new Kool & The Gang — Kool & The Gang ... LP
De-Lite, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A landmark album of funky genius – and one of the first times a batch of funky 45s had ever been so tightly sewn into a full LP! By the time of this album's release, Kool & The Gang were already underground legends – cutting it up in small clubs around the east and midwest, and working hard to push their excellent early singles on the De-Lite label – the kind of indie funky 45s that went on to shape the sound of a generation to come! This album brings together a number of those singles – really great little tracks that you can't really ever find on wax, and which have the group's perfect blend of bass/drum rhythms, choppy guitar, and hard-blaring horns – a massive groove that's still tighter here than any of the countless combos the record went onto inspire. The LP's a non-stop jam all the way through, with funk so pure it could be considered the blueprint for a generation – and titles include "Give It Up", "Raw Hamburger", "Kool's Back Again", "Breeze & Soul", "Sea of Tranquility", and "Kool & The Gang".

Kool & The Gang — Kool Jazz ... LP
De-Lite, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A great album from Kool & The Gang! The set's designed to focus on the jazzier side of the group – and it sifts through the first few albums to come up with some of the more sophisticated (yet still totally funky!) numbers by the band, giving a good picture of the many sides of their talents, and also adding in a few other tracks that we haven't found on other records. The groove ranges from slow-dope and mellow, to choppy and funky, with plenty of hot breaks and classic hip hop samples. Titles include the monster jammer "Dujii", plus "Lucky For Me", "Sea Of Tranquility", "North East South West", "I Remember John W Coltrane", "Sombrero Sam", and "Breeze & Soul", a very tasty little jangly number!

Arthur Lyman — Taboo – The Exotic Sounds Of Arthur Lyman ... LP
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Very Good- .... $4.99
One of Arthur Lyman's first LPs –- a brilliant set of percussively grooving tracks, modulated at a low tempo, and recorded in the Henry J. Kaiser aluminum dome in Hawaii with a sound that inspired countless other exotic groups. Art plays vibes, and is augmented by percussion and piano, plus other bits of exotic instrumentation. Cuts include "Hilo March", "Sim Sim", "China Clipper", and "Sea Breeze".
(Vinyl has some marks that click on a few tracks. Cover has some wear, with small splits on the top and bottom seams.)

George Otsuka — Page 3 – Last Summer ... CD
Takt (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $34.99
Page three in the early chapter of drummer George Otsuka – and a record that has him stretching out even more than before! Back in the 60s, Otsuka was easily one of the most expressive leaders in Japan – an artist who held all the tightness that the scene had embraced earlier in the decade – yet who could really stretch out in ways that pointed towards Japanese piano trio freedom to come in the 70s! This album's a perfect example of the richness of Otsuka's skills – bold and modern some moments, yet swinging the next – lyrical at points, yet never sleepy – and always driven with this sense of majesty that few of his contemporaries on the scene could match. The group features sublime work on piano from Hideo Ichikawa and bass from Masaoki Terakawa – on titles that include "Sea View", "Breeze Brook & Birds", "Last Summer", and "The Things We Did Last Summer".
(Special on-demand CD from Sony Japan – done in very limited quantities, as a way of reissuing these rare jazz gems – and still with full color artwork!)

new Nino Rota — Plein Soleil ... CD
Universal (France), 1960. New Copy .... $14.99
A rare French soundtrack by Nino Rota, done for this 1960 film by Rene Clement – but filled with all the bold themes and whimsical moments of Rota's best work for Fellini! Clement's film has some beautifully spare moments that Rota scores perfectly here – letting the music drift along with the gentlest breeze on the sea, but contrasting in other moments with a more dramatic orchestral theme. CD marks the first real reissue of the material in this form ever – and is done with the very high standards of others in the Ecoutez Le Cinema series – with detailed notes in English and French, and lots of great shots from the film! Titles include "Meurte De Philippe", "Plein Soleil", Via Veneto", "Falsification", "La Plage", and "La Gemissante".

new Skeets McDonald — Goin Steady With The Blues (plus early singles) ... CD
Righteous/Capitol (UK), 1958. New Copy .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
A nice late 50s record Skeets McDonald cut for Capitol that probably left a few heads spinning back in its day for its mix of twangy vocals, bluesy song choices, guitar & rhythms more often than not steeped in rockabilly – and probably would annoy hard honky tonk purists to this day – but damn it all, it sounds pretty great to us! Stylistic lines were drawn pretty clearly in the late 50s in the hillbilly music racket, and the records that crossed them either failed commercially or made legends. Some did both. This one finds middle ground, hardly iconic, but still wholly pleasing proto-rock informed late 50s country. Titles include "Goin Steady With The Blues", "Gone And Left Blues", "Yard And A Half Blues", "Hawaiian Sea Breeze", "Fort Worth Jail" and more. This Righteous UK CD includes early singles that are mostly straight up rockabilly, including "You Oughta See Grandma Rock", "Heart-Breaking Mama", "Mean & Evil Blues" and more.

