Giorgio Azzolini — Crucial Moment ... CD
Schema/Rearward (Italy), 1968. New Copy .... $16.99
A classic session of Italian modernist jazz – led by bassist Giorgio Azzolini, and featuring searing trumpet work by Enrico Rava! Pianist Franco D'Andrea and drummer Aldo Romano complete the group – and the tracks show a definite influence of the free jazz stylings that were sweeping Europe during the late 60s, but still keep one foot firmly planted in a swinging jazz tradition – which means that the solos have plenty of sharp edges, while the band still manages to groove nicely!. Lovingly repackaged by the Rearward label – and including the tracks "Israel", "Beyond The Corner", "Crucial Moment", and "Free Duet".

Giorgio Azzolini — Tribute To Someone ... CD
Rearward/Schema (Italy), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
A lost Italian gem from the 60s! Bassist Giorgio Azzolini was one of Italy's best players during the postwar years, and this handsome reissue brings to light one of his rarer sessions from the 60s. The record's a lyrical septet session, with Azzolini's warm round basslines right up front, and beautiful solo work by a young Gato Barbieri on tenor, Franco Ambrosetti on trumpet, and Renato Sellani on piano. The session has the warmth and sensitivity of some of Horace Silver's best early 60's Blue Note work, and the tracks include "Tribute To Someone" by Herbie Hancock, "Sometime Ago" by Sergio Mihanovic, "The Stroller" by Benny Golson, and "Hiroshima" by Gato Barbieri. Very nice stuff – and with the usual high level of Rearward packaging!

Balanco — Bossa & Balanco ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1997. New Copy .... $9.99
Mindblowing work from the early years of Schema Records – a set that really helped set a whole new tone for a generation – and which still sounds wonderful all these many hears later! Balanco work up a perfect blend of bossa rhythms and soulful jazz – all wrapped up with the kind of slinky, sexy vibe the Italian scene first perfected back in the 60s – when they were borrowing lots of Brazilian elements for their best soundtracks! Balanco's sound here really recalls those glory days – mixing together sweet female vocals, lively bossa rhythms, and great work on Fender Rhodes – all under the guidance of Nicola Conte, who manages to make everything sound beautiful together. Highlights include versions of Morricone's "Metti Una Sera A Cena" and the classic "Cinnamon & Clove" – and the vinyl version features 4 more tracks, "Balanco", "Fantasia", "Aguadream", and "Blue Skat Samba".

Andrea Balducci — Bloom ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2013. New Copy 2LP .... $18.99
One of the most soulful albums we've heard from Schema in many years – a brilliant batch of jazzy tracks from singer Andrea Balducci – served up with backing by a great lineup of players from both the Ricky Tick and Schema worlds! The core approach is jazz, but many of the songs are done with a very soulful approach – a style that's a bit like Mario Biondi, especially given Balducci's use of English throughout, and his raspy vocals – yet more 60s soul in the end, with a unified aesthetic that really holds strong over the course of the album. Players include Jukka Eskola on trumpet, Timo Lassy on tenor, Gaetano Partipilo on alto, and Luca Mannuzta on Fender Rhodes and piano – and titles include "Hurt So Bad", "Spooky", "Within Myself", "Big City", "I Just Dropped In", "Time Will Come", and "The Meaning Of Love".

Andrea Balducci — Letter/Big City ... 7-inch
Schema (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $9.99
A sweet jazzy groover from Andrea Balducci – a remake of The Box Tops' big 60s classic, but completely remade into a deeply soulful number – one that's got jazzy riffs galore, this cool bumping bottom, and deeply soulful vocals from Andrea! "Big City" is Marv Jenkins' hip classic – redone here as a jazzy stepper with sublime horns alongside the lyrics!

Charles Hilton Brown — Owed To Myself ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1974. New Copy .... $16.99
A swirling blend of soul, funk, and jazzy grooves – and a super-rare album that we've never seen in the original! Supposedly, backing on the record is by the British Afro-Funk group Assagai – which sounds right to us, because there's a nice rolling conga groove on many of the tracks. Lead vocals are by Charles Hilton Brown, in a nicely raw soul style that reminds us a bit of Otis Redding, and a bit of Mike James Kirkland on some of his early 70s material. The record features vocal covers of a number of soul hits – like "Try A Little Tenderness", "Love Train", and "Ain't No Sunshine" – plus some originals that are even better, like the funky instrumental "GRF", and the tunes "Maddox" and "Tell Me Once Again". Nice and raw, and with a sound hip enough to match the record's cover!

Cabildo's Three — Yuxtaposicion ... CD
Schema (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
Very very very cool stuff from Italy in the 70's. This tight little combo featuring Fender Rhodes, electric bass, and congas lays down some super tight grooves with a very deep, very funky, very laid back feel. Originally intended for soundtrack use in TV and commercials, this disc has finally been released to the public, and it's been worth the wait! As great as the words "Fender Rhodes", "Italy", and "congas" might suggest, and even better upon repeated listenings. Some tracks have a slightly Latin feel, while others sound like super mellow CTI grooves. Excellent stuff, and it's hardly been off our turntable this month!

Rosalia De Souza — Brasil Precisa Balancar ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy 2LP .... $15.99
The best work so far from Rosalia De Souza – a session that features production and guitar from bossa legend Roberto Menescal, and a sound that's deeper and even more classic than any of Rosalia's other work! Most of the instrumentation here is in an older acoustic mode – piano, percussion, and horns arranged by Menescal with that beautifully lighter than air style that he first pioneered in the 60s – an approach that lets Rosalia's vocals drift along on wonderfully gentle rhythms, and dominate the record even more than before. Given that the set's on Schema, there's still a nicely rhythmic component to most numbers – but overall, the record's a bold step forward even for the label – similar to the all-acoustic move made by Nicola Conte in his own recordings! Marcos Valle joins in on vocals on "Que Bandeira", and other tunes include "Onde Anda O Meu Amor", "Voz Da Lapa", "Jogo De Roda", "Rio De Janeiro", "Mar Amar", "Um Novo Dia", and "Vivo Sonhando".

