new Anna Maria Alberghetti — Love Makes The World Go Round (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
MGM/Universal (Japan), 1962. New Copy .... $32.99
A nice sort of change for the lovely Anna Maria Alberghetti – and a record that's got the same sense of poise and class you might guess from her picture on the cover! Anna's still got that great range she first showed in the late 50s, but she's also got a great punch in the arrangements at points – a new sort of flourish provided by Luther Henderson, and which makes some of these tunes swing in ways we wouldn't have expected a few years before. There's still a few of the mellow ballads that brought Alberghetti her initial fame, too – and titles include "More Than You Know", "I Want To Be Happy", "I Don't Know Why", "Do It Again", and "How Long Has This Been Going On".

Andy & The Bey Sisters — Round Midnight ... LP
Prestige, 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of the rare few records recorded by a young Andy Bey and his sisters! The group was an obscure jazz harmony trio formed by Andy in his earlier years – and it features him on piano, joining with the vocals of his two sisters Salome and Geradine Bey – in a soulful, moody style that's unlike anything else we can think of! Their three heavenly voices are backed by Kenny Burrell's guitar, Milt Hinton's bass, and Osie Johnson's drums, and there's lots of room around the arrangments for the Beys to stretch out and sing beautifully. Includes a haunting arrangment of "Round Midnight", plus "God Bless The Child", "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "Solitude", and the "Love Medley".

Betty Carter — Round Midnight (Roulette) ... LP
Roulette, 1975. Very Good+ .... $6.99
Excellent work from Betty Carter – much more sophisticated than some of her 60s work! Betty's captured here in her hip trio format that she developed to fantastic heights during the 70s. Betty sings standards and originals with a warmth an imagination that we can hardly describe accurately – bringing emotion into the songs that we'd hardly heard in earlier recordings, and using a trio in ways that we'd never heard before with a vocalist. Incredible stuff all the way through, very much on a par with any of Betty's later work, with "Do Something", "My Shining Hour", "What's New", "Round Midnight" and "I'm Pulling Through".

Compost — Life Is Round ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1973. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A classic set of spiritual fusion from this short-lived allstar group Compost – featuring Harold Vick, Bob Moses, Jumma Santos, and Jack DeJohnette! Vick's at his moody soulful best here, in a mode that's similar to his Strata East work – and the record also features occasional vocals by Lou Courtney and Jeanne Lee. They hit a fairy feverish, funky jazz mode throughout, and every player is in incredible form here. Titles include "The Ripper", "Moonsong", "Changing Streams", "Mon Cherry Popsicool", "Compost Festival", "Life Is Round", and "Buzzard Feathers".

Cymande — Second Time Round ... LP
Janus, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
The second album of dubby funk by the legendary Cymande! This monster funk combo had a totally unique sound, with rolling bassy-grooves, and a very nice stoner-funk feel that had distinct Jamaican influences. This album's got some of their best tracks like "Anthracite", "Fug", and "Them & Us" – and it's one of their 3 classic titles from the early 70s!

Miles Davis — Round About Midnight (180 gram vinyl – mono edition) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1956. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
Thelonious Monk wrote the title tune, but Miles Davis makes it almost his own here – blowing with a subtly moody magic that makes the album one of his true treasures from the early Columbia years! John Coltrane's along on tenor sax – helping Davis expand the sound the pair first forged on Prestige – and also present is the rhythm trio of Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones – impeccably recorded here with a wonderful sense of space. Titles include Miles seminal take on "Round Midnight", plus "Tadd's Delight", "Dear Old Stockholm", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "A Leu Cha".

Kenny Dorham — Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia – Complete (RVG edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1956. Used 2CD .... $11.99
One of our favorite albums ever by Kenny Dorham – and a really different session than his usual studio work! The album captures Kenny in a relaxed live setting, with a bit more dirt on his horn than usual – blowing with a tone that's much more open and a bit less poised – in the company of a really great group that features JR Monterose on tenor, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Arthur Edgehill on drums. The CD features a total of 17 tracks in all – titles from the original LP, plus rare extra material, and some bonus alternate takes – all remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Titles include Dorham's boppish "Mexico City", plus other enigmatic compositions like "Monaco" and "Hill's Edge", and tracks that include "Round Midnight", "Riffin", "My Heart Stood Still", and "NY Theme".

Deon Jackson — Love Makes The World Go Round ... CD
Atlantic/Collectors Choice, 1966. New Copy .... $5.99 11.98
Great stuff from one of our favorite soul vocalists of the 60s! We love Deon Jackson – we love his sweetly honest vocal style, we love his songs, and we love the great production he gets from the legendary Ollie McLaughlin! This album is the only one he ever cut – and it's a masterpiece all the way through! Ollie's production mixes some wonderful lilting qualities with rollicking hard soul – it's a far-reaching approach that works incredibly well with Deon's unique approach to the vocals! Includes the super-hit "Love Makes The World Go Round" and a charming uptown soul take on "King Of The Road", plus "Come Back Home", "1-2-3", "You Said You Love Me", "SOS", "Love Is What You Make It" and "Hush Little Baby".

King Family — King Family Live In The Round ... LP
Warner, 1966. Very Good .... $3.99
Warm wonderful whitebread work from the King Family! A great example of the way the large King ensemble really shone in the space of a concert performance – filling up the space well with all the different voices in the extended family, and shifting into different groupings that keep things interesting throughout! Titles include "The Men In My Little Girl's Life", "What The World Needs Now", "On A Clear Day", "I Said No", "Why Did I Choose You", "Guadalajara", and "Baby Sitter's Blues".

new Light Of The World — Round Trip (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Chrysalis/EMI (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $12.99
A Brit soul classic from Light Of The World – and a set that has the funky group working strongly with producer Augie Johnson! Given Johnson's background with Wayne Henderson, the move is a great one for the group – one that really helps them bring out the best warm sounds from their tight instrumentation, in ways that really showcase some of the jazzier elements in their music! The main groove is still plenty soulful, and often focused around the vocals – but given that the group also features a young Jean Paul "Bluey" Maunick on guitar and Peter Hinds on keyboards, you can bet the instrumentation's pretty great too. The set easily matches the best US albums of the type at the time – and titles include "London Town", "Time", "I'm So Happy", "More Of Myself", "Pete's Crusade", and "I Walk The Streets Alone". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks – pulled from the Brass Strings N Things live album recorded by Beggar & Co – a post-Light Of The World group that features members of that group with artists from Central Line and vocalist Noel McKoy. These live titles include "Time", "Movin", "Bahia De Palma", "Somebody Help Me Out", and "Cosmic Lust".

