new Bill Barron — Hot Line (Savoy Jazz – with bonus track) ... LP
Savoy, 1962. Very Good+ .... $16.99
A stunner from Bill Barron! The set's one of the few rare sides that Barron cut as a leader during the early 60s – and it ranks right up there with work by Ornette Coleman or Joe Harriott for sheer raw modern power! The group's a quintet – with Barron and Booker Ervin on tenor, Larry Ridley on bass, Kenny Barron on piano, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – and the warm interplay between Ridley's bass and Barron's piano provides a striking contrast to the sharp-edged horn of Barron and the adventurous drumming of Cyrille. Tracks chop around in a modal groove, but still also retain a bit of soul jazz flair – and like all of Barron's best work, they never forget how to swing, and swing they do! Titles include "Bill's Boogie", "Groovin", "A Cool One", "Playhouse March", and "Work Song". 80's pressing, with previously unissued track "Billie's Bounce".
(Cover has ring & edge wear and a cut corner.)

Savoy, Mid 40s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold .... $3.99
Great material from the 78rpm years of Savoy Records – early singles by Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Illinois Jacquet, Ike Quebec, and John Hardee – sides that nicely skirt the worlds of bop and swing!

Robin Kenyatta — Stompin' At The Savoy ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+ .... $3.99
A great blend of older jazz styles and the sweet 70s funk of Robin Kenyatta – served up with a hip sort of sparkle overall! There's a few familiar jazz modes in here that definitely live up to the spirit of the title – but most of the record is more open, laidback, and somewhat spiritual – thanks to help from a hip lineup that includes Billy Harper on tenor sax, Dwight Brewster and Larry Willis on electric piano, Winston Wright on organ, Lew Soloff on trumpet, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone! Some of the best tracks here are surprisingly open and earthy – almost pointing back towards Kenyatta's Until album, but a bit more inside – and other cuts have a warmer sort of 70s glow, more in the mode that Robin was hitting on other Atlantic albums of the time. Titles include "The Need To Smile", "Mellow In The Park", "Jessica", "River Boat", "Two Bass Blues", and "Smooth Sailing".
(Cover has a factory sticker, a cutout notch, and the remnants of a couple of price stickers.)

new Stan Getz — Complete Savoy Recordings ... CD
Savoy/Jazz Heritage, Late 40s. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent early material from Stan Getz – some of his first recordings ever, done when both his tenor sound and bop were in their infancy! There's a roughness here that's quite different than the Verve style of the 50s – but that's a nice change, too – and it's compelling to hear a very young Stan already finding his own sound on the horn. The set features a mixture of master and alternate takes, with a few unissued ones as well – and cuts include "Opus De Bop", "And The Angels Swing", "Running Water", "Loaded", "Stan Gets Along", "Slow", and "Stan's Mood".

new JJ Johnson — Origins – The Savoy Sessions ... CD
Savoy, 1946/1947/1949/1954. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge batch of work from the great JJ Johnson – material that includes 14 tracks recorded for Savoy as singles in the late 40s – plus the full Jay & Kai 10" album from 1954! The singles were all recorded in 1946, 1947, and 1949 – and they already mark Johnson as one of the most inventive trombonists of his generation – a player working with none of the hoke of earlier eras, and with a clean, modern sound that's almost like that of a bop trumpet at times. Players on these dates include Cecil Payne or Leo Parker on baritone sax, Bud Powell or Hank Jones on piano, Sonny Rollins on tenor, and Max Roach on drums – and titles include "Coppin The Bop", "Jay Jay", "Mad Bebop", "Jay Bird", "Boneology", "Down Vernon's Alley", "Riffette", "Yesterdays", "Audobon", "Don't Blame Me", and "Goof Square". The remaining 8 tracks on the CD are from a 1954 10" album – titled Jay & Kai, with a lineup that's a bit different than the full Savoy album of that name. The core group here is quite unusual – as it features Johnson and Kai Winding as twin-trombone co-leaders, plus Charles Mingus on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums – with either Billy Bauer on guitar on 4 tracks, and Wally Cirillo on piano on 4 others. The use of guitar without piano is especially inventive, and really highlights the modern inflections of the two trombonists – and titles include "Blues For Trombones", "Lament", "The Major", "Reflections", "Coop", and "Blues In Twos".

new Jack McDuff — Re-Entry (Savoy) ... CD
Muse/Savoy, 1988. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
In our opinion, Jack McDuff never made a bad album – and this excellent later session is proof of that statement! The album's got a horrible cover – we'll state that from the start – but it's still a great batch of soul jazz organ tracks, played tightly by McDuff, with a group that includes Cecil and Ron Bridgewater, plus Houston Person on tenor, and Grady Tate on drums. The album features a great remake of McDuff's legendary "Theme From The Electric Surfboard" – done here with a bouncing groove that makes the tune perfect for a jazzy stepper's set – plus the cuts "Cap'n Jack", "One Hundred Ways", and "Walkin The Dog".

