Rosalia De SouzaBrasil Precisa Balancar ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy 2LP .... $15.99
The best work so far from Rosalia De Souza – a session that features production and guitar from bossa legend Roberto Menescal, and a sound that's deeper and even more classic than any of Rosalia's other work! Most of the instrumentation here is in an older acoustic mode – piano, percussion, and horns arranged by Menescal with that beautifully lighter than air style that he first pioneered in the 60s – an approach that lets Rosalia's vocals drift along on wonderfully gentle rhythms, and dominate the record even more than before. Given that the set's on Schema, there's still a nicely rhythmic component to most numbers – but overall, the record's a bold step forward even for the label – similar to the all-acoustic move made by Nicola Conte in his own recordings! Marcos Valle joins in on vocals on "Que Bandeira", and other tunes include "Onde Anda O Meu Amor", "Voz Da Lapa", "Jogo De Roda", "Rio De Janeiro", "Mar Amar", "Um Novo Dia", and "Vivo Sonhando".

Rosalia De SouzaD'Improvviso ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP .... $19.99
Beautiful bossa from Rosalia De Souza – and a set that's got a sweet little difference from some of her earlier Schema albums! This time around, the sound is warmly acoustic throughout – very jazz-based, and wrapped around Rosalia's vocals wonderfully – sometimes with a groove that's right in club jazz territory, other times with a mellower vibe that really fits the bossa spirit of the material! De Souza's vocals somehow sound even more beautiful in this setting – with soulful jazz inflections, and a maturity we might not have heard before – and the great trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso adds his talents to the core group for the session, working alongside tenor, trombone, piano, and lots of live percussion. Toco duets with Rosalia on a few tracks, and titles include "Banzo", "Candomble", "D'Improvviso", "Carolina Carol Bela", "Sambinha", "5 Dias De Carnaval", "Luiza Manequim", "Amanha", "Bossa 50", and "Samba Longe".

Rosalia De SouzaGarota Moderna (Italian version) ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2002. Used .... $7.99
Get ready to fall in love with a new bossa singer! The lovely Rosalia De Souza is a sweet-voiced vocalist with a sound that's very much in keeping with classic 60s work from Brazil – and she's got the added benefit of working here with new arrangements from the great Nicola Conte, the guiding light of the Schema Records label, and truly one of the best modern bossa talents around! Nicola arranged and produced the whole set – and overall, it feels a lot like his own work on the monumental Jet Sounds album, made all the better by Rosalia, whose great vocals add a lot of depth and soul to the music. A real killer – with club cuts, mellow cuts, jazzy cuts, and more – the kind of record that will make you shelve your Bebel Gilberto albums, keep Rosalia in heavy rotation for a long long time! Titles include "Canto De Ossanha", "Fica Mal Com Deus", "Mais", "As Gotas", "Maria Moita", "Bossa 31", "Tempo Futuro", and "Zona Sul".

Gaetano Partipilo — Besides – Songs From The Sixties ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2013. New Copy .... $19.99
Just a few of the songs here are from the 60s, and many of the rest are written by Gaetano Partipilo himself – and mixed with a few Brazilian numbers as well – all to round out a wonderfully rich sounding album that really lives up to the best Schema tradition! Instrumentation is mostly live jazz – played by Gaetano on alto sax, as well as Nicola Conte on guitar, Pietro Lusso on Fender Rhodes, Pasquale Bardaro on vibes, and Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet – but maybe best of all are the vocals, which shift a bit over the course of the record, and include raspy soul lines from MR Natural, and warmer female vocals from Alice Ricciardi, Heidi Vogel, and Rosalia De Souza. Half the tracks are instrumentals, and the mix of modes really makes the album great – never settled too far into one comfortable corner, and really taking the listener on a great journey overall! Titles include "Essa Mulher", "Se Voce Pensa", "Beyond The Days", "Jive Samba", "Right Now", "13 Death March", "Wall & Water", "Atras Da Porta", "The Sticks", "Moon Flower", and "Ocean Dance".

Various — Modern Sounds From Italy 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $11.99
A rich document of the growth in the Italian jazz scene in recent years – a great leap forward not just for individual musicians, but also for the Schema label as well! Schema first began in the 90s with a relatively programmed approach to jazz – a style that loved the classics, but often reworked them in modern production modes. Yet over the years, the company's really come to be a key home for real jazz and soulful sounds – moving past their original remix identity, to a point where they're arguably one of the most important jazz labels on the European scene! This nicely-priced batch of tracks is a great illustration of that growth – and features a few old Schema faves, mixed with newer artists who've flocked to the label in recent years – presented here in some unique remixes and other nice versions we haven't heard before. Titles include "Beyond The Days" by Gaetano Partiplio, "But Not For You" by Alessandro Maganini, "Hurt Me Bad" by Andrea Balducci, "Waltz For Emily" by Gerardo Frisina, "Banzo" by Rosalia De Souza, "Some Kind Of Blues (Grooveman Spot rmx)" by S-Tone Inc, "Welcome To My World (acoustic)" by Joyce Elaine Yuille, "Hear Us Now" by Christian Prommer's Drumlesson, "Alta Tensione 3am" by Alex Puddu, and "Good Life" by Timo Lassy.
