New RaekwonIce Cream (LP, inst)/Incarcerated Scarfaces (LP, inst) ... 12-inch
Loud, 1995. Used (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two tracks from "Only Built For Cuban Linx", still one of the best Wu-associated LPs. Production from RZA at the height of his skills. "Ice Cream", the song that inspired all those 'ice cream flavor' t-shirts, features Ghost Face, Method Man, and Cappadonna (then known as Cappacino) and is one of the funnier hip hop 'love songs' in a while. Now to track down the newly discovered Earl Klugh sample. . . 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has heavy edge wear, light ringwear, and a bit of splitting on the spine.)

New RaekwonOnly Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt 2 (purple colored vinyl) ... LP
IHR, 2009. Used 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The long awaited Cuban Linx Pt 2 from Raekwon – and one of those late model Wu Tang efforts that reminds us of how vital the Wu Tang were in their prime, as well as how sharp the still are when the moons align and the pieces fall into place! OBFCL Pt 2 is indeed one of those rare newer Wu sets that stands up proudly with the first wave. Sure, it's might not be an eternal classic, but the best stuff here is incredible. Rugged & raw, with intricate crack game noir from a master. 22 tracks in all: the bone chilling J Dilla beat backed gem "House Of Flying Daggers" feat Inspectah Deck, Ghostface and Meth, "Sonny's Missing" (produced by Pete Rock), "Cold Outside" feat Ghostface, "Black Mozart" feat RZA & Inspectah Deck, "Catalina" feat Lyfe Jennings and "About Me" (both produced by Dr Dre), "We Will Rob You" feat Slick Rick, Masta Killa & GZA, "Kiss The Ring" feat Inspectah Deck & Masta Killa, "10 Bricks" feat Cappadonna & Ghostface and many more. LP features two bonus tracks; "Walk With Me" & "Badlands". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian ColemanCheck The Technique Vol 2 – More Liner Notes For Hip Hop Junkies (paperback) ... Book
Wax Facts Press, 2014. New Copy ... $25.99 27.98
Golden age of hip hop historian Brian Coleman's second Check The Technique tome – the in-depth stories behind some of the greatest records of the 80s and early 90s – an even greater collection than the first volume! Coleman's approach is straight-forward and direct – chronicling a choice selection of 25 bonafide classic albums, breaking them down track-by-track, peppered by interviews with the artists, producers and other principle personalities behind the work, for the most honest histories that Coleman can get. Volume 2 uses a broader time frame than the previous collection, going as far back as 1981's Wild Style Breakbeats, and as recent as the late 90s for Mos Def & Talib Kweli's Black Star and The Coup's Steal This Album. Other records discussioned include The Cactus Album by 3rd Bass, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing by Black Sheep, The Sun Rises In The East by Jeru The Damaja, Mantronix The Album, Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Links, Stetsasonic In Full Gear, Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop by Diamond & The Psychotic Neurotics and more. Like the author's Check The Technique Vol 1 and Rakim Told Me, it's vital hip hop history, breezily readable and engrossing as can be. 525 paperback pages, and each chapter includes photos of the artists, the records and associated singles, and other choice historical tidbits. Essential! Book

Freddie Gibbs & MadlibPinata ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Smart , streetwise raps from Freddie Gibbs, backed by restlessly inventive production from Madlib – here on one of the best records yet on 'Lib's own Madlib Invazion imprint! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight shooting, street lingo slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats. Gibbs is sharply on point throughout here, and if it seems like an oddball pairing at first glance, rest assured, these guys work GREAT together. Guests include Danny Brown – who drops some top shelf wordplay of his own on "High" – plus the Wu legend Raekwon on "Bomb", Domo Genius & Earl Sweatshirt on "Robes", Domo Genius, G-Whiz, Mac Miller and more on the title cut, and more. Other titles include "Supplier", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real" and "Uno". CD

