Edda Dell'Orso — Voice – The Most Beautiful Sound In The World ... CD
Bella Casa (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $13.99
The Voice is certainly the most beautiful sound in the world here – thanks to the vocals of the amazing Edda Dell'Orso! Edda's was THE voice heard in virtually all the best Italian soundtracks of the late 60s/early 70s era – that floating, dreamy singer who graced countless Morricone film scores, and also appeared on a fair bit of work by other composers too! And although Edda could also sing with some darker, sharper edges, the work here is all from the more beautiful side of the sound spectrum – and focuses on Dell'Orso's haunting wordless vocals, plus a few lyrical numbers – set amidst a backdrop of bossa rhythms, light instrumentation, and slightly groovy rhythms. The package features a whopping 21 tracks in all – with Edda's vocals on tunes that include "Con O Senzo Sole" and "Scacco All Regina" by Piero Piccioni, "Love Is A Woman" and "Let's Find Out" by Armando Trovajoli, "El Primo Baso" and "Delirio Secondo" by Ennio Morricone, "Eva's Beguine" by Roberto Pregadio, "Messalina Theme" by Giacomo Dell'Orso, and "Angelo E Giuditta" by Armando Trovajoli.

Fun Horns — Natural Music ... CD
Amiga (Germany), 1989. New Copy .... $16.99
A record that's got a lot more to offer than just the "fun" promised in the title – and a set with a much deeper feel than you might guess from its wrapping paper cover! The quartet is definitely heavy on horns – soprano and alto sax from Volker Schlott, tenor and flute from Thomas Klemm, trombone from Jorg Huke, and trumpet and flughelhorn from Joachim Hesse – all working here with only a bit of percussion, but mostly just crafting these amazing lines in space between their horns – in ways that maybe echo a bit of the sax quartet style of the time from the US, but which definitely goes way way beyond as well! Things are never too far outside, and at many times, there's this sense of color and tone that almost recall some late 50s/early 60s experiments from folks like Jimmy Giuffre or Art Farmer – with all the sense of swing and soul that might imply. Other numbers have a more contemporary feel – and titles include "Round Funk", "Primo Tono", "Permanent'z", "Kanon II", "Bluestekuchen", "3 Saxophonie Nr 2", "Free Notes", and "Largo Lapidarius".

Ennio Morricone — La Resa Dei Conti (aka The Big Gundown) ... CD
GDM (Italy), 1966. New Copy .... $24.99
One of Ennio Morricone's first groundbreaking scores for the western – a brilliant batch of tunes composed for The Big Gundown, handled in a way that mixed the typical western guitar-based themes with some of the maestro's other compulsions – like wordless vocals and isolated instrumentation amidst lush orchestral backdrops! There's barely any "spaghetti" on the plate of this one – as the sound is often quite lean and very clean – a real change from some of the more dramatic, romantic styles that were being used in American westerns. Titles include "La Corrida", "La Vedova", "La Resa Dei Conti", "Dopo La Condanna", "Rune Man Run", "Primo Deserta", "Corri Uomo Corri" and many more. 25 tracks on this great CD editon from GDM/
(Limited to 500 copies.)

Ennio Morricone — Opposte Esperienze (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cometa (Italy), 1976. New Copy .... $26.99
Wonderful work from Ennio Morricone – an obscure soundtrack that we somehow missed for years and years – even though we've always been huge fans of his music! There's a quirky, offbeat feel to the record at the start – some playful elements that bounce along with a slight touch of whimsy, but which are also offset by some more languid, mellow Morricone moments too – those slow-moving sexy sounds that can really make some of his best ones sparkle! The story features a violinist, and there's a bit of lead violin at points – but it's the compressed orchestrations that we dig the most. Titles include "Grande Overture", "Adagio Primo", "Largo", "Adagio Secondo", and "Allegretto" – and the CD features loads of bonus tracks too!

