Perhaps Donny Hathaway's greatest album from the 70s, and certainly the one with the most amazing arrangements! The record was Donny's last studio session, and it's got him working at a level that's far advanced from even his groundbreaking earlier work – using complicated rhythms and sophisticated string passages – but also throwing in some killer jazzy bits that make for some of his funkiest work ever! The liner notes have Donny showing off his musical training in evaluations of the song structures, but the music alone should be enough to convince you this one is great! Includes "The Slums", a funky rollicking tune that is sort of a follow-up to "The Ghetto"; "Valdez In The Country", a totally catchy instrumental with loads of electric piano, and a very Bob James-esque sound; the jaunty "Flying Easy"; and the spiritual soul cuts "Someday We'll All be Free" and "I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry (parts 1 & 2)".

What can we say? This is one of the greatest albums of all time – and it's made even better through the addition of a bunch of previously unissued tracks! The record's got a sound that's completely unique – as crack LA garage punk rock meets Hollywood baroque production, and the result is an amazing bit of loud guitar noise backed by strings and horns, all graced by the godlike vocals of the great Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is a milestone in rock – an incredibly bleak document about insanity, escape, and the coming revolution that never happened. Think of all the best moments of Wild In The Streets, Zabriske Point, and Invocation of My Demon Brother rolled into one – and you'll only have a tiny slice of the picture! A record that will haunt us until the day we die – filled with incredible songs like "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", "Red Telephone", and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark & Hilldale".

All of the records here have The Wicked Pickett in classic form – hitting hard with a gritty, nitty, socking soul style that never lets up all the way through – a punch that packs more power than just about any of his contemporaries, even on Atlantic – which is why these albums have become so legendary over the years! Morrissey's definitely stretching out a bit with his songwriting, and Johnny Marr's guitar finds lots of lovely places to show us why he was such a standout talent in his generation – and production, as always, is wonderfully uncluttered – none of those too-smooth or too-commercial modes that held back so many Smiths contemporaries once they started raising in fame. About as classic as you can get for The Spinners – and one of the group's marvelous 70s collaborations with the mighty Thom Bell! Before hooking up with Philly, The Spinners were already a wonderful vocal group – but here, in the hands of Bell, they hit a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of well-crafted harmonies and well-directed backings – soaring one minute, gently fragile the next – all delivered with the same sort of charm that you might expect from Blue Magic or The Stylistics at their best. Like those groups, The Spinners here manage a depth that goes way beyond simple hitmaking soul – as you'll hear on the album's wonderful assortment of tracks that include "Mighty Love", "He'll Never Love You Like I Do", "Love Don't Love Nobody", "Ain't No Price On Happiness", "Since I Been Gone", and "I'm Glad You Walked Into My Life". One of the best remix projects we've heard in years – most likely because the original work is so great! One of a few records cut by this surprisingly popular Australian group – temporary ex-pats to the US scene, featuring Errol Buddle on tenor and Bryce Rhode on piano, two of the country's greatest jazz players of the 50s and 60s. Given the sympatico between the Aussie and LA mode of the 50s – this Hollywood-recorded session fits right in with other styles of the Bethlehem catalog at the time. Tracks are short and tightly arranged – and tunes include "So Nice", "Few Get It", "That Old Feeling", "Koala", and "Lover Man".

Coltrane plays the blues, but in a way like nobody else – stepping off of the deeply soulful sound of his late Prestige years, and moving into even more open and exploratory space for Atlantic! The setting is bare bones and simple – and many of these numbers begin with the sort of simple vamp that might characterize a blowing session for other labels, but which still has a strong degree of focus for this date. Rhythm is from McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and there's some great sharp edges from Coltrane here, especially on the numbers that feature tenor sax in the lead. Side one of the album features more standard bluesy vamps, but side two really opens up into some tremendous numbers that show the first great hint of modal energy – rollingly enchanting titles that still leave us breathless after all these years! Tracks include "Blues To Elvin", "Blues To Bechet", "Mr Syms", "Mr Day", and "Mr Knight". Also features the bonus tracks "Untitled Original", and alternative takes of "Blues To Elvin" and "Blues To You".

This cd compiles all of the Germs officially released material from "Forming" through the "GI" lp. It also includes the songs recorded for the Cruising soundtrack that were never used and up until now were only available on a few rare bootlegs.

Great big Dee-troit rawk, like no other group of madmen could have ever created! This is the album that established the Motor City as the capital of late 60s/early 70s gonzo psychedelic rock, and still stands as probably the most massive live recording of the era. Pile-driving outer space noise at it's finest! Recorded live at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit and featuring incisive liner notes by ringleader John Sinclair. A wonderfully trippy record by The Monkees, and the soundtrack to their equally trippy film from the late 60s. The music's like nothing else they ever did, and the record's a post-Sgt. Pepper's collage of sounds from the movie, weird little spoken bits, and delightfully psychedelic songs. Incidental music's by Ken Thorne, but the bulk of the tracks are by Jones, Tork, Nesmith, and Dolenz. Titles include "Porpoise Song", "Circle Sky", "Can You Dig It", "Gravy", and "Dandruff?"