Epic, 2001. Very Good 2LP ... $8.99
Ghostface's follow up to Supreme Clientele – a tough predecessor to live up, no doubt about that – but Bulletproof Wallets is still a cut or 10 above some of the Wu work of the later 90s and early 00s! The single "Ghost Showers" is a great track, and "Never Be The Same Again" with Raekwon and Carl Thomas is another killer cut – others titles include "Flowers" with Method Man & Superb, "Jealousy", "The Juks" feat Trife & Superb, "Walking Through Darkness" feat Takitha, "The Hilton", "Ice" and more. New J DillaJay Stay Paid ... LP
Nature Sounds, 2009. New Copy 2LP ... $17.99
An excellent full length set of beats & genius from J Dilla – put together by fellow beatmaker extraordinaire Pete Rock, with all Dilla beats – a surprising triumph! Call us jaded, but honestly, we weren't sure how deep the well could go of ready-to-go beats from Dilla, but this stuff is truly top shelf – nearly as strong as the instant classic Donuts from a few years back! Pete Rock crafts the set as if it's a radio show or mixtape, but his skill in so doing is well above and beyond the norm – neither Pete's interjections nor the guest rappers ever get in the way of the flow, it's as smooth as can be. Vocal guests include Ma Dukes (the album was made under Ma's auspices), plus Lil Fame & MOP, Black Thought, Frank Nitty of Frank N Dank, Doom, Illa J & Cue D, Blu, and others. Titles include "King", "I Told Yall", "Smoke" feat Blu, "CaDILLAc". "Fire Wood Drumstix" feat Doom, "Big Day", "24K Rap" feat Havoc of Mobb Deep & Raekwon, "Coming Back", "Mythsysizer" and more. 27 tracks in all, about an hour of unreleased Dilla! Also, some nice guest appearances from Method Man, Raekwon, Nas, Big Noyd. 14 full-length tracks including the hilarious "Drop A Gem On 'Em" (taking out to 2-Pac), "Hell On Earth", "Extortion", "Still Shinin'", "G.O.D. New Ghostface KillahSupreme Clientele (clean version) ... LP
Epic, 2000. Used 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ghostface's second full length – maybe the most worthwhile Wu solo project, and the best of all them since the first wave of the Wu. Ghost's flow is raw as hell, furious and re-energized, and so startlingly poetic that we were completely blown away on the first listen. The guests seem to feed off this huge energy boom, too, with Method Man and Cappadona getting their best verses in a while, and even RZA's misguided Bobby Digital persona kicks some raw dynamite. Also features appearances by Raekwon and Redman, plus a few tracks with beats by the RZA. Tracks include "Nutmeg", "Saturday Nite", "Apollo Kids", "The Grain", "Child's Play", "Malcolm", "Buck 50", and "Cherchez La Ghost". LP, Vinyl record album

Other tracks include "I'm Madd", "How We Do" feat Puff Daddy, "Ghetto" feat Raekwon & Carl Thomas, "Surviving The Game", "Whatever", "They Just Don't Know" feat Nature & Black Rob, "Esta Loca" feat the Beatnuts, "Shysty Broads", "Car Jack", and the pre-Aftermath era "How To Rob" by 50 Cent. New Ghostface KillahFishscale ... LP
Def Jam, 2006. Used 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Ghostface brings some real hip hop to latter day Def Jam – his best album since Supreme Clientele – and possibly '06 hip hop album of the year! Fishscale features appearances by the Wu Tang Clan & Theodore Unit, Ne-Yo, Megan Ward and others on the mic – but it's the stable of producers that helps make this one of the best above ground hip hop albums we've heard in a long time. MF Doom puts his Metal Fingerz behind the boards for a bunch of tracks, and the legendary Pete Rock handles a few – with additional work by J Dilla, Just Blaze, Lewis Parker and others. Ghost brings a literal lyrical focus to a number of the tracks – but he's still spraying words all over the damn place – and the best tracks are just as thrilling as his surreal word bombs of yore. Tracks include "Shakey Dog", "Kilo" feat Raekwon, the excellent Just Blaze-produced anthem "The Champ", "9 Milli Bros" feat Wu Tang Clan, "Beauty Jackson", "RAGU" feat Raekwon, "Be Easy" feat Trife, "Dogs of War" feat Raekwon & Theodore Unit, "Barbershop" and more.
