Billie HolidaySongs & Conversations ... LP
Paramount, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... $5.99
An incredible record from Billie Holiday – and not really a proper sort of "album" at all! Instead, the set features the posthumous release of tapes from sessions recorded with pianist Jimmy Rowles and bassist Artie Shapiro – tracks that feature Billie singing in a looser mode than on Verve, but also talking a fair bit too! The conversation is what really makes the record – as it shows a bad-rapping Billie who's often a lot more self-possessed than you'd guess from the sadder sound of her classic recordings. Her voice is easily recognizable, but the subject matter is often quite surprising – and surprisingly well-recorded. Titles include "Rappin About Jimmy Rowles", "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", "Just Friends", "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone", and "Everything Happens To Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s issue.)

Rudy Ray MooreSensuous Black Man ... LP
Kent, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Rudy Ray Moore cut some mighty raunchy records in his time – but this one may well the be the raunchiest, and maybe the funkiest too! The album's an instruction of "the proper way to make love to a lady" – but done in true Rudy Ray style, with very down-to-earth language that really takes off from the first few sentences – serving up an array of explicit descriptions and references to body parts that make the most hardcore hip hoppers seem like they're singing nursery rhymes! The music is wonderful, too – very funky congas and drums, pounding away behind the vocals, with some funky guitar touches too – all at a level that really makes the raw lyrics move. Parental Guidance is highly recommended – but that's also part of the pleasure of the record, too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a split spine, light surface wear, and a pen mark.)

Clara RockmoreTheremin (aka Art Of The Theremin) ... LP
Delos, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A groundbreaking album of theremin music – recorded at a time when many people had forgotten about the instrument a bit, but at a level that takes the electronic force to a whole new level! The theremin first rose to fame on 50s sci fi soundtracks and weird mood music records – and although it had gotten use on rock albums during the psychedelic years, it never got the proper treatment it deserved until this groundbreaking set from theremin wizard Clara Rockmore! Rockmore plays the instrument here alongside piano from Nadia Reisenberg – really stripping away sci fi futurist stereotype of the theremin, as she takes on work from serious composers, plus other sources too – using the instrument with a sense of drama, and the virtuosic control of a master instrumentalist – on titles that include "Vocalise", "Song Of Grusia", "The Swan", and "Chant Du Memestrel". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mississippi reissue in a non-gatefold cover, with insert. Cover has a small light smudge from sticker removal at the top left corner.)

✨✧ Action BronsonMr Wonderful ... LP
Atlantic/Vice, 2015. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Action Bronson's first proper full length in a while, and his most high profile to date, released by Atlantic and Vice! Mr Wonderful sports allstar production credits for Mark Ronson, Alchemist and others – plys some strong guest appearances by Chance The Rapper and more – but make no mistake, it's AB's show! Action Bronson spits venom when duty calls, but he's also got a playful style that keeps it easygoing and entertaining. Good stuff. Includes "Brand New Car", The Rising" feat Big Body Bes, "Actin Crazy", "Baby The Blue" feat Chance The Rapper, "Galactic Love", "Easy Rider", "Only In America" feat Party Supplies and more. ✨✧ Gene ClarkRoadmaster (Edsel) ... LP
Edsel (UK), 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A warm, wonderful set of Gene Clark recordings from the early 70s – material that probably should have been issued as a proper album in the States back in the day, as sounds pretty much as solid to us as some of his great work in preceding years – but was issued only in Europe at the time! Roadmaster was pulled together from 1972 sessions that were essentially abandoned, but it's truly top notch Cali country rock featuring Byrds and Burrito Brothers in the sessions. Titles include "She's The Kind Of Girl", "Full Circle Song", "Roadmaster", "In A Misty Morning", "She Don't Care About Time", "Shooting Star", "Rough And Rocky", "One In A Hundred", "I Remember The Railroad" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(1986 issue. Cover has a tiny rip on the opening and some light wear.)

✨✧ Free DesignKites Are Fun ... LP
Project 3, 1967. Very Good- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The very first album from Free Design – and the start of a mini-legend that's seen the group really growing in fame as the years move on! The group borrow some harmonies from earlier pop and jazz vocal groups, and work in a style that certainly nods to the sunshine pop generation – but with a more down to earth approach that's really wonderful and a lot more intimate – really unlocking the hip yet naive quality that's always made the group so unique. The original tunes here are maybe the most compelling – including "Kites Are Fine", "My Brother Woody", and "The Proper Ornaments" – but the group also does a nice job on remakes of "A Man & A Woman", "Michelle", and "Feelin Groovy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing. Cover has a hype sticker and minimal wear.)

