✨✧ Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Beaver & KrauseIn A Wild Sanctuary ... CD
Reprise/Collectors Choice, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best records ever from Beaver and Krause – largely because there's not so much noodling! This one features the pair on moog and organ, with help from Dave Grusin on piano, Milt Holland on percussion, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Bud Shank on reeds. The sound isn't jazz at all – but more a mix of spacey grooves and bubbling bits, with much more of a song-like structure than on other records. There's a few nice cuts here that almost hit a groove, and even when they don't, they still have a nice stripped down moogy sound that's very pleasing. Titles include "Spaced", "Salute To The Vanishing Bald Eagle", "People's Park", "Walking Green Algae Blues", and "Another Part Of Time". CD

✨✧ David MurraySanctuary Within ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
David Murray in some really wonderful company here – playing both tenor and bass clarinet on a highly percussive date that features work from Sunny Murray and Kahil El'Zabar! Murray handles straight drums, and Kahil works with a host of percussion – very much in the same soulful spirit as the work he did with David Murray on the duo's album for Sound Aspects, but with a bit more force here, thanks to Sunny's drumming. The quartet's completed by bassist Tony Overwater, who's round tones are especially welcome on some of the gentler tracks – giving them a nice sense of pulse – and titles include "Waltz To Heaven", "Most Of All", "Song For A New South Africa", "Ballad For The Blackman", "Return Of The Lost Tribe", "A Sanctuary Within (parts 1 & 2)", and "Short & Sweet". MotorheadIron Fist (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Sanctuary/Universal (Japan), 1982. Used 2CD Gatefold ... $39.99
Motorhead tearing it up in the early 80s and arguably hitting their absolute peak – the final album with the classic trio lineup of Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor – capping off one of the most trailblazing periods for any band in rock & roll history! Iron Fist is as unrelenting and stubbornly gruff as the preceding Overkill and Ace Of Spades LPs, a loud and clear statement that this band was committed in full to the sound they created. Includes "Iron Fist", "Hert Of Stone", "I'm The Doctor", "Loser", "Shut It Down", "Speedfreak", "(Don't Need) Religion", "Bang To Rights" and more. CD

✨✧ KinksKinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (3CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Sanctuary (UK), 1968. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
More Kinks music than you could ever hope for in one package – a whopping 3CD set that brings together every bit of music associated with the landmark Village Green Preservation Society album! The original record is one of the best-ever British pop albums from the 60s – and it has the Kinks moving past their garage rock roots into a whole new realm of picture postcard pop perfection! The 15 songs on the original LP are the blueprint for closeted Brit postwar worry, anxiety, and disillusion – classics like "Do You Remember Walter?", "Picture Book", "Sitting By The Riverside", "Village Green", "All of My Friends Were There", and "The Village Green Preservation Society". This new CD moves past those 15 tracks to feature a total of 52 titles in all – including mono and stereo mixes of tracks on the record, alternate takes, remakes, and obscure cuts like "Groovy Movies", "Spotty Grotty Anna", "Days", "Mr Songbird", "Polly", and "Berkley Mews". Great stuff all around – and a dream for Kinks fans like us! CD

✨✧ De La SoulGrind Date ... CD
Sanctuary, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first post-Tommy Boy De La Soul album – and it's a winner! We've been on board with De La throughout their long career – anyone with open ears must know that even their spottiest records (and this is NOT one of those) feature at least a handful of treasure tracks. Grind Date is easily the best later De La Soul album, and brevity is as key to the album as the group's proven longevity. 12 tracks, 49 minutes, no skits. Two songs in you'll find the stellar "Verbal Clap", one of J Dilla's finest productions ever, with precise on beat rhymes by De La. Other highlights include "He Comes" with Ghostface, a soulful track that would sound just as great on Ghost's Supreme Clientele. Is Grind Date the new sound for the mid 00s? Will it blaze trails and be co-opted by the next hot producers? Are the lyrics as solid as they could be? Probably not in each scenario, but that's not the point – these guys are consummate musicians, molding their rhyme schemes to the tracks with focus and precision. Most critics will say this is De La's best album since Stakes Is High. We'll say it's better! Featuring production by Dave West, J Dilla, Madlib and 9th Wonder – plus guest appearances by Yummy, Ghostface, Carl Thomas, MF Doom, Common and others. Other tracks include "The Future", "Much More" feat Yummy, "The Grind Date", "Shopping Bags", "Days Of Our Lives" with Common, "Come On Down", "Rock Co. Kane Flow" featuring MF Doom and more. CD

