Piero UmilianiIl Corpo – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Easy Tempo (Italy), 1974. New Copy 2LP (reissue).... $13.99
Sweetly funky and very slinky – this is one of the best early 70s scores by the great Italian composer Piero Umiliani! The record has lots of bubbling electric piano, rumbling electric basslines, warm acoustic percussion, and moody wordless vocals. At some level, the album sounds a lot like the contemporaneous work by the great Italian Fender Rhodes combo Crossfire – but it's also filled with a spacey madness that could only come from the pen of Umiliani! One of the best of the recent Easy Tempo reissues – and very nicely put together, with a consistent sound throughout! Titles include "The Body", "Tidal Stream", "Chaser", "White Sand", "In The End", "Free Life", "Stream", and "Dusken".

new Piero UmilianiLa Ragazza Dalla Pelle Di Luna ... CD
Easy Tempo (Italy), 1970. New Copy .... $9.99
Nice reissue of this rare one by one of our most popular Italian composers! The soundtrack's from an erotic film starring sex-goddess Zeudi Araya, but despite the kinky origins of the material, the music's actually got a lot more sophistication than you'd expect – and the score feels more like a Morricone cerebral one than a cheesy sexy one. There's lots of spooky instrumentation, dark string passages, and haunting piano or basslines. A few tracks are funky, but the real strength of this one is the dark moodiness, laid down by off-beat orchestral passages and tight electric solos. 26 cuts in all, with a very sexy package!

new Piero UmilianiLa Ragazza Fuori Strada ... CD
Easy Tempo (Italy), 1975. New Copy .... $9.99
One of the coolest Italian soundtracks we've heard in a long time – a wonderful set of tunes that moves from slinky, to easy, to groovy, and beyond! The tunes start out bubbling very spare and slow – with floating piano, moog, and other nice bits – and as the record progresses, the sound gets heavier, with some nice funky elements thrown into the mix! The whole thing's a brilliant exercise in understatement – not only one of the best soundtracks by Umiliani from the 70s, but also a perfect example of why we dig Italian soundtracks so much! Titles include "Volto Di Donna", "La Prima Uscita", "La Rinuncia", "Senza Tregua", "Nostalgia", "The Party", and "Maryam".

new Piero UmilianiMan & The City ... LP
Right Tempo (Italy), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $13.99
A hip set of swinging urban tunes – recorded by Piero Umiliani in 1976, in a mode that recalls American "urban" jazz tributes from the 50s and 60s. The difference with this one is that it's got a bit of a 70s sound – with some slight electric instrumentation, and washes of sound that feel a bit like they were lifted from a Lalo Schifrin soundtrack, an influence that's more than ok in our book! The work is quite different than some of Umiliani's mad 60s work – but no less great, and a welcome addition to his rich catalog of work. Titles include "The Man & The City", "Friendly City", "Hectic City", "Viaducts", "Uptown", "City Sounds", "Power Stations", and "Siena Square".

Piero UmilianiOde To Duke Ellington ... CD
Easy Tempo (Italy), 1962/1963/1974. New Copy .... $9.99
Sounds sleepy – but it's totally groovy!! The mad talents of Italian soundtrack genius Piero Umiliani are turned towards his love of Duke Ellington – and the result is an incredibly groovy batch of tracks that mix up jazz, electronics, and plenty of great keyboards! The bulk of the material on the set was recorded in 1974 – and it features Umiliani playign moog and ARP, in a strange sort of "tribute" to Ellington that takes the usual Duke tunes, and turns them into hard grooving little numbers, with lots of bubbling electronic bits and weird sound effects. The first cut on the set is a mad mad version of "Caravan" which leaps and churns all over the place, sounding funkier than you could ever imagine! As the set progresses, some of the tracks are more traditionally jazz-based, but everything is played by a larger group, and the groove is still pretty darn excellent! Titles include "Ode To Duke Ellington", "Solitude", "Dreaming Of Duke", "Jeep's Blues", and "Never Together".

Piero UmilianiQuesto Sporco Mondo Meraviglioso ... CD
Easy Tempo (Italy), 1971. New Copy .... $9.99
A fab little soundtrack from one of our favorite Italian composers – a lost gem originally issued in 1971, with a very groovy sound! The score has Piero Umiliani picking up a bit more funk than usual – working with electric bass and keyboards to come up with some totally great tracks that kind of pick up a sexy Euro funk groove from the Serge Gainsbourg generation, and give it some excellent soundtracky touches in terms of tone, color, and melody. The tracks are all pretty darn great – bouncy, sunny, and with funk at just the right moments – and a few nice numbers even have a bit of scatting vocals, an element that makes them all the more pleasing to our ears! Titles include "Mah Na Cowboy", "Holiday Inn", "Love In", "Il Mondo Dell Infanzia", "Luna Di Miele", "Pepito", and "La Nuova Frontiera".

