Amp Fiddler/Sly & RobbieInspiration Information Vol 1 ... CD
Strut (UK), 2008. Used .... $7.99
An incredible meeting of talents – one we never would have expected in a million years, but which comes off beautifully throughout! The spacey genius of Amp Fiddler meets the Jamaican grooves of Sly & Robbie – in a blend that's breathtaking – one that takes all of Amp's crackling energy, and sets it up nicely against some warmer, more organic elements – great bass from Robbie, drums and programs from Sly, and additional guitar from Dalton Browne and percussion from Sticky Thompson! Amp Fiddler sings throughout – in that cool, spaced-out style of his we love so much – and the tunes have a really hypnotic, genre-crossing quality – right up there with that great 80s moment when Sly & Robbie were coming into play with a range of US and UK artists – with similarly groundbreaking results. Titles include "Crazy Day", "I Fell On The Wagon", "Drama Inside", "Blackhouse", "U", "Serious", "Vibrationship", "Changes", and "This World". CD

Black UhuruSinsemilla (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Mango (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue).... $28.99
A great one from Black Uhuru! Sinsemilla had a lot to live up to as the follow up to the burning Showcase, but the harmony trio of Michael Rose, Puma Jones and Duckie Simpson rise to the occasion under the heavy guidance of Sly & Robbie. While it didn't produce as many singular hits as some of other other prime records, this one's still solid from top to bottom, with mighty, might Taxi productions grooves throughout. 8 tracks in all: "Happiness", 'World Is Africa", "Push Push", "There Is Fire", "No Loafing (Sit & Wonder)", "Sinsemilla", "Endurance" and "Vampire". Desmond DekkerBlack & Dekker – The Complete Stiff Recordings 1980 to 1983 (Black & Dekker/Compass Point/bonus tracks) ... CD
Stiff/Pressure Drop (UK), Early 80s. New Copy .... $14.99
The complete Stiff Records work of Desmond Dekker – served up here on two albums, plus bonus tracks too! First up is Black & Dekker – surprisingly great later work from the legendary Desmond Dekker – a set that should have been a sloppy cash-in during the ska revival, but material that shows Desmond still very much at the top of his game! The production and backings show a bit of a late 70s British touch, but Dekker's vocals are still very much his own – and the tunes really faithfully stay in the groove that made him so great in the first place. Titles include "Israelites", "Lickin' Stick", "It Mek", "Please Don't Bend", "Many Rivers To Cross", "Hippo", "Juliet", "007", "Work It Out", "Problems", "Rude Boy Train", "Pickney Gal" and "Why Fight". On the Compass Point album, Desmond Dekker gets a bit of a contemporary groove – working at the Compass Point studios, in a mode that inflects his early ska roots with some hip early 80s production touches too! The approach still has all the charm of Dekker's classic recordings, but brings in some of the more offbeat elements of the Sly & Robbie generation – in a Compass Point mode that's never too trippy or self-indulgent, but which definitely adds just the right bits to keep things interesting. Titles include "Isabella", "Hurts So Bad", "We Can & Shall", "Big Headed", and "That's My Woman". CD features bonus tracks "Workout (groove version)", "Hot City", "Book Of Rules", and "That's My Woman (rmx)". CD

DJ KrushShinsou – The Message At The Depth ... CD
Red Ink/Sony, 2002. Used .... $4.99
The latest salvo from Krush, and he keeps getting more and more out, but that's always been the best thing about his approach – the way he can take abstract sounds, and snap them into a dope beat. We thought from the first half of this disc that he's been listening to a lot of the noisier new breed of underground hip hop, like the Def Jux camp, and you can tell by who he's selected to collaborate with this go 'round that he's feeling the leftfield approach: Anticon, the Opus and Anti Pop Consortium, but he pulls in Sly & Robbie, vocalists Angelina Esparza and Abijah too, for the jazzier half of the disc. Eleven tracks in all, including "Trihedron", "Sanity Requiem", "The Blackhole", "D'You Hear That", "The Lost Voices" and "What About Tomorrow". CD

