new Mick Ronson — Play Don't Worry (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Dead Quick (UK), 1975. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Catchy glam pop from guitarist Mick Ronson – the blazing player best remembered for his work with Bowie, here blending punchy riffs and heavier sounds with bubbly hooks and playful production touches. Our favorite tunes showcase the heavy guitar fuzz, but the oddball cutesy songs are endearing in their strange way. Ronson kind of throws a bunch of stuff at the wall here, and the stuff that sticks gets you nodding your head and smiling at the more innocuous touches. Titles include "Billy Porter", "This Is For You", a weird, piano peppered cover of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat", "Empty Bed", "This Is For You", "Woman" and more. This CD version includes 9 bonus tracks, which include Mick's version of "Life On Mars", "I'd Rather Be Me", "28 Days Jam" and more.

Lorez Alexandria — I'll Never Stop Loving You ... CD
Muse, 1992. Used .... $7.99
A beautiful later set from Lorez Alexandria – produced by Houston Person, and put together with a sensitivity that really stands out! Although Lorez always sparkles on tunes that swing, she really rises to the occasion even more here on the ballads – really gentle tunes that are taken in a laidback, personal sort of way – sometimes stretching out to the 10 minute mark, and presented by Lorez in a way that's open, unhurried, and a far cry from the usual quick take on an evergreen standard. The group features the great Gildo Mahones on piano – plus Herman Riley on tenor, Grant Geissman on guitar, Andy Simpkins on bass, and Sherman Ferguson on drums. Mahones handled the arrangements – always a plus – and titles include "I Should Care", "Love Walked In", "I'll Never Stop Loving You", "No Moon At All", "All My Life", "For All We Know", and "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning".

Aurra — Satisfaction (main, inst)/My Lovin Is For You (inst) ... 12-inch
Family Groove, 1984. New Copy .... $12.99
Rare work from Aurra – recorded right at the tail end of their years at Salsoul Records, and with a groove that's still very tight and in the pocket1 "Satisfaction" is a bassy groover that has plenty of bump way down at the bottom – that leaner groove Aurra used near the end, with lots of bass quick-stepping tightly underneath the lyrics – with almost a roller skating vibe! "Lovin Is For You" is mellower, but equally bassy – a nice track to kick back to, yet never lose your groove!
(Limited numbered edition of 500 copies – on super-heavy vinyl!)

Beach Boys — Smiley Smile (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Brother/Capitol (Japan), 1967. Used .... $8.99
The slimmed-down, single LP effort that Capitol issued after the collapse of the legendary Smile album – and a pretty sublime set nonetheless! Sure, some might argue that you can't enjoy Brian Wilson's genius until you've listened to 20 bootlegs of the sessions with dozens of takes on the tunes – but honestly, this slim little set is more than enough to prove to us that the man's a genius – and it's filled with really wonderful tunes that still stand as some of the most incredible moments in 60s pop! Production is amazing, vocals are wonderful, and the quick changes of theme and setting really keep things interesting – all without making us feel like we're getting hit over the head with some cheap gimmicks. Titles include "Vegetables", "Heroes & Villains", "Fall", "Little Pad", "With Me Tonight", and "Wind Chimes".
(Out of print. Booklet has some staining and rippling from moisture.)

Big Boss Man — Winner ... CD
Blow Up (UK), 2005. Used .... $6.99
It's been a few years since we last heard from Big Boss Man – but it's been well worth the wait, as these guys know how to cook up a mod groove better than just about anyone else! Winner's got a sound that takes us back to the swinginest days of London in the 60s – Hammond wailing over some snapping mod rhythms – sometimes instrumental, sometimes topped off by slightly psychedelic vocals that expand the sound even more. In the past few years, these guys have really grown a heck of a lot – and have managed to pick up some Latin influences that sit nicely alongside their straighter inspirations from jazz, soul, R&B, and 60s mod rock – making for an album of many surprises, and an expansive sound that's way more than just a quick retro-styled groove! Titles include "Kelvin Stardust", "Fall In Fall Out", "Complicated Lady", "Reach Out", "Oh My Gawd", "Boogaloo", "Fever Special", "Everybody Boogaloo", "The Hawk", and "Got It So Bad".

Andre Cymone — AC ... LP
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint- .... $5.99
The best of a handful of albums that the one-time Prince bassist put out in the early 80s – a record that made a splash via the great Prince-penned "The Dance Electric" – possibly a blessing and a curse for AC, as Prince was so huge at the time that the record going public was too quick to dismiss him as a clone! But don't let that stop you – as Cymone's got a groove that's all his own – and an 80s soul star definitely worth rediscovering. The percussive vibe is similar to Prince, but Andre's got a leaner, funkier style overall – virtually working as a one man band here, and handling most instrumentation himself – which brings a compact feel to the record that really comes through in the tightness of the grooves. Titles include "The Dance Electric", "Lipstick Lover", "Pretty Wild Lover", "Book Of Love", "Vacation", "Satisfaction", and "Neon Pussycat".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a few creases.)

Cyril — Saturday Night ... LP
Peoples Potential, Early 80s. New Copy .... $14.99
A collection of rare projects from southern club artist Cyril Walker – a great batch of early 80s groovers with a decidedly indie feel! The tracks are heavy on beats and keys – and the rhythms are on the more electro side of boogie – still nice and bouncy, with a definite ear for the dancefloor – but with a lean quality that strongly recalls some of the New York street soul sounds of the time – even though Cyril recorded the set in North Carolina! Some of the tracks feature female lead vocals – depending on the project – and titles include "Won't You Serve Him" by The Project, "Saturday Night" and "Will You Show Up" by Marcel Evans, and "You're A Star", "Let's Partay", "So Proud", and "Too Quick" by Mile High Pie.

Classic craft, though timelessly inventive. The spacey sci fi funk of the Nostalgia 77 collabos is as hot as you'd expect, as are the other diverse sounds at play here. Super Mama Djobo — Festival ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99
A sparkling live performance from this West African group of the 70s – an ensemble who hail from Guinea-Bissau, but share most of the best elements of Mali music from the time! The guitar work on these tunes is wonderfully deft – sometimes so quick-fingered and locked in with the rhythms, it feels like another instrument entirely – really matching the pulse of the ensemble's call-response vocals, which are also a really appealing aspect of the music! The sound is bright – West African music on its way to big exposure in the next decade – yet still nice and rootsy, and very spontaneous too – especially on the album's longer tracks. Titles include "Mortos Nega", "Julia", "Sociedade De Malandros", "Tamanco", and "Festival".
(Comes with a nice bonus insert too!)

new Roy Haynes With Booker Ervin — Cracklin' ... LP
Prestige, 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A monster! This is a stellar session that has Booker Ervin's tenor fronting a tight group led by drummer Roy Haynes – all with an amazing sense of rhythm that's made the album a standout for years! Ervin is playing in his best modernist vein, and the rhythm section features the excellent pianist Ronnie Matthews – who's playing here in a very funky modal style that makes for some really wonderful grooves. Haynes is the real star, though, as his lively, lyrical drumming breaks from any tight time constraints – and adds an extra-musical edge to the whole session with some quick changes and an undercurrent of lyrical energy. The group's completed by bassist Larry Ridley, also a key force in the sound – and the set includes the track "Dorian", a massive modal groover, plus the killer "Scoochie" – and the cuts "Under Paris Skies", "Honeydew", "Bad News Blues", and "Sketch Of Melba".

