new Rodion GA — Lost Tapes ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99 Out Of Stock
Amazing electronics from the Romanian scene – mostly unreleased music from techno whiz Rodio Ladislau Rosca – all with a vibe that's somewhere between the best work of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream! The cuts are all spare, with lots of great keyboards – and the recording style has this spacey, echoey quality that's mighty nice too – giving the music a spaciousness that takes it past some of the colder modes of the European scene at the end of the 70s, with more of the warmth you might have gotten from German groups of the earlier electronic years. There's no vocals on any of these numbers – which leaves even more room for cool sounds and great keyboards – plus a fair bit of fuzzy guitar as well! Titles include "Diagonala", "Salt 83", "Zephyr", "Imagini Din Vis", "In Linistea Noptii", "Alpha Centauri", and "Caravane".

new Ebo Taylor — Appia Kwa Bridge ... CD
Comet/Strut (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Proof that Afro Funk never dies – as long as you know where to look! This set by Ebo Taylor is a contemporary recording, but it's got a damn sharp groove – and hits as hard as any dusty old gem you might find from the 70s – with just the right production to make all the core elements come out right! Comet Records had a hand in the production, and they work the same kind of magic with Taylor that they've used on Tony Allen – really helping an Afro Funk legend come back out on top, and avoid any of the watered-down world music cliches that might otherwise hurt a record like this. Rhythms are super-funky, and produced with some great grit in the grooves – and Taylor's vocals and guitar sound wonderful – if anything, only deepened with the passage of time. Titles include "Ayesama", "Abonsam", "Barrima", "Appia Kwa Bridge", "Assomdwee", and "Yaa Amponsah".

new Ebo Taylor — Love & Death ... CD
Strut (UK), 2010. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99 Out Of Stock
A brilliant new album from legendary Ghanaian performer Ebo Taylor – recorded in Berlin and backed by members of Poets Of Rhythm and others from that city's loose collective of international players dubbed the Afrobeat Academy – and the set itself is a great mix of classic Ghana grooves and timeless Afro Funk! Guitarist and vocalist Taylor has roots in the highlife style from the late 50s through the 60s, but from the 70s onward he's been deftly blending styles – from traditional Ghanaian sounds, to Afro funk, jazz and soul. This excellent album for Strut Records carries on that adventurous spirit wonderfully. It's also the first ever Ebo Taylor album to receive an international release, reason enough to celebrate, all the more so given the creative high point the album is! Titles include "Nga Nga", "African Woman", "Love And Death", "Mizin", "Aborekyair Aba", "Obra" and the instrumentals "Victory" and "Kwame".

new Various — Nigeria 70 – Lagos Jump – Original Heavyweight Afrobeat Highlife & Afro Funk ... CD
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A killer follow-up to the earlier Nigeria 70 compilation on Strut Records – a second set that digs even deeper than before, and one that shows a huge range of Nigerian grooves from the 70s! The styles here go way beyond familiar Afro Funk – and the rhythms here are often quite complicated – rootsy at times, modern at others – and served up in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation that dances together wonderfully! Most numbers have vocals, but those are often delivered as rhythmically as the instrumentation – and the package is filled with under-reissued gems that make the package an essential addition to any collection of global grooves. As with other sets on the newly-revived Strut label, there's full notes on the music and track-by-track details – all supporting a set list of 16 titles that includes "Everybody Likes Something Good" by Ify Jerry Krusade, "Yabis" by Sir Shina Peters & His International Stars, "Onyame" by Ashanti Afrika Jah, "Ezuku Buzo" by Bola Johnson & His Eazy Life Top Beats, "African Dialects" by Peter King, "You Are My Heart" by Rex Williams, "Hot Tears" by The Immortals, "Dododo (Ekassa No 1)" by Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maestros, "Happy Survival" by Ifeanyi Eddie Okwedy & His Maymores Dance Band, "Tug Of War" by The Faces, "Ire Africa" by Chief Checker, and "Eddie Quansa" by Peacocks Guitar Band.

Strut (UK), 1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $15.99 16.99 Out Of Stock
Twenty years of music from this cruical Chicago label – one of the few Windy City imprints to continue to fly the flag of house music in the years since the early days of the 80s! When Cajmere first served up "Percolator" back in the early 90s, we were a bit unsure – almost thinking it was the end of Chicago house, with its frenzied rhythm and gimmicky vocal. Yet over the past two decades, we've come to realize that Cajmere and his Cajual imprint have come to be the saviors of the music that's made our city great – still keeping house music in its core, basic elements – without any of the too-commercial modes that seeped in at so many other corners! The Cajmere groove is always dead-on, straightforward, and plenty darn soulful – proof that great house music continues to flourish if you know where to look. 2CD set features a massive 22 long tracks – with cuts that include "Percolator (orig mix)" by Cajmere, "Brighter Days (Louie's Masters At Work mix)" by Cajmere with Dajae, "Feelin Kinda High (voc)" by Cajmere with Terence FM, "Beyond" by Glenn Underground, "Le Fusion" by Gemini, "Midnight (orig mix)" by Cajmere with Walter Philips, "U Got Me UP (Danny Tenaglia's club version)" by Dajae, "I Can't Take It" by Andre Harris, and "Say U Will (orig mix)" by Cajmere.