Makrokosmos Quartet — Round Midnight ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99 19.99
A set of performances dedicated to Thelonious Monk – yet music that's quite far from anything by Monk that we've ever heard before! Yet there's also a definite Monkish inspiration going on here – a sense of space and timing that resonates in different, often drawn-out ways – performed by the group's twin pianos, handled by Ufuk and Bahar Dorduncu – and percussion by Francois Volpe and Sebastien Cordier. The result is more avant compositional than jazz, yet the performance here is key too – on performances of compositions that include Oliver Schneller's "Resonant Space", Guillermo Gregorio's "Construction In Four Parts", Fabrizio Rat Ferrero's "L'Abito Non FaIl Monaco", and Stefan Wirth's "Standards".

new Medline — People Make The World Go Round ... CD
Melting Pot (Germany), 2013. New Copy .... $16.99 18.98
A contemporary riff on benchmark 70s soul jazz and funky fusion from French producer Medline – who reimagines classics by Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and others! It's good, solid stuff – reinterpreting the material in a way that's very mindful of its influence on classic hip hop – with some tighter beats and other nods to classic 90s hip hop production – but it's done with an emphasis on live instrumentation that's pretty great! Medline plays most of the instruments himself, with lots of Afro percussion and jazzy flute – with guest vocals on a number of tunes by Roni Alkekengi. Includes "A New Day", "People Make The World Go Round", "Wind Parade","Expansion" and "Everybody Love The Sunshine" with Roni Alkekengi, "Eboness", "Red Clay" and more.

Round Trip — Round Trip ... CD
MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy .... $18.99
A real stormer from Round Trip – a group whose roots go back to the legendary Sins Of Satan album on Buddah, and who also work here with great production from Al Perkins – in a style that's a bit like his music with One Way! We're not sure if "round trip" was an answer to One Way's name – but whatever the case, the group's a great part of the Perker corner of the universe at the time – and really share his wonderfully warm way with a groove! Oliver Cheatham's in the group at this point – and his vocals really help deepen their sound, especially on some of the mellower cuts, which stand as a real surprise for this sort of record – and give the whole thing a much richer vibe than you might expect. Titles include "Woman", "Nothing Wrong With Dancing", "Not In The Cards", "Let's Go Out Tonite", "Lost Inside Of You", and "Higher Consciousness".

Archie Shepp — Round About Midnight – Live At The Totem Vol 2 ... CD
Marge (France), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99 16.99
A brilliant second volume to this classic series of live recordings from Archie Shepp – and a record that shows both ways he could really shine in the 70s! The record's got a wonderful 28 minute take on Archie's classic "Blues For Brother George Jackson" – an Attica Blues-era number that's possibly the closest thing that Shepp ever wrote to a groover – played here in a really open, free way that has a lot more edges than the famous studio version – including some amazing sharp lines from Shepp on tenor sax – over rhythms from Siegfried Kessler on piano, Bob Cunningham on bass, and Clifford Jarvis on drums. The rest of the album showcases Shepp's return to tradition – a new love of bop that he didn't actually even show in his earliest recordings in the US – but which marked Archie's reinvention of himself as an equally straight tenorist at the time – on titles here that include long takes of "Donna Lee" and "Round Midnight".

Ginji James — Love Is A Merry Go Round ... CD
1970. New Copy .... Around July 10, 2013
One of our favorite Chicago soul sessions of all time – and the only album ever cut by Texas-bred singer Ginji James! Ginji's got a style that's both sweet and deep – which makes her a perfect fit for the sweeping, loping arrangements of the record – very much in the best Brunswick Chi-soul style of the time – and carried off perfectly by a team of studio talents that includes Carl Davis, Eugene Record, Willie Henderson, and Tom Tom! Ginji's vocals are really wonderful – every bit as great as that of labelmates like Barbara Acklin or The Chi-Lites – and the whole set sparkles with a warmth that's pretty darn hard to find, even in the best soul albums from the time! Titles include "Honey Babe", "I Knew It Was Love", "Until You Return", and "You Hurt Me For The Last Time.

Claude Williamson — Round Midnight ... CD
1956. New Copy .... Around June 12, 2013 (delayed)
One of the greatest albums ever from west coast pianist Claude Williamson – from the cool image on the cover, right down to the freely swinging grooves on the vinyl! Williamson's working here in trio formation with Red Mitchell on bass and Mel Lewis on drums – mostly on familiar tunes, but done in ways that have a really personal sort of approach. The album often has Claude taking his time on the intros to the tunes – setting things up in broad flourishes in a near-solo mode, before letting the bass and drums come into play – and this style creates a nicely moody feel that matches the late nite image of the cover. Titles include "Hippy", "Stella By Starlight", "I'll Know", "Tea For Two", "Love Is Here To Stay", and "The Song Is You".

new Betty Carter — Round Midnight (Atco) (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Roulette (Japan), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
An interesting early album from Betty Carter – less jazz than some of her later work, but with a bit more of an edge than some of her ABC recordings. The album's got sort of an arranged sophisticated jazz style – in the mode of 60s work by Esther Phillips or Dinah Washington – and Betty handles some wonderful material with a dark edge, like "Two Cigarettes In The Dark", "Nothing More To Look Forward To", "Round Midnight", "I Wonder", "Who What Why Where When", and "The Good Life", all done in a sorrow-drenched style that's incredibly compelling, and a very different side to Betty's career. An album you'll be hard-pressed to find on vinyl – and nicely repacked for CD with 2 bonus cuts: "One Note Samba" and "Shine On Harvest Moon".

new Amen Corner — Round Amen Corner – The Complete Deram Recordings ... CD
Deram/RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Sweet jangle pop from Amen Corner – one of the sunniest UK groups of the late 60s! The group checked in big with their hit "Bend Me Shape Me" – and follow through here with an equally catchy, equally groovy set of tracks – tunes that really let them move past the straighter format of a hit, and work through a whole range of excellent modes in the space of an album! There's a much more expansive style here than we'd expect – as even familiar tunes are handled with playful arrangements and offbeat instrumental flourishes – more than enough to take a core mod pop groove, and push it into some cool pop psych territory. Titles include "Expressway To Your Heart", "Good Times", "Lost & Found", "Gin House", "Something You've Got", "Judge Rumple Crassila", and "Bend Me Shape Me". CD features bonus tracks added to the original Deram album – including "The World Of Broken Hearts", "Nema", "Satisnek The Job's Worth", "Run Run Run", and "High In The Sky".

new Pierre Michelot — Jazz In Paris – Round About A Bass ... CD
Universal (France), 1963. New Copy .... $8.99 11.99 Out Of Stock
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by this excellent French bassist – the legendary Pierre Michelo, a player whose name graced countless others as a sideman, but only a few as a leader! The album's an enigmatic batch of tracks that has Michelot working with a very hip set of French musicians – most notable of whom is pianist Maurice Vander, who accompanies Michelot on all of the cuts on the album. The tracks shift from moody spare numbers to complicated fuller ones, done with a bigger group that includes horn players like Roger Guerin on trumpet, Raymond Guiot on flute, Pierre Gossez on alto, and a young Michel Portal on tenor. The overall style of the tracks is quite unusual – with the bass at the front, and the rest of the band falling into place in a groovy style that almost reminds us a bit of some of Henry Mancini's more jazz oriented scoring. Titles include "Chet", "Sous Les Ponts De Paris", "Gavotte", "Sweet Feeling", and "Elephant Green".

new Akira Miyazawa — Round Midnight ... CD
King (Japan), 1985. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Japanese jazz players of all time – still sounding wonderful on this date from the mid 80s! Akira Miyazawa's easily the most soulful tenorist to come out of the Japanese scene of the 60s – and here, he works with a free, open approach to his horn that almost reminds us of Sonny Stitt in his later years – a really masterful way of opening up, yet never losing his groove – rhythmic, even in some of the most laidback moments – with an inherent sense of swing that matches his depth of tone. Many tracks are ballads, but blown way past obvious interpretations – and in addition to piano trio backing, the set's got some strings too – although Akira's tenor is always very strongly out front in the mix – a quality that makes the record feel like a Verve "with strings" set from the 50s. Titles include "Round Midnight", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Poor Butterfly", "I Can't Get Started", and "My One & Only Love".