Jimi Hendrix — Come On Let The Good Times Roll/Calling All The Devil's Children ... 7-inch
Sundazed, Late 60s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue).... $8.99
Fuzzy genius from Jimi – two rare tracks back to back on a limited reissue! "Come On (Let The Good Times Roll)" is awash in fuzz right from the start – Hendrix moving at a mighty quick clip up and down the fretboard – and pushing the bluesy core of the tune way past what you might expect! "Calling All The Devil's Children" comes on strong too – with a rumbling, bassy bottom that almost recalls some post-punk intros – before Jimi comes in and sets the whole thing on fire with some massive guitar!

Jagwa Music — Bongo Hotheads ... CD
Crammed (Belgium), 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 13.98
They're not kidding about the title of this one – because the group are definitely a bunch of hotheads on the bongos – playing percussion at a pace that's pretty darn quick, while also throwing in some cool Casio keyboard lines too – all to create a groove that's earthy, rootsy, and pretty darn compelling! Vocals often move at an equally fast clip – and there's a great home-made feel to the whole thing – not exactly Congotronics, but that same really creative, individual approach to music. Titles include "Dunia Watu", "Jumba Bovu", "Zubeida", "Mpango Mzima", "Hesima", and "Cha Upele". Also features two bonus videos!

George Kawaguchi & Super Band — Super Drums ... CD
King (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $19.99
Japanese drum powerhouse George Kawaguchi leads a very hip band here – one that's filled with quick-thinking players who can really create strongly on the fly – matching George's boundless energy, but bringing plenty of their own elements to light as well! Kawaguchi's drums are back a bit in the mix, compared to some of his other albums of this time – but there's often a punch to the record that comes from the larger ensemble – a bit funky big band at points, but with more intimate qualities at others. Other musicians include Hideo Ichikawa on keyboards, Yoshio Ohtomo on alto, Hidehiko Matusmoto on tenor, and Isao Suzuki on bass – and titles include "Tappan Zee", "Feels So Good", "I Can't Get Started", "Isn't She Lovely", "Friends", "Fantasy", and a nice funky take on "Superstion".

Ed Lincoln — O Rei Dos Bailes (6CD set) ... CD
Microservice, 1960s. New Copy 6CD .... $89.99
Incredibly groovy work from Brazilian organist Ed Lincoln – a quick-fingered player on the Hammond with a talent to rival the skills of Walter Wanderley! Like Wanderley, Lincoln worked in Brazil during the early bossa years – and had a great ear for mixing up samba and bossa rhythms with organ-driven jazz – an approach that was groundbreaking at the time, and still sounds pretty darn amazing all these many years later – especially as it's one approach to the instrument that most American players have never been able to match! The organ lines are nice and clean, and often laid out over fast-moving percussion with lots of deep acoustic elements – all the charm and power of samba and bossa rhythms at their best, made even better by jazzy riffs on the keyboard. This amazing set brings together 6 vintage albums by Ed – all with original cover art and great mastering – most presented here on CD for the first time ever! The 6CD set features the records Orgao Espetacular (1960), Ed Linoln Seu Piano E Seu Orgao (1961), Album No 2 (1962), Ed Lincoln Seu Piano E Seu Orgao (1963), A Volta (1964), and Ed Lincoln (1966).

Metal Weeds — Sunshine Love (long, short) ... 12-inch
RCA, 1976. Very Good .... $9.99
One of those cool RCA 12" singles from the mid 70s – cuts recorded by groups who never made a bigger wave on the label! This is a great Canadian disco cut with a quick-stepping sort of groove – produced by Tony Green at a level that's a nicely lean take on styles that would explode a bit more fully in coming Canadian years.

new Tete Montoliu — Catalonian Fire ... LP
Steeplechase/Inner City, 1974. Very Good+ .... $8.99
Plenty of fire here – the kind of quick-witted piano work we've really come to admire from Tete Montoliu – who really hits a new level of genius on his 70s recordings for the Steeplechase label! Montoliu has this amazing way of hitting hard, with a real edge – then laying back and just letting things flow – kind of a shift between left and right hand emphasis that really makes for some breathtaking runs on the keyboard – especially with backing here from Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Tracks are nice and long, and titles include "Sweet Georgie Fame", "Blues For Perla", "Falling In Love With Love", and "Old Folks".
(US Inner City pressing. Cover has some ring & edge wear, with a small center split on the top seam.)

Janka Nabay & The Bubu Gang — En Yay Sah ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $12.99 13.99
One of the most compelling albums we've heard from Luaka Bop in awhile – a set of tracks that draws from Sierra Leone roots and 70s African psych – all recorded with an intensity and urgency that really drives the album along, right from the get-go! Rhythms are fast, but never out of control – and certainly not in the too-bombastic mode that you'd hear from more hip hop-styled African work of late. Instead, they've got this bubbling, quick-stepping quality that's really wonderful – fast paced amidst the more echoey, fuzzy-edged sounds on the keyboards and guitars – all held together beautifully by the vocals fo Amed Janka Nabay! Titles include "Somebody", "Rotin", "En Ya Sah", "Kill Me With Bongo", "Feba", "Ro Lungi", and "Eh Mane Ah".

William Parker Double Quartet — Alphaville Suite – Music Inspired By The Jean Luc Godard Film ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2007. New Copy .... $16.99
A really unusual project from bassist William Parker – a great tribute to the legendary Godard film Alphaville, done with music that's a surprisingly great fit! There's almost a jazz soundtrack feel to the record at points – a bit straighter than usual for Parker, but still with plenty of edge – although other tracks sometimes get a bit more outside and improvisational, making for a really nice balance in the record. The core group features Parker on bass, Rob Brown on alto, Lewis Barnes on trumpet, and Hamid Drake on drums – which is then augmented by two cellos, violin, and viola – shading in the sound nicely. Parker really does a great job of capturing the quick shifts, bold moments, and striking qualities that make Godard's film so great – and titles include "Alphaville Main Theme", "Interrogation", "Alph 60", "Doctor Badguy", "Oceanville Evening", and "Civilization Of Light" – plus two versions of the great track "Natasha's Theme", a spiritual soulful number with vocals by Leena Conquest!

Satin Chaps — Might I Suggest – The Satin Chaps (with bonus download) ... LP
Satin Chaps, 2013. New Copy .... $11.99 14.99
Mod grooves from The Satin Chaps – a group that's heavy on organ lines and horns, and who play in a soulful 60s groove! The cuts are mostly instrumental, and they cook along strongly with a sweet blend of sounds from the groove – horns that pack plenty of punch, but which are really sent home by the deft work on guitar and keyboards – the latter of which mostly comes across with a vintage Hammond-style feel! All cuts are originals, and mighty fresh too – different than the usual funk combo mode – and titles include "Funky Matador", "Cry Baby", "Dry Rub", "Jump Shout Shake", "Wet Leather", "Catch On Quick", "Hot Chocolate", and "Pigtail Park".

