Various — Dome Cookin' 2 – Second Helping Of Hot Soul Platters ... CD
Dome (UK), 2003. Used .... $6.99
A tasty sampling of tracks from a label that's really starting to get our attention! Dome started out quite a few years back as one of the few strong UK indie soul labels, but early releases didn't grab us nearly as much as some of their excellent recent work – a range of tracks pulled from hard-to-find sources all over the globe, all unified in a real commitment to underground Neo Soul styles! The set features 17 tracks in all, with titles that include "Now You Know" by India T, "Can't Wait" by Kelli Sae, "If You Want My Love" by Incognito, "Keep On Blessing Me" by Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers, "Hey Young World" by Andreus, "The Real Thing" by Avani, "Something Special" by Donna Gardier, "It's Over" by Sinclair, "Sad Days (acoustic)" by Angela Johnson, "Wherever Love Is Found" by Richard Darbyshire, "Nostalgia (VRS rmx)" by Hil St Soul, and "Stories" by Full Flava with Carleen Anderson.

new Turks — Keen Records Sessions ... CD
Keen/VSOP, 1957/1958. New Copy .... $10.99 11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare LA doo wop from the late 50s – sung by a great quartet that features a young Jesse Belvin! The Turks were one of a number of groups graced by vocalist Gaynel Hodge in the LA scene of the 50s – including the Hollywood Flames and an early version of The Platters. But the sides here are especially noteworthy because of Belvin's presence – a warming, calming influence that really creates a magical sort of sound – one that goes past the poppier doo wop of the time, and shows some of the increasing sophistication of the genre. The CD features material produced by Bumps Blackwell for the Keen label – and is unique in that it features some full tracks – "Okay", "It's You", and "Father Time" – plus other numbers as "session takes" – "It's You", "My Baby", and "Father Time" – in ways that show the development of the numbers over a variety of different performances of the tunes!

new Various — Legendary Wild Rockers 2 – A Collection Of Rare Rockabilly & Surf From The 50s & Early 60s – Compiled By Keb Darge & Little Edith ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $21.99 22.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wild sounds from the early years of rock and roll – a heady brew of guitar-heavy instrumentals, soulful stompers, and more – all pulled from the hinterland of the rare 45 underground! The tunes here go way past familiar oldies – and even past the sorts of sounds that usually show up on surf compilations – because, as he does with funk records, Keb Darge has a great ear for the unusual – the sorts of odd platters that have always show up in his best record digging and DJ gigs – laid out perfectly here in a really overstuffed collection! Keb turns in nice notes on each track – and titles include "Honey Bun" by Larry Donn, "Ghost Train" by The Swanks, "I Don't Wanna Leave" by Deacon & The Rock & Rollers, "Gorilla" by The Shandells, "She's The One That Got It" by Allen Page, "Madness" by Rhythm Rockers, "Woodpecker Rock" by The Braves, "Let's Dance" by The Excels, "Bad Bad Boy" by Bobby Lollar, and "Lobo Jones" by Jackie Gotroe.

new Various — Red Robin R&B Story ... CD
Red Robin/Fuel 2000, 1950s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $15.99 16.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heady sounds from one of Harlem's hippest indie labels of the 50s – the Red Robin imprint, home to a rich array of blues, R&B, and vocal group numbers! The company had a relatively small roster, but really helped its artists find the right sort of groove – in some cases to flourish at a level they'd never done before, in others to get a great start before moving onto bigger fame elsewhere – but still always at a level that had them giving their best! This 2CD package features three dozen numbers from the 78rpm era – the kind of heavy platters that kept Harlem moving in the years between swing and soul – on cuts that include "Hard Rock" and "The Hammer" by Red Prysock, "Shake Baby Shake" and "Drunk Again" by Champion Jack Dupree, "Juicy Fruit" by Tiny Grimes, "Can't Do Sixty No More" and "Go Back" by The Du Droppers, "Daisy" and "Don't Dog Your Woman" by Brownie McGhee, "Doggin My Heart Around" by Sonny Terry, "Earthquake" by Charlie Singleton, "Bobby's Boogie" by Morris Lane, "The Man I Crave" by Sadie Birch, "I've Got A Feeling" and "Tippin" by The Topps, and "You Didn't Give Me A Chance" by Sandra Grimes.

new MF Doom — MM Food ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2004. Used 2LP .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
The bugged sci fi maestro MF Doom returns with the MM Food album – a full five years since the underground classic Operation: Doomsday, and a straight up tie with Madvilliany for the championship title of best Doom-related LP since that immortal set! As you'd guess from the title, this album has a running theme with food, each title funnier than the last, but stays fresh throughout the 15 tracks thanks to tight production, masterfully spliced samples, and a verbal flow that's cooked and spiced to some kind of freakish perfection. The great "Hoe Cakes" single gets served early in set, and it sets the tone for a truly strong album. We didn't think Doom would serve two classic platters in a single year, but he done did it! Includes "Beef Rap", "Potholderz" with Count Bass D, "One Beer" produced by Madlib, "Poo Poo Platter", "Fillet-O-Rapper", "Gumbo", "Fig Leaf Bi Carbonate", "Kon Queso" produced by PNS, "Vomitspit", "Kookies" and more.
(Second pressing from 2007.)
