It's the late 80s and the Rhythm Twins are working here with Fatis Burrell, peddling grooves very much in the Taxi Gang vein, with Sly contributing some snapping beats on his syn drums that echoed the digital revolution taking place in the dancehall. 8 fat tracks in all, including "All Aboard", "Spy Vs Spy", "Super Cool", "First Light", "My Turf", "Free At Last", "Rice & Peas" and "Here & Beyond". AbyssiniansArise ... CD
Virgin, 1978. Used ... $8.99
A mighty roots harmony session! The Abyssinians were one of the first groups at the forefront of reggae to move away from the influence of the American soul scene and forge their own style. This album from the late 70s, a period when a lot of attention was being focused on the island from foreign musical markets, especially British labels like Virgin, is one of their finest efforts, a solid piece of laid back roots vibes, with an insistent, conscious message, and crisp, rolling grooves courtesy Boris Garner, Sly & Robbie, Fully Fullwood, Tommy McCook and many other greats. Includes "This Land Is For Everyone", "Meditation", "Wicked Men", "Dem A Come" and "Let My Days Be Long". CD

Black UhuruSinsemilla (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Mango (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A great one from Black Uhuru! Sinsemilla had a lot to live up to as the follow up to the burning Showcase, but the harmony trio of Michael Rose, Puma Jones and Duckie Simpson rise to the occasion under the heavy guidance of Sly & Robbie. While it didn't produce as many singular hits as some of other other prime records, this one's still solid from top to bottom, with mighty, might Taxi productions grooves throughout. 8 tracks in all: "Happiness", 'World Is Africa", "Push Push", "There Is Fire", "No Loafing (Sit & Wonder)", "Sinsemilla", "Endurance" and "Vampire". King TubbyRocker's Almighty Dub ... LP
Clocktower, Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
10 excellent roots rock rhythms given a nice dub treatment, and though we're selling this record as most shops do, as a King Tubby side, we'd be willing to wager he actually wasn't around his studio when this was mixed, and certainly wasn't around Joe Gibbs' or Bullwackies when the cuts included here from those spots were mixed. Still it's a great set of rhythms, all with excellent spaced out dub mixes, and burning performances at the hands of Sly & Robbie, Family Man, Bagga Morris, Santa Davis, Augustus Pablo and others. With "Rocker's Almighty Dub", "Dunza Dub", "Storm & Lightning", "Something Nice Bout Da Dub", "Upful & Positive Dread", "Hold this Dub" and "21 Gun Salute to Brother Marcus". LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy McCookReggae In Jazz ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Masterful reggae instrumentals from the great Tommy McCook! Reggae In Jazz does indeed have some jazz-steeped solos augmenting the vibe quite nicely, but it's perhaps not the full on reggae/jazz hybrid the title suggests – which is a good thing, actually! The rhythms are strongly rooted in classic Dynamic and Channel One reggae instro territory, but the vibe is enhanced a bit by soul jazzy organ, guitar and more on the solo tip – and a bit of funk, too! Produced by Buster Riley, with Sly Dunbar, Santa Davos. Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Ansel Collins, Jackie Mitoo and other legends on the session. Titles include "Grass Root", "Caution", "Sin", "Wild Bunch", "Bam-Bam", "Collin '1'", "Collin '2'", "Bad Man", "Good Bye". "Black-Out", "Rock Away" and "War". CD version includes the bonus "Beirut" and "Beirut (Version)". CD

A peak level record Johnny Osbourne – working with producer Prince Jammy, with Sly & Robbie on the rhythms –a masterful set that helped lay the groundwork for Johnny's rise to the top of the 80s dancehall scene! It wasn't too long before this record that Johnny was working quite nicely in the roots style. Enter Prince Jammy! The title track here is a stone classic, but the whole record is pretty great! Includes "Mr. Walker", "Jah Ovah", "Cool Down", "Trench Town School", "Fret You A Fret", "Folly Ranking", "Love Song", "Live Right", "Mr. Marshall" and "Time Is Getting Dread". RicoWarrika Dub – Ghetto Rockers ... LP
Island, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Around September 23, 2014
Sweet! A dub companion to Rico's excellent Man From Wareika set. The original LP was an instrumental affair to begin with, so this set reworks the mixes with the parts ducking in and out with a few tasteful dub effects added here and there to add a new dimension to the jazzed up reggae numbers. The group is pretty large, sort of a Jamaican all stars, with names like Sly & Robbie, Skully, and Dirty Harry, running through 9 dubs of tracks from the original album, including "Gunga Din Dub", "Lumumba Dub", "Over The Mountain Dub", "Dial Africa Dub", "Man From Wareika Dub", "Rasta Dub" and "This Day Dub". New Black UhuruBlack Uhuru ... CD
Virgin (UK), 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A collection of tracks released in the US under the name Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, probably Black Uhuru's finest moment, their first set after they made the transition from working with Jammy to Sly & Robbie's forward looking sound, and the first set to include the great Puma Jones as the third voice, replacing Errol Nelson alongside Duckie Simpson and Michael Rose. The entire first side is some of the heaviest modern roots around, solid from start to finish with "Shine Eyed Gal", "Leaving To Zion", "General Penitentiary" and "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", and the second side doesn't let up either, with "Abortion", "Natural Reggae Beat" and "Plastic Smile". Essential! CD

Pretty nice later work from Grace! Although we prefer the percolating disco meets reggae records Grace Jones cut with Sly & Robbie to this later effort – but there's no denying that on a couple of numbers she really clicks with producer Trevor Horn's slick sheen. With "Ladies & Gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones", "Jones The Rhythm", "The Fashion Show", "The Frog & The Princess" and "Slave To The Rhythm". LP, Vinyl record album

The debut album from the second lineup of Black Uhuru, with Duckie Simpson, Michael Rose and Errol Nelson. Produced by Prince Jammy, this is a tremendous slice of rootsy rockers, even if it doesn't quite top the later version of the group with Puma Jones and Sly & Robbie's production. This later Greensleeves edition was remixed by Jammy at Tubby's in 1981, and includes "Time To Unite", "Love Crisis", "Willow Tree", "African Love", "Eden Out Deh", "I Love King Selassie", "Hard Ground" and a great version of Marley's "Natural Mystic". New Grace JonesNightclubbing ... CD
Island, 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from Grace Jones – a record that has her shedding some of the disco excesses of earlier years, and moving into a great blend of sounds that really showcases the energy of the New York scene from which she sprang! The album was recorded in Nassau, with help from Sly Dunbar on drums, Robbie Shakespeare on bass, and Wally Badarou on keyboards – and most tunes have an edgier feel that makes Jones sound even darker than before. There's loads of great disco-not-disco moments – from the straight funk of "Pull Up To The Bumper" to the insane post-punk grooving of "Demolition Man" – to other tracks that include "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", "Art Groupie", "Walking In The Rain", "Nightclubbing", and "Use Me".