new Art Pepper — Discoveries – The Savoy Sessions ... LP
Savoy, 1952. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the best Art Pepper work you'll ever find! This 2LP set is filled with tracks that were originally cut for Savoy Records during the time of Art's Surf Ride album for that label, but which were lost on the cutting room floor for years. Pepper's tone is fantastic – with more of an edge than usual, kind of a raspy soulful quality that you don't find in some of his other work, especially those slicker overrated sessions that most consider "classic". We love this material, and this LP is the first time this material has seen the light of day. There's a number of alternate takes, but don't worry, because they're worth hearing, and often have very different solos. Titles include "Everything Happens To Me", "Art's Oregano", "What's New", "Thyme Time", "Nutmeg", "Suzy The Poodle", and "Straight Life".
(White label promo. Cover has a promo stamp, and some peeling inside the gatefold from being stuck.)

new Jimmy Scott — Little Jimmy Scott – The Savoy Years & More (3CD box set) ... CD
Savoy, 1950s/1975. Used 3CD .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the best material ever recorded by singer Jimmy Scott – presented as a lovely 3 disc package with copious notes, and a lot of bonus material too! The bulk of the sides were cut during the earliest years of Jimmy's career – from 1952 to 1960, all with great small group, jazz-based backing – very nicely handled by the folks at Savoy Records – with just the right sort of pitch to work well with Scott's unique voice. There's a lot of unreleased cuts from these sessions – which makes the package essential even if you own the records – and titles include "If You Only Knew", "If I Ever Lost You", "Once", "What Good Would It Be", "I'll Never Deceive You", "Please Forgive Me", "Guilty", "Anytime Anyday Anywhere", and "The Talk Of The Town". The set then ends with the full album Can't We Begin Again, from Jimmy's "lost" period in 1975 – ne of the most obscure albums we've ever seen from Scott – and that's saying a lot, given how obscure most of his career was before his relatively recent revival! This session – billed in the notes as his "umpteenth comeback" – was recorded in Chicago in 1975, but has a feel that's in keeping with some of Jimmy's more traditional work from earlier years. The set was done by producer Fred Mendelsohn, who'd recorded some of Jimmy's earlier work – and features backings by pianist Ace Carter, plus additional string arrangements from Alex Hamilton. Jimmy's voice is actually a bit less fragile and somewhat deeper than usual – possibly even more confident – and the "jazz with strings" format brings a full feel to the session, but one that never dominates the vocals. Titles include "The More I See You", "I'll Be Around", "Anchored By My Side", "You've Changed", "Can't We Begin Again", "Close Your Eyes", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". Box features 66 tracks in all!

Don Byron & The New Gospel Quartet — Love, Peace, & Soul ... CD
Savoy, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 15.98
A gracious and soulful gospel jazz effort from Don Byron – a set inspired by Thomas Dorsey and Sister Rosetta Tharpe – and he serves both proudly! The set includes a number of Dorsey compositions, plus some nice takes on traditional "Didn't It Rain", Eddie Harris's "Sham Time" and a few other solid interpretions. Also includes the standout Don Byron original "Himmm". Byron plays clarinets on a few numbers, on top of always warm and inventive saxes, with DK Dyson singing, Xavier Davis on piano and backing vocals, Brad Jones on bass and backing vocals and Pheeroan Aklaff on drums – with guests Brandon Ross, Vernon Reid, Dean Bowman, Ralph Alessi & JD Parran. Includes "Highway To Heaven", "When I've Sung My Last Song", "It's My Desire", "Take My Hand, Precious Lord", "Hide Me In Thy Bosom", "I've Got To Live The Life I Sing About In My Song", "When I've Done My Best" and more.

Kenny Clarke — Kenny Clarke Meets The Detroit Jazzmen ... LP
Savoy, 1956. Near Mint- .... $6.99
One of the first albums from guitarist Kenny Burrell as a leader – a date that has him working with players from his hometown scene in Detroit – in case you couldn't guess from the title! Kenny's style here is a bit different than on the Blue Note dates of the time – almost a bit more personal, and leaner – which is a surprise, given the usual heavier feel of a Savoy session. Other players include Pepper Adams on baritone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – and before you complain, we know that not all of these guys are from Detroit – but that's the way they titled the thing, so you'll have to write to the label! Adams is a bit down in the mix, so he never over-dominates Burrell's tone – but he still gets plenty of space to sparkle on his solos, working with those sharp edges that make his Savoy appearances so great. Titles include "Your Host", "Afternoon In Paris", "Apothegh", "Cottontail", and "Tom's Thumb".
(Savoy/Arista pressing from 1977. Cover has a cut corner and light wear.)