Dining Rooms — Ink ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2007. Very Good 2LP .... $11.99
Another great achievement from this groovy Italian group – an album that's head and shoulders above anything they were doing just a few short years ago! The Dining Rooms deep to deepen their sound more and more with each new record – hitting a range of tones and colors that take them far beyond their initially simple rhythms, and into a space that's filled with thoughtful lyrics and sensitively-penned tunes! Most of the tracks here hit a groove that's somewhere between mid and downtempo – about half of which feature vocals by guests who include Toco, Dodo Nkishi, Sean Martin, Renaud Chaure, and George Anne Kalweit. There's a fair bit of Fender Rhodes sliding through the tunes, and some warm acoustic basslines as well – really grounding the music in a classic sort of style, even though the overall execution is fairly contemporary. Titles include "Ceremony", "Free To Grow", "Thank You", "Fatale", "Ink", "Cobra Coral", "On The Beach", "Hear Us Now", "Etage Noir (parts 1 & 2)", and "Appuntamento A Trieste".

Fragment Orchestra — Fragment Orchestra ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2002. Used .... $4.99
Sweet! The full length debut from Schema's great modern groove ensemble collects material that has been floating around for a while on separate 12-inch eps, plus previously unreleased gems – and the CD was well worth the wait! The groove here ranges from light, mellow space trip jazz, to driving latin-tinged batucada beaters, to clubbier percussion heavy tunes with lots of tonal atmosphere floating over the top! "De Muse" kicks of the set on the mellow jazzy tip, with a very slow building, soundtracky style. "Sambita" is another slow-builder, but picks up steam with a progressive, Latin beat and some really sweet chimes, synth washes, and rich electronic touches floating over the beat. "Carioca" and "Back Shop" travel at a slightly faster clip and head for the floor with pulsating, thumpy percussion, hotter Latin beats on the former and some nice jazzy snare in the latter. "Funkita (For The Dining Rooms)" has a 70s electric feel, with slappy bass and deep synth tones, but that hot programmed beat and that moody, watery pulse that travels the tune and the whole album is all modern, and all Fragment Orchestra!

Gerardo Frisina — Notebook – A Journey In Sound – The Remixes ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2007. New Copy .... $16.99
Remixes and rare tracks from the mighty Gerardo Frisina – easily our second favorite Italian groover next to the mighty Nicola Conte! The set's a great counterpart to some of Frisina's other full albums on Schema – because it not only presents a few previously unreleased tracks, it also offers up some of Gerardo's great remix work for other artists in recent years! Frisina's got a great way of imbuing a current track with a classic Latin vibe – mixing acoustic percussion, driving rhythms, and jazz-based instrumentation together with incredible sharpness and energy – a no-nonsense approach to a groove that shows that's almost a distillation of the best older elements. This approach is heard wonderfully on Gerardo's own tracks "Tokyo's Dream (07 version)", "Alborado", "Es Diferente", "Calle De Candela (vibes version)", and "Zanja" – but it also comes through on remix tracks that include "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac (G Call remix)" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Dis-ka-ndombe" by Jorge Graf, "Black Forrest Stomp" by Hipnosis, "Windly Coast" by Idea 6, "Guarapiranga" by Toco, "Stardust From Tomorrow (dissociated mood version)" by Sun Ra, and "Ghetto Stomp" by Combo Moderna.

Johnny Griffin — Griff 'N Bags ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1967/1969/1998. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99
Lost European jazz recordings from the vaults of producer Gigi Campi – and a stellar batch of non-US material with Johnny Griffin at the lead – working in the company of Clarke/Boland compatriots who include Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Idrees Sulieman, and Milt Jackson! Despite the "Bags" in the title, Milt's only on a few tracks – but that's fine with us, because Johnny Griffin is the main attraction – and the material is good small group sides with Griff soloing and trading lines with players like Sulieman and Bailey, or with some of the other players on their own. The recordings are different than the usual breed of Johnny Griffin European recordings – most of which have him soloing with a piano quartet on extended tracks. On this release, most of the tracks are short, hard, and very nicely swinging with a good hard bop groove – as with the best of Griffin's Riverside and Blue Note recordings. Kenny Clarke's on drums on nearly all the material, and he pulls out his bop chops to drive Griff's hard solos as fast as he can. The set's a great batch of work, with excellent notes and photos, and some great playing all around. Cuts include "Gamal Sady 'n Em", "Foot Patting", "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz", "Blues For K", "Muvaffak's Pad", "The Girl & The Turk", and "Gyson's Bag". 16 cuts in all, and none of them are from the Griffin/Davis LP on MPS (just in case you thought to ask!)

Timo Lassy — In With Lassy ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $19.99
The sound of Ricky Tick hits Schema Records – with a whole new groove in the process! Tenorist Timo Lassy has won our ears strongly with his previous records for Finnish label Ricky Tick – hardbop groovers that are filled with soul and life, and lots of spontaneous live jazz playing. This smoking Schema records set has all that same sort of energy – but shifts the groove slightly from hardbop to more of a mod sort of style – thanks to use of Wurlitzer electric piano in the combo, which helps bring along a jaunty approach to the rhythms! The vibe's a bit like an Atlantic Records soul jazz set from the late 60s – like work by David Newman or Hank Crawford – and Timo's tenor is in great company alongside the electric keys, acoustic bass, drums, and percussion. Titles include "Touch Red", "Teddy The Sweeper", "Creole Stew", "It Could Be Better", "Uncle Harry Came To Town", and "Shootin Dice".

Timo Lassy — Teddy The Sweeper/Where's The Man ... 7-inch
Schema (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $9.99
Jazzy grooves from reedman Timo Lassy – a 45 that almost feels more like a vintage European jazz EP! "Teddy The Sweeper" features full-on tenor, blown with some of Timo's most angular modes to date – over wickedly tight drum work and a bit of percussion! "Where's The Man" is great too – a smoker with a 60s soul jazz vibe – and some great electric piano in the rhythms!

Gaetano Partipilo — Besides – Songs From The Sixties ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2013. New Copy .... $19.99
Just a few of the songs here are from the 60s, and many of the rest are written by Gaetano Partipilo himself – and mixed with a few Brazilian numbers as well – all to round out a wonderfully rich sounding album that really lives up to the best Schema tradition! Instrumentation is mostly live jazz – played by Gaetano on alto sax, as well as Nicola Conte on guitar, Pietro Lusso on Fender Rhodes, Pasquale Bardaro on vibes, and Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet – but maybe best of all are the vocals, which shift a bit over the course of the record, and include raspy soul lines from MR Natural, and warmer female vocals from Alice Ricciardi, Heidi Vogel, and Rosalia De Souza. Half the tracks are instrumentals, and the mix of modes really makes the album great – never settled too far into one comfortable corner, and really taking the listener on a great journey overall! Titles include "Essa Mulher", "Se Voce Pensa", "Beyond The Days", "Jive Samba", "Right Now", "13 Death March", "Wall & Water", "Atras Da Porta", "The Sticks", "Moon Flower", and "Ocean Dance".

