JR Bailey — Love & Conversation ... LP
United Artists, 1977. Very Good+ .... $24.99
JR's cut some records that have a rootsier feel – but this one features smooth modern arrangements and production by Phil Medley and Buddy Scott. The set begins with an uptempo clubby remake of "Taste of Honey", and also features a nicely grooving take on "Stella By Starlight". Other tracks include "Million To One", "Live Love & Play", "Love & Conversation", and "The Coming Of Your Love".
(Cover has light ringwear, a small cut corner, and a small mark.)

Donald Byrd, Charlie Rouse, Al Cohn, & Others — Know Your Jazz ... LP
ABC, 1956. Very Good- .... $11.99
An interesting little session from ABC – recorded as sort of an educational record about jazz, directed by Creed Taylor – but also a session that comes off well in the jam session mode of some of the Savoy sets of the same time! Players are a varied lot – and include Donald Byrd, Oscar Pettiford, Gigi Gryce, Mundell Lowe, Tony Scott, Billy Taylor, and Kenny Clarke – all working together in a set of tunes that showcases a different mode of jazz with each track, and which features a different soloist stepping out to take the lead with each new number. Titles include "In A Mellow Tone", "If I Love Again", "There Will Never Be Another You", "Laura", "But Not For Me", "How About You", and "Stella By Starlight".
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear, with some light staining along the edges.)

Eddie Campbell — Spider Eating Preacher ... CD
Delmark, 2012. New Copy .... $7.99 16.99
A cooker from this Chicago living legend – and proof that the passage of time hasn't dimmed the talents of Eddie Campbell at all! Eddie's firmly in the lead on vocals and guitar – plus a bit of harmonica, too – and the setting is mostly stripped-down, with the kind of no-nonsense contemporary blues production you'd expect from Delmark – almost a back-to-basics mode that really fits the music. Lurrie Bell guests on a few tracks – and titles include "Brownout", "I Do", "Call My Mama", "I Don't Understand This Woman", "Boomerang", "Starlight", "All My Life", "Skin Tight", and "My Friend".

Chris Connor — Chris Connor Sings Lullabys Of Birdland (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1954. New Copy .... $15.99
A great set of tracks that represents some of Chris Connor's first recordings as a solo act – a classic album originally issued as a 10" LP by the Bethlehem label – but expanded here with lots of extra tracks to make a full length record! Backing is by the trio of Ellis Larkins – a great pianist with a really moody style that perfectly fits Connor's vocals – and Chris is in fine fine form, singing with that icy tone we love so much – a bit sad, and a bit mellow, but always heartfelt, without the forced emotion of other singers of her generation. Titles include "I Hear Music", "What Is There To Say", "Why Shouldn't I", "All About Ronnie", and "Spring Is Here". CD features two bonus tracks – alternate takes on "Stella By Starlight" and "Why Shouldn't I".

Chick Corea — Expressions ... CD
GRP, 1994. Used .... $4.99
Very expressive work from Chick Corea – a solo set from the 90s, and a great reminder of his acoustic talents on the piano! Although Chick's a player you might normally associate with electric riffs and freewheeling fusion, he's also a very sensitive stylist when he wants to be – as you'll hear on the album's beautiful versions of familiar standards – played by Corea in ways that really open the tunes up, and in surprisingly short amount of time. It's almost as if Chick's brought all the open-ended modes he learned from the fusion years back to traditional jazz piano – making them work beautifully, all without any tricks or gimmicks. Titles include "Monk's Mood", "My Ship", "Lush Life", "Armando's Rhumba", "Stella By Starlight", and "This Nearly Was Mine".

Lou Donaldson — Sophisticated Lou ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $15.99
A really unique album for Lou Donaldson – especially for his early 70s run on Blue Note! The session lives up to its title by offering up a batch of soulful ballads from Lou – tunes that really focus on his sweet lines on alto, yet set amidst some larger backing arranged by Wade Marcus – which also feature some wonderful Fender Rhodes from Derek Smith in the mix! The groove is relatively gentle, and has a nicely laidback sort of feel – the kind of lush yet soulful sounds that Marcus could do so well almost a CTI/Kudu vibe, but a bit more easygoing overall. Titles include a version of Lou's "Blues Walk", plus "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "The Long Goodbye", "Stella By Starlight", "You've Changed", and "Autumn In New York".

Bill Evans — Bill Evans Trio – Live In Argentina 1979 Vol 1 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Yellow Note/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $24.99
Sublime sounds from the later years of Bill Evans – and a recording that shows just how perfectly his piano talents were finding new heights of timing and tone! Many of the tracks here are relatively mellow, and often somewhat dark as well – moody, but not in a way that's negative at all – and instead a real showcase for the darker tones and deeper feelings that Evans continued to evolve into his music in these final stretches – carried off with superb sensitivity by Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums. The recording quality is wonderful – just perfect to capture the special quality of the performance – and titles on this first volume include "Stella By Starlight", "Gary's Theme", "MASH", "We Will Meet Again", "Letter To Evan", and "Noelle's Theme".