Erroll Garner — Erroll Garner Vol 3 – Erroll Garner At The Piano (yellow cover) (10 inch LP) ... LP
Savoy, Late 40s. Fair .... $7.99
Magical early work from Erroll Garner – a 10" LP featuring sides done for Savoy Records, all in that wonderfully evocative, wonderfully fluid Garner style! There's a bit less rhythmic force here than on some of Erroll's more famous work in the 50s, and most tunes have a very gentle, late nite sort of feel. Titles include "Moon Glow", "Confessin", "I Want A Little Girl", "She's Funny That Way", and "Stormy Weather".
(Vinyl has marks, and plays with some crackles. Cover has wear on the front, obscuring the face of Erroll – and other wear and a number in one corner.)

Dizzy Gillespie — Groovin' High ... LP
Savoy, Late 40s. Good+ .... $16.99
40's LP collection of some of the earlier sides that Dizzy cut for Savoy, with be bop classics like "Our Delight", "One Bass Hit", "Oop Bop Sh'Bam", "Salt Peanuts", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The groups include players like Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Al Haig, and Kenny Clarke, and the set's virtually a who's who of early be bop, with Dizzy heading up the lead.
(Red label pressing, with RVG etching and deep groove. Cover has yellowed tape on the seams, center splits on the top and bottom seams, some aging, and a rip on the spine.)

Dexter Gordon — Bopland – The Legendary Elks Club Concert LA 1947 (3CD set) ... CD
Savoy, 1947. New Copy 3CD .... $9.99 14.99
Way more than just a Dexter Gordon album – and instead, an important historic document of the bop scene on the west coast! The 3CD set features the complete recordings from an Elks Auditorium concert in 1947 – lots of long jam session tracks that not only feature history "battles" between Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, but also key work from trumpeter Howard McGhee, tenorist Bill Moore, and alto player Sonny Criss! The lineup shows the hardest side of the LA scene at the time – and although Savoy did issue edits of the material on some key albums, this set of almost 3 hours of music is the first time the whole thing's appeared like this. Titles include "Bopera", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Body & Soul", "Back Breaker", "The Hunt", "Bopland", "Bop After Hours", "Perdido", "Merry Go Round Blues", and "Blow Blow Blow".

Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, & Others — Hollywood Jazz Session Vol 1 – Byas A Drink In 2 Parts (10 inch LP) ... LP
Savoy, Late 40s. Very Good- .... $38.99
The first entry into Savoy's amazing Hollywood Jazz Session series – and a live recording that spans both sides of the record with just one track! Wardelly Gray and Dexter Gordon go head to head in a lineup that also includes Howard McGhee on trumpet, Trummy Young on trombone, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Hampton Hawes on piano – all joining together to show that the west coast had a very hard bop sound going on back in the late 40s – a hard-burning way of trading solos, heard beautifully in an extended performance of "Byas A Drink"!

Duke Jordan — Trio & Quintet ... LP
Savoy, 1955. Near Mint- .... $19.99
Duke Jordan never made many albums as a leader back in the 50s – but all of them are great, including this classic set on Savoy! As you'd guess from the title, the record features Jordan in two different settings – trio and quintet – the former of which features Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums, working in warmly soulful formation with Duke on the first half of the record. The second half brings in Cecil Payne on baritone and Eddie Bert on trombone – a whole new approach to the music, and one that really shows the depth of Jordan's under-documented arranging skills – which here are almost in the territory of Gigi Gryce or Benny Golson. Titles include "Flight To Jordan", "Cu-ba", "Two Loves", "Scotch Blues", "Sultry Eve", "Night In Tunisia", "Summertime", and "Forecast".

Thelonious Monk/Herbie Nichols — Thelonious Monk & Herbie Nichols ... LP
Savoy, 1952/1955. Very Good+ .... $19.99
The pair of great pianists don't play together – but are featured on a side apiece of the record, pulled from their Savoy recordings of the 50s. The album's most notable for the work of Nichols – some of the few sides he ever cut, and along with his two Blue Note LPs, and one for Bethlehem, a key to understanding his rare and short-lived talent for modern improvisation. The Nichols sides feature Chocolate Williams on bass, plus a bit of vocals, Shadow Wilson on drums, and (possibly) Danny Barker on guitar. Titles by Herbie include "Who's Blues", "Nichols & Dimes", "My Lady Gingersnap", and "Good Story Blues". The Monk sides are cut with the Gigi Gryce Quartet – and include "Shuffle Boil", "Brake's Sake", and "Nica's Tempo".

Lee Morgan — Hank's Shout (aka Introducing Lee Morgan) ... LP
Savoy/BYG (France), 1956. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $6.99
One of Lee Morgan's first-ever recordings as a leader, cut way back when he was just a hip teenager from Philly with a bucketful of promise on the trumpet! The session's a crack hard bop date – with an all-star cast that includes Hank Mobley on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and although the proceedings are a bit rough around the edges compared to some of the Blue Note sets, the album's still filled with a heck of a lot of fire, and like all Morgan albums, is totally worth owning! Tracks are longish, and filled with imagination – and titles include "Bet", "Hank's Shout", "Nostalgia", "That's All", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise".

