new Ruth Copeland featuring ParliamentSelf Portrait/I Am What I Am (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1970/1971. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99
A killer 2CD set – both of the Ruth Copeland albums for Invictus – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Self Portrait – a surprisingly groovy little set, and one of a few outings cut by singer Ruth Copeland – kind of an enigmatic figure in the early P-Funk years! The approach here is more rock than soul, but there's definitely some funky undercurrents too – of the sort that have always made Copeland a favorite with break freaks over the years – thanks to help on the album from Dennis Coffey, Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, and George Clinton! Ruth arranged, performed, and produced the core part of the album herself – but the production style is surprisingly strong – with a use of space and strings that almost shows a bit of Axelrod influence at times, although more skewed towards the Detroit soul scene that Copeland called home. Titles include the classic "Your Love Been So Good To Me", which starts with a very fuzzy electric break, and "I Got a Thing For You Daddy", which has some great spacey guitars on the intro – plus "Child of the North", "No Commitment", "A Gift of Me", and "The Music Box". I Am What I Am is a second sublime set from Ruth Copeland! There's a bit more emphasis on soul here than the funk of Copeland's previous efforts – but in a way that makes for an even more impressive record overall, especially when you realize that Ruth arranged and produced the whole thing. George Clinton and Eddie Hazel both had a hand in co-writing songs with Copeland – and instrumentation features Hazel on guitar, plus Bernie Worrell on piano – so there's still a key P-Funk link. Titles include the breakbeat track "Suburban Family Lament", the fuzzy stoner funk number "Don't You Wish You Had", and covers of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and "Play With Fire" – plus "Crying Has Made Me Stronger", "Hare Krishna", and "The Medal". Bonus tracks include single versions of "Hare Krishna", "Gimme Shelter", "The Music Box", "A Gift Of Me", and "No Commitment".

ParliamentChocolate City (Remastered & Expanded) ... CD
Casablanca/Mercury, 1975. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98
An amazing album that's probably one of the most unified albums that George Clinton ever recorded! The band's rawer style has been firmed up and economized – but a lot of the best elements are still in place, including a strange approach to vocals that has male and female voices interacting and counterbalancing in a similar style to that heard on some of Roy Ayers' best work from the early 70s. Clinton's begun introducing a lot of elements of Funkadelic into the group – but the tracks are still short and very tight, with a focussed approach to both funk and lyrics that really makes the album stand up to repeated listenings over the years. The album begins with the sublime "Chocolate City", a surprisingly political number that has these incredible jagged piano lines that echo away madly – then it rolls into other great numbers like "Side Effects", "What Comes Funky", "If It Don't Fit, Don't Force It", and "I Misjudged You". CD includes 3 bonus tracks – "If It Don't Fit Don't Force It (alternate)", "I Misjudged You (alternate)", and "Common Law Wife (previously unreleased)".

ParliamentClones Of Dr Funkenstein ... CD
Casablanca, 1976. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98
An oft-overlooked gem from Parliament – released during the year 1976, and sometimes hidden between monster LPs like Funkentelechy and Mothership Connection – but every bit as great as those two classics! The album's got that tightened-up P-Funk sound that was working so perfectly at the time – still with all the fuzzy haired elements of earlier years, but presented with a bit more focus – and a powerhouse swing that really drives the tracks home with a funky groove on the bottom! There's a flowing sort of energy here that almost makes you think that the whole thing just emerged naturally from the brain of George Clinton – but all ensemble players have a strong hand in the action, and really get some great moments in on the set. Cuts include "Gamin' On Ya", "Do That Stuff", "Children Of Production", and "I've Been Watching You (Move Your Sexy Body)".

new ParliamentGloryhallastoopid – Or Pin The Tale On The Funky ... LP
Casablanca, 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An overlooked later gem from Parliament – a set that's very tight and funky, and which really picks up the groove first laid down on "Flashlight"! There's a tightly snapping approach here that rivals the best late 70s work by Funkadelic – the later P-Funk mode that's even more focused on rhythms than before, and which gets away from the sloppy stuff to really hit home with the groove! Tunes are steeped in horny horns, wah wah guitar, and lots of electric keyboards – and titles include "The Big Bang Theory", which is virtually a blueprint for the LA G-funk sound of the 80s – plus the tracks "The Freeze", "May We Bang You?", "Party People", and "(GloryHallaStoopid) Pin The Tail On The Funky".