The 70s rock soundtrack classic for Dazed & Confused – pressed on vinyl to commemorate for the 20th anniversary Richard Linklater's stoner masterpiece – a double LP on hella appropriate green vinyl! The underground of Chicago explodes in the mainstream – as Rhino offers the world a dozen soul tunes lifted from the city's hot steppers scene of the past 10 years. (Never mind the fact that by the time this one came out from Rhino, the stepping scene in the city was not what it had been years before!) One of the more obscure John Coltrane albums for Atlantic – but a beautiful batch of spiritual numbers that really show him pushing towards the sound of A Love Supreme! The date on the album's 1966, but the material was recorded earlier – in that key turning point year of 1960, when Coltrane really started to let loose with his new ideas – ideas so fresh, in fact, that they might have kept this record from getting released at the time! The group here features piano from McCoy Tyner, drums from Elvin Jones, and bass from Steve Davis – an oft-overlooked talent who did some amazing work with Coltrane during this brief time. The tracks are open, flowing, and filled with imagination – and Coltrane works both on tenor and soprano sax, on titles that include "Liberia", "Equinox", "Satellite", "Central Park West", and a classic reading of "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". CD features an alternate take of "Body & Soul", plus the track "26-2".

Stunning stuff – and one of the greatest Charles Mingus albums of all time – a true treasure recorded in that magical year of 1957, when Mingus was finally finding his strongest voice in modern music! The album's near-perfect from start to finish – as bold a statement in jazz as anyone might be allowed to make in the late 50s, yet still always focused, driven, and wrapped up with a tremendous sense of energy. The tracks are all quite long – perfect vehicles for Mingus to reach his full level of expression – played by a group that includes Curtis Porter on tenor and alto sax, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Wade Legge on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums – making an early appearance in his alliance with Mingus that would last for many many years. Titles include classic versions of "Haitian Fight Song", "Blue Cee", and "Reincarnation Of A Lovebird" – plus "The Clown", which features a long improvised monologue by Jean Shephard! The deluxe CD reissue includes two bonus tracks, "Passions of a Woman Loved" and "Tonight At Noon", and comes in a 5 inch cardboard sleeve.

Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus! Mingus plays piano and sings (yes, you read that right!) in a tight sextet with Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on reeds, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone. Mingus is trying out a kind of messed-up, blues-inspired sound here – but for some reason the tracks sort of fall short of their potential, perhaps because they're not infused with the same clarity and anger as his earlier works, or perhaps because Mingus' work on the piano just isn't as fierce as his bass playing. Still, the album's a nice one, and way better than the other Mingus piano album, on Impulse. Titles include "Oh Lord, Don't Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb On Me", "Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am", "Devil Woman", and "Passions Of A Man". Plus the CD includes three bonus tracks "Old Blues For Walt's Torin", "Peggy's Blue Skylight", and "Invisible Lady".

Arguably the most perfect record ever from New Order – a stunning second full length set that has the group emerging from the turgid depths of the early post-Ian Curtis years, and before the schmaltzy pop of the John Hughes generation! The electronics are wonderful – definitely a few generations ahead of their time, especially in the way they realize all the north England experimentation of the time, but bring it into more tuneful territory – yet never without losing its edge. The group produced the record themselves, and managed to hold onto lots of the best lessons learned from Martin Hannett – and there's a tightness and economy to the songwriting that holds up beautifully over the years. Titles include "Ultraviolence", "The Village", "We All Stand", "Your Silent Face", and the lovely "Leave Me Alone".

Golden Touch, a well-rounded little set from Rose Royce – one that has the group hitting equally on uptempo funky tracks and chilled-out mellower numbers – the latter of which feature plenty of sweet moogy touches, in the group's best mode! There are standout moments, but overall the album has more of a cohesive flow than earlier ones, and the group sounds great – coming up with some excellent harmonies when needed, and dropping down to that sparer style of instrumentation on some of the record's best tracks. Titles include "Love Is In The Air", "You're A Winner", "And You Wish For Yesterday", "Funkin Around", "Help Yourself", and "I Wanna Make It With You". Jump Street, an overlooked later gem by Rose Royce – is a funky Norman Whitefield production released shortly after the similarly strong Golden Touch – a mix of funky numbers, more spaced out cosmic keys inflected grooves and a couple of mellow jams! The funkier numbers come earlier in the set, and again prove to be some of the strongest tracks – from the tighter couple of openers to the 12+ minute jam "RR Express". Other tracks include "Jump Street", "Illusions", "Famous Last Worlds", "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming", "Please Return Your Love To Me" and "Fight It".

Galt's work on Hair has been sampled heavily by a variety of hip hop producers over the years – but even better is his work for less famous soundtracks, a good variety of which are sampled here in a wonderfully-done set that focuses on the truly funky tracks that Galt wrote for these films – and which gets past the sometimes-off tracks that can occasionally get in the way of his lesser soundtracks. The package is a total jam throughout – filled with tunes that have weird rhythms, moody keyboards, and the kind of offbeat approach to funk that's always made his work so great. There's only a few tracks from previously reissued soundtracks like Woman Is Sweeter and Cotton Comes To Harlem – plus lots lots more from weirder films that include American Express, Nucleus, Fortune & Men's Eyes, Moon Over The Alley, and Rhinoceros! In true Galt MacDermot funky fashion, there's lots of great drum work on the set from Bernard Purdie – and titles include "Golden Apples", "Coffin Ed", "Dead End", "Fragments II", "Tango", "Ed & Digger", "Duffer", "Bedroom", "Queenie's Theme", "Fortune & Men's Eyes", "Rhinoceros Theme", and "Never Die Desire Not".

The best funky album you could ever find by Galt MacDermot! Unlike some of Galt's other records, which have a few funky tracks and some other ones that aren't as great, this hand-picked collection is funky all the way through – and every cut's a monster! All the work still has that great offbeat sound that you'd expect from Galt's funky soundtracks –- and the playing is tight and funky, ver much in a classic early 70s jazz funk mode, especially on the drums, which are often handled by Idris Muhammad or Bernard Purdie. And even better, none of these songs have ever been issued before – and even though a few titles might be familiar from other recordings, the versions on this album are completely funky, often more so than the ones you might know!