Red Norvo — Move! ... CD
Savoy, Mid 50s. Used .... $13.99
Norvo may have cut some sleepy recordings in his day, but his early sides are usually all pretty great – especially this material, recorded with Tal Farlow on guitar and Charles Mingus on bass! The drum-less combination of vibes, guitar, and bass makes for an almost-exotic approach – one that rings out with some new moods and tones on tracks that are old standards – in a manner that really helps us understand why folks from the old days think Norvo's so great! Titles include "Godchild", "September Song", "Swedish Pastry", "I'll Remember April", "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me", "Cheek To Cheek", "This Can't Be Love", "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Move".

Woody Shaw — Imagination ... CD
Muse/Savoy, 1988. Used .... $3.99
A late date for Woody Shaw, but a great one too – a bit more straightforward than some of his more righteous albums of the 70s, but still proof that Shaw is easily one of the greatest trumpeters of his generation! The album's got a laidback sort of feel, and features a fair bit of familiar standards – but Woody and the group do plenty to transform them, especially on the solo spots. Shaw's leading a quintet here – with Steve Turre on trombone, Kirk Lightsey on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – and titles include "Steve's Blues", "Dat Dere", "Imagination", "If I Were A Bell", "You & The Night & The Music", and "Stormy Weather".

new Cannonball & Nat Adderley — Summer Of 1955 (Bohemia After Dark/Spontaneous Combustion/That's Nat) ... CD
Savoy, 1955. Used 2CD .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A triple-header of hardbop albums – a great package that features 3 Savoy Records classics from 1955, with bonus tracks and great notes too! First up is Bohemia After Dark – an excellent hardbop session from the glory days of the Savoy label – easily one of the label's key 50s classics! Drummer Kenny Clarke's at the front of the group – but all players are great, and the set features work by Cannonball Adderley on alto, Jerome Richardson on tenor, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Nat Adderley on cornet, Hank Jones or Horace Silver on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass. The Adderley brothers sound especially great – and the young Cannonball has a quality here that's more soulful and sharp-edged than his work on Mercury – much more in a Prestige blowing session style! Titles include "Late Entry", "Chasm", "Bohemia After Dark", and "Hear Me Talkin To Ya". Next is more material from the same stretch, originally issued under the title Spontaneous Combustion under Cannonball's name. Adderley and his alto sax are joined by Donald Byrd on trumpet, Nat Adderley on cornet, Jerome Richardson on tenor sax and flute, Horace Silver on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. The tracks include "Spontaneous Combustion", "Caribbean Cutie", "A Little Taste", "We'll Be Together Again", "Still Talkin To Ya", and "Flamingo". Last up is the album That's Nat – a real smoker from a young Nat Adderley – a session that has the leader on cornet, working in a tight hardbop combo with Jerome Richardson on tenor and flute, Hank Jones on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! The tracks are all nicely sharp-edge – that soulful Savoy sound of the mid 50s – and Richardson is especially nice, really getting a great sound from both his tenor and flute. Tracks are somewhat long, with good room for solos – and titles include "Porky", "I Married An Angel", "Kuzzin's Buzzin's", and "You Better Go Now".

Savoy, Late 40s. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest recorded work from trumpeter Kenny Dorham – presented here in an overstuffed set that brings together most of his appearances on the Savoy label! The core standout tunes here are 10 numbers recorded in 1946 by The Bebop Boys – a combo that featured Dorham, Sonny Stitt, and Bud Powell coming together on tight, short, very upbeat bop material that ranked with some of the best early 78s of the genre. Titles by this group include "Seven Up", "Bebop In Pastel", "Serenade To A Square", "Fools Fancy", and "Bombay". Other material on the CD includes a solo by Kenny on "The Jitney Man" by Billy Eckstine, plus 3 tracks with the Milt Jackson Sextet from 1949 – including "Conglomeration", "Bruz", and "Roll Em Bags". Kenny also plays on three 1949 recordings with Charlie Parker – "Barbados", "Scrapple From The Apple", and "Bebop" – as well as four 1956 numbers with Cecil Payne – including "Grooving High", "Man Of Moods", and "Saucer Eyes".

new Billy Eckstine — Mister B & The Band ... LP
Savoy, 1945/1946. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing work from the early, legendary years of Billy Eckstine – that time when he was fronting one of the hippest backing groups a vocalist could hope to have! Eckstine's voice was already becoming the stuff of legend by the time of these recordings – but thanks to contributions from a host of famous boppers, his band was getting equal fame, too – a really legendary lineup that includes such greats as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie,Kenny Dorham, and Fats Navarro on trumpets; Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, and Gene Ammons on tenor; Leo Parker on baritone; Art Blakey on drums; and many other huge names too! The band was virtually a school for a whole generation of jazzmen to come – allowing them to play together, get to know each other, and spin off in important small groups – much in the way the Kenton group a few years later allowed so much development on the west coast. And amidst all this great music, Billy's vocals have never sounded better – much bolder and hard-swinging than in later years!
(Side 1 has a mark that clicks a bit on track one. Cover has light wear, a promo stamp, masking tape on one of the bottom seams a couple of small rips at the opening.)