Isley Brothers — 3 + 3 (plus bonus track) ... CD
T Neck/Legacy, 1973. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Other tracks include "Listen To The Music", "If You Were There", "What It Comes Down To", and "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". CD includes bonus live version of "That Lady".

Janko Nilovic — Last Impressions – Remixes ... LP
Vadim (France), 1970s. New Copy 2LP .... $14.99
The Remixes are great – tunes that show a loving, understanding appreciation of Nilovic's original music – thanks to a well-selected batch of talents on the set! Most of the numbers hardly veer much from the great grooves that Janko first penned – as they're all awash in the best acoustic elements and electronic moments without going too far into abstract, contemporary territory – as can happen in some too-remixed projects we've heard of late. Titles include "Spacial Special" remixed by Minimatic, "African Boost" remixed by Kid Loco, "Summer Breeze" remixed by The Big Knife, "Escape To Chelsea" remixed by Casbah 73, "Tandoori Flock" remixed by Patchworks, "Leslie's Back" remixed by DJ Day, "New Post Scriptum" remixed by Metropolitan Jazz Affair, and "Vocal Improvisations" remixed by Cucumber.

Oscar Pettiford — Oscar Pettiford Orchestra In Hi Fi Volume 2 ... LP
ABC, 1956. Very Good .... $14.99
Pettiford's second album of big band tracks for ABC during the 50s – a more open-ended set than the previous one, with modernist touches that really make the set sparkle nicely. Part of these are due to Gigi Gryce, who plays alto on the record, and probably had a bit of a hand in arrangements. Other players include Art Farmer, Jerome Richardson, and Al Grey – and tracks include "I Remember Clifford", "Little Niles", "Now See How You Are", and "Seabreeze".
(Vinyl has some light surface marks, but is clean and plays well overall. Cover is nice.)

Roxy Music — Roxy Music (with bonus track) ... CD
Reprise, 1972. Used .... $4.99
The startlingly brilliant debut by Roxy Music – one of the most unique rock & roll albums of the early 70s, and a standard bearer for much of the art rock to come! From the group's flashy appearance, to their celebration of subverted rock & pop cliches, it's the kind of record that would have come off as a pompous mess in lesser hands – but this is a work of genuine genius. Brian Eno's manipulated outer edge soundscapes are still astonishing – but each player brings something real to the table – from Ferry's unhinged vibrato vocals and sometimes wild, sometimes delicate work on the piano, the frenzied reeds, heavy drums, and all around manic songwriting. Pure greatness! Titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "2 HB", "The Bob (Medley)", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", "Bitters End" and more.

Three Sounds — Moods ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good- .... $19.99
"Moods" is right – as the album's got a wonderfully dark undercurrent, one that makes it one of the most captivating early Three Sounds albums for Blue Note! Pianist Gene Harris leads a trio that includes Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums – and even though the set list includes a few familiar tunes, the overall pitch of the album makes the music really unique. The group play some sweet renditions of "Love For Sale" and "Green Dolphin Street", plus a great reading of Clifford Brown's "Sandu", which works very well as a piano tune. Also includes the tracks "Loose Walk" and "Tammy's Breeze".
(New York mono pressing, with RVG stamp. Vinyl has some marks that click. Cover has some wear, splitting on the bottom seam, staining along the bottom, and some marker on the back.)

Various — Time To Fly – Easy Listening From the KPM 1000 Series 1970 to 1976 ... CD
Vocalion (UK), Early 70s. New Copy .... $16.99
Soaring grooves from the legendary KPM Sound Library – a set of tunes that sparkles with all the charm and glamour of early 70s air travel! The title and cover really fit the spirit of the music here – as most of the tracks are upbeat and sky-flying – the sorts of numbers that go way beyond the sleepier side of easy listening, and really show the way that Easy maestros of the 70s were picking up plenty of funky elements in their music! There's no hard funk tracks here – as you might find on other sound library sets – but there's definitely an undercurrent of groove, thanks to some well-chosen rhythms, strong use of electric bass, and an overall sense of flow in most of the orchestrations – a feel that reminds us a lot of some of the excellent Brigade Mondaine compilations from a few years back. The package really offers up a different look than usual at KPM – and the tunes are as classy as anything we might have loved years ago, on the legendary Sound Library collections. Titles include "Sun Lover", "The Great Outdoors", "Husky Birdsong", and "Towards The Sun" by Keith Mansfield; "Holiday People", "Soft Memories", "Gentle Breeze", "Summer Dreams", "Summer Season", and "Friendly Faces" by James Clarke; "Paradise Found" by Dick Doerschuk, "Silk Stream" by David Gold, "Busy Spectacle" and "Fun In The Sun" by Neil Richardson, "Sunseekers" by David Lindup, and "A Tender Touch" by Steve Gray.