Bill Evans — Jazzhouse Bill Evans (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Milestone (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $33.99
Beautiful live recordings from Bill Evans – recorded with his late 60s trio that included the incredible Eddie Gomez on bass, plus Marty Morell on drums – a lineup that was really taking off with Bill at the time, and learning how to make some wonderful music together! The setting is the Jazzhus Monmartre in Copenhagen, in November of 1969 – and the tracks have a nice compact feel, not as drawn out as other recordings from the venue at the time – still showing Evans to be a master of economy, even when opening up and exploring new ideas. Bill's also got a bit more punch on the piano than a few years later, which mixes the soulful and lyrical sides of his talents nicely – on titles that include "How My Heart Sings", "Autumn Leaves", "Five", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Sleepin Bee", and "Stella By Starlight".

Bill Evans & Shelly Manne — Empathy/Simple Matter Of Conviction ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1962/1966. New Copy .... $13.99 18.98
A pair of great Bill Evans albums for Verve – both a very good fit together! The cover of Empathy co-credits Bill Evans and Shelly Manne as the leader of the set – and that distinction's an important one – as the record has a slightly different feel than some of Bill's other 60s work for Verve! The sound is often a bit stronger, somewhat bolder – and although Manne's not a monster on the drums, he does have a way of directing the tunes that's a bit different than some of Evans' other piano-led albums. Bass is by Monty Budwig, who's nicely sensitive to the talents of both players – and there's almost an equally-weighted melodic feel to all three elements of the trio – which really rounds out the record nicely. Titles include "The Washington Twist", "Danny Boy", "Let's Go Back To The Waltz", "With A Song In My Heart", "Goodbye", and "I Believe In You". Simple Matter Of Conviction is a move into a more sophisticated vein than his earlier recordings! The album has him working with bassist Eddie Gomez, a hugely talented bassist that would be one of Bill's best partners during this period, and a player who added a nice dose of soul to the proceedings. The drummer is Shelly Manne, who's pretty nice, too – and really shows off some of his more sophisticated shadings here in the presence of Evans and Gomez – similar to his work on the great Empathy album. Tracks are shortish, but filled with imagination – and titles include "Unless It's You", "These Things Called Changes", "Stella By Starlight", and "A Simple Matter Of Conviction".

Benny Golson — Just Jazz ... LP
Audio Fidelity, 1957. Very Good .... $24.99
Wonderful lost work from the great Benny Golson – and some of the hippest jazz you can find in a large format group! Golson's at his modernist best here, and he's leading a tentet that includes Eric Dolphy on alto, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Grachan Moncur on trombone, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Bill Evans on piano – with a sound that's tightly arranged, but still punctuated by warm emotional passages by the star soloists. The tracks are familiar – "Out Of Nowhere", "Quicksilver", "Stella By Starlight", "Autumn Leaves" – but wait until you hear how Golson put them together!
(Gold label pressing – nice and clean. Cover has some light wear, and a bit of splitting on the top and bottom seams, which has been gently taped.)

Benny Golson — Turning Point/Free ... CD
Mercury/Universal (Germany), 1962. New Copy .... $13.99
Two albums that really show why we love Benny Golson so much! Turning Point is an incredible, and oft-overlooked album from the great Benny Golson – and one of the few early albums that really point the way to his huge run of work for decades to come! The style here is a bit looser, and more open than some of Golson's previous albums – less of a focus on arrangements, and more on the spontaneous interplay between his tenor and the crack rhythm section – which features Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – a dream lineup who really make the record sparkle. But the real star of the show is Golson – who's hitting this raspy, soulful tone he never had before – much freer of soul jazz formalities, and with a modern edge that's wonderful – as you'll hear on titles that include "Alone Together", "Turning Point", "Stella By Starlight", and "Dear Kathy". On Free, things aren't as tightly structured as on some of Benny's more arranged albums of the period – and he opens up wonderfully in a small group setting – playing in a beautifully confident tone, but with a slightly raspy edge – cutting, changing, and swinging perfectly in lines that are masterfully crafted, yet full of raw emotion. The group's a thoughtful quartet, and includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and tracks that inlcude "Sock Cha", "Shades Of Stein", "Just By Myself", and "Just In Time".

Dave Grusin — Kaleidoscope ... LP
Columbia, 1964. Very Good .... $6.99
Although you may think of Dave Grusin as the man who's only capable of putting out snoozy fusion, this excellent session from 1964 is a very tight boppish one that features great players like Thad Jones, Frank Foster, and Bob Cranshaw. Dave shows a strong early talent for arranging, and he gives the solosists a lot of room – but his piano playing's also great in itself, and has a nice warm lyrical style that's hardly hinted at in his later work. A surprisingly strong album, and with lots of nice cuts, including "Inez", "Stella By Starlight", "Kaleidoscope", and "Gozwell".
(White label 2 eye pressing. Cover has a tracklist sticker, some tape on the spine, and WGN letters in marker on back.)

new Slide Hampton — Drum Suite ... LP
Epic/Columbia, 1962. Very Good .... $4.99
One of Slide Hampton's greatest records of all time – a totally hip batch of tracks recorded with a large group that reminds us of some of Max Roach's ensembles of the early 60s! No surprise, Roach is a key part of the album – pounding away with frenzy on Hampton's 5-part "Drum Suite", and working well here on other tracks with players that include Yusef Lateef and George Coleman on tenor, Freddie Hubbard and Hobart Dotson on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Khan on bass, and both Hampton and Benjamin Jacobs-El on trombones. There's a righteous, majestic energy to most of the tracks – not just the pivotal "Drum Suite" in five parts, but also the originals "Gallery Groove" and "Fump" – plus versions of "Lover", "Our Waltz", and "Stella By Starlight".
(Yellow label pressing with a small demo sticker on one side. Cover has ring & edge wear, clear tape along the spine & seams, and some pen on the back.)