new Dexter Gordon — Settin' The Pace ... CD
Savoy, 1945/1946/1947. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The near complete studio recordings done by Dexter Gordon as a leader for Savoy in the mid 40s – key 78rpm recordings that helped redefine the sound of the tenor in jazz! The material here is all strongly boppish – and presented with alternate takes on a number of the sessions, making for a whopping 23 tracks that cover most of Dexter's master takes and a good number of unissued alternates! First up are 4 tracks with a 1945 quartet that includes Sadik Hakim on piano – followed by 8 more from a 1946 session with Bud Powell on piano, Max Roach on drums, and Leonard Hawkins on trumpet. These are followed by 3 great tracks from Gordon's 1947 session with Leo Parker on baritone and Tadd Dameron on piano – which roll into the last 8 tracks, all from a 1947 session that includes Fats Navarro on trumpet and Dameron again on piano. Titles include "So Easy", "Dexter's Riff", "Dexter's Deck", "Blow Mr Dexter", "Dexter's Minor Mad", "Dexter Digs In", "Dexter Rides Again", "Long Tall Dexter", and "Index".

Savoy, 1947. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rarity from the bop era – hard-blowing tracks that run for a duration that's way longer than the standard three minutes of most 78rpm singles. Here, Gordon and Gray blow head to head in some of their famous "battle" sessions – working with players like Sonny Criss, Howard McGhee, Hampton Hawes, and Barney Kessel in a format that was very popular on the LA bop scene. Each side of the 2LP set features one long track – and titles include "Disorder At The Border", "Cherokee", "Byas A Drink", and "The Hunt". Great 70s package – with notes on all the material the material.

Savoy, 1958/1979. Used .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet little 50s session from Hawk – recorded for the World Wide subsidary of Savoy, in a great style that has plenty of room for solo space! Tracks are long, and arranged by Billy Ver Plank – with a moody small combo mode that lets Hawkins get in plenty of those edgey bits in his solos, hidden underneath ostensibly sweeter playing. The rest of the group includes Frank Wess, Marshall Royal, and Frank Foster – and titles include "Ooga Dooga", "Thanks For The Misery", "There Is Nothing Like A Dame", and "An Evening At Papa Joe's".

new Milt Jackson — From Opus De Jazz To Jazz Skyline ... CD
Savoy, 1955. Used .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best-known 50s jazz sessions from the Savoy label – a laidback classic that's a great illustration of the label's shift in modes after the early bop years! The setting here is relatively informal – with Milt Jackson as the ersatz leader, working almost in blowing session mode with hip players who include Frank Wess on flute and tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Eddie Jones on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums – all players who relax into a groove wonderfully, and really open up on the album's four long tracks. Titles include the classic reading of "Opus De Funk", plus "Opus Pocus", "You Leave Me Breathless", and "Opus & Interlude". A great little set from Milt Jackson – not just for his work on vibes, but also for some great tenor from Lucky Thompson! Thompson's raspy edge brings a nice degree of soulfulness to the set – a sound that adds depth to the sometimes mellower moments set down by Jackson and the rhythm section of Hank Jones, Wendell Marshall, and Kenny Clarke! The small group setting and the longer tracks make the record a good showcase for Thompson's talents at the time – and his way of building a solo gets plenty of room to do its thing here – on tracks that include "Lover", "Angel Face", "Can't Help Lovin That Man", "Sometimes I'm Happy", and "What's New".

Nice set that brings together the best moments from Eddie Jefferson's Muse years! Eddie's one of our favorite jazz vocalists of all time – and even though he got his start in the bebop years, these 70's recordings are still fantastic stuff. In fact, they may even show him in his best light ever, as the decade was a time when he was being rediscovered by younger fans and players, which added a heck of a lot of energy to his work. The CD includes a range of material – from straight jazz numbers like "Night In Tunisia", "Keep Walkin", and "Ornithology", to stranger 70's funky ones, like "Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again", "Freedom Jazz Dance", and "Zap! Carnivorous".

Savoy, Late 50s. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent album from brother Yusef, and one that's got the haunting mix of hardbop and exotic instrumentation that made these early records so great. Yusef plays argol and flute, in addition to straight tenor, and he's backed by a Detroit group that includes Bernard McKinney on euphonium , Terry Pollard on piano, William Austin on bass, and Frank Gant on drums. The set has a great rendition of Lateef's own "Valse Bouk", plus the tracks "Moon Tree", "Half Breed", and "Stella By Starlight". Long tracks, a nice moody feel, and a cool cover, to boot!

Some of the earliest material ever recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet – early 50s sides that were originally issued as 78rpm singles, then brought together in this self-titled LP! Some of the material was first released under the name of the Milt Jackson Quartet – but featured the lineup of Jackson on vibes, John Lewis piano, Percy Heath bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Yet other tracks on the set have bassist Ray Brown in for Heath and drummer Al Jones in for Clarke – both players who make for a slightly different groove in the company of Jackson and Lewis. Tunes are short, but already show that Lewis love of chromatic tones – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Love Me Pretty Baby", "Milt Meets Sid", "Moving Nicely", "D&E", "True Blues", and "Autumn Breeze".