new Mulatu Astatke — Mulatu Steps Ahead ... CD
Strut (UK), 2010. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99 Out Of Stock
Steps Ahead is just about the least we could say about Ethio jazz funk genius Mulatu Astatke – he not only remains on a creative high point after so many years, he takes a couple more giant strides on Mulatu Steps Ahead for Strut Records! To put it simply, the music Mulatu makes here more than lives up to his legendary work from the height of late 60s & early 70s years. The material was recorded in sessions in Boston and London, playing with the Either/Orchestra on the Boston sessions, plus members of the Heliocentrics and others – really hitting on diverse styles throughout, from spacious and eclectic jazz, to the classic Addis Ababa nightclub sound, to grittier kinda crime jazz soundtrack styles and some Afro Latin inspirations. Wonderful work that's well worth Mulatu's legacy! Titles include "Radcliffe", "Green Africa", "The Way To Be Nice", "Assosa", "I Faram Gami I Faram", "Mulatu's Mood", "Ethio Blues", "Boogaloo" and "Motherland".

new Various — Calypsoul 70 – Caribbean Soul 1969-1979 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $11.99 17.98 Out Of Stock
A cool collection of funky grooves from the Caribbean – tracks that take a strong influence from American soul and funk, then blend it heavily with hip rhythms from the islands! A few of the names here are familiar, but most are relatively obscure – and put together, the tunes on the set illustrate a hugely under-tapped scene that's filled with wonderful tunes – tracks awash in jazzy rhythms, skittish percussion, and a range of styles that move past much more familiar Jamaican sounds from down south. Drums here are often quite heavy, and matched by other percussion as well – not to mention jagged guitar lines and bass bits that really send the whole thing home! As with other Strut compilations, the overall package and liner notes are as great as the music on the disc – and the set features a total of 20 tracks that include "Of My Hands" by The Goretti Group, "Calypsoul" by Clarence Curvan & His Mod Sounds, "You Tink It Sorf" by Lancelot Layne, "Magic Fever" by Magic Circle Express, "Independent Bahamas" by Biosis Now, "Move Up Blackman" by Tyrone Taylor, "Guanavaco" by Marius Cultier, "Raycan" by The Hondells, "You Don't Love Me" by Gemini Brass, "Woman" by Sambo, "We See Jah" by Wadadli Experience, "Freedom In Africa" by Duke, "Red Light Lady" by Ophelia, and "It's A Feeling" by St Maartens The Rolling Tones.

new Various — Disco Italia – Essential Italian Disco 1977 to 1985 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A key look at the influence of Italian rhythms on American dancefloors – tracks from a magical time when Italian artists were hitting big in clubs on the US scene! The work here is from an early 80s moment when disco was on the downturn – leaving space for Italian imports to hit our shores with bigger force than before – bringing with them a range of romping rhythms, electronic sounds, and other odd touches that really set the scene for house music to come! A few cuts here have a slightly cold feel – a bit like the electronic post-punk imports from the UK or Germany – but most numbers are still quite warm and soulful, yet tuned differently than American club of the time – a bit more emphasis on the beats and basslines, even though there's still plenty of vocals and keyboards as well. The set features full notes on this time and the music by Bill Brewster – author of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life – and it features a great array of under-reissued tracks, including "Dreaming" by Rainbow Team, "Burning Love" by DD Sound, "Love" by Firefly, "Wojtyla Disco Dance (part 1)" by Freddy The Flying Ducthman & The Sistina Band, "Brazilian Dancer (DJ version)" by Kasso, "Tha Kee Tha Tha" by Five Letters, "Flor De Coca" by Number One Ensemble, "E Fatto E Sorde E (Maxessa edit)" by Tullio De Piscopo, "Tina Are You Ready (inst)" by Valentine, and "Do It Again" by Easy Going.

Barbara Acklin — Seven Days Of Night ... CD
Brunswick/Solid (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $22.99
An excellent second album by Barbara Acklin – and a perfect demonstration of her really unique Chicago soul talents! Acklin's really at the cusp of two generations here – at one level still with some of the sweetness of the earlier style of 60s girl soul, but at another full of the power and pride that was really flowing into other artists of the 70s – a balance that's a great summation of the unique way that Chicago artists could play both ends of the spectrum, and come up with something really unique in the process! The album includes the great cut "Am I The Same Girl", a loping soul groover that was all set to be a big single for Barbara – but for some reason, Brunswick held the tape back, stripped off the vocals, put on some piano, and released it as the instrumental "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited at the same time! Yet we still dig Barbara's version better, though – nestled here alongside other great cuts that include "Seven Days of Night", "A Raggedy Ride", "Go With Love", "Mr Sunshine", "Until You Return", and "Where Would I Go".

Baker Brothers — Time To Testify ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2011. New Copy .... $16.99
The seventh album from prolific modern funky soul gurus The Baker Brothers – a tight, thunderous mix of vocals and instrumentals that range from rawly raucous numbers to sly little groovers! The group really is a well oiled engine at this point – after a good decade or so of activity. Time To Testify is up there with their best material – a record with a nice, live feel and excellent instrumentation for the group! Chris Pedley on bass and piano, Paul Young on sax and flute, Geoff Lai on guitar and lead vox, Rich Baker on drums & percussion, Ted Carrasco on drums and percussion, and Sott Baylis on trumpet, Rhodes, Hammond, clavinet and Moog. Includes "Make Your Move", "Painting Pictures", "Once I Had A Friend", "Patience", "Feeding Freddie", "Pieces Of The Puzzle", "Hang Loose", "The Bottom Rung", "The Young Patter", "Snap Back", "Head South", "Genki Strut" and more. 16 tracks on the CD version.

