new Soul II SoulKeep On Movin' – Club Classics Vol One (10th Anniversary Edition) ... CD
Capitol/EMI, 1989/1999. Used .... $5.99
Essential! When this one came out at the end of the 80's, it not only restored our faith in modern soul music, but it also drew the world's attention to the rich rich talents that had been bubbling under in London's mid 80's rare groove scene. The record's a classic, and most of the tracks still sound as fresh today as when they were first minted – probably because Jazzie B drew heavily upon a classic soul sound in his production style, which assured the album an instant place in the upper lineage of R&B! This very nicely repackaged "10th Anniversary" edition includes 6 bonus mixes that weren't on the original CD – for a total of 16 killer soul tracks, including "Jazzie's Groove", "Keep On Movin", "Back To Life" (in both the LP acapella and the 12" vocal versions), "Fairplay", and "Holdin' On". Great stuff, and surprisingly fresh!

Brass Construction — Brass Construction II ... CD
United Artists/Soul Brother (UK), 1976. New Copy .... $16.99
The second album from Brass Construction – heavy horns, basslines, and stellar dancefloor grooves – a stone classic! The first one was totally great, but they cast a wider stylistic claim on II – their trademark funky sound is still very firmly in place, but they bring more to the plate. The rhythms and percussion have a more globally steeped flare at points on the album, and there's a more smoldering, slightly mellower vibe on some tracks, without sacrificing the funk. The whole thing's fused together wonderfully – with the larger group moving with the energy a much smaller combo – and titles include "Sambo", "Screwed", "Get To The Point", "What's On Your Mind", and "Now Is Tomorrow".

Why these guys never got over bigger is beyond us! Between A Rock And A Hard Place is filled with dope rhymes, timeless beats, and a mellow, tuneful vibe that's as strong as just about anything we can think of from that fertile early-to-mid 80s scene. Titles include "Lower Da Boom", "Cummin' Thru Ya F**kin Block" feat Redman, "Drama", "Dynamite Soul", "C'Mon Wit Da Git Down" (plus the remix feat Busta Rhymes), "What Goes On?", and "Wrong Side Of Da Tracks". Beauty Room — Beauty Room II ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
Soulful vocals, synths and orchestral pop from Beauty Room on Far Out! Beauty Room features joint production and songwriting by singer Jinadu and synths maestro Kirk Degiorgio – the latter a Far Out veteran at this point, and an artist whose creative evolution has been a joy to follow! They work in some pretty diverse influences, from classic folk soul to modern avant pop – and an approach that's more about soulful songcraft than exercises in mood and atmosphere. Jinadu's soul-steeped voice has a lot to do with that, but the instrumentation is and production are top notch. Synth, Rhodes, guitars, bass and drums at the core – plus some very nice use of strings, courtesy of the Metropole Orchestra and strings arranger Paul Buckmaster. Includes "We Can't Throw You Away", "Shadows Falling", "All In My Head", "But For Now", "Walking The Fine Line", "One Man Show", "So Far", "The Last Calling", "Heaven Is In Your Mind" and "No Rejections". 11 tracks on the CD.

Boyz II Men — Cooleyhighharmony ... CD
Motown, 1991. Used .... $3.99
A landmark album from Boyz II Men – and a set that shows that the classic harmony style was alive and well into the 90s! Although the production and rhythms here are somewhat contemporary, the vocals have a classic approach all the way through – maturing masculine soul styles that are totally great, and which have aged beautifully over the years – way past the chart-reaching cliches of other groups of the time, and well deserving of attention as a great later Motown moment! Most production is by Dallas Austin – who structured the album beautifully into "adagio" and "allegro" sections – and titles include "Please Don't Go", "Lonely Heart", "Little Things", "Motownphilly", "Under Pressure", "Sympin", "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday", and "Uhh Ahh".

Delegation — Delegation II (with bonus track) ... CD
Mercury/Finesse (UK), 1981. Used .... $9.99
Delegation really hold onto their groove in this rock-solid second set – an album that burns with vibrant energy right from the start – but all in ways that are really a cut above the usual uptempo soul of the time! Rhythms are a key part of the sound, but it's the trio's vocals that really hold us rapt – a warmly glowing approach to the lyrics, and one that still keeps things plenty soulful, even when tunes are upbeat, catchy, and very firmly aimed at the dancefloor! These guys were never huge at the time, but they've got a near-perfect sound throughout – a sense of funk that rivals some of the large-member ensembles, and a warmth with their vocals that matches some of the solo acts of the period. Titles include the sublime "In Love's Time", which has a great Earth, Wind & Fire kind of groove – plus "Singing", "Feels So Good", "In The Night", "Gonna Keep My Eyes On You", "12th House", "Turn On To City Life", and "I Wantcha Back".

Exuma — Exuma II ... CD
Mercury/Repertoire (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $14.99
A perfect follow-up to Exuma's first album on Mercury – and like that one, a really rootsy blend of soul, funk, and other global sounds! Percussion and acoustic guitar dominate most of the instrumentation – just right for the rough-edged vocals on the set – in ways that help underscore some of the more righteous themes in the lyrics! The whole sound is a great summation of the musical journey that Exuma's taken from his Bahamian roots – and titles include "Damn Fool","Paul Simon Nontooth", "Fire In The Hole", and "A Place Called Earth".

Fun Horns — Natural Music ... CD
Amiga (Germany), 1989. New Copy .... $16.99
A record that's got a lot more to offer than just the "fun" promised in the title – and a set with a much deeper feel than you might guess from its wrapping paper cover! The quartet is definitely heavy on horns – soprano and alto sax from Volker Schlott, tenor and flute from Thomas Klemm, trombone from Jorg Huke, and trumpet and flughelhorn from Joachim Hesse – all working here with only a bit of percussion, but mostly just crafting these amazing lines in space between their horns – in ways that maybe echo a bit of the sax quartet style of the time from the US, but which definitely goes way way beyond as well! Things are never too far outside, and at many times, there's this sense of color and tone that almost recall some late 50s/early 60s experiments from folks like Jimmy Giuffre or Art Farmer – with all the sense of swing and soul that might imply. Other numbers have a more contemporary feel – and titles include "Round Funk", "Primo Tono", "Permanent'z", "Kanon II", "Bluestekuchen", "3 Saxophonie Nr 2", "Free Notes", and "Largo Lapidarius".