Byron Allen Trio — Byron Allen Trio (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
ESP, 1965. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
Beautifully free alto work from Byron Allen – a player who really shines brightly on this rare session for ESP Records – one of the few ever cut under his own name! Allen's got a style that's right up there with the 60s best from Ornette Coleman or Marion Brown – able to move with a fluidity that's breathless, even amidst rhythms that are very loose and open – as the trio here works in a style that almost echoes some of the harmelodic modes of Coleman, but which eventually pushes farther towards the freedoms of other artists on ESP! The set has some wonderful bass from Maceo Gilchrist, whose round, rolling tones really make the album sparkle – as do the punctuated drums of Ted Robinson. Titles include "Today's Blues Tomorrow", "Time Is Past", "Three Steps In The Right Direction", and "Decision For The Cole-Man".

new Gene Ammons — House Warmin' ... LP
Trip, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP .... $7.99
Like some of the other issues on Trip, this set brings together some great sides that sort of fell between the cracks in an artist's career. These nice rarer sides by Gene Ammons seem to be recorded by Jug during the early 60's, when he was jumping around his contractual agreements with a number of labels, and recording sessions for just about everybody. The first LP features Jug in the studio with Howard McGhee (the set was briefly issued under his name, on Argo) and a guitarist we're pretty certain is Jake Fisher (from other issues of this material), for a cool laidback soul jazz session that's probably one of Jug's most open-ended from the time. The tracks are all long, with a lot of room for solo space, and a round mellow tone. Titles include "Housewarmin", "Nothin' But Soul", "Jivin Around" and "Jug & McGhee". The second set's a hard-hitting blowing session, cut very much in the mode of Gene's late 50s sides for Prestige – and with a very accomplished group of soul jazzers that includes Nat Adderley, Frank Foster, Bennie Green, and Frank Wess. The groove has a nice raw late night sound – and tracks are pretty long and open-ended. Titles include "Litty Ditty", "Sermonette", "Juggin Around", and "Jim Dog".

We'd love to say we've been fortunate enough to have heard more than a handful of the great Loma and Warner 45s, but that isn't the case – so this compilation from Kent as rewarding for us as just about anything they've put together in recent years – which is really saying something! A number of the tracks are should-be anthems that really allow the girls to sing big – backed by brass and tight arrangements to suit. That said, they're diverse talents, and there's some sweeter girl group styled tunes here that come across just as strongly. Glorious! Titles include "You're Absolutely Right", "Who Would Want Me Now", "Jive Cat", "See The Silver Moon", "Pretty Red Balloons", "I'm Under The Influence Of Love", "Baby I'll Come", "My Soul Concerto" and more from The Apollas proper, plus "He Ain't No Angel" and "Wait 'Round The Corner" by The Lovejoys, "I've Got So Used To Loving You" and "Why I Was Born" by Leola Jiles and more. 25 tracks in all.

Azymuth — Flame ... LP
Milestone, 1984. Near Mint- .... $6.99
Warmly mellow grooves from Azymuth – a set that nicely lives up to the "Flame" in the title – and which shows the strengths the trio picked up during their years in the US! The sound here is round and soulful – a great fusion of the group's roots in the 70s Brazilian fusion scene, and some of the smoother styles of the California one – never in a way that's too soft or commercial. As usual, there's a heavy emphasis on the keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami – who also sings a bit in a wordless, scatting sort of way. Flora Purim joins in on vocals on the cut "The Textile Factory" – and other titles include "Tamal Vista Boulevard", "Rapa Poeira", and "Flame (O Amor E Chama)".
(Cover has a promo stamp, some clear tape on the opening, and small stickers on back.)

Giorgio Azzolini — Tribute To Someone ... CD
Rearward/Schema (Italy), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
A lost Italian gem from the 60s! Bassist Giorgio Azzolini was one of Italy's best players during the postwar years, and this handsome reissue brings to light one of his rarer sessions from the 60s. The record's a lyrical septet session, with Azzolini's warm round basslines right up front, and beautiful solo work by a young Gato Barbieri on tenor, Franco Ambrosetti on trumpet, and Renato Sellani on piano. The session has the warmth and sensitivity of some of Horace Silver's best early 60's Blue Note work, and the tracks include "Tribute To Someone" by Herbie Hancock, "Sometime Ago" by Sergio Mihanovic, "The Stroller" by Benny Golson, and "Hiroshima" by Gato Barbieri. Very nice stuff – and with the usual high level of Rearward packaging!

Bob Baldwin — Betcha By Golly Wow – The Songs Of Thom Bell ... CD
Peak, 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
A sweet instrumental tribute to the 70s soul genius of Thom Bell – plus the Delfonics and Stylistics as well – served up with lots of mellow keyboards from the mighty Bob Baldwin! Given that Bob's got a firm lock on soulful sounds of the 21st Century, he's a great choice to revive the music of Bell – helping to bridge the space of decades with his well-crafted lines on piano and keyboards – and with great guest work from artists who include Marion Meadows, Vivian Green, Will Downing, Paul Taylor, Ragan Whiteside, and Russ Freeman! Titles include "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "People Make The World Go Round", "Break Up To Make Up", "I'll Be Around", and "La La Means I Love You".

new Kenny Barron — Scratch ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1978. New Copy .... $12.99 14.99
A slightly more aggressive trio session than usual for Kenny Barron – still done with that round, warm tone on the keys that we love so much – but hitting the tracks with a stronger punch that's a bit unusual, and which might be the result of using Dave Holland and Daniel Humair as part of the trio! All but one of the tunes on the set are original numbers, and there's a mix of Monkish and modern modes sitting next to some more traditional Barron approaches to the piano. Kenny really takes off at some points – playing fast, free, and with incredible intensity – and titles include "Scratch", "Water Lily", "Quiet Times", "The Third Eye", "And Then Again", and "Song For Abdullah".