Shaolin Temple Defenders — Take It Slow ... LP
Music Action (France), 2010. New Copy .... $18.99
Hard to take it slow with the Shaolin Temple Defenders – given that these guys are one of the tightest funky combos working in the European scene! The set smokes right from the get-go – quick rhythms, bold horns, and burning Hammond – all to set a groove for deeply soulful lead vocals from the Lion Of Bordeaux – a singer with a sound that hearkens back to some of the legendary James Brown divas of the late 60s and early 70s! Pierre Petit plays some great guitar – setting an edge and casting out the rhythms at the same time – and titles include "The Duty", "Lonely Walker", "Mr Dandy", "Back On My Memories", "Take It Slow", "Growing Up", and "Starting Anew".

Chester Thompson — Mixology ... CD
Doodlin, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 15.98
Heavy Hammond from the mighty Chester Thompson – a smoking soul jazz set that's a real return to the sound of his Powerhouse album from the 70s! Thompson's jazz chops have only gotten better with age – and although he's certainly got a strong resume in funk and soul, we're really impressed at his dexterity on the organ here – working out these quick changes and long-spun lines that would be right at home on mid-60s Prestige Records! Yet most of the tunes are nice and tight, too – never too overindulgent, and a nice balance between groove and solo space as well . Thompson works here with Barry Finnerty on guitar, Joel Behrman on trumpet, and Howard Wiley on tenor – and Lonnie Smith guests on one track too! Titles include "Medallion", "Clockwise", "A Subtle One", "Sweet Sixteen", "Speak No Evil", "Sista Strut", "Mr T", and a nice version of "Moontrane".

new Townes Van Zandt — For The Sake Of The Song (with download) ... LP
Tomato/Fat Possum, 1968. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99
The great debut of Townes Van Zandt! On the level of pure songwriting, it's masterful – Townes was pretty much in peak form on that front even on the debut! The record is at it's best when it's at it's most intimate – simply letting his voice and acoustic guitar carry everything. There's some fairly adventurous production by Jack Clement & Jim Malloy, though – a bit out of character for Townes at his slightly later, more stripped down and iconic – but that's actually something we appreciate a lot more than we used to. Like the big budget studio recordings of Van Zandt's songs as covered by others, it goes to show just how sturdy and adaptable his songs are in different settings. Classic! Includes "For The Sake Of The Song", "Tecumseh Valley", "Many A Fine Lady", "Quick Silver Dadreams Of Maria", "I'll Be There In The Morning", "Sad Cinderella", "All Your Young Servants", "Sixteen Summers, Fifteen Falls" and more.

Tyrone Washington — Natural Essence ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A rare and unusual chapter in mid 60s Blue Note – the debut of tenorist Tyrone Washington, an up-and-coming talent from the hip New Jersey scene of the time! Washington's name may not have lasted long in the jazz annals, but at this important point in his career, he's working with a young Woody Shaw – also part of the Jersey scene – and together, the pair really make the album cook – stretching out with a soulful, spiritual sound that really points the way towards the indie scene of the 70s! Shaw's voice is a big part of the record, but Tyrone's still definitely in command – blowing his tenor with these quick flurries of notes that are somewhere in the Coltrane school, yet arguably moving already past him too – kind of a post-Coltrane vibe in the year before the great one passed away. Washington also wrote all of the album's 6 tracks – really fresh numbers that burn with intensity, and make the album as creatively inventive as some of the best Jackie McLean Blue Note sides from the time. In addition to Woody Shaw's trumpet, other players include James Spaulding on alto and flute, Kenny Barron on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – a very hip lineup who really make magic on cuts that include "Yearning For Love", "Ethos", "Soul Dance", "Positive Path", and "Song Of Peace".

Hedy West — Hedy West/Hedy West Vol 2 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Vanguard (UK), 1963/1964. New Copy .... $15.99
Beautiful work from Hedy West – a folk singer with a voice that cuts through to the quick – none of the sweetness of some of the poppier acts of the 60s, and none of the softness that you might get from commercial efforts – and instead a sound that's straight from the hills, and a bit like some of the best Elektra recordings by Jean Ritchie! West plays banjo along with her vocals, but uses the instrument in a way that's almost more like acoustic guitar – very complicated note patterns, and less of the rhythmic strumming that you'd get in a hokier effort – with qualities that are often very dark and brooding. CD features Hedy's first two albums for Vanguard – Hedy West, with tracks that include "Single Girl", "Shady Grove", "Drowsy Sleeper", "Fare Thee Well", "Fragments", and "Sweet Jane" – and Hedy West Volume 2, with tracks that include "Pans Of Biscuits", "Lady Beauty Bright", "Boston Burglar", "Farther Along", "Hubbard", "Run Slave Run", and "Poor Little Lost Baby". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – unissued tracks "Cotton Mill Girls" and "Who's Going To Shoe Them Pretty Little Feet".

A blistering set of bossa-tinged jazz – truly the cream of the crop of the Brazilian scene from the 60s and early 70s! The package is great both as an introduction to bossa jazz, and as a capper if you've ever heard any of the genre – an essential collection that not only features key tracks, but some rare gems as well – beautifully packaged, and remastered with sound that's way better than any of your old scratchy records! The approach here is wonderful – quick-stepping rhythms, soaring instrumentation, and a way of putting together a groove that's quite different than American or European jazz at the time – even during those eras when bossa was having a strong influence upon those scenes. And sure, in later years, some Brazilian-inspired projects from other territories could sometimes be a bit weak – but these cuts are the originals, and are filled with life, imagination, and originality that oozes forth from the very first note! 2CD package is beautifully put together, with a nice booklet too – and titles include "Birimbau" by Dom Um Romaeo, "Xibaba" by Airto, "San Salvador" by Tamba 4, "A3" by Som Imaginario, "Solo" by Meirelles E Os Copa 5, "Improviso Negro" by Sambalanco Trio, "Vento Bravo" by Edu Lobo, "Batucada" by Luis Carlos Vinhas, "Consolacao" by Tenorio Jr, "Like A Rainy Night" by Salinas, "Zazueira" by Balanco Trio, "Das Tardes Mas Sos" by Paulo Moura, "Bebe" by Eumir Deodato, and "Patumbalacunde" by Joao Donato.

Rough Guide, 1970s. New Copy .... $18.99
Nothing rough here – as the set's one of the smoothest we've ever heard in this legendary series – a tight collection of vintage tracks that really serve up an African take on the sound of American disco! Titles include "Dance The Body Music" by Osibisa, "Brand New Wayo" by Mixed Grill, "Kazet" by Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens, "Be Africa" by Bibi Tanga & The Selenites, and "Oh Yeh Soweto" by Teaspoon & The Waves.