✨✧ John LennonPlastic Ono Band ... LP
Apple, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The first true proper solo album by John Lennon – recorded after a few non-Beatles records with Yoko Ono, and at the same time as Yoko's much wilder album with a similar title! This one, though, is John at his best – very personal and exposed, in similar territory to Paul McCartney on his first solo record – and the whole thing is a fantastic testament to the humanity that Lennon always brought to his music, even at a time when some might have accused him of going off the deep end with some of his more experimental music. The record's got a relatively stripped-down vibe, although isn't entirely just voice and guitar – as other elements are brought in at just the right level to expand the sound without losing the Lennon at the core. Titles include "Mother", "Hold On", "I Found Out", "Working Class Hero", "Isolation", "Remember", "Love", "Well Well Well", "Look At Me", "God", and "My Mummy's Dead". LP, Vinyl record album
(Apple pressing with Bell Sound/SF etch. Includes the lyric inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Sex PistolsSpunk ... LP
Blank (UK), 1976/1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A record that initially circulated in under-the-counter status as an unofficial Sex Pistols album before the release of Never Mind The Bollocks – and a set that serves as a much-needed prequel to that punk rock classic! The tracks here are all studio material – certainly a bit rougher than the later album, but still pretty well-done, and showing a mix of early versions of songs and a few unique moments too – with changes in lyrics and these guitar parts that are simpler, but no less searing – and still far better than most of the group's contemporaries in years to come. Given the lack of proper Pistols recordings in their short, ill-fated history, the collection's an essential one – and titles include "Satellite", "Seventeen", "Just Me", "Feelings", "Nookie", "Lots Of Fun", "Liar", "Who Was It", and "New York". LP, Vinyl record album
(Pink and purple label pressing with LYN etch.)

Rough Trade (UK), 1982. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The great compilation of early 80s singles by Robert Wyatt – as timeless, inventive and awe inspiring as some of his best proper LPs – and essential Wyatt however you want to approach it! Titles include the original "Born Again Wyatt", but there's a number of pretty amazing cover's in the set, including Chic's "At Last I Am Free" and Ivor Cutler's "Grass" – plus "Caimanera", "Strange Fruit", "Stalingrad" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Vinyl has a mark that clicks on "Strange Fruit". Cover has some ring and edge wear, some price sticker remnants, some light scrapes and gloss wrinkles in front, and is bent a bit at the edges.)

✨✧ Miles DavisJazz Track (Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud) ... LP
Columbia, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Not actually a proper album – but still one of the greatest Miles Davis albums of all time! Side one features 10 tracks from Miles' amazing soundtrack to the film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud – with excellent work by French players Barney Wilen, Rene Urtreger, and Pierre Michelot, on haunting moody tracks like "Generique", "Lassassinat De Carala", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac", and "Dinner Au Motel". Great stuff – and with a wonderful sound that's like no other Miles album! Side 2 is equally great – as it features 3 classic sextet tunes – "On Green Dolphin Street", "Put Your Little Foot Right Out", and "Stella By Starlight" –peformed with Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Bill Evans in that amazing Kind Of Blue mode of perfection. Truly one of our favorite albums of all time! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Iftin BandMogadishu's Finest – The Al-Uruba Sessions ... LP
Ostinato (UK), Mid 80s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Timeless sounds from this legendary group – a Somalian combo who issued all this music only on cassette back in the 80s, and who finally get a proper presentation in a much more durable format! The music is at once ancient and contemporary – with plenty of echoes of older East African rhythms and unusual horn inflections – blended with occasional use of electric guitars or keyboards, but still at a level that never overwhelms the music in the sort of way that certain West African groups were hitting at the time – which leaves the cuts here nice and raw, and with an energy that really holds up brilliantly after all these years. In addition to providing the first proper format for this work, the set's also got some great notes too – and presents tracks that include "War Wayneey", "Umaayey Iyo Abo", "Wiilkii Aan Ku Waashee", "Shavdan Buulow", "Haba Ley Habaaree", and "Ruuney". Sun, Late 1950s/Early 1960s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Later issue of the first-ever proper full length album by Roy Orbison, recorded for Sun 1956, but not released until 1961! It's hard to imagine how rock and roll history might've been changed if this incredible record was release closer to the time of it's recordings, but it'll sound great forever! Includes "This Kind Of Love", "Devil Doll", "You're Gonna Cry", "I Never Knew", "Mean Little Mama", "Problem Child" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby DarinBobby Darin Born Walden Robert Cassotto ... LP
Direction, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An incredible late album from Bobby Darin – and a real treasure! The record was cut after Darin's mid 60s fascination with the work of Tim Hardin, most of which he re-recorded for Atlantic during that time – but it's got a similar style to the Hardin years, yet features some stunning original compositions by Darin. After the confidence of his early show days, it's amazing to hear Bobby D singing songs like this – filled with sadness, insecurity, and kind of a mind-numbing inability to cope with the times. Of course, part of this has to do with Darin's increasingly poor health conditions (he was predicted to live a very short life at an early age) – and the raw honest experimental quality of the album's a real testament to Darin's perpetual struggle to combine a strong professional bent to be a crossover entertainer with an increasing (and surprising) desire to emerge as a creative force on his own. Includes the sublime "I Can See The Wind", plus "Change", "Sunday", "Questions", and "The Proper Gander". LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisHeard Round The World ... LP
Columbia, 1964. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Great set that reissues material from 2 live albums that were never properly issued in the US – Miles In Tokyo, recorded in 1964, with Sam Rivers, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams; and Miles In Berlin, recorded in 64 as well, with the same group, minus Rivers, plus Wayne Shorter on tenor. The quality is as high as you'd expect – with that Plugged Nickel groove hitting on all burners – and titles include "So What", "All Of You", "Walkin", "Milestones", and "Autumn Leaves". Katie LeeSongs of Couch & Consultation ... LP
Commentary, 1957. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Fantastic stuff – and a key example of the penetration of psychoanalysis in the US during the postwar years! The tunes here are all vocal parodies of familiar themes from Freud – sung by Katie Lee in a way that's a bit jazz, but possibly a bit folksy too – very playful at times, with the dry wit that you'd get in some of Tom Lehrer's famous records of the same period. Instrumentation is arranged by Bob Thompson, who really emphasizes the whimsy in the tunes – and titles include "The Will To Fail", "Repressed Hostility Blues", "Gunslinger", "Properly Loved", "Real Sick Sounds", "Shrinker Man", and "Schizophrenic Moon". MadamSensuous Black Woman ... LP
Kent, 1972. Very Good+ ... $24.99 28.99
One of two albums produced by Rudy Ray Moore – the other being The Sensuous Black Man – which define the art of making love from a gender-based perspective. Like Rudy's Sensuous Black Man, The Madam's version features one side of "instructional" dialogue – very XXX-rated, in bitchy mode that verbally orders a man to make love to a woman properly. Side two features "Rap Session", kind of a Q&A session in which The Madam lays down a bit more knowledge about sex over some bluesy music. There's plenty of bits on here that have been sampled over the years – and the record was a big one in the early mixes of the Chicago house scene. LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has some light wear and a small bit of splitting on the spine – but this is a very nice copy.)

