new Barclay James Harvest — Taking Some Time On – The Parlophone-Harvest Years 1968 to 1973 (5CD set) ... CD
EMI (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 5 CDs .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
All the early albums from Barclay James Harvest, plus a huge amount of tracks from singles and radio performances here – all adding up to an incredibly rich document of this seminal British group! Barclay maybe never had the huge crossover success as some of their contemporaries, but their sound here is brilliant throughout – a mode that goes way past mainstream prog and psych, with some tremendous instrumentation that really packs a hell of a lot of punch – never going too far out, or getting too overindulgent – yet really fusing so much into a tight little package. The set features the full albums Their First Album, Once Again, And Other Short Stories, and Barclay James Harvest – plus BBC Top Gear tracks, an early single, Bob Harris sessions, and more – a whopping 69 titles in all!

Beatles — Beatles For Sale ... LP
Parlophone (UK), 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $38.99
The Beatles for sale, but never in a commercial way at all – early proof of the group's great balance between mainstream appeal and sounds that still stick to the frontiers of rock and roll! The tunes are short, and heavy on influences from American R&B – yet the Fab Four are already crafting their new sound strongly, and have a melodic brilliance that's hard to deny! Titles include "Eight Days A Week", "Words Of Love", "Honey Don't", "Every Little Thing", "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party", "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby", "I'm A Loser", "Rock & Roll Music", "I'll Follow The Sun", "Mr Moonlight", and "No Reply".
(Nice UK pressing – gatefold, with "Kansas City" on cover. Silver/black label with EMI logo. Cover has light wear on top, but is nice.)
Also available: Beatles For Sale (180 gram vinyl) ... LP $20.99

Beatles — Help (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Parlophone/Apple, 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $20.99 22.98
A great little record that's kind of a prequel for Rubber Soul – filled with short, tuneful tracks that would flower more deeply on that later album – and often served up with a bit more wit and adult consciousness than in any of the group's earlier records! One of those records that we always forget about, until we drop the needle – the revel in its sweet blend of Beatles modes on tracks that include "Help", "The Night Before", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", "I've Just Seen A Face", "Yesterday", "Act Naturally", "It's Only Love", "Ticket To Ride", and "I Need You". Original 14 track UK lineup – much different than the American release!

An iconic early cover image from The Beatles – with iconic early music to match! Dave Davani — Fused! – Swinging Soul Sound Of Dave Davani ... CD
Parlophone/Big Beat (UK), 1965. New Copy .... $11.99
Mod mod 60s jazz – and 20 tight-as-can-be instrumentals from London's Dave Davani combo! Dave's a Hammond player with a great mix of soul jazz and R&B in his grooves – very much the best sort of instrumental work you might expect from London in the swinging 60s – a great blend of American influences and UK mod styles. The rest of the group includes guitar, bass, and drums – plus a bit of vocals and Latin percussion from Beryl Wayne. The groove here is clearly a precursor to the James Taylor Quartet, and the overall sound is better than some of the more famous groups from the time – such as the combos of Brian Auger or Graham Bond. The set features tracks from Dave's Parlophone album, a few other singles, and even 4 previously unissued tracks from the same time – with titles that inlcude "Big Bossa Man", "Working Out", "Funky Mama", "Sack O Woe", "Boot Leg", "Harlem Waltz", and "Pig Foots".

new Record Collector — Issue 411 – February 2013 ... Magazine
Record Collector, 2013. New Copy .... $10.49 Out Of Stock
The younger Beatles are on the cover if this issue – for a feature that takes a look at the R&B inspirations for the Fab Four – which includes a chart of all the R&B tunes they covered for Parlophone in the early days, plus the names of record shops where they surely would have heard those records in the first place, and interviews with their early 60s friends and peers! This issue also has a feature on electronic pioneers Silver Apples, a guide to female pop and rock memorabilia, the 10th in their hip hop collector's guide series and much, much more – including the essential marketplace listings – possibly the best roundup in print!