Piero UmilianiRoy Colt & Winchester Jack ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 1970. New Copy .... $9.99
A rare spaghetti western score from Piero Umiliani – an Italian composer we usually know best for bossa or more jazz-oriented scores, but who sounds right at home in this genre too! The album's got a sound that really shows the full range of Umiliani's talents – a few western-styled numbers with guitar in the lead, but also a number of different styles too – quieter moments that are cool variations on the main theme – played with either organ, saxophone, or harpsichord – recorded with some cool changes and a great sense of play throughout. The CD features 12 tracks from the film's score – plus the vocal number "Roy Colt", which is sung by the group Free Love, and originally only issued on a 45!

new Piero Umiliani5 Bambole Per La Luna D'Agosto (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 1969. New Copy .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest soundtracks we've ever heard from Piero Umiliani – an incredibly groovy record from the very first note! The score's got a fantastic mix of groovy scoring, jazzy bits, and cool little vocals – spare organ lines that set the tune on most numbers, stepping basslines to set the rhythms, and scatting lyrics from I Cantori Moderni – a group who make the act of counting to 5 sound incredibly cool! The feel is quite similar to Umiliani's sublime Sweden Heaven & Hell soundtrack (and at one point, you even can hear the guy with the funny voice from "Mah Na Mah Na") – and the music is exactly the kind of wonderful stuff that first got us digging Italian film scores so many years ago. This great reissue adds a bunch of previously unreleased tracks to the original – a whopping 34 tracks in all – 14 from the original album, plus 3 stereo bonus cuts, and another 17 mono tunes. Titles include a few versions of the main theme, plus "Titoli Coda", "Luna Di Piero Agosto", "Bambola Omicida", "Interludio Azzurro", "Cinque Bambole", and "Danza Jazz Moon".

new Piero UmilianiLa Morte Bussa Due Volte ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 1969. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from one of the grooviest soundtrack composers ever! At the end of the 60s, Piero Umiliani wrote some of the best film scores to come out of the Italian scene – and this little gem, long out of print, is certainly one of them! The album's got some beautifully jazzy numbers – touched by all the right elements of whimsy and sexiness that make Umiliani's other work so great – and the short little tracks on the album offer up a blend of slinky themes that intertwine wonderfully, moving from groove to sleaze, but always handled with the highest of class and care! Titles include "Trappola Sentimentale", "Crystal", "To Seek", "Consequence", "Un Posto Per Un Addio", "Continuita", and the sublime "Bob & Helen", which has been a favorite of remixers for years! CD features 11 bonus tracks – for a total of 25 numbers in all!

new Piero Umiliani with Gato Barbieri — Una Bella Grinta ... CD
CAM/Cinedelic (Italy), 1965. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing set of modern jazz – penned by Italian film composer Piero Umiliani, but also played by a very hip group headed by a young Gato Barbieri! Although Gato's probably best known for his late 60s appearances on the American scene, and his 70s dates for Impulse and Flying Dutchman – his earlier work in Italy is all pretty darn great, and this set shows the budding modernist to be in very strong company with a lineup that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet and Franco D'Andrea on piano, plus bass and drums. Side one of the record features full orchestrations by Umiliani – still plenty jazzy, with some great horn passages and cool use of vibes. Then side two features Umiliani's music played by the small group with Gato in the lead – a really great mix of modes that make the soundtrack a real standout, both in the Italian jazz and film scenes of the 60s. Titles include "Jazz Alla Vivaldi", "Ballata Della Bassa Padana", "Brass Fugato", "Una Bella Grinta", "Lontananza", "Sequenze Autostrata", "Free Theme", and "Hammond Blues"

Mindblowing work from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 60s and 70s – a true treasure of tracks that more than lives up to the "psycho beat" promise of its title! One of our favorite volumes in this now-legendary series – a set of grooves that runs from 70s electric back to 60s groovy – with plenty of space in between! There's a number of cuts on here that feel like they were lifted from lost CTI sessions of the 70s, thanks to warm keyboards and spare, subtle beats – while others mix together mod 60s styles, and even bits of Latin and Brazilian influences! Soundtrack funk doesn't get any better than this – thanks to a head-expanding of tracks from the Italian scene of the 60s and 70s – served up with the usual ear for a great cut by the folks at Easy Tempo! new Various — Horo – A Jazz Portrait Compiled By Gilles Peterson ... CD
Horo/Deja Vu (Italy), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
A much-needed look at one of the hippest Italian labels ever – the legendary Horo Records, home to some of the most groundbreaking jazz in Europe during the 70s! Horo's never reissued their work – at least not yet – so this collection makes the first time that most of these cuts are showing up again since the 70s – an essential batch of work that not only features important material from Italian players, but also includes some sublime cuts from American artists as well! Horo picked up the torch of avant and spiritual sides after the BYG and MPS labels stopped recording as much of that material in the mid 70s – and as you'll hear on this package, the music is really mindblowing – especially given that Gilles Peterson has gone through the catalog, to come up with some of the grooviest numbers from the label – modal dancers, soaring spiritual jazz cuts, and amazing moments we're plenty happy to have out again. Titles include "Caravan" by Piero Umiliani, "Nuraghi" by Santucci Scoppa, "Big Bang" by Kenny Clarke, "Tropical" by Irio De Paula, "I'm So High (Paolo Scotti re-edit)" by Roy Haynes, "Moon Dance" by Steve Grossman, "The Satellites" by Sun Ra, "Costa Bruciata" by Stafford James, "Pastoral" by Giancarlo Barigozzi, "Polychrome" by Enrico Pieranunzi, "Blue Generation" by Oscar Valdambrini & Dino Piana, and "Chiaroscuro" by Martin Joseph.

