new Johnny Griffin — Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1963. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
A moodier session than usual for Griff – but in a nice way – and one that's cut with Buddy Montgomery on vibes and piano, and handled in a laidback soul jazz mode that's a refreshing change from some of his sharper hardbop sides! Highlights include the extended original "Slow Burn", plus renditions of the classics "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" and "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set". The group's completed by Monk Montgomery on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and in a way, the album sort of feels like one of Monk and Buddy's Mastersounds sessions, with the added touch of a horn player!

new Coleman Hawkins — Hawk Flies High (Keepnews collection) ... CD
Riverside, 1957. New Copy .... $3.99 11.99 Out Of Stock
A key album in the reintroduction of Coleman Hawkins in the late 50s – recorded in a style that still bears a lot of traces of earlier years, but at a time when Hawk was being claimed as a key influence by a variety of younger modernists! The set's got a sense of freedom that's really surprising – especially on the longer numbers, which unfold with some playful instrumental twists that seem to come especially from trumpeter Idrees Sulieman and trombonist JJ Johnson – both of whom are great on the record. Other players include Hank Jones on piano, Barry Galbraith on guitar, and Oscar Pettiford on bass – and titles include "Juicy Fruit", "Think Deep", "Blue Lights", "Sanctity", and "Chant".
(CD case has a cutout hole.)

new Herbie Mann — Sultry Serenade ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1957. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
An early record by Herbie Mann, and one that offers a nice treat – bass clarinet! Although Herbie made his fame in the 60s with his Latiny flute playing, he was also a darn good bass clarinetist, and he plays both instruments on this rare early session from 1957. The bass clarinet doesn't dominate the whole recording, but when Herbie uses it, he gets an incedible tone – especially next to the baritone of Jack Nimitz, who also plays on the album. Titles include "Professor", "One Morning In May", "Sultry Serenade", and "When The Sun Comes Out".

new Thelonious Monk — Thelonius Himself ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1957. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
A classic outing of solo piano by Thelonious Monk – a format that wasn't used often, but which always made for some really compelling work! Monk in this mode is often different than the bolder leader of a trio or larger group – and there's a more introspective quality to the record that we really like – a sound that's sometimes tentative, then sometimes pushing forward with strength – almost more human than on some of his other efforts of the late 50s. John Coltrane makes a surprising appearance on the last track – "Monk's Mood" – and other titles include "April In Paris", "Ghost Of A Chance", "Functional", "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", "I Should Care", "'Round Midnight", and "All Alone".

new Johnny Hammond Smith — Black Coffee ... LP
Riverside, 1962. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
One of Johnny Hammond's first albums – and a cooking little live set that really has the organist working with some early raw power! The group's a trio, but they seem to burn differently than some of the other organ combos of the time – maybe with that fluid sensibility that Johnny brought to his keys, and which would later open up in even more famous ways. The core group features Eddie McFadden on guitar and Leo Stevens on drums – but they're joined by Seldon Powell on tenor for more than half the album, who really opens things up with his tremendous playing – and shows at an early state that Johnny Hammond always knows the right way to use a horn player. Titles include "Monterey Theme", "Far Away Places", "I Remember Clifford", "He's A Real Gone Guy", and "Rufus Toofus".
(Blue label Bill Grauer pressing with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has some wear, seam splitting, a sticker, a peeled spot, some tape, staining, and marker on the back.)

new Bobby Timmons — Sweet & Soulful Sounds/Born To Be Blue ... CD
Riverside/Universal (Germany), 1962/1963. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Pure piano magic from Bobby Timmons – a pair of great albums from his years at Riverside Records! First up is Sweet & Soulful Sounds – a wonderful mellow trio session from Bobby – done with a spare, relaxed approach that's a nice contrast to the recordings he was making for Prestige around the same time – but which still has the same deep, soulful approach to the piano that makes those records so great! Half a dozen trio numbers with Sam Jones and Roy McCurdy are rounded out with two piano solos, "God Bless The Child" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" – both of which present Bobby in an especially introspective mode, one you don't hear that often on record! Remaining trio tunes include "The Sweetest Sounds", "Turn Left", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Another Live One", "Alone Together", and "Why Was I Born". Born To Be Blue is one of Bobby Timmons' most obscure trio sessions from the early years – recorded at the tail end of the Riverside years, which is probably why the album disappeared so quickly! The set's in a similar format to some of Bobby's other records for Riverside – a trio set with either Sam Jones or Ron Carter on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – but it's different in that Bobby's a bit more introspective – "blue", if you will – working in less of the gutbucket soul jazz mode than before, and really hitting some lyrical magic on the keys! The album includes the original tunes "Know Not One", "Often Annie", and "The Sit In" – plus a great reading of Tom McIntosh's "With Malice Towards None".