ParliamentOsmium (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Invictus/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $26.99
An insane bit of fuzzed-out funk! This is Parliament's rare first album – a trippy batch of tunes that come off of Clinton's experimentation in the Detroit soul scene, infused by the rock-heavy energy of the city at the time – and probably a heck of a lot of cannabis, too! The record is quite different than the slick funky sound of the group's later work for Casablanca – and has the psychedelic funk sound of the early work of Funkadelic, which was also recorded during the same period. The album's filled with funky classics – including "I Call My Baby Pussycat", "Little Ole Country Boy", "My Automobile", "Funky Woman", and "Nothing Before Me But Thang". CD features loads of bonus tracks too – 7 more numbers that include "Red Hot Mama", "Come In Out Of The Rain", "Unfinished Instrumental", "Loose Booty", "Breakdown (mono)", "Fantasy Is Reality", and "Breakdown (stereo unedited version)".

new ParliamentUp For The Down Stroke ... LP
Casablanca, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The first album that Parliament cut after their trippy fuzzed-out headblast Osmium. The record features a much more stripped down sound – nice and funky, with a blueprint of the bass-driven groove that would dominate the P-Funk sound of the 70s. Bootsy's on bass, and the group features Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, and other likely suspects. Includes the monster jammer "Up For The Down Stroke", plus other goodies like "The Goose", "Testify", "Presence Of A Brain", and "All Your Goodies Are Gone".

Casablanca, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
Ahhhhh . . . By this point, George Clinton and the P-Funk team were on top of the world! The record is a masterful dose of slick mothership jamming – perfectly woven together with that tightly compressed style that really served Clinton's production work well. The tracks are long, but never too loopy – and thanks to help from the Bernie Worrell, Jerome Brailey, Gary Shider, and the Horny Horns, the album stays very tight instrumentally all the way through! Loads of Parliament classics, including "Bop Gun", "Funkentelechy", "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk", and the massive "Flash Light", which we've heard a million times, but which never ceases to amaze us!

Great late funky material from Parliament oof the Trombonipulation album! Although the date of the single is quite old, "Agony Of Defeat" is an excellent funky track, with a strident soulful groove – and a sound that's very similar to Funkadelic's "Not Just Knee Deep", always a plus in our book!
(In a Casablanca sleeve. Labels have some marker.)

The Mothership goes under water – as George Clinton and crew groove away nicely on this water-themed set of tracks designed to raise Atlantis from the deep! The overall sound is perhaps not as totally perfect as some of the earlier albums, but the P-Funk machine is still in full effect – cranking away nice and hard on tracks like "Liquid Sunshine", "Motor Booty Affair", "Deep", "Rumpofsteelskin", and "(Your'e A Fish And I'm A) Water Sign". Plus, the album more than makes up for a lack of standout tracks with a nicely-united theme – almost a "concept album" of the funky type!

new ParliamentParliament Live – P Funk Earth Tour ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although these days, Parliament's best remembered for their classic studio albums, back in the 70s, the real P-Funk experience was the incredible live shows served up by George Clinton and the group! George, Bootsy, and the rest were undeniably at the top of their game at the time – rolling into cities and taking them by storm with their space-themed sets, wild costumes, and intense ability to jam live with a force that even blew away their records! This double live set is a great document of the P-Funk sound of the time – and features some great tunes from mid 70s Parliament, served up in modes that range from straight to very long and drawn out. Titles include "Give Up The Funk", "Get Off Your Ass & Jam", "Night Of The Thumpasorous Peoples", "Let's Take It To The Stage", and "Gamin' On Ya!" – all done with the sort of live jamming feel that made their shows go on forever and groove all night long.