Eddie Daniels — This Is New ... CD
Takt (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $34.99
A surprisingly great early set from reedman Eddie Daniels – quiet different than the smooth jazz he cut famously in later years! This tasty session was recorded in Japan with the quartet of trumpeter Terumasa Hino – whose presence here really helps shape the overall sound of the record, and opens up a rich new solo space for Daniels on tenor sax and clarinet! The record's got a laidback groove that's soulful, but nicely offbeat – a bit like some of the more obscure acoustic sides coming out on Prestige at the time, with a bit of modal and a bit of funky playing – and in addition to Hino's trumpet, the set also features piano from Masabumi Kikuchi and drums from Motohiko Hino! Titles include "The Strut", "Thirsty Soul", "Wistful Moment", and "Why Did I Choose You".
(Special on-demand CD from Sony Japan – done in very limited quantities, as a way of reissuing these rare jazz gems – and still with full color artwork!)

Jack DeJohnette — Special Edition (Special Edition/Tin Can Alley/Inflation Blues/Album Album) (4CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4 CDs .... $31.99 35.98
A quadruple-header of a set – four great albums together in one cool box! First up is the first album from the great Special Edition group of drummer Jack DeJohnette – a wickedly sharp record that's as equally tight on the reeds as it is on the drums! The album features brilliant work on tenor and bass clarinet from David Murray, and equally nice alto from Arthur Blythe – both criss-crossing and soaring out effortlessly in each others' company – amidst complex rhythmic impulses from DeJohnette on drums, and both bass and cello from Peter Warren. Jack also plays a bit of piano and melodica as well – and titles include "One For Eric", "Zoot Suite", "Central Park West", "India", and "Journey To The Twin Planet". On Tin Can Alley, the great Chico Freeman really shines with drummer Jack DeJohnette – lending his tenor, flute, and bass clarinet to the album – and helping make it a really reed-heavy affair! John Purcell's also in the frontline with Chico – playing alto, baritone, and flute – and in addition to Peter Warren's bass and cello, the album Jack DeJohnette also plays drums, congas, piano, and organ too! The range of instrumentation almost echoes some Chicago AACM roots at times – but with that tighter focus that musicians like Jack were bringing to their work at ECM – and titles include "Riff Raff", "The Gri Gri Man", "I Know", and "Pastel Rhapsody". Inflation Blues is a record that bristles with energy right from the start – spurred on by the creative rhythms that have always made Jack DeJohnette one of the most inventive drummers of his time! The group features a triple-threat lineup with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano sax, and John Purcell on alto, baritone, flute, and clarinet – especially nice at points when the reedmen shift and turn with sharp edges learned from the earlier avant years, yet given a nice focus here under DeJohnette's leadership. Jack penned all original tunes for the set, and there's a depth to his writing that really marks a move forward – possibly some of his richest musical statements on record ever! Titles include "Ebony", "Inflation Blues", "Slowdown", and "The Islands". Album Album is a record that really dives deep with a rich mix of creative rhythms and inventive horn lines! The album still has Jack staying true to his more avant roots – working with tenor from David Murray, alto and soprano sax from John Purcell, baritone and tuba from Howard Johnson, and bass from Rufus Reid – a lineup that's a bit bigger than on other Special Edition albums, and which is used to fill in even more colors and deeper elements than before. Some of the tunes are wonderfully vivid in approach – and titles include "Festival", "Third World Anthem", "Zoot Suite", "Ahmad The Terrible", and "New Orleans Strut".

Deodato — Do It Again – The Fantastic Jazz Funk Of Eumir Deodato – Jazz Club ... CD
MCA/Jazzclub (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $8.99
A great look at an under-acknowledged period of the career of Eumir Deodato – his mid 70s sides for MCA, recorded right after his better-known records for CTI! The vibe here is quite similar to the jazzy funk that Deodato laid down in the earlier part of the decade – a bit fuller at times, thanks to some added instrumentation, but still filled with amazing work on Fender Rhodes throughout – sweetly soaring keys that come off better than most of Deodato's contemporaries on the fusion scene. The set list here is totally great – and features most of the best tracks from Deodato's four albums for MCA – all distilled down into one great 14 track collection that's filled with wonderful keyboard grooves. Titles include "Amani", "Do It Again", "Moonlight Serenade", "Havana Strut", "Whirlwinds", "Juanita", "Funk Yourself", "Adam's Hotel", "Black Widow", and "Super Strut".

Deodato — Whirlwinds/Artistry ... CD
MCA/BGO (UK), 1974. New Copy .... $15.99 20.98
Two post-CTI gems from Deodato – back to back on a single CD! Whirlwinds is sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's right out front on a range of electric keys that get some great support from John Tropea's finely-honed work on guitar! Titles include "Havana Strut", "Whirlwinds", "West 42nd Street", and a nice cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again". And heck, even the album's version of Glen Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" manages to come off like a funk tune! Artistry is a live set from Deodato – but one that's very much in the mode of his best CTI studio sessions – with soaring, over the top keyboard work that's totally great – backed by some tightly compressed guitar, bass, and drums, with just enough funk in the mix to keep things interesting! As with other Deodato records from the time, there's a mix of moods here that comes together nicely – a range that goes past his easy hits, and shows Deodato to be one of the hippest, most soulful keyboard talents of his generation. Titles include a great version of "Super Strut" that grooves for over 8 minutes, and which has some firey guitar that really competes with Deodato's work on the keys – and other tracks include "Farewell To A Friend", "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Rio Sangre", and "Jivin".

