new Percy FaithCorazon/My Love ... CD
Columbia/Collectables, 1973. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
Sweet 70s grooves from Percy Faith – a snoozer of an arranger in the 60s, but a talent who picked up a lot for us in the 70s! Both albums feature some strong tracks in which Percy mixes strings and easy instrumentation with electric bass and some nice drum work by Hal Blaine or Earl Palmer – creating tunes that at once have a glossy sweep, but also a nice little bounce that actually makes for some nicely funky moments that sparkle with a soundtrack feel. Some tunes are easy – but there's some really nice ones on here, like Percy's cover of Freddie Hubbard's "First Light", or versions of "Pata Pata", "Enter The Dragon", "Corazon", "Crunchy Granola Suite", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Sing", "Kodachrome", "Pillow Talk", and "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia", all of which come off with the feel of some of the better tunes on the MPS Snowflakes compilation!

Marvin Hamlisch/Mongo Santamaria/Burt Bacharach — April Fools ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+ .... $6.99
A really wonderful soundtrack, with loads of groovy tracks! The film stars Jack Lemmon, and the format of the record is similar to the Odd Couple – in that musical tracks are interspersed with dialogue, to keep the feel of the progression of the movie. Side one has some especially groovy moments, as Percy Faith and chorus perform a great version of Bacharach's "April Fools", which then leads into Mongo Santamaria's chunky groover "La La La", and "Wake Up" by The Chambers Brothers, which is one of their nicest tracks! Other tunes include the instrumentals "The April Fools", "I Remember The Rain", "The Safari Club", and "Peter's Pad" – plus "Sugar Kite" by California and "Flame" by Robert John.
(Cover has a tracklist sticker, light wear, some aging, and some light stains.)

new Various — Spectrum – Thrilling 60's Film Noir Themes ... LP
Plastic (Italy), 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The folks at Plastic dig a little deeper than usual for this one, and they turn up a nice batch of cuts – some obscure, some better-known – to define the genre of 60's Noir. The 16 tracks on the compilation are a mix of crime/spy type tracks, moody jazz vocal tracks, and dark moody orchestral themes. Although some of the stuff is a bit funky, the mood is much different than the usual funk compilation, and has more of an overall spooky feel. Tracks include "Out Of This World" by Mark Murphy, "Crossfire" by The Hurricanes, "Ennloro" by Percy Faith, "Jesus Christ Superstar" by Armando Sciascia, "Goldfinger" by Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers, "Love For Sale" by Eartha Kitt, "Harlem Love Theme" by JJ Johnson, and more by Lalo Schifrin, Cal Tjader, Oscar Brown, and others!