Franco Tonani — Night In Fonorama (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Schema/Rearward (Italy), 1964. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99
One of the best of the Schema/Rearward reissues of lost Italian jazz – and a sparkling session that features the work of a young Gato Barbieri, plus trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti, pianist Franco D'Andrea, and bassist Giovanni Tommaso. Drummer Franco Tonani leads the session – but the best work is by Ambrosetti, who's got a lot of Miles Davis in his horn at this point, and by D'Andrea, who's warm and lyrical, with none of the self-indulgence of later years. Barbieri lacks the fire of his great recordings, but his tenor's also nice and strong – and he adds some of the rougher edges to the session, in a nice counterpoint to Ambrosetti's sweeter horn. Titles include "Solar", "Vamos", "U Boat", "Drum Ding", and "Hard Mode", done in 2 takes. Great package, with a nice cover, and excellent attention to good sound!

Ukitusa Quintet with Cleveland Watkiss — Ukitusa Quintet ... CD
Schema/Rearward (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99
An amazing collaboration between musicians from three different nations – recorded high in the mountains in Northern Italy – with an equally majestic sound to match! The album's especially noteworthy for being a great space for vocalist Cleveland Watkiss to really rediscover the jazz-based side of his talents – using his voice like an instrument, in ways we haven't always heard since his initial years of promise – and really impressing us with a new sort of righteous range and spiritual depth! Most of Watkiss' vocals are wordless, and flow beautifully amongst the piano from Antonio Figura, bass from Milko Ambrogini, drums from Ettore Fioravanti, and guitars from William Lenihan. The overall sound is mostly acoustic, without any of the processing from other recent Watkiss projects – and the tunes are all originals by the group, with a mix of slow modal grooves and open searching styles. Titles include "Synastry", "Modus", "Dear Mr Kuhn", "Innocenza Ritrovata", "Fiume Di Gennaio", "When The Dust Settles", and "My Little Effe".

Various — Break N' Bossa ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1999. New Copy 2LP .... $16.99
The start of a legend – and a key compilation to document the rich reworkings of Brazilian sounds in the 90s global scene! The collection is the first in the legendary series – and has a wider range than some of the others – as Schema moves past just their own recordings, and incorporates some key sounds from other labels as well – a number of which are now out of print. Given that most numbers here – at least these mixes – were only around on 12" singles, the collection is especially essential – and filled with gems that stand up well – and really set the blueprint for grooves in years to come! Titles include "Atabaque" by Jazzanova, "Servus Mr. Bond" by Les Gammas, "Outboard Jeopardy" by Modaji, "What's Your Number" by Ian Pooley (remixed by Jazzanova), "The Will Of Life" by DJ Matsuoka, and "Galacia" by Rainer Truby Trio.

Various — Metti Una Bossa A Cena Vol 2 ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP .... $18.99
Sublime bossa groovers from Italy! The first volume of this series was one of our favorite compilations that year it was released – and this second volume is equally as great! Schema groover Gerardo Frisina serves up a hand-picked batch of 16 tunes, mostly classic numbers from the late 60s and early 70s, pulled from the ranks of Italian soundtrack, jazz, and easy listening albums – all with a flair for making the bossa even groovier than it already is! Electric keyboards abound – and the rhythms run from dreamy to driving to slightly funky, always at the right pace for the material, and always making the set dance with delight! Titles include "Incontro All'Aereoporto" by Piero Piccioni, "Allora, Il Treno" by Bruno Nicolai & Edda Dell'Orso, "Avances" by Gerardo Frisina, "Wind" by Red Redford Sound System One, "Bossalonga" by Mustang, "Unreality Landscape" by Angel Pocho Gatti, "Susan Theme" by Daniele Patucchi, "Per Lei" by Stefano Torossi, and "Colpa Tua" by Giancarlo Gazzani.

new Fabrizio Bosso & Javier Girotto Latin Mood — Vamos ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
A sparkling set of Latin jazz, done the Schema way – which means that the team of Favrizio Bosso and Javier Girotto are even tighter than on their previous release for Blue Note! The best tracks here bristle with an upbeat sense of rhythm that's undeniable – grooves that roll out beautifully from the sextet, spurred on with unified energy that's way more than the usual Latin style – very unique, and wonderfully groovy! Bosso's trumpet is as top-shelf as always, a great solo vehicle for the group – and Girotto plays both soprano and baritone sax with a deft touch – alongside drums from Lorenzo Tucci, plus keyboards, bass, and percussion too – all live instrumentation that puts this one more firmly on the jazz side of the Schema spectrum. Titles include "Sophia", "Vamos", "Waltz Del Clavel", "Algo Contigo", "El Mastropiero", "Mathias", "Africa Es", and a surprisingly great version of "In A Sentimental Mood".

new Nicola Conte — Jet Sounds (full LP) ... LP
Schema/Fez (Italy), 2000. New Copy 2LP .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Wonderful wonderful wonderful – and one of the best albums we've ever heard of modern bossa and soundtrack grooves! For years, Nicola Conte has been a seminal force in the new Italian scene – working as a DJ, promoter, producer, and sometimes recording artist under the odd 12" single. This album marks his first full effort – and after years of bubbling under in the Italian scene, Nicola emerges as one of the most perfect-formed artists we've heard in years. The whole album's a breathtaking mix of 60s bossa, soundtrack, and easy themes – put together with never a dull moment, and always a focus on the kind of mid and uptempo grooves that have been pushing the Italian and German scenes for the last 5 years. The record features great mixes from a few of Nicola's 12" singles, plus a wealth of excellent new material that really expands his groove wonderfully – with a totally real, totally honest sound that pushes past the gazillion retro remix throwaway albums that you'll find stuffing the listening stations at the megastores! Tracks include "Il Cerchio Rosso", "Dossier Omega", "Trappola Mortale", "Jazz Pour Dadine", and "Bossa Per Due".