Dojo Cuts — Take From Me ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
A tremendous step forward for Dojo Cuts – a record that has the funky ensemble from down-under really finding their own groove – and coming across with a sound that's a lot tighter than before! We liked these guys from the start – but this time around, they really win us over even more – with a funky focus on the rhythms that really sets the record on fire from the very first note – and helps provide a wonderful platform for the all-soul vocals of Roxie Ray – who herself sounds a lot deeper and more mature than before! There's nothing we love more than watching a group grow up over the years – and this sweet second set definitely has Dojo Cuts doing just that – returning all our previous faith in them with even greater grooves. Titles include "El Entro", "Mamacita", "In This Moment", "Sonny's Strut", "I'd Rather Go Blind", "Take From Me", "What Do I Have To Do", and "Easy To Come Home".

Frank N Dank — 48 Hours (2CD edition – with instrumentals) ... CD
Digi Pop/Delicious Vinyl, 2003. New Copy 2CDs .... $15.99 17.98
The timeless sounding underground classic debut of Frank-N-Dank – which is a strong first full length statement for the duo – and a significant milestone in the J Dilla production canon! It has more of a straight up, street ready rhyme style than was typical for Dilla productions at the time – with smoky, pulsing production and unpredictable beats. The rhymes are stronger than we gave 'em credit for a decade or so back – and the raw electro funky bounce provided by Dilla really opened us up to how diverse his style could be outside of the jazzy/funky/soul beats he'd laid down in the preceding couple of years! Tracks include "Rite Bites", "Street Life", "Pimp Strut", "Where The Parties At?", "All Seasons", "Take Dem Clothes Off" and more. This 2013 version features a second disc with Dilla's instrumentals.

Quincy Jones & Ray Brown — Adventurers ... CD
Symbolic/Varese, 1970. New Copy .... $12.99 13.98
A rare groover from the team of Ray Brown and Quincy Jones – a smoking little set that completely revises the music for The Adventurers! The original score for the film featured tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim, played by Deodato – a great combination at the time, but completely different than the heavy funk laid out here by Ray and Quincy! The pair really cook things up strongly here – hitting some of the best funky vibes you'd hear on Quincy Jones scores from the late 60s and early 70s – or some of Ray Brown's funkiest jazz sessions of the time. Brown leads the band, and the set's produced by Quincy – who also arranged some tracks – with help from JJ Johnson, Tom Scott, and Jimmy Jones too. Titles include "Fat Cat Strut", "Polo Pony", "El Lobo's Marc", "Wishful Thinking", "Love Theme From The Adventurers", and "Go Down Dying".

John Lee & Gerry Brown — Still Can't Say Enough ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. New Copy .... $15.99
Great work from John Lee and Gerry Brown – a pair of fusion stalwarts who added key help to a number of classic 70s sessions for other artists – and got to make a rare few albums like this on their own! Lee's on bass and Brown's on drums, and the pair are in perfect time throughout – working with Skip Drinkwater production, which helps them find even more focus than before, and shake off some of the more jamming aspects of their rock-fusion performances with others – a move that helps them come up with a wonderfully soulful sound in the process – very much in the best Drinkwater soul jazz style of the time! Some cuts have vocals that get nice and soulful – from Donald Smith, CP Alexander, and Tawatha Agee – and titles include the brilliant "Love The Way You Make Me Feel" – plus "Freeze It Up", "Breakin", "Rise On", "Funky Now", "Strut N Get Up", and "Down The Way".

Pony Poindexter — Gumbo! (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1963. New Copy .... $16.99
A stone classic from New Orleans reedman Pony Poindexter – a set that's steeped in tradition, but also has a groovy feel too – and a date that features Pony on both alto and soprano sax! The latter instrument is especially nice, played with echoes of earlier Crescent City modes, but updated strongly with more of a modal 60s energy – almost a Coltrane-like inspiration, but in very different ways than Trane might offer up. Other players on the date are great too – and include Booker Ervin's tenor at is soulful 60s best, plus Gildo Mahones on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Jimmy Smith on drums – all working with some very unusual rhythms that really make the set stand out from other Prestige dates of the time! Titles include "Happy Strut", "Gumbo Filet", "Front O Town", "Back O Town", "French Market", and "Creole Girl".

Dwight Sykes — Dwight Sykes – Songs Vol 1 ... CD
Peoples Potential, Early 80s. New Copy .... $9.99
A host of cool cuts from Dwight Sykes – an 80s soul artist, but one who clearly draws lots of inspiration from the laidback vibe of "Summer Madness"! There's a wonderful slow funk feel to these tracks – rhythms that strut around with an easygoing feel, while keyboards space out over the top and get nice and freaky – so much so that only two of the album's tracks have vocals, and even those have a great spacey sound that really fits in with the keys! Production has a nice rough edge, which really works great with the slight splash of the beats and keyboards – a nicely gritty take on 80s instrumental soul – with cuts that include "The Good Times", "Where Ever You Are", "Bye", "That's The Way Love Is", "In The Life Zone", "After Midnight", and "You That I Need".

Undercover Express (Osaka Monaurail) — Introducing Undercover Express (aka Amen Brother) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2008. New Copy .... $29.99
One of our favorite funk combos take on a host of gems from the past – all classic soul and funk numbers that really expand the sound of Osaka Monaurail! The group first got their start doing a great riff on the sound of James Brown – but here, they move into Memphis soul, Chicago funk, and more – working their well-honed instrumental talents over a host of killer cuts that explode in fresh new versions! Unlike other records, where Ryo Nakata sings, this time around he's just leading the group and playing keyboards – but that shift is OK with us, as it gives the horns and guitar lots more space to do their thing. Titles include "Cafe Regio's", "Supershine #9", "Chocolate Buttermilk", "Amen Brother", "Get Down", "Get Ready", "Little Old Money Maker", "Message To Love", "Divertissement", and "Hey Jude". CD also features 3 bonus live tracks – "Tighten Up", "Truck Turner", and "Soulful Strut". Note: This is a different package for the album Amen Brother – which was issued under the Osaka Monaurail name.

