new Phil UpchurchDarkness, Darkness ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1972. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Plenty of darkness here from Phil Upchurch – those great tones and notes he worked so well back in the 70s – all with that near-perfect quality that made him one of the most in-demand players of his day! The style here is a bit different than some of Phil's previous work in Chicago – as the set was recorded on the west coast with support from players who include Joe Sample on piano, Arthur Adams on rhythm guitar, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Harvey Mason on drums. But that shift of locale hasn't dampened Phil's sound at all – and he's still getting a bit of hometown help from Donny Hathaway, who arranged a few tracks and also plays a bit of electric piano on the record. Other arrangements are by Nick DeCaro, and titles include "Love & Peace", "Darkness, Darkness", "Cold Sweat", and "Inner City Blues".
(Cover has a cut corner.)

new Phil UpchurchLovin' Feeling ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1973. Used Gatefold .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Phil Upchurch's best records – and one that's a no-nonsense batch of funky instrumentals that feature some really great guitar! Phil's dropped the Hendrix fuzz of some of his Cadet sides of the late 60s – and instead, he's working in a stretched-out chromatic mode that has bits of Wes Montgomery and George Benson – but which also has some of the more soulful undercurrents of the great O'Donel Levy! The album's nicely laidback, and never too slick or smooth – and other players include Tennyson Stephens on Fender Rhodes, Lucy Scott on bass, Steve Cobb on drums, and Derf Reklaw on percussion. Titles include "Another Funky Tune", "I Still Love You", "Washing Machine", "Sitar Soul", and "Keep On Tripping".
(Shrinkwrap has remnants of a sticker and a tear on the spine. Cover has a cut corner.)

new Phil UpchurchUpchurch ... LP
Cadet, 1969. Used .... $34.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album from one of the greatest talents on the Chicago soul scene of the late 60s – guitarist Phil Upchurch, a player with an amazing sound! Phil could work in worlds that were equal parts soul and psychedelia – making his guitar a perfect accompaniment for the best Chicago soul of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Minnie Riperton, and other greats of the time. This album's easily one of Phil's best – a mindblowing set of arrangements put together by the groundbreaking producer Charles Stepney – bringing together bits of jazz, rock, soul, and funk – all providing the perfect genre-blending space for Upchurch to solo! Given that there's no singer on the set, Phil's work on guitar is a lot freer than you're used to hearing – in a really great way, one that puts him in a space somewhere between Shuggie Otis and Jimi Hendrix! Brilliant all the way through, with tracks that include "Adam & Charlene", "You Wouldn't You Couldn't Be True", "Crosstown Traffic", "More & More", "Black Gold", "America", and "As You Said".
(Original blue label pressing. Cover has some ring & edge wear.)

George Benson — In Flight ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $2.99
Benson plays his guitar and also sings on some of these tracks. He is joined by Phil Upchurch on rhythm guitar, Ronnie Foster on electric piano & mini-moog, Jorge Dalto on clavinet & acoustic piano, Stanley Banks on bass, Harvey Mason on drums and Ralph MacDonald. Claus Ogerman arranged and conducted the orchestra. Tracks include "Nature Boy", Foster's "The Wind & I", "The World Is A Ghetto", "Gonna Love You More", Donny Hathaway's "Valdez In The Country", and "Everything Must Happen".
(Cover has some light wear & an unglued bottom seam lined with tape.)

Odell Brown — Free Delivery ... LP
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good .... $11.99
After starting his career out with his funky group The Organizers, Odell Brown moved into a phase where he would act as the lead soloist in front of larger funky groups – like the one that appears on this record. The band was put together by Gene Barge, and they have a great soulful Cadet records sound – perfect for Brown's searing organ style. The solos are very lean, and have a nice nice strong quality to them. The band features Chisoul players like Morris Jennings, Henry Gibson, Louis Satterfield, Phil Upchurch, and Donald Myrick. A few tracks have ensemble vocals – and titles include "Nitty Gritty", "Free Delivery", "Come Together", "Free & Easy", and "Sign Of The Ram". Funky and hip!
(Cover has some light wear.)

new Odell Brown & The Organ-Izers — Ducky ... LP
Cadet, 1967. Very Good .... $8.99
One of the best of Odell Brown's groovy organ jazz albums for Cadet from the late 60's. His groovy little combo – which features Artee "Duke" Payne on sax, Tommy Purvis on tenor, Phil Upchurch on bass, and Master Henry Gibson on conga – grooves nicely through short "combo" oriented organ cuts like "Get Off My Back", "Mirar, Mirar", "She's Coming My Way", "Tough Tip", and "No More Water In The Well". They play with a mix of funkiness and virtuosity, and with the same sense of humor as contemporary groups like the Jack McDuff quartet or Young-Holt Unlimited. Nice stuff, and one of the harder records to find by them.
(Blue label stereo pressing, with deep groove.)