Hampton Hawes — This Is Hampton Hawes – Vol 2 The Trio (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1956. Used .... $19.99
The darkly brooding image of Hampton Hawes on the front cover of this one is a real standout in the mostly-sweet cover lineup of the Contemporary label – but it's also a great indication of the sound of the record, which is something different than most of its contemporaries! Hawes is working here at his top-shelf early best – stepping around the keys of the piano with a sense of grace and spaciousness – but also a hard-hitting, highly rhythmic mode on the left – a bit soul jazz at times, mixing earthy elements with the sweeter, lyrical moments in his solos. Rhythm is by the team of Red Mitchell and Chuck Thompson – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Blues For Jacque", Stella By Starlight", "Steeplechase", "Round Midnight", "Autumn In New York" and "Section Blues".

new Keith Jarrett — Standards Live ... LP
ECM, 1985. Very Good+ .... $7.99
After the success of Jarrett's Standards Trio recording, he revisits the format with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette – the first ever live recordings of this incredible trio in action! Like the studio recordings, this set features roomy, lyrical readings of standards, in a way, reminiscent of classic Bill Evans approaches to similar material – with a relaxed, moody spin on the proceedings. The tried-and-true material is given fresh life by the players, who roll from a looser dynamic with each player having their moments, to some tighter interplay in the heart of the tunes – and the appreciative French audience helping with the mood! 6 numbers: "Stella By Starlight", "The Wrong Blues", "Falling In Love With Love", "To Young To Go Steady", "The Way You Look tonight" and "The Old Country".

Charlie Mariano — Boston All Stars (10 inch LP) ... LP
Prestige, 1953. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 24.99
Vital early Prestige work from alto sax great Charlie Mariano – who's fronting a quintet of Boston All Stars! The record includes a couple of his more essential early compositions in "Erosong" and "Barsac" – and Charlie's solos on those are incredible on those. It's also got some tightly-swinging takes on "Stella By Starlight" and "I'm Old Fashioned" (which Mariano decisively was not!) – "Bye Bye Blues" and "Bess, You Is My Woman". Dick Twardzik's piano also stands out tremendously throughout the set – along with Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, Bernie Griggs on bass and Jimmy Wiener on drums.

Les McCann — Pretty Lady ... CD
Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1961. New Copy .... $15.99
A pretty great set from Les McCann – and quite a bit different than some of his other work of the time! This one's sub-billed as "the ballad style of Les McCann" – but it features Les playing these laidback, mellow numbers that are way different than most jazz ballads of the time – almost darkly modern moments that draw a lot from rich tones and gentle chromes – of the sort we've hardly ever heard McCann play this way, and which almost hint at some of the gentler touch he'd use on the keys during the Fender Rhodes generation – even though this one's recorded a decade before. Backing is equally thoughtful and sensitive – with Herbie Lewis on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums – and titles include two originals – "Pretty Lady" and "Dorene Don't Cry I" – plus "Django", "Stella By Starlight", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Ill Take Romance", and "Little Girl Blue".

new Stephanie Mills — Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'? (with bonus tracks) ... CD
20th Century/Big Break (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99
Soaring soul from Stephanie Mills – one of the lady's all-time hits, and for good reason too! The album really gives Stephanie's great voice a lot of focus – an upbeat, uptempo groove that sets her firmly on the dancefloor, but always with a touch of class – and a lot more depth than some of the easy come/easy go disco divas of her day! Thanks here is clearly due to the team of Reggie Lucas and Mtume – who strike strongly with the album as one of their key early productions – the sort of work that really helped push mainstream soul a bit further at the end of the 70s, and set some new tones for a lot of growth in the next decade. The keyboards on the record are almost as nice as the vocals – played by Hubert Eaves and Harry Whitaker with a nice degree of sensitivity – hardly the stronger keyboard voice of the early 80s soul scene, and often with a dose of jazziness that's really appreciated. Titles include "Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'", "Deeper Inside Your Love", "Feel The Fire", "Put Your Body In It", "Starlight", and "Don't Stop Dancin". ^This Big Break UK remastered edition has 6 bonus tracks: "Better Than Ever", ""Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin' (12" Remix)", "You Can Get Over (12" Remix)", "Put Your Body In It (12" Remix)" and more.

new James Moody — Hey It's James Moody ... LP
Argo, 1959. Very Good .... $2.99
A magnificent little album – one of James Moody's first collaborations with arranger Tom McIntosh – one of the most sensitive jazz voices of his time. McIntosh works in a world of many tones and colors – and he really pushes Moody past straighter solo approaches, into a mode where he's shaping sound into complex emotion – hitting a level of soulfulness that might never been expected in earlier years! Moody plays both tenor and flute on the session, and rhythm is by a piano-less trio that features John Gray on guitar, Eldee Young on bass, and Clarence Johnston on drums. And if that's not enough, Eddie Jefferson joins in on vocals on 2 tracks – lending his own lyrics to Moody's great original "Last Train From Overbrook", and doing a great reading of "Summertime". Other tracks include "Stella By Starlight", "Indian Summer", "Please Say Yes", and "Blue Jubilee".

