Harley Hatcher — Wild Wheels ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ .... $1.99
A weird batch of folksy rock tunes – composed and produced by Harley Hatcher for Sidewalk Enterprises, and sounding a lot more like a Sidewalk or Tower soundtrack than something on RCA. The groups are the usual obscurities that would show up on a Mike Curb soundtrack – pictured on the back cover, but still leaving us to wonder if they really existed at all. Tracks include "Holiday Rider" by The Saturday Revue, "Jailer Let Me Go Home" and "A Hurt In My Heart" by Don Epperson, "Playin Hard To Get" by Billie & Blue, and "Wine Women & Song" by Terry Stafford.

Highway Robbery — Highway Robbery ... LP
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A heady power trio, with a sound that's a lot more heavy than you'd guess from the cover! These guys come across looking like they might be a soft rock harmony group, but instead they wail away beautifully with a pre-metal sort of sound – lots of full, fierce rhythms and fuzzed-up guitar – very lean and mean, and quite uncharacteristic for the RCA label at the time. Solos are especially burning – right up there with Sabbath at the time – and believe it or not, the guys actually do harmonize a bit on the lyrics too! Titles include "Lazy Woman", "Mystery Rider", "Fifteen", "All I Need", "Promotion Man", and "Bells".

Weldon Irvine — Cosmic Vortex (Justice Divine) ... LP
RCA, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A genius bit of work from the legendary Weldon Irvine – a mightily righteous effort that more than lives up to its heady title and cover! After turning out 2 great albums on his own indie Nodlew label, Weldon really steps into greatness with this set – using the bigger budget of his deal with RCA to expand out his musical vision in a number of different directions. Keyboards are still very much at the forefront of his sound – played with that heavily vamping left hand that makes his work so funky – but there's also a focus on lyrics here too – sung by Weldon with support form singers Ojuleba & Nalo, in a way that creates a righteous "many voiced" mode on the lyrical tracks! Things get plenty jazzy on side two, though – and a few key tracks really take off in a heavily jamming way, mixing Weldon's keys with additional reeds, guitar, and percussion. Titles include excellent track "Walk That Walk, Talk that Talk", plus other great ones like "Love Your Brother", "Let Yourself Be Free", "Quiet", "I'll Name It Tomorrow", and "Love Jones".

new Weldon Irvine — Sinbad ... LP
RCA, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Weldon Irvine's last album for a major label – and a key set that marks the debut of the legendary Don Blackman! Irvine's still very much in charge of the session, but Blackman's emerging here with the strength that would show up on his later soul sessions – singing lead vocals on some of the best cuts on the record, and also playing acoustic piano next to Weldon's bank of electric keys. Tunes are nicely varied throughout – returning to the exploratory nature of some of Irvine's earlier records – and there's even some great mellower numbers that are some of our favorite tracks on the set – including the sublime stepper "I Love You", the gently spacey "Music Is The Key", and a sweet instrumental cover of "What's Going On". Other tracks include "Sinbad", "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing", "Do Something For Yourself", and "Here's Where I Came In".

new Weldon Irvine — Spirit Man ... LP
RCA, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Massively funky work from the mighty Weldon Irvine – sublimely cosmic and filled with soul throughout! The vibe here is a bit more focused than on some of Weldon's earlier albums – a moody blend of electric keys, heavy percussion, and some slight bits of jazzy solo work by trumpeters Charles Sullivan and Everett Blood Hollins, and saxophonist Sonny Fortune – both players who really help the album find some soulful structure! The album's all-instrumental, and has Weldon really taking off on the keyboards – not just using them for main solos, but also dropping in cool noisy bits and analogue effects that really sound great – almost out-Herbieing Herbie Hcock for the record, and turning in some of his biggest classics on wax! Titles include the massive sample cut "We Gettin' Down", plus "Jungle Juice", "Blast Off", "Softly", "Power & The Glory", "Yasmin", and "Pogo Stick".

