Loose Ends — Little Spice (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 80s. New Copy .... $13.99
A really nice batch of early 80s soul from Loose Ends – one of the best remembered groups who were making strong soul music in Britain in the period – and who actually recorded this excellent first album at Philadelphia's Alpha Studios! Making the record in Philly was a wise decision – the sounds range from classic level slow jams, to solid modern soul to touches of electro and more dancefloor geared groovers – and it sounds like work of deft scene veterans rather than a full length debut for the group! The songs were written by the band who, at that time, included Jane Eugene, Carl McIntosh and Steve Nichol. Tracks include "Hangin On A String", "Choose Me", "Music Takes Me Higher", "Dial 999", "Tell Me What You Want", "A Little Spice", "So Much Love", and "Let's Rock". This great Soulmusic.com CD edition has wealth of bonus tracks: seven in all, including "In The Sky (UK Single – Long Version)", "Only A Day Away", "No Stranger To Darkness (UK Single)" and more.

Marlena Shaw — Spice Of Life ... CD
Cadet, 1969. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
An amazing batch of sophisticated soul tracks – and a favorite with the righteous groove scene! On the surface, the record's a combination of jazz and soul tracks in the same mode that you'd find on some of Nancy Wilson's albums for Capitol during the same time – but digging deeper, you'll find an undercurrent of politics, feminism, and social commentary delivered with surprising intensity. Marlena Shaw's voice is generally sweet, but she's set up in some extremely powerful arrangements by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney that recast even the simplest phrase into a whole new setting of strength and pride – and Bobby Miller of Dells fame also helped make the record what it is, and helped write some of the best songs on the record. The set includes Marlena's classic original reading of "Woman Of The Ghetto", which has been sampled by just about everyone, plus "California Soul", which has a nice hard break, and the tunes "Liberation Conversation", "Where Can I Go?", and the original version of "Go Away Little Boy" – as sweet a statement of womanhood if there ever was one!

new Jumping Jacques — Sugar & Spice ... CD
Petra (Italy), 1968. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A very cool group that's as groovy as their name! The Jumping Jacques were a 60s French vocal group who took elements of other French groups – like The Swingle Singers or Les Double Six – and worked in a mode that was very mod, and very 60s! The tunes on the set sparkle with inventive vocal pyrotechnics – dipping bass parts, floating soprano lines, skipping scatting tenor and alto bits – all coming together in a lovely blend of male and female vocals, dancing lightly with all the charm of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. Most tracks are non-verbal – in that the vocals are working in more of a scatting instrumental mode, jazzily grooving on a set of original tunes by leader Jacques Hendrix. Very cool, and very much in the mode of mid 60s Michel Legrand soundtracks, The Gimmicks, and other bits of European grooviness! Titles include "Let Them Eat Cake", "Gossip & Chatter", "Someday We'll Know", "Somehow I Feel I Must Be Dreaming", "Offbeat Fugue", and "Love Me Now".

new Jerry Butler — Spice Of Life ... LP
Mercury, 1972. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
Perhaps the greatest record Jerry Butler made in the 70s, and a very tight bit of baroque Chicago soul with arrangements and production by Samuel F. Brown III. The tracks are a good mix of originals and covers, and they all show Jerry going way past his Gamble & Huff/Mercury years – into the sophisticated mix of soul, jazz, and studio imagination that was going down on the Chicago scene of the late 60s and early 70s. A few cuts feature duets with Brenda Lee Eager, but the best numbers are the solo ones, like "A Prayer", "That The Way it Was", "If I Could Remember", and "I Need You".

DJ Format with Edan & Mr Lif — Spaceship Earth (voc, inst)/Terror (voc/inst) (limited edition 10 inch single) ... 12-inch
Slice Of Spice, 2012. New Copy (pic cover).... $14.99
DJ Format is joined by a pair of the more innovative figures in leftfield hip hop – the ever-adventurous Edan and underground mic hero Mr Lif! "Spaceship Earth" is killer – with raw and funky backdrop, psych funk guitar in the mix and other cosmic atmospherics. Edan is is all business on the rhymes, too! "Terror" is just as great – centered around funky drums and Lif's excellent rhymes with some sampled vocal madness swirling in and out. A great single!

