Various — Baia Degli Angeli Vol 2 – 1977 to 1978 – The Legendary Italian Discoteque Of The 70s (Book & CD) ... CD
Amarkord (Italy), Late 70s. Used .... $11.99
A second great look at Italy's legendary Baia Degli Angeli disco – presented in a package that's possibly even better than the first! As with that volume, this one's delivered in a book-style format – hardcover, and filled with color pages that contain images of the club in the 70s, a recent revival series, and a host of wonderful artifacts used for promotion – flyers, t-shirts, and other giveaways that are all pretty darn cool! Plus, there's notes on the club, scene, and music in both Italian and English – making for a whopping 60 pages that offer us a look at a key musical force from many years back. But the CD alone is pretty great too – filled with 16 great club classics that played well at the Baia Degli Angeli – including "You Are The Star" by Jakki, "Shu Dig Dancin" by Inner City Express, "Sing Sing" by Gaz, "Dr Doo Dah" by Kongas, "Funky Road" by The Invitations, "Crocos Dance" by Revelation, "Everybody Dance" by Bumblebee Unlimited, "I Think I'm Gonna Fall In Love" by Skyline, "Block Party" by Anthony White, "Rock Spank Freak" by High Voltage, and "Mary Hartman Mary Hartman" by The Sound Of Inner City.

new Art Blakey — Cu-Bop ... CD
Jubilee/EMI (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $15.99
A rare Jubilee Records album from Art Blakey – one of his non-Blue Note sets from the late 50s, cut during the year of 1957 – a time when the Jazz Messengers were hopping around a lot of different labels! This version of the group is searing and soulful – and features Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Sam Dockery on piano, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – plus the unusual addition of Sabu Martinez on conga, rocking and rollicking alongside Blakey's drums in an amazing way! The set's quite different than some of Art's "with percussion" dates for Blue Note – as Sabu's congas kind of just set an extra fire to the hardbop groove – giving it a slight Latin flavor, but more than anything, just getting in a wicked edge that really cooks up the session. Griffin is great, as always, and the album features four long tracks "Woddyn You", "Sakeena", "Shorty", and "Dawn On The Desert".

Various — Soul Sides Volume 2 – The Covers ... CD
Zealous/Velour, 1970s. Used .... $6.99
A motherlode of funky soul covers – pulled together from obscure sources as part of the great Soul Sides series! The names of the songs here are all familiar, but most of the versions are not – remakes of soul, rock, and pop tunes by a variety of artists, mostly from the 70s – many of whom take the music into even funkier territory than the originals! Compiler Oliver Wang really knows his thing with a set like this – and his care in putting the package together makes the volume way more than just a typical soul compilation – thanks to plenty of funky nuggets that should appeal to most of the crate diggers, plus lots of familiar lyrics that have an appeal to the less initiated. Titles include "Kissing My Love" by Spanky Wilson", "Fever" by Sharon Cash, "Feelin Alright" by West Coast Revival, "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" by Esther Phillips, "Here I Am" by Marcia Griffiths, "Che Che Cole" by Antibalas, "Be Thankful For What You Got" by Donovan Carless, "It's Your Thing" by Cold Grits, "Let's Straighten It Out" by OV Wright, "Express Yourself" by Byron Lee, and "Viva Tirado" by Los Mozambiques. CD features the bonus tracks "What A Man" by Laura Lee and "Walk On By" by El Michels Affair.

new Jimmy Bo Horne — Best Of The TK Years 1975 to 1985 ... CD
TK/EMI (UK), Late 70s. New Copy .... $11.99 Just Sold Out!
Stunning Miami grooves from the legendary Jimmy Bo Horne – one of the key figures in the southern club scene of the 70s! Jimmy's got a groove that's very much his own on the set – a snapping, almost clapping sort of rhythm picked up from the George McCrae and KC camps at TK Records – but one that's honed into a tighter, smoother, almost sexier sort of approach overall. This sound's heard to best effect on Jimmy's super-huge hit "Dance Across The Floor" – but it's also pretty well adapted to just about any number, and kept Mr Horne going strong through the biggest years of the TK Miami scene. The set features a total of 19 tracks in all – including "Dance Across The Floor", "Get Happy", "Gimme Some (part 1)", "Spank (1980 rmx)", "Ask The Birds And The Bees", "Goin' Home For Love", "Rocket In The Pocket", "You Get Me Hot", "Music To Make Love By", "Don't Worry About It", and "I Get Lifted".

new Bob Dorough — Multiplication Rock ... LP
Capitol, 1973. Used .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Sure, it was silly stuff when we were kids – but once De La Soul sampled "Three Is The Magic Number", this record became one of the most prized in our possession! And thanks to that hip hop reintroduction, we've really fallen in love with the music again over the years – partly because the tunes are all so groovy, and partly because we've really come to know the jazz-based work of composer Bob Dorough! At the time of this set, Dorough was coming off some great work in the 60s – his own rare recordings, music for Spanky & Our Gang, and others – all of which seems to inform these math-based tunes written for Saturday morning TV. The tunes are all pretty darn catchy, and often quite jazzy – and instrumentation often features some great electric piano nestled in alongside the vocals. Dorough sings the lion's share of the work for this album – although Grady Tate sings on two numbers, and Blossom Dearie on one more. Titles include the amazing "Three Is A Magic Number" – plus "Lucky Seven Sampson", "Little Twelve Toes", "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "I Got Six", "Naughty Number Nine", "Figure Eight", and "The Four Legged Zoo".
(Original pressing. Cover has some wear, a bit of marker in one corner, and minor splits on the top and bottom seams.)