Savoy, 1950s/1970s/1980s. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mix of older numbers from the Savoy and Muse Records catalogs – strung together to make a package of soul jazz numbers that jumps nicely between the 50s and the 70s and 80s! Most of the work here is from the latter two decades, recorded in that great back to basics mode that made Muse the key heir to Prestige Records at a time when few folks were cutting straight soul jazz. Titles include "Minor Inconvenience" by Richard Groove Holmes, "Dat Dere" by Woody Shaw, "Please Send Me Someone To Love" by Red Garland, "The Dozens" by Charles Earland, "At Last" by Sonny Stitt, "Another Real Good Un" by Jack McDuff, "Work Song" by Grant Green, "Blues In My Heart" by Sonny Criss, "Twelve Inch" by Curtis Fuller, "Whisper Not" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Road Song" by Pat Martino, and "The Breeze & I" by Willis Jackson.

new Kenny Burrell — Jazzmen Detroit ... LP
Savoy, 1956. Used .... $89.99 Out Of Stock
(Red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cut/ripped corner, and some wear on the edges – but is intact and nice on the front.)

new Kenny Burrell — Laid Back ... CD
Muse/Savoy, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $3.99 12.98 Out Of Stock
Obscure work from Kenny Burrell – material originally issued by Muse Records, most of it with a very laidback feel – as you'd guess from the title! The original sides were produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the mellower side of the jazz spectrum. And for the record, she's got Kenny playing in a trio format that's very spacious – with only gentle accompaniment on bass and drums, and most of the sound on the set coming from the strings of Kenny's guitar. Following in the gentle spirit of the set, Kenny even plays an acoustic guitar on some numbers – making for a very different sound than usual. Some tracks are quite long, really letting Kenny open up on his solos – and titles include "So Little Time", "All Blues", "In A Mellow Tone", "In The Still Of The Night", "Tenderly", "Listen To The Dawn", and "You & The Night & The Music".

new Grant Green — Iron City ... CD
Savoy, 1977. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
A pretty obscure album by Grant Green – originally recorded in 1968, issued briefly on a small label, and then finally pressed for the larger masses during the early 70s by the Cobblestone label. Despite this checkered history, though, the album's one of Green's best small group recordings – and features a classic jazz organ trio sound, and features Green's guitar with the organ of John Patton and the drumming of Ben Dixon. We can't imagine a better combo, especially as the three of them were one of the best teams ever to put out soul jazz sessions for Blue Note! The record includes the version of "High Heel Sneakers" that has shown up on a few comps over the years, plus the tracks "Work Song", "Iron City", and "Old Man Moses". The feel is very similar to some of Green's Blue Notes, with a very classic sound.

Shaw's leading a quintet here – with Steve Turre on trombone, Kirk Lightsey on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – and titles include "Steve's Blues", "Dat Dere", "Imagination", "If I Were A Bell", "You & The Night & The Music", and "Stormy Weather".

new Sonny Stitt — Just In Case You Forgot How Bad He Really Was ... CD
Savoy, 1981. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
A smoking little bop set from Sonny Stitt – recorded live at the Keystone in 1981, as sort of a "summit meeting" of horns – one that features Richie Cole and John Handy in the frontline with Sonny! The rhythm section alone is enough to cook this one up nicely – with Cedar Walton on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the sextet is expanded by Bobby Hutcherson, whose vibes seem to bring an even deeper level of soul to the set. But the main focus here is on the horns – and it's a focus that's well-kept, especially on the longer tunes, which really sparkle in the range of tone and mood expressed. Highlights include an extended "Ballad Medley" and versions of "Wee", "Lover Man", and "Star Eyes". (And by the way, that's "bad", as in "good" – in case you couldn't guess from the title!)

Savoy, Mid 50s. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
One of those classic 50s sessions in which a bunch of Count Basie players split off from the bigger group and do some great small combo work on their own! The album is leader-less in its billing – but only because all the players are so well tuned to each other, and have such a simpatico relationship that there's no need for egos to drive the record. Tracks are longish and more open than any Basie setting – and players include Frank Wess on flute and tenor, Kenny Burrell on solo guitar, Freddie Green on rhythm guitar, and Joe Newman on trumpet. Wess' solos are often out in the lead, but Burrell and Newman also get in some nice licks – and titles include "Pin Up", "Playboy", "Miss Blues", and "Blues For A Playmate".