Beat Konducta (Madlib) — Beat Konducta Vol 4 – Beat Konducta In India ... LP
Stones Throw, 2007. New Copy .... $12.99
The long awaited sides C & D in Madlib's incredible blend of Bombay soundtrack-styled funk, blunted Eastern beats, and all round stunning Middle Eastern accented hip hop instros! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Amazing! "Get It Right", "More Rice", "Indian Bells", "Club Scene", "Duel", "Organ Stroll", "In The Cave", "Malfunction", "Victory", "Smoke Circle", "Raw Ground Wire", "New Bombay", "Shah Sound", "Another Getaway", and more.

James Bond (Jimmy Bond) — James Bond Songbook ... CD
Mira/BGP (UK), 1965. New Copy .... $12.99
Way more than just a James Bond cash-in record – and instead an ultra-hip jazz session from the west coast scene of the 60s! The James Bond at the helm of the record is actually Jimmy Bond – the great bassist who worked on some key sessions of the late 50s and early 60s as a sideman, and who turns out to be a surprisingly great leader on this rare mid 60s date! The record is more jazz than anything else – played with a crime/spy bent, to be sure – but also flowing with really great solos and a fair bit of a bossa influence in the rhythms! The group here is more than hip enough to make the record work – with Harold Land on tenor sax, Bobby Bryant on trumpet, and Buddy Colette on flute and tenor – all working in a sextet led by Bond, with plenty of round, warm, almost modal lines on his bass – punctuated nicely by piano from Joe Parnello and drums by Joh Guarin. Arrangements are by Dick Groove – who keeps things very groovy – and many of the tracks here are actually original numbers written by Bond and Warren Baker, titled after Ian Fleming books that had not yet been made into movies at the time of this album! Titles include "Casino Royale", "Moonraker", "For Your Eyes Only", "007 Theme From Dr No", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Diamonds Are Forever", and "Live & Let Die".

Bongo-Logic — Bongo-Licious ... CD
Montuno, 1993. New Copy .... $9.99 13.99
Modern classics from Bongo-Logic – a group with a great flair for mixing the new and the old! There's plenty of jazz in this set – thanks to work from Art Webb on flute – but there's also a charanga groove going on too – with violin dancing strongly around the piano lines from Joe Rotundi – arranged with lots of fresh touches throughout. Jazz elements share the space equally with charanga styles – especially on the two Monk numbers "Straight No Chaser" and "Round Midnight" – and the production style is right on the money for the music. Titles include "Los Musicos", "Luna Blanca", "Bongo-Licious", "Soncachao", "Corta La Cana", and "Sister M".

Brady Bunch — It's A Sunshine Day – Best Of The Brady Bunch ... CD
MCA, Mid 70s. New Copy .... $4.99
Ah, yes, it's a sunshine day, alright – and this batch of groovy, polyester 70s TV pop fits just right! God help us for admitting this, but these goofy, well arranged, dumb fun numbers from the Brady Kids 70s LPs are a heck of a good time, and a pretty true distillation of 70s vanilla pop sounds. It ain't nearly as glorious as the best stuff from the Monkees or the Partridge Family as real pop art, nor does it need to be. Like Jonny Bravo, they they fit the suit just fine! Includes "It's A Sunshine Day", "We Can Make The World A Whole Lot Brighter", the very Brady cover of cheese classic "American Pie", "Keep On", "Merry Go Round", "Candy (Sugar Shoppe)", "Truckin' Back To You", "We'll Always Be Friends"

Bronx Cheer — Bronx Cheer Was Here – Barrelhouse & Jugband Rock & Roll 1969 to 1973 ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $6.99
Wonderful work from the little recorded Bronx Cheer – which combined uptempo acoustic jug band rock with an uncommonly catchy brand of unique tunefulness – tunes from their wonderful debut LP on Dawn Records, plus some very nice stuff from the unreleased second LP! Bronx Cheer has roots in the jug band groove, with chiming acoustic guitars, tight rhythm and vocals with a little bit of a good natured twang, but their recordings show a willingness to plug in and rock out once in a while. 19 tracks in all: "Barrelhouse Player", "Prison Wall Blues", "Adult Games", "Springdale Blues", "Round & Round", "Fourth Street Mess Around", "Back Door", "Won't Act Right", "Ballad Of Reg Purvis", "Same Again", "Wild Cat", "Long Lovin' Night", "Life Is An Empty Box", "Midnight Mover", "Tell Me" and more!

Ann Burton — Remember 1966 to 1988 ... CD
Muzak (Japan), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy .... $32.99
Some of the greatest work we've ever heard from Dutch singer Ann Burton – rare recordings presented here for the first time ever, and arguably even better than some of the commercially-issued material she cut back in the day! There's a light, swinging style to many of these tunes we really like – especially the 60s cuts that make up the first half of the record, which feature Ann in an ebullient, highly jazzy mode that recalls Blossom Dearie and some of our other favorites of the 60s. Lyrics are in English throughout, and backings are a variety of combos – and all the original recordings are from the archives of the Netherlands Institute of Sound & Vision. Titles include "Put On A Happy Face", "Once", "The Wildest Gal In Town", "Gypsy In My Soul", "Me Myself & I", "The End Of A Love Affair", "Round About", "Humpty Dumpty Heart", and "In The Wee Small Hours".

Rickey Calloway — King Of Funk ... CD
Rickey Calloway, 2010. New Copy .... $2.99
An amazing full length collection of work from Rickey Calloway – an artist we've really only known from individual singles, but one who packs a hell of a punch in the space of this rock-solid CD! Rickey's groove is right out of the James Brown camp of the glory days – tight tight tight instrumentation, filled with lots of riffing grooves that are right on the beat – topped with Rickey's amazing vocals, which feel like they're lifted from some obscure funky 45s from back in the day! Production is nice and raw on most numbers and there's a few mellower deep soul tracks which help round out the sound wonderfully – giving the set the full scope you might normally expect to hear from Lee Fields. The packaging on this one's a bit slim, but the music's totally great – and the set features 16 killer cuts that include "Tell Me", "Lose It", "Shed A Tear", "Groove Master", "Get The Groove", "That's The Way", "Paying My Dues", "Get It Right", "A Letter", "I'm In Love", and "The Feeling".

Mike Campbell — Secret Fantasy ... CD
Celeste (Japan), 1980s. New Copy .... $26.99
A 22 track collection of work by Mike Cambpell – a little-known Bay Area vocalist from the 80s, with a sweetly swinging style that's very much in the tradition of Mark Murphy, another San Francisco contemporary. The CD features 12 tracks from Campell's 1982 album Secret Fantasy, originally issued on the Palo Alto Jazz label – plus another 10 tracks from various sessions throughout the 80s, all with a similar warm small combo feel. The tracks are a mix of originals, standards, and some hipper fare from the left end of the jazz vocal spectrum – and titles include "Dat Dere", "Early", "Another Star", "I'm Always Drunk In San Francisco", "Round Midnight", "Soft Strum Blues", "And It All Goes Round & Round", "Mystery", "Alone Again", and "High Wire".

