Gary Smulyan with Anais Reno —
Tadd's All Folks ... CD Stateside (Denmark), 2022. New Copy ...
$9.9919.99
A really unique take on the music of jazz legend Tadd Dameron – a set that focuses entirely on vocal versions of his compositions – a side of Dameron's legacy that's sometimes overlooked! Tadd wasn't that much of a lyricist himself – although he did do two of the songs here – while others are written by Irving Reid, Bernie Hanighen, and Jack Reynolds – all with a mix of lyrics that really fit the famous modern idiom in Dameron's music – delivered instrumentally by a core combo that features Gary Smulyan on plenty of strong baritone sax solos, with Pete Malinverni on piano, David Wong on bass, and Matt Wilson on drums. Anais Reno handles all the vocals – and titles include "Sweet Life", "Never Been In Love", "Whatever Possessed Med", "Weekend", "Lovely One In The Window", and "You're A Joy". CD
A great follow-up to the first set in this series – a dozen classic dancefloor tunes, running the gamut from funky fusion to jazzy soul to 80s groove! The vibe here is definitely somewhere in the Larry Mizell/Capitol Rare mode – with a real focus on the kind of smooth groovers that really helped set the pace as the disco era drew to a close. Titles include "Always There" by Ronnie Laws, "Dominoes" by Donald Byrd, "Promise Me" by Dayton, "Music Is My Sanctuary" by Gary Bartz, "Parisienne Girl" by Incognito, "Mr Magician" by Mystic Merlin, "Groove On" by Willie Beaver Hale, "Do Me Baby" by Mel'isa Morgan, "Doin Alright" by O'Bryan, "Too Many Games" by Maze, and "Prance On" by Eddie Henderson. CD
A previously-unknown recording of two giant Verve Records stars of the 50s – captured here in a European performance, but not as part of the regular Jazz At The Philharmonic touring package! The set begins with two long tracks that are a superb showcase for the trumpet of Roy Eldridge – as Roy blows with a crisp muted style that has plenty of room to open up – with backing from the quartet of Herb Ellis on guitar, Lou Levy on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – players who continue to then back up Ella Fitzgerald for the remaining nine tracks on the album! There's a nicely intimate, less iconic presentation of Fitzgerald here – still as great as her famous Verve dates, but maybe slightly more relaxed too. Eldridge blows "Soft Winds" and "Roy's Riff" – and Ella's tracks include "Whatever Lola Wants", "All I Need Is You", "I Loves You Porgy", "Lady Be Good", "How High The Moon", and a nice take on "Alright Okay You Win". Pony Poindexter —
Poindexter ... LP Inner City, 1978. Very Good+ ...

One of the few records ever cut as a leader by Pony Poindexter – the enigmatic sax player who spent most of his better years in Europe, and missed getting the stateside recognition he deserved. This set's recorded back in the US, in California at the end of the 70s – and it's got Pony blowing easy-going solos on alto with a quartet that includes Neal Kirkwood on piano, Art Washington on bass, and Richie Goldberg on drums. The album's pretty laidback, and although the tracks lack the nice groove of some of Pony's best European material, his tone on the alto still has that raspy edge that always makes him one of our favorite players on the instrument. Titles include "Candy Pants", "Spanish Fly", "Song For D", and "Pretty Lady". LP, Vinyl record album
T Bone Walker with a very cool group – the great Preston Love on trumpet, plus Lloyd Glenn on piano and Mel Brown on guitar – along with some tight drums from the great Paul Humphrey! LP, Vinyl record album
