Later than Tim Maia's classic soul years, but a set with a nice focus on older bossa material – sung to backings by a small group arranged by Almir Chediak, and featuring Antonio Adolfo on piano and Wilson Das Neves on drums! Given the richness of Tim's vocals, there's a style here that's quite different than other bossa revival sessions – as the Maia sound still goes deep and soulful, even on the mellower cuts. Titles include "Folha De Papel", "Minha Namorada", "Wave", "Samba De Pergunta", and a great 2 part reading of Joao Donato's "A Ra" – plus an English language version of "Inutil Paisagem (Useless Landscape)".

The lovely Dianne Reeves pays tribute to jazz legend Sarah Vaughn, in a set that's one of her straightest jazz outings to date! The album features arrangements by Billy Childs, who plays on the album, along with Mulgrew Miller, Clark Terry, Reginald Veal, and Steve Wilson. Tracks include the sweet original "I Remember Sarah", plus "A Chamada", "Key Largo", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Speak Low", "Obsession", and "Fascinating Rhythm".

A surprisingly sweet solo effort from Beach Boy Dennis Wilson – a record of surprising depth and darkness, and arguably stronger than most of the albums at the time from the larger group! Dennis produced the album himself, with some executive help from James William Guerico – whose guidance here seems key, given the overall quality of the set. There's some echoes of Beach Boys' styles in the music, but the sound is much more personal as well – Wilson's ragged vocals in the lead on all numbers, sometimes upfront and fragile, sometimes given a bit more umph through the use of processing – at that level that the whole group would often experience in the studio during the 70s. The album's as much of a showcase for Dennis' writing skills as it is for his vocals – and songs are co-written with co-producer Gregg Jakobson, as well as Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Karen Lamm-Wilson. Titles include "River Song", "Friday Night", "Thoughts Of You", "Dreamer", "Time", "You And I", and "What's Wrong". This Japanese edition of the vital 2CD version of the album is totally great - with a booklet with notes and photos – notes in Japanese, but the track info and personnel details are included in English – and all those great bonus tracks that include "Mexico", "Holy Man", "Only With You", and "Tug Of Love". Disc Two includes with the sessions for the unreleased Bambu album – with tracks that include "School Girl", "It's Not Too Late", "Under The Moonlight", "Are You Real", "He's A Bum", "Cocktails", "I Love You", "Constant Companion", and "Time For Bed", "Holy Man Taylor Hawkins Version)" and more.

Key tracks from a really important time in Jamaican music – the wonderful rocksteady years of the late 60s, when the Kingston crowd were really coming with a unique groove of their own! The music here isn't really reggae, but kind of a rougher precursor – and one that still shows plenty of influence from American soul of the time – albeit the deeper, more laidback styles that were having an undeniable influence on Jamaica. It's incredible stuff – produced by Niney The Observer and featuring numbers by Dennis Brown, Alexander "Bottlehead" Portious, Delroy Wilson and Big Youth – all backed masterfully by the Soul Syndicate Band! Recorded on a single evening at the club, it was the first ever live session captured at the iconic nightspot – and it still sounds great! Includes "Cassandra", "Rock With Me Baby" and Give A Helping Hand" by Dennis Brown, "Everything I Own" and "Love Overdue" by Alexander Portious, "I'm A Happy Man", "It's A Shame" and more by Delroy Wilson, "Dread In A Babylon" by Big Youth and more. The stage intros for each act are left in the recording, given the whole thing an air of importance and geniune sense of it's place in Jamaican music history. Nice!

The groundbreaking hip hop culture magazine may be long gone, but the endearingly cynical, satirical, bitter yet undeniably realistic voice of Sacha Jenkins and Ego Trip contributers and collaborators is alive and well in their Big Book Of Racism! Chapters include "Disgracism", "Get Ur Race On", "Embracism", "Da Yellow Pages", "Lights, Camera, Affirmative Action", and many, many more. Some of the stories, photos, and articles here were pulled from the defunct mag, but the majority are brand spankin' new for this volume – a great sign that Jenkins and co. will be around for a long, long time! You pretty much know what you are in for with the intro, "Due to our strong personal convictions, we wish to stress that this book in no way endorses a belief in racism. We just hate everybody." Great, biting stuff. Paperback, 304 pages. Highly recommended!