Freddie Hughes — Send My Baby Back (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Scepter/Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy .... $15.99
Fantastic! This is the kind of soul that we still collect vinyl for and are all the more thrilled to see officially reissued by careful curators such as those at Kent UK! Freddie Hughes is one of the great lost voices of the 60s, and this sparkling album of soulful tunes is a real gem – loaded up here with incredible bonus tracks recorded in earlier duo sessions! He's not the same singer as the Freddie Hughes from Chicago – and he hailed from San Francisco, a very unlikely source for such great soul music. The session was recorded with Lonnie Hewitt (Cal Tjader's funky piano player) in SF – but it's got that perfect New York Wand/Scepter "deep soul meets uptown" sound. The tracks are mostly written by Hughes or Hewitt – and they are all pretty amazing, filled with hooks that just don't quit, and some heartbreaking verses that match the work of writers like Curtis Mayfield or Garland Green. Titles include "Send My Baby Back", "He's No Good", "Tonight I'm Gonna See My Baby", "You're My Everything", "Natural Man" (the Aretha classic remodeled for a male perspective) and "I Gotta Keep My Bluff In" and bonus tracks "Love Can't Be Understood" and "My Baby Came Back". Earlier in the decade, Freddie sang in San Francisco duos Casanova II with Wylie Trass and The Soul Brothers with Ken Pleasants. This CD includes "Maybe They're Right", "Love's Philosophy", "I Was A Fool" and "We Got To Keep On" by Casanova II, plus "Let Our Love Go On", "Love's Philosophy" (Pts 1 & 2), "Where's My Baby" and more by The Soul Brothers, many previously unreleased. One more bonus track: "Do The Philly" on the Music City label, credited to The Music City All Stars.

Leroy Hutson — Hutson II ... LP
Curtom, 1976. Near Mint- (reissue).... $7.99
One of our favorite soul albums ever – a complete masterpiece from the mighty Leroy Hutson, easily one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s! The album's got a warmth that's amazing, yet also still manages to groove all the way through – hitting a subtle, almost mellow vibe that's like Marvin Gaye or Roy Ayers at their best – but somehow even better because the album's a lot less familiar than their work, and has a freshness that grabs us again and again over the years! Hutson arranged and produced the whole set himself – and the scope of his talents in the studio is amazing – tight on the rhythms, but broadly expansive on the other instrumentation – with a mix of intimacy and class that few other records from the 70s could ever hope to match. Perfect all the way through, and filled with genius cuts that include "Don't It Make You Feel Good", "I Think I'm Falling In Love", "Love to Hold You Close", "Flying High", "I Do I Do Want To Make Love To You", "Blackberry Jam", and "Sofunkstication".

Jeffrey Osborne — Only Human (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1990. New Copy .... $13.99
A stone classic from Jeffrey Osborne – and a real standout in mainstream soul at the start of the 90s! Osborne's legendary vocals have never sounded better – as there's a warmth in the production that returns him to the grace and power he had when first going solo – a style that was sometimes a bit lost in clunkier 80s arrangements, but really comes through strongly here, in that early 90s return to more classic-styled soul references. Some of the rhythms have a nice Soul II Soul bounce – and titles include "Sending You A Love Song", "If My Brother's In Trouble", "Only Human", "The Morning After I Made Love To You", "Baby Wait A Minute", and "Nitetime". CD features 5 bonus tracks -=- three mixes of "If My Brother's In Trouble" – plus a 7" mix of "Only Human", and the b-side "Never".

Sun Ra — My Brother The Wind Vol 2 ... LP
Saturn, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A pretty darn incredible record from Sun Ra – with a soulful, spiritual approach that's missing from most of his other albums of the time! The album features Ra playing a good deal of organ (dubbed "intergalactic organ" in this case!) – grooving soulfully on some short tracks that almost hit a soul jazz mode, and which recall the late 60s experiments of organist Freddie Roach. One track, "Pleasant Twilight", is actually a pretty catchy groover with some great ensemble vocals – and other nice ones in this mode include "Somewhere Else", "Otherness Blue", and "Somebody Else's World". After those tunes, the album actually gets a bit "out" – with Ra switching to moog, which he uses in a very tripped-out sci-fi sort of way! The moog tracks are spare and spooky – with a real outer space approach, and lots of chunky analogue bits that still manage to be quite tuneful. Titles include "Sun Thoughts", "The Wind Speaks", "World Of The Myth I", and "The Design – Cosmos II".

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars — Jazz Structures ... LP
Philips, 1960. Very Good .... $11.99
An unusual albums from the west coast scene of the 50s – recorded under the name of the Lighthouse All Stars, but featuring arrangements and compositions by Bob Cooper – who was the real driving force behind the set. Conte Candoli's in the group on trumpet – and other players include Buddy Colette and Bud Shank on alto and flute, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Victor Feldman on vibes and percussion, Stan Levey on drums, and Cooper himself on tenor. The overall sound is relatively tightly constrained, in a "jazz suite" mode – but there's plenty of room for solo space on the set, and Cooper's writing is as fluid as his ability is strong to bring these players together as conductor. The set's got a really great feel that gets way past some of the more academic west coast work of its sort – with a lot more soul than you'd expect. Titles include "Rain Blues", "Genesis (pt II)", "Architectonics", "Directional Suite", and "The Worker".
(Black label mono pressing with deep groove.)

new Lisa Stansfield — Affection ... LP
Arista, 1990. Very Good- .... $0.99
Big bouncing soul from Lisa Stansfield – a record that almost rivaled the first effort from Soul II Soul for UK impact on the American mainstream! Despite a pasty-white cover, the record's got a hell of a lot of color – some rich rhythms that reintroduced a syncopated funky sound to the charts, and soaring vocals from Lisa she hardly ever sung this well again on record. Titles include the tremendous symphonic jam "All Around the World", the beautiful "Live Together", and other nice ones like "This Is The Right Time", "You Can't Deny It", and "Mighty Love".

Switch — Switch II ... CD
Motown/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy .... $18.99
Quite possibly the best album ever from Ohio funky soul combo Switch – and certainly proof that the hope of Motown in the 80s was in ensemble group funk! This second album holds up really well, and thanks to some sweet production by Bobby DeBarge and Jermaine Jackson, the record's got a warm soulful groove that hooks on the popular styles at the end of the 70s, but which keeps the group fresh and point to possibilies for the new decade. We really wish more singers and groups followed suit in the early part of the 80s! Titles include "Calling On All Girls", "I Call Your Name", "You're The One For Me", and "Go On Doin What You Feel".

Next Plateau, 1989. Near Mint- .... $3.99
A landmark soul album – and one of the first to break that acoustic-based Soul II Soul sound back into the American market. In a late 80s market of weak tinny soul albums, this one stood out as a deep rich wonderful gem, with a solid classic sound that's still pretty darn nice in any decade! Includes Sybil's great covers of "Walk On By" and "Don't Make Me Over", plus "In My Dreams", "Crazy For You", "Love's Calling", "I Wanna Be Where You Are", and Ced-Gee's "Bad Beats Suite", mixed out of the original Leon Ware version of "I Wanna Be Where You Are"!