Bootsy's Rubber Band — Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Warner, 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
Massive work from Bootsy Collins – one of his best-ever solo albums, and a perfect summation of the P-Funk groove – focused strongly through Bootsy's own sense of stardom! George Clinton worked with Collins on production, and the album's as tight as the best Parliament or Funkadelic work of the time – particularly the latter on their killer 70s sides for Warner, which was also the home for Bootsy. The Horny Horns are helping out on this one, which gives the album a strong instrumental drive – but the real star is Bootsy, whose sexy vocals and good sense of soul keep things firmly on track throughout. Features the cuts "What's A Telephone Bill?", "Munchies For Your Love", "We Want Bootsy", "The Pinocchio Theory", and "Rubber Duckie".

Brides Of Funkenstein — Funk Or Walk ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1978. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A funky female duo from the P-Funk empire – one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! Tracks are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie".

new George Clinton — Some Of My Best Jokes Are Friends ... LP
Capitol, 1985. Sealed .... $8.99
While little of Clinton's work under his own name in the 80s compares favorably with the best of the Parliament-Funkadelic years, it's still fairly solid compared to a lot of the other commercial R&B dreck that was being peddled at the time. With the sort of fat bass, loads of synthesized keyboards and brittle drum machine sounds that were stock in trade during that era, but an undeniable groove running throughout most of the tunes, like "Double Oh Oh", "Bulletproof", "Bodyguard" and "Some Of My Best Jokes Are Friends".

Strut, 2011. New Copy .... $5.99
Dennis Coffey and Mayer Hawthorne – a pairing we never could have imagined years back, but who come together here beautifully on a cover of the old Parliament number! "All Your Goodies Are Gone" sounds even more soulful here than on the original – and Coffey's guitar is nice and sharp, yet nicely bows to the background a bit to let Hawthorne push his vocals! Speaking of vocals, Kings Go Forth make a great appearance on the flipside – making us wonder when they'll be serving us up a new album!

Eramus Hall — Your Love Is My Desire ... CD
Westbound (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $12.99
One of the last great soul albums on the Westbound label! Eramus Hall have a vague P-Funk connection – and according to legend, the band were given their name by George Clinton, who had seen a building in Chicago named Eramus Hall – but the sound is a lot smoother than any of the P-Funk projects of the time, and the group's strongest point is their smooth soul groove, augmented by a tight jazz funk style on the best cuts. In a way, they're sort of like a morphed version of late Parliament – with a funk sound that's nicely compressed, but still a lot more true than any of the countless other bands on the market who were aping P-Funk at the time. Highlights include the groovers "Your Love Is My Desire" and "She Shined A Light", both with nice sample moments – and other tracks include "Stuck In The Mudd", "Funk Permit", and "Think Positively".

Warner, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $16.99
An instant classic the day it was released – and a perfect blending of the group's older freaked-out style with a slick late 70s funk sound that started showing up in the work of many other groups. "One Nation Under A Groove" is a monster cut with a hook that won't quit, and the LP version runs way over 7 minutes long. Other tracks are equally great, and the whole thing's woven together with the same sort of skill as some of the best Parliament albums from the mid 70s. Tracks include "Into You", "Grooveallegiance", and "Cholly".