Record Kicks (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
Surprisingly deep soul from Hannah Williams – a singer who seems like just your run of the mill local talent on the cover – but who comes across with the smoking sound of some legendary southern soul diva on the record! The band and the backing is pretty great too – way more than just a rehash of older soul modes – and instead a contemporary approach that has subtle strains of some of the more interesting funk elements that have percolated globally of late – all fused together by Diesler, who's kind of the "artistic director" of the set – and who gives the music a Tru Thoughts sort of complexity. Titles include "The Kitchen Strut", "Work It Out", "Washed Up", "Don't Tell Me", "Things To Come", "Get It", and "Do Whatever Makes You Feel Hot".

Various — Beginners Guide To Jazz Funk (3CD set) ... CD
Blue Note/Nascente (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3 CDs .... $14.99
They might well call this a Beginners Guide To Blue Note Jazz Funk – given that most of the tracks here are from the hip 70s run at Blue Note Records! The vibe is wonderful – funky and soulful, but definitely with jazz at the forefront – as older soloists were finding new ways to reach their audiences through electric grooves – and younger players were making a huge name for themselves through a very inventive approach to their work! Kay Dee, 1970s. New Copy .... $12.99 15.98
A treasure trove of rare funk – all hand-picked by Keb Darge and Kenny Dope, two names we trust more than most when it comes to rare funk! Most of these tracks are of 70s vintage, and a handful are presented here in new edits by Kenny – not remixes, and very much in the spirit of the original 45s – but re-presented in ways that bring up the funkiest bits from the bottom! The sound quality here is great – often much clearer than the original 45s – and the package is even better than the first set – a much-needed dose of the funky Kay Dee sound for the CD market. Various — Sehorn's Soul Farm – 50 New Orleans Soul Classics ... CD
Charly (UK), 1960s. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99 16.98
A massively expanded version of the original Sehorn's Soul Farm compilation – one that adds in a huge amount of bonus tracks, and makes for an even more essential batch of New Orleans soul! The cuts here all come from the original Sansu empire formed by Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint – a key force in New Orleans soul of the 60s – thanks to Toussaint's amazing ear for new talent, and bold new styles of production in the studio! Toussaint went onto much greater fame on bigger labels in the 70s, but his work here is still his best – a hard-edged, uniquely rhythmic groove that forever changed the sound of soul in the Crescent City. The 2CD set brings together material that appeared on both original Sehorn's Soul Farm collections in the 80s – mostly culled from labels like Sansu and Deesu, plus bits from other sources – and it also adds in 18 more bonus cuts too, which makes for a whopping batch of 50 New Orleans soul classics. Cuts include "Sadie Mae" by Joe Haywood, "Did You Have Fun" by Willie West, "A Lady" by Warren Lee, "Chicken Strut" by The Meters, "Look Way Back" by Diamond Joe, "Man Of The Street" by Ironing Board Sam, "How To Pick A Winner" by Diamond Joe, "Lovely Woman" by Eldrige Holmes, "Hotcha Mama" by Ernie K Doe, "Mean Man" by Betty Harris, "Hercules" by Aaron Neville, "Sinner Girl" by Benny Spellman, "Blues Tears & Sorrow" by John Williams, and "Star Revue" by Warren Lee.

Various — Sounds Of The Times – From The KPM & Conroy Music Libraries 1970 to 1977 ... CD
KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. Plus, the set list is huge – 25 tracks in all, running for well over 70 minutes – truly the treasure trove we promised at the start of this review, with titles that include "Soul For Sale" and "Tycoon" by Keith Mansfield, "Block Buster" and "Head In The Clouds" by Johnny Pearson, "Loco Motion" and "Soul Foot Strut" by Dave Gold, "Traffic" and "Challenger" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Short Cut" by James Clarke, "Heavy Traffic" by James Cameron, "Speculation" by David Lindup, "Vegas To LA" by Dick Doerschuk, "Tough Assignment" by Chris Gunning, "Speedway" by Nick Ingman, "String Boogie" by Brian Bennett, and "The Double Take" by Steve Gray.

Various — World Needs Changing – Street Funk & Jazz Grooves 1967 to 1976 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
The world needs changing – and plenty of these tunes may well do it – thanks to infectious grooves and some very righteous message-oriented lyrics! The set's a great document of the positive, progressive energy going down in soul music during the heady days of the late 60s and early 70s – a time when the country was changing heavily, and the music was as well – moving into new styles, themes, and ideas – expressed here by a hip batch of cats who were working on some of the best indie labels of the underground! This set offers up a great mix of cool cuts from a variety of sources – a few gems from the Flying Dutchman label, some other obscure 45s, and even a few southern soul numbers that fit surprisingly well with the northern vibe of most of these numbers. Titles include "Walk Tall" by Esther Marrow, "Get Ready/Uptight" by Little Eva Harris, "All Power To The People (part 1)" by Joe Savage & The Soul People, "Soul Patrol" by The Original Soul Patrol, "Do It (inst)" by Johnny Griffith, "The World Needs Changin" by Hank Jacobs & Don Malone, "Sea Saw Affair" by Cesar 830, "Love Tones" by Melvin Sparks, "That's The Way It Goes" by Elaine Armstrong, "This Is The Me Me" by Brenda Jones with Groove Holmes, "Sissy Strut N American Woman" by The Willard Posey Reunion, and "Rudypoot" by Huck & The Soul Patrol.

