Riz OrtolaniContro 4 Bandiere ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99
A great later score from Riz Ortolani – and one that shows off the best talents for reaching out to time and place he developed in the 60s! The film's a WWII narrative – but Ortolani's music is often a lot more than you'd expect – occasionally scene-setting in its construction, yet with a more modern filmic aspect that carries a feel that's almost more epic than the images on the screen! The gentle theme is especially haunting – with some nice sensual overtones – and titles include "From Hell To Victory", "Accounts To Render", "Paris 1945", "Fabienne Theme", "Nicole Theme", "Hearts In Suspense", and "Toward The Victory".

Riz OrtolaniIl Mondo Di Riz Ortolani (4CD set) ... CD
WEA (Italy), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 4CD .... $33.99
A wonderful little package – way more than just a collection of soundtrack work by Italian maestro Riz Ortolani – and instead, a fully-fleshed look at his long career – with vocal, instrumental, and even some jazz titles too! The 4CD set comes in a book-styled package – with some great images from Ortolani's career in the middle, and notes in Italian – and the CDs break things up beautifully, to offer a rich look at the music in ways we hardly would have expected – showing lots of aspects of Riz's career we've never heard on CD! CD 1 features famous film themes – including "Sweet Dreams", "Africa Addion", "Yellow Rolls Royce", "The Great Dreamer", and many others. CD 2 features vocal and instrumental interpretations of Ortolani's compositions – with tracks by Jack Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Fabio Boltro, Aretha Franklin, Shirley Bassey, Erroll Garner, Johnny Mathis, Julie London, Matt Monro, and others. CD 3 is titled Unforgettable Love – and features loads of sweet 60s instrumentals, all with a soundtracky sort of feel – including "Magic Man", "Una Casa A Roma", "Lui Lui Lui", "My Blue", "Un Amore Cosi Tenero", "Easy Life", "Til Love Touches Your Life", and "True Confession". And CD 4 is the most striking of all – some rare jazz tracks swung strongly by Ortolani, most of them larger ensemble numbers – with titles that include "The Cold Nose", "St Francisco Railways", "Miami Beach", "Free Dixie", "Please Another Ball", "The Day Of Anger", and "Unna Sull'Altra".

Riz OrtolaniLa Faccia Violenta Di New York ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1972. New Copy .... $16.99
A much warmer soundtrack than you might guess from the "violenta" in the title – almost on a par with some of the best erotic film scores of the Italian scene in the early 70s! There's a great blend of jazzy lines and a few rootsier elements – particularly some South American guitar lines that seem mixed in with the jazz at times – and which appear during main themes, but recede during other more urban moments – leaving the rest of the music to sparkle in the best styles that Riz Ortolani was using at the time! A few cuts have a bit more punch, thanks to some electric funky bass at the bottom – making for a few great groovers – and there's really none of the stark, cold, or atonal sounds you might normally expect from an action score. CD features 19 tracks from the film, plus photos and notes in English and Italian!

Riz OrtolaniWar Goddess (Le Guerriere Dal Seno Nudo/Le Amazzoni) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Quartet (Italy), 1973. New Copy .... $14.99
A pretty great soundtrack from Riz Ortolani for the early 70s War Goddess flick, aka Le Guerriere Dal Seno Nudo, aka Le Amazzoni – and like the best of Ortotani's work for somewhat pulpy flicks of the era, it's got sweep, intimacy and all around strengths that go above and beyond! The sounds range from drum-led action with sweeping string tension and beyond. This great Quartet edition includes all the tracks from the original Japanese soundtrack album release and adds on a whopping 12 bonus tracks! 22 in all: "Le Amazzoni", "Montagne Blu", "Rampianto E Paura", "Montagne Blue", "La Lunga Attesa", "Echi E Trasparenze" and more.
(Limited edition of 500 copies.)

Riz OrtolaniWoman Times Seven ... CD
Mid 60s. New Copy .... Around May 15, 2013 (delayed)
This one's the score to an obscure comedy that starred Shirley Maclaine, Alan Arkin, Peter Sellers, and Michael Caine – and which was directed by Vittorio DeSica, working here in a far cry from The Bicycle Thief! Despite the goofy nature of the film, most of the tracks are in the range of Ortolani's more serious work – mostly orchestral and slower numbers. However, there's a few nice groovy tracks – nothing totally wonderful, but done here with a light 60s bounce that makes them stand out from the rest of the pack! Titles include "Three For A Dance", "Lover's Funeral", "They Told Me", "Marie Theresa", and "What To Do?"

Cinedelic/Amarkord (Italy), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
A killer CD – filled with funky tracks all picked by Cinedelic Records, with an ear towards the kinds of drums, basslines, and keyboards that have helped these older Italian soundtrack gems stay alive with a younger funky generation! Various — Django Unchained ... CD
Universal Republic, 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
Life! Liberty! Vengeance! A wild and very cool soundtrack for Tarantino's dual Blacksploitation/Spaghetti Western homage Django Unchained – featuring bits from some of our favorite Italian western composers mixed up with classic and contemporary funky soul and hip hop! It's the kind of soundtrack that could only happen for Quentin Tarantino – with rare and hard-to-find compositions by Luis Bacalov, Ennio Morricone, Riz Ortolani and Jerry Goldsmith on one hand – along with a few seemingly antithetical new compositions on the other – including a track penned by star Jamie Foxx for Rick Ross, a James Brown "Payback" remix with a vocal from the 2Pac archive, plus ones by Anthony Hamilton, John Legend and others! Last but not least, it's got some great bits of film dialogue by Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio. Titles include "Django" by Luis Bacalov, "The Braying Mule" by Ennio Morricone, "Nicaragua" by Jerry Goldsmith with Pat Metheny, "Day Of Anger" by Riz Ortolani, "Unchained (The Payback/Untouchable)" by James Brown with 2Pac, "Who Did That To You?" by John Legend, "100 Black Coffins" by Rick Ross, "Trinity (Titoli)" by Annibale E I Cantori Moderni and many more.

A few cuts have appeared on other compilations over the years, but there's plenty of new bits, and the package is one of the nicest that Plastic Records has ever done.