Oscar Peterson — In A Romantic Mood ... LP
Verve, 1955. Very Good- .... $4.99
We love Oscar Peterson with strings – a setting he never got to use that often, given the popularity of his famous trio recordings! When Oscar gets set up with strings, he seems to play even more freely than with a combo – let loose from rhythm a bit more than before, and instead focusing strongly on melody – which often comes off with a warmly lyrical feel. This album's a rare entry into the Peterson strings category – a great 50s date with Russ Garcia backing Oscar up – giving the album just the right mix of mellow and modern to match Peterson's magical work on the keys! In a way, the album's a link between two different styles of 50s jazz – some of the warmer string-laden work of the piano mainstream, and some of the sharper sounds of the Verve modern approach to the style – served up here by Oscar in ways that bring both modes together perfectly, with just the right dash of both. Titles include "Laura" and "Tenderly" – both tracks you'd have to have on an album like this – plus "Black Coffee", "Ruby", "Stella By Starlight", "A Sunday Kind Of Love", and "I Thought About You".
(Red & yellow label Verve Inc pressing, with deep groove. Cover has fading and discoloration due to age)

new Horace Tapscott — Lighthouse 79 – Vol 2 ... CD
Nimbus, 1979. New Copy .... $11.99
A second unearthed gem from pianist Horace Tapscott at the Lighthouse club in 1979 – very sharp stuff featuring a solid group of Nimbus players! Volume 2 was recorded on October 11, appropriately the night after the set featured on Lighthouse 79 Vol 1, with Tapscott leading the way, and setting up a groove with on the piano, while the group pounces when ready The players are Reggie Bullen on trumpet, Gary Bias on alto, Roberto Miranda and David Bryant on bass, and George Goldsmith on drums. It's an impeccable balance of subtle, slow building melodicism and sharp, emphatic group play & soloing! Totally great stuff, and absolutely worth a second helping. Titles include "Acirfa", "Niger's Theme", the epic "Stella By Starlight", "Lush Life" (at 6+ minutes, the only number in the set that runs less than 10 minutes) and "Inspiration Of Silence".

Cedar Walton with Clifford Jordan — Night At Boomers Vol 2 ... LP
Muse, 1973. Near Mint- .... $16.99
A great little session of soul jazz – and very much in a classic mode, but with touches of the Strata East sound of the 70s. Although Blue Note and Prestige had seemed to abandon straighter soul jazz by the early 70s, Muse was cranking out some nice sides with older players of the 60s scene. This set features Cedar Walton's crack trio with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, joined by tenorist Clifford Jordan, who was blossoming into a whole new player during the decade. Titles include "Naima", "Blue Monk", "Stella By Starlight", and a long reading of "I'll Remember April".

Ben Webster — Warm Moods – Ben Webster With Strings ... CD
Discovery, 1960. Used .... $4.99
One of the all-time great ones by Ben Webster! The album was recorded near the end of Webster's all-too-short time on this planet – at a point when he had really perfected a sorrowful tone on tenor, and a strangely sinister approach to ballads – one that gave even familiar tunes an unusual edge. The great Johnny Richards handled backings for the set – in a mode that uses light strings in the background, and which lets the solos step right out front – in a style that rivals the great work of Ralph Burns for Verve's classic "with strings" albums. But the real strength here is Webster's tone, which is fantastic – as you'll hear on titles like "Stella By Starlight", "Nancy", "It's Easy To Remember", and "Accent On Youth".

Claude Williamson — Round Midnight ... CD
1956. New Copy .... Around June 12, 2013
One of the greatest albums ever from west coast pianist Claude Williamson – from the cool image on the cover, right down to the freely swinging grooves on the vinyl! Williamson's working here in trio formation with Red Mitchell on bass and Mel Lewis on drums – mostly on familiar tunes, but done in ways that have a really personal sort of approach. The album often has Claude taking his time on the intros to the tunes – setting things up in broad flourishes in a near-solo mode, before letting the bass and drums come into play – and this style creates a nicely moody feel that matches the late nite image of the cover. Titles include "Hippy", "Stella By Starlight", "I'll Know", "Tea For Two", "Love Is Here To Stay", and "The Song Is You".

Chico Hamilton — Further Adventures Of El Chico ... LP
Impulse, 1966. Very Good- Gatefold .... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
Massively groovy work from Chico Hamilton – one of his standout swingers for Impulse Records in the 60s, and a set that really showcases all the changes in music he'd made for the decade! The set features some wonderful reed work from Jerome Richardson and Charlie Mariano, plus some especially great guitar from Gabor Szabo – a player who was rising to fame in Hamilton's group, but also stands out here with lots of the breezy grooves he'd bring to his own dates for Impulse. Tracks are short, but in a good way that really keeps them focused – and other players who complete the groove include Clark Terry on trumpet and Ron Carter on bass – both of whom nicely pick up Chico's sense of adventure and humor. Titles include "Monday Monday", "Daydream", "Stella By Starlight", "Evil Eye", "Manila", "That Boy With The Long Hair", and "Monday Monday".