Glenn Jones — Everybody Loves A Winner (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/FTG, 1983. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 19.99
Excellent work by Glenn Jones – even if the record is only a 5 track EP! The set is one of those strange little records issued in the early 80s, when the music industry was trying to figure out a way to make money between the ever-escalating cost of the LP and the less-popular 12" single – but it easily packs as much punch as most other full length soul records from the same time. Glenn's incredible in the set – showing that he's one of the few really strong soul talents to emerge in the 80s, with a voice that's perfect for tight-grooving tunes and for mellower ballads. There's a fair bit of keyboard work on the set, and Glenn's voice holds strong in a great way – working wonderfully on titles that include "Everybody Loves A Winner", "Thank You For The Love", "I Am Somebody", and "Keep On Doing". Also features a bonus instrumental version of "I Am Somebody".

Quincy Jones/Jose Feliciano — Mackenna's Gold ... LP
RCA, 1969. Near Mint- .... $6.99
A western soundtrack – but one that's groovier than you might expect, given that the music was done by Quincy and Jose! The general style is strings and western themes, but Quincy manages to put a bit of bounce at the bottom – using an electric bass in a syncopated style that's quite different from your average western score, and which gives a couple of tracks a nice gliding easy feel that sounds like some of Mancini's best in the early 70s. Jose sings the tune "Ole Turkey Buzzard" in both English and Spanish – and the tune itself is a pretty nice little number! Other tracks include "Soul Full Of Gold", "Waterhole Trek", "Massacre Montage", and "Apache Camp".

Evelyn King — I'm In Love ... LP
RCA, 1981. Very Good+ .... $2.99
One of the real standouts in Evelyn King's career – a sharply focused album that's filled with catchy 80s styled tunes – and which benefits from some great help from a young Kashif! Lots of the tracks have that great flair for a catchy hook that mark's Evelyn's best work – an approach that's never too slick or too forced, and which has a comfortable way of sliding into a tune. Titles include "I'm In Love", "What Are You Waiting For", "If You Want My Lovin", "I Can't Take It", "The Best Is Yet To Come", and "The Other Side Of Love".

Kinks — Preservation Act 1 ... LP
RCA, 1973. Near Mint- .... $7.99
A major extension of the concept albums first begun by The Kinks with Village Green and Arthur – taken fully to the next level, and conceived as a theatrical work with a strong message-oriented base of songs! The vibe here is kind of an exaggeration of the "preservation" feeling of the "Village Green Preservation Society" single – carried out in a variety of dramatic rock styles that shift with the mood of the scenes, and which show Ray and the group working in Tommy-like spectacle , with a subsequent range of musical modes on the set. Titles include "Morning Song", "Demotion", "Sitting In The Midday Sun", "There's A Change In The Weather", "Where Are They Now", and "Cricket".

Jon Lucien — Rashida ... LP
RCA, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Amazing work from the great Jon Lucien – and probably his best-ever record! The album has Jon hitting a totally unified vision of spacey soul – bringing in elements of Brazilian music and touches of his Carribean roots, fusing them together with a sweet jazzy style and one of the most compelling voices we've ever heard in soul music. It takes courage to be this gentle and sincere, and although the record was never a hit when it was released, it's been a perpetual favorite of groovers for many many years – thanks to the depth of Lucien's lyrics, and the unique range of rhythms in the set! Includes the funky "Would You Believe in Me", the space "Lady Love", and the tracks "Kuenda", "Satan", "Love Everlasting", and soooo many more. Essential soul from one of the 70's most righteous artists – and probably the best place to start sampling his rich career!

Galt MacDermot — Hair – Original Broadway Cast Recording ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good+ .... $1.99
One of the most influential musical moments of the 60s – Hair! Hair not only forever changed the concept of musical theater on Broadway, but it also gave the world an incredible array of groovy tunes with odd rhythms – and made a place for composer Galt MacDermot to continue his musical experiments for years to come – eventually influencing a generation of beatheads and hip hoppers as a result! This package features the official Broadway recording of the score – with singers who include Ronnie Dyson, Diane Keaton, and Melba Moore! Titles include "Aquarius", "Where Do I Go", "My Conviction", "Frank Mills", "Be In", "Abie Baby", "Colored Spade", and "Air".

Machine — Machine ... LP
Hologram/RCA, 1979. Very Good .... $5.99
Incredibly great work from Machine – an album of disco tunes, but with a hipper, message-oriented feel than most of its contemporaries! The group will forever be known for their classic hit "There But For The Grace Of God Go I" – an infectious groover with a wild lyric about urban flight in the 70s – and they more than match the quality of that one with a host of other great tunes on the set that have a similar feel. Part of the credit should go to August Darnell, working here in a pre-Kid Creole way that throws in lots of jagged touches and some really wicked guitar to most of the tunes! Tracks include "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", plus "Mr. Destiny", "You've Come A Long Way Baby", "It's The Last Time Again", and "Marisa".