new Oscar Brown Jr. — Mr Oscar Brown Jr Goes To Washington ... LP
Fontana, Late 60s. Very Good .... $9.99
One of Oscar Brown's great ones, recorded live at the Cellar Door in Washington before an enthusiastic crowd of hipsters! The record's a beautiful mix of soul, jazz, and folk – in the same Chicago tradition that spawned Terry Callier (although Brown's style has a bit more of a "show" feel to it). There's a lot of great stuff on here, and most of it doesn't appear on Oscar's other albums in studio versions. Tracks include "Call of the City", "Muffled Drums", "Maxine", "Brother Where Are You?", and more! Backing's by a tight little combo that includes Floyd Morris and Phil Upchurch!
(Light blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear.)

new Terry Callier — Fire On Ice ... LP
Elektra, 1978. Near Mint- .... $9.99
One of the great albums from Terry Callier's "second chapter" on record – a time when he was working for Elektra Records, and doing work that was a bit straighter soul than before – and also slightly jazzy as well! The record's kind of a mix of jazzy grooves and smoother soul – typical for the fusion division of Elektra at the time, where Callier's hard-to-peg work was relegated. There's some really great songs on the record – and although the arrangements sometimes lack the sensitivity of the Cadet scorings of earlier years, they're still pretty great from a modern soul perspective. Richard Evans is producing and arranging the session, and Terry's still got help from a lot of Chicago friends like Minnie Riperton, Eddie Harris, and Phil Upchurch – all of whom help to keep the album relatively strong. Titles include some really nice originals, like "African Violet" and "Butterfly", both of which are some of Terry's best compositions from the time – plus "Love Two Love", "Martin St Martin", "Street Fever", and "Be A Believer".
(Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has few creases.)

Bonnie Koloc — After All This Time ... LP
Ovation, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $6.99
Righteous earth mama vibes from our hometown sweetheart Bonnie Koloc. Bonnie was part of the original folk cabaret scene around old town here in Chicago, and this is her first album, with her gutsy, folky vocals and songwriting underpinned by a groovy rock-inflected backing band, that features Phil Upchurch on bass! Titles include "Don't Leave Me", "After All This Time", "new York City Blues", "Devil's Nine Questions", "Another new Morn", "Rainy Day Lady", "Jazz Man", "Victoria's Morning", "Got To Get What You Can", and "One Sure Thing".

new Rotary Connection — Hey Love ... LP
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good .... $24.99
A massively beautiful piece of work by "the new Rotary Connection" – a version of this groundbreaking Chicago soul ensemble which featured Phil Upchurch, Henry Gibson, and Charles Stepney – the cream of the Chicago production scene! Minnie Riperton's still in the band on vocals, and her work on the LP is similar to that on the legendary Come To My Garden LP. The album features the incredible track "I Am the Blackgold of the Sun" – a haunting soul anthem that has been a favorite of groovers for years, and which was later made into a house track by NuYorican Soul. A great album all the way through, and filled with loads of excellent cuts!
(Original Cadet Concept pressing. Vinyl has a couple of short clicks.)

new Ben Sidran — Puttin' In Time On Planet Earth ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1973. Very Good- Gatefold .... $5.99
A mad bit of funk and jazz from Ben Sidran – much more tripped-out than his later work! Ben's got a great bunch of musicians on the album – with either Tony Williams or "funky drummer" Clyde Stubblefield on drums, and Phil Upchurch on bass, laying down a nice dark groove on the best cuts – often with an offbeat funky sound that's made the record a favorite for crate-diggers for years. Ben's on piano, grooving in a number of different hipster modes – from LA sleezy to New Orleans soulful – and his vocals, as always, are compelling and catchy. The set includes the nice long groover "Now I Live (And Now My Life Is Done)", a monster track with a great slow groove that's been sampled a number of times over the years – and other cuts include "Full Compass", "Play The Piano", and "Think Twice".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has an unglued bottom seam & some edge wear.)

Soulful Strings — Groovin' ... LP
Cadet, 1967. Very Good .... $6.99
Seminal instrumental groovers from the Chicago Chi-soul scene! This great group was led by Chess/Cadet soul arranger Richard Evans, and it featured many of the instrumentalists who made Chess records so great – like Cleveland Eaton, Charles Stepney, Morris Jennings, and Phil Upchurch. The tracks have a nice lilting bass-heavy groove – and the set list includes the seminal Chicago classic "Burning Spear", plus "Soul Prelude", "Alfie", "All Blues", and "Within You Without You".
(Blue label pressing. Cover has ring & edge wear.)

Soulful Strings — In Concert ... LP
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+ .... $7.99
Given that the Soulful Strings were really just a studio side project of the Chi soul arranger Richard Evans, it seems sort of strange to have them cut a live LP, but the session, recorded at Chicago's London House, works quite well, and has a bit more lively feel than some of their classic studio recordings. The group includes Phil Upchurch on guitar, Bobby Christian on vibes, and Lennie Druss on woodwinds – and tracks include a version of "Listen Here", plus "Oboe Flats", "There Was A Time", "Pavane", and "MacArthur Park".
(Cover has some light wrinkling and edge wear along the bottom 2 inches.)