DNA — DNA On DNA ... CD
Late 70s. New Copy .... $15.99 Early April, 2013 (delayed)
Amazing stuff from No Wave legends DNA – 32 tracks from long out of print singles, EPs and live recordings – many on CD for the first time ever! DNA was one of the most uproarious acts in that increasingly legendary NYC scene – featuring Arto Lindsay's scratchy guitar and haggard banshee wail of a lead vocal presence, those primitive Bowery funk keyboards by Robin Krutchfield, and thumping, metronomic bass and drums by Tim Wright and Ikue Mori. The band's songs rarely marched past the 2 1/2 minute mark or so, getting in-and-out for a quick catharsis. These tracks trace the range of the under-recorded group perfectly, from the raw punk squall of the early singles to the funkier, sinister post disco sound later on. Amazing, awe inspiring stuff from a scene that keeps on belching greatness! Great notes and photos, here too! Includes "You & You", "Egomaniac's Kiss", "Not Moving", "Size", "New Fast", "New New", "Young Teenagers Talk Sex", "Police Chase", "Cop Buys A Donut", "Nearing", "Low", "Brand New", "Horse", "Forgery", "A New Low" and tons more!

Andre Cymone — AC (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Big Break (UK), 1985. New Copy .... $14.99 Just Sold Out!
This Big Break remastered edition has 5 bonus tracks: "Fallin' Fallin", "Red Light", "The Dance Electric (Single Version)", "Lipstick Lover (12" Club Version)" and "Satisfaction (12" Club Version)".

new Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band — Gorilla (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Liberty/EMI (UK), 1967. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The insane debut of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band – an amazing late 60s Brit ensemble who were almost to music what Monty Python were to TV! This first effort by the group is a mad array of sounds and styles that come together with a great sense of play and joy – a real delight in quick turns, witty phrases, and parodic re-castings of earlier modes – inspired by dada work of the early 20th century, but also handled with a lot more of a post-modern feel overall. Most tracks are short, and many echo earlier music styles, filtered through a slightly psyche filter – and titles include "Death Cab For Cutie", "In San Francisco", "Jollity Farm", "Equestrian Statue", "Cool Brittania", "I'm Bored", "Piggy Bank Love", "Big Shot", "Mickey's Son & Daughter", and "The Sound Of Music". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks – including "My Brother Makes The Noises For The Talkies", "I'm Gonna Bring A Watermelon To My Girl Tonight", "Alley Oop", "On Her Doorstep Last Night", and "Ali Baba's Camel".

new Commodores — Hot On The Tracks ... LP
Motown, 1976. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early funk from the Commodores – back in the days when Lionel Richie could still get up and groove! We'll be the first to admit that we're sometimes put off by the group, given their later hits, but it's records like this that actually remind us how great they could be – a mixture of funk and sweet soul, done with an incredibly well-crafted approach, and enough of a blend of the two styles to keep things interesting! The album's got a wonderfully tight quality – never slick or too smooth, but just nicely put together – commercial, but not so much so that it loses its soul. Titles include "Quick Draw", "Just To Be Close To You", "High On Sunshine", "Let's Get Started", "Can't Let You Tease Me", "Come Inside", and "Thumpin Music".

A Northern soul winner – two killer cuts, back to back on a single 45! "Packing Up" has this great piano part that punctuates the groove right from the start – ringing out loud and proud, and setting the tone for Damon's quick-tempo vocals! Eddie Jones really shines on "Give Me Good Lovin" – a tune done with a vibe that's almost Ray Charles overall – slinky vamping rhythms on the bottom, and raw raspy vocals that are totally outta site!

new Dexter Gordon — Panther! ... LP
Prestige, 1970. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked US date from 1970 – a set that Dexter Gordon recorded during a quick stop home from his time abroad – really cooking away in the Prestige studios with a great little rhythm section, in ways that are quite different than his better-known European work of the time! The title cut's a groover that definitely matches the promise of its name – a slinky soul jazz number driven along nicely by a rhythm trio that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums. The group keep things interesting on other cuts too – even when Gordon's dominating with the kind of inventive solo lines he was forging in Europe – and most tracks are longish, with plenty of room for action. Titles include "The Panther", "Valse Robin", "Mrs Miniver", and "The Blues Walk".

new Quincy Jones — Big Band Bossa Nova ... LP
Mercury, Mid 60s. Used .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Perhaps THE greatest Quincy Jones album of the 60s – a hard-swinging batch of big band bossa tunes – and one of the greatest American takes on the bossa sound ever! Quincy really brings a lot of soul to the set – syncopating the bottom end of the tunes to really bring out the rhythms, and working with a jazzy flourish of horns that creates all these quick and clever little turns in the tunes! The sound's been heard most famously on the incredible track "Soul Bossa Nova" – an original by Quincy for the set, which has gone onto much greater fame through its use in the film Austin Powers, and a bazillion TV commercials! But the whole album's great too – and other tracks include "Serenata", "Lalo Bossa Nova", "Boogie Bossa Nova", and "Chega De Saudade".
(Black label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear, with waviness and paper separation along the opening.)

new Evelyn Thomas — I Want To Make It On My Own/Have A Little Faith In Me – Disco Recharge (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Casablanca/Harmless (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two disco albums from Evelyn Thomas – back to back on a single CD, with tracks from an unreleased third album as well First up is I Want To Make It On My Own – a Casablanca stormer from Evelyn Thomas – a set that makes mighty full use of her strong vocals for the clubs, but which also features some quick-stepping production from Ian Levine! There's a nice polish to the record, but in an older sort of style – so that the lead singer is respected when the lyrics are flowing free, yet the tracks are also more than long enough to step out with plenty of longer disco modes too. A few tracks have some nice hooks that would more than make them stand on their own as soul singles – and titles include "I Want To Make It On My Own", "Back To Reality", "Thanks For Being There", and "It's The Magic Of Your Touch". Have A Little Faith In Me is filled with tight long tracks that work perfectly with the bold vocals of singer Evelyn Thomas – grooves that build up long before the lyrics come into the mix – in the best style of club classics on the AVI label! Ian Levine's at the helm once again – guiding Thomas in the studio – but the arrangements have an even tighter punch than before – a nice touch of Chicago groove from arrangers Danny Leake and Fiachra Trench. All titles are nice and long – and tracks include "My Head's In The Stars", "Love Isn't Just An Illusion", "Have A Little Faith In Me", and "No Time To Turn Around". CD features three unreleased bonus tracks that are all mighty nice – recorded after the second album, but never released – including the slinky groover "Sleaze", plus "Summer On The Beach" and "Love In The First Degree".

new Big Boss Man — Winner ... LP
Blow Up (UK), 2004. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock

Truth & Soul, 2005. New Copy .... $4.99 5.98 Out Of Stock
Super-dope, super-slow funk from The Expressions – a really great change from the usual deep funk groove! "These Moments" slinks along like some 70s mellow soul instrumental b-side – still plenty funky, but moving at a pace that's never too over the top, with instrumentation that slowly grooves instead of rips along in quick riffs. There's a nicely breaking guitar over the track's stepping bass – and rhythm that hangs there perfectly in mid-air! "Money Is King" is slightly faster, but still quite laidback – guitar strutting out wonderfully next to a bit of strings – almost making the whole thing sound like some badass soundtrack theme!