new Nat Adderley — Work Song ... CD
Riverside, 1960. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
When it comes to soul jazz, you can't get any more classic than this! The title was one of the biggest jazz hits of the 60s – covered by countless other artists, but presented here in all its original brilliance in a group led by its composer, a young Nat Adderley! At the time of the record, Nat was making plenty big waves in the combo of brother Cannonball – but this set has him stepping out strongly as a leader – borrowing Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes from Cannon's group – and also adding in Wes Montgomery on guitar and additional bass and cello work from Keeter Betts and Percy Heath. The tracks are all tight as a drum – and the record features seminal versions of "Work Song" and "Sack O Woe" – as well as the numbers "Scrambled Eggs", "Pretty Memory", and "Fallout" – all great!
(CD case has a small cutout hole.)

new James Clay — Double Dose Of Soul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
One of the most revelatory albums ever cut by reedman James Clay – a player who's often lumped into the "hard blowing" camp because of his Texas roots, but one who emerges here with a great deal of sensitivity and imagination! The record features Clay playing both tenor and flute – clearly a "double dose of soul" – and on the latter instrument, he's got a really wonderful style that's a bit like Yusef Lateef, still hardbop and swinging, but touched with a sense of exoticism that really makes for a unique sound to the record. And even on tenor, Clay's got a looser, more introspective sound here – one that catches the mood set by the rest of the group – with Victor Feldman on vibes, Gene Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – plus a bit of extra cornet from Nat Adderley on a few tracks. The album has a good modal feel in parts, and a stronger soul jazz groove in others – and it's one of the great sets put together as part of the "Cannonball Presents" series for Riverside in the early 60s. Tracks include "Lost Tears", "Pockets", "New Delhi", and "Linda Serene". CD also features 2 bonus tracks!

new Benny Golson — Other Side Of Benny Golson ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
A smokin' hard bop side from a sort of amalgamation of players who played in and out of the Jazz Messengers around this time, but Philly Joe's sittin' in the drummers seat, so though the rhythms cook hard, that not quite as bombastic as Bu's. We've always loved Benny Golson, and though his playing was at it's most sublime in the Jazztet, he got to stretch out just a bit more and played with just a touch more fire in other contexts, like this session. Barry Harris is on piano, with Jymie Merritt and Philly Joe rounding out the rhythm section and Curtis Fuller joins Golson in the front line for a spry quintet setting. Six tracks: "Strut time", "Jubilation", "Symptoms", "Are You Real?", "Cry A Blue Tear" and "This Night".

new Rod Levitt Orchestra — Dynamic Sound Patterns Of The Rod Levitt Orchestra ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1964. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
"Dynamic" is right – as Rod's one of the hippest large group arrangers of his time! The album's a really wonderful record that features Rod leading an octet with a distinctly modern touch – almost building off the styles of Kenton groups of the 50s, but with more of the energetic twists and turns of some of the west coast groups of later years. Players are mostly lesser-known names – save for trumpeter Rolf Ericson – and the album features some really great tenor work by George Marge, who we only know from this record. Tracks are angular and fresh, but always nicely swinging – and titles include "Holler", "Jelly Man", "El General", "Upper Bay", and "Ah! Spain" – all by Levitt!

new Bobby Timmons — From The Bottom ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1964. New Copy .... $4.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
Mellow trio material by Bobby, recorded in the final moments of the Riverside label in its first incarnation, but not issued until 1970, when ABC took over the label's holdings. The set's notable in that Bobby plays vibes on 2 tracks, and also performs an unaccompanied piano solo on another. Backing is by the very sensitive Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb, and titles include "From The Bottom", "Moanin", "Samba Triste", and "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars".