The genius of Nicola Conte gets the remix treatment – in this wonderful new album that steps off heavily from his massive Jet Sounds set of a few years ago! If you know know Nicola, he's the wunderkind behind the Schema label – and, probably more than anyone in the world right now, one of the few producer/musicians who can really handle a retro-sounding groove. This double 10" package is totally cool – with a total of 5 tracks from the full LP, laid out over double DJ-friendly vinyl. new Nicola Conte — Other Directions ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2004. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Nicola Conte – Schema records maestro making his Blue Note debut with this set – and giving the label one of their best new albums of the 21st Century! The record's quite different than Nicola's programmed dancefloor work for Schema – and is much more of an organic jazz-based session – with instrumentation by a wide arrangement of hip European jazzers (including Till Bronner and Rosario Giuliani!), plus sweet vocals from a variety of different singers! The groove is still very much in the Conte/Schema spirit – often in a loping modal approach to jazz, with a strong inspiration from the best European scenes of the late 60s and early 70s. The sound is wonderful – with players from the larger lineup playing in differing groups from track to track – showcasing instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trombone, tenor, alto, and even a bit of guitar from Nicola himself. Vocalists include Bembe Segue, Lucia Minetti, Cristina Zavalloni, and Till Bronner – and titles include "Sea & Sand", "Nefertiti", "Wanin Moon", "A Time For Spring", "Kind Of Sunshine", "Aphrodite's Dream", "The Dharma Bums", "All Gone", "Le Depart", and "Several Shades Of Dawn". new Nicola Conte — Rituals ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2008. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A sublime album through and through – and another essential slice of work from the legendary Nicola Conte! Conte's only given us a few full length sets under his own name, but they've all been amazing, and this album's no exception – a record that mostly features live jazz instrumentation, turned towards some of the groove-heavy modes that Conte forged from his earliest sides on Schema Records – a style that was clubjazz before anyone was using that tag, but which also has done plenty to revive a huge range of classic modes from decades past! The record's got echoes of bossa, modal jazz, and more – served up by combos with players that include Timo Lassy on sax and flute, Fabrizio Bosso and Till Bronner on trumpets, Pietro Lussu on piano, and Conte himself on guitar. Vocals are by Alice Ricciardi, Jose James, Chiara Civello, and Kim Sanders – and the album's got an even deeper feel than Conte's previous album on Blue Note. Tracks include "Karma Flower", "I See All Shades Of You", "Black Is The Graceful Veil", "Caravan", "Rituals", "Macedonia", "The Nubian Queens", and "Like Leaves In The Wind".

new Rosalia De Souza — D'Improvviso ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Beautiful bossa from Rosalia De Souza – and a set that's got a sweet little difference from some of her earlier Schema albums! This time around, the sound is warmly acoustic throughout – very jazz-based, and wrapped around Rosalia's vocals wonderfully – sometimes with a groove that's right in club jazz territory, other times with a mellower vibe that really fits the bossa spirit of the material! De Souza's vocals somehow sound even more beautiful in this setting – with soulful jazz inflections, and a maturity we might not have heard before – and the great trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso adds his talents to the core group for the session, working alongside tenor, trombone, piano, and lots of live percussion. Toco duets with Rosalia on a few tracks, and titles include "Banzo", "Candomble", "D'Improvviso", "Carolina Carol Bela", "Sambinha", "5 Dias De Carnaval", "Luiza Manequim", "Amanha", "Bossa 50", and "Samba Longe".

new Dining Rooms — Ink ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2007. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Titles include "Ceremony", "Free To Grow", "Thank You", "Fatale", "Ink", "Cobra Coral", "On The Beach", "Hear Us Now", "Etage Noir (parts 1 & 2)", and "Appuntamento A Trieste".

new Dining Rooms — Tre ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2003. New Copy .... $8.99 16.98 Out Of Stock
The 3rd album by The Dining Rooms (in case you couldn't guess by the title!) – and the best so far! These guys have really matured from earlier outings – moving into a sophisticated realm of downtempo soundscapes crafted with a great deal of care, and which are put together with a lot more than simple tricks and gimmicks. There's loads of really solid tunes in here – sly numbers that sneak up on you with a subtle approach to the craft, gently burrowing in and taking root – somehow making the album that much more compelling overall. A number of tracks have some wonderfully languid vocals, some male and some female – and these tunes fall nicely next to instrumental numbers with a very evocative approach. Titles include "Anima Per Amarti", "Tunnel", "La Citta Nuda", "Fluxus", "Flamenco Sketches", "Dreamy Smiles", "You", "African Loungesters", and a nice cover of Sun Ra's "Astro Black"!

new Gerardo Frisina — Join The Dance ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2010. New Copy 2LP .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Modal brilliance from Gerardo Frisina – possibly his greatest album ever, and a set that really shows his true transformation into a jazzman! The set's got a wide range of acoustic jazz instrumentation played live, and features none of the rhythm programs you might get on earlier Frisina records – a shift that has him moving in the same classic jazz space as labelmate Nicola Conte! As with Conte's recent records, there's a warmth and soul here that's undeniable – a feel that wraps up 50s Blue Note, 60s Italian jazz, and 70s MPS with ease – delivering something new and fresh for a younger generation in the process. Core instrumentation includes vibes, piano, tenor, flute, and trombone – and the set features guest vocals by Norma Winstone on one track, and Francesca Sortino on another. All other titles are instrumental, and tunes include "Titoro", "Joy Shout", "Will You Walk A Little Faster", "Tata Somba", "Mille E Una Notte", "High Hat", "Bubbly", and "Another Waltz".

new Johnny Griffin — Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $18.99 Out Of Stock
One of the rarest Johnny Griffin albums ever – a set recorded as a side project when Griff was working with the Clarke Boland Big Band – in a lineup that features some of the best members from that great ensemble! The style's a bit more laidback and soulful than other CBBB projects – more in the mode of Johnny's roots in Chicago during the 50s, but still inflected with some of the sharper touches he picked up during his 60s years in Europe. Other players here are all wonderful – and include Benny Bailey on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and both Kenny Clarke and Kenny Clare on drums – seemingly playing together on some tracks, which creates a nicely skittish rhythm in the set! Titles include "The Turk's Bolero", "Deep Eight", "A Handful Of Soul", "Foot Patting", and "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz".
(Please note that the LP has two Side 1 labels on it but the records fine.)

new Gaetano Partipilo — Besides – Songs From The Sixties ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2013. New Copy 2LP .... $18.99 Out Of Stock

Schema/Rearward (Italy), 1966. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
Sublime work from saxophonist Eraldo Volonte – a rare mid 60s session recorded in Italy, and totally hip work all the way through! Volonte's got a tone here that's really tremendous – clearly Coltrane-influenced, especially on the tenor selections – but also stretching out with its own feeling too, especially on some of the album's more outside numbers, which feature Eraldo playing some great lines on soprano sax. There's a very open quality to the record – not exactly free jazz, but almost a "new thing" sense of sonic exploration – one that has Volonte's tenor and soprano sax aligned nicely with trombone from Dino Piana, piano from Franco D'Andrea, bass from Giovanni Tommaso, and drums from Franco Tonani. Titles include "Flamingo", "Mr Arpo", "Eclypso", "Tale", "Explorable", and "Ornette".