new Miles Davis — 58 Sessions ... CD
Sony, 1958. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest Miles Davis material ever recorded – and not really ever officially issued as an album until this collection! The recordings are from the magical year of 1958, a time when Miles was working in the Kind Of Blue mode – on the album of the same name, one of his all-time standout classics. The work on this set is in a very similar spirit – recorded by a sextet that includes the rhythm section of Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, and a young Bill Evans, who brings a magically modal feel to the album that really gives it an edge. Added to that are the saxophones of John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley, blowing together in two ends of the soul spectrum, really stretching the color palette from Miles' usual work. Miles himself seems very inspired by the company, and works with plenty of space to allow the saxophonists to stretch out in wonderful solos – and Evans himself is simply amazing, working wonderfully in the setting, making us wish he'd recorded more group dates like this one! The first 3 tracks on the set were briefly issued on the flipside of the Jazz Track album (an obscure Columbia LP that also included 10 songs from the soundtrack to Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud), and a few others on later live LPs – but this is the first time the material from that group has appeared together as a full album. Includes stellar versions of "Stella By Starlight", "Green Dolphin Street", "Fran Dance", "My Funny Valentine", "Oleo", and "Love For Sale".

new Martin Denny — Taste Of India/Exotica Classica ... CD
Liberty/Vocalion (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Late 60s magic from Martin Denny – a pair of albums back to back on a single CD! On A Taste Of India, Martin Denny takes a tip from the sound of the East – adding some slight Indian flavors to his usual exotica groove – with the help of arranger George Tipton! Most of the music is still in the lush piano instrumental mode that Denny was using in these later Liberty years – but things are definitely groovy throughout, even if the Indian elements are sometimes used in ways that are more bossa than anything else. Maybe not the clearest picture you'll get of the sound of India in the 60s – but a sweet little record, with titles that include "Incense & Peppermints", "Live For Life", "Touch Of India", "Hypnotique", and "Indrani". Exotica Classica is pretty darn nice later work from Martin Denny – a great batch of sexy tracks with stunning backings, and a really nice late 60s mellow piano groove! The great Nick DeCaro handled the arrangements, and gives the record a feel that's almost like A&M Records at times – with these nice weird percussion bits amidst more polished larger arrangements – all punctuated by these sweet piano lines from Denny! The overall feel is less classical than Frenchy/sexy – but that's OK with us – and titles include "Exotic Night", "For Lovers", "The Terry Theme", "Stella By Starlight", and "I Will Wait For You".

Gentle genius from Red Garland – working here in classic trio formation with Sam Jones and Art Taylor – on a mellow set of late nite numbers and subtle ballads, all carried off in the best tradition of the Moodsville label! Eddie Lockjaw Davis joins the group on 3 tracks on the set – blowing in a style that's spare, open-mouthed, and amazingly soulful – more so almost than even his best ballad blowing on his organ-based records for Prestige during the same time. Davis really sparkles tremendously on the tunes "Softly Baby", "When Your Lover Has Gone", and "We'll Be Together Again" – and other tracks include "Stella By Starlight", "Blue Room", and "Wonder Why".

new Johnny Hartman — All Of Me (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1956. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although the world always remembers Johnny Hartman best for his Impulse recordings with Coltrane, we've always dug some of his earlier stuff – like this album – because the sound's a bit rawer, and the style's got more of a kick! The magical Hartman voice is presented in two great settings – one a small orchestra directed by Frank Hunter, the other an even cooler group headed by Ernie Wilkins – with great horn work from players who include Anthony Ortega, Howard McGhee, Jerome Richardson, and Lucky Thompson! The tracks are familiar, but done with that dusky Hartman style – and titles include "I Could Make You Care", "The Lamp Is Low", "Stella By Starlight", "All Of Me", and a very haunting rendition of "The End Of A Love Affair". CD features 4 bonus tracks too – alternate takes of songs on the album!

new Yusef Lateef — Fabric Of Jazz ... LP
Savoy, Late 50s. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent album from brother Yusef, and one that's got the haunting mix of hardbop and exotic instrumentation that made these early records so great. Yusef plays argol and flute, in addition to straight tenor, and he's backed by a Detroit group that includes Bernard McKinney on euphonium , Terry Pollard on piano, William Austin on bass, and Frank Gant on drums. The set has a great rendition of Lateef's own "Valse Bouk", plus the tracks "Moon Tree", "Half Breed", and "Stella By Starlight". Long tracks, a nice moody feel, and a cool cover, to boot!
(Lots of light marks, and plays with some crackles and clicks. Cover is nice, but has a split spine.)

new Mina — Mina (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ri Fi (Italy), 1964. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful early work from Italian vocalist Mina – and a set that has her singing a fair bit in English, too! The album's got these wonderful backdrops from soundtrack composer Augusto Martelli – who gives the record a feel that's way deeper than just pop music – more of a complicated jazz vocal approach that works perfectly for Mina's wonderful sound – inflected by some fresh instrumental touches that add a nice degree of surprise to familiar numbers! A few tunes are in Italian, and titles include "Stella By Starlight", "You Go To My Head", "Angel Eyes", "The Nearness Of You", "Everything Happens To Me", and "La Barca".
(Amazing heavy pressing – with a great heavy cover too!)