Cat Mother & The All Night Newsboys — Albion Doo Wah ... CD
Polydor/Real Gone, 1970. New Copy .... $12.99 13.98
A really compelling second set from Cat Mother & The All Night Newsboys – and quite different than the first! On their Polydor debut, the group had Jimi Hendrix at the production helm – but this time they're taking things on their own, with a feel that's nicely loose and freewheeling – and which really matches the woodsy image of the cover! The core mix of guitar and organ is still as tight as before – but it also gets some nice rootsy touches from violin, mandolin, and acoustic guitar – used in ways that echo folk and maybe preface a bit of redneck rock – yet which also have a bit more of a North Cali sort of sensibility in the long run. Titles include "Riff Raff", "Boonville Massacre", "Turkish Taffy", "Last Go Round", "Good Times", "Albion Doo Wah", and "Strike A Match & Light Another".

Chi-Lites — Heavenly Body/Me & You ... CD
Chi Sound/Expansion (UK), 1980/1981. New Copy .... $16.99
Really sweet later work from The Chi Lites – 2 classics on a single set! The sound on Heavenly Body is less Brunswick Chicago soul than before – and the group step along in warm and sophisticated backings that sparkle in the best Chi-Sound style – uptempo at some times, but sweet and mellow at others. The vocals are superb – easily adaptable to both sorts of settings, but especially great on the ballads – which really seem to benefit from the move away from some of the more cliched styles that the Chi-Lites were falling into during their last years on Brunswick. Eugene Record produced, and titles include "Love Shock", "Round & Round", "Heavenly Body", "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You", "Give Me A Dream", and a remake of "Have You Seen Her". Heavenly Body has the group hitting a whole new groove, but keeping things real in the vocal department! The album's got a great mix of ballads and groovers – similar to other Chi-Sound productions at the time – and the upbeat numbers follow nicely from the group's work on Mercury in the late 70s, more kicked up than their fragile ballads of the early 70s, but with great vocals nonetheless. Production is by Carl Davis with group leader Eugene Washington, and arrangements are by an old Brunswick crew who include Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders. Titles include "Whole Lot Of Good Good Lovin", "Tell Me Where It Hurts", "Me & You", "Never Speak To A Stranger", "Get Down With Me", and "Try My Side".

Cortex — Troupeau Bleu (with bonus track) ... CD
Underdog (France), 1975. New Copy .... $16.99
A legendary bit of funky fusion from the French scene of the 70s – the standout set from Cortex, a combo who's very heavy on the keyboards! The tunes have a feel that's quite different than American electric work of the time – funky, but also a bit breezy too – with a strong Brazilian influence in some of the rhythms, and hip use of female vocals alongside the Fender Rhodes – which makes for a double layer of sound that's totally great! There's a bit of alto sax in the instrumentation, but most of the sound comes from the interplay between keyboards, voice, bass, and drums – rolling along in a sound that's stunningly soulful, and which makes the record one of the hippest European dates from the decade. Tremendous all the way through – with tracks that include "Automne", "L'Enfant Samba", "La Rue", "Go Round", "Madbass", "Sabbat", "Mary Et Jeff", and "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver". This CD version includes the bonus track "Jazz Dance".

new Crusaders — Standing Tall ... LP
MCA, 1981. Near Mint- .... $1.99
The Crusaders standing tall at the start of the 80s – getting great grooves from the lean trio of Wilton Felder on saxes and bass, Joe Sample on keyboards, and Stix Hooper on drums! The mighty Barry Finnerty handles most of the guitar solos here – although David T Walker also plays a bit too – and other high-end guests round out the sound with a very professional feel, including Billy Preston on organ, Marcus Miller on bass, and Larry Carlton on more guitar. As with other Crusaders albums of this vintage, vocals play a part in the sound – sung here by Joe Cocker on two tracks, sounding almost better here than on his own material. Titles include "Standing Tall", "This Old World's Too Funky For Me", "Luckenbach Texas", "The Longest Night", and "Sunshine In Your Eyes".

A session of "collectors items" that Miles Davis recorded for Prestige in the 50s – both dates that were too short to be issued as albums by themselves, combined here into one full length record! The first batch of material is from 1953 – and features Davis working with Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker (playing here under his "Charlie Chan" session name) – all in a mode that steps off a bit from the boppishness of Davis' Blue Note recordings. The second half of the record is from 3 year later, 1956 – and again features Rollins, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. One of the most heartfelt film scores we've ever heard from Francesco De Masi – thanks to some great guitar work from the legendary Alessandro Alessandroni! There's a nice mix of moods in the soundtrack – some playful melodies that almost have a Nino Rota quality, offset by other moments that have the scene-setting quality of a western – all brought togther nicely in a round of short tracks that change mood easily as the set rolls on! Great remastering, and a bit of viola from Dino Asciolla too – and titles include "I Fiori Di Noe", "Ferace Destino", "Il Circo", "L'Amore Di Noe", "Noe", "Eroe Vagabundo", and "Il Tango Di Noe".

Gladiator films don't get any groovier than this – and Franceso De Masi really rises to the occasion with one of his most dramatic soundtracks of the time! The music's got the usual brash horns and brooding percussion you'd expect from a film of this nature – but it also bursts forth with a power that seems to go beyond the familiar – a very vivid sense of orchestrations that can be especially colorful at times, with these flourishes on the horns that may well match the action on the screen! A few lush moments help round things out nicely – but never in a sleepy way – and the CD features 27 tracks from the film, all remastered, and with notes in English and Italian.

Jackie De Shannon — For You (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/RPM (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99
Jackie DeShannon serves up some wonderful renditions of popular tunes from the 50s and 60s – stepping aside from her usual role as songwriter, and singing sweetly to some great arrangements from George Tipton! The style is somewhere between 60s pop and more sophisticated vocals – often sharing the best elements of both at the time, and offering a side of Jackie's talents that isn't often captured this way on record. The song choices are especially nice – making the record way more than just a "filler" set – and titles include "If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody", "Are We Dancing", "Everything Under The Sun", "Merry Go Round In The Rain", "No Easy Way Down", "Dream", "Don't Dream Of Anybody But Me", and "It's All In The Game". CD adds 9 more tracks from the album New Image – a similar set of standards and covers with arrangements by Marty Paich – and a set of titles that includes "A Proper Girl", "Sunday Kind Of Love", "The Carnival Is Closed Today", "I'll Be Seeing You", "That's The Name Of The Game", and "Poor Someone".

new Delfonics — Tell Me This Is A Dream ... LP
Philly Groove, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The Delfonics just kept on getting better and better! The longer the group recorded, the more they picked up this strange spacey quality that pushed them past some of their contemporaries of the early 70s. And on an album like this, they prove that they're way more than just Thom Bell puppets by showing that they have a rich talent for a wide variety of complicated arrangements that really push the vocal group sound of the 70s. They take many stylistic risks, coming up with really sinister new harmonies, and always managing to stay clear of the cliches that buried some of their mates on the charts. Bell still arranges some of the material, but the record also features work by Norman Harris and Caldwell MacMillan, who did the real genius work on the record. This masterpiece includes the sublime "Hey, Love", plus "Walk Right Up to the Sun", "I'm A Man", "Too Late", "Love You Till I Die", "Looking for a Girl", and "Round & Round".