Young & Company — I Like What You're Doing To Me (with bonus tracks) ... CD
1980. New Copy .... Around July 10, 2013
Young & Company were an obscure New Jersey group who struck big momentarily with the single "I Like What You're Doing To Me", and got a brief chance to cut this one and only album for Brunswick as a follow-up. The album's an interesting one, because it came at a time when the last-gasping Brunswick was showing a real talent for cutting underground cuts – mostly issued on 12" singles, and rarely drawn out to a full LP like this. There's kind of a strong roller skating groove on the best cuts – moving along at a good midtempo pace with compressed instrumentation on guitar and keyboards, never too over the top, and definitely not disco. You can hear that to best effect on the big hit "I Like What You're Doing To Me", but the album's got plenty of other nice cuts, like "Strut Your Stuff", "Checking You Out", "Love Me All Night", and "Mellow Mood".

new Gerry Mulligan — Gerry Mulligan 63 – The Concert Jazz Band/Concert Jazz Band ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1960/1961. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two great examples of Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band – back to back on a single CD! First up is Concert Jazz Band 63 – the sound of Gerry Mulligan in the early 60s – and one of the best records by his larger than usual Concert Jazz Band! Given Gerry's piano-less experiments of the 50s, it's surprising to actually have him as the pianist on this session – hitting the keys with a nice light touch, so that the larger horn section can take over most of the tunes – a beautifully-arranged ensemble who have a feel that's lighter than some of the groups of the 50s – such as the Kenton ensemble – yet one that's equally modern at times! The lineup is wonderful – with Clark Terry and Nick Travis on trumpets, Willie Dennis and Bob Brookmeyer on trombones, and Gene Quill, Gene Allen, and Eddie Caine on saxes – plus guitar from Jim Hall, bass from Bill Crow, and drums from Gus Johnson. Titles include "Big City Life", "Bridgehampton South", "My Kind Of Love", "Pretty Gypsy", "Bridgehampton Strut", and "Big City Blues". The second album features great large group material from Gerry Mulligan – and a record that definitely defines the sound of his famous Concert Jazz Band of the early 60s! The group features a four part sax section – headed by Mulligan, with other players that include Zoot Sims on tenor, Gene Allen on baritone, Gene Quill on alto, and Dick Meldonian on alto – and the set also features work by Nick Travis and Conte Candoli on trumpets, and Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone and trombone – shading in some nice colors to the group's tone-heavy approach! Titles include "Out Of This World", "Sweet & Slow", "Bweebida Bobbida", and "Manoir Des Mes Reves".

new Pony Poindexter with Booker Ervin — Gumbo! (plus unissued bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige, 1963. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
But almost even better, the set also features 8 more bonus tracks – all previously unissued! Three are from the sessions for Gumbo – but the rest are from an unusual 1963 date that features the tenor of Booker Ervin with the organ of Larry Young and drums of Jerry Thomas – a really cool small combo group in the vein of Young's early Prestige work. Additional titles include "Wade In The Water", "Autumn Leaves", "Old Folks", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Absotively Posalutely", and "Blue & Sentimental".

new Chester Thompson — Mixology ... CD
Doodlin, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 15.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavy Hammond from the mighty Chester Thompson – a smoking soul jazz set that's a real return to the sound of his Powerhouse album from the 70s! Thompson's jazz chops have only gotten better with age – and although he's certainly got a strong resume in funk and soul, we're really impressed at his dexterity on the organ here – working out these quick changes and long-spun lines that would be right at home on mid-60s Prestige Records! Yet most of the tunes are nice and tight, too – never too overindulgent, and a nice balance between groove and solo space as well . Thompson works here with Barry Finnerty on guitar, Joel Behrman on trumpet, and Howard Wiley on tenor – and Lonnie Smith guests on one track too! Titles include "Medallion", "Clockwise", "A Subtle One", "Sweet Sixteen", "Speak No Evil", "Sista Strut", "Mr T", and a nice version of "Moontrane".

new Various — Stax Of Funk Vol 2 – More Funky Truth ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mountain of funk from one of the greatest soul labels of all time! Stax is known round the world over for their soulful work – by singers like Otis Redding or Carla Thomas, and instrumental tunes by Booker T & The Mgs – but the label was also quite a funky powerhouse – especially as the 60s drew to a close, and the management of the company got a lot hipper, and a heck of a lot more musically open-minded! This killer batch of tracks features 21 numbers from those days – including many obscure and funky tunes that only ever came out on singles, or which were recorded by artists that never made it as big as Stax stars from earlier years. The result of all that obscurity is an extremely fresh selection of tracks – plenty of down-n-dirty funky 45 numbers, played by hip Memphis combos, and featuring some really deep soul vocals. Titles include "Dark Skin Woman" by Sir Mack Rice, "Ain't No Sin" by John Kasandra, "Bump & Boogie" by The Wrecking Crew, "Shame On The Family Name" by Calvin Scott, "Cool Strut" by Bernie Hayes, "Bump Mean" by Sir Mack Rice, "Soul Machine" by Reggie Milner, "How Can You Mistreat The One You Love" by Katie Love, "Cold Blooded" by The Bar Kays, "Do The Side Saddle" by Rufus Thomas, "Stay Away From That Monkey" by Jimmy McCracklin, "Them Hot Pants" by Lee Sain, "Devil In A Man" by Stu Gardner, "Curcuits Overloaded" by Inez Foxx, "From Toys To Boys" by The Emotions, "Got It Together (parts 1 & 2)" by Rudy Robinson & The Hungry Five, and "Crosscut Saw" by Albert King.