new George Shearing — Black Satin ... LP
Capitol, 1956. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The George Shearing Quintet – with added orchestrations – all in a blend that's got that pillow-soft sound that Shearing did so well back in the 50s! Arrangements are by George and Billy May – the latter of whom is especially subtle here, bringing things in with the best ballad mode he'd use behind Sinatra – yet tailored nicely for Shearing's use of vibes, guitar, and added Latin percussion. And as with some of George's best records, even when things are gentle, they still know how to swing – thanks to a sense of space and timing that's always a treat. Titles include "Moon Song", "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", "If I Should Lose You", "Black Satin", and "Starlight Souvenirs".
(Rainbow pressing. Cover has light wear.)

new Lonnie Liston Smith — Renaissance ... LP
RCA, 1976. Used Gatefold .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massively sweet groover from Lonnie and the Cosmic Echoes – smoother and warmer than some of his earlier albums, with a really soulful fusion vibe! Lonnie plays acoustic piano and "electric colorations" – working with a group that includes brother Donald on flute and vocals, Dave Hubbard on trumpet, and Leon Pendarvis on clavinet – and the whole thing's got a laidback, superdope feel that shows Lonnie totally at the top of his game! There's still a nice degree of spirituality to the set, and titles include "Renaissance", "Space Lady", "Between Here & There", "Mardis Gras", "Starlight & You", "Song Of Love", and "Mongotee".
(Cover has some edge wear.)

new Idrees Sulieman/Benny Bailey — Swiss Radio Days Vol 25 – Idrees Sulieman & Benny Bailey ... CD
TCB (Switzerland), 1970/1975/1982/1983. New Copy .... $11.99 12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two American trumpeters – both of whom hit some of their best work ever in European recordings like this! The album's a perfect showcase for both Benny Bailey and Idrees Sulieman – and really rivals any of their American sessions for range of imagination, depth of soul, and unbridled expression! Benny Bailey is up first – really soaring on two different sessions with the Jazz Live Trio of pianist Klaus Koenig – one from 1970, and the other from 1983 – with Benny sounding completely mindblowing on the long original "Sanza", then reminding us how he can really transform a tune on versions of "Summertime" and "Stella By Starlight". Sulieman's an equally great pleasure here – again on one 70s recording, and another from the early 80s – both with Jazz Live Trio – on titles that include "Wee", "Misty", "I Can't Get Started", and "Now's The Time".

new Grover Washington Jr — Strawberry Moon/Then & Now/Time Out Of Mind ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1987/1988/1989. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Grover Washington Jr's first few albums for Columbia – Strawberry Moon, Then & Now and Time Out Of Mind – together in a 2CD set! Strawberry Moon has a number of laidback groovers, with some solid Washington originals such as the title track and some sweet covers. BB King plays and sings on "Caught A Touch Of Your Love", with Jean Carne guesting on "The Look Of Love". Grover's sax is soulful and sweet throughout, and the titles include "Strawberry Moon", "Summer Nights", "Keep In Touch", and "Maddie's Blues". Then And Now is a nice one that has Grover working in a straighter jazz mode for the most part, taking a break from the soul and R&B groover –- the most timeless of the 3 albums compiled here! Players include Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Grady Tate and Darryl Washington. Titles include "Just Enough", "French Connections", "Stolen Moments", "Stella By Starlight" and more. Time Out Of Mind's title track is a cover of the Steely Dan classic, circa Gaucho – and this album finds Grover embracing the 80s a lot more than his previous album for Columbia. A mix of moods, with some electric funky flourishes and fusiony keys and synths. Titles include "Jamaica", "Sacred Kind Of Love", "Fly Away", the title track and more. This trio of albums represents a wide stylistic range covered by Grover in just a 3 year period!

new Franco Cerri — La Sera A Casa Con Te ... CD
BTF (Italy), 1968. New Copy .... $24.99 Out Of Stock
Incredibly lovely work from Italian guitarist Franco Cerri – easily one of the best players on his instrument in the 60s – even on both sides of the Atlantic! The setting here is relatively lush – fuller backgrounds with Cerri's guitar on lead solos – but often with some nice bits of bossa and some of the other delightful flourishes you'd get in Italian charts of the time, particularly some of the soundtrack arrangements. The feel is wonderful – a great expansion of some of Cerri's small group modes of the earlier part of the decade – and titles include "Ti Basta Dare Tempo Al Tempo", "I Love You", "Bluesette", "Che Faro", "Tonsambaris", "Stella By Starlight", and "Girl From Ipanema".

new Al Grey — Night Song ... LP
Argo, 1962. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
One of the few fantastic collaborations between trombonist Al Grey and tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell – made even better by some work on vibes from a young Bobby Hutcherson! The groove here is earthy and bluesy – quite a different setting than Hutcherson's modernist sides for Blue Note, and a really unique little groove that makes equal use of the tenor, trombone, and vibes in the frontline. And while Grey and Mitchell have their roots in more famous bigger bands, they work together here with a playful lyricism that's really amazing – a unique approach to their music that made the group one of the most striking of the time. Other players include Dave Burns on trumpet, Earl Washington on piano, Otis Candy Finch on drums, and Herman Wright on bass – plus a bit of conga from Phil Thomas. Titles include "Stella By Starlight", "Laughing Tonight", "Through For The Night", "Blues In The Night", "Stardust", and "Night & Day".
(Blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear, aging, a small split on the bottom seam, and clear tape on the top seam. Label has a mark from sticker removal.)