new Don Patterson, Booker Ervin & Houston Person — Legends Of Acid Jazz – Just Friends (Four Dimensions/Hip Cake Walk/bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige, 1964/1967. New Copy .... $3.99 11.99 Out Of Stock
Two organ and tenor classics – back to back on a single CD – with some bonus cuts too! Four Dimensions is sweet soulful work from the legendary Don Patterson – a great Prestige set that has tenorist Houston Person joining the organist's hip trio with Pat Martino on guitar and Billy James on drums! The tunes have that loping soul jazz sound you'd find in Person's best early work at the time – a groove that's got plenty of bottom, but also a nice dose of lyricism as well – and the use of Houston's horn here seems to bring out a different approach from Patterson than you'll hear on his sessions with Booker Ervin. There's a very slight hardbop element at times – and titles include "Sandu", "Freddie Tooks Jr", "Red Top", and "Last Train From Overbrook". Next up are most of the tracks from the album Hip Cake Walk – a massive pairing of the tenor of Booker Ervin and Hammond of Don Patterson – a record that's got a very famous cover image, and which marks for one of the greatest meetings of soul and modernism at mid-60s Prestige Records! There's no bass at all on the set – just lots of quick, tight rhythm lines from Patterson on the pedals of the Hammond – mixed with drums from Billy James, and served up with plenty of space for Ervin to open up on tenor – blowing with more soul than on some of his modernist sides of the time! Oddly, the CD does not include the title cut – "Hip Cake Walk" – but does include the other 4 tracks from the album, "Rosetta", "Sister Ruth", "Under The Boardwalk", and "Donald Duck". CD also features more Ervin/Patterson material from the same session – the tracks "Sentimental Journey", "Theme For Dee", and "Just Friends".
(CD case has a small cutout hole.)

Blue Note (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A funky explosion of dancefloor grooves – key 70s club cuts from Capitol, Blue Note, and TK Records – all packaged together in a massively upbeat set! Most tracks here move at a pretty quick clip – and represent the funkier side of the 70s disco scene – cuts that draw more from tight instrumental jamming than from smoother tricks in the studio! Almost all numbers have some sort of lyrics, but they usually take second stage to the rhythms – and a fair bit of the numbers are long, with timings that move well past the five minute mark. Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Way more than you'd expect from the title and cover – not a batch of familiar disco hits, but a treasure trove of club classics from the early 80s! Sure, some of the artists here are familiar – but most of them are from the indie side of the spectrum, and even the few big stars are represented by either non-hit tracks, or hard to find remixes that make this collection well worth seeking out! And given the early 80s focus of the track selection, there's less disco here than 80s groove and boogie-styled rhythms – heavy on the beats and keyboards, and still filled with plenty of great vocals. 20 tracks on 2CDs – with titles that include "Dreamer (long vocal)" by BB&Q Band, "Nights Of Pleasure (Nick Martinelli mix)" by Loose Ends, "You Can't Run From My Love" by Stephanie Mills, "I'm Out To Catch" by Leon Haywood, "Just Another Lover (12" mix)" by Johnny Kemp, "Fall Down" by Tramaine, "I Feel For You (12" mix)" by Chaka Khan, "Got To Be Real" by Selection, "Garden Of Eve (long)" by Yvonne Gage, "The Rhythm Of The Jungle" by The Quick, "Burnin Love" by Con Funk Shun, "I Need You" by Network, "Love Take Over" by Five Star, and "To Be With You" by Maxx Traxx.

Patrick Adams picks the best of P&P Records – and the man definitely knows what he's doing – given that he was one of the "P's" in the label's name! The tunes here are heavy on those cool spaced-out grooves that Adams did so well – that wonderfully hip, and very underground style he used after an initial few years in more mainstream soul – the trademark imprint of P&P, and the reason why the label's tunes have gone onto influence so many others over the years! The grooves are all sublime – from quick-stepping moogy numbers, to mellower tracks that stretch out in this great sort of gentle funk – all tied together with a united production aesthetic and lots of shared sympathies between the artists. Titles include "Dance Dance Dance" by Marta Acuna, "Jump Jump Jump" by The Musicmakers, "God's Greatest Gift To Man Is Woman" by Margie Lomax, "God Save & Protect All The Children" by Margo Williams, "The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" by Golden Flamingo Orchestra – and "Flying High", "Disco Juice", "Happy Music", and "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By" by Cloud One.

new Eugen Cicero — Marching The Classics/Balkan Rhapsody – Jazz Club ... CD
MPS/Universal (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Some of the grooviest classical piano work you'll ever hope to hear, thanks to the keyboard talents of the amazing Eugen Cicero – heard here on a two rare albums of material recorded for the MPS label! Back in the 60s, a number of European artists were experimenting with a blend of classics and jazz – but few did it as well as Cicero, who could hit the keys with the fluidity of a concert pianist, but make the whole thing swing like some of his best jazz labelmates! The set begins with Marching The Classics – which has Cicero really swinging some unlikely numbers – march numbers from Mozart, Strauss, and others – taken at quick tempos that really move wonderfully with very fluid piano lines from Eugen, and work on bass from JA Rettenbacher, and drums from Kenny Clarke. Titles include "Aida March", "Carmen March", "Boccaccio March", "Love Of The Three Oranges March", and "Radetzky March". Balkan Rhapsody features wonderful tunes sourced from Balkan folklore, but also revamped strongly by Eugen Cicero – to give them a swinging 60s piano sound overall! Great credit here goes to the members of his trio – Peter Witte on bass and the legendary Charly Antolini on drums, the latter of whom had a sense of tightness that really brought a new sense of energy to these tracks. Titles include "Der Gehort Mein Ganzes Leben", "Memories Of Clausenberg", "Suber Sang Ertront", "Dort In Der Ferne", "Ima Modenschein", and "Der Schlitten Eilt".

Titles include "The Dance Electric", "Lipstick Lover", "Pretty Wild Lover", "Book Of Love", "Vacation", "Satisfaction", and "Neon Pussycat". Massive 2CD version features loads of bonus tracks – 20 more numbers that include lots of mixes of "The Dance Electric", "Satisfaction", and "Lipstick Lover" – plus "Vacation (Andre Cymone mix)", "Let Me Kiss The Bride (inst)", and "Anything (inst)".

new Exit 9 — I Love You Love You Completely/Miss Funky Fox ... 7-inch
Brunswick/Soul Spectrum (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Two club stormers from Exit 9 – the obscure funky combo who only issued a single album on Brunswick Records in the 70s! "I Love You" is completely sublime – upbeat and very quick, but with a jazzy complexity right from the start – complicated rhythms that still soar forward strongly, with a vibe that's a lot more righteous than most tunes of this nature! "Miss Funky Fox" is a groove that definitely lives up to its name – a tightly funky number that snaps and moves with unbelievably sharp energy right from the start!