✨✧ KinksKinks – The Anthology 1964 to 1971 (5CD set) ... CD
Pye/Sanctuary, 1960s/Early 70s. Used 5CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of work by The Kinks – a set that's way more than just the usual anthology you might expect from the title – because it features loads of unissued tracks and rare mixes too! All recordings are recently remastered, and they come from our favorite years of the group – their seminal 60s sides for Pye Records, done at a time when they were transforming from a simple rocking act to one that was able to paint these beautiful little pictures of England in transition – able to evoke all the cares and concerns of the British sensibility at this key point in time, but always in a way that was never overdone, and carried a great sense of wit – not to mention a hell of a lot of catchy lyrics too! The package features a stunning 140 tracks – in a package with detailed liner notes, artist information, and rare photos too – and alongside hits and singles, you'll also get tracks like "Good Luck Charm (unissued mix)", "She's Got Everything (backing track)", "Who'll Be The Next In Line (session excerpt)", "Little Queenie (live 1964)", "Tell Me Now So I'll Know (demo)", "Mr Pleasant (unissued mix)", "Two Sisters (unissued mix)", "Afternoon Tea (alt mix)", "Misty Walter (alt mix)", "Did You See His Name (alt ending)", "Village Green Preservation Society (live 1968)", as well as a few interview bits, and even a "US Tour Spot" radio ad too! ✨✧ MotorheadAnother Perfect Day (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sanctuary, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
A heavy effort from Motorhead that started a new phase for the metal pioneers – their only record with ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson in the group! A few of the songs are the loud, fast, blistering Motorhead at their most incendiary – and on the other tracks they're a bit more methodical and melodic, but melodic for Motorhead at this point still sounds link shards of steel being spun in a blender. Includes "Back To The Funny Farm", "Shine", "Dancing On Your Grave", "One Track Mind", "I Got Mine", "Die You Bastard" and "Tales Of Glory". CD

✨✧ MotorheadOverkill (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Metal Is/Sanctuary, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Motorhead at their thunderingly heavy, breakneak speediest, shrapnel-voiced best! For a band that's best enjoyed for it's raw and direct brute force and belligerent swagger, it's still important to approach with a sense of perspective – and know that before Motorhead, heavy rock just did not sound like this. Many, many tried to follow Lemmy's lead afterwards, with varying creative success, but we'll always go back to the trailblazers. Includes the all time classic title tune, second only to "Ace Of Spades" in their canon, plus "Stay Clean", "(I Won't) Pay Your Price", "I'll Be Your Best", "Capricorn", "No Class", "Tear Ya Down", "Metropolis" and "Limb From Limb". Includes 5 bonus tracks. CD

The busy fingers of the RZA, who's also been wrapping up his score for Quentino Tarantino's Kill Bill, took some time out to record this new full length. Thankfully, he dropped the Bobby Digital robot thing; this album is filled with the kinda scratchy soul beats we loved so much on his Ghost Dog instrumentals. Alas, these aren't instrumentals – but Wu alumni ODB, Ghostface, Masta Killa and others make appearances. 16 tracks including "Bob N' I", "The Grunge", "We Pop", "Grits", "Fast Cars", "Chi Kung", "You'll Never Know", "Drink, Smoke, & Fcuk", "Koto Chotan", "Cherry Range", "The Birth" and more. Sanctuary, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated People" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! 13 tracks in all. CD

International Anthem, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A sublime blend of jazz and organic sounds from multi-instrumentalist Bex Burch – a record that sounds as if it might have come from the studio of Carlos Nino, but which almost has a more personal, poetic sort of quality! There are some sounds of nature here – including bird calls from a sanctuary in Illinois – and even the more familiar instruments, like piano, drums, reeds, violin, or bass are often mixed with some "room" elements that really locate the recording in a special place – in ways that also seem to have some of that post-studio touches around the edges that we love from the International Anthem label. Burch clearly delivers most of the sound herself, almost doing an "in residence" to create the music – but she gets help along the way from guests who include Ben LaMar Gay, Dan Bitney, Rob Frye, Anna Butterss, and Macie Stewart – on titles that include "When Love Begins", "Don't Go Back To Sleep", "Dawn Blessings", "Follow Me I Make You Happy", "Start Before You're Ready", "Pardieu", and "If I Was You I'd Be Doing Exactly The Same". The last album in a legendary run of music from keyboardist Doug Carn – his final album for the Black Jazz label, and a set that pushes even farther than his previous efforts! Jean Carn isn't in the group this time around, but the set does feature a totally great twin-vocal approach – with singing by Joyce Green and John Conner, blending their voices together in a style that's right up there with the most righteous 70s jazz experiments by Horace Silver or Billy Gault! This vocal balance really brings a new sort of power to Carn's music – furthering the righteous spirit of earlier years with a hell of a lot of energy – also aided by great instrumental work from Ronnie Laws on tenor and soprano sax, Thurman Green on trombone, Calvin Keys and Nathan Page on guitars, and Big Black on percussion. Columbia, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... $5.99
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark by which so many other records would be judged (and fail) in years to come! The double-length set makes full use of all four sides of the record – expanding the flow (as well as the lineup) of the original Davis modal vision – and using all players to amazing effect, so much so that most players here turn out some of their best recorded work ever! The lineup is virtually a whose who for the sound of fusion in the 70s – including Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Lenny White and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus Jumma Santos and Don Alias on added percussion. Titles include "Pharaoh's Dance", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down". CD