new Max Roach — Max Roach Plus 4 On The Chicago Scene (Trip pressing) ... LP
Trip, 1958. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
One of Max's real killers from the late 50s! After experiencing the hardship of the loss of Clifford Brown and his LA connection, Max seemed to set his sights on Chicago – where his keen talent for spotting strong young players hooked him up with some of his best bandmates in years. This album has Roach working with windy city young lions like George Coleman, Booker Little (both of whom were up in Chicago from Memphis), Bob Cranshaw (from the MJT+3), and Eddie Baker, an underrated midwestern pianist. The tracks are played with a soulful electricity that graces Roach's best work from the time – and titles include "Shirley", "Sporty", "Memo To Maurice", and "Stella By Starlight".

new Charlie Rouse — Yeah/We Paid Our Dues ... CD
Epic/Collectables, 1961. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
An album and a half from Charlie Rouse – plus some great work by Seldon Powell too! First up is Rouse's Yeah album for Epic from 1961 – a fantastic (and rare) hardbop session from the early 60s! The album's quite different than some of the work Charlie Rouse cut with Monk's classic quartet at the time – more in a hardbop mode that takes us back to his late 50s sides for Prestige – but done with a new sense sharpness, and a bit more of a soul jazz influence overall! The group is great too – a quartet that includes Dave Bailey on drums, Billy Gardner on piano, and Peck Morrison on bass. The latter two were playing a lot with Lou Donaldson in the early 60s, and they bring a similar rhythmic flavor to this set as well – and although we've always loved Rouse's modernist tones with Monk, this session shows him as a true emotional genius, capable of laying down a tight solo that's right in the pocket! Titles include "Billy's Blues", "Lil Rousin", "Stella By Starlight", and "Rouse's Point". We Paid Our Dues is a really great little album – featuring some of the best small combo work by the both Charlie Rouse and Seldon Powell! The album is split into two parts – one part featuring work by Rouse with a trio that features Gildo Mahones on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. With Mahones leading the rhythm, the session's a lot more soulful than some of Rouse's other work – swinging with a lean mean sound that really returns his tenor style to some of its 50s power. The other group on the set features rare small combo work by Seldon Powell – an excellent tenor player who almost never got to work in small group settings. The rest of Powell's group includes Peck Morrison on bass, Denzil Best on drums, and Lloyd Mayers on piano. Both players are well suited to appear on the same record, and the split in personnel from track to track is less bracing than you might think. Titles include "Two For One", "Quarter Moon", "I Should Care", "Bowl Of Soul", and "For Lester".

new Westchester Workshop/John Glasel Brasstet — Rare Studio Recordings By Two Outstanding Jazz Ensembles ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1956/1959. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A great slice of the modern jazz underground of the late 50s – featuring sessions by two groups you've probably never heard of! First up on the set are the Westchester Workshop – an octet that features trumpet by Joe Shepley, trombone by Eddie Bert, tenor by Carmen Leggio, and alto by Vinnie Riccitelli – composer of most of the tunes on the set! The group's feel is very much in the chamber/modern mode of a side of the New York scene of the time – a bit like West Coast jazz, but not as cool overall, and with some nice breakout solo moments. Titles include "The Beak", "No Coast At All", "Carmenooch", "Bert Flight", and "Key Chain". Next up are 10 tracks by the John Glasel Brasstet – another octet, but one that featured 2 trumpets (John Glasel & Lou Mucci), French horn, alto horn, and trombone – all working in a surprisingly fluid style, and running in a pack for the start of the tunes, then breaking out into nice solo moments as the tracks unfold. Titles include "Time For One More", "Vikki", "Daydream", "Stella By Starlight", and "Koll Akor Wat". Great stuff – and a package of 18 tracks that you most likely don't have in your collection!

new Ronnie Boykins — Will Come Is Now (aka Ronnie Boykins) ... CD
ESP, 1975. New Copy .... $6.99 15.99 Out Of Stock
A rare non-Sun Ra session from bassist Ronnie Boykins! Boykins was one of Ra's most long-term players – a key part of the Arkestra for many years – but on this album, he hits a totally different sound –and one that's somewhat spiritual as well! The group's got a great sax-heavy sound that comes from a trio of reedmen – Monty Waters, Joe Ferguson, and James Vass – handling alto, tenor, soprano, and flute between them – often in a tight line at the head, then breaking out into some wonderfully personal solos – played with such feeling that almost makes us think that Boykins was a much more sensitive musician than he ever got the chance to be with Sun Ra. The tunes have a really beautiful sense of structure and soul – and the reedmen explode beautifully with their work, alongside a remaining lineup that features Daoud Haroom on trombone, Art Lewis on percussion, and George Avaloz on congas. Titles include "Tipping On Heels", "The Third I", "The Will Come, Is Now", "Starlight At The Wonder Inn", and "Demon's Dance".

