Robert GlasperBlack Radio ... CD
Blue Note, 2012. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
An amazing new chapter in the career of Robert Glasper – one of our favorite new jazz musicians of the past decade or so! This set features loads of Glasper's enigmatic piano lines – those fluid, elliptical sounds that are always filled with plenty of soul and imagination – matched here with guest vocals from a host of key talents – including Erykah Badu, Lalah Hathaway, Musiq Soulchild, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bilal, and Lupe Fiasco! The blend is surprisingly wonderful – not a sell out at all, but a way for Glaspar's music to reach a rich new level of expression – as the vocals really help the instrumental elements come alive – and unlock this side of Robert's potential that was always lurking in the background. One of the best musical moments we've heard from Blue Note in years – with titles that include "Always Shine", "Move Love", "Ah Yeah", "Lift Off", "Afro Blue", "Cherish The Day", "Black Radio", and "Letter To Hermione".

Robert GlasperBlack Radio Recovered – The Remix EP ... CD
Blue Note, 2012. Used .... $5.99
Sweet remixes from Robert Glasper's Black Radio album – all of them tunes that sound even more soulful than the originals! Given that the core record itself was a bit of a "remix" – Glasper's keyboards, funky beats, and hip contributions from a range of soul singers – the expansion of those sounds works perfectly here – stretching out the wonderful mix of modes through some sweet tracks that still leave plenty of room for Robert's keyboards. The set includes a totally great 9 minute "Dillalude #2", plus "Twice (?uestlove's Twice Baked rmx)", "Afro Blue (9th Wonder's blue light basement rmx with Phonte)", "Black Radio (Pete Rock rmx)", "Consequences Of Jealousy (Georgia Anne Muldrow's sassy geemix)", and "Letter To Hermione (Robert Glasper & Jewels rmx)".

Robert GlasperDouble Booked ... CD
Blue Note, 2009. Used .... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
Great work from Robert Glasper – one of our favorite new artists on Blue Note in years – a hell of a great piano player, with a fluid groove that just gets better and better with each new record! Glasper has a way of warming us up right away – sliding into a compelling piano line that holds us rapt, and really takes us on a journey – a bit like the best work of Bheki Mseleku back in the 90s, but with an undercurrent of funkier New York modes too! Half the record features Robert in trio format – playing both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – and the rest of the set moves into "experiment" tracks that bring in Casey Benjamin on saxes, plus some electric bass, and very funky drums from Chris Dave, who also plays on the trio numbers. Mos Def makes a vocal appearance on one track, and Bilal appears on two more – but our favorite grooves are always from Glasper's keyboards, especially his acoustic piano. Titles include "Downtime", "59 South", "Butterfly", "4Eva", "No Worries", "Yes I'm Country", and "Open Mind".

Bilal — Love Surreal ... CD
Purpose/E One, 2013. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
Tremendous work from Bilal – and further proof that his life on the indie side of the soul spectrum has been a very good thing! There's a crispness to the record that crackles right from the start – slight cosmic touches in the beats, but never too over the top – just enough to electrify the vocals and push Bilal past any sort of mainstream soul – and help him deliver the rich promise we first heard in his music so many years ago – but never found this fully formed during his major label stretch! There's some nice electric bits that percolate forth – moogy keys or sparkling samples – yet the vocals still have all the core warmth that's kept us coming back. Titles include "Astray", "Lost For Now", "West Side Girl", "Back To Love", "Longing & Waiting", and "Butterfly", which features a guest appearance from Robert Glasper!

Jose James — No Beginning No End ... CD
Blue Note, 2013. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A great new chapter in the career of Jose James – and a record that really seems to take his already-amazing vocals to a whole new level! In a relatively short career, Jose's already been turning a lot of heads with his work on other projects, his jazz-based recordings, and his debut for Gilles Peterson's album – yet this Blue Note set may well be his best record to date – and a set that definitely seems to find just the right place for his classic-styled approach to soul music vocals! Backings are mostly live, with a cool small funk group feel – but a bit more laidback too, almost with the jazzy touches you'd hear on some of Gil Scott-Heron's best 70s work, inflected with hipper changes with a 21st Century vibe. The whole thing's great – as important to Blue Note's move into soul as the Robert Glasper Experiment album – and titles include "Vanguard", "Heaven On The Ground", "Come To My Door", "Trouble", "Sword & Gun", and "It's All Over Your Body".

Kendrick Scott Oracle — Conviction ... CD
Concord, 2013. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
A bold step forward for drummer Kendrick Scott – a set that bristles with way more sharp changes and soulful undercurrents than any of his previous work – and which almost feels nicely in the same vein as some of the best recent artists to step forth on Blue Note! The record is definitely jazz, but has a lot more going on, too – similar to recent records from Robert Glasper – and in addition to work on drums, Scott also sings a bit, and plays some keyboards – alongside main lines on Fender Rhodes from Taylor Eigisti, whose shimmering style really adds a lot to the set! The group also features tenor and bass clarinet from John Ellis, guitar from Mike Moreno, and bass from Joe Sanders – and Alan Hampton sings lead vocals on a few tracks too. Titles include "Cycling Through Reality", "Be Water", "Apollo", "Serenity", "Memory Of Enchantment", "We Shall By Any Means", and "Liberty Or Death".

