Each of the artists had their own way of mixing stricture and improvisation – Mayer in his experiments with Indian music, Guy in his embrace of free jazz, Gibbs in the way he mixed rock influences with avant jazz – a legacy that continues to be hugely influential, all these many years later! A beautiful Japanese publication, one that looks at the long legacy of bars and coffee shops that focus on presenting quality jazz vinyl with high end sound systems – really amazing spots that are presented here in a special edition with full text in English! As with other issues of the magazine, this one looks at some key spots in Tokyo and beyond – focusing on the history and identity of each, and really getting at the way the owners use their passion for jazz to create a unique space to listen, relax, chat, and enjoy the evening. A rich overview of the shift in art that took place in the UK from the mid 60s through the late 70s – that moment of new practice and unusual forms that was quickly known as conceptual art, thanks to its mix of theory, politics, and culture! The book offers up a history of the movement, along with many images of artworks – done in conjunction with an exhibit at the Tate in London, from which most of the works were taken. MC Buddah Monk was a childhood friend of Ol Dirty Bastard, and spent a fair bit of time right alongside him during the glory days of the Wu-Tang Clan – so he's got a pretty great perspective of Dirty's life and music – even though his story is somewhat personal overall! Writer Mickey Hess helps give shape to Buddha's memories, and the book may not be one of the most authoritative reads on Ol Dirty Bastard, but it's certainly one of the more entertaining! 192 pages, softcover, with some color images. A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single!