new Krzysztof Komeda — Knife In Water/Innocent Sorcerers ... CD
El (UK), 1960/1962. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Komeda soundtrack work from the early 60s – his legendary score for Roman Polanski's Knife In Water – plus a bit of his work from the earlier Innocent Sorcerers and other jazzy material from the period! Knife In The Water Is a wonderful score that echoes with the modern tones and phrasing first explored in French cinema during the new wave! Komeda plays piano, and there's wonderful saxophone lines on nearly every track in the score – stretching out with stark edges and bold colors, and sounding a bit like Barney Wilen on some of his best soundtrack work! Titles on this version are "Ballad For Bernt", "Crazy Girl", "Typish Jazz", "Cherry" and "Roman Two". This CD on El also pulls together some similarly jazzy Komeda work from the film Innocent Sorcerers, some Warsaw festival recordings and other bits. 18 tracks in all – with titles including "Niewinni Czarodzieje" (in three parts), "Get Out Of Town", "Stella By Starlight", "For Heaven's Sake", "Three Little Words" and more.

new Jimmy McGriff — Main Squeeze ... CD
Groove Merchant/LRC, 1974. New Copy .... $5.99 7.99 Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest albums ever from Jimmy McGriff – a hard-wailing session that's filled with plenty of cooking lines on the organ, and a few especially funky tracks! The groove here is tight, short, and very sharp – strongly in the mode of other post-Sue sessions by McGriff – like The Worm or other Groove Merchant sides – with a style that's often much more focused than Jimmy's earlier years, and strongly turned towards the rhythms of the tunes! A few numbers are more familiar soul jazz, but these are nicely offset by the harder funk numbers of the record – like the romping, stomping break classic "The Main Squeeze", the totally groovy "The Worm Turns", and the fast-vamping "GMI". The group features Jimmy Ponder on guitar and Connie Lester on alto sax – and other titles include "The Sermon", "Stella By Starlight", and "The Blues Train To Georgia".

new Grant Green — I Want To Hold Your Hand (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1965. Used .... $24.99 Out Of Stock
A great one from Grant Green – a subtly modern album hiding under a title stolen from a Beatles' song – and one of the mid 60s gems he cut with organist Larry Young! The group features the trio of Young, Green, and Elvin Jones – a dancing combination that pushes the organ/guitar groove to unheard of heights – plus the addition of tenorist Hank Mobley, who's opening up his own bag considerably by this point. The whole thing's great – based around loose, free rhythms – and featuring searching solos that also still remain nicely swinging and in the pocket! Titles include "Corcovado", "Stella By Starlight", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "At Long Last Love".

new Ted Harris — Ted Harris Presents More Giants Of Jazz ... LP
Harris & Dyer, 1982. Used .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A really wonderful little album – a session of indie soul jazz from the early 80s, and proof that quality straight jazz recordings were still being made in the underground! Harris himself is the leader of the session – which features a loosely shifting ensemble of players that includes Hank Edmonds on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, Vernel Fournier on drums, Richard Williams on trumpet, Charles Williams on alto, and Kiane Zawadi on trombone – all players with credentials on better-known recordings, working here in an informal setting that really captures the sort of energy they must have had working in a small group setting at the time. The album's got a few great originals that really step out nicely – "Song For Joyce", "Lo's Delight", and "Rhonda" – all of which have a nicely grooving, but easygoing quality – one that brings out some especially nice notes in Harris' raspy work on tenor and baritone. Other tracks include "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Hey There", and "Stella By Starlight".

new Oscar Peterson — Blues Etude ... CD
Limelight/Universal (Japan), 1965. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
An overlooked 60s gem from Oscar Peterson – one of his great sides for Limelight Records, and possibly the most soulful of the bunch! The group's a trio – with either Sam Jones or Ray Brown on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and they've got a really great feel, one that's a bit different than some of Oscar's earlier groups of the 60s. Hayes' work on drums is nicely sensitive, and almost takes backseat to Peterson's rhythmic piano lines at times – and Jones' work on bass is always a treat, and kicks some of the best tracks here into a really great groove! The record's got a few great original titles, too – like the midtempo groover "Bossa Beguine", and the groovy "L'Impossible", a cool little instrumental that sounds like it was from a soundtrack by Francis Lai or Michel Legrand, and the title track "Blues Etude". Other titles include "Let's Fall In Love", "Shelley's World", "I Know You Oh So Well", and "Stella By Starlight".

Jean-Pierre Massiera & Others — Psychoses 1 – Freakoid 1963 to 1978 ... CD
Mucho Gusto (Canada), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $18.99
Weird and wild work from producer/performer Jean-Pierre Massiera – the force behind Les Maledictus Sound, and an even crazier talent on his own! The tracks on this first volume are completely over the top – a psychotic, psychedelic blend of fuzzy guitars, rough percussion, spare electronics, and occasional funky touches – sometimes topped with some even weirder vocals that further trip out the sound, and push things into territory that almost makes the Cherrystones compilations sound mainstream. Massiera clearly has plenty of skills in the studio – as the production here is as imaginative as the vocals and instrumentation – and work on the set is by a variety of artists, with titles that include "Bizarre" by Les Chats, "Space Woman" by Herman's Rocket, "Space Inferno" by Venus Gang, "Engins Bizarres Et Gens Etranges" by Basile, "La Turbie Piranhienne" by Piranhas, "Psychose" by Les Monegasques, "Jingle Jungle" by Starlights, and "Dali Court" and "Plus Jamais Ca" by Jean-Pierre himself!