Chris Byars Octet — Music Forever ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2012. New Copy .... $15.99 18.99
The songs of Freddie Redd – re-arranged wonderfully by tenorist Chris Byars – and played by an octet who really make some new magic with the music! Redd's one of our favorite talents from the late 50s/early 60s scene – a budding modernist who also never failed to swing – a quality that Byars clearly admires too, and shows strongly in the way he opens up and grooves these great tunes! Even the larger lineup of trumpet, trombone, alto, and baritone can't hold things back – and instead, give the tunes more punch than we remember – strong leads that explode into tight solos – driven on nicely by the comping piano work of Sacha Perry. Titles include "The Thespian", "Old Spice", "Emily Reno","Just A Ballad For My Baby", "Minor Interlude", and "Somewhere/Music Forever".

Dessy Di Lauro — This Is Neo Ragtime ... CD
Crazy Glue Music, 2013. New Copy .... $8.99
Quite a chance for singer Dessy Di Lauro – but no surprise, either – given that Dessy's always been one of the more inventive talents of the underground! The set definitely takes its title seriously – and although served up in a contemporary soul style, the music sometimes echoes modes from a century ago – using them with just the right balance to spice things up without pushing Di Lauro into a style that's too far from before. Many numbers have a slight vamp in the rhythms – a gentle swing that bounces around in the way you might have heard in Kid Creole work from the early 80s, but tuned here towards a style that's more 21st Century overall. Some cuts are a bit more straight ahead – and whatever the setting, Dessy sounds great! Titles include "Mysterious", "Bringin It Back", "Never Existed", "Lost In The Jungle", "Why U Raggin", and "Popularity Contest".

Everything But The Girl — Eden (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blanco Y Negro/Edsel (UK), 1985. New Copy 2CD .... $18.99
Beautiful – and a record that still sounds pretty darn great today! When Tracy Thorn and Ben Watt first teamed up to produce this tight little jazz pop gem, little did they know that they'd unleash a landmark sound that would forever transform the face of modern music – a great breath of real acoustic energy in an 80s landscape that was way too overcome with synthesizers and programs! The record mixes jazz and Brit pop into a swirling blend of beautiful little tracks – all graced by the incredibly smart early writing of Thorn and Watt, and some spare arrangements that really retain all the charm of their earlier solo projects too – especially that mature songwriting that made them great from the start. Titles include "Another Bridge", "Bittersweet", "Spice Of Life", "Crabwalk", "Fascination", "Frost & Fire", and "Soft Touch". Incredible 2CD version – with tracks from singles, rare demo recordings, and even some BBC tracks too! Singles include "Laugh You Out Of The House", "Easy As Sin", "Native Land", and "Riverbed Dry" – demos include "Frost & Fire", "Soft Touch", and "Bittersweet" – and BBC tracks include "Never Could Have Been Worse" and "Another Bridge".

Grant Green — Latin Bit (RVG remaster edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. New Copy .... $6.99 11.98
A wicked session by Grant Green – one that's very different than any of his other Blue Note records! Here, Grant's going for a "Latin bit" – adding in a trio of percussionists to spice up the groove with a bit of bossa rhythms, and some harder jamming styles that feel a lot like those used in some of the better Cal Tjader albums of the time. Willie Bobo's in the group on drums, and the only other accompaniment is piano, bass, and percussion – letting Grant run out nice and long on his solos, on a very hip set of tracks that includes "Tico Tico", "Mama Inez", "Besame Mucho", and "Mambo Inn". CD reissue also includes 3 bonus cuts, not on the original album – "Grenada", "Blues For Juanita", and "Hey There".

new Ronny Jordan — Antidote ... CD
4th & Broadway, 1992. Used .... $6.99
A classic bit of London funky guitar from Ronny Jordan – the heir apparent to Grant Green and Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones – and one of the best new players of his generation! The set takes the older funky guitar styles of the 60s soul jazz generation, and fuses it with a 90s nujazz approach – to come up with some tight groovers that have a surprisingly classic feel, yet which also sparkle with the fresher sounds of the time – some of the hip rhythms that were bubbling around in London during the Talking Loud and early Acid Jazz years. Titles include a great remake of "So What", the jazz/hip hop classic "Get To Grips", and the cuts "Cool & Funky", "Summer Smile", "Show Me", "Nite Spice", and "After Hours".

