new Billy Martin & Wil Blades — Shimmy ... CD
Royal Potato, 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A funky funky shimmy from Billy Martin and Wil Blades – a very spare, stripped-down set that's heavy on drums from Martin, and lots of great Hammond and clavinet from Blades! The groove is a lot more focuses, and decidedly more gritty than we've heard from either player of late – almost a return back to 60s soul jazz roots than inspired them both – but touched with some tight 70s funk on the rhythms as well! Tracks include "Deep In A Fried Pickle", "Les & Eddie", "Pick Pocket", "Mean Greens", "Brother Bru", "Toe Thumb", and "Little Shimmy".

Fred Bongusto — Super Fantozzi (with bonus download) ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1986. New Copy .... $19.99
Fred Bongusto comes up with a plenty playful score for this goofy 80s film – the story of civilization, but from the perspective of a loser! The music moves between serious scoring and more whimsical numbers – the latter of which feature more of the 80s elements, especially keyboards, that you might expect from the date – especially on the clubby-grooving main theme. Other instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic – sometimes the former aping the latter – and this deluxe reissue features 28 tracks that include "Super Torneo", "Tema D'Amore Excalibur", "Fantozzo Antico", "Regata Super", "Super Maratona", "Super Shimmy", and "Super Jazz Club".
(Limited edition – with bonus download card too!)

new David Boykin — Live At The Dorchester Projects ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2013. New Copy .... $13.99
One of the greatest albums so far from mighty Chicago reedman David Boykin – and easily a set that lives up to the rich legacy of avant jazz in the Windy City! There's a depth to the record that comes through right from the very first note – a sense of history and feeling that shows just how much Boykin's developed as a player over the past decade or so – a tenorist with a done that's right up there with Archie Shepp or David Murray at their creative best – really stretching out on some wonderful solos that never fail to dim in imagination or new ideas. The group's a trio – with Alex Wing on bass and James Woodley on drums – which gives the recording an almost ESP Records sort of vibe – and Boykin's the shining star throughout, really knocking us over with his solos on the well-recorded set! Titles include "Blast Off For Love", "Walk Turn Bat Shimmy", "Try Harder", "Blue Lotus", "Star Book", and "Late Night With The David Boykin Trio Theme".
Also available: Live At The Dorchester Projects (with download) ... LP $16.99

new James Brown — Excitement ... LP
King, 1962. Very Good .... $9.99
A darn hard to find album by James – one with a tight soulful R&B groove that just about never lets up! Even on these early albums, James had a great raw sound, with a kind of funk that wasn't his trademark 70s sound, but which is still nice and tasty. Titles include "Shout & Shimmy", "Dancin Little Thing", "It Was You", "Come Over Here", "Begging, Begging", and "Tell Me What You're Gonna Do".
(80s French Polydor pressing. Cover has a small name in marker on front.)

Toussaint McCall — Nothing Takes The Place Of You ... CD
Ronn/P-Vine (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy .... $29.99
An amazing collection of work from Toussaint McCall – a set that finally gives this classic soul singer his due! McCall stands as one of the best southern soul singers of his time – and one who's often painfully overshadowed by the better known singers on Atlantic and the larger labels. His hit "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" is well known as a soul classic – but Toussaint recorded a number of other tracks during the 60s, nearly all of them as sublime as that hit! This 24 track package is oddly one of the first times that this work has been properly collected together – and the compilation is a much-needed look at Toussaint's incredible soul talents. Trust us, you'll be playing this one again and again – right next to your Dave Godin Deep Soul volumes, or your James Carr reissues! Titles include "Nothing Takes The Place of You", "One Table Away", "What Part Do I Play", "That's Life", "Shimmy", "The Toussaint Shuffle", "I'm Gonna Make Me A Woman", "I'll Do It For You", "The Title Escapes Me", "Step By Step", and "All For A Love Like You".