The 5th volume in this great series is bigger than ever! Back when volume 1 first came out, the idea of modern bossa dancefloor tunes was a strange concept – now, thanks to the work of the Schema crew, in releases like this one, the groove is here to stay – and strongly! The set offers a 13 track overview of the best of recent years – mostly groups from Europe, and all firmly in the Schema Records style. Most tunes are remixed versions, and titles include "Mastered The Art (Jet Sounds rmx)" by Greyboy, "On Line" by Marcos Valle, "O Preguicoso" by Intuit, "Salsin" by Amalgamation Of Soundz, "Penso Ascoltando" by Mondomo, "Meu Samba (Nicola Conte's bossa ahead rmx)" by Eli Goulart & Banda Do Mato, "Puutarhassa (Milk Snickars ext version)" by Pekka Streng, "Good Morning As Usual (Senor Coconut rmx)" by Snooze, "Existentialism (Milano bossa mix)" by The Dining Rooms, "In The Mood For Bossa (alt)" by S-Tone Inc, "Dance Naked Under Palmtrees" by Mo Horizons, and "Honesty" by Soulstance. new Various — Metti Una Bossa A Cena ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2000. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of rare bossa material from Italy! The set's one of the best we've ever seen of this type, and it's a completely fresh batch of tunes that breaks past a lot of the other Italian compilations of recent years. Some of the artists are familiar names – like Morricone, Piccioni, and Trovajoli – but there's plenty of other artists that we've never even heard before! A few themes are reworkings of familiar soundtrack tunes, but most of the material is original – and done with a sparkling sound that's really great! The grooves are filled with loads of tight drums, bubbling organ, jangly piano, and sweet female vocals in sort of a Morricone-ish tradition. Great stuff, and with 20 excellent tracks that include "Amori Finiti" by Giancarlo Gazzani, "Relief" by The Black Fire, "Rossana" by Armando Trovajoli, "Sometime" by A Santisteban, "Tema Di Linda" by Franco Micalizzi, "Curriculum" by Franco Chiari, "Coronado 990" by Orchestra Henry Stone, "Meditation" by Romano Mussolini, and "Warm Blood" by Tullio Gallo.

Electric keyboards abound – and the rhythms run from dreamy to driving to slightly funky, always at the right pace for the material, and always making the set dance with delight! new Various — Modern Sounds From Italy 2 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy .... $10.99 Out Of Stock
A low price, but a really great package – one that's overflowing with some of the best recent work from the mighty Schema Records! If you read these pages at all, you'll know we think that Schema's one of the greatest things going these days – a modern label, but one that's committed to the real jazz grooves of earlier years – the bossa, modal, and soul jazz styles of the 60s and 70s – played in a mixture of real instrumentation and just a bit of dancefloor production, with a sound that's instant classic on nearly every release! This package is a great introduction to the Schema label's genius, and even if you've got some of the tracks here on other releases, the set is a really great way to hear all this music in one place – kind of a "best of the best" that's totally great! Titles include "Bluesanova" by Gerardo Frisina, "Moon Vision" by Soulstance, "I knew The Way" by Invisible Session, "On A Clear Day" by Was A Bee, "Emotional Dancing" by S-Tone, "Stay (In Mood)" by Paolo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi, "Afrolicious" by Dining Rooms, "Esquema Da Bossa" by Quintetto X, "Today's Sound" by Intensive Jazz Sextet, and "Dreaming Of The Past" by Rosario Giuliani Quartetto.

new Various — Modern Sounds From Italy 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A rich document of the growth in the Italian jazz scene in recent years – a great leap forward not just for individual musicians, but also for the Schema label as well! Schema first began in the 90s with a relatively programmed approach to jazz – a style that loved the classics, but often reworked them in modern production modes. Yet over the years, the company's really come to be a key home for real jazz and soulful sounds – moving past their original remix identity, to a point where they're arguably one of the most important jazz labels on the European scene! This nicely-priced batch of tracks is a great illustration of that growth – and features a few old Schema faves, mixed with newer artists who've flocked to the label in recent years – presented here in some unique remixes and other nice versions we haven't heard before. Titles include "Beyond The Days" by Gaetano Partiplio, "But Not For You" by Alessandro Maganini, "Hurt Me Bad" by Andrea Balducci, "Waltz For Emily" by Gerardo Frisina, "Banzo" by Rosalia De Souza, "Some Kind Of Blues (Grooveman Spot rmx)" by S-Tone Inc, "Welcome To My World (acoustic)" by Joyce Elaine Yuille, "Hear Us Now" by Christian Prommer's Drumlesson, "Alta Tensione 3am" by Alex Puddu, and "Good Life" by Timo Lassy.

Schema (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A legendary set of sound library grooves – and actually one of the first to kick off the genre! The package brings together rare tracks from the small Italian Octopus label – not nearly as well-known as De Wolfe, KPM, or other sound library giants – but an equally great source of rare funky jazz cuts that were never issued to the public at the time – recorded as part of the huge wave of studio activity in Italy during the 60s and 70s! Given that the set was collected by Schema, you can bet that the tracks are right on the money – and titles include "Curly" by Stellio Subelli, "Sculturea Beat" by Angelo Baroncini, "Diacromeico" by Sandro Brugnolini, "Games" by Pasquale Castiglione, "First Black" by Mario Molino, "Maze" by Roberto Conrado, and "Verso L'Infinito" by Alessandro Alessondroni.

new Various — Up! The Psycho Mellow – A Brief Excursion Into The 70's Sound ... CD
Schema (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
Stunning compilation of Italian grooves from the early 70's – and one that has a slightly different twist than some of the other one's we've been stocking. The folks at Schema have put this one together, and the set's got a feel that's similar to some of the newer releases they've been working on over the past few years. The grooves are funky, yes, but they also have a light and airy sound, with lots of groovy bossa tinges, cool vocal parts, and the kind of smooth Italian feel that you'd never find on American records from the time. The tracks are played by groups like Expo 80, The Paris Studio Group, The Psycheground Group, The Black Fire, and The Hawksworth Big Band and String. Most of the tracks are breezy and groovy, with a sound that's similar to some of the best stuff on the Sound Gallery compilation – and different than the other funky Italian grooves we've been stocking! Nice one.