Neil Diamond — Velvet Gloves & Spit ... LP
Uni, 1968. Sealed .... $3.99
Neil Diamond's first official LP for the Uni label – originally released in 1968 – a great record that was initially way underappreciated! This is a solid portrait of Neil that's too often overlooked – with his heart-on-sleeve lyrical sensibility and anthemic songcraft on full display long before the glittery, superstar trappings of his 70s ouvre! His vocals and catchy tunefulness are as extroverted as ever, in a post Brill Building groove that's B-I-G, loads of fun, and not nearly as hamfisted as later stuff! Includes "Two-Bit Manchild", "Pot Smokers Song" (OK, this one is pure honeyglazed ham – but it's the good tasty kind), "Brooklyn Roads", "Sunday Sun", "Practically Newborn", "Knackelflerg", "Shilo", "Merry-Go-Round" and more.

Tom Dissevelt/Kid Baltan — Song Of The Second Moon (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Limelight/Omni (Australia), Late 60s. New Copy .... $16.99 19.99
Amazing stuff! This is a totally cool bit of early electronics from the late 60s – and the music is dark and spooky, with lots of weird wild harsh electronics (if you know Dissevelt's other albums, you'll know what we mean!) The whole thing sounds sort of like a mad robot playing a crazy space organ on a merry go round while dropping acid – and that description only gets at half the record! It's a great one if you like spooky 60s electronics, and titles include "Moon Maid", "Sonik Re-Entry", "Twilight Ozone", "Orbit Aurora", and "The Ray Makers". Very cool! Omni Records always fleshes out their releases with loads great bonus material – and they once again go to great lengths on this one! It features the rare stereo version of the album with outtakes, alternates, mono versions more previously unreleased raritites. 20 tracks in all!

A wonderful album from George Duke – and one of our favorite records from his legendary years at Columbia! George Duke's always had plenty of Brazilian elements in his music – but this album really brings them all together – offering up a perfect blend of Duke's keyboards and Cali soul with some key additions from the Rio scene of the time – a mix of singers and musicians who really help round out the sound and authenticate George's ears for Brazilian music! The album was actually recorded down in Rio – and features great contributions from Simone, Milton Nascimento, Roberto Silva, Toninho Horta, and Airto – all working beautifully under Duke's leadership, on cuts that include "Brazilian Love Affair", "Cravo E Canela", "Brazilian Sugar", "Sugarloaf Mountain", "Ao Que Vai Nascer", and "I Need You Now". CD features a single edit of "Brazilian Love Affair".

Bill Evans — Momentum – Stadsschouwburg Groningen, The Netherlands 1972 ... CD
Limetree (Germany), 1972. New Copy 2CD .... $24.99 36.99
A double-sized set of live Bill Evans material from the early 70s – a great amount of material that showcases a time when Evans had an especially fluid, open touch on the keys of the piano! The group here features the great trio with Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums – and unlike some other live Evans albums of this nature, which tend to mike the piano more than the rhythm, this one really has all three points of the trio coming out strongly together – especially Gomez' wonderfully rich, round tones on the bass. Titles include "Two Lonely People", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Re Person I Knew", "Elsa", "Emily", "Turn Out The Stars", and "Quiet Now".

Kim Fowley & Others — King Of Creeps – Lost Treasures From The Vaults Vol 3 – 1959 to 1969 ... CD
Norton, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy .... $12.99
We love Kim Fowley, and can never get enough of his genius – and no matter what the setting, Fowley always seems to move around the maddest corners of rock and pop music! This raw batch of gems is all pulled from the Fowley vaults – and features a host of indie singles recorded in LA between his bigger bursts of fame – some with Kim in the lead, lots more with lesser-known talents all given Fowley's forceful treatment in the studio – a push forward that makes just about every track here sparkle like some long-lost garage rocker or weird novelty number. Norton provides very detailed notes that are as much a musical journey as the cuts themselves – and titles include "The Knight In Shining Armor" by Knights Of The Round Table, "Kalani Honey" by John Paul Jones, "Young & Wild" by Renegade Five, "Big Bad Wolf" by Kim Garry & The Rhythm Kings, "Watch Your Step" by Larry Green & The Rhythmaires, "Goin Away Baby" and "Golden Apples Of The Sun" by Grains Of Sand, "Wanted Dead Or Alive" by The Rogues, "Moses" by Navarros, and "The Trip", "Astrology", and a rare radio spot all by Kim Fowley.

Free Design — Sing For Very Important People (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1970. New Copy .... $13.99
Sunny wonderfulness from one of the grooviest vocal groups of all time! This is Free Design's legendary album for children – referred to in the title as "very important people" – and it's a strangely hip set of tracks designed to get the kids to open up in a groovy late 60s kind of way. Given that the Free Design always sounded like a bunch of hippy kids, the setting is perfect for them – and they dreamily make their way through a great set of nearly all original tracks that sparkle with an innocent charm that's slyly deeper than you'd guess from the kid-orientation of the set! Original titles include "Love You", "Kites Are Fun", "Daniel Dolphin", "Ronda 'Go Round", "Bubbles", "Little Cowboy", and "Scarlet Tree". CD features 2 bonus tracks – both outtakes from "For The Love Of Your Lips", a Chapstick commercial!

Fun Horns — Natural Music ... CD
Amiga (Germany), 1989. New Copy .... $16.99
A record that's got a lot more to offer than just the "fun" promised in the title – and a set with a much deeper feel than you might guess from its wrapping paper cover! The quartet is definitely heavy on horns – soprano and alto sax from Volker Schlott, tenor and flute from Thomas Klemm, trombone from Jorg Huke, and trumpet and flughelhorn from Joachim Hesse – all working here with only a bit of percussion, but mostly just crafting these amazing lines in space between their horns – in ways that maybe echo a bit of the sax quartet style of the time from the US, but which definitely goes way way beyond as well! Things are never too far outside, and at many times, there's this sense of color and tone that almost recall some late 50s/early 60s experiments from folks like Jimmy Giuffre or Art Farmer – with all the sense of swing and soul that might imply. Other numbers have a more contemporary feel – and titles include "Round Funk", "Primo Tono", "Permanent'z", "Kanon II", "Bluestekuchen", "3 Saxophonie Nr 2", "Free Notes", and "Largo Lapidarius".