Tight funky soul from Quazar! This relatively overlooked group is one of the lesse-remembered P-Funk-linked acts of the late 70s – which is a shame, as it's a great little side project from the team of Glenn Goins and Jerome Brailey – and one with a bass and drums-heavy party groove! The style here is almost even tighter than that of Parliament or Funkadelic at the time – with tunes that are shorter and more focused, and which almost seem to point the way towards the changes that mainstream funk would take later into the 80s. Strides — Reclamation ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2011. New Copy .... $7.99
A pretty sweet, reggae-steeped full length from Sydney 10-piece The Strides – who bring a real love Jamaican music into the pot, but it's a quite a diverse brew! The Strides glide along here with some jazzy funk, Afrobeat rhythms, some subtle modern flourishes and other boundless bits of inspiration – and they blend it all really well. Guests include Ras Roni, Ltl Gzeus and the tracks include "Storm Clouds" feat Ras Roni, Some O'Dem" feat Ltl Gzeus, "FKD (Farewell King Deuce-A-Mo)", "Umbi Gumbi", "Escape", "Reclamation" feat Ltl Gzeus, "Well Hung Parliament" and more. George Clinton — Computer Games (30th anniversary edition) ... CD
1982. New Copy .... Around June 25, 2013
Great post-Parliafunkadelicment work from George Clinton – surely the biggest hit of his albums for Capitol – especially since it features the singles "Atomic Dog" and "Loopzilla"! We'll be honest in saying that at the time this one came out, as die-hard Detroit funk fans, we remember thinking "oh gosh, George has lost it" – but from the perspective of many years later, the record sure sounds like classic P-Funk to us – really picking up where the last few Funkadelic and Parliament albums left off! The album sports a great Pedro Bell cover, features some nice work with Bootsy, includes the hits "Atomic Dog" and "Loopzilla" – and also features some lesser-known gems that include "Pot Sharing Tots", "Get Dressed", "Computer Games", and "One Fun At A Time".

new Bootsy's Rubber Band — Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! ... LP
Warner, 1977. Used Gatefold .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
(Cover has light wear.)
Also available: Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! (180 gram pressing) ... LP $9.99

new Funkadelic — Uncle Jam Wants You ... LP
Warner, 1979. Used Gatefold .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Funkadelic albums ever – a tightly grooving classic that never lets up at all! There's a sense of perfection to everything here – one that really gets the group past their tripped-out early years, and firmly into the sublime territory George Clinton hit with Parliament – an amazing sound that's wrapped up perfectly on every single track – grooves that definitely raised the bar for a huge amount of mainstream funk acts who were popping up at the time. Production is never too slick, and there's still lots of tasty guitar licks wrapped up in the mix – and titles include the classics "Freak Of The Week" and "Not Just Knee Deep" – plus "Field Maneuvers", "Holly Wants To Go To California", and "Foot Soldiers".
(Cover has some wear, with a sticker in one corner.)

new Outkast — Speakerboxxx/The Love Below ... CD
LaFace, 2003. Used 2CD .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pick any 10 words out of any Outkast album description on our pages at random, and you'll see how dearly we've loved these boys throughout the years – but truth be told, deep down we didn't think that they would be able to pull off the double album/solo album project(s). We were seriously wrong – Speakerboxxx/Love Below is HUGE in every way, and both halves are great all the way through! If you were worried Big Boi's Speakerboxxx half would be lazy southern hip hop without Andre's freaky presence throughout, you can put those fears to rest right now. Speakerboxxx is a deeply soulful electro hopping pounder from front to back – every bit as innovative as Andre's half! Tracks include "Ghettomusick" (which features one of just two appearances by A3000 on the whole disc), "Bowtie" with Sleepy Brown, "Bust" with Killer Mike, "Church", "Tomb Of The Boom" with Konkrete, Big Gipp and Ludacris, "Flip Flop" with Jay-Z, "The Way You Move" and more. A lot of press has been given to the assumption that Andre 3000 has largely forsaken hip hop on his half (The Love Below) and has instead dived head first into cosmic future funk. Well, the rumors are true. There's lots of straight up jazz piano and horn bits on the Love Below, with Andre's half serious, half tongue-in-cheek romantic soul cabaret croon way over the top. It's steeped in the classic Outkast party vibe, but with lots of Sign Of The Times-era Prince (complete with androgynous distorted vocals), Parliament and Cameo thrown into the mix. Sick, energetic genius! Tracks include the deliriously great "Hey Ya!" single, "She Lives In My Lap", "Love Hater", "Happy Valentine's Day", "Roses", "Good Day, Good Sir", "Behold A Lady", "Pink And Blue", "Spread", "Dracula's Lady" with Kelis, and more. Who the hell knows what they can possibly do to surprise us after this – but wherever Andre 3000 and Big Boi go from here, they each have yet another classic in the discography!
(CD case has a cutout hole.)

