The first full length from Rene & Angela for Capitol – a tight batch of modern soul that sounds great to this day! There's a mixture of sweet duet soul with the best kind of 80s grooving – clearly inspired by Ashford & Simpson, but also with a strong sound of its own. The first couple Rene & Angela records for Capitol – together for the first time on this great CD from Expansion! Wall To Wall is easily one of the duo's best records ever, and a masterpiece of jazzy 80s groove! The sound here is clean, lean, and very bouncy on the bottom – that best blend of keyboard riffs and jazzier basslines that Capitol soul served up in the early 80s – and although tight enough to have hit potential, still more than soulful enough to keep on playing in the underground! The set's rock solid all the way through – with a great mix of midtempo steppers and more uptempo tunes – and titles include the nice groover "Secret Rendezvous", plus "Wanna Be Close To You", "I Love You More", "Love's Alright", and "Come My Way".

Hard to go wrong with Rene & Angela at this point in their career – as they're super tight, always upbeat, and plenty darn soulful – no matter what the groove! The album's a perfect example of 80s groove at its best – a reworking of mainstream soul modes with a slight modern dancefloor touch – still never disco cliches, nor some of the too-poppy modes used by some of their contemporaries – and a blend that's always right on the money for the vocals of Angela Winbush to shine! Titles include the groover "Can't Give You Up", the mellow number "My First Love", and the cuts "Take Me To The Limit", "When It Comes To Love", "Bangin The Boogie", "Rise", and "Keep Runnin". A bit late in the game for Rene & Angela, though they're still pumping out some classic 80s groove numbers, with Angela Winbush's flair for great songs. There's a few numbers here that are moving a bit too far into the commercial radio slow jam territory for our tastes, but there's a couple of nice sleepers too. A warm, easygoing and sprawling 2CD set from the Expansion and Jazz FM team – the third and best yet in their Funky Sensation series – with both hits and relatively underappreciated numbers! It's wonderful stuff all the way – and well chosen by Mike Vitti & Ralph Tee – with full-length treasures by Roy Ayers, Rick James, Cameo, Rene & Angela, Willie Hutch, Dazz Band, Charles Earland, Teen Marie and The Gap Band to name but a few. What we love about the Funky Sensation series is the sort of informal, unfussy vibe. It's not so much about shining a lot on particular labels, producers or well-defined scene – and very much about simply putting together some sensationally funky, jazzy and soulful music, nearly all of it from the mid 70s to early 80s, together in a generous double-sized set! 26 tracks on 2CDs – and over 150 minutes of music. The one and only album from Plush – an early 80s groover that features vocals from a young Siedah Garrett, and lots of help from Rene & Angela too! The group's a trio, mixing Siedah's voice with male singers Tony Phillips and Ambroce Price – a really full, focused vocal approach that works great for the tight grooves from Rene & Angela – who not only produce with Bobby Watson, but also contribute a good number of their own tunes to the set – giving the record a great blend of groovers that are totally catchy, yet never in ways that are too commercial or chart-heavy at all! The balance is a hard one to define, but a crucial one when it comes to 80s soul – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Free & Easy", "We've Got The Love", "Livin For Your Love", "Gonna Get Ya", "Strangers Again", "I Don't Know Where Love Comes From", and "Coast To Coast".

Jazzanova did such a great job on Blue Note Trip Vol 4, the label decided to have them back for one more journey – and this time around, they've expanded the range of their groove even more than before! In addition to the classic jazz from Blue Note that Jazzanova spun the last time, this collection also features a fair bit of soul, funk, and more – including some unusual bits from left field, all woven into a wonderful tapestry of music! A few of the tracks are even of recent origin, but they sit very nicely next to the older numbers – all stepping around in a spacious approach to the groove that shows that even when they're not making their own music, Jazzanova have ears to help expand other folks' tunes as well!