Working Week — Working Nights ... CD
Virgin (UK), 1985. Used .... $9.99
One of the greatest soul groups from the UK in the 80s – a real bright spot in the years before Soul II Soul and the rise of acid jazz – and a set we'd rank right up there with Sade's best work of the time! Working Week have a very jazzy sound at their core – acoustic rhythms, and a strong commitment to jazz at the core – no surprise, given that two of the group's three members were previously involved with Weekend! The third member is the lovely Juliette Roberts – easily one of the best Brit soul singers of the time – and an artist who really helps push some of the more American influences in the group's music – while still giving the whole thing a bit of a London sparkle, too. The mix is sublime, and the whole album's great – full of classic cuts that include "Autumn Boy", "No Cure No Pay", "Sweet Nothing", "Who's Fooling Who", "Thought I'd Never See You Again", and "Venceremos".

Various — Chi-Sound II – Steppin Around The World ... CD
Chicago Steppers, 1999. New Copy .... $7.99 9.99
Recent grooves, but often done with a richly classic feel – one that recalls the waning years of the Chicago Soul scene at the start of the 80s! The package is an effort from the re-activated Chi-Sound label – and it takes up where Carl Davis modern soul imprint left off – a smooth, mellow approach to contemporary R&B that's served up with plenty of class, and pointed directly at the new wave of dancefloor steppers in Chicago! Vocals here are by a variety of different singers, but there's a unified feel to most of the music – an approach that stays mostly in the mellower side of the spectrum, but still maintains a good sense of groove – one that comes from gently stepping beats, warm keyboard parts, and some slight jazzy touches to class things up a bit. Titles include "Soul" by Barry J, "Steppin All Over The World" by Gold Boy, "1st Fruit" by Stephen Dawson, "Steppin Into Darkness" by Paris, "Hang Time" by Kozii, "Better Step Up "by Theresa Davis, "High Steppin" by Sherry Scott, and "Time & Time Again" by Nicole Steel.

Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $24.99
A much-needed look at the incredible German music scene of the 70s – a sprawling landscape of prog, fusion, electronics, and more – all put together beautifully here with the usual completeness we've come to expect from Soul Jazz! Many of the names are familiar – the sorts you've either passed by in the record racks, or seen priced up high in the collectible imports up on display – and if you've never dipped into these grooves, this set is a perfect way to start – as the folks at Soul Jazz have really tuned their ears well, to pick out key tracks that really resonate strongly with music of the 21st Century – a good deal of which was influenced by these groundbreaking acts. Some cuts are long, but never too overindulgent – and the instrumentation and production techniques are really mindblowing – extremely creative, and often presented here in their most open, honest form. Jazzie B hits hits some familiar chords with some of his selections, but there's quite a few tracks even we didn't have on disc and the set plays wonderfully from start to finish, aptly living up to all the title promises! 18 number in all, including "Screw Face" and "Point Blank" by I Roy, "Slave Master" by Gregory Isaacs, "Jump Up" by Admiral Bailey, "Ready Done" by Nitty Gritty, "Natty Dread A Wah She Want" by Tapper Zukie & Horace Andy, "Shine Eye Girl" by Barrington Levy & Jah Thomas, "Getting Cozy (ext mix)" by the In Crowd, "Warrior" by Junior Delgado, "Ain't That Loving You" by ALton Ellis and "Point Of View" by Matumbi.

new Norman Connors — Love From The Sun ... LP
Buddah, 1973. Used Gatefold .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A spiritual soul jazz masterpiece by Norman Connors – one of his pre-soul albums recorded in a style that ranks with the best indie work on Strata East and Black Jazz! The album's a monster session filled with heavyweights – produced to perfection by Skip Drinkwater, and featuring an all-star lineup that includes Buster Williams, Eddie Henderson, Bill Summers, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Herbie Hancock, Gary Bartz, and Carlos Garnett. Tracks are all long, and free-flowing – a bit out at times, but always returning to the modal pulse of Connors' soulful rhythms. Titles include "Carolos II", "Kumakucha", "Holy Waters", "Revelation", and "Love From The Sun".

new Delegation — Delegation II ... LP
Mercury, 1981. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include the sublime "In Love's Time", which has a great Earth, Wind & Fire kind of groove – plus "Singing", "Feels So Good", "In The Night", "Gonna Keep My Eyes On You", "12th House", "Turn On To City Life", and "I Wantcha Back".

new Les McCann — Gospel Truth/Soul Hits/McCanna ... CD
World Pacific/BGO (UK), 1963/1964. New Copy 2 CDs .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of early 60s gems from pianist Les McCann – all wrapped up here in a single set! First up is The Gospel Truth – a solid 60s smoker in which Les McCann really gets back to the roots of soul jazz – serving up the gospel-tinged truth promised in the title – and really linking his piano back to the pulpit in the process! Les has a wonderfully firm touch on the left end of the keyboard – which makes for a rollicking groove on just about every track, augmented by super-tight drum work from the great Paul Humphrey, who almost gets a tambourine vibe out of his snare and cymbal! Stanley Gilbert plays bass, and Charles Kynard plays guest Hammond on a few tracks – and titles include "Get That Soul", "The Preacher", "The Gospel Truth", "Oh The Joy", and "Didn't It Rain". Soul Hits is a really hard-hitting groover from the great 60s trio of Les McCann – a set that adds in some extra guitar from Joe Pass, who definitely sounds his most soulful on the set! Joe grooves perfectly with Les' piano – and has almost a Kenny Burrell-like depth in tone throughout – one that we're not as likely to hear on other Pass sessions of this vintage, possibly because of the excellent rhythms from Paul Chambers on bass and Paul Humphrey on drums! Tunes are definitely the soul hits promised in the title – mostly numbers that were brimming up big in the soul jazz generation of the time, but given a particular Les McCann twist. Titles include "Sister Sadie", "Bag's Groove", "Back At The Chicken Shack", "Work Song", "Sonnymoon For Two", "Groove Yard", and "Sack O Woe". McCanna is filled with a great Latin groove from the mighty Les McCann – a smoking set that adds in extra percussion from Willie Correa – who gives the record a sound that's quite a change from the usual McCann groove! The percussion is wonderful throughout – and given that the great Paul Humphrey is already playing drums in the trio, the whole thing's got a rhythmic zest that never lets up – way different than just the usual "with conga" style you'd hear on a Prestige Records piano trio record – and instead a groove that's definitely dedicated to the boldest Latin piano modes of the time! The track list includes a lot of originals, such as "McCanna", "Zulu", "Bastuto Baby", "Shaam-Pu II", and "Narobi Nights" – plus versions of "Que Rico" and "It Had Better Be Tonight".

new Jeffrey Osborne — Only Human ... CD
Arista, 1990. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock

The second album by The Sylvers – and a very hip batch of funky tracks that goes way beyond their roots as a kiddie soul group! The set was put together by Jerry Peters, with additional rhythm arrangements by Harvey Mason – and the pair of them give the set a very groovy feel, taking full advantage of the group's strong ability to turn a catchy lyric, but also adding some razor sharpness to the grooves. Titles include "Stay Away From Me", "Let It Be Me", "I Remember", "Cry Of A Dreamer", "Through The Love In My Heart", "Handle It", and "I Don't Need To Prove Myself".

Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
As usual with Soul Jazz, the notes are wonderful – and titles include "Devotion" by Between, "Dino" by Harmonia, "This Morning" by Gila, "Rambo Zambo" by Kollektiv, "La Chasse Aux Microbes" by Michael Bundt, "It's A Rainy Day Sunshine Girl" by Faust, "Hallo Gallo" by Neu, "Rheinita" by La Dusseldorf, "Morgengruss" by Popul Vuh, "Fly United" by Amon Duul II, "Soham" by Deuter, "I Want More" by Can, "Geradewohl" by Roedelius, "No Man's Land" by Tangerine Dream, "Daydream" by Ash Ra Tempel, "High Life" by Ibliss, and "Heisse Lippen" by Cluster.

new Wendell Harrison — Evening With The Devil (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. New Copy .... $29.99 Out Of Stock
One of the rare early albums on the Detroit based Tribe label, now made legendary by the compilations on Soul Jazz and P-Vine. Tenor player Wendell Harrison leads a group that includes Marcus Belgrave, Charles Eubanks, and Phil Ranelin, and which features occasional poetry by the "Black Messengers". The groove is laidback and spacey, with some nice electric piano, and good mellow solos that have a nice soulful vibe to them. Other parts of the album are a little bit more out, and have a sharp edge to them. Tracks include "Mary Had An Abortion", "Vol II Angry Young Man" (Parts 1 & 2), "Consciousness", and "Rebirth". new Charles Mingus — Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus (digipack version) ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
The title's exploding with Mingus, and the album is too – a completely classic effort for Impulse Records that's easily one of Charles' best of the 60s! Things are reigned in somewhat from the Mingus years at Atlantic or Candid, but the sound is still great – almost more focused than before – with a sense of all the best qualities that Charles was finding in his music, laid out back to back in near-perfect formation! The group's full of great players – with reeds from Eric Dollphy, Booker Ervin, and Jerome Richardson – all of whom really contribute some deep tones to the album – and Jaki Byard's on piano, making one of his key Mingus appearances of the 60s. Titles include the massive "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul" (the virtual Mingus "trademark" tune), plus the tracks "Celia", "Hora Decubitus", and "II B.S.". Plus, the CD features the bonus track "Freedom" – not on the original LP!

new Sybil — Walk On By (club, radio)/Here Comes My Love (voc, inst) ... 12-inch
Next Plateau, 1989. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
A seminal bit of soul from a key transitional moment! During most of the mid to late 80s, American soul was losing a lot of its edge, especially in production terms. Then, from out of nowhere, Sybil came and dropped the bomb – a righteous new sound that took a lot of classic elements, and infused them with a tight new groove kind of sound – similar to that used by Soul II Soul, and other groups in England. This reworking of Bacharach's "Walk On By" is a real gem, with heavy hip-hop beats, orchestrated strings, and a deep soul sound from Sybil herself! Still sounds great today!

new Working Week — Working Nights (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Virgin/Cherry Red (UK), 1985. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Amazing reissue – with a full bonus CD, and a whopping 15 extra tracks! Working Week were early proponents of really reworking tunes for singles, especially with jazzy elements – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Veceremos (jazz dance special 12")", "Afoche", "Storm Of Light (inst)", "Bottom End", "Stella Marina (main mix)", "Inner City Blues (urbane guerilla mix)", "Who's Fooling Who (dance version)", "Venceremos (7" bossa version)", "Stella Marina (full rap)", "Pepe's Samba (live)", and "Murphy's Law (live)".

new Various — Hitsville West – San Francisco's Uptown Soul ... CD
Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Overlooked Northern Soul from the west coast – a great batch of burners from San Francisco, and proof that the city had almost as much going on as Detroit! As you might guess from the "hitsville" in the title, there's a sound here that owes plenty to Motown – tight instrumentation alongside real soul vocals – all wrapped up with production that helps bring out the best elements of both, and focus it into a soaringly uptempo groove! But unlike Motown, most of the work here is much more obscure – lesser-known west coast singers and groups who really shine brightly, and who make the set a great discovery in 60s soul. Many tracks are from the indie Villa label – and titles include "Is It All Gone" and "Trust In Me" by The Magicians, "I Can't Jerk" by Ozz & The Sperlings, "Is It Love Baby" and "Why Did Our Love Go" by The Tandells, "We Got To Keep On" by The Casanova II, "I'll Always Love You" by The Performers, "Double Cookin" by The Checkerboard Sauares, "You Gotta Git" by Lonnie Hewitt, "You Can Forget It" by Sisters Three, "Times A Wastin" by The Fuller Brothers, "Why Would You Blow It" by Claude Huey, "I Can't See Your Love" by The Ballads, and "You're A Winner" by Harold Andrews.

new DVD — Chi-Sound II – Steppin Around The World (DVD) ... DVD
Chicago Steppers, 1999. New Copy DVD .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
DVD is an older instructional DVD on stepping – with the original 8 count instructional video from 1999, plus more!

Budos Band — Budos Band III ... CD
Daptone, 2010. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids).

Jerry Butler/Jerry Peters — Melinda – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Pride, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of Jerry Butler's funkiest moments of the 70s – served up in a fantastic soundtrack co-penned and arranged by the great Jerry Peters! Peters is best known for his hip work with a variety of soul acts in the studio, but he really steps out here for the score to Melinda – a lesser-known blacksploitation film from the early 70s, but one that boasts a heck of a great soundtrack! Peters approach here is a bit more baroque than some of his contemporaries – and he uses stepping strings equally alongside funky rhythms – creating a groove that's complicated, yet still plenty darn funky – and a sound that's as soulful on the mellower tunes as it is on the standout uptempo ones. Jerry Butler sings vocals on "Speak Truth To The People", "Tank's Theme", "Love is", and "Melinda Reprise" – but the instrumental tracks are even better, and inlcude the clavinet groover "Part III", the sitar-styled "Melinda Latino", and the cuts "Music For Tank's Boat", "The Blues (Dope Pusher's Theme)", and "I Can't Let You Go".