new Dizzy Gillespie — Newport Years Volume V (aka Dizzy Gillespie At Newport) ... LP
Verve, 1957. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best albums ever in Verve's classic set of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that captures the Dizzy Gillespie group of the decade in top live formation! The ensemble here is plenty hip – with a young Lee Morgan joining Dizzy on trumpet, and a host of other great players who include Melba Liston and Al Grey on trombones, Benny Golson and Billy Mitchell on saxes, and rhythm from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! Although big, the band often had the sharper groove of a small combo – and even when hitting some older moments from Gillespie's earlier years, they still kept a modern edge in their approach – thanks to arrangements by AK Salim, Tadd Dameron, Benny Golson, Quincy Jones, and Dizzy himself. Titles include "School Days", "I Remember Clifford", "Manteca", "Dizzy's Blues", "Cool Breeze", and "Doodlin".
(White label promo. Cover has some ring & edge wear, a split top seam, a dj sticker, and a bit of pen.)

new Main Ingredient — Euphrates River/Afrodisiac ... CD
RCA/Expansion (UK), 1973/1974. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two of our favorite albums by The Main Ingredient – back to back on a single CD! Euphrates River is a wonderfully complex batch of tunes that shows that the group were taking a cue from some of their hipper contemporaries, and pushing past a stock hit formula. Bert DeCoteaux was still arranging, but the group produced themselves, giving the record a sexy funky feeling in the best parts, not that dissimilar from some of Marvin Gaye's work, or records by groups like The Isley Brothers or The O'Jays. Includes great versions of two Seals & Crofts songs – "Summer Breeze" and "Euphrates" – both a perfect example of this style, as is "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" – plus a great reading of Willie Hutch's "California My Way", which has a super-dope sample at the beginning. Of course, the album still includes material like their hit " "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", a sweetly style AM radio pop hit in the band's best style of earlier years. Afrodisiac is one of the most righteous albums ever from the Main Ingredient – as you might guess from its title and stylish cover! The group are really opening up here – and show a distinct Stevie Wonder influence throughout – not just because they perform their own hip takes on a number of tunes by Stevie, but also because Wonder himself plays a bit on the record! Rhythms are inventive, and grooves nice and complex – way past standard chart soul, into a heady mix that holds up beautifully over the years. Keyboards slide in great with the harmonies – and titles include great versions of Stevie Wonder tunes "Superwoman", "Where Were You When I Needed You", "Something Lovely", "Girl Blue", and "I Am Yours" – plus the great breakbeat track "You Can Call Me Rover", which has a very tight drum sound at the beginning, and tight soul harmonies all the way through. Also features a hip take on the Isleys' "Work To Do" too!

new John Coltrane — John Coltrane In The Winner's Circle ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
Rare stuff from John Coltrane! The album features Trane playing tenor on only 4 of the album's 8 tracks – making it kind of surprising that they used his name in the title – but the album is a lesser-known batch of large group recordings that offer an interesting early chapter in his career! The main force behind the album is arranger Harry Tubbs – possibly not a name that's as sexy as John Coltrane, hence the billing – but a worthy leader for the date, given the quality of the music. Many of the other players here are small combo heroes who can also shine brightly in bigger groups – such as Donald Byrd and Art Farmer on trumpets, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, and Oscar Pettiford on bass – plus Rolf Kuhn, making an early American appearance on clarinet. Coltrane gets in some nice, but short moments on the date – but the bigger charm is the full ensemble work – on titles that include "She Didn't Say Yes", "Turtle Walk", "At Home With The Blues", "Seabreeze", and "Love & The Weather".

new Bob Downes Open Music — Mixed Bag (plus Reqiuem For Faruq Z Bey) ... CD
Openian, 1970s/1980s/2012. New Copy 2 CDs .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Two albums in one package – both of them featuring excellent work from groundbreaking British reedman Bob Downes! Mixed Bag is nothing like you might expect from its title – because while the set does feature a variety of different sessions from Downes, it's also got a very unified feel – thanks partly to the range of sounds and ideas that Bob expresses in each new tune! The set's easily some of the most compelling work we've ever heard from Downes on record – and features 70s and 80s recordings on a variety of different flutes and woodwinds – some solo, some in the company of other contemporaries, like Ray Russell on guitar and Harry Miller on bass. Most tunes are very open, and quite spiritual in their approach – and titles include "Shriek Out", "Lola", "Jamaican Jump Up", "Borneo Breeze", "Eruption", "The Devil", and "Seashore". CD 2 features a wonderful tribute to departed reedman Faruq Z Bey – written and recorded shortly after Bey's passing in 2012, and featuring Downes playing tenor and a bit of bass flute – on these beautifully poetic solo passages! The piece is relatively short – but it's a great bonus to this package.