The set's done in that hard-edge Savoy mode of the time – relaxed and open, with lots of dark elements in the rhythms – and beautifully blown solos over the top from Donald Byrd on trumpet and Phil Woods on alto, plus plenty of piano from George! New Jazz, 1961. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Amazing stuff from Ahmed Abdul-Malik – one of the early 60s most enigmatic jazz talents! Malik was Thelonious Monk's bassist for a few years, but by the time of this record, he was working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz, and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. A great statement from vibist Milt Jackson – one of his key solo sessions in a great 60s run of recordings away from the Modern Jazz Quartet! Like the classics that followed this one, the vibe is much more soulful than any of Milt's records with the MJQ – kind of an extension of the groove he hit on 50s dates for Savoy and Prestige, swung with an even tighter feel here in the Impulse Records setting! The backing's from a trio that includes Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and the tracks are short, but have some nice haunting themes that work well with the sensitive vibes of Jackson and piano of Jones. A gem of an early album from Lee Morgan – quite different than his work as a leader for the Savoy label during the same period! Although Morgan's only a wee lad at the time, the album's got an incredible sense of warmth and imagination – one that's steeped in lessons learned from Horace Silver and Art Blakey, and played with a style that's as richly expressive as it is soulful – a no-nonsense, no-tricks approach to the trumpet that gave Morgan a voice that was clearly different from predecessors like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Fats Navarro! The album's got a stellar lineup that includes Horace Silver, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones – plus the virtually unknown Clarence Sharpe, who makes a rare appearance on alto on this session! AK Salim — Afro Soul Drum Orgy ... LP
Prestige, 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Incredible! This is a stunning set of African-inspired jazzy percussion tracks – similar to some of the work done by Art Blakey on his Orgy In Rhythm albums, but with a lot better horn work, and with an overall conception that's much more unified! AK Salim did some sleepier work for Savoy in the 50s – but by the time of this 1965 recording, he was emerging as a progressive composer with a strong talent for bringing together disparate moods and styles. This rare recording was one of his best works ever, and it's one of the most unusual sides cut by Prestige in the 60s. It features Johnny Coles, Pat Patrick, and Yusef Lateef out front on horns – plus backing by a host of Latin and African percussionists. Tracks are very long – and the reed work of Lateef and Patrick makes the set especially worthwhile for jazz listeners. Titles include "Afrika", "Kumuamkia Mzulu", and "Pepo Za Sarari".

Quite possibly THE key example of the magic of Clifford Brown and Max Roach on record – a brilliant studio session that really has the group "incorporating" their sound – forging a bold musical statement that would forever leave its imprint on jazz for years to come! The format here shows Brown and Roach as a key force in 50s hardbop – extending Max's bop idiom of years back, and using Clifford's more lyrical approach to solo work to expand the tone, color, and spirit of their music – linking styles and worlds wonderfully, and forging a sound that's tight, yet also beautifully spontaneous and personal. The rest of the group includes Harold Land on tenor, Richie Powell on piano, and George Morrow on bass – and titles include "Sweet Clifford", "Ghost Of A Chance", "Stompin At The Savoy", "I'll String Along With You", "Mildama", "Darn That Dream", and "I Get A Kick Out Of You".

Monterose and Dorham are fantastic, and really open up on the 5 tracks on the album – all of which are long enough to give the players plenty of room to blow. Milt's vibes have a really chromatic feel here, and a sound that's almost louder than usual – and the rest of the group features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. As on Morgan's third album for Blue Note, most of the tracks are composed by Benny Golson – perfectly penned numbers that maintain a hardbop swing, but which let Morgan explore things with a bit more depth than on some of his sessions for Savoy! new Blue Stars/Henri Salvador — Jazz In Paris – Pardon My English/Henri Salvador Plays The Blues ... CD
Universal (France), 1956. New Copy .... $8.99 11.99 Out Of Stock
Excellent vocal jazz from postwar Paris! The Blue Stars were a legendary combo that were led by Blossom Dearie, and which featured a host of great vocal talents that would later go onto form groups like Les Double Six or The Swingle Singers, including Mimi Perrin and Christine Legrand, as well as instrumental jazz artists like Fats Sadi and Roger Guerin, who are doing some rare vocalization here. The first 4 tracks on the set are pulled from a 1956 ep – and it features the group on the tracks "Jumpin At The Woodside", "C'est La Vie", "Broadway At Basin Street", and "Grapevine". The next 12 tracks are from the Pardon My English LP – which has the group down to a sextet, working without Dearie, in a groovy accented English vocal style that's a direct precursor of the vocalese grooving of Les Double Six. Titles on that set include "Small Talk", "Move", "Did You Close Your Eyes?", and "Promises & Lies". The last 3 tracks on the set are a bit different – featuring vocals and guitar by Henri Salvador, with backing on bass and drums. The style of Salvador's work is still similar, though – way more vocalese than the "blues" in the title would make you expect – and the tracks are lifted from a rare Fontana ep-only release that was recorded in the same year. Titles include "Don't Blame Me", "Salvador Plays The Blues", and "Stompin At The Savoy".