new Fred Anderson — Black Horn Long Gone ... CD
Katalyst/Southport, 1993. New Copy .... $9.99 11.99 Out Of Stock
A long-lost session from Chicago tenorist Fred Anderson – recorded in the early 90s, but only just released! The album's a treasure from a time when Anderson wasn't as well-documented as he's been in recent years – and it's got a beautifully open sort of sound – just a spare trio, with the great Malachi Favors on bass and Arajamu on drums. Anderson's tone is wonderful – deeply soulful, and almost more focused than on some other records – burning with a low flame intensity that reminds us of similar late 60s moments from Albert Ayler or Kalaparusha – points when they're more inside than usual, but in a great way. Favors' bass work is a treat, as always – and gets plenty of space to shine here – and in a way, it may well be the understated drums of Arajamu that make the whole session click so nicely. Titles include "Ode To Clifford Jordan", "Wandering", "Our Theme", "Saxoon", "Three On Two", "Bernice", "The Strut Time", and "Malachi's Tune".

Calhoun's musical vision keeps things united throughout, so that the voice of the leader still comes forth strongly on the album – and titles include "Brother Will", "King Tut Strut", "Naima", "Evidence", "Spectrum", and "Etcetera".

Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". new Benny Golson — Other Side Of Benny Golson ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
A smokin' hard bop side from a sort of amalgamation of players who played in and out of the Jazz Messengers around this time, but Philly Joe's sittin' in the drummers seat, so though the rhythms cook hard, that not quite as bombastic as Bu's. We've always loved Benny Golson, and though his playing was at it's most sublime in the Jazztet, he got to stretch out just a bit more and played with just a touch more fire in other contexts, like this session. Barry Harris is on piano, with Jymie Merritt and Philly Joe rounding out the rhythm section and Curtis Fuller joins Golson in the front line for a spry quintet setting. Six tracks: "Strut time", "Jubilation", "Symptoms", "Are You Real?", "Cry A Blue Tear" and "This Night".

new Ramsey Lewis — Sun Goddess ... CD
Columbia, 1974. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99 Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the drummer in Ramsey's trio before starting his own group – and the shared relationship both artists had with producer Charles Stepney! The three were all key parts of the late 60s sound at Chess Records – but here, they've brought the same soulful energy to Columbia – working in a wider, more mature groove for the 70s – one that has Lewis' wicked Fender Rhodes lines stretching out strongly over tight, compressed, funky lines from EWF! The centerpiece of the set is the massive 7 minute "Sun Goddess", but there's lots of other nice ones like "Living For The City", "Gemini Rising", and "Jungle Strut". Funky, electric, and sublimely wonderful all the way through!

Max Roach (with Andy Bey) — Members Don't Get Weary ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99
Fantastic stuff, and a record that was virtually the blueprint for spiritual soul jazz in the 70s! Although Max Roach first rose to fame during the bop years, by the time of this set he'd really stretched out a lot – moving past initial righteous projects in the Civil Rights era, to even more progressive work with a group like this! The players are all youthful geniuses who would go onto shape the sound of 70s jazz tremendously – working here at a point that already shows their brilliance – Gary Bartz on alto, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, and even Andy Bey, who sings vocals on the title track. The overall style is very similar to Bartz's early albums on Milestone, or to some of the Music Inc records on Strata East, which feature Cowell and Tolliver. It's no surprise that Cowell contributed 3 tracks to the set – "Effi", "Equipoise", and "Abstrutions" – and the group also performs a great version of Bartz's "Libra"!

Larry Williams — That Larry Williams – The Resurrection Of Funk ... CD
Fantasy/Dusty Groove, 1978. New Copy .... $10.99 12.98
A rare funk album from west coast legend Larry Williams – very different than his heavy R&B of the late 50s, or the brief soul comeback he had with Johnny Guitar Watson in the 60s – and instead a heavy groover with a trippy Cali sound! The record's got a sharp groove right from the start – a vibe that's a bit similar to some of the best Johnny Watson funk of the period – a slight jazzy undercurrent in the instrumentation, with wicked guitar and keyboard bits dancing around each other in the rhythms – often mixed with vocals that have a cool sort of electric feel, and topped with some great horn work from Fred Wesley on trombone and Maceo Parker on alto sax! Rudy Copeland plays keyboards on the album alongside Williams, the the set's got a bit of the feel of Rudy's lost Funky Blindman set – and in a way, also echoes the best strutting, sexy modes of Bootsy Collins too. The album's a surprising gem all the way through – a real lost chapter in Larry's career, and the kind of set that might have broken bigger, had he not died mysteriously a few years later. Titles include "Funky Force", "The Resurrection Of Funk", "One Thing Or The Other", "ATS Express", "How Can I Believe", and "Can't Dance To The Music (If It Ain't Got Funky Rhythm)".

A wicked batch of funky work from Wool – a combo led by Ed and Claudia Wool, who really hit the hippest end of the late 60s rock mode ont his set! The title is filled with jamming riffs and strutting rhythms – not so much break-heavy rock, but work that has an overall funky feel all the way through – even if the instrumentation and vocalizations are much more in the mode of other contemporary work of the time. Peter Lulis brings in some great funky drums to the record, and bassist Ed Barrella has a way of rolling his instrument to lead a groove into nearly every tune on the set! Mellower numbers have a bit of a folk-funk feel – and titles include "Funky Walk", "The Boy With The Green Eyes", "If They Left Us Alone Now", "Combination Of The Two", "Love Love Love Love Love", "It Was Such A Lovely Night", and "I Don't Like You Anymore".