Gloria Gaynor — Love Tracks (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $26.99
THE lasting classic from Gloria Gaynor – the record that contains her tremendous hit "I Will Survive", and a great batch of disco grooves overall! The album's got a simple, honest sort of approach, despite its release in an era of overblown dancefloor sets – and arranger Freddie Perren does a great job of balancing all the elements here – hitting strong on the rhythms, but mixing in bits of strings from Gene Page and others – all in a sound that's round, warm, and surprisingly soulful, despite the big crossover fame of the hit on the record. In addition to a nice long take of "I Will Survive", other tracks include "Anybody Wanna Party?", "Please, Be There", "I Said Yes", and "You Can Exit".

new Harry 'The Hipster' Gibson — Boogie Woogie In Blue ... CD
Musicraft, Mid 40s. Used .... $23.99
We've never been entirely sure if Harry Gibson is the same person as Henry Gibson – known for his offbeat acting in Nashville and Laugh-In – but given the wavy hair he's got on the cover of the set, we like to think so! The tracks are a nice little exercise in small combo jive vocals, and have a feel that's similar to some of Slim Gaillard's work from the time. Coincidentally enough, Slim's on guitar on some tracks, but the main vocals (and piano parts) are by Gibson – done in a slightly humorous mode that's pretty darn great. Titles include "Who Put The Benzedrine In Mrs. Murphy's Ovaltine?", "Riot In Boogie", "Get Your Juices At The Deuces", and "I Stay Brown All Year 'Round".

Dexter Gordon — Bopland – The Legendary Elks Club Concert LA 1947 (3CD set) ... CD
Savoy, 1947. New Copy 3CD .... $9.99 14.99
Way more than just a Dexter Gordon album – and instead, an important historic document of the bop scene on the west coast! The 3CD set features the complete recordings from an Elks Auditorium concert in 1947 – lots of long jam session tracks that not only feature history "battles" between Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, but also key work from trumpeter Howard McGhee, tenorist Bill Moore, and alto player Sonny Criss! The lineup shows the hardest side of the LA scene at the time – and although Savoy did issue edits of the material on some key albums, this set of almost 3 hours of music is the first time the whole thing's appeared like this. Titles include "Bopera", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Body & Soul", "Back Breaker", "The Hunt", "Bopland", "Bop After Hours", "Perdido", "Merry Go Round Blues", and "Blow Blow Blow".

Wycliffe Gordon — Intimate Ellington – Ballads & Blues ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2013. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99
Hardly the "intimate Ellington" you might guess from the cover – and instead something even better overall! The album's not just laidback readings of tunes from Duke – as most numbers have this lowdown and gritty sort of vibe – more blues than ballads – played by the Wycliffe Gordon group with a really soulful sense of rhythm – almost more 60s soul jazz than the usual Ellington groove – and a bit like the sort of a record that an Ellington sideman might have made for Prestige. There's a sweet snapping groove on most of the numbers – and a few more mellow numbers round out the set nicely. Dee Daniels sings a bit on those mellow cuts, but most numbers are instrumentals – played by Gordon on trombone and trumpet, Adrian Cunningham on tenor and soprano sax, Zach Brock on violin, Aaron Diel on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass, and Alvin Atkinson on drums. Titles include "Stevie", "Pie Eye's Blues", "Jeep's Blues", "Caravan", "Something Sexual", "Lotus Blossom", and "The Intimacy Of The Blues".

new Steve Grossman — Some Shapes To Come (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
PM/Shout (Japan), 1974. New Copy .... $19.99
Beautifully choppy jazz from Steve Grossman and his legendary 70s comrades Gene Perla and Don Alias – one of the heaviest hitting American combos of the time! The trio have a tight fusion sound that's as full-on as it is funky – and Grossman blows some amazing work on tenor and soprano sax that cut into the tunes with a really fierce bite – while Perla delivers these round, powerful basslines – and Don Alias alternates between free percussion and some driving funky drums! For this session, the group's joined by Jan Hammer on electric piano and moog, playing in a nicely restrained fashion that's not nearly as overblown as his later work, and which jams into the groove just perfectly – making for a sweet electric set that's a real standout of the 70s. The set includes the breakbeat track "Zulu Stomp", plus "Alodian Mode", "Haresah", and "Extemporaneous Combustion".

new Jim Hall — Jim Hall Live ... LP
A&M, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold .... $4.99
A work of understated brilliance from guitarist Jim Hall – and one of our favorite records by him! The setting is simple – Hall plays live with a trio, on a set of familiar standards – but the results are remarkable, as both Hall and the rhythm section manage to bring a hell of a lot of swing and imagination into such a tiny space! Hall's always had a rhythmic approach to his work, but here, playing with drummer Terry Clarke and bassist Don Thompson, he really opens into a great groove – stretching things past his usual standard, and bringing a lot more soul into the set than you might expect. The tunes are ones you'll recognize – "Angel Eyes", "Round Midnight", and "The Way You Look Tonight" – but the real charm is what Hall and the trio do with them!

Gene Harris — 3 Sounds/Gene Harris Of The Three Sounds ... CD
Blue Note/Dusty Groove, 1971/1972. New Copy .... $12.99 15.99
A pair of killers from keyboardist Gene Harris – both recorded for Blue Note, and back to back on a single CD! First up is Gene Harris/The 3 Sounds – the last Three Sounds album for Blue Note – and the funkiest too – thanks to lots more electrification than usual, and some killer arrangements from the mighty Monk Higgins! Monk's really at the top of his game here – going past even his great previous work for the group, and working with a tight, sharp edge that recalls his funky 45 brilliance of the 60s – yet tuned a bit more towards the electric Cali jazz of early 70s Blue Note! Gene Harris plays loads of funky piano lines – and in addition to the trio's core electric bass and drums, the set also features some added work on percussion from Paul Humphrey – who really brings in a kick – plus added guitar, congas, and even a bit of Hammond from Higgins too! Some cuts even have a bit of vocals too – sung in this offbeat way that's a wild approach to soul. There's some killer breaks on the set – including the massive "Put On Train" and "What's The Answer" – but the whole set smokes, and other cuts include "I'm Leaving", "You Got To Play The Game", "Your Love Is Just Too Much", "Did You Think", "Hey Girl", and a mad version of "Eleanor Rigby". On the second album – Gene Harris Of The Three Sounds – Gene really steps into the solo spotlight – moving away from his work with the Three Sounds trio, and headed into even more righteous territory – as you might guess from the trippy image on the cover! The set features Harris mostly on acoustic piano, but amidst larger arrangements from Wade Marcus that really round things out with a warm, soulful edge – mixing guitar from Sam Brown and Cornell Dupree with Gene's lines on piano – and giving things an extra kick at the bottom with drums from Freddie Waits, and percussion from Johnny Rodriguez and Omar Clay. The record echoes Harris' older roots at some points, yet comes across with a richer 70s vibe too – a hip 70s style that's strongly due to the contributions of Marcus' arrangements. Tracks include a great remake of "Listen Here", which begins with a great funky break; a sweet steppers version of "Killer Joe"; and the tracks "Lean On Me", "Day In The Life Of A Fool", "Django", "Emily", and "C Jam Blues".