Various — Blue Note Now ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 2013. New Copy 2 CDs .... $24.99
Blue Note Now – and Blue Note Then – a cool little set that mixes contemporary grooves from the Blue Note catalog with some of the older gems that made the label great back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s! In truth, some of the contemporary cuts go back more than a few years – but come together nicely on CD1, to show the way the label's really grown in the past decade or two – moving into great soulful territory with tracks like "Little B's Poem" by Quasimode, "Freedom Dance" by Lionel Loueke, "It's All Over Your Body" by Jose James, "Black Radio" by Robert Glasper Experiment, "Soin Something" by Soulive, and "Time After Time" by Cassandra Wilson. CD2 features loads of older killers – including "Feel Like Makin Love" by Marlena Shaw, "Harlem River Drive" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Kathy" by Horace Silver, "Adams Apple" by Wayne Shorter, "Afrodisia" by Kenny Dorham, "Black Byrd" by Donald Byrd, and "Speedball" by Lee Morgan.

new Meshell Ndegeocello — World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams (limited edition) ... CD
Universal, 2007. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing departure in sound for Meshell Ndegeocello – a record that firmly delivers on the earlier promise of her Article 3 EP! As with that one, the sound here is quite different than the funky soul of Meshell's earliest work back in the 90s – an almost-experimental blend of fuzz, funk, fusion, dub, and soul – served up with lots of darker undertones, and a range of rhythms that are sometimes pretty intense! There's almost an early 80s arty sort of feel going on – a mode that takes us back to that great time in the post-punk, post-disco years when barriers between styles had broken down a bit – allowing artists to express themselves in really unique new ways. And in a world where so many Neo Soul artists seem in danger of a high convergence of modes and cliches, Meshell's found some tremendous new territory for herself – and has reminded us that she's still got some much sharper edges than her contemporaries. A host of great guests really help Meshell find her groove here – including Sy Smith on vocals, Oliver Lake on saxophone, James Newton on flute, Robert Glasper on piano, and Graham Haynes on cornet. Titles include "Haditha", "Evolution", "Virgo", "Lovely Lady", "The Sloganeer Paradise", "Elliptical", "Shirk", "Article 3", "Headline", "Michell Johnson", and "Solomon".

new Lionel Loueke — Heritage ... CD
Blue Note, 2012. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98 Out Of Stock
Complex grooves from guitarist Lionel Loueke – and a set that may well be his best so far, thanks to key help from Robert Glasper! Glasper co-produced the set, and also plays piano and Fender Rhodes as well – often with those great blocky rhythms we love so much in his own music – a style that really helps to re-shape Loueke's guitar lines, and give his music a whole new sort of vocals! Two tracks feature cool vocals from Gretchen Parlato – whose airy style is a great match for the spots in which Loueke sings as well – and titles include "Tribal Dance", "Freedom Dance", "Chardon", "Hope", "Goree", and "Bayyinah".

new Pietro Lussu Trio — Northern Lights ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2011. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A trio set by the pianist from Nicola Conte's group – and a wicked little record that both lives up to his previous efforts, and has us hearing Pietro in a whole new light as well! There's a bold rhythmic pulse to most of the numbers here – energy that's totally great – and which seems to come as much from Lussu's touch on the piano as it does the bass and drums – which are almost used equally, and wrapped up together – sort of in the manner of Robert Glasper's best music in recent years! Lussu plays both piano and Fender Rhodes – and other group members include Vincenzo Florio on bass and Marco Valeri on drums. Titles include "Freak E", "Dakota Song", "Afro-Centric", "She Knows The Ropes", and "Northern Lights".

new Various — Blue Note Trip 5 – Scrambled/Mashed – Mixed By Jazzanova ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1960s/1970s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2CD .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Jazzanova did such a great job on Blue Note Trip Vol 4, the label decided to have them back for one more journey – and this time around, they've expanded the range of their groove even more than before! In addition to the classic jazz from Blue Note that Jazzanova spun the last time, this collection also features a fair bit of soul, funk, and more – including some unusual bits from left field, all woven into a wonderful tapestry of music! A few of the tracks are even of recent origin, but they sit very nicely next to the older numbers – all stepping around in a spacious approach to the groove that shows that even when they're not making their own music, Jazzanova have ears to help expand other folks' tunes as well! Titles include "Warning (part 1)" by David Axelrod, "Three Is The Magic Number" by Bob Dorough, "Trying Hard To Look Inside" by The Waters, "Dedicated" by Digable Planets, "It's Just The Way I Feel" by Gene Dunlap, "Dindi" by Janet Lawson, "State Of Mind" by Raul Midon, "Chant" by Robert Glasper, "Sanfona" by Egberto Gismonti, "Hey Hey" by Andrew Hill, "Save The Children" by Marlena Shaw, "Open The Door" by Betty Carter, "Hurt So Bad" by Grant Green, "Montara (Madlib rmx)" by Bobby Hutcherson, "This Is Not America (interlude)" by David Bowie & Pat Metheny, "Secret Rendezvous" by Rene & Angela, "Mt Airy Groove" by Pieces Of A Dream, "Light Of The Universe" by Sun, and "I Love You" by Taste Of Honey.