new Mario Biondi & The High Five Quintet — Handful Of Soul ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
An incredible full length debut from vocalist Mario Biondi – a jazz singer we'd rank right up there with the legendary Mark Murphy – supported here with great backings from the High Five Quintet! The grooves here are in a soaring, tightly-stepping style – very much the best club jazz mode of the contemporary European scene – with all-acoustic instrumentation, and rhythms that move along at a really great dancefloor pace! Mario's vocals are really unique too – with a little rasp that catches slightly, and really brings a timeless quality to his voice – mixing personal feeling into the lively numbers on the album, with an unexpected depth that really makes the album stand out from similar sessions of this type! There's echoes of hip vocal jazz work from years past by artists like The Peddlers, Bobby Cole, or Mark Murphy – and titles include "A Child Runs Free", "No Mercy For Me", "This Is What You Are", "I Can't Keep From Cryin Sometimes", "Rio De Janeiro Blue", "Handful Of Soul", "On A Clear Day", "Never Die", "No Trouble On The Mountain", "Slow Hot Wind", and "Gig".

Schema (Italy), 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A swirling blend of soul, funk, and jazzy grooves – and a super-rare album that we've never seen in the original! Supposedly, backing on the record is by the British Afro Funk group Assagai – which sounds right to us, because there's a nice rolling conga groove on many of the tracks.

One of the more obscure reissues to come out on the great Rearward imprint – but an excellent lost session of piano jazz, recorded in Milan in 1969! Pianist Oscar Rocchi has a sweet soulful approach to the piano, with a tone that's almost slightly funky at times – partly in reflection to the strong bass work by Cornelio Dattoli, and tight drumming by Gianni Cazzola. The record almost reminds us of some of the excellent 70s Japanese trio recordings by American pianists – and the whole set has a nice warm quality that you wouldn't expect from a record titled Abstraction! Includes a version of Edu Lobo's "Cancao Do Amanhecer", plus "FBM Blues", "Moment Of Joy", "Ivory Isle", and "Remember Coltrane".

new Nicola Conte & Others — Modern Sound Of Nicola Conte – Versions In Jazz-Dub ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A long-overdue collection of all the mixes, side-projects, and rare "Nicola Conte version" tracks that have cropped up in the past decade or so – work that's every bit as great as the material Conte includes on his own albums and singles! Nicola Conte's not a remixer – he's a re-imaginer – and when he sets out to serve up his own version of a track, he often starts from scratch – using his own band, his own arrangements, and his own key elements – all of which turn any projects for other artists into grooves that are very Conte-directed – the kind of classic jazz-infused gems that Nicola's been laying down on his own Schema Records label for over a decade! This double-disc set is filled with amazing work that Conte's done for other folks – and it also include a few rare and unreleased tracks under his own name as well – a massive helping of music that's really mindblowing throughout – sure to please any fan of Nicola, as well as anyone who digs the artists included in the package. Nicola Conte tracks include "Castles In The Rain", "Charade", "New Blues", "When I Wish Upon A Star", "Solo", "Black Is The Graceful Veil (acoustic version)", "Groovy Samba", and "All Or Nothing At All", which features vocals by Jose James! new Jazz Convention — Up Up With The Jazz Convention ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1997. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from the early years of Schema Records – a straight jazz set that crackles with classic modal energy! The group's really a great one – and features some tremendous trumpet from Fabrizio Bosso – plus trombone from Gianluca Petrella, piano from Stefano Bollani, and saxes from Gaetano Partipilo – mostly all players who've really gone on to make a name for themselves after this set! There's a really classic feel here – somewhere between the Italian jazz of the Basso/Valdambrini group, and some of the best hardbop on Saba/MPS. The group falls into none of the cliches that you might expect – quite a surprise at the mid 90s time of the session, but a bit more common in today's club jazz era – and the production here is wonderful too, just right for the 60s feel of the record. Titles include "Mr. Kenyatta", "Argento D'Africa", "Unit 7", "Mira", and "Modal Convention".

new Timo Lassy — In With Lassy ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Classic-styled funk from Alex Puddu – not only the greatest record we've heard from him so far, but a set that's definitely worthy of its "golden age" claim in the title! Pretty great work from the team of Lorenzo Tucci and Lucxa Mannutza – two artists we normally associate with much straighter jazz material, but who really take off here together! The format is still definitely jazz, but the energy is quite free a times – just drums and effects from Tucci, and shifting piano, Fender Rhodes, and Hammond from Luca Mannutza – played in these really flowing lines that sparkle amidst Lorenzo's energy on the drums – all in ways that are inside enough to swing, but in ways that really go beyond conventional jazz! The format is a wonderful development for both players – and really helps us appreciate their rich talents even more than before – hardly a trick or gimmick, and instead a compelling collaboration that almost makes us feel like ECM has collided with Schema Records. Titles include "Jet Lag", "Jungle & Space", "Lunar", "Moon Boots", "The Voyager", "Avaria", and "Inception".

Both tracks sparkle with the kind of retro-jazzy intensity that we've come to expect after Conte's brilliant Jet Sounds LP – a perfect blend of classic bossa grooves and modern dancefloor production, in a mode that blows away all the competition! "New Standards" has a strong bassy bossa beat – with a warmly lyrical trumpet solo over the top, sweet soulful, and very well played! "Tema Per Hi-Fi" has some great vibes and piano – grooving away in a mode that feels like it was lifted from some classic Quincy Jones soundtrack on Mercury!

There's still some of the old school jazz in the mix that we love from Mario's Schema work – but the album's also got a fuller production style at times, one that really expands the palette of Biondi's colors, and which has him working here with help from key guests who include Omar, Leon Ware, Al Jarreau, Incognito, and Chaka Khan – and even a bit of organ from the James Taylor Quartet! As you might imagine, we're huge fans of any artist with Dusty in their name – but these guys have a really special sound we've been digging since their start! The record may well be the best we've heard so far from this cool German project – one rooted in the core contributions of Christoph Doepke, but which features loads of live guest instrumentation to really flesh out the sound – taking things into territory that includes a bit of Afro Funk, jazzy fusion, and Neo Soul – a nice sense of variety, but all without ever making the album sound too scattered or all over the map! Instead, Dusty has a great way of doing everything just the right way – with a solid vibe that almost takes us back to the best years of the Schema or Compost labels. Titles include "Mood Matters", "Danse Macabre", "Seventy Three", "Longing Lingers", "Cultura", "Mozafrique", "Colors Per Minute", and "Under The Same Drum".

Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova — Musica Su Schemi ... CD
Cramps (Italy), 1976. New Copy .... $13.99
A classic 70s outing from The Gruppo Di Improvisazione – historically important Italian avant collective, similar to AMM or MEV – with a really groundbreaking approach to their sound! We say "sound" here instead of "music" – because the album's filled with dark textures and subtle instrumental touches – more sonic than melodic at most moments, and used in really stark, spare ways. Ennio Morricone's featured on some bracing trumpet lines – and other members include Egisto Macchi on percussion, and Giancarlo Schiaffini on trombone. Titles include "Schema 1, 2, 3" and "Ommagio A Giancinto Scelsi".

Idea 6 — Steppin Out (CD & PAL format DVD) ... CD
Deja Vu (Italy), 2007. New Copy CD & DVD .... $13.99 14.98
A beautiful second album from Idea 6 – the cool Italian combo who first blew our minds with their excellent Metropoli set! The style here is similar to that great album – a recasting of older Italian jazz modes from the 60s – the mix of hardbop and modalism that flourished during some of that scene's best postwar years, served up here in a mix of younger and older players with a great degree of sensitivity for each other. The album's produced by maestro Paolo Scotti – and has all the care for classic touches as his other great projects in recent years – and the lineup features Gianni Basso on tenor, Guido Pistocchi on trumpet, Dino Piana on valve trombone, and Andrea Pozza on piano. Guests include Francesca Sortino on vocals and Anibale Modoni on vibes – both of whom bring in a slight bit of Schema energy – and titles include "OM Blues", "Tempura 4/4", "Junior Is Back", "Dance Of The Crickets", "Mr GB", "Tune Up", and "Bell's". Includes a bonus DVD too – with an intro and interview with the group – plus videos of the tunes "Tune UP", "Mr GB", and "Bell's".
(DVD is PAL, Region 0.)

Magnetic 4 — Boa Vida – The Spirit Of Nu Bossa Nova Sound ... CD
Cinedelic (Italy), 2009. New Copy .... $14.99
Sweet grooves from this hip Italian combo – a group with a name that reminds us of some of our favorite sound library ensembles from years back, and a musical style to match! Magnetic 4 are heavy on 60s bossa and modal styles – jazzy in the instrumentation, but often set to dancefloor rhythms too – a bit in the mode we first came to love during the early years of the Schema Records label – no surprise, really, given that Magnetic 4 also hail from the same Italian scene! The bossa rhythms are especially nice, and really warm things up – and although there's vocals on a few tracks, the main vibe is instrumental – heavy on Fender Rhodes and other keyboards, plus a bit of vibes as well. Titles include "Sushi Run", "Ocean 99", "The King Of Swing", "Boa Vida", "Vertigo Bossa", "Bebogaloo", "Chilly On The Rocks", and "Afro Sex Sound Machine".

Milano Jazz Dance Combo — Milano Jazz Dance Combo ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2008. New Copy .... $16.99
Sweet jazzy grooves from this hip Italian duo – Enzo & Gianni Lo Greco, who've also recorded as Quintetto Lo Greco for Schema Records! The sound here is definitely in a Schema groove – lots of jazzy instrumentation on piano, sax, trumpet, and trombone – very much in the best 60s Italian jazz mode, but kicked up just a bit with some rhythms aimed at the dancefloor – never too over the top, and all acoustic all the way through – a club jazz groove that's perfect for anyone who also digs work on labels like DejaVu or Ricky Tick! There's a bit of vocals on the record – sung by guests Alice Ricciardi, Felix, Katharine Ruestow, Roxie Ray, and Dionne Charles – and titles include "Sam Blues", "Feelin Good", "Don't Cry", "Much More", "Broken Rose", "Iperbole", "Please Don't Go", "Sweet Love", "Changes", and "Goodbye".

Fabio Nobile — Always Love ... CD
Deja Vu (Italy), 2008. Used .... $9.99
A killer full-length set from Fabio Nobile – an artist who's been making hip singles for a number of years, but who really sparkles in the space of an extended album! Fabio's groove is always warm and jazzy – a bit like some of the best moments from Italian contemporaries on Schema Records, but also touched with a wider range of influences too – Brazilian jazz, 70s fusion, and sunny vocal modes that really make the music shine! Instrumentation is often a mix of programmed rhythms and acoustic jazz elements – again, very much in a Schema mode – and there's a range of great vocalists on the record, wonderful singers who include Agata Leanza, Lorraine Bowen, Rosella Key, Lehan Gyn, and Tanya Michelle – each of whom has their own special touch for the tunes. Great stuff throughout – lively, positive, and a real delight – with titles that include "Day What A Day", "Zozoi", "Fly To The Moon", "Love Is Gone", "San Diego", "Always Love", "Didn't You Know", "D'Improvviso", "O Samba", "Back With You", and "Toto Mi Amor". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Always Love (Sunaga T Experience rmx)" and "Didn't You Know (Gerardo Frisina main mix)".

Cinedelic (Italy), 2009. New Copy .... $7.99
Cool cuts compiled for the Carducci 76 club in Italy – put together from Cinedelic label offerings, and a few Schema Records bits as well! There's a great vibe running through the material – contemporary recordings, but with echoes of 60s jazz and Latin, all wrapped up in a handsome Carducci-styled package! Titles include "So What" by Jojo Effect, "Love Is In Town" by Brenda Boykin, "Cioccalatino" by Mossuto, "Love Me Till Sunday" by Nicola Conte, "Cats N Girl" by Club Des Belugas, "Sophisticated Samba" by Gerardo Frisina, "Rosegota" by Fabio Orsini, and "Cancun" by Tape Five.

Various — Hammock House – Eastbound L ... LP
Fania, 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $12.99 14.99
Classic Latin, beautifully remixed – as a host of Fania Records gems are given a fresh twist by Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, Gilles Peterson, and others! The package is way more than you might expect – not clunky remixes of Latin styles, but some beautiful numbers that really expand the warmth and spontaneous energy of the originals – mostly keeping a strong 70s vibe intact, and approaching the project with a really loving feel overall! In fact, the sound is almost as if Schema got their hands on Fania – since there's echoes here of some of the updated Latin modes you'd find on that label too. Vinyl version features four of the best long mixes from the CD – including "Saona (Gilles Peterson & Simbad rmx)" by Noro Morales, "Siembra (Joe Claussell rmx)" by Ruben Blades, "Mi Gente (Louie Vega eol rmx)" by Hector Lavoe, and "Take Five (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Roberto Roena.

