Savoy, 1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Martino plays in a 2-guitar quartet – with Bobby Rose backing him up on guitar, plus rhythm accompaniment by Richard Davis and Billy Higgins. The sound's definitely in the trippier, post-hippie style of Martino's work, with a sort of looseness and fluidity that you either love or hate, but a nicely swinging rhythm underneath. Titles include "Footprints", "Road Song", "The Visit", and "Alone Together". CD

Pat MartinoInterchange ... CD
Muse, 1994. Used ... $5.99 7.99
Later work from Pat Martino, but a set that shows that the guitarist has lost none of his fire over the years! The set's done with a relatively freewheeling sound – not free, but open, as Martino spirals out wonderfully with some very creative solo lines – often quite extended, and filled with the sort of rapid-fire creativity we've always loved in his work. The group on the date is a quartet – with James Ridl on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Sherman Ferguson on drums – but most numbers feel very dominated by Martino's guitar, which is a good thing by us. Titles include "Black Glass", "Interchange", "Just For Then", "Blue In Green", and "Catch". CD

Muse, 1972. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pat Martino in one of his greatest settings – live, in front of the kind of an audience where he could really open up! The set's a great marker of the growth that Pat experienced as the 70s approached – taking all the lessons he'd learned from his years gigging it up in the soul jazz underground, and using them to forge a more expansive, more cosmic approach to jazz. The tracks on the set are all quite long – with backing by a trio that features electric piano from Ron Thomas, and an overall sound that's exploratory, but never too out or trippy. Titles include "Special Door", "The Great Stream", and an excellent reading of "Sunny". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Trudy Pitts With Pat MartinoLegends Of Acid Jazz – Introducing The Fabulous Trudy Pitts/These Blues Of Mine ... CD
Prestige/ZYX (Germany), 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing stuff – even if we do hate the way it's packaged! This long-overdue CD brings together 2 of the rare rare rare albums that organist Trudy Pitts cut for Prestige in the late 60s, along with her husband, drummer Bill Carney, and guitarist Pat Martino. If you don't know Trudy, she's got a totally unique approach to the organ that hovers somewhere between Jack McDuff and Walter Wanderley, but which also grooves in a way that's totally her own. On this set of 19 tracks, Trudy plays most of the lead solos, and also sings a bit in a wonderfully rich soulful voice – very much in the style you'd hear if you caught her at a small club session in her native Philly. We've been waiting for this stuff to come out on CD for years, and we've been playing this CD non-stop since it arrived in our offices! Tracks include "Steppin In Minor", "Organology", "Siete", "Man & A Woman", "Teddy Makes Three", and a very groovy version of "The Spanish Flea"! CD

✨✧ Pat MartinoStarbright ... LP
Warner, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Spacey electric work from guitarist Pat Martino – a record that seems to be as concerned with sound overall as it is with the jazz stylings of Martino's guitar – and we mean that in a good way! The older modes of Martino's 60s soul jazz work are very far gone by now – but in their place is a new sense of space and tone, one that makes him a completely different player altogether! A few cuts get hard and funky – pairing Martino with the fierce keyboard work of Gil Goldstein – while others are mellower and atmospheric, with lots of moody sounds floating along. Titles include "Fall", "Nefertiti", "City Lights", "Blue Macaw", "Prelude", and "Masquerade". LP, Vinyl record album

High Note, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sweet live set from guitarist Pat Martino – recorded with a nice gritty feel, and just the right blend of organ and tenor that Pat would get on his Prestige Records dates of the 60s! The tracks are all nice and long, with the kind of open, freewheeling energy that we love back in the 60s soul jazz days when Martino got his start – and as on some other excellent recent dates, the move back to basics works perfectly for Pat's deep talents on the guitar – augmented nicely here by organ lines form Tony Monaco, and some especially tight tenor from Eric Alexander. The group's completed by drummer Jeff Tain Watts – and titles include "Lean Years", "Inside Out", "Side Effect", "Goin To A Meeting", and "Double Play". CD