new Cannonball Adderley — Portrait Of Cannonball (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Riverside (Japan), 1958. Used .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A jazzy portrait of Cannonball Adderley in his early soul jazz prime – oddly one that doesn't feature his regular quintet lineup, but which more than makes up for that lack with a batch of players that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Bill Evans on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums! Given the personnel, the record's almost kind of a transition from Cannon's brief time with Miles Davis into his tighter more soul-inflected group to come – and Evans' piano provides an especially spacious sensibility here, one that marks the time spent with Miles nicely. Titles include "Nardis", "A Little Taste", "Minority", and "Blue Funk". CD features 3 bonus tracks!

new Charlie Byrd — Latin Impressions ... LP
Riverside, Early 60s. Used .... $2.99 Out Of Stock
The Latin Impressions here are more Brazilian than Cuban – and maybe a bit Spanish, too – given the strong use of acoustic guitar from Charlie Byrd! The set's got a laidback, open feel – and Byrd's guitar work is mighty deft, yet without all the frills and flowers of some of the more dramatic, emotive players of the time – a great illustration of the huge shift that the early bossa guitar recordings had at a global level. Byrd was one of the first big American proponents of bossa, and you can definitely hear that influence at work here – amidst additional guitar from Gene Byrd, bass from Keter Betts, and drums from Bill Reichenbach. A few tunes feature Charlie on solo guitar with no backing – and titles include "O Pato", "Homage A Villa Lobos", "Bogota", "Vals", "Samba De Uma Nota So", "Amor Flamengo", and "Azul Tiple".

new Philly Joe Jones — Blues For Dracula ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
Arguably the best album that Philly Joe Jones ever cut as a leader – and a straight ahead set of soulful hardbop tunes played in the company of an excellent group! The set fits with with some of the super-hip soul jazz sides coming out on Riverside and Jazzland during the late 50s – and the sextet on the album features players who also made their mark for the label, like Julian Priester, Johnny Griffin, and Nat Adderley, who play here with Tommy Flanagan and Jimmy Garrison. The interplay between Garrison and Jones is worth the price of the record alone, and Jimmy pushes Philly into territory that's a bit more sophisticated than his usual groove. Tracks are all pretty long – and titles include "Blues For Dracula", "Ow", "Tune Up", and "Fiesta", written by the great Cal Massey!

new Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Chippie Hill, et — Great Blues Singers ... LP
Riverside, Late 20s. Used .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
One of the late 50s Jazz Archive LPs on Riverside – in which they dig through older sides, and issue the material in LP format with nice notes. Most of the material here is from the pivotal late 20s years, milestones in the formation of the American female blues singer! Also features work by Sara Martin, Trixie Smith, Mary Johnson, and Hociel Thomas.

new Albert Wynn & His Gutbucket Seven — Chicago – The Living Legends ... LP
Riverside, 1961. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
Later work from trombonist Albert Wynn – sides cut after a 33 year absence from the recording studio – as part of the excellent Chicago Living Legends series on Riverside! The work has a tight trad jazz feel – but with a bit more space than you might find for solo expression in some of Wynn's earlier, shorter sides – and players include Bill Martin on trumpet (and a bit of vocals), Darnell Howard on clarinet, and either Blind John Davis or Bus Moten on piano. Titles include "Bourbon Street", "How Long Blues", "Ice Cream", "Nobody's Sweetheart", and "In The Evening".

Cannonball Adderley — Jump For Joy ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Good+ .... $5.99
An interesting early side by Cannonball that captures him before he'd really found his voice – and when the folks at Mercury still didn't really know what to do with him. The record's a tightly arranged set of tracks from Duke Ellington's musical "Jump For Joy" – with arrangements by Bill Russo, and small group playing that includes Emmett Berry, Bill Evans, Barry Gabraith, Jimmy Cobb, and a small string section. The sound's actually quite haunting – and Cannon's alto solos remind us more of some of the best "with strings" soloing heard on Verve in the early 50s than they do his later soul jazz classics on Riverside or Capitol. That's ok with us, though – because the session's still got a lot to offer in that respect, and Cannonball handles the solos wonderfully! Titles include "Bli Blip", "Just Squeeze Me", "Nothin", and "The Tune Of The Hickory Stick".
(Blue label Mercury stereo pressing with deep groove.)