✨✧ Jerry FieldingWild Bunch ... LP
Warner, 1969. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly poignant score – especially when you consider that it was written for a film that was known for its graphic violence! Jerry Fielding's at his height here – drawing on his earlier work in jazz, yet weaving together colors and tones that work with really bold imagistic properties – almost visual in themselves, but in ways that are so different from the images on the screen – and which, on record, make the whole thing feel like it's almost an alternative movie in itself! The orchestrations are wonderful – hardly the usual western style, but not really crime, cop, or other 60s modes either. Titles include "Drinking Song", "Dirge & Finale", "Adventures On The High Road", "Main Title", and "Adelita". LP, Vinyl record album

Fania, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The Fania All Stars pay tribute to a form that inspired many of its players – but which faded from Latin vogue before the group was properly formed in the late 60s. The session's a nice bit of retro Latin, with some strong late era salsa touches. Titles include "Guajira Con Tumbao", a great groover, plus "Hueso Y Pellejo", "Me Voy Pa Moron", "Naranjo Y Lucas", "Isla Del Encanto", and "Vacila Con Tu Trago". LP, Vinyl record album

Bang, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Funky uptempo vocal group soul – in that "doo wop for the clubs" kind of style that a some east coast acts were using at the time. The record was produced by Michael Zager, and it's sometimes got a bit too much focus on the grooves to showcase the harmonies properly – but there are a few nice moments on the record. Titles include "Nice Guys", "Something Funky's Going On", "Do It" – plus 70's remakes of classics like "Earth Angel" and "Yes, I'm Ready". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... Out Of Stock
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sammy Davis JrI've Gotta Be Me ... LP
Reprise, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Sammy D's best albums of the late 60s – and a beautiful mix of modes that he explored on the Reprise label! The title track is Sammy's big hit "I've Gotta Be Me", but that tune's followed up with some nice groovers – like Sammy's versions of "My Personal Property" and "I'm a Brass Band" – both pulled from Sweet Charity, a film in which he had a part. Arrangements are by HB Barnum, JJ Johnson, and Richard Wess – and get very nicely jazzy in parts, an aspect that's further emphasized by Jimmy Bowen's great production. Other tracks include "She Believes In Me", "Sweet November", "Here I'll Stay", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "I've Got You Under My Skin". LP, Vinyl record album

An almost-accidental classic by Prodigy – a great solo project after the split of Mobb Deep, and a set that was originally intended to just circulate as a mixtape – but which got issued properly based on the quality of the tracks! Alchemist is a key partner here – and the tracks have this approach that's straightforward, yet sophisticated – that subtle blend that Mobb Deep did so well, but pushed into more of a 21st Century east coast vibe. Titles include "Down & Out In New York City", "Return Of The Mac", "Stop Fronting", "My Priorities", "Nickel & A Nail", "That's That", "Take It To The Top", and "The Rotten Apple".