new Various — Change Is Gonna Come – The Voice Of Black America 1963 to 1973 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant testament to the righteous power of soul music in the civil rights era – and key proof that even a subtle message could do a lot back in the day! The package presents the work in roughly chronological order – starting from a time when politics had to be peddled softly, and moving towards a time when things could be a bit more explicit – showing a great evolution of themes of pride and power, offered up in tunes both familiar and obscure. The collection is way more than a "hip hits of the 60s" sort of set – and acts almost as a mini-documentary of the contributions of soul music to civil rights – supported by a great set of notes and photos in the booklet. We're especially happy to see the track "Have You Ever Seen The Blues" by Yaphet Kotto – alongside 22 more titles that include "Blues For Mr Charlie" by Lou Gosset & Joe Lee Wilson, "The Ghetto" by Homer Banks, "We're A Winner" by The Impressions, "When Will We Be Paid" by The Staple Singers, "Oh Lord Why Lord" by Parliament, "Message From A Black Man" by The Spinners, "Run Charlie Run" by The Temptations, "Cryin In The Streets (parts 1 & 2)" by George Perkins & The Silver Stars, "Free At Last" by Jackie Day, "Someday We'll All Be Free" by Donny Hathaway, and "The Prayer" by Ray Scott.

new Politicians — Politicians Featuring McKinley Jackson (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hot Wax/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy .... $26.99 Out Of Stock
Incredibly messed-up funk – a 70s instrumental classic that's delighted our ears for years! The set's got a cosmic sound that mixes together conventional guitar-based funky with some weird electronic touches at times – going for a fuzzed-out moogy quality that really deepens the groove – and which goes even further on those tunes that push the basslines all the way into the red! The group's headed by McKinley Jackson, and features some ex-members of Parliament – all coming together in a full, rich sound that almost has traces of soundtrack sophistication at times – yet which manages to come across with the burning energy of a funky 45! The album includes the classics "Funky Toes" and "Psycha-Soula-Funkadelic" – plus the group's legendary take on "Free Your Mind", a sample classic from years back! Great stuff if you dig a fuzzy Westbound sort of funk groove – and other tracks include "Church", "The World We Live In", "Everything Good Is Bad", "Speak On It", and "Politician's Theme". Features bonus tracks "Love Machine (parts 1 & 2)".

new Various — Getting To Me – 25 Tracks From The Classy Atlantic End Of The Rare 60s Soul Spectrum ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent rare soul from Atlantic – and a very different side of the label's output! The focus here is on tracks that are a bit more sophisticated than the hits – not really mellow, as most of the numbers are very nice groovers, but just with a twist that sets them apart from some of the label's other material. The 25-track set begins with a previously unissued gem from Ben E King – "Getting To Me", which has some of the most amazing arrangements we've heard on his records! Other titles include "Sly Girl" by Derek Martin, "My Love Is Getting Stronger" by Cliff Nobles, "Here Come The Tears" by Darrell Banks, "You My Love" by Tami Lynn, "Across The Street" by Lenny O'Henry, "Come On Baby & Hurt Me" by Naomi & Harris, "New Day Begins" by Parliaments, "Find Me Somebody" by Bobby Womack, "Got To Get You Back" by Johnny Newbag, "Suffering City" by Johnny Copeland, "Where Did I Go Wrong" by The Embers, and "Thank You John" by Willie Tee.