Main Ingredient — Afrodisiac ... LP
RCA, 1973. Very Good- Gatefold .... $16.99
One of the most righteous albums ever from the Main Ingredient – as you might guess from its title and stylish cover! The group are really opening up here – and show a distinct Stevie Wonder influence throughout – not just because they perform their own hip takes on a number of tunes by Stevie, but also because Wonder himself plays a bit on the record! Rhythms are inventive, and grooves nice and complex – way past standard chart soul, into a heady mix that holds up beautifully over the years. Keyboards slide in great with the harmonies – and titles include great versions of Stevie Wonder tunes "Superwoman", "Where Were You When I Needed You", "Something Lovely", "Girl Blue", and "I Am Yours" – plus the great breakbeat track "You Can Call Me Rover", which has a very tight drum sound at the beginning, and tight soul harmonies all the way through. Also features a hip take on the Isleys' "Work To Do" too!

Nancy Malcomb — West Coast Of Broadway ... LP
RCA, 1957. Very Good .... $9.99
An under-discovered vocalist from the 50s – the great Nancy Malcomb, a singer we'd rank right up there with Chris Connor's best at the time! Nancy's got a very jazzy approach to her work – no surprise, as she plays piano as well as she sings – with support here from a great small combo that includes Al Viola on guitar, Jim Anton on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums! The style is nicely laidback – considerably more so than other vocal albums on RCA for the time – with a relaxed, intimate approach that recalls some of the advances that Connor made for female singers in jazz right around the same time, delivered by Nancy with similarly great inflections on the vocals. Titles include "Make The Man Love Me", "Old Devil Moon", "Nobody's Heart", "Can't We Be Friends", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Anything Goes", and "Mountain Greenery".

Henry Mancini — Hatari ... LP
RCA, 1962. Very Good .... $1.99
Mancini's light lilting groovy score to this flop of a film by Howard Hawks! Again, the score is better remembered than the film – probably because it gave the world the great cut "Baby Elephant Walk", a goofy little number that still gets churned up a lot today. There's lots of other nice bits like that one on here, including "Big Band Bwana", "Night Side", "Crocodile Go Home", and "Theme From Hatari".

Henry Mancini — Music Of Hawaii ... LP
RCA, 1966. Near Mint- .... $0.99
A surprisingly nice little record by Henry Mancini – one that's quite different than other albums of Hawaiian tunes! The record is much more a soundtrack than anything else – slightly exotic soundscapes arranged by Hank, and featuring the Baldwin harpsichord on many tunes. That instrument's not really one we'd associate with Hawaii, which is why we dig the record so much – and it gives the whole thing a really spooky feel, especially as odd instruments and voices drift into the mix. Titles include "Quiet Village", "The Moon Of Manakoora", "Pearly Shells", "Driftwood & Dreams", "Tiny Bubbles", and "Beyond The Reef".

Henry Mancini — Pink Panther – Original Soundtrack ... LP
RCA, 1963. Very Good- .... $9.99
Sure, you've heard it a million times – but it's still a fantastic soundtrack! Mancini's whimsical scoring was a perfect touch for this classic Peter Sellers film – and it's made even better by the LA group of musicians who play the music, including Plas Johnson, Pete Jolly, Shelly Manne, Jack Sheldon, and Larry Bunker. The "Pink Panther Theme" should be familiar enough to you, but there's loads of other nice numbers – like "Something For Sellers", "Piano & Strings", "The Village Inn", "The Tiber Tiwst", and "Cortina". Lots of jaunty jazz numbers – with clever breakaway solos in the Mancini mode!

Charles Mingus — Tijuana Moods ... LP
RCA, 1957/1962. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Oh how we love this album – and we think it may well be the best album ever from Charles Mingus! The set was recorded in that magical Mingus year of 1957, but oddly not released until 1962 – missing some of the initial frenzy of his discovery during the Atlantic and Columbia years. But the album's actually a treasure that predates the better-known latter sides – with a sharpness and intensity that Mingus hardly ever matched again! The group is one of his strongest ever – with Shafi Hadi on alto, Clarence Shaw on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Bill Triglia on piano. There's a slight Latin vibe, as you might expect from the title – but it's very slight overall, and most of the tunes are in that sharply angular, fully expressive style that flowered most strongly for Mingus in the late 50s. There's not a wasted moment of music on the whole album – with tight solos and incredible rhythms that dominate every second of the extended tracks – and titles include "Dizzy Moods", "Flamingo", "Los Mariachis", "Ysabel's Tabel Dance", and "Tijuana Gift Shop".