Prestige/Real Gone, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A key moment in the flowering of guitarist Pat Martino – a set that has him really moving away from his soul jazz roots, into a deeper exploration of freer ideas in jazz – touched with a bit of Eastern philosophy! The tracks on the set are all quite long – played by a group that augments Martino with second guitarist Bobby Rose, plus flute and alto from Gregory Herbert, bass from Richard Davis, drums from Charlie Persib, and added tabla and tamboura that really help push the "Eastern" agenda of the set! Martino's solos are still picked out in a clear, clean style – but his phrasing is even more chromatic, and done with a searching quality that befits the album's inspiration from the Koran! Titles include "Distant Land", "Baiyina", and "Where Love's A Grown Up God". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige (Japan), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very groovy stuff from guitarist Pat Martino – and a record that has him breaking past the soul jazz roots of his early days with Trudy Pitts, into a more open-ended spiritual vein, well-suited for the "east" tag in the title. The record's not filled with a lot of Eastern instrumentation, but Martino's clearly been listening to Indian music – and the longer tracks have more of a modal feel that works great for his colorful tones on the guitar. Other players include Eddie Green on piano, Ben Tucker on bass and tambourine, and Lenny McBrownie on drums – and titles include "East", "Trick", "Park Avenue Petite", and "Lazy Bird". CD

Prestige/OJC, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first album that guitarist Pat Martino ever cut as a leader – and an excellent mix of styles that links his soul jazz roots with his later, trippier recordings! The group here is a sextet, and it features organist Trudy Pitts (who was Martino's boss at the time), plus flute, drums, and percussion – all stretching out with a really unique sort of sound! The tracks have a bit of an Eastern feel to them, especially when Martino stretches out on his solos – but they also have a nice solid groove that keeps them right in the pocket rhythmically. Titles include "Waltz For Geri", "El Hombre", "Cisco", "Blues For Mickey-O", and "One For Rose". Very groovy! CD

Right from the start, guitarist Pat Martino had a sound that was unlike anyone else – and that quality still holds strong on this overlooked later date – a Japanese session that shows that Martino was still working through a great range of new ideas in his instrument! The setting is subtle – a quartet with Marc Johnson on bass, James Ridl on piano, and Joe Bonadio on drums – but that format also gives Martino lots of room to move on his own – without any other electricity in the mix, and able to sometimes focus on single line moments that are clear and clean, sometimes play with these wider chromes that are equally stunning. The balance between Ridl's piano and Pat's guitar is really great – and titles include "The Changing Tides", "Noshufuru", "You're Welcome To A Prayer", and "Yoshiko". CD

Prestige/OJC, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent album from guitarist Pat Martino – caught here at a key point when he was breaking out of his earlier soul jazz roots, and going for a more complicated style that showed he was picking up a lot of spiritual influences from the Coltrane generation. The record's got a core group of players that includes Cedar Walton, Joe Farrell, Ben Tucker, and Walter Perkins – but it also features some extraordinary contributions from Dave Levin and Ray Appleton, who play some odd percussion on the title track "Strings". As a whole, the album's got some wonderful modal jazz moments – all acoustic, save for Martino's guitar, and nicely lyrical, without being too overindulgent. Titles include "Strings", "Minority", "Lean Years", and "Querido". CD