Dam-Funk — Toeachizown Vol 2 – Fly ... LP
Stones Throw, 2009. New Copy .... $9.99
Galactic funk & synth soul from Dam-Funk – his epic full length debut Toeachizown for Stones Throw – and a record that should be a game changer for the southern Cali ambassador of cosmic funk beats, heavy bass and synth grooves! Dam-Funk is part throwback to the electro era – his vintage synths, bass and drum machine grooves are strongly rooted in the end of the 70s and first few years of the 80s vibe, but he's putting his own modern spin on the sounds, keeping it vital and fresh, and quite likely to be bitten by a bevy of superstar producers to come! Occasionally with slow jam or tripped out vocals, but with longer instrumental jams, Dam Funk's fusion of old school and future funk is in a cosmic realm of its own! Vinyl version was originally released as a 5LP set – and now it's available in separate volumes. Vol 2 includes: "Flying V Ride", "Candy Danciin'" feat Mark De Clive-Lowe, "Burn Straight Thru U", "10 West", "I Wanna Know" and "Rollin'".

John Handy — Jazz – John Handy III ... LP
Roulette, Mid 60s. Very Good- .... $5.99
One of the few beautiful early albums cut by John Handy for Roulette – and an obscure session that has him playing alto with a quartet that includes a young Walter Bishop Jr. on piano. Handy here is fresh from his work with Mingus – and his alto is filled with fire and emotion, yet also touched by a great deal of warm soufulness. His work with Bishop on the album hearkens towards later directions in 70s soul jazz – but it's also firmly rooted in a modernist hardbop vein. Titles include "Strugglin", "No Smiles Please", "Blues For MF", and "Afternoon Outing".

HE is on piano, Rhodes, synths – and the vibe on Chapter Two has moments of jazz funk reminiscent of the previous Chapter One set from Family Groove – but others that have a straight up, live and direct modern live soul feel, and others that are straight up jazzy. It's all great stuff – and alternate group lineups throughout include vocalists Johnny Lyvett, Linda Tillery and Wendy Hass, trombone player Sheldon Bermont, sax players Robert Olivera and Jerry Vejmoja, percussionist John Mingo Lewis, guitarist Pat Duffy, drummer Amadeus Barrios and others. Timeless sounds from Lewlewal – a contemporary group from Senegal, and part of a vanishing culture in the city of Podor! Teena Marie — It Must Be Magic (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Gordy (Japan), 1981. New Copy .... $36.99
Maybe the greatest album that Teena Marie ever cut – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of the lady's work for Motown! The set's got this bright, positive bounce that grabs you right from the start – but also moves into a depth that's way different than other funk albums of the time – a way with a ballad and a thoughtful track that almost makes Marie the 80s heir to the Minnie Riperton legacy, especially given the strength of her voice on the set – and the fact that Teena wrote and produced the whole album herself! At a time when so many other female soul singers were at the mercy of other folks' talents and ideas, Lady T steps forth boldly with this classic set – brimming over with greatness on cuts that include the stellar "Portuguese Love", plus "Yes Indeed", "Where's California", "Opus III", "Square Biz", "365", "Revolution", and "Ballad Of Cradle Rob & Me".

Blue Mitchell — Thing To Do ... LP
Blue Note, 1964. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The thing to do – is jam! Blue's sounding wonderful in this classic set for Blue Note – one of his best small group albums – recorded with a sound that's solidly in keeping with his lyrically melodic work in the Horace Silver group! The quintet features Chick Corea on piano – sounding incredibly subtle, and making us wish he'd recorded more sides like this – plus Junior Cook on tenor, nicely matching Blue as he did on so many albums from the time – and bass by Gene Taylor and drums by Al Foster. Titles include the hit soul jazzer "Fungii Mama", plus more introspective numbers like "Mona's Mood", "Chick's Tune", "Step Lightly", and "The Thing To Do".

Willie Mitchell — Soul Bag ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $28.99
Willie's Soul Bag is pretty darn deep – a tight mixture of trumpet-heavy originals – all given sock-solid Hi Records soul production! The album's one of Mitchell's most smoking – and in addition to a few well-chosen covers, the set's also got some great originals – including some Jackson/Love numbers that have a definite Memphis Horns groove! There's some great Hammond at times – and in a way, the whole thing almost feels more like a Stax instrumental set than the sort of grooves we're used to hearing from Hi. Titles include "Apollo X", "Grand Slam", "Honey Pot", "Hawaii Five O", "Set Free", "Everday People", and "Young People".

Mombasa — African Rhythms & Blues 2 ... CD
Spiegelei/Sonorama (Germany), 1976. New Copy .... $18.99
The second album from Mombasa – and possibly even better than the first! The group have really come into their own by the time of this date – mixing together jazz and African roots with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of – quite unique in its approach to rhythms, sounds, and solos! The grooves aren't really the Afro Funk you might expect – and instead, they're based on a headier brew of basslines and percussion, one that's somewhere in a space between Boscoe, The Pharoahs, and Demon Fuzz – but with a sound that's ultimately different than both. The trombone of Lou Blackburn carries the lead on most tracks – snaking out wonderfully over the grooves, with a quality that's amazingly soulful, and which almost has him standing head to head with Fred Wesley as a 70s innovator on his instrument. Other members of the group include Doug Lucas on trumpet, Bob Reed on percussion, Alan Tatham on drums, and Don Ridgeway on electric bass – the last of whom really does a great job shaping the sound of the tunes. Titles include "Yenyeri", "Holz II", "Nomoli", "African Hustle", and "Al Rahman".

Nat Reeves — State Of Emergency ... CD
482 Music, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 14.99
A tremendous set from bassist Nat Reeves – a player who doesn't always record as a leader, but one whose talents have graced countless great groups over the years! The album's got a tight, elegant sort of sound – rooted strongly in Nat's soulful basslines, which step out front all the time – a bit like Ray Brown in his best small combo work – yet still leave plenty of space for sparkling trumpet lines from Joshua Bruneau, warm-rolling piano lines from Rich Germanson, and drums from Jonathan Barber. The strength of the bass gives the album a soulful depth right from the start – which the other instruments only improve on – and titles include "Fungii Mama", "Moon River", "So Tired", "Little Waltaz", "Brick's Blues", and "Laverne Walk".