Jack Montrose — Blues & Vanilla ... LP
RCA, 1956. Very Good- .... $11.99
A standout session from Jack Montrose – one of the most overlooked players on the west coast scene of the 50s! Montrose's tenor work is always a treat, but here, he's playing in an unusual setting that includes Red Norvo on vibes, Joe Maini on alto sax, and Jim Hall on guitar – all working with Jack on a set of tunes that have the tight arrangements of his work on Atlantic and Pacific Jazz – yet which also open up with some interesting instrumental twists that break the mold a bit! Side one of the set features the 18 minute tune "Concertino Do Camera" – a nicely extended track that offers plenty of room for solo work – and the other shorter tracks still offer up strong solos too – on titles that include "Bernie's Tune", "A Dandy Line", "Bockhanal", and "For The Fairest".

Stanley Myers — Ulysses ... LP
RCA, 1967. Very Good .... $1.99
A very nice soundtrack for this obscure film loosely based on the novel by Joyce – clearly a tough task, given the scope of the original book! Myers' score is suitably crazy – with a strange array of orchestral pieces, moving in and out in a "suite" format, and sounding a lot like a Nino Rota soundtrack overall – with plenty of playfully instrumental moments. Titles include "Proteus", "Nestor", "Circe", and "Ithaca".

National Youth Jazz Orchestra — 11 Plus – NYJO Live At London Weekend Television ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good+ .... $0.49
A lively band of young British players, packed into a large group with a tight swinging sound that evokes some of the better continental bands of the sort at the time – like the Clarke-Boland Ensemble, the Johnny Dankworth group, and even bits of Mike Westbrook's early work. The set list is a nice group of lesser-known titles – like "Who-Wray?", "Full House", "Spaghetti Junction", "Marianne", "Eleven Plus", and "Legs Eleven". Orchestra directed by Bill Ashton, and the set was recorded at London Weekend Television in 1975. And if it sounds drippy, give it a chance – as there's more than a few nice cuts here that feel like they're lifted off a compliation like Jazz Biznezz, or some of those other hip European sets!

New Birth — New Birth ... LP
RCA, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Way more than just another soul group – as The New Birth are almost big enough to be their own sort of soul music village – complete with different neighborhoods along the way! Vocals are handled by the combined groups of The Mint Juleps and Now Sound – gals and guys that soar together wonderfully with backings from The Nite-Liters – who help give the record a righteous undercurrent at most points, which makes the whole thing sound way hipper than any other projects of this nature! Vernon Bulllock acts as the music director for the whole group – really pulling things together with a tightness that's outta sight – and leadership of the project comes from Harvey Fuqua – who arranged and produced as well. There's some massively heavy talent on board for this initial outing, and you can definitely hear it all come into play beautifully – a wonderful harmony of rich talents, without any egos or issues to get in the way. Vocals chance nicely throughout – sometimes a female lead, sometimes male – as do the grooves, which are funky one minute, and mellow the next! Tracks include "All The Way", "Pretty Words Don't Mean A Thing", "One Way Bus", "It's You Or No One", "Do The Funky Chicken", "The Unh Song", and "What'll I Do".

Phineas Newborn — While My Lady Sleeps ... LP
RCA, 1957. Very Good- .... $4.99
A rare "with orchestra" outing from pianist Phineas Newborn – one that has his gentle keys out front of larger backings by Dennis Farnon – all cast in the kind of dreamy mode you might expect from the title! Yet while the whole thing's certainly got a late night feel, Newborn's piano work is still quite strongly up in the mix – never smothered in strings, and instead often stepping along with the same force as some of his trio outings – but often set free from more rhythmic modes, in a way that makes for some of Phineas' most sophisticated stylings on RCA. Titles include "Lazy Mood", "Bali Hai", "If I Should Lose You", "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", and "While My Lady Sleeps".
(Original pressing. Cover has masking tape on all seams, some peeling on the spine, and WGN letters on back. Label has a small sticker.)

