Richard Groove HolmesNew Groove (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Groove Merchant/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy .... $29.99
Funky funky Groove Holmes – one of his tightest albums ever! The set's a monumental batch of organ jazz groovers – recorded with some larger backings from Manny Albam, and a super-dope, super-funk sort of 70s feel that's really outta site! The tracks are lean and very rhythmically oriented – all instruments grooving very strictly on the beat, except for Groove's wailing Hammond – which takes off over the top in some fierce musical flights! Bernard Purdie chops up some wicked drums on the set, and titles include "Red Onion", "Meditation", "Good Vibrations", "Chu Chu", and the solid groover "You've Got it Bad".

Richard Groove HolmesSoul Message ... LP
Prestige, 1965. Very Good+ .... $5.99
A key album in the career of Richard Groove Holmes – his first session ever for Prestige Records, and the one that yielded the monster crossover hit version of "Misty"! The sound here is much leaner and cleaner than Groove in his Pacific Jazz years – a tight trio approach that brings plenty focus on Holmes' soaring style on the Hammond – that way of holding a note that made his organ work instantly recognizable in the 60s, in a groove that really set the tone for plenty of spacious keyboard work to come from others who would cop his style! Players include Gene Edwards on guitar and Jimmie Smith on drums – but Groove's organ dominates the records, and clearly sets the tone for the rhythm with his amazing sense of space and timing! Titles include a 5 minute version of Groove's "Misty", plus "Groove's Groove", "Song For My Father", and "Soul Message".
(Blue label pressing.)

new Richard Groove HolmesThat Healin' Feelin' ... LP
Prestige, 1968. Very Good .... $8.99
Great stuff from Groove – a tight, no-nonsense set of hard grooves featuring a quartet that includes Rusty Bryant, Billy Butler, and Herbie Lovelle. There's a strong bottom sound to the session – picking up from the Misty days, when Groove learned that he could take just about any track, and make it groove like a mofo! Because of this, the album's selections – "That Healin Feelin", "Irene Court", "Castle Rock", and "On a Clear Day" – all sound night and tight, as Groove would have delivered the tunes playing before one of his many well-attended audiences at the time!
(Purple label pressing. Cover has some edge wear, and a split on the bottom seam.)

new Richard Groove HolmesWelcome Home ... LP
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold .... $3.99
Groovy set of soul jazz organ tracks that has Groove playing with a large-ish group that includes George Freeman, Tom Scott, Anthony Ortega, Wilton Felder, and Paul Humphrey. The set's not totally hard and funky, but it's got a nice soulful swinging groove, with a tight LA 60s sound to it. Includes a nice version of "Madison Time", plus "Groovin Time", "Oklahoma Toad", "Upward Bound", and "The Odd Couple".

Jimmy McGriff & Richard Groove HolmesGiants Of The Organ In Concert ... LP
Groove Merchant, 1973. Very Good 2LP Gatefold .... $8.99
Groove Holmes and Jimmy McGriff go head to head in this double-organ extravaganza! The set was recorded live in Boston in 1973, and it features some of the most furiously funky live organ grooving you'll find this side of Root Down – and a whole lot of super tight jazz jamming! The group's got three guitarists, one of whom is the great O'Donel Levy, plus Mike Moss on drums and Kwasi Jayourba percussion. Most of the tracks are nice and long, with lots of solo space, and titles include opening funky monster "The Preacher's Tune", plus "Beans", "Chopper", "Boston Whaler", "Mozambique" and "Brown Bread".
(Cover has a cutout hole, edge wear, and some splitting on the bottom seam.)

new Richard Groove HolmesAmerican Pie ... LP
Groove Merchant, Early 70s. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tasty small group work from Groove – with Mr Holmes himself on organ, and the great Larry Willis on electric piano – coming up with a twin electric organ/piano sound that's similar to the one that Groove used on his Comin On Home LP for Blue Note. The difference here is that things aren't as funky as on the Blue Note record – more in the style of the mellow soul of some of the other Groove Merchant albums, with a sweet use of percussion and guitar next to the keys – in a nice laidback kind of groove! Titles are mostly covers – like "St Thomas", "American Pie", and "Who Can I Turn To" – but the lineup also includes two Holmes originals, "Catherine" and the jazzy "Fingers", which is a nice little cut!
(Cover has two cutout holes, and some light wear.)