Christian Reim — Unreleased Works 1969 to 1979 ... CD
Plastic Strip Press (Norway), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
Great material from Norwegian pianist Christian Reim – all of it unreleased, but all of it pretty darn great! Reim's honestly not a player we know at all, but he emerges as a heck of a great talent in this set – a pianist with a really thoughtful, lyrical sort of feel – but one who also knows how to keep up a groove as well! The set features some early work in a soul jazz combo mode, then moves into more complicated grooves – but ones that all stay pretty darn swinging, without any too-modern or too-out moments – all to end with a wonderful quartet of tracks from the end of the 70s, showing a bit of a California sense of warmth in some of the tunes. Reim plays mostly piano, but also a bit of organ – and other players include Ditlef Eckhoff on trumpet, Knut Riisnaes on tenor, Helge Hurum on flute, and Carl Magnus Neumann on alto sax. Titles include "Away", "Revolution", "Hippie", "Llut", "Shalom", "Quiquenita", and "Variasjoner Over Et Tema Av Nordraak".

Various — Wax Poetics Of Japan – Soul Bamboo – King Of Japan Jazz 70s ... CD
King (Japan), 1970s. New Copy .... $29.99
A beautiful slice of Japanese jazz from the 70s – grooves that mix together older bamboo flute sounds with modern styles – bits of funk, modal, and fusion that work perfectly with the warm tones of the flute! The blend is completely seductive – very Japanese, but with a really universal appeal – and as you'd guess, most of these cuts never made it out to the rest of the world at the time – so we've got the cats at Wax Poetics Japan to thank for bringing them all together in a killer set like this! There's plenty of funky numbers on here that really make the set worth getting – a real musical discovery, as you'll hear on cuts that include "Eli's Coming" by Singers Three, "Left Right" by Richard Pine & Company, "See See Rider" by Singers Three, "Blue" by Takeshi Inomata & The Sound Limited, "Loving You" by George Ohtsuka, "Negative & Positive" by Minoru Muraoka, and "Judy's Samba" by Seiichi Namakura Quintet.

The best music in years from RZA – the man who introduced styliized martial arts soundtrack funk to hardcore hip hop – and the soundtrack to his own damn stylized martial arts film, The Man With The Iron Fists! Musically, it's top notch! RZA's wise enough to contemporize his tried-and-true style rather than revisit it – with swelling soul strings and a crisper sound than the dusty Shaw Bros-sampling Wu Tang sound of past endeavors –and he's joined by a diverse roster of guests that includes Ghostface, Raekwon and other Wu veterans, Kanye, MOP, Pharoahe Monch, The Black Keys, Corrine Bailey Rae, Danny Brown and many more! Includes "The Baddest Man Alive" with The Black Keys, "Black Out" with Ghostface, MOP & Pharoahe Monch, "White Dress" with Kanye West, "Rivers Of Blood" with Wu Tang Clan and Kool G Rap, "Chains" with Corrine Bailey Rae, "The Archer" with Killa Sin, "Just Blowin' In The Wind" with RZA and Flatbush Zombies, "Your Good Thing Is About To End" by Mable John, "Built For This" with Method Man, Freddie Gibbs & Streetlife" and more.

new Archie Shepp — Yasmina, A Black Woman/Poem For Malcolm ... CD
BYG/Charly (UK), 1969. New Copy .... $8.99 Just Sold Out!
A tremendous bit of jazz history – 2 classic Archie Shepp albums on 1 CD! Yasmina features Archie Shepp at his spiritual best – recording in Paris in 1969, and absorbing a heck of a lot of pan-African influences! The centerpiece of the album is the amazing "Yasmina" – a long track that builds with passion and fire, pulsing with an intensity that you'd expect more from Pharoah Sanders than Shepp himself. Next up is "Sonny's Back", a wonderful straight jazz groover with Archie and Hank Mobley on twin tenors upfront – making a rare and memorable recorded appearance together! The set's capped off by a mellow version of "Body & Soul", one that points towards the more soulful side of Shepp's work in the 70s. Poem For Malcolm is one of Shepp's most memorable LPs for BYG. Side one has him playing with Burton Greene, Alan Silva, Philly Joe Jones, and Claude Delcloo on the extended Mamarose/Poem For Malcolm. The track starts out with very free playing, then moves into a more subdued passage, with Shepp's recitation of his "Poem For Malcolm". Side two has a great lineup that includes Grachan Moncour III, Malachi Favors, and Hank Mobley, who gives one of the wildest performances of his life! The group runs through the 20 minute track Rain Forest/Oleo, and begins with a dark, spare performance, then leaps into a reading of "Oleo" that's filled with fire.

new Cecil Brooks III — Smokin' Jazz ... CD
Muse, 1993. New Copy .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cecil's smoking on the cover, and he's smoking on the record too – really cooking things up in the best old school soul jazz style of his Muse Records years! The album was recorded live in New Jersey, and it's proof that plenty of great jazz was still coming from west of the Hudson in the early 90s – a time not nearly as documented as earlier years on the Jersey scene, but still a time of great players and hip local nightspots like the Trumpets club in which the album was recorded. Brooks' tight work on drums is very firmly at the helm of the set, and other players include Antonio Hart on alto, Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Jack Walrath on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, and Lonnie Plaxico on bass – working with Cecil in a set that also includes a fair bit of original numbers by the group. Titles include "Gordon's Maze", "Fried Bananas", "And Another Thang", "2AM In The Village", "The Third", and "Montclair".

It's the group's 12th album, but they're still going strong – working in a sweet mix of bassy funk that really expands their original sound! The album's got a nice clubby feel overall – not really disco, but bumpin soul that still shows the group as a mostly funk act, but one with an ear for the dancefloor crowd. The standout cut is "King Tim III (Personality Jock)", a really catchy old school track that's often hailed as one of the first rap tracks ever – and other cuts include "Gimme That Sweet Sweet Lovin", "Disco Bass", "You're My Candy Sweet", and "Love In Perfect Harmony".