new Deak Ferance & Roger Conrad — Omaggio A Joe D'Amato E Marcello Giombini ... 7-inch
Cineploit (Austria), 2012. New Copy (pic cover).... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A great little record that's almost worth the price of the cover art alone – especially if you dig Italian horror films as much as we do! Side one is a tribute to the film Le Notti Erotiche Dei Morti Viventi – served up with a groove that would be perfect in a 70s giallo thriller – these cool quick-tempo beats with a nice undercurrent of sex – topped by keyboard riffs that echo Goblin or Keith Emerson – and all recorded with a very vintage feel! The flipside features two tracks in tribute to the film Man-Eater – the first done with cool keyboards that almost have a John Carpenter vibe – the second with an even spookier mix of noise and organ!
(Very limited package – on blood-red vinyl, with heavy cover and inner sleeve too!)

new David Hill/Little Esther — Wild Child (2 versions) ... 7-inch
Popcorn (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
David Hill rocks it hard on "Wild Child" – starting with a cool humming vocal at the beginning, then running into a quick-vamp mode that's peppered with lots of smoking guitar! Little Esther takes on the tune on the flipside – but gives it a much stronger soul-based approach – really belting things out with the sort of incredible vocals that made the young Esther Phillips an R&B powerhouse right from the start!

new L'Orchestre Kanaga De Mopti — L'Orchestre Kanaga De Mopti ... LP
Mali Kunkan/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Really amazing music from this very unique group – a Malian ensemble who mix together elements of Dogon roots with 70s electric touches! At the core, the sound here is very rootsy – lots of percussion and quick stringed instruments – played in cyclical rhythms that are extremely hypnotic. Yet there's also some weird production on the guitar and organ that space things out nicely – never too trippy, but with a slightly cosmic undercurrent that lifts the music up into space – giving things a slightly ethereal quality, even when grooving! Titles include "Kanaga", "Gambari", "Sory Bamba", "Sare Mabo", "N'Do N'Do", and "Kulukutu".

new Satin Chaps — Might I Suggest – The Satin Chaps ... CD
Satin Chaps, 2013. New Copy .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
(Note: CD says "promotional copy" on the packaging, but this is the formal release in this format by the group.)

new Souljazz Orchestra — Manifesto ... LP
Do Right (Canada), 2008. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A searing second set from Souljazz Orchestra – easily one of the funkiest groups in the contemporary Afro Funk underground! The set's even sharper than their first – really tight on the rhythms, which are filled with skittish guitars that cut a groove strongly – vamping and quick-stepping with a wicked sort of feel that brings back plenty of James Brown influence to a 70s African sound! There's lots of great horns and keyboards too – again played with a sharpness that's wonderful – a meaningful approach to solos that's not as extended as on other records, but often much more powerful. Vocals are often shouted or called – second stage, next to the instrumentation – and titles include "State Terrorism", "Kapital", "Parasite", "Interested Benevolence", "Amen", and "Grasshopper & Toad".

Sublime bossa jazz from one of the greatest combos on the Brazilian scene of the 60s – the crackling trio led by drummer Milton Banana, a really tremendous player no matter what the setting! The album bristles with energy from the very first note – virtually a blueprint for the sound of bossa piano in the 60s, with some great acoustic work here from Walter Wanderley on piano, and basslines that have a quick-spirited sense of timing to match Milton's drums. Tracks are all short and very tight, with a great sense of jazz – leaping along the grooves with titles that include "Samblues", "Noa Noa", "Primavera", "Samba De Verao", "Primitivo", and "Sambou, Sambou".

new Roy Haynes With Booker Ervin — Cracklin' ... LP
Prestige, 1963. Used .... $28.99 Out Of Stock
(Purple label New Jazz pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear, aging, and a small split on the spine.)

Afrique — Soul Makossa ... CD
Mainstream/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $29.99
A killer album of Afro Funk – with a very unusual origin! In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that situation – kind of a quickie project issued by Mainstream Records to cash in on the hit – but it's also an amazing bit of lost funk, and a record that's lasted for years in the hearts of beatheads! The group's a studio combo headed by Richard Fritz – and includes funky drummer Paul Humphrey, organist Charles Kynard, and guitarist David T Walker – all players we can trust to keep things groovy. The record does include a version of "Soul Makossa" that's pretty great – but even better is the breakbeat classic "House Of The Rising Funk", apparently the same version of the track that was issued on a 45 under the name The Chubukos. Other nice ones include "Kissing My Love", "Hot Mud", "Get It", "Hot Doggin", and "Let Me Do My Thing".

Allspice — Allspice ... CD
Fantasy/Dusty Groove, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.98
The only album ever from Allspice – but a hell of an incredible soul record – and one that's kept the group's name strong with collectors and rare groove fanatics for years! The album's on of the best Fantasy Records productions by Wayne Henderson and his At Home team – and like some of the others, is handled with a groove that's tight, yet plenty sophisticated too – light years from mainstream disco or common club of the late 70s, and instead informed by plenty of jazz and deeper ideas as well! The vibe is perfect – as heavenly and righteous as some of the best Roy Ayers club tracks of the time – which proves to be a perfect foil for the Allspice style of mixing male and female vocals – which again is often done in an Ayers-like mode. The sound is sublime throughout – one of those real treasures that should have been a huge record in the 70s, but was barely pressed up at all – and quickly forgotten about by the record company. Yet even after all these years, the whole thing sounds amazing – one of those albums we'd never part with at all! Titles include the groovy "Slipped Away", the funky stepper "Hungry For Your Love" – and loads of other great tunes that include "Love Fire", "Destiny", "She's A Lady", "I Don't Know", and "Give It Time".

Paulo Bagunca — Paulo Bagunca E A Tropa Maldita ... CD
Continental/Discos Mariposa (Argentina), 1973. New Copy .... $9.99
A Brazilian underground classic from the early 70s – mindblowing work that mixes heavy percussion with lots of guitar – in a style that's samba soul one minute, but heavier rock the next! There's a bit of a Jorge Ben influence going on at times – particularly in the way the record uses quickly-strummed acoustic guitar next to the earthy rhythms – but the overall sound is also a bit more fragile at times, and rougher around the edges, especially at its most expressive moments. But that quality only serves to make the album more striking – an instantly captivating set that needs no previous cultural knowledge at all! Really tremendous stuff – the kind of lost treasure that will have you scratching your head, but loving it at the same time! Titles include "Apelo", "Grinfa Louca", "A Mente", "Tramba", "Madalena", "Mensageiro", "Cristina", "Olhar Animal", and "Microfones Metalicos".

George Benson — Big Boss Band ... CD
Warner, 1990. Used .... $2.99
George Benson more than earns the title on this one – given that most of the tracks feature backings from the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster – a great ensemble who really help keep things soulful throughout! Despite the date of the set, the feel here is a bit more classic than most of Benson's work from the time – as the group bring a full acoustic soul to the record – a swelling, swaying brace of horns that seems to push George's vocals a bit more than usual – past that simply sweet style that was the usual Benson bag. There's a range and depth here that's really surprising – a quality that goes past the hokey title, which might make you expect less from the record – and although there's a few brief moments that get slightly contemporary, these pass quickly in favor of a classic groove. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Without A Song", "Ready Now That You Are", "Basie's Bag", "Skylark", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing".