new Don Bikoff — Celestial Explosion ... CD
Keyboard/Tompkins Square, 1968. New Copy Gatefold .... $13.99 14.98
Amazing work from acoustic guitarist Don Bikoff – a 60s contemporary of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, but much more obscure than either of those legendary players! Yet Bikoff's got a very similar vibe – a style that's rooted in folk, but has broken way way past the genre – amazing acoustic guitar explorations that are filled with tones and timings that so many other players wouldn't discover until the 70s – yet still never be able to deliver with a freshness like this! The album's completely mesmerizing from the start – almost like the hypnotic air of Sandy Bull, without the hypnotic pyrotechnics – served up simply and sparely, in a way that leaves us breathless. Titles include "Today Has No Tomorrow", "Rindler's Metamorphosis", "The Ellipses Of Your Mind", "Bathing Prohibited In The River Styx", and "Riverside Park Blues".

Black Mighty Wax — We The Family ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99
It's been quite a few years since we last heard from Black Mighty Wax – but it's definitely been well worth the wait – as these guys are deeper and more sophisticated than ever, with a range of sounds we never would have expected on the last release! Soul styles are still very much at the front of their mix – and the record features vocals from a range of great singers who include Sarah Jane Morris, Neffa, Ricardo Phillips, Lily Latuheru, Silvia Donati, and others – set to grooves that still sparkle with the same keyboard elements that have always made Black Mighty great – but which also have more acoustic touches from time to time, and a rhythmic variation that goes way past the usual Irma groove! Titles include "Shake Your Heart", "We The Family", "Let Me Go", "Pull Down", "Follow That Fellow", "Riverside", and "Nightdriver" – and the CD features a few bonus remixes too!

Charlie Haden/Hank Jones — Come Sunday ... CD
EmArcy, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 16.98
Charlie Haden and Hank Jones reunite as a duo – working through a set of songs with spiritual sources, in ways that really seem to unlock the warmest elements of both players! Jones is no stranger to this sort of mode, especially in later years – and his gentle, spacious touch on the keys of the piano is a real change from some of the heavier modes you might have heard when these tunes were played along with a choir. But the real revelation is possibly Haden – who hits some of his most evocative, sentimental sounds in years – a great reminder of the ways that he could always paint such a pretty picture with his basslines when he wanted. Titles include "Deep River", "The Old Rugged Cross", "Down By The Riverside", "Going Home", "Blessed Assurance", "Come Sunday", and "Nearer My God To Thee".

Graham Marsh & Glyn Callingham — Coast to Coast Album Covers – Classic Record Art From New York To LA (hardcover) ... Book
Collins & Brown, 2011. New Copy .... $13.99 19.95
A beautiful set of jazz album cover art from the 50s and 60s – hardcover, in full color, and packed with hundreds of classic images! The title's a reflection of the strong scope of material – work from both the east and west coast scenes, pulled from labels like Prestige, Atlantic, Riverside, Pacific Jazz, and Contemporary – all known for their great sense of cover design – as well as amazing music! In many cases, the covers are grouped together to show thematic elements from a specific designer – and in others, they show the different labels each reflecting the others with some very cool trends for representation. Images are all shot from original copies of LPs – including some UK issues which belie the British origins of the compilers (also known for their famous Blue Note volume) – and the hefty book is 10" square, which will nestle nicely next to your collection of rare early jazz albums! 222 pages, hardcover, in full color.

Blue Mitchell — Bring It Home To Me ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good- .... $28.99
Genius work from trumpeter Blue Mitchell – one of his most solid sides as a leader from the 60s, and a well-deserved treasure in the Blue Note catalog! The album's quite different than the straight soul jazz of Blue's early days on Riverside – or the more arranged dates of the late 60s – and it features him moving in a soulful, lyrical, modal style – quite similar to Horace Silver in conception, but with a fresh execution that's mighty nice – and which marks Mitchell as one of the fresher trumpet voices of his generation! The whole group's great, too – and the lineup includes Junior Cook on tenor, Blue's old bandmate from Horace Silver's group – plus Harold Mabern on piano, who really helps shape the sound of the record, Gene Taylor on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Tracks include gems from Mitchell, Jimmy Heath, and Tom McIntosh – titles that include "Bring It Home To Me", "Blues 3 For 1", "Port Rico Rock", and "Ginger Bread Boy".