Harry Nilsson — Point (with 11.5" X 11.5" full color comic storyboard) ... LP
RCA/Get On Down, Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $19.99 20.98
One of greatest moments of genius by pop vocals eccentric Harry Nilsson – the classic early 70s "story" album The Point – perhaps is most imaginative work! The Point is a weird tale of a kid whose head was differently shaped than the rest of his townsfolk (hey, we're not making this up!), which leads him to go on a Yellow Submarine-esque psychedelic odyssey to sort out his identity and feelings! In the end, everything ends up all happy and sweet, but not before Nilsson lays down some very cool, very groovy tracks over nice off-beat instrumentation arranged and conducted by George Tipton. Titles include "Everything's Got 'Em", "Me And My Arrow", "Poli High", "Think About Your Troubles", "Life Life", "Are You Sleeping?", "POV Waltz" and more. This reverent 2012 vinyl reissue from Get On Down includes a reproduction of the original 11.5" X 11.5" full color comic storyboard by Gary Lund – with the lyrics printed in the gatefold. Beautiful!

new Nite-Liters — Different Strokes ... LP
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of the best albums of funky instrumentals by the legendary Nite Liters – and probably their hardest to find! The record's got loads of nice cuts that hit their classic funky groove in a way that brings to mind The Meters or The JBs – but which also has the Nite-Liter's own unique brand of tight party funk! Titles include "Funky Vamp", "Do The Granny", "Skimo's Theme", "Theme From Buck & The Preacher", and their cover of Quincy Jones' "Money Runner" from the film $, a real sample classic! Great stuff, and one that we hardly ever see on original wax!
(PLEASE NOTE: Even though the back cover and the inner label lists 5 songs on side 1, there are actually only 4 ("Funky-Vamp" is missing).)

new Nite-Liters — Instrumental Directions ... LP
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Cold, hard, and funky! This might be the greatest album ever by this legendary 70s funk band – and it's got a killer sound that has the tightness of the JBs, the rawness of the early Meters, and the frenzy of a rare funky 45! Includes the incredible "Afro Strut" – worth the price of the record alone, as it's got this screaming sax riff that's completely insane! Other nice ones include covers of "Shaft" and "Them Changes", plus "Brand X", "Baker's Instant", and "Respect To The Other Man".

Nite-Liters — Morning, Noon & The Nite-Liters ... LP
RCA, 1971. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A great album filled with hard breaks, tight choppy guitars, and a deep funky sound. This is one of the best early albums by the Nite Liters, and it's filled with great grooves like "Funky-Doo", "Stinkin Charlie", and "K-Jee" – but just about every track is a funky winner! These guys fit right in between The Meters & The JBs – and in our book, they're one of the best instrumental funk acts of the 70s! The album's like finding a pile of rare funky 45s, all pressed onto the same piece of wax!

Stone funky funky! This is an excellent reissue of the Nite Liters' classic first album, and a monster batch of funky instrumentals that we'd put up there with the great Meters records on Josie, or the classic JBs LPs on People! There's lots of hard drums, choppy guitars, and good funky grooves. The tracks are short and hard, with the kind of raw funk groove that you buy rare funk LPs for. Tracks include "Itchy Brother", "Snap Your Twig", "Down & Dirty", "The Heckler", and "Stuff N It".

Gene Page — Blacula ... LP
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Deadlier than Dracula – and a lot funkier too! This is the original soundtrack for the classic blacksploitation horror flick starring the baaadest Drac ever to grace the screen of all those shabby downtown theaters that were still around in the 70s – a wicked batch of wah-wah tunes penned by Gene Page, and featuring a great bit of keyboards as well! The set's got a few vocal numbers, sung by 21st Century Ltd and The Hues Corporation, but it's the instrumentals that really steal the show here – and there's plenty of great ones here that rank with the best blacksploitation work of the decade – hard and funky groovers that have kept this one grooving in the crates for many many years. Titles include "Blacula Strikes", "The Stalkwalk", "Movin", "Run Tina Run", "Firebombs", and "Good To The Last Drop".