James Brown — Soul Syndrome ... LP
TK, 1980. Near Mint- .... $6.99
A rare TK Records effort from James Brown – very much in the best uptempo funk mode of the later Polydor years! The groove here is quite similar to those better-known efforts – grooves that are a bit quicker than a few years before, but still played in a core JB funky style – live and lively, with plenty of emphasis on the rhythms! Brown often referred to his style here as disco, but it's a lot more like some of the P-Funk progressions of the period – a mode that's more polished than a grittier funky generation, yet far from smooth club or disco overall. There's plenty of choppy little groovers that make the record great – and titles include the long cut "Rapp Payback", plus "Funky Men", "Smokin & Drinkin", "Stay With Me", and "Mashed Potatoes".

Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis — 40 Gradi All'Ombra Del Lenzuolo ... CD
Gemelli/Cometa (Spain), 1976. New Copy .... $24.99
A rollicking 70s comedy score from the team of Guido & Maurizio De Angelis – quite a change from the harder sounds of their more familiar crime soundtracks! The album begins with some short tunes that are plenty playful – almost a 70s take on some of the more whimsical melodies you might find in Italian cinema of the early 60s – such as in the work of Nino Rota. Other tracks start to shift the mood a bit, but in ways that are a bit more contemporary – sometimes using slight funky touches or keyboards, but then quickly returning to more traditional fare in the end. CD features a total of 28 short tunes in all!

Guitar riffs quickly alongside the triple-time groove – and the whole thing's backed by "Stay On Point" – another wickedly funky tune with an offbeat sense of rhythm!

DJ Shadow — Total Breakdown – Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era 1992 to 1996 ... CD
Reconstruction Productions, Early/Mid 90s. New Copy .... $16.99
A great set of archival DJ Shadow instros from the early-to-mid 90s – from back when his primary means of production was the Akai MPC sampler – along with his endless arsenal of vinyl and limitless creative inspiration! This is formative, but essential material for fans of classic Shadow. It's a superior follow up to the 4 Track Era compilation, and a solid blueprint for his very best work to come! El Rego — El Rego (plus bonus 45 & download) ... LP
Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy LP & 7 Inch .... $16.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea".

Giorgio Gaslini — Le Sorelle (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 1969. New Copy .... $22.99
A late 60s score by Giorgio Gaslini – his work for the 1969 erotic film Le Sorelle – one with some subtle piano and strings-led sweetness, and some groovier, kind of loungey numbers, too! We know little about the film, but we'd wager that subtlety isn't a strength – which makes Gaslini's compositions all the more impressive in the quieter movements, but there's some more dramatic and stripped down jazzy bits that are also quite impressive. Includes some vocalizations by the always great Edda Dell'Orso, too. Titles include "Memory", "Le Rose Blu", "Quicksilver", "Diana", "Alex", "Voce Di Strato Psicologico", "Bliss", "Una Distesa Di Desideri", "Qualcosa Di Incomprensible" and more. Marvin Gaye — Here, My Dear ... CD
Motown, 1978. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98
Wonderful stuff – and one of our favorite-ever Marvin Gaye albums! This is the legendary two-record set that Marvin wrote and recorded as an alimony payment to his ex-wife Anna Gordy (the story's pretty long, and we won't get into it here – suffice it to say that when stars get a divorce, watch out!) Although the album was thought of as a no-brainer quickie at the time – and predicted to fail so that Anna wouldn't get any cash from it – the record is an extremely well-crafted one, filled with extremely personal songs that also have a warm soulful finish, in the style of Marvin's work on the LP I Want You (which is kind of a nice bookend to this one – as it was an extended love poem to the young girlfriend that caused him to split up with Anna!) Hard and soulful, the record's a searing testimony to the relationship between Marvin and Anna, and a painful document of the troubles between them – set to some mellow grooves that are easily some of Marvin's greatest of the 70s! The set's filled with great "lost" Marvin Gay songs, too – like "Sparrow", "When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Anger", "You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You", and "Time to Get it Together".

Wonderful lost work from the great Benny Golson – and some of the hippest jazz you can find in a large format group! The tracks are familiar – "Out Of Nowhere", "Quicksilver", "Stella By Starlight", "Autumn Leaves" – but wait until you hear how Golson put them together!

Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza — Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza ... CD
Cinevox/Bella Casa (UK), 1965. New Copy .... $13.99
One of the most obscure chapters in the career of Ennio Morricone – important avant garde work recorded in the mid 60s, just at a point when he was beginning to rise in soundtrack fame! The ensemble is a key Italian modernist group featuring Morricone, Giovanni Piazza, Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, Gualtiero Branch, Jesus Villa Rojo, and Francesco Evangelisti – mostly classically-trained musicians, but working here in a set of improvisations that are extremely spare, and which are very much at the lower end of the sound spectrum. Many of the sounds on the set are right at the frontiers of hearing – and others, while more present, disappear as quickly as they emerge – further enforcing the mystery and mood of the record. And while the overall style is quite different than Morricone's soundtrack work, the group was clearly a key testing ground for his ideas of sound and space that emerged later. Titles include "Soup", "Scratch", "Settimino", and "Eflot".

Universal Republic/Fat Beats, 2011. New Copy 12 x 7 Inches .... $68.99
A 12 X 7" box set version of Mayer Hawthorne's breakout How Do You Do – with each track from the album paired with its own previously unreleased instrumental version – in individual photo sleeves that lay out as a full mosaic! The Mayer Hawthorne story was a strange one from the start – white producer/DJ crafting real-deal, moody, sultry throwback soul under a pseudonym that gets him signed to Stones Throw. The best news, really, is that he's still doing what we loved on the Stones Throw record and singles. Skirting both throwback Motown AND indie soul conventions, but winking ever so slyly at them, making strings sound scratchy, warm and well-worn, subtle horns to sooth and stir, his own vocals layered for a group-like effect. Bonus points for his use of the superstar cameo – he brings Snoop Dogg in to SING, not to serve as an obligatory rhyme cameo. Well played, Mayer Hawthorne! Includes "Get To Know You", "A Long Time", "Can't Stop" with Snoop, "Finally Falling", "Hooked", "You Called Me", "No Strings", "Dreaming", "The Walk" and more. Comes in a heavy duty box – which also includes a custom display sheet that can hold all 12 singles. Beautiful!

Soaring, righteous sounds from Elvin Jones – an early 80s session, but one that cooks as strongly as his most soulful albums from the 70s! In fact, there's almost a focus or tightness here that could sometimes be missing from other Jones albums – a really bold, sharp use of the group's excellent quintet lineup – Dave Liebman on soprano sax and flute, Terumasa Hino on cornet, George Mraz on bass, and Kenny Kirkland on piano – all players driven on by the kind of bold, never-ending sense of flow that Jones really picked up during his post-Coltrane years! Liebman and Hino are especially great – and titles include "Three Card Molly", "The Top Of The Middle", "Earth Jones", "Never Let Me Go" and "Day & Night".