Andrea Pozza Trio — Jellyfish From The Bosporus ... CD
Abeat (Italy), 2013. New Copy .... $16.99
The title and cover are a bit gimmicky, but the album's a wonderfully solid effort from Italian pianist Andrea Pozza – easily one of the most lyrical players we've heard in years! Pozza's got this way of mixing depth with lightness – a quality that sometimes evokes that special mysticism of Horace Silver, especially on Andrea's original tunes on the record – which really sparkle with a sort of exotic quality. There's nothing ever too over the top about the set – yet the group really have a way of putting over something special, and with a bit more subtlety than some of Pozza's recent outings with singers for other labels. Titles include "Il Primo Dei Sette", "As Usual", "Tuttavia E Cosi", "Love Is The Way", and "Get Happy".

new Nas — Illmatic (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Columbia/Simply Vinyl (UK), 1994. Used (reissue).... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album, with "Life's A Bitch", "One Love" and "It Ain't Hard To Tell" – what more do we need to say? How about beats by Primo, Pete Rock and Large Professor? Did this one get 5 mics from the Source? Didn't that count for something at the time? At any rate, despite the subsequent ups and downs of his career, and battles with Jay Z, amongst others, this album still stands as an all time high water mark for microphone technique and lyrical skills, with production to match. Also includes "NY State Of Mind", "The World Is Yours", "Halftime", "One Time 4 Your Mind", "Memory Lane" and "Represent".

new Jazz Couriers (Ronnie Scott & Tubby Hayes) — Jazz Couriers Live In Morcombe 1959 – Tippin' ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 1959. New Copy .... $34.99 Out Of Stock
Primo work by one of the greatest Brit jazz groups of the 50s – the legendary Jazz Couriers, and their smoking frontline of Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott on tenor sax! The pair have a way of coming together that's simply beautiful – not the kind of "battle" you might have gotten from American tenorists a few years before – and instead, a way of collaborating on long-spun, beautifully-blown tracks that really expand under the two voices of the tenors – in ways that other hardbop groups might with just a sax and trumpet. Part of the group's success is their great rhythm section too – Terry Shannon on piano, Jeff Clyne on bass, and Billy Eyden on drums – a trio who really kick things into gear wonderfully on this previously-unissued live date! The material was recorded at a restaurant gig – nice and intimate, but with very good sound – so much so that the record is very much on a par with the group's famous studio sides of the time. Tubby Hayes also plays a bit of vibes on the record – and titles include "For All We Know", "Embers", "Tippin", and "Cherokee/The Theme".

new Santucci-Scoppa — Jazzissima – Italian Library Jazz Series Vol 1 ... CD
Black Cat (Italy), 1971. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Excellent obscure jazzy groovers from the groundbreaking team of Cicci Santucci and Enzo Scoppa! Cicci plays trumpet and Enzo plays tenor – and the pair had chops sharp enough to play with the best of the Italian jazz scene of the 70s, but which also graced more than a fair share of private "sound library" recordings of the same time. The grooves are nice and tight, and the pair play with tight rhythm backing by Franco D'Andrea on piano, Bruno Briaco on drums, and Bruno Tomasson on bass – in a great mode that mixes bossa, bop, and mod styles with effortless ease, and which sounds like a classic Blue Note 60s release during its best moments, touched with some of the electricity of the post-Miles generation! Titles include "Wipe Look", "Spirale", "Trip", "Run Run", "Pressa", "Pausa", "Disoccupazione", "Primo Turno", and "Deep Look".

new Ennio Morricone — L'Umanoide ... CD
GDM (Italy), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A weird later Ennio Morricone soundtrack – and one with some surprising use of electronics and keyboards too! The maestro has used electric instrumentation on other scores, but this one has a pretty different feel – a handful of tracks that have more of a future-sounding quality, fitting for the movie's sci-fi story – mixed with a few others that are more atmospheric, and with more familiar Morricone elements at play. Overall, the whole thing's pretty great – and the sound is really more early 70s than you'd guess from the date of the movie – no clunky 80s keyboards, and still more 70s analogue elements that have a nice degree of warmth, even when they're trying to sound a bit cold. Titles include "Estasi Stellare", "Un Uomo Nello Spazio", "Robodog", "Incontri A Sei", "Informale Primo", "Infanzia Evoluzione E Ritorno", and "Trasmissione Difettosa Rotazione E Rivoluzione".

new Dead Moon — Defiance ... LP
Mississippi, 1990. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
Dead Moon's third album – bursting into the 90s with Defiance – a record that arrived when some fellow Pacific Northwest underground rockers were getting ready to be flung head first into the mainstream, but DM remained defiantly underground! Even though this third album, they were garage veterans with root in the late 60s. It's amazing who raw, primordial and true to their own style. It's like they got gnarlier as they went on rather then going pop. Includes "Not The Only One", "Dagger Moon", "Revenge", "Johnny's Got A Gun", "Unknown Passage" and more.