Sonny Rollins — Way Out West ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1957. Used .... $5.99
A classic set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne! Despite Rollins' silly look on the cover, and the album's overall "western" theme, the session's a brilliant one – right up there with Sonny's strongest trio sides of the late 50s, and a key link in a string of excellent recordings for Blue Note, Prestige, and Riverside! The lack of a piano really opens up the style of the set – letting Sonny explore freely on his solos, while Brown's bass and Manne's drums do more than enough to keep the rhythms going on their own. Solos aren't as "out" as on the Village Vanguard sessions, but certainly every bit as inspired – and titles include "I'm An Old Cowhand", "Solitude", "Come, Gone", "Way Out West", and "Wagon Wheels". CD features 3 bonus tracks!

Sonny Stitt — Legends Of Acid Jazz – Turn It On/Black Vibrations ... CD
Prestige, 1971. New Copy .... $3.99 18.99
2 classic Stitt albums back to back – Turn It On and Black Vibrations, both recorded during his early 70s funk years at Prestige! Turn It On is very firmly the funky Prestige sound of the early 70s – complete with Idris Muhammad on drums, organ by Leon Spencer, guitar by Melvin Sparks, and trumpet by Virgil Jones. After years of noodling around on the Varitone, never quite hitting his right moment, Stitt breaks out nicely in the company of these hot young funky players. The record's got a few mellow moments that point towards his older ballad style, but the funky numbers are the best. Titles include "Turn It On", "The BBQ Man", and "Miss Riverside". On Black Vibrations, Sonny Stitt joins up with a tight group of prime Prestige funky players – like Idris Muhammad, Leon Spencer, Melvin Sparks, and Virgil Jones – for a sound that's much funkier than some of his other records for the label. The set's got a good set of modern funk tracks, with all the quality moments you'd expect from these top-notch players. Titles include "Goin' To DC", "Calling Card", "Them Funky Changes", and "Black Vibrations".

new Wes Montgomery — So Much Guitar! (with bonus tracks) ... CD
1961. New Copy .... Around July 23, 2013
So much guitar – but never too much, given that Wes was the real master of sound and space, even at this early point in his career! The album's one that tries to break Montgomery from some of his smaller combo albums for Riverside, and pair him with a few bigger names – Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Lex Humphries on drums, and Ray Barretto on congas – who gives the album that bottom "kick" sort of groove that was used often on soul jazz sessions from the time. The tune's lope around leanly and cleanly, giving plenty of focus on Wes' work on guitar – and titles include "Twisted Blues", "Repetition", "Somethin' Like Bags", and "While We're Young", which is a solo track by Wes.

Bud Powell — Portrait Of Thelonious ... CD
1961. New Copy .... Around September 11, 2013
Quite an interesting session from Bud Powell – a tribute to Thelonious Monk, recorded in Paris in 1961, but not issued until 1965, shortly before his death. Cannonball Adderley was the producer on the session, and it's got the same sort of groundbreaking approach as some of the other Cannonball-produced albums for Riverside from the same stretch – a bit more farther reaching than the players' work in an ordinary setting. Powell's take on the Monk sound is a very unusual one – a bit more fragile and tentative than Monk's own interpretations of the material, but performed with an equal commitment to a modern sound overall. Backing is from Kenny Clarke on drums and Pierre Michelot on bass – and titles include "No Name Blues", "Ruby My Dear", "Off Minor", "Squatty", and "Thelonious".