Hampton Hawes — This Is Hampton Hawes – Vol 2 The Trio (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1956. Used .... $14.99
The darkly brooding image of Hampton Hawes on the front cover of this one is a real standout in the mostly-sweet cover lineup of the Contemporary label – but it's also a great indication of the sound of the record, which is something different than most of its contemporaries! Hawes is working here at his top-shelf early best – stepping around the keys of the piano with a sense of grace and spaciousness – but also a hard-hitting, highly rhythmic mode on the left – a bit soul jazz at times, mixing earthy elements with the sweeter, lyrical moments in his solos. Rhythm is by the team of Red Mitchell and Chuck Thompson – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Blues For Jacque", Stella By Starlight", "Steeplechase", "Round Midnight", "Autumn In New York" and "Section Blues".

Popcorn (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $8.99
Two versions of the same tune – both of them great! Frank Heppinstall's version of "Sweetheart" is taken at a slow-stepping pace – perfect for the waves of jazzy Hammond that begin the tune, and for Frank's round, robust baritone! Lonnie Sattin grooves a bit more on the flip – using lots of cool bongo lines underneath his vocals, which inflect the tune with an even more exotic sound!

Takehiro Honda — This Is Honda ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy .... $32.99
A great early album from Japanese pianist Takehiro Honda – one of the key jazz talents of Japan in the 70s, and a wonderfully lyrical keyboardist with a style that's right up there with the best American players of the 60s. Unlike later albums, which have Honda grooving with a bit more of an electric vibe, this one's a straight acoustic session – with Honda magically soloing out on relaxed versions of standards like "Round Midnight", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Secret Love", and "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise". The album's arranged with that wonderful spacey feel you get on some of these classic Japanese trio sets from the 70s – with impeccable sound throughout!

new Lightnin Hopkins — Lightnin Strikes ... CD
Vee Jay/Collectables, 1962. Used .... $13.99
Prime Vee Jay blues from the mighty Lightnin Hopkins – a real back-to-basics session that features more acoustic guitar than electric, in a style that's quite spare and down-home – a real difference from most of the other work of this type on the label! Often, Hopkins is singing along with just his guitar for backing – and the recording approach has an oddly echoey quality that amplifies the dark corners nicely. Electric numbers include "War Is Starting Again" and "Got Me A Louisiana Woman" – and other tracks include "Please Don't Quit Me", "Want To Come Home", "Rolling & Rolling", "Heavy Snow", "Coon Is Hard To Catch", and "Walkin Round In Circles".

Bobby Hutcherson — Linger Lane ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1975. New Copy .... $15.99
A beautiful later Blue Note album from vibist Bobby Hutcherson – a set recorded after his famous association with Harold Land, but with a groove that's wonderfully soulful in a whole different way! Bobby plays marimbas instead of vibes this time around, and he's working with his own arrangements for a slightly larger group – one that has some sweet fusion overtones, and these wonderful mellow funk inflections – so that even the mellow cuts have this warmly glowing, ultra-soulful sound that's mighty nice – a bit like some of the work from Gene Harris around the same time. Other players include Jerry Peters on Fender Rhodes, who also helped out with the arrangements – plus Harvey Mason on drums and Ernie Watts on reeds – and a few tracks feature sweet backing vocals from The Waters. The highlight here is a nice moody extended version of "People Make The World Go Round", but all cuts are great, and titles include "Silver Rondo", "Manzanita", "NTU", and his dark cover of "Theme From MASH".

Ikettes — Can't Sit Down 'Cos It Feels So Good! – The Complete Modern Recordings ... CD
Modern/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
Forget Tina Turner – we'll take Ike's backup singers, who sound great all the way through this collection! The Ikettes may never have had the fame of Tina, but back in the early and mid 60s, they were actually scoring a few more hits – and these recordings for the Modern label represent the group at their height – stepping firmly into righteous soul territory, shaking off any girl group cliches, and avoiding any of the stereotypes that could sometimes mar Ike Turner's projects. There's a really special sound here – one that's got bits of Motown, bits of R&B, and bits of Northern Soul – all wrapped together perfectly and delivered with sock-solid vocals from singers Robbie Montgomery, Jessie Smith, and Venetta Fields. The CD features all the material from the girls' full album for Modern – Soul The Hits – plus loads of other singles and even some unissued tracks! Titles include "Fine Fine Fine", "Camel Walk", "Sally Go Round The Roses", "Cheater", "You're Trying To Make Me Lose My Mind", "I'm So Thankful", "Don't Feel Sorry For Me", "Can't Sit Down Cos I Feel So Good", "Lonely For You", "Sha La La", "It's Been So Long", and "Nobody Loves Me".

Indigo Trio (Nicole Mitchell) — Anaya ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2009. New Copy .... $15.99
Some of the coolest work we've ever heard from Chicago flautist Nicole Mitchell – a really wonderful record that shows the full spectrum of her talents! The set's recorded with a trio that includes Hamid Drake on percussion and Harrison Bankhead on bass and cello – both players who can swing things inside one minute, then go freely outside the next! This approach is really important to the album's vibe – as some of the best tracks actually have a tight rhythmic pulse you might not find on other sessions from Mitchell – almost a bit funky at points, with a righteous groove – alongside other tracks that have a more open-ended, improvisatory feel. Bankhead's bass is especially nice – round and soulful throughout – and Mitchell plays flute, alto flute, and piccolo on the record. Titles include "Sho Ya Right", "Beloved's Reflection", "Affirmation Of The One", "Anaya With The Moon", "Wheatgrass", and "Song For Ma'at".

Deon Jackson — Deon Jackson – Golden Classics ... LP

This set features 12 of Deon's great soul work recorded with Ollie for the Detroit-based Carla label from the 60s – and they're picture-perfect tunes, with vocal phrasing that's right up there with the best male singers of the 60s, and a fresh approach to instrumentation that mixes Motown grooving with uptown soul arrangements. Deon's unique style works extremely well on all the tracks, from the super-hit "Love Makes The World Go Round", to other material like "Come Back Home", "You Said You Love Me", "I Need A Love Like Yours", "Ooh Baby", "Nursery Rhymes", "Love Takes A Long Time Growing" and "Hush Little Baby".

Michael Gregory Jackson — Clarity ... CD
ESP, 1976. New Copy .... $6.99 12.99
An overlooked early session from multi-instrumentalist Michael Gregory Jackson, recording here with a trio of great horn players in a wonderfully sensitive sound! The record's approach is a perfect illustration of the maturity on the New York avant scene in the late 70s – a real change from the more frenetic modes that ESP was recording a decade before, with some thoughtful, almost pensive points that really round out the record beautifully. Jackson plays mostly guitar, but also vocalizes a bit and plays marimba, percussion, wood flute and other instruments – and he's joined by Oliver Lake on flute and saxes, Wadada Leo Smith on trumpets, and David Murray on tenor sax. Some tracks get nice and bold, while others hold back wonderfully – and titles include "Oliver Lake", "Clarity", "A View Of This Life", "Prelueoionti" and "Iomi".
