AbyssiniansSatta Massagana (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Jam Sounds/Heartbeat, 1976. Used ... $9.99
An essential reissue of an essential roots album! A mid 70s landmark of harmony roots, the Abyssinians' Satta Massagana, aka Forward To Zion, is hard to beat for hardcore, spiritual roots delivered over hypnotically pulsing rhythms, and Heartbeat ups the ante by digging deep for some excellent and essential dubs and extended mixes, plus several sweet bonus numbers. Sly and Robbie, plus Horsemouth and Boo Richards, Micky Chung, Chinna Smith, Clive Hunt and Geoffrey Chung are among their erstwhile co-conspirators on this self produced gem. 18 tracks in all, including "Declaration Of Rights", "The Good Lord", "Forward Unto Zion", "Know Jah Today", "Abendigo", "Y Mas Gan", "Black Man's Strain", "Satta Massagana", "I & I", "African Race", "Leggo beast", "Peculiar Number", "Reason Time", "There Is No End", "Jerusalem", "Leggo Beast Dub", "Abendigo (extended mix)" and "Poor Jah Whyte (extended mix)". Black UhuruSinsemilla (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Mango (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A great one from Black Uhuru! Sinsemilla had a lot to live up to as the follow up to the burning Showcase, but the harmony trio of Michael Rose, Puma Jones and Duckie Simpson rise to the occasion under the heavy guidance of Sly & Robbie. While it didn't produce as many singular hits as some of other other prime records, this one's still solid from top to bottom, with mighty, might Taxi productions grooves throughout. 8 tracks in all: "Happiness", 'World Is Africa", "Push Push", "There Is Fire", "No Loafing (Sit & Wonder)", "Sinsemilla", "Endurance" and "Vampire". Grace JonesNightclubbing ... CD
Island, 1981. New Copy ... $4.99 5.98
One of our favorite albums ever from Grace Jones – a record that has her shedding some of the disco excesses of earlier years, and moving into a great blend of sounds that really showcases the energy of the New York scene from which she sprang! The album was recorded in Nassau, with help from Sly Dunbar on drums, Robbie Shakespeare on bass, and Wally Badarou on keyboards – and most tunes have an edgier feel that makes Jones sound even darker than before. There's loads of great disco-not-disco moments – from the straight funk of "Pull Up To The Bumper" to the insane post-punk grooving of "Demolition Man" – to other tracks that include "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", "Art Groupie", "Walking In The Rain", "Nightclubbing", and "Use Me". King TubbyRocker's Almighty Dub ... LP
Clocktower, Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
10 excellent roots rock rhythms given a nice dub treatment, and though we're selling this record as most shops do, as a King Tubby side, we'd be willing to wager he actually wasn't around his studio when this was mixed, and certainly wasn't around Joe Gibbs' or Bullwackies when the cuts included here from those spots were mixed. Still it's a great set of rhythms, all with excellent spaced out dub mixes, and burning performances at the hands of Sly & Robbie, Family Man, Bagga Morris, Santa Davis, Augustus Pablo and others. With "Rocker's Almighty Dub", "Dunza Dub", "Storm & Lightning", "Something Nice Bout Da Dub", "Upful & Positive Dread", "Hold this Dub" and "21 Gun Salute to Brother Marcus". LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy McCookReggae In Jazz ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Masterful reggae instrumentals from the great Tommy McCook! Reggae In Jazz does indeed have some jazz-steeped solos augmenting the vibe quite nicely, but it's perhaps not the full on reggae/jazz hybrid the title suggests – which is a good thing, actually! The rhythms are strongly rooted in classic Dynamic and Channel One reggae instro territory, but the vibe is enhanced a bit by soul jazzy organ, guitar and more on the solo tip – and a bit of funk, too! Produced by Buster Riley, with Sly Dunbar, Santa Davos. Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Ansel Collins, Jackie Mitoo and other legends on the session. Titles include "Grass Root", "Caution", "Sin", "Wild Bunch", "Bam-Bam", "Collin '1'", "Collin '2'", "Bad Man", "Good Bye". "Black-Out", "Rock Away" and "War". CD version includes the bonus "Beirut" and "Beirut (Version)". CD