Ol Dirty Bastard — N***a Please (clean edited promo) ... LP
Elektra/Wu-Tang, 1999. Near Mint- 2LP .... $4.99
Dirt Dog's 2nd album is a little more schizophrenic, twisted, and under the influence than his first. It sounds a little more inspired by Rick James and Flavor Flav, as raw dog as a hip hopper can shimmy without getting arrested. Tracks include "Cold Blooded", "Rollin Wit You", "Gettin High", "You Don't Want To F**k With Me", "Dirt Dog", "I Can't Wait", "Recognize" featuring a cameo by Chris Rock, the summer party bumper "Got Your Money" featuring the sweet vocals of Kelis, "Good Morning Heartache" featuring Lil' Mo, the title track, and more.

new Ol Dirty Bastard — Return To The 36 Chambers – The Dirty Version ... LP
Elektra/Get On Down, 1995. New Copy 2LP (reissue).... $19.99 20.98
Ol' Dirty Bastard...Osiris...Big Baby Jesus...what can we say? Whether ODB had really fallen off the deep end or if it was just an act, this is still one of our favorite Wu-Tang related LP's – with more energy and sense of humor than most, and featuring the best hip hop singing since Biz Markie! Titles include "Brooklyn Zoo", "Baby C'mon", "Proteck Ya Neck II", "Cuttin Headz", "Hippa To Da Hoppa", "Shimmy Shimmy Ya", and lots more. 15 tracks on 2LPs.

Steve Parks — Movin' In The Right Direction (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solid Smoke/Shout (Japan), 1981. New Copy .... $24.99
A completely unique little set from singer Steve Parks – a set cut in the Bay Area scene of the early 80s – but done with a righteous 70s vibe that mixes jazz, soul, and bits of Latin influences as well! The overall approach is definitely soul, but there's plenty of jazz inflections in the vocals and instrumentation – a vibe that's not unlike the best sound of Jon Lucien on RCA, but which is carried here by Parks with a bit more force – and these undeniably fluid vocals sounds that really blow us away! Instrumentation is right on the money – warm, jazzy, and never hokey at all – with lots of great acoustic percussion at the core. Titles include the massive sample track "Movin In The Right Direction" – plus "All In A Day", "Everything's Gonna Be OK", "Don't Stop Now", "The Golden Key", and "Sadness In My Samba". CD features an insane number of bonus tracks – 9 more numbers that include "Wrong Decision", "Should've Been Wishing", "Wonderful", "Stop Drop Everything", "You Make It Easy For Me", and "Shimmy & Jive".

Various — Great Googa Mooga – These Words Don't Make No Sense ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy .... $15.99
An instant party throughout – a bubbling set of R&B and soul tracks with a focus on goofy lyrics and nonsensical bits! The tracks here really unlock the grooviest part of older R&B styles – the hard-hitting sounds that have been compiled on sets like Stompin over the years, distilled down into one great 27 track set – complete with the high standards for sound quality and liner notes we've come to expect from the Ace label! Pop this one in the CD player, crack open a few beers, and we can guarantee there won't be a stick of furniture left standing in the house by the end! Titles include "Um Bow Bow" by The Bobbettes, "Yama Yama Pretty Mama" by Richard Berry, "Bip Bop Bip" by Pretty Boy, "Ookey Ook" by The Penguins, "Great Googa Mooga" by Tom & Jerrio, "Rubber Biscuit" by The Chips, "Jambo" by Claude McLin, "Ay La Bay" by Dolly Cooper, "Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop" by Little Anthony & The Imperials, "Voodoo Voodoo" by Lavern Baker, and "Boom Pacha Boom" by Billy Byrd & His Penguins.