Mouse & The Traps — Fraternity Years (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Beat (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $19.99
Fuzzy Texas work from the 60s – music that's got a mighty strong influence from Bob Dylan – but which is done with a sound that's way more garagey than Bob would have every attempted! There's a vibe here that almost offers an early look at the Dallas scene that gave the world some headier psych – a style that still has one foot in folk rock, but another even more strongly pointed towards reverb and distortion – often with really cool results! Tunes are mostly originals, and mix jingle jangle leanings with some darker tones – on titles that include "A Public Execution", "Cryin Inside", "Lie Beg Borrow & Steal", "Look At The Sun", "Promises Promises", "Do The Best You Can", and "Maid Of Sugar Maid Of Spice".

Sam Rivers — Sam Rivers & The Rivbea Orchestra – Trilogy – Mosaic Select ... CD
Mosaic, 2008/2009. New Copy 3CD .... $44.99
Vital late work from the amazing Sam Rivers – masterful, energetic jazz orchestra pieces recorded live and in the studio with players culled from Orlando and the Central Florida areas around Rivers' adopted home – a treasure that finds Sam sounding as spry and fiercely creative in his 80s has he was half a lifetime ago! Trilogy features 3 unreleased sets – 2 live and one with studio recordings – and it's remarkably vibrant throughout. Sam started dabbling with orchestra jazz in the 70s, bring muscularity and dissonance to big band music in a wholly unique way, and he's been doing it as brilliantly as ever in recent years. 14 horns bring complex, but melodic sweep to the sound, with a 2 piece rhythm. We've been blown away by most of Sam's late period efforts and this exceptional 3CD set from Mosaic is as great as any of it. Players include Jeff Rupert, Chris Charles, David Pate and others on saxes, Tom Parmenter, Brian Scanlon and more trumpet players, Keith Oshiro and David Sheffield on trombone, Doug Mathews on bass and Rion Smith on drums. The first disc (Offering) was recorded at the Plaza Theater in Orlando in November of '08. Includes "Spice", "Ganymede", "Crux", "Aura", "Perkin" and "Pulsar". Disc two (Progeny) was recorded at Sonic Cauldron Studios in Casselberry, FL earlier in '08, and it includes "Robyn", "Cindy", "Monique", "Traci", Iisha", "Destiny" and more. Disc Three (Edge) is a return to the Plaza Theatre in April of '09, and it includes "Ridge", "Brink", "Precipice", "Verge", "Visions", "Point" and more.

Various — Afro Blue Vol 2 – The Roots & Rhythms Of Jazz ... CD
Blue Note, 1998. New Copy .... $8.99
Despite the "primitivist" sort of leanings you might expect from the "roots" in the title, this is actually a nice batch of tracks from the catalogs of Blue Note and World Pacific during the 60's – and they're all jazz tracks that have a slight Africanist influence, but which are certainly not African tracks themselves. The 13 tracks include loads of nice hard to find ones, including "Blue Dashiki" by Blue Mitchell, "Appointment in Ghana" by the Jazz Crusaders, "Marabi" by Cannonball Adderley, "Ghana Spice" Candido, "Zulu" by Randy Weston, "Zambia" by Lee Morgan, and "Follow Me To Africa" by Solomon Ilori & His Afro Drum Ensemble.

Various — Uptown Soul & Funk From The Nashville Indies ... CD
Superbird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $6.99
We're not sure where "uptown" is in the Nashville scene – but the location hardly matters, given the strength of the grooves on this set! The package brings forth a whole host of Music City soul gems we've never heard before – lots of work from the Ref O Ree and Tee Jay labels, some of which has the care and class to match the uptown soul sound that was coming from New York in the 60s, although overall, the set's got even more charm as a southern-styled soul collection! You can definitely hear echoes of other Tennessee soul of the time – bits of Sound Stage Seven and Stax – yet the work here also has its own flavor, too – and is a welcome rediscovery in a world of familiar reissues. Titles include "I Still Remember You" by Gene Allison, "Sugar (alt)" by Thomas Henry, "Sweet Way Of Living" by Peggy Gaines, "Clean With Your Dirty Work (alt)" by Rufus Hunter, "I Hear A Melody" by Spice Of Life, "I'd Like To Try It One More Time" by Larry Birdsong, "Let The Funk Get Next To You" by Eddie & Freddie, "You're Still The One" by Roscoe Shelton, "It Has To Be Love" by Freddie Waters, and "Love Is A Wonderful Thing" by Levert Allison.