The debut album from the second lineup of Black Uhuru, with Duckie Simpson, Michael Rose and Errol Nelson. Produced by Prince Jammy, this is a tremendous slice of rootsy rockers, even if it doesn't quite top the later version of the group with Puma Jones and Sly & Robbie's production. This later Greensleeves edition was remixed by Jammy at Tubby's in 1981, and includes "Time To Unite", "Love Crisis", "Willow Tree", "African Love", "Eden Out Deh", "I Love King Selassie", "Hard Ground" and a great version of Marley's "Natural Mystic". New Serge GainsbourgAux Armes Et Caetera ... CD
Philips (France), 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little album from Serge – possibly his last truly genius record, and one with a very unusual twist! The album was recorded in Jamaica with production from Sly & Robbie – very much in the late 70s, big-business reggae mode – but done with Serge's usual flair for the lyric. The album's not really a reggae album – more a set of dubby tracks that have a similar feel to some of Serge's other backings during the 70s, with whispered sexy lyrics over the top. The record shouldn't work, but it does – and picks up a sound that's similar to Serge's work on the excellent album L'Homme A Tete Chou! Titles include "Relax Baby Be Cool", "Daisy Temple", "Javanaise Remake", "Pas Long Feu", and "Marilou Reggae Dub". CD

New Desmond DekkerBlack & Dekker – The Complete Stiff Recordings 1980 to 1983 (Black & Dekker/Compass Point/bonus tracks) ... CD
Stiff/Pressure Drop (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The complete Stiff Records work of Desmond Dekker – served up here on two albums, plus bonus tracks too! First up is Black & Dekker – surprisingly great later work from the legendary Desmond Dekker – a set that should have been a sloppy cash-in during the ska revival, but material that shows Desmond still very much at the top of his game! The production and backings show a bit of a late 70s British touch, but Dekker's vocals are still very much his own – and the tunes really faithfully stay in the groove that made him so great in the first place. Titles include "Israelites", "Lickin' Stick", "It Mek", "Please Don't Bend", "Many Rivers To Cross", "Hippo", "Juliet", "007", "Work It Out", "Problems", "Rude Boy Train", "Pickney Gal" and "Why Fight". On the Compass Point album, Desmond Dekker gets a bit of a contemporary groove – working at the Compass Point studios, in a mode that inflects his early ska roots with some hip early 80s production touches too! The approach still has all the charm of Dekker's classic recordings, but brings in some of the more offbeat elements of the Sly & Robbie generation – in a Compass Point mode that's never too trippy or self-indulgent, but which definitely adds just the right bits to keep things interesting. Titles include "Isabella", "Hurts So Bad", "We Can & Shall", "Big Headed", and "That's My Woman". CD features bonus tracks "Workout (groove version)", "Hot City", "Book Of Rules", and "That's My Woman (rmx)". CD

Philips/Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 12CD ... Out Of Stock
Amazing music – at an equally amazing price! The set features every studio album ever recorded by Serge Gainsbourg – monumental sounds that completely transformed the world of French music in the 60s and 70s, and have gone on to have a global impact well into the 21st Century! The sounds here are amazing right from the start – a mix of jazz, Latin, and other hip modes – all set to playfully sinister lyrics by Serge – which get even better as the 60s move on, and Gainsbourg dips into fuzz, funk, and other amazing elements to push out some far frontiers in his music! The 70s sees some great electronics, classic collaborations with Sly & Robbie, and gives way to some surprisingly great 80s material towards the end of Serge's too-short career. Box features 14 albums on 12 CDs – with records that include Du Chant A La Une, No 2, L'Etonnant Serge Gainsbourg, No 4, Gainsbourg Percussions, Initials BB, Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg, Histoire De Melody Nelson, Vu De L'Exterieur, L'Homme A Tete De Chou, Aux Armes Et Caetera, Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles, Love On The Beat, and You're Under Arrest.