new Marzette Watts — Marzette Watts ... CD
ESP, 1966. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99 Out Of Stock
A vision of the future of avant garde jazz – recorded in 1966, and one of the most groundbreaking titles on the legendary ESP label! Saxophonist Marzette Watts is a player who hardly ever gets his due – but was part of the key new wave of younger players on the east coast scene of the 60s – fitting well in a lineage of Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, and other important forces in avant jazz at the time. This album's one of the few he ever recorded – along with an important session for Savoy – and is mindblowing right from the start – a fresh blend of new thing ideas with the freer, looser modes of the ESP scene – handled perfectly by a well-chosen group that features Byard Lancaster on alto and flute, Clifford Thornton on trombone and cornet, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, Karl Berger on vibes, Juni Booth and Henry Grimes on bass, and JC Moses on drums. Watts plays tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet – and titles include "Backdrop For Urban Revolution", "Ia", and "Geno".

new Frank Wess — Southern Comfort (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Prestige/Universal (Japan), 1962. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A cool cooker from Frank Wess – one of his great early 60s albums for Prestige, most of which sparkle even more strongly than his 50s dates for Savoy! By this point in his career, Wess had a firm attachment to the flute, and he was also one of the more soulful soloists of the early 60s. Work on albums like this that clearly set the stage for Hubert Laws and Bobby Humphrey in years to come – especially in the way that Frank snakes his instrument around some really lean, mean rhythms. The group here's a bit bigger than usual – with Oliver Nelson handling the arrangements and also playing tenor (Wess blows a bit of tenor too) – and other players who include Albert Aarons on trumpet, George Barrow on baritone sax, and Tommy Flanagan on piano. Tracks are longish, with a great rolling soul jazz groove – and titles include "Blues For Butterball", "Summer Frost", "Gin's Beguine", and "Shufflin".

new Paul Bascomb — Bad Bascomb! (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Delmark, Early 50s. New Copy .... $8.99 12.99 Out Of Stock
A tremendous tribute to the tenor talents of Paul Bascomb – pulled together here from rare 78rpm sides for United Records – including more than a few that were never issued at the time! Bascomb's got a rich and soulful tone – easily one of the best of the postwar generation, even though Paul never got the same sort of due as tenorists on big labels like King, Chess, or Savoy! The set features most of the same players on all tracks – Bascomb on tenor, Eddie Lewis on trumpet, Frank Porter and Tommy Waters on alto, and Duke Jordan on piano – and Porter sings on a few tracks too. Titles include "Mumbles Blues", "Blues & The Beat", "Black Out", "Nona", "Love's An Old Story", "Liza's Blues", and "Soul & Body". 17 tracks in all!

new Yusef Lateef — Yusef Lateef At Cranbrook & Elsewhere ... CD
Argo/El (UK), 1957/1958. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A rare treasure from Yusef Lateef – one of his hardest to find albums, recorded right around the same time as his magical work for Savoy! The record has Lateef playing in his local Detroit area – working with Terry Pollard on piano, William Austin on bass, and Frank Gant on a host of percussion instruments. The tracks have that open, percussive, and exotic feel that we love the most in Lateef – soul jazz taken to a very righteous territory, and one of the first powerful flowerings of the Detroit underground. Includes a really long version of "Morning", plus "Let Every Soul Say Amen", "Brazil", and "Woody N You". CD also features some bonus tracks from other sessions – including "Before Dawn", "Mahaba", "Taboo", "Playful Flute", "The Beginning", and "Open Strings".

new Kid Ory — Jazz In Paris – Theatre Des Champs-Elysees (aka Kid Ory In Europe) ... CD
Verve/Universal (France), 1956. New Copy .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Kid Ory gets plenty of room to do his thing here – caught with a great degree of warmth and expression on this key Paris live date from the mid 50s! The record's got a fluid, easy-going swing that's echoes some of the best trad sides cut by American players in Paris during the postwar years – a sense of energy that seems to re-ignite Ory in front of a newly-appreciative audience. The group's a septet driven by Kid's dynamic work on trombone – and also features Alvin Alcorn on trumpet, Phil Gomez on clarinet, Cedric Haywood on piano, and Julian Davidson on guitar. Titles include "South", "Savoy Blues", "Muskrat Rumble", "Dippermouth Blues", "Down In Jungle Town", "Memphis Blues", "Washington & Lee Swing", and "4 or 5 Times". CD features 72 minutes of music – which seems to be much longer than the original Verve LP!

new Art Pepper — Art Pepper With Warne Marsh ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1956. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A lost treasure – finally brought back to light! The album features previously unissued material by the team of Art Pepper and Warne Marsh – tracks recorded back in 1956 for Contemporary records, but only issued many years later as part of the Complete Contemporary project for Pepper's work. Why these dates never made it to wax is a real mystery to us – because the pairing of Pepper's alto and Marsh's tenor is perhaps even greater than the more famous team of Marsh & Konitz – and the sound here is completely wonderful – fluid, modern, and exceptionally poised – yet never without soul! CD includes a few master and original takes of some numbers – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "Tickle Toe", "Warnin", "Stompin At The Savoy", "What's New", "Avalon", and "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me".