The groove ranges from slow-dope and mellow, to choppy and funky, with plenty of hot breaks and classic hip hop samples. Titles include the monster jammer "Dujii", plus "Lucky For Me", "Sea Of Tranquility", "North East South West", "I Remember John W Coltrane", "Sombrero Sam", and "Breeze & Soul", a very tasty little jangly number!

new Gregory Porter — Be Good ... CD
Motema, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Gregory Porter – easily one of the best new jazz singers to emerge in the past decade or so, and one whose approach is soulful enough to rival the greats of the 70s! There's echoes here of Bill Withers, Gil Scott-Heron, and Al Jarreau – and like all those artists, Gregory's a singer who really moves past simple styles and generic conventions – into a mode that's vivid and rich right from the start, and defiitely his own territory – a world of sound that's a delight to experience! Most backings are straight jazzy, but inflected with some soul modes – and the album's even better and more incredible than Porter's debut for Motema. A brilliant little album from Archie Shepp – material recorded on a variety of dates at the end of the 60s, but packaged together as an extremely soulful set in the mid 70s! There's a feel here that rivals some of the best moments of the Attica Blues years – a mix of spiritual soul jazz and bolder modern moments – reigned in nicely from the freer Shepp sound of a few years before, and given a really righteous focus by the addition of vocals on some tracks. Archie sings a bit himself, and one number features Leon Thomas singing with Tasha Thomas and Doris Troy – a very odd meeting in the studio! Players include Woody Shaw, Jimmy Owens, Dave Burrell, Grachan Moncur III, and Wally Richardson – and the tracks even get a bit funky at times! Titles include an excellent version of "New Africa", which was recorded later in Paris by Grachan Moncur III – plus "Back Back", "Spoo Pee Doo", "Slow Drag", and Cal Massey's "Bakai".

Seminal club tracks from the New York underground at the end of the 70s – a host of killer singles from the Spring, Vanguard, and Posse labels – all in a fantastic blend of boogie, disco, electro, and soul! The work here is easily some of the most sophisticated to come out of the east coast club scene at the time – a real return to indie genius after disco broke heavily in the mainstream, almost a reinvention of the groove with a host of new elements! new Art Farmer & Benny Golson Jazztet — Here & Now/Another Git Together ... CD
Mercury/Universal (Germany), 1962. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A pair of records from the legendary Art Farmer & Benny Golson Jazztet! Here & Now is one of the most magical records ever from this legendary group – a set that swings as hard and soulfully as some of their previous sessions, yet also has a sharper, more modern vibe as well! Of course, this latter aspect is no surprise – once you realize that a young Grachan Moncur is on trombone – adding his hip horn to the wonderful frontline of Benny Golson on tenor and Art Farmer on trumpet and flugelhorn. And given that the rhythm group also features Harold Mabern on piano, you can bet there's a freshness here that can't be beat – a sound and energy that's kept this one at the top of our stack for many many years. Mabern and Moncur contribute two of the best tracks – "Richie's Dilemma" and "Sonny's Back" – and other titles include "Whisper Not", "Tonk", "Rue Prevail", and "Ruby My Dear". Another Git Together is a rare later date, recorded after their more famous albums for Chess! The lineup here is a bit unusual – in that a young Grachan Moncur III is in the combo on trombone – really adding some deep, soulful tones to the music – in ways that are very different than his famous Blue Note performances – but which really shape the sound of the music here wonderfully! Harold Mabern's on piano – again bringing in a different feel to this record for the group, with some lyrical undercurrents that are beautiful – and the rest of the lineup features Roy McCurdy on drums and Herb Lewis on bass – in addition to the sublime trumpet of Art Farmer and tenor of Benny Golson. Titles include one of the best versions of "Along Came Betty" that we've ever heard – plus the tracks "Domino", "Another Git Together", "Reggie", and "Space Station.

new John Hicks — In The Mix ... CD
Landmark, 1994. New Copy .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
A wonderful album by pianist John Hicks – which, despite a stupid title that makes it sound like a techno record, is a brilliant batch of easily soulful tunes that ranks with his best work of recent years! The album features Hicks in some fantastic company – most notably bassist Curtis Lundy, who's well-rounded grooves have always provided perfect accompaniment for Hicks' piano, plus Vincent Herring on alto and soprano sax, Cecil Brooks III on drums, and occasional flute by Elise Wood. Tracks have that blocky modal approach that's always made Hicks' work a perfect extension of the post-Coltrane generation – and titles include "Yemenja", "Elation", "Soul Eyes", and "Mind Wine".

new Hannibal Marvin Peterson — One With The Wind ... CD
Muse, 1993. New Copy .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
Hannibal made some mighty wonderful music in the 70s – and he really carries that tradition strongly forward on this overlooked gem from the early 90s! The album's not as boldly righteous as some of Peterson's dates for MPS, but it's still got a hell of a lot of soul – a well-blown trumpet line right out in front, and a soaring, spiritual undercurrent that makes even familiar tunes sparkle with a subtle sense of power. As always with Hannibal's records, the choice of players is great – Joe Ford on alto and tenor, Michael Cochrane on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass, Cecil Brooks III on drums, and Jeff Haynes on percussion – players that fit the Muse Records setting of the date, but seem to rise to new levels in Peterson's company. Titles include "Echoes", "Revelation", "Nile's Song", "One With The Wind", "Change Is Going To Come", and "Glow".

new Southern University Jazz Ensemble/Alvin Batiste — Live At The 1971 American College Jazz Festival ... LP
Jazzstronauts/Family Groove, 1971. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A set that's gotta be one of the most righteous school band records ever – way more than just a bunch of students doing big band numbers, and instead a killer batch of spiritual jazz numbers, directed by the legendary Alvin Batiste! The record's one of a rare few 70s sets of this nature – one that shows a group of younger musicians really reaching out for bold new sounds – every bit as complex and soulful as work on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz, with a firey power that signals a new generation of the jazz underground! And while Batiste is at the head of the group, there's plenty of other great younger players too – including Henry Butler on piano, Henry Scott on flute, Kirk Ford on tenor, Reginald Houston on baritone, Raymond Deggs on trumpet, Julius Farmer on bass, and Herman Jackson on drums! Side one features burning ensemble numbers that include "Music Came", "Tunjii", "Straight Life", and "North American Idiosyncrasy" – and side two features early material by the Henry Butler Trio, on titles that include "So What", "In My Solitude", and "Milestones".

new Trammps — Trammps III ... LP
Atlantic, 1977. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
Not the group's most famous work, but a really strong batch of Philly soul tracks – with production and arrangements by Ron Baker and Norman Harris, in a blinding Sigma Sound mode that shows that the Philly Groove could still be kicking it large in the late 70s. Our favorite track, though, is the mellowest – "Seasons For Girls", which is a beautiful smooth mellow stepper, one that runs for 8 minutes long, with some excellent harmony vocals. Other tracks, though, include "Love Per Hour", "The Night The Lights Went Out", "People Of The World, Rise", and "Living The Life".
(Cover has a cutout notch near the bottom left corner that has torn.)

new Various — Steppin Muzak Presents At The Juke Joint ... CD
Steppin Muzak, 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A different side of the stepper's scene in Chicago – the more bluesy, southern soul-inflected one – kind of a criss-cross of two different modes in the Windy City! The tracks here are from a variety of sources, but all echo kind of a down home mode – often a modern take on older southern styles that comes off with a sweet little groove – one that's almost a musical illustration of the regional shifts that have taken place as folks from points south moved up to Chicago over the years. That's not to say that all the tunes here have Chicago origins, just that they play well in a side of the city's scene – and the track list includes "Hard Road To Travel" by Shakey Jake, "Wrapped Up In Your Love" by Joe Perkins, "That's When The Crying Begins" by Kip Anderson, "A Good Date" by Charles Earland, "Man To Woman" by Lonnie Youngblood, "Too Many Hands" by Otis Clay, "I'm At The Crossroad" by Vernon Garrett, "Blues For Gerry" by Mark III Trio, "Stone Hearted Woman" by Andrew Tibbs, and "Give It Back" by Lee Roberts.