new Ray Barretto — Carnaval (Latino!/Pachanga With Barretto) ... CD
Fantasy, 1961/1962. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two of Ray Barretto's earliest albums, both recorded for the Riverside label at the start of his career! Latino has an approach to Latin jazz that's certainly informed by the charanga sound of the New York scene in the early 60s – but one that's also opened up a bit more to new ideas – bits of bossa nova, heavy percussion, and some odd instrumental twists that really make the album sparkle! There's some haunting violin work on one track, a bit of odd organ on another, and a very playful mix of flute, piano, and percussion throughout. The great Jose Combo Silva plays tenor on the date – and other players include Jose Canoura on flute, Alfredito Valdez on piano, and El Negro Vivar on trumpet. Ray's on congas, bongos, and timbales – and titles include "Sugar's Delight", "Carnaval", "Descarga La Moderna", "El Negro Y Ray", and "Cocinando Suave". Pachanga With Barretto is a very offbeat little set from Ray – a record that takes the standard pachanga groove of the time, and nicely turns it on its ear with a host of jazzy touches! Hector Rivera wrote all the tracks, and also did most of the arrangements – and the record's got a really playful feel that's far more than just straight Latin for the crowds at the club. Flute and violin are often used in slightly unusual ways – and they're mixed with harder lines on tenor from Frank Mercado and trumpet from El Negro Vivar. Other players include Ray Mantilla on timbales, Jose Canoura on flute, and Willie Rodriguez on percussion – and titles include "Oye Heck", "Pachanga Suavecito", "Pachanga Para Bailar", "Barretto En La Tumbadora", "Pachanga Oriental", and "Ponte Dura".

Delmark, 2013. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lurrie Bell just seems to get better and better with age – taking on a depth of tone in his guitar work that definitely marks his long years on the Chicago scene! This set's got Lurrie in mostly a small combo mode – singing and playing guitar with just a bit of organ, bass, and drums – plus additional horns and harmonica on a few other cuts. Titles include "Blues In My Soul", "My Little Machine", "South Side To Riverside", "If It's Too Late", and "Blues Never Die".

new Bill Evans — Green Dolphin Street ... CD
Milestone, 1959/1962. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lost Bill Evans material from his tremendous early run on Riverside Records – sessions recorded in 1959, but unreleased to the public for many years! The core of the record features Evans working with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones both rhythm players that Bill interacted with while working in the Miles Davis group, and a strongly-voiced team to echo the sense of space and timing that was the particular Evans touch in the early days. Why these tracks never came out is a real mystery to us – because Bill's still very much at the top of his game, despite having not liked the material at the time of recording – and the Chambers/Jones rhythm section give the tunes a very solid focus throughout. Titles include "You & The Night & The Music", "My Heart Stood Still", "On Green Dolphin Street", "How Am I To Know", and 2 takes of "Woody N You". Added to that number is a really surprising bonus – a 1962 recording of "Loose Bloose", done with Jim Hall on guitar and Zoot Soms on alto – making for one of those rare non-trio dates by Evans!

new Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery — Jimmy & Wes – The Dynamic Duo ... CD
Verve/Polygram, 1966. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent meeting between 2 mighty talents who rarely recorded together! Oliver Nelson did the arrangements and leads a big band, but the real focus is on Jimmy and Wes' solos, which are given a lot of room to roam in long tracks like "James & Wes", "Night Train", and "Down By The Riverside". Nice hard playing from Jimmy, with that great tone that he was getting in the mid 60's, and lots of very clean Hammond lines on his solos.

new Johnny Griffin — Griff 'N Bags ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1967/1969/1998. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Lost European jazz recordings from the vaults of producer Gigi Campi – and a stellar batch of non-US material with Johnny Griffin at the lead – working in the company of Clarke/Boland compatriots who include Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Idrees Sulieman, and Milt Jackson! Despite the "Bags" in the title, Milt's only on a few tracks – but that's fine with us, because Johnny Griffin is the main attraction – and the material is good small group sides with Griff soloing and trading lines with players like Sulieman and Bailey, or with some of the other players on their own. The recordings are different than the usual breed of Johnny Griffin European recordings – most of which have him soloing with a piano quartet on extended tracks. On this release, most of the tracks are short, hard, and very nicely swinging with a good hard bop groove – as with the best of Griffin's Riverside and Blue Note recordings. Kenny Clarke's on drums on nearly all the material, and he pulls out his bop chops to drive Griff's hard solos as fast as he can. The set's a great batch of work, with excellent notes and photos, and some great playing all around. Cuts include "Gamal Sady 'n Em", "Foot Patting", "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz", "Blues For K", "Muvaffak's Pad", "The Girl & The Turk", and "Gyson's Bag". 16 cuts in all, and none of them are from the Griffin/Davis LP on MPS (just in case you thought to ask!)

new Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane — Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used .... $2.99 Out Of Stock
A rare gem of a session – live material recorded by the Voice Of America in 1957, and featuring a unique Thelonious Monk quartet with John Coltrane on tenor! The performance is contemporaneous with Coltrane's appearance on the legendary Monk's Music album for Riverside – and the overall feel here is a bit similar to that classic. Yet the live setting also allows Coltrane to open up and improvise a lot more – stretching out in fluid lines that are often a strong contrast to the more angular notes coming out of Monk's piano. Rhythm is by the team of Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass and Shadow Wilson on drums – and titles are broken up into an "early show" and "late show" – 9 numbers in all that include "Bye-ya", "Epistrophy", "Nutty", "Crepuscule With Nellie", "Monk's Mood", and "Evidence".
(BMG music club pressing.)

new Jimmy Heath — Peer Pleasure (with bonus track) ... CD
Landmark, 1987. New Copy .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
The title's a bit obtuse, but the music is warm and soulful throughout – a really tremendous session that carries on the strong legacy of solo work that Jimmy Heath was doing in the 70s! The feel here is a lot like some of Heath's dates for the Muse or Xanadu labels – and Jimmy's working here with a great rhythm section that includes Larry Willis on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Akira Tana on drums – players who provide a very soulful grounding for the set. Heath blows alto, tenor, and soprano sax – and remaining players include Tom Williams on trumpet and Tony Purrone on guitar. The groove is in a classic Prestige/Riverside mode – not hard hardbop, but soulful, with touches of post-Coltrane blowing, and the mix of lyricism and soul jazz that Heath's always brought to his best work. Titles include "Trane Connections", "Forever Sonny", "You Can See", "I Waited For You", and "Song For Ben Webster". CD features the bonus track "Is That So".

new Mel Rhyne Sextet — Organ-izing ... CD
Jazzland/OJC, 1960. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
An excellent bit of soul jazz – completely rare in the original pressing, and one of the few early albums ever cut by organist Melvin Rhyne! Rhyne first came to prominence as the organist with Wes Montgomery – and he hailed from Montgomery's hometown of Indianapolis, and had the distinction of appearing on an early trio album with Wes. This rare side as a leader has Rhyne heading up an all-star cast that includes Blue Mitchell, Johnny Griffin, Andy Simpkins, and Albert Tootie Heath – plus fellow Indiana resident Gene Harris, who plays piano on the session, which makes for a very unusual combination next to the organ! The tracks are all quite long – and the session's a lot more down-and-dirty than the usual work that was recorded on the Jazzland and Riverside labels, stretching out at an open-ended soul jazz pace that was much more the territory of Prestige Records. Tracks include "Blue Farouq", "Shoo Shoo Baby", and "Barefoot Sunday Blues".

new Masao Yagi — Masao Yagi Plays Thelonious Monk ... CD
King (Japan), 1960. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
A great Japanese take on the sound of Thelonious Monk at the end of the 50s – one that's led by pianist Masao Yagi, and which features some of the same dynamic horn interplay as Monk's best work on Riverside! Yagi's got a really great group here – with Sadao Watanabe on alto sax and Akira Nakano on trumpet – both stepping out in sharp-edged, angular lines at the front of the tunes – then soaring out in beautifully expressive solos on their own. Yagi's piano is strong too – surprisingly sensitive at times – and the record does a great job of nodding towards the original without clearly aping it too much. Titles include "Off Minor", "Evidence", "Monk's Mood", "Straight No Chaser", and "Blue Monk".

new Veronica Ferreiro — Laio ... CD
Veronica Ferreiro, 2011. New Copy .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
A soul set from Spain – a really sweet debut from Veronica Ferreiro, a singer with depth to rival the best of the American underground! There's a surprisingly non-commercial feel to the music – nicely laidback production, and strong traces of jazz that really make the backings sparkle – and match the great range that Veronica brings to her music – making for a blend that's a lot like some of our favorite Neo Soul albums from the early years of the genre in the US! Lyrics are partly Spanish, partly English – and on the latter, Ferreiro comes across with a sensitive quality that could well have her reaching a wider audience over the next few years. Titles include "Floating Lovers", "Non Quero Crer", "Riverside", "Laio", and "Please Don't Fall In Love".