Greg Perry — Smokin' ... LP
RCA, 1977. Very Good .... $11.99
A great little album of smooth soul cuts from Greg Perry – an extremely talented arranger, producer, and songwriter whose credits includes work in soul, pop, and country – appearing here in one of the few sessions he ever cut under his own name! There's a bit of a southern soul feel to the album, although most of the record's got a modern feel – and we'd compare this one to mid 70s work by Lou Courtney, which has a similar combination of styles. A classic level effort that's been too long undiscovered! Cuts include "Where There's Smoke (There's Fire)", "Melody", "(I Can See The) Handwriting On The Wall", "How's Your Love Life, Baby", "A Taste Of You (Is A Taste Of Love)", "Come Fly With Me", "I'll Always Be In Love With You" and "Let's Get Away From It All".

new Pointer Sisters — Contact ... LP
RCA, 1985. Very Good .... $0.99
The Pointer Sisters in their slick, sultry pop soul mode of the mid 80s – at this point doing the synthesizer soul sound as well as ever – with big hooks and more subtle stylistic flourishes in the production! The Pointers were on one heck of a commercial win streak at this point, and the memorable vocal harmonies are a big part of that, but the album as a whole stands up a whole lot better than many mid 80s mainstream R&B efforts by The Pointer Sisters and many others! Titles include "Hey You", "Twist My Arm", "Dare Me", "Freedom", "Pound Pound Pound", and "Contact".

Iggy Pop — Idiot (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/4 Men With Beards, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.99
Iggy's second solo LP proper, and a strange morass of junkie desperation and gutteral white punk funk – a conscious decision to move away from the guitar roar of the Stooges era and closer to the sounds his longtime champion David Bowie was experimenting with at the time, with a little bit of Lou Reed for good measure – but make no mistakes, this is Iggy's show. It's as fascinating as it is impressive on a more visceral level, heavy bass rhythms and keys intergral to the sound, and weary latenight storytelling that trips you out on contact. All tunes co-written by Bowie, who would go on to make a lot of money off "China Girl" a few years into the 80s when the world was more ready for it, plus the classic "Nightclubbing", "Sister Midnight", "Baby", "Dum, Dum Boys", "Tiny Girls" and "Mass Production".

One of Bud's more obscure sides from the 50s – a one-off date for RCA that features a trio that included Art Taylor on drums and George Duvivier on bass! There's a nice tension to the material – played with a strength that matches most of Bud's other work from the time – and which makes the session stand nicely alongside his more famous work on Verve and Blue Note! The set features 11 tracks in all – and titles include "Time Was", "Jump City", "Elegy", "Coscrane", and "Topsy Turvy".

Tito Puente — Quatro – The Definitive Collection (Cuban Carnival/Night Beat/Dance Mania/Revolving Bandstand/Bonus Edition) (5LP set) (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
RCA/Sony, Late 50s. New Copy 5 LPs .... $79.99 109.98
A smoking set of work from Tito Puente – four classic albums, wrapped together in a single package – with a bonus album of rare material too! First up is Cuban Carnival – one of Tito Puente's finest albums for RCA, with a tight hard bunch of cuts that have a Cuban big band sound, and a lot more drive to them than some of Tito's other work for the label. Ray Bryant wrote the great track "Cuban Fantasy", and Tito contributed most of the other tunes on the set – a really unique batch of material that includes "Yambeque", "Elegua Chango", "Que Sera", and "Cha Cha De Pollos". The percussion is nice and hard, and the band grooves in tight ensemble playing throughout! Night Beat is a really jazzy effort that was cut with a top-shelf list of players! The groove's a bit different than some of Tito's other work – but in a good way, and one that has him stretching past straight Latin to mix in a heavy dose of jazz – really getting the most of players who include Eddie Bert on trombone, Gene Quill on saxes, Bernie Glow on trumpet, and Barry Galbraith on guitar. The rhythms are key – and in addition to drums from Jimmy Cobb, the album also features Mongo Santamaria on congas and Willy Correa on bongos – not to mention more percussion from Tito himself! Dance Mania is a burner of a set from Tito Puente – very well titled to suit the energy of the session! The tracks are all highly rhythmic numbers – short, but filled with jazzy horn flourishes and the kind of snapping rhythms that made the Puente group one of the biggest crossover favorites of the 50s. Tunes nicely mix up vocals with some more pronounced jazz soloing – getting a heck of a lot into a relatively small space, and really keeping up the energy of the record overall. Revolving Bandstand is a joint project from Tito Puente and Buddy Morrow – both leaders who recorded some great work for the label in the 50s, sounding great here in a unique variation on their classic sounds! The album has both Morrow and Puente playing back to back – creating a "revolving bandstand" that has both groups playing the same tunes at the same time – a very odd approach, but one that comes off well here – mixing Tito's Latin and Buddy's swing nicely, without too much confusion in the instrumentation. There's some great vibes on a few tracks! Last up is Tito Puente Quatro Bonus Edition – a set that features 13 rare tracks, with singles, outtakes, and more – including "La Virgen De La Macarena", "Moonlight In Vermont", "The Continental (alt take)", "Blue Moon (alt)", "Ran Kan Kan", "Timbal Y Bongo", and many outtakes of "Pa Los Rumberos"! All LPs on 180 gram vinyl – with liner notes too!