Columbia, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
A rare lost gem from the Boston scene of the early 80s – and a set whose "Din" features work from members of Mission Of Burma! Dan Ireton is Dredd Foole, and has a raw, moody way of putting over the vocals – strongly in the American post-punk tradition of the time, with a mode that's a nice link to some of the more experimental work on the Ohio scene – and a perfect fit with the dark instrumentation on the set – filled with plenty of lead guitar by Clint Conley, who's bringing his best MoB modes to the set – alongside organs and more guitar from Roger Miller, bass from Martin Swope, and drums from Peter Prescott. Titles include "Sanctuary", "Behind You", "Greatest Band In Hell", and "So Tough". PLUS, this reissue adds in rare bonus material – a version of "Sister Ray" from the album sessions – and live tracks "When I Was Young" and "So Tough", and a great take on Pere Ubu's "Final Solution". Also features a hidden bonus track – a cover of The Stooges "We Will Fall". CD

Reprise, 1966. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
Ray Davies is really coming into his own by the time of this third album by The Kinks – penning almost all the tunes in the set, and really starting to stretch out with some of his more unique ideas! The songs are already beginning to show that picture postcard side of British pop that was the Kinks stock in trade during their best years – and the themes and subjects are really expanded from the group's music of the previous years – already shaking off their American influence, and bringing the world a decidedly English version of rock and roll. Of course, the album does feature the group's wonderful cover of "Milk Cow Blues" – still a nice link to the earlier years – plus the Davies originals "When I See That Girl Of Mine", "I Am Free", "Till The End Of The Day", "The World Keeps Going Round", "I'm On An Island", "It's Too Late", "You Can't Win", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Gotta Get The First Plane Home", and "Ring The Bells". A rare electric outing from legendary altoist Jackie McLean – and one that comes off surprisingly well, given that the move was quite a shift for the reedman! The album's got a spiritual current that McLean developed in some of his earlier 70s material – like his gems for the Steeplechase label – but also mixes in some funky fusion elements too, in a blend that almost puts Jackie in the territory that Gary Bartz hit with his Music Is My Sanctuary album – another musician who made a similar shift at the time! Production is by Mitch Farber, who also wrote most tracks – and Jackie really holds his own in the setting! Titles include the classic funk numbers "On the Slick Side" and "Long Time Lover" – plus "Gotta Get A Piece Of Your Soul", "The Molimo", and "Dr Jeckyll & Mr Funk". CD

Columbia, 1970. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive moment for Miles Davis – legendary live performances at both the Fillmore East and Fillmore West from 1970 – presented here in their entirety for the first time ever! Part of the record features Miles' work that appeared in edited form on the Miles Davis At Fillmore record – but issued here without the edits, so that you can really hear the group take off in unbridled, Bitches Brew-like energy – served up by a lineup that includes Steve Grossman on tenor and soprano sax, Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes, Keith Jarrett on organ, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion and flute. The set then also includes material recorded in April at the Fillmore West – but all unissued tracks, and not the material that was on the Black Beauty album at all. These tracks feature a similar lineup, but without Keith Jarrett – on a few long tracks. The set separates out all the tunes with great clarity and better mastering than before – and adds 100 minutes to the Fillmore East set. Titles include "Directions", "The Mask", "It's About That Time", "Bitches Brew", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Footprints", "Paraphernalia", "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down", "Willie Nelson", and "The Theme". ✨✧ Miles DavisBlack Beauty – Miles Davis At Fillmore West ... CD
Sony, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Four sides of noisy, funky, stretched-out playing from Miles Davis – recorded at the Fillmore West, but with an intensity that matches some of Miles' crazy electric recordings from Japan during the early 70s! The music is a powerful blast of music that stretches out over the double-length set of the package – with a style that moves from heavy-duty avant playing, then back to more mellow grooving, then kicks it out nice and hard again – a heavy dose of rock mixed in with the fusion, but still plenty jazzy throughout. In all, the record is probably one of the most heavy-duty that the Miles electric group recorded in the 70s – and the lineup on the set features Steve Grossman on saxes, Chick Corea on electric piano, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion.