Various — Trip? Just A Little Beat – A Taste Of Pure Psychedelia In The Italian 60s ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $19.99
Tripped out psychedelia from the Italian cinema scene – great stuff from the late 60s through mid 70s – filled with percussion heavy mod rhythms, loads of leftfield oddball flourishes, and pulpy grooves galore! This set was compiled by Carlo Bagnolo and Claudio Fuiano who do a terrific job of assembling trippy, but never too wild stuff by some of the heavyweights of the era, along with some less familiar names – and the tunes are total gems! It's a mostly wordless batch, with some surprisingly funky bass and percussion, loungey horns, strings and flute, and loads of trippier elements at the fringes! Titles include "She's A Born Loser" by Phil Clinton & Peter Smith, "Bali" (new edit) and "Donna Piu'" by Giorgio Gaslini, "2968" by Carlo Savina, "Danza Primitiva" and "Cinque Bambole Rosa by Piero Umiliani, "Blue Rhythm Festival" (new edit) by Piero Piccioni, "Mood" by Augusto Martelli, "Fai Presto, Fai Presto" by Gianni Ferrio and more. 14 tracks in all – a number of which are on CD for the first time ever!

new Various — Bossa Galore – Lounge At Cinevox ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
As is ably demonstrated by the large number of Brazilian-sounding bands to come out of Italy in the past 10 years, the bossa nova sound has always had a big big influence on the direction of Italian music. This cool set from Cinevox traces some of the roots of that influence – by focusing on the rich legacy of bossa-influenced sounds in Italian soundtrack music, particularly that of the Cinevox imprint, home to some of Italy's greatest scores of the 60s and 70s. Some of this work has been reissued before, but the setting of the package opens the grooves up even more, and the whole thing's sparkling throughout! 15 tracks in all – including "I Due Kennedy" by Carlo Savina, "Papaya" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Piedone L'Africano" by Guido and Maurizio DeAngelis, "Gungala Nido" by S. Brugnolini, "Il Maschio Ruspante" by Gianni Ferrio, "Il Costruttore" by B. Lauzi, "Bossa In California" by Marcello Gigante, "Bob & Helen" by Piero Umiliani, and the always-classic "Metti Una Sera A Cena" by Ennio Morricone!

new Various — Commedia Sexy All'Italia (book & CD) ... CD
Amarkord (Italy), 2007. New Copy .... $26.99 Out Of Stock
A really crazy little book – one that's filled with sexy images from Italian comedies of the 60s and 70s – and packaged with a special CD to match! The book itself is practically softcore porn (so be aware of that, you sensitive viewers!) – 326 full color pages with images from the films, most of which feature ladies in some state of undress. The production quality is quite high – almost at an art book level – so you might be able to justify this one as "art", even though it really contains very little information on the films – just lots of naughty pictures. But the CD's also pretty great too – and features 20 classic sex comedy themes that include "Sessomatto" by Armando Trovajoli, "Isola Tuttofare" by Piero Umiliani, "Fail Piano Fai Presto" by Gianni Ferrio, "Quel Gran Pezzo Dell'Ubalda" by Bruno Nicolai, "Curiosita Infantili" by Fred Bongusto, "Vieni Avanti Cretino" by Lino Fanfi, and "Rio 70" by Nylon.

new I Cantori Moderni Di Alessandroni — Modern Singers ... CD
Bella Casa (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
One of the key forces in the Italian soundtrack scene of the 60s – finally given their due in a CD of their own! I Cantori Moderni never really made any records on their own, but they were a key part of soundtrack work by some of the best Italian composers of their generation – including Ennio Morricone, Armando Trovajoli, Bruno Nicolai, Piero Umiliani, and Luis Bacalov – all of whom were lucky enough to have the group work on their music! The ensemble is headed by Alessandro Alessandroni – who himself contributed much to soundtracks of the time – and like their maestro, they've got a great way with many styles – from spookier mood music, to sexy erotica, to upbeat, groovy tunes. This 27 track package pulls together some of the best bits from the group's late 60s and early 70s work on Italian soundtracks – music by all the composers listed above, from films that include Theorem, Queimada, Le Foto Proibite, Sette Volte Sette, Lo Scatenato, Maddalena, L'Alibi, Don Giovonni In Sicilia, Metti Una Sera A Cena, Scusi Facciamo L'Amore, and 4 3 2 1 Morte.
