The crowning moment of genius from The Wake – one of the lesser-known groups in the Factory Records generation of the early 80s – but a real standout on a set like this! The feel here is quite similar to the best early moments from New Order – particularly the Temptation EP or Power Corruption & Lies – lots of spare bass-driven grooves, laced with keyboards, and topped with these dark, cold-toned vocals that are perfect for the post-punk ethos of the music! The production is wonderful, too – done by Chris
Nagle and the group, but with plenty of Martin Hannett elements – including lots of echo, and a great ear for winnowing down the electronics into these weird other-worldly sounds! Titles include "Judas", "Testament", "Patrol", "The Old Men", and "Heartburn".