Various — Thai Beat A Go Go Vol 2 – Groovy 60's Sounds From The Land Of Smile ... CD
Subliminal Sounds, 1960s. New Copy .... $13.99
The record's subtitled "Groovy 60s Sounds From The Land Of Smile" – and we'd be hard-pressed to argue! Volume 2 in the Thai Beat series takes a firmly groovy tack – it's filled with the bubbly energy, moddish drum kick, and all-around day glo go go feel of sunniest American kitsch of the era – as portrayed in Thailand! 20 tracks in all: "Yok Yok (Jump Jump)" by Viparat Piengsuwan, "Ding Dong" by SURAPON, "Mia Chaa (My Darling)" by Waipot Petsuwan, "Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Pop" by The Reasons, "Nai Teum (Cool Guy)" by Viparat Piengsuwan, "Lady Madonna" by Sodsai Chaengkij, "Funky Broadway" by Suda Chuenbarn and tons more!

new James Brown — Pure Dynamite! (original pressing) ... LP
King, 1964. Used Gatefold .... $34.99 Out Of Stock
Raw live energy from the great James Brown – and a record that comes hot on the heels of Live At The Apollo! Like that one, this set was supposedly "recorded on the spot" – and it's even harder, faster, and noisier than that classic – with a loud-bursting sound that definitely lives up to the "dynamite" title, and which is far more unbridled than James on his King studio albums. Tha crowds seem to get equal time in front of the microphones as James – further enforcing the liveness of the record – and titles include "I'll Never Let You Go", "Good Good Lovin", "Shout & Shimmy", "Like A Baby", and "I'm Tired But I'm Clean".
(Heavy black label pressing – very nice!)

new El Michels Affair — Enter The 37th Chamber ... LP
Fat Beats, 2009. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
Cinematic funky soul instrumentals from the El Michels Affair – the loose NYC collective's long awaited full length nod to the Wu Tang Clan! The crew brings their tried and true slow rolling and dirty funk to their interpretations of classic Wu Tang tracks, with some straight up beautiful sophisticated soul backdrops, too, and Leon & the crew pull it all off masterfully! The RZA's sonic stamp is too innovative and idiosyncratic for a simple live band rehash, and the group is wise to use the famous crackling sample built soundscapes to craft both an homage to the Wu Tang's best material, as well as the 70s funk, soul and cinema sounds that informed them in the first place. A few of the tracks first blew our minds as funky 45s, and this full formed set was worth the wait – from the moody organ funk of "Can It All Be So Simple", the funky drummer rhythms of "Uzi (Pinky Ring)", the string accented moods of "Heaven And Hell", the brass band and children's chorus cover of "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and lots more! Other tracks include "Glaciers Of Ice", "Incarcerated Scarfaces", "Bring Da Ruckus" and more.

new Various — Vital Organs ... CD
Groovy Sounds, 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $3.99 13.99 Out Of Stock
One of the cookingest funky compilations we've ever carried – a monster batch of 10 funky Hammond organ tracks, all pretty darn obscure! The set was done under the supervision of New York Funk 45 DJ Mr Fine Wine – and features a stunning batch of tunes that are all plenty darn hard to find – and filled with heavy drums, roaring basslines, and super-smoking work on keyboards! Plus, unlike lots of other dodgy sets on the market, the whole thing's totally legit – and very well researched and thought out. Titles include "Cool Dad" by Ross Carnegie, "The Hatch" by The TMGs, "Every Time part 2" by Buddy McKnight, "Soul Power" by Jimmy Willis, "Foot Stumping" by The Organics, "Put Your Weight On It part 1" by The Filmore St Soul Rebellions, "Shimmy" by Toussaint McCall, and "Don't Give A Damn" by King Cain/Silvertone Band. Great!

new Kramer — Brill Building ... CD
Tzadik, 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98 Out Of Stock
A pretty amazing little record – not only one of the greatest things that Kramer's ever done, but a wonderful tribute to the music of the New York scene in the 60s! As you'd guess from the title, most tracks here come from the Brill Building scene – yet Kramer transforms them with a Shimmy Disc sort of approach – playfully dynamic from the perspective of sounds and instrumentation, yet oddly faithful to the heart of the original tunes – a style that gives the record a bit more sincerity than most of his work – while still delivering the same sort of creative punch! Titles include "Save The Last Dance For Me", "I Want Candy", "He Hit Me", "Baby It's You", "I Love How You Love Me", "Paradise", and "Spanish Harlem".