new Marvin Gaye — Midnight Love ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Marvin Gaye's last album ever – and a sensuous batch of grooves that almost return him to the sound of Let's Get It On! The style here is a bit more modern, but the sound is still great – a smoother approach to soul than most of Gaye's contemporaries at the time, recorded in a way that has the vocals soaring majestically over the top of the backings! Slight undercurrents of funk spice things up somewhat, but still avoid any mainstream 80s groove cliches – and Marvin wrote, arranged, and produced the album himself (although with a bit of help from Chicago organist O'Dell Brown on the hit "Sexual Healing"!) Titles include "Sexual Healing", "My Love Is Waiting", "Third World Girl", "Turn On Some Music", "Joy", and "Midnight Lady".

new Mongo Santamaria — Afro-Indio ... CD
Vaya, 1975. Used .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet electric funk from the great Mongo Santamaria – a great little 70s album that's filled with plenty of warm fusion touches, and some especially nice saxophone work from Justo Almario! The groove here is heavy on the Fender Rhodes – and Mongo uses the electric keys in all the right ways to spice up the tunes a lot more than before – showing a sound that's quite new for the 70s, and very different than the style of most of his earlier work! The sound is sophisticated, but never sleepy – almost a CTI-meets-Fania sort of style – with production that respects both the chunky rhythms at the bottom and the sweeter jazzy on the top! Titles include a funky cover of "Lady Marmalade", plus "Funk Down", "Mambo Mongo", "The Promised Land", "Creepin", and "Funk Up".

new Shelly Manne — Boss Sounds! ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
One of Shelly Manne's best records of the 60s – largely because the group's so great! Altoist Frank Strozier was playing with Shelly at the time, and his rich talents on the alto make the record almost worth seeking out for him alone – because here, Strozier's opening up his sound a lot more than in the early days – and going for strange phrasings, sharp edges, and other unusual twists that really add a lot more spice to the set than you might expect! The rest of the group features Conte Candoli, Russ Freeman, and Monty Budwig – and in a way, the record takes off from the energy of Shelly's classic Blackhawk sessions, but with even a bit more tightly dynamic sound. Titles include "Frank's Tune", "You Name It", "Margie", and "Idle One".

new Joey Negro & The Sunburst Band — Secret Life Of Us ... CD
Z Records (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Nothing secret about The Sunburst Band – they're a group we've loved for years – and one that we love to rave about on these pages! This album's a tremendous effort – one that proves that our faith in the group has never let us down – and that they're one of the few acts that keep on burning with a serious fire and never-ending sense of soul! Joey Negro keeps things in a classic dancefloor mode throughout – lots of warm 70s club elements and funky soul undercurrents – all handled with just the right sort of vintage instrumentation and jazzy inflections that make these guys equally-trusted contemporaries of Incognito – yet even more disco-oriented too. And this time around, there's some great vocalists on board to really help keep the proceedings at a partyful level – Angela Johnson, Noelle Scaggs, Diane Charlemagne, Pete Simpson, Donna Gardier, and others – all singers who help spice things up between instrumental grooves. Titles include "My Way", "In The Thick Of It", "Jazz The DMX", "Caught In The Moment", "Educated Funk", "Trust Me", "Love One Another", "Easy Come Easy Go", "The Secret Life Of Us", and "Why Wait For Tomorrow".