Soulful Strings — Soulful Strings Play Gamble-Huff ... LP
Cadet, 1970. Very Good .... $19.99
One of the grooviest albums ever cut by Richard Evans' Soulful Strings, and a tasty batch of tracks written by Gamble & Huff, years before they started the Philly International label. The tracks are great, with the kind of arrangements that made Evans a legend in the Chi soul scene – and most of the titles have some very tasty solos by the likes of Billy Wooten, Cash McCall, and Phil Upchurch. The lively writing of the Gamble & Huff team provides a perfect foil for Evans' sophisticated approach to soul – and we almost wonder if it was hearing him do these string-heavy versions of their songs that made Gamble & Huff go for a similar approach on their groundbreaking 70s soul work! Titles include "Together", "I've Got The Groove", "Deeper In Love With You", "Never Gonna Give You Up", and "One Night Affair".
(Blue label pressing. Cover has some wear, small splits on the top seam and spine, and some staining on the back.)

new Ben Branch & The Operation Breadbasket Orchestra — Last Request (portrait cover) ... LP
Chess, 1968. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hip album that mixes gospel and jazz – recorded in 1968 as a tribute to Martin Luther King. The album was put together by Jesse Jackson's Operation Breadbasket operation – but it really features a bunch of Chicago jazz and studio players, including Phil Upchurch, Charles Stepney, Morris Jennings, Burgess Gardner, and Ben Branch himself, whose tenor takes the lead on most tracks. The core of most tracks is moody soul jazz – but some cuts have vocals, with solos by Clay Evans and Sammy Lewis, and group vocals by the Breadbasket Choir. Titles include "Hard Times", "My Heavenly Father", "We Shall Overcome", and "If I Could Help Somebody".
(Blue label pressing. Vinyl plays with a few clicks.)

new Hubert Laws — Chicago Theme ... LP
CTI, 1975. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Hubert Laws' funkiest records for CTI – recorded with a full group funky style that's plenty darn great, and a lot harder-hitting than some of Hubert's more laidback sessions for the label! Arrangements are by Bob James and Laws – working here with a large batch of players who come together beautifully, almost in the style of a funky 70s cop show soundtrack! James plays keyboards, and other players include George Benson, Phil Upchurch, Stanley Clarke, Randy Brecker, Don Grolnick, and Ron Carter – on titles that include James' own "Chicago Theme", a great cover of "Midnight At The Oasis" with wonderful drums from Steve Gadd, who also kicks it nice and large on Laws' own "I Had A Dream". Other tracks include "Going Home", "I Had A Dream", and "Inflation Chaser".
(Cover has some waviness.)

new Harvey Mason — Funk In A Mason Jar ... LP
Arista, 1977. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Smooth soulful jazz from Harvey Mason – one of his strong 70s winners for the Arista album, and a record that really brings a new level of class to his sound! There's less of the grit in the grooves than you might expect from the down-home reference of the title – and in a way, the record's a similar shift to well-produced R&B as Michael Henderson or Norman Connor's work from the same time – a soaring, fluid groove that's still supported by solid jazz instrumentation, but which also has a nice dose of soul in the mix! Players here are a real all-star lineup – with talents that include Dorothy Ashby, George Benson, Ronnie Foster, Bob James, and Phil Upchurch – and most cuts have vocals, by The Waters and others. But possibly best of all is the production – which is by Harvey, and really wonderful – sophisticated and smooth, but never slick – a really careful balance that really puts him right up there with Norman Connors or Roy Ayers! Titles include "Pack Up Your Bags", "Till You Take My Love", "Funk In A Mason Jar", "What's Going On", "Set It Free", "Space Cadets" and "Freedom Either Way".
(Cover has a cut corner & a crease.)
Also available: Funk In A Mason Jar (plus bonus tracks) ... CD $13.99

Obscure soul LP recorded in Chicago, with lots of Chicago players like Phil Upchurch, Morris Jennings, and Louis Satterfield, plus background vocals by Kitty & the Haywoods. new Minnie Riperton — Minnie ... LP
Capitol, 1979. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
Minnie's last LP – or at least the last LP released while she was alive – and a wonderful batch of jazzy modern soul cuts that gives a good indication of the direction that Minnie might have gone in the 80s. The album's got plenty of great guest players – including Minnie's longtime fan/friend Stevie Wonder, plus Phil Upchurch, Jose Feliciano, Hubert Laws, Harvey Mason, Tom Scott, and many others – and production is handled by the usual Rudolph/Riperton team, with help from Henry Lewy. Includes the great track "Memory Lane", which gets endless airplay here in Chicago, plus the beautiful ballad "Never Existed Before", and the cuts "I'm A Woman", "Lover & Friend", and "Return To Forever".
(Cover has a cutout hole.)