A great little record that's waiting to be re-discovered! The album quickly tanked as the over-pressed soundtrack to an under-viewed film – but despite years in cutout bins, it's got a fresh quality that we really treasure! About half the album features cool instrumental tunes from Mike Leander – scored in that weird mix of touches that he was using in his "rock to easy" years – and these cuts are interspersed with vocal numbers by Paul Jones, sung in a dramatic style that's a bit Bowie, but with more blue eyed soul. Titles include "Free Me", "It's Overotherness Time", "I'm Alright Jackboot", "I've Been A Bad Bad Boy", and "Stephen".

Mindblowing work from Roland Kirk – a record that really pushes the boundaries of his music even farther than some of his earlier, and excellent, albums for the Mercury label! Kirk's really stretching out here – finding a space in jazz that's uniquely his own – modern, yet playful – creative, yet never overindulgent – and perfectly balanced to find a whole new sound of soul for the 60s! Things never get too far outside, but Kirk's reedlines are always breaking out into fresh territory – incredible tenor parts, and also some amazing work on manzello and stritch too, both lesser-known reed instruments that Roland employs to incredible ends. Other group members fit his vibe perfectly – Jaki Byard on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – each stepping quickly to catch the energy of each new twist and turn in Kirk's music. Titles include the sublime "From Bechet Byas & Fats" – plus "No Tonic Pres", "Rip Rig & Panic", "Mystical Dream", "Black Diamond", and "Slippery Hippery Flippery".

new Kris Kristofferson — Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends – The Publishing Demos 1968-1972 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $23.99 36.98
A dream come true for all of us who ever loved the incredible songs of Kris Kristofferson at the peak of his craft – his late 60s and early 70s publishing demos – never before released versions of some of his best songs ever in the raw, unvarnished mode we always longed for! It's amazing stuff, including many tracks that would go on to be Kristofferson standards – numbers that got a little too clean and glossy on some of his own LPs and as recorded by others, which is what makes this compilation such a revelation. A genuine coup for our friends at Light In The Attic and a presentation of some of our favorite songs of the era by anyone – done raw and real, the way we always wanted to hear them! The set's produced by Mark Linn, who is responsible for the excellent Karen Dalton archival releases on the Delmore label, and he does similarly great work for Kris. It includes an excellent booklet with reminiscences by Dennis Hopper and Merle Haggard, full lyrics and notes from Kristofferson – plus rare photos and liner notes by Michael Simmons. Includes "Me And Bobby McGee", "Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends", "Smile At Me Again", "Border Lord", "Just The Other Side Of Nowhere", "Slow Down", "If You Don't Like Hank Williams", "When I Loved Her", "Billy Dee", "Getting By, High And Strange" and more. 16 tracks in all.
(Limited edition and likely to go pretty quickly!)

Malemen — Express Male ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy .... $18.99
A great debut from The Malemen – a short-lived group in the recording studio, but one who spent many years on the southern scene as a well-travelled showband! The group have a more modern vibe here than they might on the stage – a sweet 80s groove approach that features plenty of tight basslines bumping up the rhythms, with keyboards following quickly in step – all while the group often do a great job of harmonizing together alongside the groove! There's a nicely varied sound to the record – one that goes way past the usual slapbass funk of the time – and titles include the nice mellow cuts "Baby Doll" and "The Love We'll Share" – plus "Shakedown", "Party Time", "Hard On It", and "Take You Out".

Jimmy McGriff — Electric Funk ... LP
Blue Note, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever – a sweeeeet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts – and a record that ranks right up there with the mighty Soul Sugar for sheer funkiness! Jimmy takes an upbeat and easygoing approach to the late 60s funk sound, with a nice, rubbery bass and the organ sound just killer – but would expect less from McGriff on that front? Truly funky and totally irresistible stuff, with sinister, measured moments that bigger and heavier pretty quickly - kind of prefiguring 70s blacksploitation soundtrack vibes in spots! The album's great all the way through – tight arrangements by Horace Ott, who also plays electric piano on the set, making for a clean, cool 2-keys kind of groove. Titles include "Spear for Moondog" (parts 1 & 2), "Tight Times", "Funky Junk", "Bird Wave", and "Back on the Track".

Moebius & Plank — Rastakraut Pasta ... CD
Sky/Water, 1979. Used .... $8.99
The first collaboration between Dieter Moebius and Conny Plank – and one of the best! The pair come together here in modes that are a lot more playful than some of the other German projects of this nature at the time – not as spare and sensitive as some of the others, and with a bolder sense of rhythm, and willingness to drop lots of odd elements into the mix – a style that almost makes the record come across with similar tones to the Brian Eno/David Byrne collaborations of the early 80s! Each tune has a basic structure, and a few key elements – fuzzy guitar, odd electronics, offbeat rhythms – and they each state their existence quickly, laying out a basic concept right away, then playing with it in cool ways as the tunes roll on. Apart from some found spoken bits, the whole thing's instrumental – and titles include "News", "Feedback 66", "Landebahn", "Solar Plexus", "Two Oldtimers", and "Missi Cacadou".

new Sun Ra — Lanquidity (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philly Jazz, 1978. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An amazing album from Sun Ra – and one of the most in-demand for Dusty Groove customers! The record's actually a bit funky – if you can believe it – and was recorded with electric keyboards, bass, and guitar (played by the mysterious Disco Kid!) The album originally came out on the Philly Jazz label and was quickly dismissed by many Ra fans for being a funk sell-out album – but over the years, it's become a prized album for its cosmic sense of soul and appealing jazz dance style. In fact, it's probably the album that most folks expect when they've heard one or two Sun Ra tracks on a funk compilation and expect all of his albums to sound like that. Titles include "That's How I Feel", "Where Pathways Meet", "Twin Stars of Thence", and "There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of)". Tough stuff, and a very unique Sun Ra LP!

Titles include "Bless You", "Honey Love", "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things", "My Baby Loves Me", "Honey Chile", "Jimmy Mack", "I Promise To Wait My Love", "Benjamin", "Tear It On Down", "In & Out Of My Life", "Live Wire", "Wild One", "Motoring", "Nowhere To Run", "Quicksand", "Love Is Like A Heat Wave", and "I'll Have To Let Him Go".

Rich Ristagno — What Would It Be Like To Be Rich? ... LP
Drag City, 1981. New Copy .... $18.99
A should-be private press classic from Detroit's Rich Ristagno – a record he had pressed up, but didn't see through to release – and a wild, but pretty amazing mix of murky post disco funk, soul and rock! Recorded quickly and on the cheap, you can sort of hear an aspiration to make a late 70s style groove rock record – something along the lines of the Steve Miller – but the threadbare production and instrumental accompaniement courtesy of area funk band Solar Flight gives it oddball, but compelling feel all its own. There's some primitive electronic touches, too, that bear unintended, but real similarities to groups like Suicide. A cool discovery from Drag City! Includes "God's In The Chips", "I'm The Poorest", "Women Thinkin'", "Eye Of Love", "Not Good Enough", "There Are People", "Coming From", "England", "Eileen Reach", "Richman Poorman", "Never At The Top", "What Is A Man", "See Me Hear Me" and "Trace It Down".