Heavy sounds from Melbourne, Australia – a really unlikely source for soul music a few decades back, but quite a hotbed of activity in recent years! The album features Cowell on piano, and a bit of kalimba – which is mighty nice – working with bassist Tom DiCarlo and drummer Chris Brown – both younger players who really seem to get Cowell's groove, especially in the more complicated moments – of which there are a few. The set begins with two great originals by Stanley – "Cosmology" and "El Space O" – then moves into the great "Asian Art Suite", which is really one of the most unusual, exotic things we've heard from Cowell in years! That music is then offset by the long "Civil Rights Suite" – which has bolder overtones to match its social message – and the set then concludes with two more standalone compositions by Cowell – "Long Vamp" and the classic "Abstrutions".

new Harold Ousley — Harold Ousley – Tenor Sax ... CD

A legendary album from this tenor genius from Chicago – a hell of a player who emerged in the same generation as Clifford Jordan, John Gilmore, Eddie Harris, and Johnny Griffin – yet never fully got his due! The album's easily one of the most sharp-edged for the Bethlehem label – and has the power of a rare Blue Note or Prestige date from the same time – thanks partly to Harold's sharp bite in the tone of his tenor, and partly to an ultra-hip lineup that includes Charles Davis on baritone sax, Julian Priester on trombone, Phillip Wright on piano, Thomas Williams on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums. The set really showcases that mix of modern and soulful that was the best side of the Chicago scene at the start of the 60s – a vibe you'd find from a group like the MJT+3 or the Gene Shaw Quintet on Argo – even more of a surprise here on the mostly-cool Bethlehem label. Ousley penned some great originals for the record – and titles include "Porter's Groove", "Struttin To Truckin", "Paris Sunday", "Decvachan", and "Dell A Von".

Betty has a sound like nobody else – and she takes heavy drums, throbbing bass, and ripping guitars – all as a hard and funky backing for raunchy, raspy vocals that are belted out with a slinky, sexy sort of sound! Davis' vocals are unlike anyone else we can think of – easily some of the most badass work you'll ever find on record – and the tracks are a mix of hip themes about sex, gal power, and struttin your stuff – all delivered by a righteous woman who can definitely do just that! The album features the classic break tracks "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Steppin in Her I Miller Shoes", but every cut is a funky monster – including "Ooh Yea", "In The Meantime", "Your Man My Man", and "Anti Love Song". A great one if you dig hard female soul, heavy funky guitars, or both at the same time! This beautiful reissue features top-shelf sound, extensive notes and photos, and previously unissued bonus tracks that include "Come Take Me", "I Will Take That Ride", and "You Won't See Me In The Morning".

new Cult — Mail Must Go Through (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Starburst (Japan), 1976. New Copy .... $14.99 16.98 Out Of Stock
A Bicentennial groover from The Cult – not the goth group of the 80s, but a funky west coast outfit with plenty of funk! There's a bit of an indie club vibe here, mixed in with the group's riffing and strutting rhythms – which creates a feel that's somewhere in the territory of the best P&P Records funky moments of the 70s – although with perhaps a bit of a Cali twist in the production, yet never one that's slick or uptight at all! Vocals are somewhat oddly recorded, almost flatter than the vocals – but that aspect also makes the album stand out nicely – as it's clearly not trying to cop any commercial competition, and instead is really going for its own vibe. Titles include "Back Pay", "It's Time", "Don't Give Up", "The Cult Theme", "The Rider", and "The Mail Must Go Through".

new Manu Dibango — Manu Dibango Joue Sidney Bechet – Hommage A La Nouvelle Orleans (with bonus DVD) ... CD
Cristal (France), 2007. New Copy 2 CDs .... $10.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
A really surprising turn for reedman Manu Dibango – a shift away from his familiar Afro Funk mode, into the realm of trad jazz for this loving tribute to American saxophonist Sidney Bechet! Given that both Bechet and Dibango reached some of their heights on the Parisian scene, the tribute really makes some great sense at the core – and it's wonderful to hear Manu's sharp-edged alto sax in such a setting – as it creates a very different feel than some of the sweeter tones of Bechet, in styles that still echo some of Manu's earlier styles too. Instrumentation includes vibes, banjo, and piano – and titles include "In A Georgia Cabin", "Dans Les Rues D'Antibes", "Petite Fleur", "Strutting With Some Barbecue", "Careless Love", "Royal Garden Blues", and "Cousin Bechet Blues". Also comes with a bonus DVD of performance too!

new Lee Konitz — Lee Konitz Nonet ... CD
Chiaroscuro, 1977. New Copy .... $11.99 12.99 Out Of Stock
A really compelling large group project from Lee Konitz – quite rare at this point in his career, and a beautiful demonstration of his many talents! Many of the numbers here are older jazz classics, but reworked by Konitz in fresh new arrangements – handled with a solid swing, yet some echoes of modern styles as well – and played by a lineup that includes Lee on alto, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, Burt Collins on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Ben Aranov on piano, Knobby Totah on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums. This mix of players from different generations really helps flesh out the feel of the set – with results that are almost like some of the Phil Woods projects of this nature. Titles include "Fourth Dimension", "Chi Chi", "Giant Steps", "April/April Too", "Who You", and "Struttin With Some Barbecue".