Gwen GuthriePadlock – Special Mixes By Larry Levan ... LP
Island, 1983. Sealed .... $9.99
A mini-LP, but one that packs more punch than most full length sets – thanks to a top-shelf lineup all the way through! The set's a project put together by Sly & Robbie, and recorded at Compass Point Studios – all with a groove that's kind of a dubbier take on the sound of New York dancefloors a the time – nicely bassy, slightly beaty, and topped with some really wonderful vocals from Gwen Guthrie! Larry Levan mixed the whole thing to perfection, giving it a real Paradise groove – and instrumentation is by Wally Badarou on synth, Harry Whitaker on keyboards, Darryl Thompson on guitars, and Jimmy Maelin on percussion. The set's kind of a mini-suite, based around a few key musical themes – and titles include "Padlock", "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Peanut Butter" and "Getting Hot". LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy McCookReggae In Jazz ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
Masterful reggae instrumentals from the great Tommy McCook! Reggae In Jazz does indeed have some jazz-steeped solos augmenting the vibe quite nicely, but it's perhaps not the full on reggae/jazz hybrid the title suggests – which is a good thing, actually! The rhythms are strongly rooted in classic Dynamic and Channel One reggae instro territory, but the vibe is enhanced a bit by soul jazzy organ, guitar and more on the solo tip – and a bit of funk, too! Produced by Buster Riley, with Sly Dunbar, Santa Davos. Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Ansel Collins, Jackie Mitoo and other legends on the session. Titles include "Grass Root", "Caution", "Sin", "Wild Bunch", "Bam-Bam", "Collin '1'", "Collin '2'", "Bad Man", "Good Bye". "Black-Out", "Rock Away" and "War". CD version includes the bonus "Beirut" and "Beirut (Version)". CD

The Don tells it like it is – in this classic batch of tracks from one of the sharpest singers on the Jamaican scene of the 70s! Leroy Smart has an edge that's quite different than some of his bigger contemporaries – a vibe that echoes his look on the cover, and which is reflected strongly in the lyrics of the tunes – which are often nicely matter of fact, definitely in a way that tells it like it is! Production is by Bunny Lee on all tracks, with some nicely deep touches – thanks partly to rhythms from Sly & Robbie, organ from Winston Wright, and piano from Jackie Mittoo. Titles include "Mr Smart", "God Helps The Man", "Pride & Ambition", "Wreck Up My Life", "Mr Richman", and "It Makes No Sense". New Serge GainsbourgL'Essential Des Albums Studio – 14 Albums Originaux 1958 to 1987 (12 CD set) ... CD
Philips/Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 12CD .... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing music – at an equally amazing price! The set features every studio album ever recorded by Serge Gainsbourg – monumental sounds that completely transformed the world of French music in the 60s and 70s, and have gone on to have a global impact well into the 21st Century! The sounds here are amazing right from the start – a mix of jazz, Latin, and other hip modes – all set to playfully sinister lyrics by Serge – which get even better as the 60s move on, and Gainsbourg dips into fuzz, funk, and other amazing elements to push out some far frontiers in his music! The 70s sees some great electronics, classic collaborations with Sly & Robbie, and gives way to some surprisingly great 80s material towards the end of Serge's too-short career. Box features 14 albums on 12 CDs – with records that include Du Chant A La Une, No 2, L'Etonnant Serge Gainsbourg, No 4, Gainsbourg Percussions, Initials BB, Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg, Histoire De Melody Nelson, Vu De L'Exterieur, L'Homme A Tete De Chou, Aux Armes Et Caetera, Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles, Love On The Beat, and You're Under Arrest. New Gwen GuthriePortrait (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. Used .... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes of Harry Whitaker, Bernie Worrell, and Wally Badarou – all massive talents that bring a nice sweet jazzy sound to the best cuts on the record. There's a definite 80s sing-song groove going on – in that not-yet-top-of-the-charts soul sound that you'd hear on the better small urban stations at the time – moving back and forth nicely, in a strong link between the mainstream and the underground clubs! Tracks include "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Oh What A Life", "Younger Than Me", and a nice cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Padlock (Larry Levan special mix)", "Hopscotch (Larry Levan rmx inst)", and "Peanut Butter (Larry Levan special mix)". CD

New Grace JonesNightclubbing ... CD
Island, 1981. New Copy .... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from Grace Jones – a record that has her shedding some of the disco excesses of earlier years, and moving into a great blend of sounds that really showcases the energy of the New York scene from which she sprang! The album was recorded in Nassau, with help from Sly Dunbar on drums, Robbie Shakespeare on bass, and Wally Badarou on keyboards – and most tunes have an edgier feel that makes Jones sound even darker than before. There's loads of great disco-not-disco moments – from the straight funk of "Pull Up To The Bumper" to the insane post-punk grooving of "Demolition Man" – to other tracks that include "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", "Art Groupie", "Walking In The Rain", "Nightclubbing", and "Use Me". New Black UhuruDub Factor ... CD
Mango/Island, 1983. New Copy .... Out Of Stock
One of our top 10 dub albums of all time! This album bridges the gap between the the low-fi, down and dirty excursions of the 70's dub era, and the later high tech dub revolution brought on by On-U, Mad Professor and Jah Shaka. The rhythms here are all first rate, drawn mostly from their Chill Out LP with a few from Red, fueled by Sly and Robbie and a cast of regulars from the Island/Mango stable. Sly & Robbie also handle the production duties, and there's no shortage of fat grooves and unrelenting rhythms, then taken to the next level with deep space echo drops and 21st century sound effects and tape edits. Includes "Ion Storm", "Big Spliff", "Boof'N'Baff'N'Biff", "Puffed Out" and "Android Rebellion".