AllspiceAllspice ... CD
Fantasy/Dusty Groove, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.98
The only album ever from Allspice – but a hell of an incredible soul record – and one that's kept the group's name strong with collectors and rare groove fanatics for years! The album's on of the best Fantasy Records productions by Wayne Henderson and his At Home team – and like some of the others, is handled with a groove that's tight, yet plenty sophisticated too – light years from mainstream disco or common club of the late 70s, and instead informed by plenty of jazz and deeper ideas as well! The vibe is perfect – as heavenly and righteous as some of the best Roy Ayers club tracks of the time – which proves to be a perfect foil for the Allspice style of mixing male and female vocals – which again is often done in an Ayers-like mode. The sound is sublime throughout – one of those real treasures that should have been a huge record in the 70s, but was barely pressed up at all – and quickly forgotten about by the record company. Yet even after all these years, the whole thing sounds amazing – one of those albums we'd never part with at all! Titles include the groovy "Slipped Away", the funky stepper "Hungry For Your Love" – and loads of other great tunes that include "Love Fire", "Destiny", "She's A Lady", "I Don't Know", and "Give It Time".

Common — Resurrection ... LP
Relativity, 1994. New Copy (reissue).... $7.99 9.98
In 1994 when everyone seemed to be turning hardcore, Common Sense wasn't having it. Introspective tales of growing up and living on the South Side that fit perfectly with No I.D.'s mellow production and spiced up with two guest appearances by Y-Not aka Twilight Tone. Classic LP, solid all the way through. Being in Chicago, people always ask us for this one, but the original is impossible to find, even here. Now back in print with original cover art. With "I Used To Love H.E.R.". "Book Of Life", "Chapter 13 (Rich Man vs. Poor Man)", "Nuthin' To Do", "In My Own World (Check The Method)", "Maintaining", "Communism", "Watermelon" and seven more.

Jimmy Spicer — Money (Dollar Bill Y'all) (voc, inst) ... 12-inch
Spring, 1983. Very Good+ .... $9.99
An oft-quoted, classic old school track from one of rap's pioneering MC's, essential to any hip hop collection, that ought to need no introduction from us. Gets a place in the history books too for the early appearance of Russell Simmons as producer.

George McCrae — Rock Your Baby ... LP
TK, 1974. Very Good .... $8.99
The record that forever put George McCrae on the map – and a crossover bit of Miami soul from the 70s with all the key elements of the TK sound firmly in place! George's vocals are nicely flanged out in that cool production mode that TK was using with its big acts of the time (an approach that was perfect for AM radio, by the way) – the backings of the tunes have the chugging electric rhythms shared by Timmy Thomas and other acts at the label, spiced up by a bit more warm guitar to give the record a deeper southern soul vibe. The record features a 6 minute version of George's super-huge hit "Rock Your Baby", plus a "Rock Your Baby Reprise" – and it's also got a great little version of "I Get Lifted", one of those Miami funk classics that sounds great no matter who does it! Other tracks include "Look at You", "Make it Right", and "I Can't Leave You Alone".
(Cover has light wear, a cutout notch, a stained corner, and splitting on the top and bottom seams.)

Various — New York Sound – From The East Coast To The Future ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $15.99 Just Sold Out!
Seminal club tracks from the New York underground at the end of the 70s – a host of killer singles from the Spring, Vanguard, and Posse labels – all in a fantastic blend of boogie, disco, electro, and soul! The work here is easily some of the most sophisticated to come out of the east coast club scene at the time – a real return to indie genius after disco broke heavily in the mainstream, almost a reinvention of the groove with a host of new elements! Some of these tunes will be familiar, but they're presented here in their full extended versions next to others that have been un-reissued for years – making the set an essential batch of tunes that really gets at the best sound of New York from these years! 10 long tracks in all – including "Over Like A Fat Rat" by Fonda Rae, "It Ain't No Big Thing" by Rainbow Brown, "Money (Dollar Bill Y'All)" by Jimmy Spicer, "Charley Says (Roller Boogie Baby)" by King Tim III, "Wired For Games" by C-Bank, "Rockin It" by MC Flex & The FBI Crew, "Electric Kingdom" by Twilight 22, "Is This The Future" by Fatback, "Love Hangover" by Players Association, and "You Keep On Making Me Hot" by Busta Jones.