✨✧ Eric KlossSky Shadows/In The Land Of The Giants ... CD
Prestige, 1968/1969. Used ... $19.99
2 Eric Kloss albums back to back on a single CD – both under-discovered, and both totally great! Sky Shadows is one of the late 60s killers for Prestige by reedman Kloss – sublime material that was every bit as great as some of the bigger-name work for the label, but never really got its due! Kloss is sharper and more focused here than in later years – starting with a hardbop groove, but really reaching out with some inventive sounds of his own, and some great changes from the group! The inventive ensemble features Pat Martino on guitar, Jaky Byard on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and titles include "Sky Shadows", "January's Child", "The Girl With The Fall In Her Hair", and "In A Country Soul Garden". In The Land Of Giants is a crackling bit of modernist free play, with a very soulful edge – and the group includes Booker Ervin, Jaki Byard, Richard Davis, and Alan Dawson all joining Kloss as he hits his mid-period "exploratory" stage. His alto is super-crisp here, and although he's reaching out a bit more than on earlier albums, he never manages to lose the swing that made him sound so great right out of the box. Tracks include "So What", "When Two Lovers Touch", and "Sock It To Me Socrates". CD

✨✧ Eric AlexanderFirst Milestone ... CD
Milestone, 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent work from one of our favorite young tenor players! When Alexander first started out in Chicago, we'd catch him at southside gigs, either on his own or in Charles Earland's group – and we'd marvel at the richness of his playing, even though he was just an unknown young player in his early 20s! Since those years (not long ago!) Alexander's turned into one of the strongest voices of his generation – with a sound that's steeped in the traditions of tenor giants like Sonny Rollins, Tubby Hayes, and Frank Foster, yet which also has a great deal of youthful creativity. This album's one of his best so far – and it features Alexander in the company of a group that includes Harold Mabern on piano and Pat Martino on guitar, both super-soulful players who are a great match of the playing of the leader. Titles include "The Phineas Trane", "Stand Pat", "Night Song", "First Milestone", and "34 Was Sweetness" (Chicagoans will get that reference!) CD

✨✧ Eric AlexanderDead Center ... CD
High Note, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Another chapter of greatness from one of the greatest living tenorists in jazz – the mighty Eric Alexander, recording here in quartet formation with longtime partner Harold Mabern on piano! The album's got a fluid groove that's right up there with Alexander's best recent work for other Milestone – a timeless approach to soul jazz that's crafted with an ease and grace that few other players can match. Mabern's accompaniment is right on the money, and rhythm from the team of drummer Joe Farnsworth and bassist John Webber is never too cluttered, nor too laidback. As usual, Alexander's got a hell of an ear for a tune – and has come up with some great gems for the set, including Herbie Hancock's "Sonorisa", Mabern's classic "A Few Miles From Memphis", and Pat Martino's "Dead Center". Other tracks include "One For Steve", "It's Magic", and "Search For Peace". CD

An excellent John Handy album from the 60s – and one that features some especially nice vibes from Bobby Hutcherson – in a group that also features Pat Martino on guitar! Tracks are all nice and long, and the record maybe features some of the most "out" moments in Handy's career – as he blows very soulful solos on alto, while Hutcherson hits some very hard noisy notes on the vibes. The rest of the group includes Albert Stinson on bass and Doug Sides on drums – and titles include "Naima", "A Little Quiet", and "Tears Of Ole Miss (Anatomy Of A Riot)". LP, Vinyl record album

A stone cooker from organist Don Patterson – and one of his best fuller group recordings for Prestige from the 60s! Patterson is best known for his work on the label with his trio that included guitarist Pat Martino and drummer Billy James – and while that unit is intact here, they're also augmented by Howard McGhee on trumpet and Charles McPherson on alto – for a rich, full sound that adds a bit of hardbop into Patterson's normally soul jazz focus. The tracks are all nice and long, and filled with a deeper set of colors and tunes than usual for Don. Titles include "Pisces Soul", "Island Fantasy", and "Donna Lee". CD

