new Richie HavensStonehenge ... LP
Stormy Forest, 1970. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stone classic from Richie Havens – and we don't just mean that because of the title and cover! The record's got Richie really taking his music to the next level – moving past straighter folk lines, and hitting a more sophisticated sound that's not too far from territory Terry Callier was exploring at Cadet at the time! There's strings mixed in with the acoustic guitar and percussion on most numbers – used a bit less majestically than Callier's work with Charles Stepney, but still in ways that push Havens' music nicely past straighter folk modes. Richie's vocals are still beautifully warm and raspy – filled with life and honest energy – and although most tracks on the record are originals, the album also features a nice cover of "I Started A Joke". Other tracks include "Minstrel From Gaul", "Open Our Eyes", "Ring Around The Moon", "It's All Over Now Baby Blue", "Prayer", and "There's A Hole In The Future".

new Richie Havens, Tony Joe White, Lance Le Gault — Catch My Soul ... LP
Metromedia, 1973. Used Gatefold .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very weird soundtrack to this equally weird film that mixes Shakespeare and religion, and which was directed by Patrick McGoohan! Most tracks have a funky folksy style – with lots of guitar, mixed acoustic and electric, as you'd expect to hear in the work of White or Havens. There are a few nice slightly funky moments with a good acoustic guitar in the front – but the best part of the tracks are the introductions, and they're generally made stupid by the vocals. Titles include "Catch My Soul (part 3)", "Chug A Lug", "Run Shaker Life", and "Put Out The Light".
(Original textured cover, with insert! Cover has a promo imprint, some tape and peeling on the spine, and a bit of pen on back.)

new Exuma — Exuma ... CD
Mercury/Repertoire (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A landmark first album from Exuma – one of a handful of early 70s classics that really worked hard to break down musical genres! At some level, the set's got a Caribbean feel, but at others it's quite funky – a great mix of Exuma's Bahamian roots and some of the headier sounds that Mercury Records was serving up at the time – all hinted at strongly by the rootsy psychedelia of the cover! And given Exuma's appeal to wider audiences, it's almost tempting to think of him as sort of a tripped-out Richie Havens – with similar acoustic elements, yet a lot more percussion and groove in the end. Titles include "Séance In The Sixth Fret", "You Don't Know What's Going On", "The Vision", "Mamma Loi Papa Loi", and "Dambala".