new J Dilla — Jay Stay Paid ... CD
Nature Sounds, 2009. New Copy .... $12.99 16.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent full length set of beats & genius from J Dilla – put together by fellow beatmaker extraordinaire Pete Rock, with all Dilla beats – a surprising triumph! Call us jaded, but honestly, we weren't sure how deep the well could go of ready-to-go beats from Dilla, but this stuff is truly top shelf – nearly as strong as the instant classic Donuts from a few years back! Pete Rock crafts the set as if it's a radio show or mixtape, but his skill in so doing is well above and beyond the norm – neither Pete's interjections nor the guest rappers ever get in the way of the flow, it's as smooth as can be. Vocal guests include Ma Dukes (the album was made under Ma's auspices), plus Lil Fame & MOP, Black Thought, Frank Nitty of Frank N Dank, Doom, Illa J & Cue D, Blu, and others. Titles include "King", "I Told Yall", "Smoke" feat Blu, "CaDILLAc". "Fire Wood Drumstix" feat Doom, "Big Day", "24K Rap" feat Havoc of Mobb Deep & Raekwon, "Coming Back", "Mythsysizer" and more. 28 tracks in all, about an hour of unreleased Dilla!

new Various — Son Cubano NYC – Cuban Roots New York Spices 1972-1982 ... CD
Honest Jons/Astralwerks, 1970s/Early 80s. Used .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The rebirth of the Afro-Cuban groove on the New York scene of the 70s – a dozen recordings in the "new traditionalist" sound of the time! After the boom of the Latin Soul sound of the late 60s, and the rise of salsa in the early 70s, there was also a "back to basics" movement within the players of the New York Latin community – a shift that stripped down the sound, reintroduced traditional instrumentation, and worked in rhythms that might have been used on older sessions, but which were slightly updated for the newer recordings. The work of that period, although strong, has often been overlooked in favor of some of the flashier sounds of the scene – and this set wonderfully corrects that fault by bringing together a great sampling of work from the traditional spectrum of the Salsoul and SAR record labels, along with the kind of notes and commitment to quality that makes the Honest Jon's reissues so great! Titles include "Son Sabroson" by Rey Roig, "Cuchillo Para La Pina Cubana" by Charlie Rodriguez, "Chocolate En C7" and "Trumpet En Montuno" by Chocolate, "Oriente" and "Tiene Sabor" by Henry Fiol, "Yo Perdi El Corazon" by Lita Branda, "Camina Y Ven Pa La Loma" by Roberto Torres, "Celosa" by Angelo Y Su Conjunto Modelo, and "Los Dos Hermanos" by Los Jimaguas.

new MF Doom — MM Food ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2004/2007. New Copy 2LP (reissue).... $14.99 Out Of Stock
The bugged sci fi maestro MF Doom's mid 00s masterpiece – tied up and unavailable for a couple years – and a straight up tie with Madvilliany for the championship title of best Doom-related LP since his immortal debut! As you'd guess from the title, this album has a running theme with food, each title funnier than the last, but stays fresh throughout the 15 tracks thanks to tight production, masterfully spliced samples, and a verbal flow that's cooked and spiced to some kind of freakish perfection. The great "Hoe Cakes" single gets served early in set, and it sets the tone for a truly strong album. "Boss like King Koopa. . .". Includes "Beef Rap", "Potholderz" with Count Bass D, "One Beer" produced by Madlib, "Poo Poo Platter", "Fillet-O-Rapper", "Gumbo", "Fig Leaf Bi Carbonate", "Kon Queso" produced by PNS, "Vomitspit", "Kookies" and more.

The bugged sci fi maestro MF Doom returns with the MM Food album – a full five years since the underground classic Operation: Doomsday, and a straight up tie with Madvilliany for the championship title of best Doom-related LP since that immortal set! new Armando Trovajoli — Riusciranno I Nostri Eroi A Ritrovare L'Amico Misteriosamente Scomparso In Africa? ... CD
BMG/GDM (Italy), 1968. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Sweeping strings, African themes, and one of the most beautiful Armando Trovajoli soundtracks of the 60s – a real standout from the already-great Italian scene of the time, and filled with beautiful tunes that are pretty new to our ears! The set's got plenty of those great Trovajoli bossa modes – lightly dancing arrangements underpinned by a good sense of rhythm that always spices things up – and which really comes to the forefront on a few sparer tunes that are heavy on acoustic percussion. The mix of earthy and dreamy is really great, and quite different than the usual Italian score of the time – and titles include 12 variations on themes that include "Canto De Angola", "Angola Adeus", and "Feitico Da Noite".