RCA, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of the greatest Tito Puente albums from the 50s, and a spare percussion jam session that's right up there with his legendary Puente In Percussion album! The group features Mongo Santamaria, Bill Correa, Julito Collazo, and Enrigue Marti on percussion with Tito – and the only other additional sounds are some occasional vocals, and a pounding bassline. The set's extremely raw, with a very tight groove – and the sound is incredible – easily enough to make this one of Tito's best percussion dates ever! Titles include "Ti Mon Bo", "Elequana", "Bragada", "Alaumba Chemache", "Hot Timbales", and "Four By Two".

Lou Reed — Transformer ... LP
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99 22.98
Lou Reed's fantastic early solo LP – melding the aloof, plaintive vocal performance style he perfected with the Velvets and unbelievable sharp songwriting with the vamped up, fuzzed out guitars of Mick Ronson, some symphonic touches, and the guiding spirit of Ziggy Stardust era Bowie. This is a record that could have failed on any number of levels, but it worked perfectly, making Lou an unlikely rock star and setting the bar pretty, pretty high, even if the makeup was a bit much for Lou! Titles include the iconic "Take A Walk On The Wild Side", "Vicious", "Andy's Chest", "Perfect Day", "Hangin Round", "Make Up", the Ziggy like "Satellite Of Love""Wagon Wheel", "I'm So Free" and more.

Buddy Rich — Speak No Evil ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good .... $4.99
One of the tightest 70s albums from Buddy Rich – a record that's got some smooth and soulful touches, and a groove that's quite different than most of his other work! Chicago soul maestro Richard Evans handled the arrangements for the record – and he's got a great way of making things groove, even with a larger groove – leaving plenty of space for key solos from players who include Jon Faddis on trumpet, Joe Farrell on tenor sax, Ross Trout on guitar, and Kenny Barron on electric piano! Most numbers are somewhat upbeat and clubby – like some of the funky fusion on the Kudu label from the time – and a few numbers feature chorus vocals from a trio of female soul singers that includes Rhetta Hughes, Vivian Cherry, and Lain Grooves. Titles include "Yearnin Learnin", "Speak No Evil", "Fight The Power", "Sneakin Up Behind You", and the great "How Long" – which features the famous "Betcha Got A Chick On The Side" sampled by Salt N Pepa!

Working on long tracks in an unfettered setting, Rollins' hits one of those rare moments of genius where he can turn his solo over and over again – never losing interest, and always opening up new territory – at a level that easily matches the oft-made claim that he's one of the greatest tenor talents ever on the tenor sax! The album features only 3 long tracks, all dominated by masterful work by Rollins – and titles include "Oleo", "Dearly Beloved", and "Doxy".

Ruffin & Kendrick — Ruffin & Kendrick ... LP
RCA, 1987. Very Good+ .... $1.99
A late 80s duo set from former Temptations David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks! The Ruffin & Kendrick album for RCA (we didn't leave the -s off Eddie's last name, that's how he was billed at the time) finds both in excellent form vocally, and rather than making a neo-classic Motown vibe for the record, the production is very much in the 80s modern soul mode of bigger hits of the day. It's got bright synth soul, a bit of boogie, and other other mid-to-late 80s modes that should have made this one a real win commercially – especially given the soulful weight and importance of the singers and genuine emotion in their performances. Titles include "I Couldn't Believe It", "Ordinary Girl", "One More For The Lonely Hearts Club", a cover of "Family Affair", "Goodnight Pillow".
