new Bobby Caldwell — Bobby Caldwell (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1978. Used .... $19.99
Bobby was one of the more unlikely soul acts of the late 70s – but thanks to some skillful keyboard playing and smooth vocals, he scored huge with the track "What You Won't Do For Love", a nicely compressed mellow soul cut that almost feels like ballad-style Earth, Wind & Fire circa 1975, and which has remained a perennial favorite. The cut's included here on Bobby's first album, along with the tracks "My Flame", "Love Won't Wait", "Down For The Third Time", and "Kalimba Song", another nod to Maurice White and crew, to be sure!

new Return To Forever — No Mystery ... CD
Polydor, 1975. Used .... $5.99
Hard grooving work from the middle years of the Return To Forever group – featuring the line up with Chick Corea on keys, synths & percussion, Stanley Clarke on bass, organ and more, Lenny White on percussion and Al DiMeola on guitar. As you'd expect from this crew, this is some of the hardest hitting cosmic fusion that the group ever cut! Titles include "Dayride", "Jungle Waterfall", "Flight Of The Newborn", "Sofistifunk" and "Excerpt From The First Movement Of Heavy Metal".

Tony Williams Lifetime — Emergency ... CD
Polydor, 1969. Used .... $6.99
A seminal jazz rock statement from drummer Tony Williams – one that has him stepping out quite far from his original "new thing" recordings of the mid 60s! The album's got a genre-forming sound that's incredibly fierce – a power trio churning of Williams drums, John McLaughlin's guitar, and Larry Young's free-thinking work on organ. The tunes are long and jamming, but also have a tight rhythmic focus that never gets too sloppy – and which virtually set the stage for a whole generation of 70s fusion players in years to come! Young and McLaughling are especially great – working here with Williams to pound out sheets of sound in a cosmic trippy maze of riffs and grooves, certainly enough to inspire the most addled rocker to head over to the jazz section! CD features the full 8 track original set – with titles that include "Sangria For Three", "Something Spiritual", "Spectrum", "Via The Spectrum Road", "Emergency", "Beyond Games", "Where" and "Vashkar".

new Roy Ayers — Soulful Vibes – Jazz Club ... CD
Polydor/Jazzclub (Germany), 1970s. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cool collection of work from one of our favorite artists ever – literally one of the guys whose music was so great, it inspired us to start Dusty Groove! The package brings together a really hip assortment of Roy Ayers' best work for Polydor in the 70s – really incredible tracks that merge together jazz, soul, and funk at a level that nobody else can touch – not just the sum of the parts, but a sublime fusion that's completely Ayers-like, and which has gone onto inspire countless other folks over the years – even though nobody else can ever do it this well! The track selection is great – way hipper than the usual best-of on Roy – and titles include "And Don't You Say No", "Moving Grooving", "Come Out & Play", "Magic Lady", "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing", "Vibrations", "Tear To A Smile", "When Is Real Real", "Together", "He's A Superstar", and "He Gives Us All His Love".

new James Brown — Ballads ... CD
Polydor, 1960s/1970s. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sure, the man's a great funk musician – but don't forget that he got his start in soul, and first wowed the crowd with his talent for putting over a mellow ballad better than anyone else! This great set features James doing some of what he does best – kicking back and taking it easy on a cut, working here with a set of standards and originals, including many tunes that are being presented here in rare "single" mixes, plus a few previously unissued ones. Titles include "So Long", "Lost Someone", "Prisoner Of Love", "That's My Desire", "I Wanna Be Around", "I Cried", "Sometime", "A Man Has To Go Back To The Crossroads", "Cottage For Sale", "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry", "If I Ruled The World", and "Try Me". 18 cuts in all.

new James Brown — Love Power Peace – Live At The Olympia Paris 1971 ... CD
Polydor, 1971. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin".

new Jack Bruce — Songs For A Tailor ... CD
Polydor, 1969. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wild batch of jazz rock tunes – recorded by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce, along with a host of like-minded luminaries that include Chris Spedding, Harry Beckett, Dick Heckstall-Smith, and John Hisemann. Unlike Bruce's first solo album – Things We Like – which was an all-jazz outing, this album features Bruce singing as well, and an overall approach that has more of a rock-based song structure – yet still many of the expansive styles embraced by the Brit jazz rock generation of the time. Titles include "Rope Ladder To The Moon", "Theme For An Imaginary Western", "Tickets To Water Falls", and "The Clearout".

new Jack Bruce — Things We Like ... CD
Universal/Polydor, 1970. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the best of the solo albums by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce – recorded immediately after the breakup of the band, with a great jazz-based lineup that includes John McLaughlin on guitar, Dick Heckstall-Smith on reeds, and Jon Hiseman on drums. The set's totally instrumental – and the choppy reed work of Heckstall-Smith is the strongest asset of the album, as he virtually sets the tone for a whole generation of European funky honkers to come for the next 10 years. Bruce's bass work is great too – and really pushes the album into some great moments, a few of which actually get a bit funky! Titles include "Over The Cliff", "Statues", "Sam's Sack", "Rill's Thrills", "Hckhh Blues", "Ballad For Arthur", and "Things We Like". CD features the bonus track "Ageing Jack Bruce, Three, From Scotland, England".

new Captain Beyond — Captain Beyond (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Capricorn/Polydor (Japan), 1972. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great batch of kick ass rock and roll tunes – southern fried, but done with a cosmic undercurrent that makes for a mighty weird approach! The drums are amazing – fierce right from the get-go, in a way that has made the record a favorite with break collectors for years – and the fuzzy guitars really step out strongly too – with just a slight southern twang, and a great edge that keeps things pretty funky at parts! Bobby Caldwell is in the group on percussion, piano, vibes, and bells – and he also co-wrote most of the songs on the album – and titles include the classic "Dancing Madly Backwards", plus "Myopic Void", "Frozen Over", "Thousand Days Of Yesterdays", "As The Moon Speaks", and "Astral Lady".

new Joe Cuba — Comin' At You ... CD
Seeco/Polydor, Early 60s. Used .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great early stuff by Joe – recorded a few years before he really hit big in the Latin Soul years, but still pretty darn tasty, and with that tight raw groove that shows that Joe's famous sextet was the sort of group that allowed the smaller Latin Soul combos to come onto the scene. Vocals are by Jimmy Sabater and Cheo Feliciano – and titles include "Joe Cuba's Mambo", "Pancho Foo", "Stuff N Things", "Tremendo Coco", and "Chichon".

new Mandrill — Composite Truth ... CD
Polydor/Collectables, 1973. Used .... $21.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although some of the albums that Mandrill made were a bit weak, and had too much hippy-dippy stuff, this one is one of their best albums, and has a nice hard funky sound that they didn't always match. The album includes the funky break classic track "Fencewalk", plus other groovers like "Hang Loose", and "Don't Mess with People".

new Thunderclap Newman — Hollywood Dream ... CD
Polydor, 1970. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Catchy dawn of the 70s rock that's rooted in hooks and grooves, but taken to the next level with some killer piano and keys, and production touches! The group's best known for the sublime track that kicks this record off, "Something In The Air", which was covered pretty faithfully by the Flaming Lips – but Thunderclap Newman's original is more timelessly wonderful. The vocals remind us of Pete Townsend at his best, and the whole thing's pretty wonderful. Titles include "Hollywood", (#s 1 & 2) "The Reason", "Open The Door, Homer", "Acidents", "Wild Country", and "The Old Cornmill". This CD version includes 6 bonus tracks of singles.

new Roy Ayers — Virgin Ubiquity – Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981 ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"!