new Jimmy McGriff & Richard Groove HolmesGiants Of The Organ Come Together ... LP
Groove Merchant, 1973. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Twin organs back to back – and a heck of a hard-wailing set from Groove Holmes and Jimmy McGriff! The album cooks from the very first note – and features long tunes that open up with the same sort of solo-heavy approach that you'd get on Holmes' Prestige albums of the 60s – very stretched out, in a way that offers the keyboardists no cover at all, and forces them to keep thinking on their feet to come up with great notes! Bernard Purdie plays some nicely tight drums on the set, and guitar is by George Freeman and O'Donel Levy – both of whom add some nice superdope touches to the set! A winner all the way through, with great solos – and titles that include "Licks A Plenty", "The Squirrel", and "Finger Lickin' Good".
(Cover has some light wear, a cutout hole and a small name in pen on the front.)

new Richard Groove HolmesGroovin With Groove (aka New Groove – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Groove Merchant/LRC, Early 70s. New Copy .... $5.99 7.99 Out Of Stock
And like most LRC titles, the dates and information on this one are a bit suspect – because the CD definitely contains the 7 tracks from the New Groove album – but also features 5 more bonus tunes too – including "Go Away Little Girl", "Young & Foolish", "It's Impossible", "It's Gonna Take Some Time", and "Groove's Groove". And note that the cover lists the dates for the sessions as 1978 and 1979, but the music is definitely the same as that on Groove's early 70s album New Groove.

new Richard Groove HolmesHot Tat ... CD
Muse, 1989. New Copy .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
One of the last albums that Richard Groove Holmes ever recorded – but a surprisingly strong little set, and one that shows that he never stopped hitting the Hammond hard, even in the later years of his life! The record's got a depth of feeling that goes way beyond the dated, cheesy album on the cover – almost a classic organ groove, produced by Houston Person for the session – who's also prominently featured on tenor for the date. Other players include Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, Bad Bascomb on bass, and Greg Bandy on drums – plus Ralph Dorsey on congas and a bit of added percussion. The largeish group still manages to sound nice and lean – and although there's a few bassline moments that belie the date of the record, most of the material has a very classic soul jazz sound. Titles include "Renee", "Love Letters", "I Love Your Smile", "Hot Tat", "I Gotta Go", and "Second Time Around".

new Richard Groove HolmesLegends Of Acid Jazz – The Groover/That Healin Feelin ... CD
Prestige, 1968. Used .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
2 late 60s sides by Groove Holmes – back to back on one CD! The Groover is a nice one from the days when Groove was playing with guitarist George Freeman! The core of the tracks on here feature a trio of Holmes, Freeman, and drummer Billy Jackson – and the trio knows how to cook nice and nicely, especially on the original cut "The Walrus", a groovy number written by Freeman, with his usual off-kilter approach. Other cuts include "My Scenery", "Blue Moon", and "I'll Remember April". That Healin Feelin is a tight, no-nonsense set of hard grooves featuring a quartet that includes Rusty Bryant, Billy Butler, and Herbie Lovelle. There's a strong bottom sound to the session – picking up from the Misty days, when Groove learned that he could take just about any track, and make it groove like a mofo! new Richard Groove Holmes & Les McCann — Somethin' Special ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
Two of LA's leading soul jazz luminaries – playing head to head in an interesting session that mixes lines on piano and organ! McCann gives the set a good rollicking rhythm, and Holmes' increasing skill on the Hammond makes the set blow out over the top – and the pair get backing by Joe Pass on guitar, Ron Jefferson on drums, and the enigmatic Joe Splink on tenor, who we're sure is a more famous player, working here uncredited due to contract restrictions. The tracks are all originals by Les –a nd titles include "Black Groove", "Me & Groove", "Comin Through The Apple", "Carma", and "Somethin Special", which grooves for over 9 minutes!
(Blue & silver label Pacific Jazz pressing. Cover has a split top and bottom seams, light wear, and a wrinkle across the front.)

new Various — Wonder Funk – Jazz Funk Plays Stevie Wonder ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $29.99 Out Of Stock
Groovy takes on famous Stevie Wonder Tunes – all of them jazz-based, and played by some of the funkiest artists of the early 70s underground! The set's heavy on Hammond, Fender Rhodes, riffing guitar, and soulful sax – and cuts come from some of the best indie labels of the time – Groove Merchant, Mainstream, and even smaller imprints – all of whom were home to some pretty hip cats back in the day! The package has a sweet edge that really lives up to the high quality of the Return Of Jazz Funk series on P-Vine – kind of a summation of all the greatness the label's done in recent years, wrapped around the compositions of Stevie Wonder for extra impact. Titles include "Music Talk" by Paul Humphrey, "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Pete Yellin, "Superstition" by Charles Kynard, "My Cherie Amour" by Cal Green, "You've Got It Bad Girl" by Richard Groove Holmes, "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Tyrone Washington, "All In Love Is Fair" by Bubbha Thomas & The Lightmen, and "Super Woman" by O'Donel Levy.