The second in DJ Nu-Mark's Broken Sunlight series of 10 iinch singles – joined by Tiron & Ayomari on "Feel The Way About It" – plus J-Live & Luscious Beats on "Tonight"! "Feel The Way" starts on a laidback funky tip, with a loosely thumping beat under keys and a guitar line. Soulful rhymes by the guests and heavier bass groove is the track progresses. "Tonight' is timeless hip hop win with J-Live & Lucious Beats.

new Lemuria — Lemuria (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy .... $34.99 Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of funk from Hawaii – and a legendary bit of free soul that's been winning global fame for decades! Lemuria is the brainchild of Kirk Thompson – who plays piano, bass, keyboards, and vibes on this very spiritual set of tracks. Master Henry Gibson was one of the executive producers, and he also plays conga on the set – which recalls some of the more spiritual collective funky projects from the early 70s Chicago scene, given a bit of a tropical twist. Many tracks feature vocals by "The Ladies Of Lemuria" – a lovely trio that's got a bit of an Emotions sort of sound – but the jazziness of the tracks is a lot freer than the backings the Emotions ever got, with more of a west coast Fantasy Records kind of approach, touched with some Stevie Wonder-like warmth. Really great all the way through – and impeccably put together, despite the indie origins of the record. Titles include "Get That Happy Feeling", "Hunk Of Heaven", "Dreams", "Mister U", "The Making Of You", and "Mystery Love".

new Seiichi Nakamura — First Contact – Live At The Rob Roy ... CD
King (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A stone smoker from tenorist Seiichi Nakamura – thanks partly to some great trombone from Shigeharu Mukai! Shige's one of our favorite Japanese trombonists from the 70s, and he really gives this session a deep degree of soul – working strongly in the frontline with Seiichi, and getting tight rhythm support from Hiroshi Tamura on piano, Isoo Fukui on bass, and Takuji Kusumoto on drums! Most of the record is in a straight hardbop mode – which really lets the tenor and trombone shine – and titles include "Frank N Earnest", "Closing Theme For Quintet", "Judy's Samba", and "Melba's Blues".

new Namaz with Rachel Gould — 300 MPH ... CD
Software/Creole Stream (Japan), 1981. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Soaring grooves and scatting vocals – a wonderful collaboration between this hip fusion combo and singer Rachel Gould, and one that's right up there with the best German grooves of the Glucklich generation! Rachel only sings on a few of the album's tracks, but those sparkle beautifully with a breezy sort of soul that's totally great – and other instrumental titles have a different sort of appeal, but one that's wonderful too – well-played keyboards and guitar, without some of the fusion excesses of the 70s – served up in lean grooves that bring in a great mix of Brazilian and funky jazz styles. The set's got a warmly appealing sound throughout – but not one that's at all like US fusion of the time – still quite adventurous, and really set free to groove in a joyous sort of way! Titles include "Mystic Latin", "Movin Seconds", "Vom Regen Bogen", "Short Funky", "Congress Of Dreams", "Cyklus III", and "Anticipated Joy".

new Morton Stevens — Hawaii Five-O ... CD
Capitol/Film Score Monthly, 1969. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
If Hawaii was this funky, we'd move there in a minute – and honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if this record did a heck of a lot for the image of state back in the day! The soundtrack is one of our all-time favorites – a driving batch of larger orchestrations that is heavy on percussion, filled with jazzy riffs, and which makes great use of electric bass to round out the bottom nicely! Mort Stevens goes way beyond the typical cop show groove on this one – filling up the record with rich colors, unique tones, and some great inflections on the horn passages that charge each tune with a mad level of excitement. There's some great instrumental touches in the set too – like occasional fuzzed-out guitar, Hammond organ, and even a bit of sweet flute and soulful sax – giving the whole thing a feel that reminds us of Lalo Schifrin's best work from the time. Includes the massive "Hawaii Five-O" theme, plus the cuts "Call To Danger", "Up Tight", "Blues Trip", "The Long Wait", "The Floater", "Beach Trip", "Operation Smash", "McGarrett's Theme", and "Front Street". Book 'em Danno!

new Jerry Butler — Spice Of Life ... LP
Mercury, 1972. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
Perhaps the greatest record Jerry Butler made in the 70s, and a very tight bit of baroque Chicago soul with arrangements and production by Samuel F. Brown III. The tracks are a good mix of originals and covers, and they all show Jerry going way past his Gamble & Huff/Mercury years – into the sophisticated mix of soul, jazz, and studio imagination that was going down on the Chicago scene of the late 60s and early 70s. A few cuts feature duets with Brenda Lee Eager, but the best numbers are the solo ones, like "A Prayer", "That The Way it Was", "If I Could Remember", and "I Need You".

new Bobby Hutcherson, Karin Krog, Archie Shepp — Live At The Festival ... LP
Enja (Germany), 1970/1972/1973. Used .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
A very interesting batch of tracks – one tune apiece by each of the artists named in the title, recorded between the years 1970 and 1973 at the Festival Ljublijana, in Yugoslavia. Bill Evans performs a long, and straight reading of Miles Davis' "Nardis" with a trio that includes Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Oxly on drums; Karin Krog sings a spare version of "Round Midnight", with only the bass of Arild Andersen for accompaniment; and Archie Shepp blows freely on a version of Grachan Moncur III's "Sonny's Back", in a group with Dave Burrell, Don Garrett, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps the most striking track, though, is "The Creators" by Bobby Hutcherson – played with his group that included Harold Land and Hal Galper, and performed in an 18 minute reading that builds beautifully, into the dancing soul jazz sound that was Hutcherson's best contribution to jazz at the time!
(US pressing. Vinyl plays with some light noise. Cover has a cut corner, some wear, some staining, and seam splitting.)