Various — Jazzflora – Scandinavian Aspects Of Jazz ... CD
Dealers Of Nordic Music (Sweden), 2004. Used .... $4.99
In case you haven't noticed lately, the Scandinavian scene's blowing up large – and for good reason! As this set nicely documents, there's a rich array of great groups up north – groundbreaking combos with one ear towards the jazzy riffs of 70s European jazz – bringing more life and light into their work than previous Scandinavian electronicists – and creating tracks that are especially appealing to our classics-steeped ears! The feel here is tremendous – with a classic/modern counterpoint that rivals the best on Compost or Schema – and which has the added influence of decades of Scandinavian fusion, funk, modal jazz, and vocalese! Titles include "Trading Eights" by Five Corners Quintet, "Marinade" by Kahuun, "Noisuf (raw jazz take)" by Stockholm Cyclo, "Open The Door" by Elsa, "I Love You My Friends" by Hird, "Kovin Lentaen Kotin Kaipaan" by Kuusumun Profeetta, "Good & Bad" by Povo, "Logic Of Space" by Iony, and "Bloodstream" by Oddjob.

Mario Biondi — Sun ... CD
2013. New Copy .... Around June 4, 2013
The sun shines brightly on Mario Biondi – really making this record sparkle with a charm that goes way beyond Mario's previous albums – a quality that's less retro than before, and which shows Biondi as a growing soul star with really universal appeal! Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick helped co-write a good number of tracks on the set – and titles include "Shine On", "Come To Me", "Woman Woman", "What Have You Done To Me", "Never Stop", "La Voglia La Pazzia L'Idea", "Girl Blue", "Light To The World", and "Catch The Sunrise". CD has a great package – hardcover book-style, with pages inside!

new Sergio Mendes — Bom Tempo Brasil – Sergio Mendes Remixed ... CD
Concord, 2010. New Copy .... $3.99 18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Remixed cuts from Sergio Mendes' Bom Tempo album – a record that's already pretty strongly pointed at the dancefloor, making it a perfect fit for a project like this! Many of the tracks here are very heavily remixed – using only key hooks and vocal elements from the originals, much in the style of the Verve Remixed series – although a few of our favorite mixes here keep more of the core flavor intact, or even bring something new and rich to the table. Perhaps the best cut in this way, is the great Nicola Conte Zona Sul Version of "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce" – which is a warm bossa number that could almost come from Conte's own Schema Records. The set also features some remixes of cuts that weren't even on the original Bom Tempo record – and tracks include "Pais Tropical (Roger Sanchez release yourself mix)", "Magalenha (Moto Bianco rmx)", "Orpheus (Funk Generation mix)", "Ye Me Le (Chuckle rmx)", "Maracatu Atomico (Paul Oakenfold club mix)", "You & I (Cutmore rmx)", "Mas Que Nada (Nervo rmx)", and "The Real Thing (Bimbo Jones rmx)".

new Mario Biondi — Due ... CD
Tattica (Italy), 2011. New Copy 2CD .... $26.99 Out Of Stock
A double-length set from Mario Biondi – and a record that really shows him growing a lot as a singer! Biondi's still got all the raspy charm we loved in his work for Schema Records, but he also seems to have a deeper sense of soul here too – especially on the ballads and mellower cuts, which really help expand the palette past the snapping jazzy grooves we've always loved in Mario's music – and which could honestly have him hitting the heights of some of the best American singers from years back. The blend of soul and jazz in the vocals is wonderful – and instrumentation is mostly jazzy, with that sense of groove that works perfectly with Biondi's approach. The "due" in the title refers to the fact that Mario's got a key partner on every track – either a special Italian jazz musician, or guest singer – and titles include "Won't You Come Back", "Under That Sky", "Mother Earth", "Where Are You", "Every Time I Think Of You", "Dreaming", "Free", "What's Happening Brother", and "In The Sun".

new Quiet Nights Orchestra — Movin ... CD
Reach Up (Sweden), 2011. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Great jazzy grooves from the Quiet Nights Orchestra – the second set from the group, and every bit as wonderful as the first! There's wicked blend of modes going on here – a bit of modal jazz, some clubjazz rhythms, a touch of Schema groove, and also just a hint of older jazz modes too – all wrapped together with a youthful, vibrant energy that really makes the whole thing sparkle! If you've ever dug work on labels like Ricky Tick, Schema, or some of the best older Compost material, you'll find plenty here to love – and it's great to know that there's folks like Quiet Nights out there, still putting out grooves like this. Sofie Norling sings these beautiful vocals on a few tracks, but overall most of the set is instrumental – with a nice mix of trumpet, trombone, saxes, and even some vibes. Titles include "Waves", "When We Fly", "Movin", "The Path", "Dreaming", "One More Try", "He Is My Music", and "Falling For You".

new Sahib Shihab — Companionship – Jazz Joint Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Rearward (Italy), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue).... $21.99 Out Of Stock
Double-length brilliance from the mighty Sahib Shihab – a set that collects a number of killer 60s sessions with members of the Clarke Boland Big Band – all of them great! The small combo work here is amazing – hard-hitting modal jazz that matches, if not tops the best MPS/Saba sounds of the time – all produced to perfection with a really sharp edge, and a cutting approach to jazz that's gone onto inspired countless others in the current scene – including artists on Schema and Ricky-Tick Records, as well as most Japanese club jazz combos! But long before any of those cats started copping his groove, Sahib Shihab had it all totally together – a great ear for his own amazing solos on baritone and flute, and a way of hooking up with players like Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Benny Bailey on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. All players here were Shihab's partners in the Clarke Boland Big Band, and they use these small combo sessions to explore some great new ideas – stripped-down groovers that are heavy on rhythm, and really allow full expression from all the players involved. Titles include "Companionship", "Om Mani Padme Hum", "Bohemia After Dark", "Serenata", "Yah Yah Blues", "Balafon", "Talk Some Yak-ee Dak", "The Turk's Bolero", "CT + CB", "Jay Jay", "Stoned Ghosts", "Just Give Me Time", and "Dijdar".