✨✧ Lonnie SmithSpiral ... CD
Palmetto, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Burning work from Lonnie Smith – one of the few players from the 60s Hammond generation who can still grab our ears as strongly as ever! Over the past few decades, Smith's developed a sound that's even freer than before – but still equally groovy – a gliding, open approach to organ jazz that's almost brought in some pages from the Larry Young book, but still comes off with all the swing and soul that Lonnie brought to his best early sides on Blue Note! This session's a brilliant trio date – just Smith's Hammond, the guitar of Jonathan Kreisberg, and drums of Jamire Williams – a wonderful combo who soar beautifully together – hitting modes that remind us of Larry Young/Grant Green collaborations at some points, and Don Patterson/Pat Martino grooves at others. Smith's got a great ear for bottom tones here – and even at quieter points, manages to get our speakers bumping on the shelves – a true testament to the richness of sound you'll hear on cuts that include "Sweet & Lovely", "Spiral", "Beehive", "Sukiyaki", "Frame For The Blues", and "Mellow Mood". A fantastic session by Jimmy Heath – cut right at the time of his best 70s soul jazz work! This obscure set was recorded in New York in 1974, but not issued in this form until the mid 90s – and it features Heath with a stellar group that includes Curtis Fuller, Stanley Cowell, Mtume, Billy Higgins, and Pat Martino. The overall sound is modal soul jazz – in the style of the best work on Strata East, with a far-reaching spiritual approach that never goes too far outside, but which is ready to explore the farther aspects of jazz-based expression. Heath is incredible – leading the group on alto and soprano, blowing post-Coltrane lines that are supported by fantastic rhythm work by Cowell, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins. Prestige, 1965/1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent early work by tenorist Eric Kloss – caught here at the start of his career, when he was a heck of a soul jazz talent! The CD brings together Kloss' first 2 jazz outings – Introducing Eric Kloss and Love & All That Jazz – recorded back when he was a teenage virtuoso attending the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children! Introducing Eric Kloss features Kloss with Don Patterson's trio, with Pat Martino on guitar, and is a record that's very (and surprisingly) groovy all the way through. The tracks are mostly standards, but Kloss plays with a lot of imagination and fire, and really wails along with Patterson's organ. Love And All That Jazz has a sweet little organ jazz feel, courtesy of Groove Holmes and Don Patterson. Kloss was totally tight at this point, and less given to the sort of sloppy experimentation that weakened him later. He's backed by two different organ jazz combos, and the feel is nice and loungey, but with a good modern edge. Tracks include "Gemini", "Just for Fun-k", and a great version of "Love for Sale". CD

There's a fierce, freewheeling vibe to the cuts – not funk, but more classic organ jazz – supported throughout with equally strong work on guitar from Steve Fell. If we had to come up with a reference for the vibe, we might go back to the 60s trio work of Don Patterson with Pat Martino and Billy James – and that's a heck of a compliment from us! Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer guitar and Hammond session with a really sublime sort of sound – a groove that's wonderfully free of cliche – and which has an open, spacious quality that few artists can match! Given the instrumentation, the album's steeped in tradition, but never tries to just rehash an older Prestige Records vibe – and instead guitarist Ed Cherry and organist Kyle Koehler find a way of soaring out in their own spirits – opening up strongly in a bass-less trio that only features the drums of Anwar Marshall to keep things snapping along. The pairing is perfect – on the level of Grant Green with Larry Young, or Pat Martino with Don Patterson – yet very much with its own spirit, too. Cherry's arrangements are great, too – providing very fresh takes on familiar tunes, alongside his own compositions. Classic work by 60s tenor giant Willis Jackson – a fantastic live session done in 1964 in New York, one that was originally spread out over the course of 2 LPs – Soul Night Live and Tell It. The material is finally brought together as one release here, a monstrously great set of 14 tracks that feature Jackson's gutsy tenor hard-grooving with a combo that includes Frank Robinson on trumpet, Pat Martino on guitar, and Carl Wilson on organ. The team of Martino and Wilson is especially great – choppy, groovy, and very soulful – with a sound that's similar to the organ work on classic albums by Jack McDuff from the same time. Titles include "Thunderbird", "All Soul", "Ebb Tide", "Up A Lazy River", "The Man I Love", and "One Mint Julep". CD
